Top Gun Workouts - Maverick
(because two people encouraged me)
disclaimer: i’m not qualified in any sport or exercise science so please don’t take this for gospel. consult with a professional etc etc.
In this series I’ll be breaking down the muscular make up of characters and what exercises i think they’d do, if that’s something that may trigger you please give this a miss and enjoy my other general shitposting!
Okay let’s look at 1986 Maverick, keeping in mind him/tom cruise is about 23/24
These are some of the best side profile shots in the movie. In the second one he’s flexing (accidentally or on purpose) which really shows of the tricep definition. Maverick’s actually really interesting in his composition because he has really lean and defined abs but isn’t as lean as Ice or Slider. He has a slightly stockier appearance and perhaps trains for strength rather than hypertrophy. Anyway; There’s definitely a focus on arms here, although in TGM Tom’s arms are even bigger.
He’s a bit hunched over here but there is back definition too and again, tricep and delt’s are pretty well defined.
The beach scene shows off a lot of Mav’s torso and you see from many angles how strong his obliques are. Strong obliques can given the illusion of a wider rib cage and make your hips appear narrower. He hasn’t got the abs of Slider but he’s got a core of steel. You can see under his left arm in both photos there is some lateral definition. He doesn’t have a huge chest but his traps make up for it.
Overall it’s hard to tell with his legs, there’s not a lot to go off.
Exercises
Upper body focus. Tricep focused exercises such as dips and skull crushers.
Biceps are a little bit lacking so probably not a huge focus there but defiently bicep curls. He’s got a “curls get girls” mentality
Seated rows, lateral pull downs and chin ups to target the back
Probably dead lifts and/or squats but not a super heavy amount. Despite not having a lot of muscle mass on his legs, Mav isn’t disproportionate. I think his cardio comes from running and that’s where he gets the toned legs from.
Ultimately I think Mav has a bit of a sleeper build. If he has a ‘pump’ or flexes you see his muscles really easily but in his day to day life he looks toned but nothing crazy. Classic sleeper build. I think he likes to work out for aesthetics but flying is his everything, so functional fitness to be in peak position. Explosive movements, core strengthening and lots of cardiovascular exercises to help against g-forces

Old Bad Movies I Enjoyed Recently (And So Can You!)
TUFF TURF (1985) I am torn about Tuff Turf, because this short movie is confused in tone, bouncing between badly written romance, teen shenanigans like crashing the buffet tables of country clubs, rad rock concerts, and...oh... intimate partner violence and attempted murder. James Spader is a bicycle vigilante rocker who gets on the bad side of his new school's local bully/gang leader. Things do not improve when Spader also decides that he simply must charm said gang leader's girlfriend. What tension!
Honestly, the only reason this movie sticks with me is the presence of a young Robert Downey Jr, who is, I apologize to say, fucking hot. He plays the drums at a rock concert shirtless using handcuffs as belts for his leather pants. Look it up. Rather than the main romance, the more interesting chemistry is the friendship of RDJ's and Spader's characters (insert Ultron fanfic joke here), which borders on the intensely homoerotic. Really, Tuff Turf makes me yearn for a more interesting film that would have removed the "fighting over a girl" element of the story and just had RDJ and Spader as rad rocker/vigilante boyfriends partners.
IRON EAGLE (1986) This movie about fighter jets actually predates Top Gun by a few months - only instead of Tom Cruise and very heterosexual volleyball matches it's about a group of military brats living on a US Military base. The main character's dad is a pilot who was shot down over a non-specific (but definitely evil) Middle Eastern country, but since the mean adults don't want to do anything, it's up to the kids to steal an F-16 fighter jet and rescue him! This film is only the Purest 80s Reagan Americana where you get to see classic Teen Movie shenanigans evolve into "and then the main character committed war crimes."
A ridiculous, awful film. Did this movie change my life? Possibly.
AMERICA 3000 (1986) A strange, weird, absurd film set in the post apocalypse, where nuclear war has set humans back to the stone age and Amazon women rule over (mostly) intellectually inferior men. My friends and I couldn't decide whether the slang they invented and used copiously in this film was annoying or not. Hilariously, it being in the 80s, the dumbest thing about this whole film is that despite the tyrannical Amazons hating men and only reluctantly using them for breeding, this film also stubbornly refuses to acknowledge even a hint of the existence of homosexuality. Which is probably a blessing, to be honest.
I found it tolerably bizarre enough to watch. Once. Your results may vary.
HACKERS (1995) We now jump into the 90s, and have you heard of these new-fangled things called computers? Standing out as one of Angelie Jolie's earliest movies and a real breakout role for her (it's also where she meets her future ex-husband, Johnny Lee Miller - who most people on this site will recognize as Sherlock Holmes in Elementary). The movie is essentially about a group of high-school hackers with ridiculous handles who run afoul of a corporate conspiracy, are framed, and must dodge the Secret Service while trying to clear their names. But the plot doesn't really matter all that much. What makes this movie shine is the dialogue, the characters, the costumes, and the✨ vibes ✨. This movie is a cult classic for a reason, and the queer coding of all the hackers is undeniable to a modern audience.
It's not a good movie, but its imperfections are what make it so strange, hilarious, and unique. I felt the oddest sense of nostalgia watching this movie, despite the fact that the bizarre pseudo-futuristic world it depicts never actually existed. It made such an impression that I instantly acquired a physical copy of Hackers after my first viewing of it. Hack the Planet!
Space Truckers (1996) To round us off we have Dennis Hopper starring in this film with surprisingly good production values (for the time) failing utterly at everything it attempts to do. Ostensibly about down-to-earth (ha) blue collar space truckers just trying to make an honest living hauling goods across a solar system being increasingly corporatized and hostile to independent workers.
Throw in an evil corporation, space pirates, and a plot to overthrow earth's government with night-unstoppable killer robots, and you have all the elements for what could be a decent movie, but none of them really mesh and are soured by some pretty uncomfortable "romance" elements that have not aged well.
It's a movie that fails in so many ways, but it is at least interesting in its attempt. The people who made Space Truckers took a risk, and in this age of constant sequels and reboots even a failure like this feels...refreshing.

An Australian police officer pointed his gun at a colleague who threatened to give away the plot of a Hollywood blockbuster, a court heard this week.
Constable Dominic Francis Gaynor, 30, was working behind the counter at a police station in Sydney in May when a colleague said he had seen "Top Gun: Maverick," the Tom Cruise movie released in 2022.
The junior colleague, Probationary Constable Morgan Royston, who made the legal complaint, told Gaynor he had just seen the movie and added: "I’ll spoil it for you."
According to court documents cited by Australian broadcaster ABC, Gaynor laughed and said, "Don’t spoil the movie" and "I’ll shoot you," before taking his Glock handgun out of its holster and pointing it towards Royston for five seconds.
The document says Gaynor was laughing throughout and that his finger was not on the trigger but on the receiver.
New South Wales Police told NBC News in an emailed statement Friday morning that ABC's account is accurate, but declined to comment further.
Gaynor pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm with disregard for the complainant's safety, ABC reported.
Royston appeared at a hearing at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, where he described suffering from depression and anxiety as a result of the incident and said he had since left the force, according to ABC.
Chris Micali, Gaynor’s counsel, told the court his client had not intended to intimidate Royston but admitted he had made an error. Micali added the conviction would definitely to Gaynor losing his job.
Gaynor was given a two-year good behavior order and told to carry out 100 hours of community service.
Magistrate Michael Maher said in his sentencing remarks, according to the Australian Associated Press, that the defendant had shown "clearly dangerous reckless judgment."
The judge added that while he accepted Gaynor had accepted responsibility, he doubted the true extent of his remorse.
"I am somewhat guarded as to his understanding of the true impact that he’s had to his colleague," he said, according to the AAP.
"Top Gun: Maverick," a reboot of the 1986 classic "Top Gun" movie following the exploits of an elite squadron of Navy pilots, was the highest-grossing movie of 2022, making $719 million in ticket sales while winning praise from critics.

Top Gun Day
Host a watch party, with costumes and topical games, or simply gather your friends to watch the 1986 Tom Cruse classic Top Gun and its sequels.
In 1986, smack dab in the middle of the bodacious decade of neon, headbangers and The Brat Pack, the movie Top Gun roared into theaters like an F-14 Tomcat. It got a missile lock on the box office and shot down just over $356 million, making it what would eventually be the 11th highest grossing movie of Tom Cruise’s career. The movie centers on Maverick, a hot shot pilot, who is sent to the US Navy Fighter Weapons school, and all of the drama, pride and testosterone that scenario entails.
History of Top Gun Day
The actual Navy Fighter Weapons School was formed in 1969, during the time of the Viet Nam War, by the Chief of Naval Operations Admiral, Thomas Hinman Moorer, at the recommendation of Captain Frank Ault. The realization came that the Navy’s fighter pilots needed more training.
During Operation Rolling Thunder, the United States lost nearly 1,000 aircraft over North Vietnamese skies. The USAF and Navy both sought the causes, but came to two different conclusions. The Air Force believed that the fault was mechanical: that MiG pilots caught American pilots in a rear blind spot. The Navy decided that the failure was in training. The Air Force responded by developing new technology, while the Navy started the Top Gun school, eventually paving the way for 110 minutes of heart pounding action, backed by a roaring theme song.
Top Gun Day Timeline
1969 Top Gun school admits its first class
The Navy Fighter Weapons School is opened for extra combat training at the height of the Viet Nam war.
1981 Tom Cruise debuts on the big screen
Playing a minor role in the film, Endless Love, Tom Cruise was beat out for the starring role (opposite Brooke Shields) by Martin Hewitt, an actor who would end up doing mostly random TV appearances afterward.
1986 Top Gun is released
Quickly earning a deep love from audiences, Top Gun becomes the highest grossing film of the year.
1987 US Navy uses the film for recruiting
In a “Join the Navy” commercial, songs from the movie are used along with shots that look like that came straight from Top Gun footage.
2022 Top Gun 2
After waiting more than 30 years, the world finally gets to see Tom Cruise in action again as “Maverick”.
How to Celebrate Top Gun Day
Top Gun Day celebrates the movie, but at its core is all about attitude. It teaches about the importance of teamwork…and shirtless volleyball. So how do you take the highway to the danger zone?
Get started with some of these ideas:
Reenact the best Top Gun Movie Scenes
A good way to begin might be by reliving the adventures of Goose, Maverick and the Iceman. Go to a karaoke bar and sing “She’s Lost that Loving Feeling” and “Take My Breath Away.” Why not try to play a little volleyball with a group? Shirtlessness is optional, of course. Download some Kenny Loggins and blast “Danger Zone” out of those car windows as loud as is possible.
But maybe karaoke isn’t the thing and the weather isn’t good enough for sports. It is still possible to find other ways to enjoy the day!
Host a Top Gun Day Party
Get friends and family together for a cool party in honor of Top Gun Day. Invite people to dress up like their favorite characters. Entertain by playing Top Gun trivia games before settling in to watch the movie.
During the movie, don’t forget to grab a pair of dark aviator glasses and an old leather jacket. For an added challenge, try to find a pair of overalls to convert into a flight suit! It might even be fun to make it into a double feature with some other jet-fighter movies of the era, like the lesser known Iron Eagle, which actually came out a few months before Top Gun.
Snacks served at the party could include a variety of airplane and naval themed treats, such as patriotic m&ms in red, white and blue, cookies in the shapes of stars, airplanes or clouds, and even aviator glasses. Decorations can, of course, feature anything red, white and blue, stars & stripes, naval, airplanes, American flags or even quotes from the Top Gun movie.
Listen to the Top Gun Soundtrack
Of course, the music played at the Top Gun Day party is key. After all, the movie won more awards for its soundtrack and score than in any other category! It’s packed with quintessential 80s classic songs, like these:
Playing with the Boys by Kenny Loggins. Featuring in Tom Cruise’s shirtless beach volleyball scene, this song plays when Maverick (wearing full-length jeans) and Goose beat their adversaries. Of course, then Maverick bails because he has a date with his love interest, Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis.
Take My Breath Away by Berlin. It must be good because this song plays in Top Gun no less than four times! Incidentally, the band named themselves Berlin in an attempt to make people think they were German, but they were really an American new wave band.
Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins. Appearing in the movie three times, this is the ultimate fighter jet song.
You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ by The Righteous Brothers. This one is a classic from 1964 that made a comeback more than 20 years later because of the Top Gun Movie. It plays in the movie when Maverick and the other naval officers lip sync it to Charlie in the bar while it plays on the jukebox.
Show Off with Top Gun Quotes
The Top Gun movie offers a ton of quotable lines that can be used to make an impression. For instance, you can ask your friends for permission to buzz the tower. If they say no, do it anyway. If they ask YOU to buzz the tower, be sure to say “Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.” Just be prepared for them to buzz you anyway.
Or, even easier, simply tell everyone you see that you have the need, the need for speed. “You can be my wingman forever”, “Let’s turn and burn!” and “Remember boys, no points for second place” are also some other great lines from the film.
Learn Some Fun Facts About Top Gun
Even those who consider themselves to be pretty big fans of the movie might have something new to learn when it comes to Top Gun Day trivia! Here are some fun facts to impress friends and coworkers alike on the day:
Top Gun is set in San Diego, California and many of the sites for filming can still be visited, including Charlie’s little blue house and Kansas City Barbeque, which still features Goose’s piano.
Tom Cruise, at only 5’7”, wore lifts in his shoes to balance out the taller 5’10” Kelly McGillis as his love interest in the movie.
The movie didn’t originally have a love scene. That scene between Maverick and Charlie was added later, after test audiences said it needed one.
Bryan Adams was invited to sing on the Academy Award winning soundtrack, but he backed out because he thought the movie promoted war.
Play Top Gun Video Games
There are also two Top Gun video games currently available. The first is simply called Top Gun and was released for iOS devices by Freeverse Software. The second is called Top Gun: Hardlock. It comes from 505 Games, and is playable on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
Talk to a Member of the Armed Forces
There are many ways one could enjoy and relieve the excitement of the movie, but perhaps one of the more meaningful things you could do is to find a member of the armed forces, particularly an aviator, and thank them for keeping the skies safe. Ultimately, without someone up there, we might not have the movie, or the day, down here.
However you choose to celebrate, be sure to raise a glass for Goose, Maverick, Iceman and the rest of Top Gun class of 1986. Let the world know that you haven’t lost that loving feeling, even after all this time.

For all the roles they’ve played in literature, cinematography, and art as a whole, unicorns more than deserve their own day. And now is the time to learn more about National Unicorn Day.
How to Celebrate National Unicorn Day
The best way to celebrate this day would be to find a fun, fanciful activity to enjoy with family or friends. Get creative with art, music or other projects that can promote free-thinking and fantasy. Or try out some of these other ideas to celebrate National Unicorn Day.

Watch a Film that includes Unicorns
One activity that could be perfectly suited to this day would be sitting down to watch a good fantasy film, preferably one that includes unicorns, of course! It’s likely to have been a long time since having watched The Chronicles of Narnia. Try out one of these interesting films that include a unicorn or two:
Legend (1986). This less-than-well-known film actually features a fairly noteworthy cast, including Tom Cruise, Tim Curry and Mia Sara, where darkness (Tim Curry) seeks to eradicate unicorns from existence.
Stardust (2007). Starring Clare Danes, this fantasy movie shows how a fallen star (in the shape of a woman) is rescued with the help of a unicorn.
Blade Runner (1982). In this sci-fi film, the unicorn plays a symbolic role in a dream as well as in the form of a paper origami shape.
Fantasia 2000 (1999). This remake of the classic animated Disney film features Mickey Mouse and his incredible group of friends–including a brief scene with a unicorn who laughs at the other animals going to Noah’s ark.
Throw a Unicorn Themed Party
National Unicorn Day shouldn’t be kept a secret! So get the word out by inviting a few friends, family members, neighbors or co-workers to gather together while enjoying and celebrating everything pertaining to unicorns.
Invite guests to dress up as their favorite unicorn or fantasy character. Provide treats and snacks, like the rainbow themed cupcakes featured below. Decorate using rainbow balloons and streamers, as well as tinsel and glitter of all kinds. It’s like that cups, napkins and paper plates with unicorn designs can easily be sourced at a party store.
Read Books and Learn Some Unicorn History
The above information featuring the history of unicorns only scratches the surface of what can be learned about these fascinating, mythical creatures. Head on over to the library and check out some books that tell the many ways unicorns have played a part in literature over the centuries.
Learn about Unicorns in Scottish Culture
One fun aspect about National Unicorn Day that would be interesting to research (that most people don’t realize) is the fact that the unicorn is actually the national animal of Scotland. This fantastical creature is deeply beloved and has been on the Scottish Royal Coat of Arms at least since the mid-1500s.
History of National Unicorn Day
Unicorns have been mentioned in literature as far back as antiquity—ancient Greek writers believed they lived in the faraway and exotic country of India, which was then largely unknown to Europeans at the time. However, at the time the unicorn was thought to be a powerful, fierce animal that was not to be meddled with.
In the Middle Ages, the unicorn’s image was based greatly on Bible passages that were thought to speak of these animals, and unicorns slowly came to be seen as a symbol of strength, the purest kind of love, and the pets of virgin women.
In fact, there is even a sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding a unicorn on her lap and patting it in Warsaw’s National Museum located in the capital of Poland ! Thus, unicorns have been appearing in works of literature for thousands of years, although it is now thought by many scholars that this case of unicorns appearing in the bible may have been a translation error.
The most prominent more modern examples of unicorns that can be found in fantasy literature include Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. Not only that, but the whole immensely popular My Little Pony franchise is also based on unicorns, with the series beginning in the 1980s and being revived a few decades later.
National Unicorn Day was created to celebrate these majestic creatures and help adults remember how much more fun life can be when they let a little magic in sometimes. And this is a great beginning for the celebration of National Unicorn Day!
