Something of a continuation of a similar piece I did back in 2021, which also included the Rudolphs from the 1964 Rankin Bass special and the 1998 movie, but I added a third version I also watched religiously as a child- the 1948 Max Fleischer short.
I’m aware there’s probably other Rudolph adaptations as well, these are just the ones that I personally grew up with

Ngl, I seem like I have a thing for Bullied-Victim Protagonists in a Holiday-Tradition-themed Story who came from a Book that share a Special Super Power beneath them who they use to overcome their own Fear.
While also following a Fairytale Aspect trope beneath their Character Arc (Cinderella/Ugly Duckling).

A round-up of ministry technology:
Tumblr media
Chapter Two: The Cardinal
Copia is carrying the Siemens R836 stereo, produced c. 1988
Tumblr media
Chapter 5: The Call
The TV in the hospital is the Toshiba T277Z, produced c. 1977
Tumblr media
p.s., the first clip playing on the TV is twins running away in Chapter 1 :-)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter Seven: New World Redro
Nihil's typewriter is the Olympia SM9, produced c. 1965-1968
Tumblr media
Chapter Ten: Home Coming and Special Guests
The record player in Cardi's room is actually not vintage! It's the Victrola 3-in-1 Bluetooth Record Player, produced c. 2017
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To get deep into minutiae, the other thing they pan past on the shelf that looks like an antique cathedral radio is actually a piece of ceramic -- you can see it's holding a book. It's made from a commercially available plaster mold, namely the Duncan DM-355 B, which was manufactured in the late 70s. Here are photos of the same ceramic with a different glaze, and the mold itself :-)
Tumblr media
Chapter Twelve: Ghost Goes Hollywood
Cardi's camcorder is part of the Sony CCD-TRVX5 series, produced c. 1998
(My understanding is the CCD-TRV75, 85 and 93 all have the same body -- but it's one of those.)
Tumblr media
Chapter 16: Tax Season
Cardi's TV is the Samsung BT-317TR, produced c. 1984
Tumblr media
He is, of course, playing the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), produced c. 1986-1990
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The radio is the Motorola TT23FS, produced c. 1968
The phone gadget is the Tele-Rest, produced c. 1958
The alarm clock is a Lawson Model 215 Sierra, produced c. 1948-1981 (Lawson clock history seems... complicated)
As for the phone itself... I can tell you it's this exact phone, since this prop house seems to have supplied all the props in this video, but there are too many identical puke-green rotary phones produced between the 1940s and 1970s for me to pretend I can tell which one it is (same goes for the other two rotary phones in Chapter Five).
Tumblr media
Rite Here Rite Now
The TV backstage is (probably) a Magnavox 20MT4405/17, produced c. 2006
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you turn the brightness on RHRN way the fuck up, you can see a piece of tape over the brand badge on the TV. (But that can't stop me!!!)
I'm sure most of the tech choices are just for humor and Tobias's personal nostalgia as a child of the 80s, but I do love way all of the old tech characterizes the ministry. It's not clear if they're just luddites, cheapskates, out of money, too bureaucratically inefficient to upgrade (like the government!) or if it's something completely different. But that's why set dressing is fun, it tells stories indirectly :-)

Brother Khalid Abdul Muhammad (1948–2001) was a prominent African-American activist and orator known for his unapologetic views on race and social justice. He was a fiery speaker and a great figure in the fight against systemic racism and oppression.
Khalid Muhammad was born Harold Moore Jr. in Houston, Texas. He attended Dillard University in New Orleans, where he studied theology. Later, he furthered his studies at Pepperdine University in California. It was during his college years that he became involved with the Nation of Islam (NOI).
Khalid Muhammad rose to prominence within the Nation of Islam as a minister and a top aide to Louis Farrakhan. He became the National Spokesman for the NOI and was known for his powerful speeches advocating black empowerment, self-reliance, and resistance against white supremacy. However, his incendiary remarks, particularly in a 1993 speech at Kean College, led to his suspension from the Nation of Islam.
After leaving the NOI, Khalid Muhammad became active in the New Black Panther Party (NBPP), an organization that claims ideological lineage to the original Black Panther Party but with distinct differences such as being more pan african centred. He became the group's chairman in 1998, using his leadership to expand its platform of black empowerment and militant resistance to racial injustice.
The NBPP, under Khalid Muhammad's leadership, was known for its radical and militant stance. It advocated for black self-defense, reparations for slavery, and independence from systemic oppression. Critics, including members of the original Black Panther Party, accused the NBPP of distorting the original Panthers' legacy and focusing more on confrontational rhetoric.
Khalid Muhammad's speeches often emphasized black pride, self-determination, and unity. Khalid Muhammad supporters viewed him as a fearless advocate for the black community. His death in 2001 from a brain "aneurysm" marked the end of a contentious but impactful career in activism.

Rick Majerus
Tumblr media
Physique: Heavyset Build Height: 6'1"
Richard Raymond Majerus (February 17, 1948 – December 1, 2012; aged 64) was an American basketball coach and TV analyst. He coached at Marquette University (1983–1986), Ball State University (1987–1989), the University of Utah (1989–2004), and Saint Louis University (2007–2012). Majerus's most successful season came at Utah in the 1997–98 season, when the Utes finished as runners-up in the 1998 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Majerus was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Majerus was a fan favorite and cult figure around college basketball, known for his portly, rotund figure and his quirky, jovial personality. The portly coach was unabashed in his love of food, always quick with a restaurant recommendation for whatever town his teams were playing in. He enjoyed bratwurst, a sausage popular in his native Wisconsin which is fitting as I would have loved to feed him my love sausage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Born in Sheboygan, Wis., Majerus graduated from Marquette University High School in 1967, attending Marquette University. After graduating from Marquette in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in history, Majerus was hired by McGuire as a full-time assistant in 1971. After three years as head coach at Marquette, he became an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks for the 1986–87 season. After a stint at Ball State University for two seasons, Majerus accepted the position at Utah in 1989, leading the "Runnin Utes" to a 1996 sweet 16. Majerus worked as a game and studio analyst for ESPN from 2004 to 2007 before accepting the head coaching position at Saint Louis University.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Majerus, married once for two years in the mid-1980s, childless and dated the same woman the last 25 years of his life, famously lived in a Marriott hotel near the University of Utah campus; everyone knew where to find him. Majerus has been in a state of health risk for many years before dying of heart failure in a Los Angeles hospital on December 1, 2012. From what I can tell, he was a jovial, crude, basketball-obsessed coach who had nice tits, packing something big and didn’t mind being nude around people. Sounds like my type of guy.

Mark Rothko, Untitled, 1948 oil on canvas 45 x33 5/8" © 1998 Kate Rothko Prizel & Christopher Rothko/Artists Rights Society (ARS),
Displayed at Pace Gallery exhibition 1/12-2/10/90
This is only the second scan I have seen of this and the first one is very much redder, but I have not seen it in person to say what's more accurate. In my experience, the pace gallery, if this was even taken by then, tends to take darker shots of the paintings then a lot of other places do. There was an old pace gallery book where I would swear that everything was just much darker than it actually appeared in life, but looking at the new Louis Vuitton, showing in Paris, some of those old pace gallery scans are more accurate than I thought.
Most of this has to do with the lighting, photographers choose, sometimes this lighting is forced on them by the type of lighting a gallery has. At one time, this kind of big color shift would surprise me, but now I see it all the time.

Broadway Divas Tournament: FINAL
So. It's all come down to this. Were any of us truly surprised? Are any of us really prepared?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald (1970) holds the record for most Tony acting awards a person has ever won. She is one of five actors to be nominated across all four respective acting categories and the only person to win every one (and the only actress out of the three who is still living...). Her stage work includes: Ragtime (1998), Porgy and Bess (2012), and Lady Day at Emmerson's Bar and Grill (2014). Internationally acclaimed concert tours, Tony host, crown jewel of the American Stage. Grammy winner, Tony winner, Emmy winner. Get this woman an Oscar, stat. This is a BROADWAY Diva tournament, and Audra Ann McDonald is BROADWAY.
Seven-time Tony nominee, two-time winner Bernadette Peters (1948) has a sixty-plus year stage career of monumental proportions. Considered the foremost Sondheim interpreter, their collaborative works include Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Gypsy (2003), and Follies (2011). She has a thriving concert career, and was a co-founder of the beloved Broadway Barks event each year in Shubert Alley. She has an honorary third Tony (Isabelle Stevenson Award) for her outstanding advocacy and philanthropy. This is a Broadway DIVA tournament, and I mean come on, look at her. That is the quintessential DIVA right there.

"I don't know what to tell you if you're somehow on the fence here. Audra Ann McDonald is Broadway's most beloved darling, and that's a quantifiable fact. Look at her award shelf. Her voice could resurrect the dead. She is an Oscar away from EGOT status. She has overcome almost insurmountable racism on the Great White Way. She is everything to me. A triple threat of acting, singing, and dancing where not one takes a backseat and she looks and sounds amazing at all times. "

"I have been besotted by Bernadette Peters (and her bosom) for more than two decades. Her name is synonymous with Broadway. She is THE Broadway Baby. She started in showbusiness as a child and has not left in seven decades. Her voice is emblematic of a time when we let people with unique, fascinating, wildly different voices star in shows rather than have everyone bow to the BA-ification of Broadway where everyone sounds the same and no one is distinctive."
