“I would like to say what a marvel that you exist, and that you move around in the world as you do.
The magnitude, on every level of experience and meaning, of the task in which you have involved me, exceeds all of my preconceptions. And it is teaching me to extend myself beyond what I thought was possible for me. “
- New year’s greeting from Rothko to Dominique de Menil, 1966

Since the Anderson Collection at Stanford follow me on Instagram I thought they wouldn't mind me stealing their post of them moving Pink and White over Red, 1957.
You don't see a lot of of these paintings in transit pictures.

Another fake from the same account, that won't allow comments or stop posting fakes. Block this person, would be my advice

Good things come to those who wait? For years and years I've struggled with this picture having posted this particular scan as an alternate because all the other available scans were pretty much just green with a blue tint on the edge
It was confusing to see so many that looked the same but to see that this scan was a higher quality even if color-wise it was running against the grain of what I had seen and what other people had presented.
But yesterday my suspicion was verified when I dug up a picture of this painting on display in a gallery, confirming that it is indeed a blue and brown painting at least under some conditions , and while we all know colors change with light, I feel confident and now assuming that this is a good scan and not some kind of anomaly.
So enjoy this formerly green painting, in something that is at least close to its natural look.
I think it's quite lovely

Note
a bit long, but -- today i was looking back through some of my old diaries, and it really hit home the extent to which rothko changed my life.
in 2017 i was working a dead-end job i was absolutely overqualified for, underfulfilled in, and desperately trying to claw my way out of. i had decided to legally change my name, which was a long time coming but allowed me some of my autonomy back.
in order to do that, i had to go in person to the public records building in dtla, and since i had to take the day off to go there anyway, i decided to make a day of it and treat myself to the moca a few blocks away afterwards.
i had always liked art, but didn't know much about art history and never really "got" modern art. but since i was there alone and not trying to impress anyone, i didn't feel as silly going all they way up to the suggested viewing distance line (about two feet away) at the rothko exhibit and staring up at the art -- no. 61 rust and blue, to be precise.
i had an immediate, visceral experience of "OH, I GET IT NOW" that i had never felt with a piece of modern art before. that piece in particular, to me, looks very apocalyptic at that scale -- a sky of fire burning away over a deep blue ocean. but at that time in my life, i FELT very apocalyptic, and in a way it validated everything i was keeping pent up inside me, frustrated at where things seemed to be headed. i loved it. it felt like an impetus for change.
that love of rothko stayed with me as i searched for work, and eventually found a job not too far away from moca so i could go and visit more often. after a few years at that job, i was finally earning enough to move downtown…i’ve been there for five months now and it still blows my mind that i can walk a few blocks and visit rothkos in person (whenever they’re on display, at least, which is decently frequent!). i got a huge print of rust and blue for my new apartment, and it hangs right over my work desk now.
Thank you so much for sharing this. It's good to hear how people found Rothko and the different feelings it evoked.
