Elizabeth Vaughan Okie (1894). William McGregor Paxton (American, 1869-1941). Oil on canvas. Boston聽Athen忙um. The Athen忙um鈥檚 portrait is Paxton鈥檚 earliest image of Elizabeth Vaughan Okie, Paxton鈥檚 future wife and artist in her own right, and may have been painted specifically for her. With its vibrant colors and loose handling of paint, it is a good example of the rather free, Impressionist style in which Paxton worked in his early years, before he turned to a more hard-edged, linear style. Most of Paxton鈥檚 early paintings were destroyed in a studio fire, making this a rare survivor from that period of his professional life.
