Billy Batson and Carol Danvers both go by Captain Marvel at one point or another. Does Batson end up deferring to Danvers and going by Shazam instead, or does Danvers take up one of her dozens of old monikers? If Batson goes by Shazam, how does he introduce himself without getting zapped back into Billy form?
Billy's never gone by Shazam in the BronzeRealms. For real, how does that even work? DC does stupid shit sometimes and we all know it.
Okay, with that out of the way let's do a timeline of the name "Captain Marvel" across heroes.
In 1940, the Justice Society of America are fighting off an attempted Kree invasion when they meet and are assisted by a mysterious man who calls himself Captain Marvel, who disappears soon afterwards.
Seeing him in action also seeds thoughts of rebellious inspiration in the mind of a young Kree soldier, who takes on the callsign Mar-Vell when he's promoted to Captain after the failure of his superiors.
In 1967, Mar-Vell goes rogue from the Kree and decides to hide out on earth, seeking out the surviving Justice Society. With their help, she transitions and starts a new identity under the name Wendy Lawson, and debuts shortly later as the superhero Captain Marvel.
In 1977, Lawson retires as Captain Marvel when she accidentally attracts Kree attention to earth again. Carol Danvers takes up the mantle shortly later, after gaining powers herself. At first she isn't comfortably with the legacy and goes by Ms Marvel, but Wendy persists that Carol should be Captain Marvel, so that doesn't last long.
In 1982, Wendy Lawson dies of cancer. The funeral is attended by a majority of the active or retired superheroes at that time.
In 1989, Carol Danvers is forced to flee earth by the rising Augment regimes (Khan Noonien Singh being the most noteworthy) when one of them causes the ecological collapse of multiple Kree star systems and frames her for having caused it, which even she herself believes, as a distraction that will successfully keep her occupied in space for decades to come.
In 2003, Billy Batson is inspired by the comicbooks loosely based on the adventures of Lawson (the same comics also inspire Jean Grey and Kamala Khan) to take on the name Captain Marvel when he gets unrelated superpowers from the wizard Shazam. In following years his adoptive siblings will join him and become known as the Captain Marvel family of heroes in Fawcett City.
In 2006, Billy Batson travels back in time to World War 2 and teams up with the Justice Society of America. He doesn't recognize the pre-transition Mar-Vell as one of the soldiers he fights against. However, working alongside actual soldiers in the Justice Society and seeing what wartime superheroing was like makes him rethink the military moniker "Captain", and afterward he starts going by CM1 instead (taking after his brother going by CM3). The press, despite his protests, will continue to refer to him as Captain Marvel for years to come.
In 2009, Rick Jones briefly goes by Captain Marvel after bonding with Genis-Vell, an unstable clone of the pre-transition soldier Mar-Vell. He retires the same year and encourages Genis to transition as Lawson had. Genis becomes Phyla-Vell and briefly maintains heroics as Captain Marvel, but leaves earth within a few months to try to build a new life and find an identity distant from the homes and legacy of Lawson.
In 2015, Carol Danvers discovers she was framed for space crimes, and why, and returns to earth, only to find the Eugenics War already ended without her back in 1998, with the surviving Augments having fled into space. She joins the New Avengers (this being the aftermath of the Avengers Civil War still).
Monica Rambeau never went by Captain Marvel... at least not in the still-extant timestream. She and multiple other heroes have memories of her serving as Captain Marvel, during the 5 years and 8 months of the aborted timestream in which "The Snap" occured. These five years were "reset" and erased by the Avengers, including Monica herself, in order to bring back the half the universe that Thanos had killed, and Monica chose to not take up the mantle again.

Batman is back with a vengeance. Three years after HBO Max and Cartoon Network first announced Batman: Caped Crusader — the adult-oriented animated series that was eventually canceled by the since-renamed Max streaming service, only to then be picked up at Prime Video — the new Batman TV show is about to hit the small screen. Set in 1940s Gotham City, Caped Crusader is described as "a reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens" of executive producers Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond), Matt Reeves (The Batman and The Penguin), and J.J. Abrams (Alias and Lost).
"We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City," Timm, Reeves, and Abrams said when announcing the series in 2021. "The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman's noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world."
Below, ComicBook is shining the Bat-Signal on everything we know so far about Batman: Caped Crusader, including the voice cast, release date, and the rogues who will populate the first solo Batman animated series in more than a decade.
Where Can I Watch Batman: Caped Crusader?
To watch Batman: Caped Crusader on Amazon's Prime Video, you'll need either a Prime Video subscription ($8.99 per month with ads, or $11.98/mo for ad-free) or an Amazon Prime membership ($14.99 per month with Prime Video ads, or $17.98/mo with ad-free Prime Video).
Batman: Caped Crusader Release Date
All episodes of Batman: Caped Crusader will premiere Thursday, August 1st, on Amazon Prime Video.
How Many Episodes Is Batman: Caped Crusader?
Batman: Caped Crusader season 1 consists of 10 episodes. In 2023, Prime Video announced a two-season order for the new series.
What Is Batman: Caped Crusader About?
The official description: "Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals run rampant and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear. Forged in the fire of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human — the Batman. His one-man crusade attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions spawn deadly, unforeseen ramifications."
Who Voices Batman in the Batman: Caped Crusader Cast?
The Batman: Caped Crusader voice cast includes Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass) in the title role as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets) as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Jamie Chung (Gotham) as Harley Quinn/Dr. Harleen Quinzel, and Diedrich Bader — a DC veteran whose credits include episodes of Batman Beyond, 2006's The Batman, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and the Max adult animated series Harley Quinn — as Two-Face/Harvey Dent.
Announced cast members in as-yet-unrevealed roles include Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Toby Stephens (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), Reid Scott (Venom), Dan Donohue (For All Mankind), Gary Anthony Williams (Hailey's on It!), Jason Watkins (The Crown), John DiMaggio (Futurama), Krystal Joy Brown (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), Michelle C. Bonilla (9-1-1: Lone Star), Eric Morgan Stuart (Fallout 4), Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), and Minnie Driver (The Witcher: Blood Origin).
Batman: Caped Crusader Villains
A cast announcement video revealed Linklater's Batman voice and the Dark Knight's rogue's gallery: The Penguin, Catwoman, Two-Face, Harley Quinn, the pyromaniac Firebug, Natalia Knight (in the comics, a reformed career criminal with photosensitive skin known as Nocturna, the mistress of the night), the phantom criminal called Gentleman Ghost, and Clayface (the Golden Age Clayface of the 1940s was Basil Karlo, a once-famous character actor and makeup expert turned costumed killer). Caped Crusader reimagines Dr. Harleen Quinzel as Asian American — and Bruce Wayne's psychologist. Here, her alter-ego as the jester-costumed Harley Quinn is independent from the Joker, who is noticeably absent from the roundup of Batman characters.
Batman: Caped Crusader Characters
Batman – A cold, remorseless avenger of evil, seemingly more machine than man. Forged in the fire of tragedy, every fiber of his being is dedicated to the eradication of crime. (The Batman suit is influenced by the character's earliest appearances in Detective Comics, by creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger, with longer, narrow ears, a collared cape, and with black gloves rather than the original purple.)
Bruce Wayne - To the public at large, Bruce Wayne is a shallow dilettante, apparently wasting his parents' vast fortune on frivolous pursuits and hedonistic pleasures. In fact, he's an elaborate facade, carefully constructed to divert attention from his activities as Batman.
Selina Kyle / "Catwoman" – Selena Kyle is a blithe and pampered heiress whose family lost their fortune after her father was imprisoned for embezzlement. Despite having the silver spoon yanked from her mouth, Selina refuses to quit living in the lap of luxury and becomes Catwoman as a "fun" way to maintain her lavish lifestyle.
Dr. Harleen Quinzel / "Harley Quinn" – Despite a personable and bubbly demeanor, Dr. Harleen Quinzel is a brilliant psychiatrist who treats some of Gotham's elite. However, as Harley Quinn, she is a different person, entirely. A creepy, quiet, calculating menace who secretly dispenses her twisted justice to the truly despicable among her elite clientele.
Commissioner Jim Gordon – Former beat cop close to retirement, Gordon was hired to play along with the corrupt system and run out the clock till he can draw a pension. But they've sorely underestimated Jim Gordon. His unassailable character brings him into conflict with dirty cops and crooked politicians, alike. Not to mention, he has to reckon with a deranged vigilante beating up Gotham's criminals.
Clayface – Thanks to his "unique" facial features, screen actor Basil Karlo has been forever typecast as a B-movie heavy. Frustrated by the limitations his appearance put on both his career and personal life (he fell hopelessly in love with his co-star), Karlo turned to an experimental serum that promised to change his face. However, not only does this serum ultimately disfigure his face, but it ruptures the last of his sanity – creating the tragic, vengeance seeking villain, Clayface.
Batman: Caped Crusader Creators
Batman: Caped Crusader comes from Warner Bros. Animation (My Adventures with Superman, Bat-Family), Abrams' Bad Robot Productions (Lovecraft Country, the Star Trek films) and Reeves' 6th & Idaho (2022's The Batman, The Batman – Part II). Along with Abrams, Reeves and Timm, Batman: Caped Crusader executive producers include head writer Ed Brubaker (DC's Batman comic, Gotham Central), James Tucker (Justice League Unlimited), Daniel Pipski (The Penguin), Rachel Rusch Rich (Castle Rock), and Sam Register (Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One and Part Two).

I wanted this one to be a warm-up drawing but of course it took longer than a warm-up. There was a small story in a 40s comic book whose main character caught my eye so I decided to draw him. Not completely accurately to the comic though.

Constructive criticism: The Spirit (2008)
Ah yes, The Spirit.
In 1940 cartoonist Will Eisner created The Spirit, a character who first appeared as the main feature of a tabloid-sized comic book insert distributed in the Sunday edition of Register and Tribune Syndicate newspapers. Popularly referred to as "The Spirit Section", the insert ran from June 2, 1940 to October 5, 1952.
Although predominantly a mix of crime drama, noir and mystery. The series defied reader expectations by wildly experimenting with genre and tone, including horror, slapstick comedy, romance, fantasy, metafiction and science fiction. In some stories, the role of the Spirit himself amounts to only a cameo appearance, with Paul Gravett noting that the character would often take a "back seat to the small dramas of losers, dreamers and ordinary joes", and that the series as a whole was, "as much as anything, about the human spirit". At the peak of its popularity, "The Spirit Section" was included in 20 American newspapers, with a total circulation of five million copies. *
I read several issues of the comic when I was little and really liked the way Will Eisner told the stories and drew characters.
In 1987 there was an attempt at making a live action movie made for TV that would work as a pilot for a TV series. It did not get a great reception. In a review for The New York Times, John Corry wrote "The Spirit wants very much to be good-humored. Mostly, though, it's just sappy." Will Eisner himself was not happy with it, calling it "Awful" and "Cardboard" and saying the experience watching it "made my toes curl".*
I saw this movie on TV several years ago and don`t remember all the details. But from what I remember I think that the movie`s problem was that it had that cheesiness that most superhero movies (with the exception of Donner`s Superman) had before Tim Burton`s Batman came out.
In 2008 A movie adaptation was made and released to the theaters, directed by Frank Miller, it didn`t do well financially or critically. It was Miller`s first time directing a movie (not based on one of his own IPs).
When I saw this film I first thought that the problem was that Miller tried to turn it into Sin City, but Sin City took itself more seriously. The problem lies more in that Miller had no restraints and threw in whatever he felt like whenever he felt like it. I have to admit, whenever a director has no restraints it can result in a delightfully bonkers movie, A so-bad-it`s-good film, a guilty pleasure. And if you like this movie then that`s great.
Personally, I liked the visual look, but making the main character pretty much immortal really lessens the stakes and the aforementioned lack of restraint was, at best, a double-edged sword for me.
So, if I could travel back in time and make some changes to this movie, what would I change?
Spirit`s healing factor
Not to be one of those "in the comics" kind of guy, but in the comics Spirits doesn`t have a healing factor. Comicbook accuracy aside, his healing factor pretty much makes him immortal and removes the stakes. I`d lose it. Spirit wouldn`t have any powers, the ressurection was just a one time thing.
Spirit`s narration
There`s quite a lot of it, I`d dial it down a bit. I`d start by removing all of Spirit`s proclamation of love for his city. There`s a lot of "My city is like a hot woman, I wanna hold her, touch her..." all that kind of stuff.
The fourth wall breaks: It`s not that the fourth wall breaks themselves are inherently bad, but it often comes at inopportune times. I`d lose them.
Spirit`s constant flirting with every woman he meets
I`d lose it. It just makes him unfocused, easily distracted and frankly, like a himbo. It makes it hard for me to believe that someone so easily swayed by a pretty face would be a functional crimefighter.
Showing the face of The Octopus
Once again, not to be one of those guys... but in the comic we never see the face of the Octopus. I like the idea of shooting the movie in front of a greenscreen and creating a stylized world in post-production like they did in Sin City. They could have used that to their advantage here and make it so that The Octopus is silhuetted and the only thing we see of his face are a pair of round glasses.
In the comics there was a character called Ebony White who was a kid and a sidekick to Spirit... and also a racist stereotype.
Here`s what I`m gonna do in my version: In one scene Spirit needs some information. He meets an african-american kid (named Eddie) and asks him if he knows anything about the info that he needs. Eddie says that his memory is hazy, Spirit refreshes his memory with some dollar bills and gets the info he needs.
Plot
The 1940s: In the beginning Denny Colt has already been The Spirit a year or two and works with the police.
The Octopus has four henchmen: Bob and Rob: two big, strong, heavy twins (basically Louis Lombardi`s character from the movie, but smarter and not clones).
Nick: A guy who is the boss of Bob and Rob, he is closer to Spirit`s body type. He is good at fighting and is faster and more agile than Bob and Rob. (Since Octopus is more of a manipulator and strategist who hides in the shadows and never (or at least rarely) engages in hand-to-hand combat, I created Nick as someone who Spirit can physically fight.)
Dr Schmerz: a sadistic scientist. Nick is not the boss of him, he answers directly to Octopus.
These four henchmen are not (to my knowledge) from the comics, I came up with them myself.
Characters from the comic that appeared in the movie that I´m keeping in my version: Sand Saref and Ellen Dolan. (If Ellen Dolan is like the girl next door that you can see yourself settle down with, Sand Saref is like a dangerous bad girl.)
Spirit finds out that Octopus is trying to recreate the formula that Dr Cobra created that brought Denny Colt back from the dead. (That`s where Dr Schmerz comes in.)
(I want to point out that Spirit got an early, unfinished version of the formula in his body. The finshed version wouldn`t lead to a one time resurrection, but triple the strength, stamina, durability, speed, ability and reflexes of the person it was injected into.)
Spirit tries to find people who knew Dr Cobra when he was alive before the badguys do. (They may know something about any secret hideout Cobra could have had where he kept his missing notes.) In one scene it is mentioned in the news that an ancient Egyptian necklace has been stolen.
In his search for people who knew Dr Cobra Spirit bumps into an old flame; Sand Saref. She flirts with him and wants him to go on a journey with her but he has to decline since he has more pressing matters to deal with.
Act 2: After a lot of searching Spirit finds someone who knew Cobra, let`s call him... Mac Guffin (subtle, I know). Guffin is serving time in prison, Spirit manages to convince the warden to let him move Guffin to a secret location.
Halfway to the secret location Spirit and Guffin gets ambushed by goons working for Octopus. They manage to kidnap Guffin. Spirit survives with only a few, minor injuries. Octopus manages to convince Guffin to talk and get some useful info out of him. Guffin`s info leads them to a shed out in the marsh, Spirit tails them. Octopus`s men finds a box with Dr Cobra`s missing notes. Now that Octopus has what he wanted he doesn`t nedd Guffin anymore and gives him a parting gift: some lead to the head.
Spirit reveals himself and fights Octopus`s henchmen but they overpower him, beat him up badly and leave him to die in the marsh. We get a flashback to Spirit`s early life.
A few years ago, Denny tried to stop Dr Cobra from creating something that would have helped Octopus. Denny fought him, got wounded and got some secret formula in his wounds. Cobra`s lab exploded, Cobra died and Denny was officially pronounced dead. a few days later, Denny came back from the dead, sought up Commissioner Dolan, revealed that he was still alive but asked Dolan to keep his secret. If his enemies thought he was dead, it would let him move more freely when it comes to crimefighting.
Act 3: Spirit wakes up in a hospital. Ellen Dolan shows up and reveals that Sand Saref found him half-dead in the marsh and brought him to the hospital. Ellen wants him to rest but he fears that there`s no time for that. He finds the badguys in their HQ and fights them. Sand Saref shows up and helps him in his fight, the two of them defeat the badguys. Nick dies (and maybe even Bob and Rob) but Octopus survives and lives to fight another day.
Sand reveals that she showed up because she was after an ancient Egyptian necklace (the one mentioned in the news). Octopus stole it from the rich guy (let`s call him Mr Richmoore) that she was gonna steal it from. Now that she has it she can sell it and live a life in luxury and she wants Spirit to join her. Spirit, being a man of principles doesn`t want to join her if it means living on the money of something that he knows is stolen. He doesn`t arrest her out of gratitude for her saving his life and he hopes that she`ll do the right thing and return the necklace. He walks away, the two part ways.
The Next day: The news report that the Egyptian necklace has been returned, not to Mr Richmoore, but a museum in Egypt where it belongs. Spirit walks through the city, has an inner monologue about how justice prevails and is ready for new adventures.
The End
And that`s how I would do it. Not great but hopefully not bad.
*Source: wikipedia
It is of course very easy for me to write these because I have the luxury of hindsight. And unlike the filmmakers I didn`t have a movie studio full of corporate suits breathing down my neck, focus grouping the movie to death, forcing in unnecessary changes and pressuring me to get it made before a deadline.
Why do I write these?
For several reasons. I`m nitpicky. Sometimes the movies I criticize aren`t bad, I just like my own ideas better. Sometimes the movies I critize are bad. I care about good storytelling and it`s a fun excerize in creativity and script doctoring.
But also because I have a lot of of free time.
-----------------------------------
Started writing this 2024-09-22
If you`ve been following me for a while you know that this movie has been on my to-do list for quite some time. Glad to finally get it out of my head.
Comments are appreciated.
Other movies on my Constructive Criticism list that you can look forward to
The Dark Knight trilogy
And as usual: English is not my first language, so if my writing doesn`t seem to flow naturally, you know why.
