Julius Caesar
c. 1455–60
Mino da Fiesole (Italian, c. 1430–1484)
garland by Mino da Fiesole and Workshop (Italian, c. 1430–1484)
"Renowned Roman general and statesman Julius Caesar (100–44 BCE) appears here as a political rather than military leader, worn by the burdens of office, with carefully described signs of aging. Mino probably used ancient coins from the collection of the Medici, Florence's ruling family, as his starting point for this sculpture. However, the complex carving, the clinging drapery, and the psychological intensity all characterize the inventiveness Renaissance artists brought to classical subject matter. In this case, Caesar offered an important model for leadership, masculinity, and composure. The garland is clearly by a different hand, but passages, such as the ribbons and flowers in low relief, correspond to details found in other decorative carvings from Mino's workshop. Initially, the limestone setting was probably put into a wall, perhaps in a lunette over the door, from which it was later removed. However, the relationship between the garland and the relief has not yet been clarified and is the subject of ongoing research."

1458 Update: This was a rough year for the Westbrook/Volkov family. Etta fell ill with the flu and ended up passing away, while little Chronos succumbed to tuberculosis. Left as a widower for a second time and faced with the loss of his youngest son, Eddie is determined that he needs to get away from this cursed land and family and will be moving back to the mainland with Hermes and Nesoi. Gaia has decided to stay with Achilles and his new bride, Stacey, as they move to the smaller cottage on the family property.
Each branch of the family is looking for a new start, but there are rumblings of war on the horizon. Will they be able to find the peace and happiness they're chasing?

This has to be one of the busiest religious paintings I have ever seen in my life. I thought it was a modern day satire.

There are good things in this world still
Today, I learned the Etruscan shrew is the world's lightest mammal, at just 1.2 grams.
Tumblr media
Today, I also learned that Kitti's Hog-nosed bat is the smallest mammal in the world, at just 1.1-1.3 inches in length
Tumblr media
Today, I dug a little pack of venison loin from my freezer and thawed it in the sink for a short while. I put the two small pieces on some tin foil and pulled the edges up to make a small bowl, and then added salt, lowry's, garlic, butter, and a little soy sauce, closed the top, and baked it. My little brother showed up just as they finished cooking, to collect a feather he had asked me about earlier this week, and I was able to send him home with one of them for dinner. Also it was delicious and perfectly cooked actually.

A little while ago, I was asked by a stranger if I could mentor them in mouse breeding. I've never mentored anyone, though I know it's apparently a common thing in breeding. Today, I learned her mice had their first litter! She showed me the mice she had to work with, and lamented that they were not the kinds she really WANTED to work with. But I looked at the mice and told her actually, you HAVE all the genes you need for 2 of the 3 colors you want to work with, and you only need pied for the last (which is a common mutation)! So I will be able to help her get to her desired lines!
There are good things left in this world, however small. This is your opportunity to reblog this and share your good things with each other, or check the notes if you need a reminder.
