Statue of Aphrodite of Milos known as 'Venus de Milo', circa 100 B.C.
Tumblr media
Statue of Aphrodite of Milos known as 'Venus de Milo', circa 100 B.C. / marble, height 202 cm. (Milos is the southwestern-most island in the Cyclades group, Greece)
The Aphrodite of Milos, more famously known as the Venus de Milo, is an ancient Greek marble sculpture created in the Hellenistic period, likely between 130 and 90 BC, and is one of the most recognized works of ancient Greek sculpture. Discovered on the island of Milos in 1820, it is believed to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love (known as Venus in Roman mythology). The statue is renowned for its artistic beauty and is housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, though it famously lacks its arms.
