I had a dream last night where I was driving a car that had no brakes. It kept going faster and faster, and I kept trying to steer it clear of pedestrians and people on motorbikes. As far as anxiety dreams go, that’s straight out of central casting.

I have a dreams tag on this blog, but it doesn’t seem to have as many dreams on it as it should. For some reason, I don’t write a lot about my dreams, even though dreams -- that’s something I find really fascinating. I guess maybe because dreams are very personal things. Maybe the most personal thing. They happen exclusively within the confines of ones own mind, without the presence of any other person. Think of it as one of those you-had-to-be-there kind of things, except there’s literally no way you could’ve been there.

In real life, if I told you a you-had-to-be-there kind of story, I could still describe the events knowing fully well that everything else around the story will conform to the same laws of physics that you and I both know. 

In the dream world, that’s not always a given. 

“So I was walking on water, but it wasn’t really water, it was actually more like this thick gassy substance, except it wasn’t soft and fluffy like a cloud, it was hard like coal, but white.”

Imagine a comedian trying to tell a joke, but after every other line, they pause to explain the pre-mature joke that hasn’t even picked up yet.

So it makes perfect sense why no one would want to listen to another person go on and on about their dreams, but it’s precisely for this reason that I think a dream is one of the most intimate things one person can share with another.
