Beth's birthday was recently, he turned 4 years old 🎀

I created Beth on September 13th 2020. I created him to cope with my religious psychosis, hence his full name being "bethlehem". I was an unmedicated schizophrenic at the time and very suicidal. I had made around 10 suicide attempts between the ages 12-17, most of which took place during my psychosis. I also struggled with self harm. I had never really had a vent oc before but I decided to make one. I won't share the vent art of beth because it's very personal and I don't know if I'll ever be able to share with anyone what exactly was going on in my head, I even struggle to talk about it with therapists and psychiatrists. Beth grew with me through some of the worst years of my life. He has gone through so many major changes throughout these 4 years. When I finally decided to start my transition he helped me accept myself better. When I went viral for my post coming out as a lesboy he became a symbol of defiance for me and helped me cope with the mass amount of hate I was receiving from hundreds of thousands of people. Beth has been here for so many major events in my life. I haven't attempted suicide in over 2 years now, and I've been clean from self harm for some months (not sure exactly I don't keep track). In a way he saved me, I don't know where I'd be if I didn't have him.

For eight more months until [Mario's] contract ended in September 2023, he worked with the right side of his body going numb. He wouldn’t even notice he was cutting his fingers.

He has always felt he was being treated unfairly, but this was something else. “We had a Dutch chief engineer, he suffered a heart attack as I suffered a stroke, he was immediately airlifted. A helicopter took him to the shore in Florida to get immediate medical attention. Because he’s Dutch.”

Beyond Mario’s medical experience, the uneven treatment in terms of wage is institutional. For years, Dutch ships have been paying Filipinos and Indonesians less than their European counterparts. This unequal wage system is state-sanctioned because companies were awarded legal opinion that says this was necessary to preserve the viability of the maritime sector.

It is ironic because in 1997, the Institute’s predecessor, the Equal Treatment Commission, sanctioned this discriminatory clause. The commission believed then that paying Filipinos and Indonesians less falls within the exemption of the Dutch Equality Act. The law effectively allows “indirect discrimination which is objectively justified by a legitimate aim and where the means to achieve that aim are appropriate and necessary.”

“We want to reverse this [1997 judgment],” said [Michael de Castro, Mario’s Philippine lawyer], “because there’s really a global movement away from it. In the words of one seafarer, this has been a race to the bottom for Filipinos. As long as they earned in dollars, they’d do it, no matter how unequal the wages are.”

As of 2021, Filipinos are the top nationality of seafarers in the world, with Indonesians ranking fifth.

But Filipinos are also often victims of sea abandonment. According to the International Transport Workers’ Federation, Filipinos are the fifth “most abandoned nationality,” [...]

In terms of pay gaps, the Netherlands ranks 13th in the world with the highest migrant pay gap across industries, according to the 2020 report of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The report shows that on average, migrant workers employed in the Netherlands earn 19.9% less than their Dutch counterparts. [...]

Space bulletin: First of all, geomagnetic activity reached Kp7 (G3) levels last night with the arrival of a CME, and apparently people were able to photograph aurora between the clouds using their phones from here in sydney around 7:15pm. Second of all, comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is just a couple of weeks away. Closest approach to the sun is 27th september, peak brightness is 9th october, closest approach to earth is 12th october. Today we have an updated forecast for the comet's magnitude:

TL;DR: Observations suggest that forward scattering will play a very significant role in enhancing the comet's brightness. Joseph N. Marcus (one of the main academics studying foward scattering in comets, whose studies form the basis of many predictive models) reports that forward scattering will brighten the comet from magnitude 2 or 3, to magnitude -4 or -5. This table from the article specifies magnitudes for each date around when the comet is brightest:

Lower/more negative magnitude equals brighter. For reference, comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE peaked at magnitude 0.5, and was visible to the eye in the early morning, 15 degrees from the sun. Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will be about 15 degrees away from the sun on the 5th and 13th of october (though its altitude above the horizon will depend on your latitude). At it's peak brightness on 9th october, it'll be just 3.5 degrees from the sun, making it only visible during the daytime, but still possibly bright enough to see, as long as you can block the sun using a building or some other structure. Don't stare at the unshielded sun trying to find the comet please!

The visibility of a comet depends on time and location, so use a digital planetarium such as Stellarium to figure out when and where it'll be visible for your location.

DEEP DIVE INTO THE KILLERS’ AMERICA

Pressure machine depicts the daily life of a small american town in a springsteenian style deftly taken on by their singer, Brandon Flowers. The band tell of their reunion with guitarist Dave Keuning and consider their return to the scene with prudence.

At the onset of the pandemic, when it became obvious that the Killers 2020 tour would not happen, Brandon Flowers started thinking back to his childhood spent in the small isolated town of Nephi, Utah. “There was a nostalgia in the air and a little bit of sadness too, " says the singer, "all those stories resurfaced as I was thinking back to the place where I was in the 90s.”

These “stories” make up the fertile ground for the Killers’ new opus, Pressure Machine, released August 13th, a concept album about life in Nephi told from the point of view of several of the town’s inhabitants, that broaches varied topics: [from] prescription drug abuse to poverty, by way of criminality, drugs, homophobia and depression. Despite the dark tone of the record, there are strokes of hope and joy sprinkled along the album.

“When I was writing these songs, I was thinking among other things of Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio, or of John Steinbeck’s The Pastures of heaven, says Flowers, where multiple short stories all take place in the same setting. For some reason, I dared to try it myself. Once I realised they were going to take place here and they would be true stories, everything became obvious to us.”

Brandon Flowers wrote the lyrics before the music was composed, scattering pictures of Nephi around his [computer] keyboard to get inspiration. When they were ready, the band gathered in their studio in Cotati, California, with producers Jonathan Rado and Shawn Everett,

the same team who worked on Imploding the Mirage the year prior. It was early 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic. “It was hard, says Flowers, Shawn has a penchant for hypochondria. He would wear glasses, a protective visor, and three masks in the studio. It was crazy. The bassist Marl [Stoermer] also had a hard time, and he could not get into the studio. But we would wear masks as well and get tested regularly. We were quite diligent.”

The album opens with “West Hills”, which tells the story of a desperate Nephi townie who gets arrested for “oxy” possession. “They got me for possession of them hillbilly heroin pills enough to kill the horses that run free in the west hills”, sings Flowers. The record turns even darker with “Terrible Thing”, which focuses on a gay teenager contemplating suicide. “There were kids I grew up with and only discovered years later that they were gay, recalls Flowers, it must have been so hard on them. I think the world is progressing in a more positive and more inclusive direction, but it was still the 90s and people would keep such things to themselves.”

Most of the songs are pulled from Flowers’ own memories in Nephi or things he read these past few years, but in “Desperate Things”, he chose to write the fictional story of a cop falling in love with a victim of domestic violence and ends up murdering her husband. It’s a story that would have easily found its place in Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, and that is unlike any other song from the Killers’ repertoire.

“I chose a story that caused a scandal in town when I lived there, and I took a few liberties in the third verse to turn it into a murderous ballad, explains Flowers. In a typical pop or rock song, there are only two verses. It’s only when you start looking into Springsteen and [John] Prine, for example, that you find a third or fourth verse. But it only serves to flesh out a story.”

“In Another Life” and “In The Car Outside” linger over disappointed dreams and bitter regrets of middle age, but the album ends on a true hope with “The Getting By”. “But maybe it's the stuff it takes to get up in the morning and put another day in, son that holds you 'til the getting's good…”

The album includes appearances from Joe Pug, Sara Watkins and Phoebe Bridgers, and marks the return of the Killers guitarist Dave Keuning. He did not take part in Imploding the Mirage or the last tours because of personal problems and the exhaustion from the long years spent on the roads. He was not involved in the entire creative process, but “In The Car Outside” and “A Pressure Machine” both start off on his guitar lines, and he plays on other songs from the album. “It was cool that he came back, declares drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. You always realise what someone brings to the table the moment he comes into or out fo a room. It was nice to have his input again in the studio. We’ve been playing together for about 20 years. It felt good.”

They had almost finished recording when they decided to send an NPR employee to Nephi to record interviews with the inhabitants. He came back with incredibly personal stories, so lively that the band decided to open each song on the album with excerpts from those recordings. “We were right in the mastering phase, but to us, it was the last ingredient we needed to complete the project," says Vannucci. It gave us a better grounding in reality than our interpretations through songs and music… They were people with their accents and their stories. It’s what allowed us to put the project together and strengthen it.”

The band gave a virtual concert at the end of June for the Splendour in the Grass festival in Australia, with Keuning and Stoermer back on stage with the band for the first time in years, but they aren’t planning to launch an official tour before next March when they go to New Zealand. They will perform in North America in August 2022. But first, they performed on August 21st at the We Love NYC concert in Central Park, along with Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, LL Cool J, Elvis Costello and many others.

They will also be playing the Firefly Festival in Delaware on September 24th, and the Sandjam Music Festival in Florida at the beginning of October. For now, according to the band, Keuning is planning to join them on the road, but Stoermer will stay home. Tour bassist Jake Blanton will take his place again.

“We will play a trial concert in Terminal 5 [in New York] before the Central Park concert, " declares Flowers. We’ve had incredible concerts at Terminal 5. I cannot stop thinking about the song we’re gonna open the set with. I hope I’ll keep my cool. Playing live is a part of our identity and it’s something that we missed, this connection to the people of this community.”

Many bands are currently on the road, including Dave Matthews Band, Phish, and Green Day, but the Killers are being very careful by accepting no major concert as headline act before 2022. “We don’t want to be a band that spreads Covid or the K variant, " explains Vannucci. There are a lot of unknowns related to touring and questions of responsibility. And just out of respect for the people and so that everyone stays healthy, we wanted to remain prudent in that regard and not jump the gun too fast.”

Even if they will have two full albums filled with songs they have never played live when they get back on the road, they’re already considering another record. The band is at the very early stages of conception. “We had meetings for a week in San Diego notlong ago, at  Dave’s, says Flowers. We were together the four of us, it was the first time we were doing that in years. But we must rehearse in January for the tour. I don’t know if we’ll find the time [to finish another album], but we will certainly meet again before Christmas.”

In the meantime, Flowers is eager to share Pressure Machine with the world. And working on the album finally gave him the opportunity to see Nephi in a very different light. “When I was a teenager, I wanted to leave. It’s only way later that I developed a better understanding and another view of this town’s beauty. I was so free there. People didn’t even need to lock their doors. I had a different upbringing there. I can appreciate that now.”

David as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing (the first time he did it, that is!)

David Tennant fans are aware of 2011's brilliant Much Ado About Nothing, in which DT starred as Benedick, alongside Catherine Tate as Beatrice. Filmed at the Wyndham's Theatre in London and directed by Josie Rourke, the production was recorded and offered on Digital Theatre.

But did you know David had played Benedick before?

Yep - he sure has!

It was in 2001, a full decade before his production with Catherine.

Beginning in 1999, BBC Radio 3 launched Shakespeare For The Millennium, an ambitious project to dramatize seventeen Shakespeare productions in four years.

The project was done in collaboration with BBC Worldwide, which emphasized it wanted to take a contemporary, innovative approach to the Bard. It launched on 12 September 1999 with a Shakespeare discussion panel, and a new production of Hamlet -- starring none other than Michael Sheen as the Dane!

On 23 September 2001, BBC Radio 3 broadcast a new production of Much Ado About Nothing as the Sunday Play, with David in the lead role as Benedick and Samantha Spiro as Beatrice. Adapted by Sally Avens, it featured an introduction (as had all the previous productions in the Shakespeare For The Millennium series) by Richard Eyre, the former Director of the Royal National Theatre.

The production also starred a few other recognizable names. There was Chiwetel Ejiofor as Claudio, Emilia Fox as Hero, David Swift as Leonato, Julian Rhind-Tutt as Don John, and David Haig as Dogberry.

All original music was composed and performed by Simon Oakes and Adam Wolters.

Much Ado About Nothing was commercially released by BBC Worldwide as part of the BBC Radio collection series in 2001.

The sleeve notes of cassettes and CDs of the production include a scene-by-scene synopsis, a full character analysis, and an essay on interpretation from the director Sally Avens.

Almost four years later, in November 2005, BBC One broadcast a television series called ShakespeaRe-Told, a set of four adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. Each play was adapted by a different writer, and all were relocated to the present day.

The first to be broadcast - on 7 November 2005 - was a modern-day version of Much Ado About Nothing starring Sarah Parrish and Damien Lewis...and Billie Piper and Nina Sosanya and Olivia Colman!

Six days after this television broadcast - on 13 November 2005 at 7:15 pm - BBC Radio 3 re-broadcast the audio version starring David and Samantha in its 'Drama On 3' slot.

Fast forward to August 2020.

The BBC released a set of four BBC Radio Shakespeare collections: Histories, Comedies, Tragedies, and Roman Plays. Much Ado About Nothing was included in the collection of Comedies, and became available as an Audible digital download.

I think they did, there are enough crumbs to give it plausible and they both spent November and December in LA and London respectively. But this is in the same time the Joe stuff was starting so who knows.

This got long, sorry. The TLDNR is:

the canon is Taylor met Joe at the Met, dated Tom, broke up and in October 2016 went to Joe's premiere and started dating him. Although Joe was not in the same country as Taylor for most of that time. In May 2017 they went public and were seen 20 times before Reputation came out in November, it was super public.

An alternate timeline is that after Hendall and Hiddleswift both ended within a month and before Joe/Taylor and Harry/Tess Ward went public within a week the haylor sightings, being in the same city, songs, gifts, blind items, edited videos and friend comments were because they were secretly dating again.

On 28 December there was an unconfirmed sighting of them together and Taylor gave Austin a record signed by friends of Harry's. He thanked them and the band commented that it was signed for 'a friends little brother' who turned out to be Taylor Swift.' Harry knew them for years and Sam Campbell commented 'LOL'

31 December - in 2020 7 photos of Taylor & Joe getting ready in her London house leaked with this date given. Why only 7? The date of the New Years Eve jumping into an icy pool story Taylor Nation edited out. If the story was about Joe why would it be edited out?

3 January 2017 - Lover journal that Taylor has been with someone for 3 months, no one has found out and she is living in London. It had been 3.1 months since the Hendall break up and 2.5 months since Joe got to NY. .....

stephanie lauter: we get the most canon info on her. solomon calls her his "october surprise", so october 2002. she sings to pete "wake me up when you turn 18" suggesting she already is an adult. apparently, homecoming is in october??? the musical's events took place in september-october (since homecoming is 2/3 weeks after max's death)??? i thought homecoming was in like winter or some shit but you have a dance in the first month of school?? and not some casual shit but one of the big ones??? why???? so because of that, i'm saying steph turned 18 on october 3rd. it's the mean girls day because i think i'm really funny. it also means that, in my mind, she turned 18 while panicking about max being dead (or possibly exactly while the musical is happening).

Out of Touch Thursday --- a video of the cast from the anime Lucky Star dancing to the song "Out of Touch" by Hall and Oates. Can be posted on any Thursday.

94 Meetings Day --- March 31st. From an episode of Parks and Rec where April doesn't think this day exists and books all of Ron's appointments then.

April Fools --- April 1st. Also a real world holiday. The most popular prank is Rickrolling.

Mishapocalypse --- April 1st. On this day, Tumblr users spam one specific photo of Misha Collins, who played Castiel on Supernatural, where he is looking at the camera wide-eyed.

Neil Banging Out the Tunes --- April 13th. Refers to a photo of a rat by a children's keyboard with the caption "Neil banging out the tunes April 13th 2006".

Homestuck Day --- April 13th. The birthday of Homestuck, a web comic. It is/was one of the most popular fandoms on Tumblr.

It's Gonna Be May --- April 30th. Comes from a GIF of Justin Timberlake singing the song "It's Gonna Be Me". In the song, he pronounces "me" like "May".

Star Wars Day --- May 4th. It comes from a pun between "May the force" and "May the Fourth".

Let Papyrus Say "Fuck" Day --- June 16th. Someone who was annoyed with mischaracterization of Papyrus from Undertale established this holiday and it caught on.

21st Night of September --- September 21st. The day referenced in the catchy disco song "September" by Earth, Wind, and Fire.

Frodo and Bilbo's Birthday --- September 22nd. The joint birthday of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins from The Lord of the Rings.

October:

Mean Girls Day --- October 3rd. This comes from the part of the movie where Cady's crush asks her what day it is.

Treat Yo'Self --- October 13th. From an episode of Parks and Rec where Tom and Donna have a day to pamper themselves.

November:

November 5th --- Multiple holidays. It's Guy Fawkes Day (a holiday in Great Britain where effigies are lit to celebrate the failure of a traitor), and some people post screencaps of the movie V for Vendetta, where it's mentioned. November 5th, 2020 specifically had three huge news items: rumors of Vladimir Putin's resignation, Destiel (a ship from Supernatural) becoming (one-sided) canon, and the controversy over counting electoral votes in the U.S. election.

Life Day --- November 17. The equivalent of Christmas in Star Wars.

December:

Christmas Adam --- December 23rd. It comes from a Tumblr post making a pun on "eve" and "Eve" (from the Bible). As the original Tumblr post describes, it "comes before Christmas Eve and is generally unsatisfying".

Almost Christmas (Means It Wasn't Christmas) --- 11:59 P.M. on December 24th. This is from Ace Attorney, a video game where you're a defense lawyer. The fact that it's not quite Christmas is a crucial piece of evidence in one of the cases.

DL-6 --- Christmas/late December. This is when one of the most famous cases from Ace Attorney (mentioned above) occurs.

Other:

Annoy Squidward Day --- either January or February 15th. This refers to an episode of Spongebob where Mr. Krabs votes for Employee of the Month; a screen cap shows Spongebob pointing to the 15th day on the calendar with a sticker of Squidward on it.

Fuck this Post and Happy Birthday [Fictional Character] --- any character's birthday. The original Tumblr post starts out with a user saying "People who celebrate fictional character birthdays are annoying, pass it on", and another retorts with "FUCK this post and happy birthday, Sonic". "Sonic" can be replaced with a character of your choice.

COVID-19 cases jump 2,000, to more than 10,000, as Ohio pushes new vaccine: Coronavirus update for Thursday, Aug. 29

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio took a large leap this week, from 8,352 last week to 10,418 this week, the state reported Thursday.

This week saw the weekly case number climb over the 10,000-mark for the first time since January. It also was the 13th straight week that the case number has increased, continuing an upward swing that began in early June.

At the same time last year, the state reported just over 7,000 cases.

The best protection against COVID-19 is the updated vaccine for the 2024-2025 season, said Ohio Department of Health director Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff said in a Thursday news conference.

The updated, one-shot vaccine, which is formulated to be effective against the variants currently in circulation, is available in some Ohio locations, he said. People also can find a vaccine shot at vaccines.gov locator.

“We expect availability to increase as we move into September,” Vanderhoff said.

At least 1,384,882 Ohioans have received the updated one-dose COVID-19 vaccine, an increase of 382 people from the prior week, the state reported. This represents 11.8% of the state’s population.

The total COVID-19 case count since early 2020 in Ohio has reached 3,807,492.

There were 252 Ohioans newly hospitalized in the last week, raising the total since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 to 153,282. Five people were admitted into the ICU, raising the total since 2020 to 15,865.

The state health department reported an additional 32 deaths from COVID-19, raising the total to 44,146. Death reporting sometimes lags by weeks.

COVID-19 tests are still free for people enrolled in Medicaid, Vanderhoff said. The federal government recently announced that it will once again provide free COVID-19 tests, starting in late September. Americans will be able to order up to four tests per household at this link.

“Tests are an important tool, not just so you can protect others, but also in determining whether you might benefit from treatment,” Vanderhoff said.

Gov. Mike DeWine, who announced he had COVID-19 on Aug. 20, Is back to his normal work schedule after treatment with an antiviral medication, Vanderhoff said.

Again, almost entirely GriddleHark. The overwhelming majority of works on ao3 under the TLT fandom tag are GriddleHark, though, so I think it's understandable that my selection is unbalanced.

Dominicus Paranormal Investigators by NinthTrash - GriddleHark, CamPal, DeuDyas (5 chapters, approx. 14k words) I would like to start you off with an excerpt from the second chapter.

I have always preferred to work in the dark. The absence of light amplifies hidden sounds- the creaks and moans and faded laughter beyond the veil. Drearburh Home feels warm and sticky. Like a steady stream of blood from a puncture wound. I am a metaphysical interpreter. A one-way ticket historian. A communicator of the dead.

I don't know about you, but the "supernatural reality TV" genre is something that has come and go in my house since childhood. There's always a new take, a new show, somebody who does it differently, somebody who takes a different approach, etc. And my mother and I loved binge-watching these together. So when I tell you I can hear the foley work and audio filters for the above excerpt, I am not pulling your leg. I could probably record myself reading it and match a Very Specific Medium's intro in an uncanny way. This is a compliment. Harrowhark is SO [redacted]-coded. ((Redacted because IYKYK, and if you don't then you'll just think I'm silly))

It's not even just the nostalgia—NinthTrash did *really* well blending the parts of the genre that make it so appealing to me (the overly dramatic nonsense that I adore) with genuine hauntings. These paranormal investigators aren't staging it! They are genuinely encountering ghosts! And yet they are every bit as silly and unbelievable as the real life versions who have never encountered a ghost in their career.

Second Category: Something Pre-Nona

To Boldly Go Into the Locked Tomb by wendiferous - GriddleHark (and Spirk) (1 chapter, approx. 1k) This is Pre-Nona by a technicality. It is not HtN compliant in the least, but instead offers a *what if* alternative ending to GtN. What if, when the Second House pair sent out that distress signal, it was picked up by Starfleet? It's short and sweet, and one I may privately muse upon for months to come. I have not seen Star Trek in long enough to feel ready to approach trying to write Spirk, but I will spend a lot of my free time thinking about what might have been in that particular crossover...

Navegesimus by zoicite - GriddleHark (4 chapters, approx. 19k) Every Nova AU is a little different, often in how the author decides to handle the plot of GtN as it is now driven by the same set of characters but in wildly different positions of power. This plot is different. Zoicite handles the power switch with grace and without mangling the characters we are already familiar with. Gideon is still very much Gideon, and Harrow is still Harrow. This is harder to do than I think some people realize, and those authors that can accomplish this in the Nova AU are gems.

Third Category: Something Post-Nona

Iris, All the Time by Ghostbitsforkicks - GriddleHark (alt. CamGriddleHark) (4+ chapters, at least 25k) Vampires AU. I will be honest with you, this is mostly porn. Which works out because I am very much horny for vampires. BUT this is also a very solid representation of Harrow's and Gideon's base personalities if their childhoods were different. They are recognizable, which is hard to do when so much of what their original form relies on is remolded.

Our College Days by ConstellationCataloguer - GriddleHark endgame?, various other ships (6+ chapters, at least 46k) If you know me, you know my other current love is Baldur's Gate III. So when I saw this crossover, you know I had to give it a shot. Right off the bat, I knew it was going on the list for this month. Because it does rely a little more on having background knowledge of BG3 characters, it might be a little less accessible to the broader audience. But I'm hoping to find those fellow true souls out there with just the right overlap in interests, because let me tell you: this one is worth reading. Bonus points if you are/were also a Theater Kid ^TM.

Perhaps, This is Hell by SwordLesb1an - GriddleHark (projected 7 chapters, 2 at time of posting this, at least 3.8k) I don't know anything about Signalis, but I can tell you this one has my heart in a chokehold. The horror of it has me clutching my shirt on the edge of my seat while I wait to see if she's okay, to see if she'll make it through.
