Haven was thrown from their hut in Vietnam and miraculously survived, but was left an orphan and a double below-knee amputee. CIRCULAR FASHION EVENT/: Some more photos to thank the beautiful volunteers and staff at Vinnies in Wembley for hosting yesterday’s @mlcclaremont mother and daughter event. It was great to hear from St Vincent de Paul regional manager Sue ( hear her on my previous post) and from @sue_pember @100womenaus who also spoke on empowering women in our community. We shopped and I styled Mothers and Daughters who all left with happy finds!! Ruth Medufia on breaking stereotypes: "I was learning purposely to change the mindset of young ladies who think metal fabrication is only for men - we can do what men do." Via @bbc100women _ When Ruth Dzigbordi Medufia told her father she wanted to become a welder, he refused and said it was "men's work". But she joined a training project and learnt the trade 🔨 In #Ghana 🇬🇭 less than 3% of employees in the construction industry are women. _ When Ruth was training she was the only woman at her workshop. "If you assert yourself and set your boundaries as a woman, you can show your male colleagues that you are eager just like them to learn,” she told #100Women. “It is then when you can collaborate and work together in the industry.” In September, Ruth set up her own shop. She wants her story to be an inspiration to others and hopes she can train women to also take up welding. "I was learning purposely to change the mindset of young ladies who think metal fabrication is only for men - we can do what men do." 🙌 __ In the second picture 👉 Ruth is building a rake. She says, “You need to set it, know the correct measurements and tack it before you can weld. My master is watching me here and with my work, he is extremely positive. I work with four men at my placement, meaning I am the only female at our workshop. But it is not a problem for me - I get on well with my colleagues and mingle well.” 📸 Ruth took these images as part of the Youth Forward programme which supports young people in #Ghana 🇬🇭 and #Uganda 🇺🇬 to get jobs and grow their businesses.
