In the morning after, as I write the blogpost for last night’s meditation, I am convinced that I am in the process of stepping into the 7th level of Sage Patanjali’s 8 limbed Raja Yoga.

Of course, mastering level 6 of Dharana won’t come overnight. The whole of last night’s meditation had the much desired uninterrupted quality about it. ‘Uninterrupted’ is a word that defines level 7 of Dhyana on Dhyana’s Wikipedia page.

In most of yesterday’s meditation, my attention was turned to the centre of my head. That’s because my sense of hearing was interiorised just enough to hear sounds of life energy passing through the blood vessels in the centre of my head.

The sound itself was as usual, coming in percussion like broken sets. Yet, the sets of sound kept coming and my attention never really left the centre of my head. The phenomenon of hearing sounds from inside my head began in June of 2023. Beginning of 2024, I was sure that the phenomenon is about to disappear. Yet, here we are in the end of 2024 with the blessed phenomenon.

For the sound related phenomenon to come and go is likely the distinguishing mark of Dharana. Dharana is level 6 of Patanjali’s 8 limbed Raja Yoga. It is about focus, a gentle sort of focus. Instead of the attention turning to any and all mind generated imagery, the attention is trained to be inside the head. The stream of life energy withdrawing from the senses is the giver of such training to the attention.

I am going to take a moment and think about the journey so far. I tried for years to make meditation a daily habit. It took me another few years of meditating daily to develop enough calmness to be introduced to my subconscious mind. It took several years to muscle up against the subconscious mind to finally outgrow the urge to sleep. At this point, I had already been with the idea of meditation for 2 decades.

From the first spinal vibration caused by life energy back in March of 2020, it has taken me 4 plus years of meditation, sound related phenomenon for 17 months (in the 4 years) and energy as inner peace for 2 years for me to find the beginnings of uninterrupted meditations!

All I have ever done in 24 years of meditations is bring my attention back to the meditation on hand. The interrupting distractions changed with every layer and sub layer that I journeyed through. Without the sound related phenomenon, I wouldn’t be able to outgrow mind’s natural and limitless capacity to generate imagery. To have the sound related phenomenon in an uninterrupted manner, is a meditational advance that money can’t buy.

Asserted a boundary at work without too much flinching, good for me. Protected my time for Jan a bit more too, might need to reread into that to be more sure. I would rather skew lower than higher. H helped me recover my video game which was good of him. And I made really good pad thai tonight which was lovely, will want to make that again for just me. Hoping to sleep okay tonight, so lovely not to have any morning early alarms - 10am only. I can sleep in, go to gym, then do some paperwork. Given myself a 3 hour slot for some boring stuff at minimum. I think for the gym I might just hit the treadmill and keep it simple.
