Strings of their hearts💕 FULL chapter 1

You bursted from your dream, flying up to sit up in your bed. Cold sweat practically dripping from your face. It was that dream again.. you couldn't stand that dream, the uncanny silence always followed by you falling to the ground and wondering what was happening, or what happened really. You never fully understood why you started having that reoccurring dream, you never did anything in the waking world to even cause the dream. You didn't watch horror movies alot, and you haven't been to a forest since you were a pre-teen. Even then, your memories about that summer were blurry and you couldn't remember what happened.

Looking to your nightstand you read your clock "5:00 AM" You sighed, 'time to get up' . You and your friend group had an entire weekend planned out, you all had been planning this for a few weeks, you all would take 3 of your vacation days off of work and go do fun stuff. Fun stuff as in go out on the town for 2 days and regret it all on the third and go back to work on the 4th, today you all were gonna go shopping, you all had very decent jobs so it wasn't very hard to save up alot of spending money.

So not wanting to be late you got up and trudged to your bathroom, flicking the light on you slightly jolted at your appearance 'damn I look like shit man..' you sighed, your hair an absolute mess and your shirt had a wet spot of drool on the collar. Getting ready was the easiest part of most of your days, as you usually knew exactly what was going to happen in the day, so you knew how to dress. But as this days only objective was to "go shopping" it was to vague to know exactly how to dress, but going casual should be good enough. Getting in and out of the shower was a simple task other than the undying fear that you'll slip and break your neck.

You dried your hair with a towel, you wouldn't brush it till you went downstairs. Throwing on your grey button up and torn jeans you shut the lights off and headed downstairs to do your hair and eat breakfast "alexa play don't worry be happy" you stated nonchalantly, it was your favorite song to play in the mornings to calm the nerves.

Humming along to the song, you shuffled to the kitchen in your socks. 'Hmm cereal or eggs...cereal...or....nah cereals easier' you moved over to the cabinets, opening them and pulling out the generic unhealthy colorful marshmallow cereal. You only had a few dishes in your kitchen as you lived alone, unlike your friends who had spouses and kids already. You preferred to live alone, it was more peaceful this way, you had less to worry about. Though you didn't hate the idea of a family, you just didn't really have time to go on dates, you hadn't even had a vacation since you first got your new job. Shaking your head you brought your thoughts back to the task at hand : 'find a bowl and spoon and eat already dude!'

As soon as you got your bowl of cereal ready you moved to your large living room, with black leather couches and dark rugs that complemented the rest of your homes dark pallette. You turned your large mounted TV on and immediately changed it to cartoons, not really wanting to bother watching the News, you already knew the world was going to shit you didn't need another reminder while you where trying to eat your color bombed cereal.

You sighed in content when you settled on spongebob, the joyful sponge making you forget about it all. You finished eating and reached to your brush that was laying on the couch from the previous day of you being to tired to put it up, sighing you brush through all the tangles of your messy hair and half styling it, as in you just brushed your bangs out of your eyes and called it a day.

You pulled your phone from your jeans right pocket, seeing it was already "7:45 AM" you smiled, it was time to go pick up some of your friends!

You got in your car, it was the biggest out of your friends, the most seats and room. So it was the favorite of the group, in total your friend group would be riding in two cars, to make it easier to go from place to place. In your car, you had : Mark, Jamie, Clara, Anita, and Fry. You were close friends with Clara, Anita, and Fry, Mark and Jamie being mutual friends you met through the group. Your friend Claire was driving the second car, in their car they had: Gary, Moose, and Wendy.

You and Wendy used to date, you remember. But you both knew it would've never worked out, neither of you could imagine a future with eachother, but you two were still very good friends. You were the ring carrier at her wedding, she had a very kind wife, always smiling and always caring for others.

Smiling you drove the half hour to pick your first friends up, Mark and Fry. They lived next to eachother, everyone in the group knew they had it bad for eachother but themselves, you shook your head, they were so oblivious to eachother. You tried turning your radio on, but to your dismay, all that played was static. You tried connecting it to the Bluetooth but that wouldn't work either 'Huh...weird, might have to take it to the shop already.' You slightly grumbled, you really didn't want to take it to the shop. You had just gotten this car barely a year back, it was only a few years old itself, it really shouldn't be having problems yet.

It was 8:20, you were daydreaming and drumming on the steerwheel to a made up tune in your head, waiting for your friends to come out already. Smiling as soon as you saw you blonde haired friend Mark, he was always worried about being late to things, he was generally anxious alot either way, but being late was like life or death for him. "Hey buddy! Ready for the day?" He said with his raspy voice, he was the eldest of the group and used to be a singer until his last show that ended in an accident that costed him his voice. It took him years to be able to talk again, the entirety of those years you and your friends worried for him so badly. He fell into a deep state of depression, his deepest passion was gone forever, and he could do nothing about it.

"Course I am bud, how about you? You ready to tell Fry how much you love him?" You smirked, looking at the rear view mirror to look at him. He burst into a fit of embarrassment "Don't say that! He could be here any minute!!" He whisper yelled at you, looking around like Fry would appear out of thin air at any moment. "Fine fine..you gotta tell him at some point Mark." You said, smiling at him after finally turning your head to fully look at him "he's on his way out right now, he just texted me" He nodded, scooting to the seat behind the driver's.

You two only had to wait a minute before Fry was clumsily running out the door, struggling to pull on his coat and walking at the same time. His long red hair falling all over the place, coffee in hand, he really looked like a disaster waiting to happen today. He scooted into the middle back seat next to Mark, already red and embarrassed for how foolish he must've looked.

As soon as they both buckled in, you pulled out immediately. You had to pick up Jamie, Clara, and Anita next, which is absolutely god sent because they were siblings and still lived in the same house.

Arriving at the mall wasn't the easiest thing in the world, no matter how simple it seemed, you and your friends argued for half an hour over which mall to go to and whether to stop for food first or not. In the end, you got some quick fast food and ate on the way to the south mall center and waited in the car till both parties were done eating.

You were already tired, you could feel a headache starting to pull at your head and you wanted to be done and go home already. Your entire body was tired and you couldn't understand why you were so exhausted already, at this point if they just left you in the car to sleep you'd be fine with it.

The triplets were sitting in the back row of seats in your car, all rough housing and making the car shake, fighting over food. You shook your head, you would've said it was to early for this already but it really wasn't with how long they took to pick up. "YOOO WHAT ARE YOU TEXTING YOUR BOYFRIEND???? THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE?" Jamie practically screamed, they really had no sense of an inside voice, and it didn't change that you all were in a car. "NO DUDE SHUT THE FUCK UP YOUR HURTING MY EARS" Clara shoved Jamies face away from her phone, she was always on it, it was like her prop that was glued to her hand. "Was that a rat in the parking lot just now?? Oh nah you aren't getting me out of this car now." Anita, the quietest of the trio, but also the most clean freak of the entire group. She was a neutral hard to hate person, because she was just calm, unless you were dirty then may God have mercy on you.

"Guys, we were supposed to be in the store YESTERDAY. Jesus fuckin' christ man" you passive aggressively told them

You had already been to countless stores, its been hours and if you were exhausted before? Your starting to lay down in the grave now. And the worst part was that they hadn't let you go to a single store you liked yet, and you knew for a fact that you, Fry, Jamie and Moose, wanted to go to the same type of store.

Finally...FINALLY, one of the three spoke up and said they were going to one of the game stores. And just as you guessed it, not only yourself tagged along, the other two did as well. As you and your group walked to the exit, where the game store was at, you all decided it was gonna be the last store you visit for the day as it was already getting dark and the store was closing already.

As you guys all separated inside the large gaming store, filled with anything and everything possibly related to game stuff, from game boards to games to decoration. You knew it would be the shortest trip in the entire store as everything was overly priced and the majority of everyone has spent the most of their money for the day.

Sighing you looked through the games, new, old, demos, it was crazy! They had everything in here. Choosing a few random titles that looked fun and interesting you were nearing the end of the aisle, all the digital games being located in the back corner of the store, it was creepy and poorly lit strangely but to you it was magical. The closer you got to the end of the aisle the more uneasy you felt, the more dirty the floor got and dusty the shelves became. It felt like you were being watched despite no one being near where you were, so finally just speedwalking to the end instead of taking your time and becoming more creeped out.

Then. Something caught your eye, shiny, very shiny. Somehow shining through the cobwebs and dust thats built up over clearly a very very long time, you used one of the cases to wipe it off and looked at it... 'weird...I didn't know they sold dating sims..they really do sell everything I guess' you hummed while looking it over. The characters looked silly and colorful, though it was clearly worn as the colors were fading, the title in jumbled colorful letters spelling "Strings of their hearts" with little glittery hearts surrounding it, those must've been the things that caught your eye. To say you were intrigued would be a bit of an understatement, you slipped it between your other cases of games, not wanting to be teased for getting it.

Dropping your friends off was the most relieving part of your day, as you dropped the triplets off it felt like a pressure had been taken off of your head.

Driving to Mark and Frys residence was the second to last thing left to do today, you looked in your rear view mirror to watch as they both smiled and giggled while talking to eachother, you smiled, they were so happy together and the day they finally tell eachother about their feelings they will be even happier. It is almost a toothrotting sweet thought, you slowed your car into a stop at the curb near their home, you let a breath of relief out as their neighborhood was hard to locate in the dark, even with your headlights on.

It was 10:55 and you still had time to pick fast food up on the way home, you waved to your to friends and your smile widened as you saw they were holding hands as they walked eachother home.

Okay nevermind, the trip to your local Wendy's was already proving to be even more stressful than your mall trip, the lady in front of you yelling at the cashier over a coupon that had been expired for atleast a year. You decided to just walk out and go through the drive thru instead, it was quiet and more peaceful, though the line was long and you were fourth in line you decided to make yourself less bored by trying to see if your radio was still broken, turning it on and turning to a random station that would play at late hours you waited..all that came out was static but you felt like you should wait longer, and then you heard it

... A garbled sound of someone trying to talk through multiple different voices and sounds, you immediately got freaked out and shut it off, 'if Satan wants to take my soul he can do it later when I'm not in a Wendy's drive thru..talk about embarrassing'

After getting your food and it already being 11:40 you were semi-speeding home, you already didn't like being out this late no matter how much it looked so beautiful. You would keep remembering your dream, as the moon hung overhead, and it didn't help that your neighborhood with very large gaps between houses was filled with trees, it was like a forest. You hated it. It made you feel sick and like you didn't belong there.

Stepping on the gas and slowing down as soon as you got home, you grabbed your paper bag of food and plastic bag filled with games and stuffed animals among other things and raced into your home, not bothering to lock the car until you locked your own houses door. If anyone..anything..was out there it couldn't get you in the safety of your home..right? You didn't spend an arm an a leg getting the best security system in the country for nothing.

You ate your food on the couch while watching more cartoons, but something wouldn't stop biting at your brain. That game, it was dusty, old, and was extremely underpriced, so much so that the employees were slightly agitated on how little you spent at their store. You looked at the bag, and jolted as the case was slightly falling out of the bag, 'weird..I thought it was buried in there??' You were slightly unnerved, but having nothing to do, and not being tired enough to sleep, combined with having finished you food..

You turned the TV off, taking the case and the bag upstairs to your room, throwing the bag to the bed as soon as you entered into your room, locking your door you turned to your PC. You didn't know if it was a download code game or a disk, but it did say it was a PC game, so putting the case on the desk and sitting down while your monitor and pc booted up, you read the back.

"Wow! Thank you so much for getting the game! Your just the most aren't you?

Well, welcome to the neighborhood neighbor! Its so nice to have a new face around here, and a very good looking one at that! And say..I think a few of your new neighbors think that too! Find out who likes you and what happens! You have two months to get a date! Have fun!" With a crayon designed smiley face under it. Though it was weird that they knew you bought the game, maybe it was just an oversight? You turned the case back around, looking at the characters again. They were colorful and some of them were attractive to you but then again you were attracted to the weirdest things, but one of them stood out to you, the yellow skinned puppet with blue styled up hair. He looked like your opposite, calm, charming, he actually had his hair styled unlike you...you started laughing at yourself, of course you would degrade yourself and compare yourself to a Muppet lookalike, it was a very you thing to do.

Shaking your head you opened the case, unlike the outside the inside was black. That was extremely weird for a game case, like..really really weird but you shook it off and popped the disc into the slot on your PC.

The game immediately started booting up, and very catchy music that your positive would be stuck in your head started to play, the screen fading from white to a colorful scene of all the characters on a picnic blanket looking at you, as if inviting you to sit down and join them. So joyful, you already loved it, it seemed you were gonna become obsessed with yet another game again

And this...was going to be a long night.

HOOO BOY THAT TOOK ME AN ENTIRE TO DAY TO WRITE OUT. I'm EXTREMELY sorry that its kinda short, as I've said before I'm very sucky at writing, BUT I'm determined to see this out through the end. My thoughts tend to drift alot and overdetail pointless things like the side characters though they won't really contribute to the story much

SO IM SORRY 😭😭

Im working on the date outfits as I write this, and they are literally turning out better than my writing itself, so you guys will probably enjoy those more than the fic. As I'm going to be making short comics to go with these!

Why all the love for lights camera pants? Why not the other 3d spongebob Games like employee of the month or the movie game?

1. Already cataloged employee of the month and the other point and click spongebob games.

2. Lights camera pants each variety has a lot of content which means even more screenshots. Especially the pc version (not even done with cataloging it due to below reason haha). Including a lot more dialog and set pieces for spongebob to explore in. It's less linear pc point and click like the other ones :0!

3. Admittedly haven't had a lot of time to catalogue anything lately sides stuff already in my queue due to being busy with college. Hoping when I get the time to finish screenshotting for lights camera pants and moving to another game.

ok my mom broke me out of my Pressure trance so we could watch the new spongebob movie on netflix (I've loved spongebob since i was little and my mom will watch it with me on occasion) but like....it hurts me to see another spongebob movie? Mainly because i know I'm going to be disappointed by the quality and shit plot line and shitty jokes that don't even make you laugh...and it's not even the fact that I've "matured" past those jokes,no,I can still watch seasons 1,2,3 up to five (even if 1-3 is and will always be the best) and laugh at 90% of the jokes or atleast chuckle...like I know this sounds so stupid since I'm a teen and "spongebob is childish" but it WAS good and it's just kinda shit now...btw I'm only mentioning this since I post abt things i enjoy and stuff but like honestly I love ocean related things and that junk so that's why I have such a passion for spongebob (and pressure I love things deep sea related) like it makes me so sad to see something I loved so much turn into mush,makes me wanna cry ngl since spongebob is such a comfort show to me and didnt like Stephen hillenburg not want several movies and spin offs of the show? Idk sry about the long rant it's just modern spongebob makes me sad :,(

1: what made you name Jake’s hero name skybird?

2: how come Chris superhero name is Nightwing phantom instead of something else like super wing or maybe dark wing? Feels like a mouthful to me lol

3: what’s the most embarrassing thing that has happened to them? Either together or separate.

4: what horror movies have they tried to watch?

5: just like the supersons in canon (and maybe in some ppls fanons) have they ever do some slight teasing with each other? For example: calling each other dork, nerd, buttmunch, hit like a girl, etc…

6: what’s one cartoon/movie that they watch religiously? My headcanon for Chris that it’s SpongeBob.

Well my friend @gothicghost2000 , do I have some answers alright lol

1. Well what happened was that originally I gave Jake the code name of Bluebird since his main outfit was the Discowing colors on a Robin like suit. Only thing was, after some research, I rediscovered the character of Harper Row who went by Bluebird. Hence why I went with Skybird since I felt like it was different enough moniker name from Bluebird.

2. Well the idea was essentially to split the Nightwing mantle between Chris and Dick akin to how back at the marvelous competition, the X Men and Avengers gave a tendency for different teams that operate under a similar banner to bear a subtitle in order to help distinguish them. For example, the mainline X team can be X Men Gold while either a team of newly graduated members or even a time displaced version of the original team can be X Men Blue. Or there’s the main Avengers helmed by Captain America, Iron Man and Thor while another team lead by Hawkeye at San Francisco can be the aptly named West Coast Avengers.

So when differentiating Dick and Chris with the Nightwing mantle, since the former is more well known of the two (it’s a sad fact but true), I had to give Chris a way to let audiences know he too is a Nightwing albeit of a different sort than the one they’re most used to. I would’ve tried with a color based coding for them but I don’t know if Nightwing Orange would be as appealing sounding of a name since unlike Gold or Blue, it doesn’t sound a truly stand out color. So then I applied the fact Chris was born in the Phantom Zone and that his more distinctive powers are shadow based to the name process, hence Nightwing Phantom. Plus calling him simply Phantom by itself would be ripping off a golden age hero called the Phantom. So yeah…lol

3. For Chris, it would be the time Conner washed the laundry but he accidentally shrink Chris’ clothes so much but that morning he had to rush for school. The only thing that’ll fit him in the meantime was Lois’ wedding dress. You can imagine how red his face was when walking into class in said dress.

Meanwhile, there that one time Jake attempted singing a traditional Tamaranean folk song for a talent show. His louder wailing voice combined with the speakers needless to say certainly got not just tons of broken windows but a ribbon for sixth place

4. Mainly they stick to classic Universal Mosnters and if they feel especially brave, J-Horror movies starring Onryo, especially the Ringu and Grudge films. Though the first Ttime they tried watching Ringu, they were very very nervous around unlabeled video tapes

5. Chris and Jake probably do so especially at an earlier time when their little team was still barely coming together but far more lighthearted and less harsh in comparison to that other team. It’s more common for them to call each other teasing names during video game play throughs than out in their superhero jobs

6. For Jake, it’ll be both Powerpuff Girls Classic and of course Voltron Legendary Defender. For the latter case though, he completely ignores all the shipping that goes on in the fandom and just focuses on the show itself

Now as for the both of them being of them, two shows stand out being their go to ones: Avatar: The Last Airbender and Steven Universe

I’m ashamed to admit that so far I’m not interested in the Barbie movie too much. Tell me why I’m stupid for this.

I don’t know how to answer this because I have had a Barbie fixation for my entire life and I played with my Barbies secretly until I was like 15 so I’m predisposed to be insane about it.

But I can try lol. It’s just so fun and camp, and PINK, and indulgently feminine in a way that like embraces femininity and celebrates it. Barbie has her roots as a fashion doll, and I think that watching her evolution through the decades is fascinating, until she becomes the Barbie we know and love today: The Barbie that is Everything!! (Highly recommend watching Trixie Mattel’s the history of Barbie).

Now I want to address Ken because this movie gets it. I had dozens of Barbies, some were my moms, some my older sister’s and some mine, it was collection of dolls and clothes amassed over literal decades. I had one (1) Ken doll. He came with a single outfit, a tux. I was not interested in another Ken doll, or Ken clothes (I had a pair of SpongeBob Barbie shorts that fit him perfectly for more casual occasions). Ken was an accessory for Barbie’s everything. He was the subplot of the subplot. And I think they’ve just nailed that.

The Barbie dream house with the dry water slide and the big plastic bubbles in the hot tub and the pink car and the 500 Barbies that are all best friends and have the best day ever every day. It’s just like a blast of bright pink nostalgia.

Nick Mag Highlights - #124 September 2006

Happy Mother’s Day everyone, and welcome back to another edition of Nick Mag Highlights! Today, we'll be checking out Issue #124, and its behind-the-scenes look at Barnyard. If you're looking for all the information you could want on the #1 animated movie of 2006, I'm afraid you're out of luck, because Cars is not mentioned anywhere in this issue.

(For the record, I’d watch Barnyard over Cars any day. Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is better than both of them, though.)

Excuse the lack of pretense, but I’m ready to just dive right into this one! I think whatever I’ve got to say about the movie Barnyard is best left for when we get to the actual section about it. Most I can say for now is I certainly have more experience with its sequel series, Back at the Barnyard, which I remember Nicktoons had a downright obsession with playing at all hours of the day. Guess it was popular!

If the war on drugs is ever revitalized and you are ever in charge of marketing material similar to this, I recommend keeping any fill-in-the blanks on your ads to a minimum. I’m certain that this box was met with more phallic doodles and Cool S’s than it was heartfelt proclamations against drugs. But since I’m a little more mature than that, I’ll play along.

There. I don’t drink because I know if the Aaahh!!! Real Monsters characters were real they’d be disappointed in me for it. Krumm told me that in a dream once.

Man, big things were happening in the world of Nickelodeon this year! Avatar: The Last Airbender was still riding high, Barnyard and Nacho Libre were in theaters, and we saw the premiere of Mr. Meaty (plus The Jimmy-Timmy Power Hour 2 and 3, but those aren’t in this issue)! All equally powerful stuff, and no, that’s not up for debate.

Feel free to also note the fanmail, featuring all of the grave errors Nickelodeon Magazine got caught perpetuating in their previous issues, just like every other issue’s fanmail. Yep, nothing gets by these kids! I appreciate the crew was always willing to own up to their mistakes, but did they never get, y’know, drawings in the mail instead? Something like that? Younger me would’ve preferred those instead of reminding me the team behind Nickelodeon Magazine was only human, susceptible to making errors like anyone else. These guys made SpongeBob*! How could they ever be wrong!?

*Incorrect.

A nice surprise to see Yin Yang Yo!. I remember being obsessed with this show for a short time back when it was new on Toon Disney. Couldn’t tell you why since I don’t remember a lick of it now. I’m only mentioning it because of that little leaflet you might have noticed that’s very obviously obscuring the page…

Yeah! Turns out there’s a whole 6 page comic in here, just for this ad. That’s genuinely a really cool idea, and I can’t imagine it was cheap to print something like this. Still doesn’t exactly remind me why I like the show, per se (this writing is not for me), but I can respect some cool marketing when I see it.

Pretty star-studded Celeb Page this time around, I actually recognize everyone here! And the rather delicately generic questions being asked have just reminded me that this is a back-to-school issue. It was September after all, so I guess the “print” theme is a little more appropriate than I thought.

If summer vacation is still relevant to the life of anyone reading this, do take a second to appreciate that the season has only just begun. Because, truly, there is no greater feeling I know than experiencing the advent of a breathtakingly liberating summer vacatio- hey! Bruce Willis is wearing an Over The Hedge hat in that picture! Cool!

Confusing little bit of cross-promotion here, if only due to the fact this Avatar: The Last Airbender-themed ad doesn’t actually use any Avatar terminology, or mention anything from the show really. Not willing to catch flying french fries with your mouth? Then sorry, you’re definitely a fire… kind of… guy. Legally we cannot call you a bender.

Other notable points about this Burger King ad: - Isn’t the name “The Extinguisher” way more fitting for a water-user than a fire-user? I think they may have mixed up the arrows there. - For some reason this 2006 ad is using a pristine hand puppet of their King mascot from the 1970’s. - Doesn’t have any picture of the advertised toys. Wonder if they were any good.

Bet you’ve never seen a full-page ad for one flash game before, huh? And neither have I, I think! I’m pretty sure this was still while Nickelodeon was trying to sell games through their “Nick Cash” system, where you could purchase computer games and digital items (for games like Neopets, when Viacom still owned it) via their online storefront Nick Arcade (not to be confused with the ‘90s game show of the same name). So yeah, if they were planning on making sales off of this, I guess I understand the big-time marketing.

I really like that you’re supposed to clip out the three tips they give you. Do the editors really think it’s that cumbersome to open up a magazine when you want to read something?

Awesome two-page spread of art from James “Jimmy” Yamasaki, who’s done tons of great freelance art for a wide variety of different magazines. If you want to take a look, he’s posted lots of his work on his Instagram.

Even if the activity is a little shallow, it’s nice to see something here that’s giving books a shoutout. With all the aggressive marketing these issues had for all the latest movies and TV shows, it’s still good to remind kids that literature is worth your time too.

Am I reading a little too deep into this? Maybe, but I think that means the activity is working.

Hey, this is pretty cool! And fairly educational at that. I could see this genuinely being useful for any kid looking to make their own comics, and font choice is a pretty important aspect you may not think about at first, especially when you’re younger. A fair bit of kids probably skipped this section, but hopefully it was helpful for someone.

For some reason, Disney’s best idea for advertising their upcoming DVD releases was door hangers. I distinctly remember there being Lilo & Stitch 2 and Tarzan II-themed ads with the same gimmick, and I don’t get it. I guess it’s a way to increase the ad’s lifespan? Kids get to cut it out, and keep it hanging on their door knob for a couple days before their parents throw it away, so I guess everyone wins right? Well sorry Disney, my childhood bedroom didn’t even have a door knob. And guess who didn’t watch Brother Bear 2 either?

Another issue, another Comic Book. This time with an awesomely done cover by artist Souther Salazar (they’ve got tons of other colorful and creative work on their official website). Nice to see Impy make the front page in the top left there, too.

Alright before we get into it, I quickly want to talk about this. Did you know that some of the style guides (official documents that outline how a design should be represented) for different pieces of SpongeBob merchandise are available on the Internet Archive?

I’ll give an example: see that yellow shirt on the top right, with the punk-looking SpongeBob and electric guitars? That shirt was just one part of a series of punk-themed SpongeBob SquarePants merch, and the people designing that series had to refer back to this style guide to make sure everything in the series looked consistent. It’s really cool because those guides often include all of the official illustrations that were used in the merchandise in high quality, alongside stuff like official logos and fonts.

I could totally be alone in finding these so interesting, but hey, if you’re a fan of these characters, they might be nice to hold onto.

I may not have been much of an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan growing up, but I’ll be the first one to admit it’s one of Nickelodeon’s best-looking and well-animated shows. Seriously, some of those action scenes in particular were near movie-quality.

This comic definitely keeps up the trend of great visuals, which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the team behind it. Pencils and inks were done by Joaquim Dos Santos, who did storyboards and directing duties for seasons two and three of the show, and is currently co-directing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and its sequel(!). Similarly, the colors were done by a long-time crewmember of the show, Hye-Jung Kim. Great stuff all around.

Well, this is unexpected! I know the Moomin series is popular with a lot of people, so it’s really cool to see it featured in the magazine here. I’m not really familiar myself, but I might have to check out more! This is as pleasant as it is funny.

Now, I don’t usually bring up the “Gag Station” pages in these retrospectives. It’s not on purpose, I just haven’t usually got much to say, but this time I actually wanted to point out the… oh… uh, what is that down there, is that another…?

Oh, it’s another one of these pull-out mini comics, like the YinYangYo! thing from earlier. Except this time with, y’know, Walmart mascots. Yeah, it’s a little less impressive when it’s done a second time, and with Walmart mascots I’ve never heard of before, and when it’s mostly just made up of pictures of clothes.

Anyway, what was I saying? Oh yeah.

The guy who made this, Johnny Ryan, went on to co-create Pig Goat Banana Cricket for Nickelodeon in 2015. Do with that what you will.

Here’s an odd piece of early 2000’s trivia: the ESRB had ads for itself! And not just in print either, but full on TV commercials. Those black-and-white letters were no longer content to sit idly by on the bottom left corners of the game cases; they were ready to make themselves known. In regards to print ads, there’s way more than just this one, and they all had their own characters and stories informing you why content ratings are just the bee’s knees. What I find most interesting about them is that they were made in collaboration with the artists behind Penny Arcade, a video game-themed webcomic that’s been running since 1998. Apparently in 2018, the ESRB and the Penny Arcade team worked together again to update the ads, but I’ve never seen one of these new ones in the wild. Hopefully we can get these revitalized before the next Mortal Kombat game. Don't want to risk another fiasco.

I think this section on unique books is pretty cool, I only wish the magazine team felt the same! Seriously, are we filling the story’s extra space with ads, or the other way around?

But yeah, pretty cool seeing both the smallest and largest books on Earth, even if those titles have probably been usurped by now. I was also quite curious about Shelley Jackson’s “Skin” project mentioned in the bottom right, and if you're just as curious, it was indeed finished in 2011 with a video featuring the full story and all its participants here.

Oh, and if you get a chance, that Voynich Manuscript thing they mention is available on Yale’s website. Those historians dudes are still looking for someone to make heads or tails of that thing. I think they might just be lazy, if you ask me.

Yep, I still love these calendars. I have to ask though, what’s so “pear” about September? I thought August was the start of pear season.

Also, wow, there’s a whole Wizard of Oz-themed festival in Chesterton, Indiana? I wonder what that’s like…

Only took us the whole issue, but we’re finally here at Barnyard! Or, what I’m just now realizing it should have been called, Funny Farm. Interestingly, the film had already been out for a month by the time they did this promotion, but maybe Kevin James was sick last month, I dunno. They’re really stretching for the questions here too, I mean c’mon, who cares if Kevin James likes the sounds of cowbells? I want to hear more about his… udder?

Good lord, they showed this to children…

Anyway, I personally didn’t see the movie when it came out, but like I said, they played Back at the Barnyard damn near constantly. I thought that show must’ve had a million episodes with how often Nickelodeon showed it off.

I did eventually get around to watching the film, and I’m at least glad to know I wasn’t missing out on much. It’s not a particularly good film, and while it may have come from many of the same people that brought us Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (including having the same creator, Steve Oedekerk), Barnyard lacks much of the imagination and charm that made that film so compelling. I wanted all of Jimmy’s inventions as a kid, but I can’t say I ever wanted to be a cow.

Honestly, the most value Barnyard holds for me now is that it comes from that era of 3D animation I hold a fair bit of nostalgia for, where it was competent, but still ugly. Right next to films like Jimmy Neutron and Ice Age.

Lego Star Wars II! Clear off your calendars everyone, because I guarantee there’s nothing more important going on the day this game releases in the US. Nope, nothing. C’mon, you can make a sexy slave Yoda!

Well that sure was a Mother’s Day Edition of Nick Mag Highlights, was it not? Maybe I’ll think of a way to connect the holiday and Barnyard while I’m writing this outro*.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge On The Run is a Huge Lazy Mess...Which is why somebody else had to fix it because no one else did it before Me. I wanted to do my own personal little re-written take on the Third Movie of what could've been handled if it was written better like the First Two Movies, that is if it didn't started the Spin-offs that No one ever asked for. But I'm still one of these people who have mixed feelings on the Third Movie and its Spin-Offs, this movie isn't really the best but at least it's still holds up as a tribute to Stephen Hillenburg. Anyway, here's a New Plot for my own take on Sponge On The Run. The Concept of this Plot is basically the same; SpongeBob and Patrick go on an Adventure, Sage is their Male Mindy, Poseidon from Greek Mythology is the Main Antagonist, however, I made some slight changes. 1. This does not including the Flashbacks of Kamp Koral, the Retconned Past is not included since I scrapped out the Kamp Koral idea. 2. The plot of this version mainly focuses on the Boundaries between SpongeBob and his Entire Friends similar to how The First Movie focuses on the Boundary of SpongeBob and the Krusty Krab (to learn on how to be yourself as a Grown-Up) and how the Second Movie focuses on the Boundary between SpongeBob and Plankton, here, this does not just focus on the Boundary between SpongeBob and Gary but to Him and all of his own Main Friends. Instead of having a similar exact plot to "Have You Seen This Snail?" 3. Since it's meant to be an AU version of the Third Movie, in my AU of SpongeBob, the Modern Seasons take place after the events of the First Movie since Mindy had a cameo in SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout (which leads me into thinking that the Show somehow actually takes place after the events of the First Movie despite that the First Movie is meant to be a Series Finale/End to the Show). NEW PLOT! In this re-telling of Mine, SpongeBob heads to work while Plankton is still plotting for revenge for the Krabby Patty secret formula just like in the Movie, only then, Sandy builds Otto as a New Employee to the Krusty Krab to wash dishes instead of having an assistant for Mr. Krabs. After work, SpongeBob and Squidward head back home as Squidward carries SpongeBob all the way home as Patrick was waiting for his Best Friend then the two hung out for the Night. SpongeBob is incredibly bored because he often wonders on what is more outside around of the Bikini Bottom that He and his Friends never traveled to before and begins to wonder if there ever more Different Kinds of Sea Creatures out there that possibly never been found or at least ones who have been forgotten. Meanwhile, like in the movie, we are introduced to Another Sea King, Poseidon (The Greek Counterpart of King Neptune). And this point in my version, he isn't too obsessed for himself but rather more vain and selfish with Pride as he is as he enjoys taking care of the Kingdom like a Snobby King but treating his own servants like garbage. Poseidon is very often bored since he's very tired of Neptune getting all the attention his Roman Counterpart deserves so he decides to set up a New Kingdom for a New Palace and he somehow plans to overthrown King Neptune. Meanwhile, at the Palace of King Neptune, he was often busy doing his own Royal Dueties as King while still living with his own Wife and their Children (1 Son and 2 Daughters), he had sent his own Other Child left to a Royal Summer School for Princesses where they had to learn on how to be Future Queens (which is his Daughter, Mindy who was sent there by her own Parents). Although while Mindy was at a Princess School, she was learning very well on her studies for future royalty (alongside with the Other Princess Students) but she couldn't help but noticed but missing some of her old friends back in the Bikini Bottom. When Poseidon declares a New Land for a New Kingdom in exchange for an award for someone, Plankton figures out a Best Idea to have the Krabby Patty Secret Formula all to himself; Have the Krusy Krab be sold, then, have the Formula as an Award for the Chum Bucket. When Poseidon steps in the Bikini Bottom for a New Land, he wants to condemn the entire City as a New Land for his own New Palace as he marks the Bikini Bottom as a New Land for himself while making some changes around in the City leading into the Bikini Bottom now having both a New Mayor/Ruler/King of the Sea that being the Greek God of the Seas himself as Poseidon gains a New Kingdom for his New Land. SpongeBob becomes heartbroken as he's desperately upset that this City will change differently no thanks to the Cruel Selfish Greek Counterpart of Neptune himself, SpongeBob had always grew up around in the Bikini Bottom as his often scared for the New Future of his City now that Poseidon is taking over it with a lot of Bad Changes such as replacing the Krusty Krab with the Chum Bucket. When King Neptune hears about the New Kingdom that Poseidon is setting in, he doesn't mind but at the Summer School when every Student hears about the News through a Radio, Mindy begins to worry since the friends that she knew from their Adventure of the First Movie live in the Bikini Bottom so the Princess sneaks out that Night and heads towards her own Father to look for help for the Said City. Tired but couldn't stand the New Change, SpongeBob decides that now would be the time to ask King Neptune to get his own City back so Neptune can confront Poseidon about having the Bikini Bottom being owned by Him. SpongeBob goes along with Patrick and much like in the Movie, Plankton sends them off with Otto taking SpongeBob and Patrick along with. During the Journey, SpongeBob and Patrick accidentally bumped in towards Mindy, who's also looking for Neptune as Mindy joins in the Duo's Adventure as they continued on their Journey together to find King Neptune before it's all too late for the Bikini Bottom. Up in the surface, a Group of Mermaid Sisters that are the Daughters of Nereus and Doris are chilling up on the Surface. Out of the most Elderly and Middlest Mermaids was Salacia (One of the Middlest Daughters of Nereus), described being the most Beautiful and Lovely, was busy decorating her own Crown with Seashells like a Flower Crown. When The Trio came up to the surface, they asked the Mermaid Sisters for directions if they could find the Roman God himself but the Mermaid Sisters don't know since they are not the Daughters of Neptune unlike Mindy who is the Daughter of an Actual Roman Deity. The Sisters began to tease on the Gang (mostly around SpongeBob and Patrick) until Salacia comes in a great approach which stops the Bullying for a moment. Salacia introduces herself to the Trio as the Trio explain that they're looking for King Neptune and that they would need a path to find the Roman God himself. For someone who once knew where it is, Salacia tells them that the Road to King Neptune under the sea is straight towards the Right Side far away throughout the Sea. The Trio thank Salacia as they jumped back in the sea, leaving the Mermaid Sisters behind, but Salacia on the Other Hand was so tired of her Sisters' Sarcastic Nature, she decided to join in the Trio's Quest because she figured that she would wanted to help out to show the Trio the way of where Neptune is. Back at the Bikini Bottom, with the Krusty Krab now cancelled, Squidward has a new job now with Mr. Krabs lost all the Money to his restaurant that was now cancelled. Sandy even spies on Poseidon with her own flying machine as she watches through it in her Tree Dome, she hears little talks about Poseidon and the Chancellor's conversation on how to overthrow Neptune just so that Poseidon can be claimed as the New and Main Ruler of all of the Seas for Himself. Shocking the Squirrel Girl, Sandy tells Mr. Krabs and Squidward about Poseidon's true secret as they were about to warn the whole Bikini Bottom but they ended up getting caught by Poseidon's guards in the Greek God's clutches. The Chancellor finds Sandy's Spying Flying Machine that she left as Poseidon instantly makes SpongeBob's friends into slaves for new servants around in his Kingdom as the Three Friends were now forced to work at the King's Domain. Poseidon even made Gary to have his slime be used as a cream for his face like in the Movie. The Entire Staff of the Princess School (mostly likely the Teachers who worked there) have realized that the Daughter of King Neptune has gone missing. Fearing of the King's Troubles, they sent out on a Search Party to look for his Missing Daughter. During the Gang's Journey, in a Campfire, Salacia does get to know about SpongeBob, Patrick, and even Mindy as they would tell stories to each other of their lives as Salacia would always tell her own stories about her own life and how that she was the most different Mermaid out of most of the Merfolks under the sea who had deep care for Marine Animals like Fish than Her own Kind. The New Mermaid Friend explains to herself that throughout her life, she had a huge fascination with Marine Animals as she used to befriend a one particular Dolphin Girl and other Small Sea Creatures but Salacia and her Family had to move away, thus, she never saw her one true dolphin childhood friend again. Soon after as the years go by for Salacia's growth, her Elder Sisters began to have Boyfriends that Nereus would always arrange his Daughters for Future Marriages for both his Daughters for their Mermen Lovers as Salacia was once in a forced marriage with a Snobby Prince but she and her Old Said Boyfriend broke up as life was hard for Her growing up. The Trio felt for Salacia as Mindy truly understands her as she felt that she was in the same place as Salacia too, so SpongeBob thought that befriending a New Mermaid would perhaps be a very good choice for Salacia since everyone who has lived a harsh life deserves friends. When the Gang continue on their Journey, they almost get crashed by a Giant Bounder that almost hits them but the Gang are saved by a Spiritual Magical Ancient Sea Dragon who guides them by the same, "Sage". Sage decides to help out the Gang as he leads them towards the way as a Guide to help the Young Heroes for their Journey of the Roman God in order for the Said Gang to face up some Challenges. Unaware that the Gang are being watched, when Poseidon realizes that his new servants' friends including the Sponge Guy are gone, Poseidon looks through his Magic Crystal Ball and sees SpongeBob and his Friends going through an Adventure to find Neptune. Angered by this situation that the Joyful Sponge himself is actually going to tell Neptune the truth, however, Poseidon then gets surprised when the Lovely Mermaid Salacia herself gets caught towards Poseidon's attention as Salacia's Beauty fills Poseidon with the Fire of Heart as Poseidon immediately falls in love with her. The Gang first come across a Bar that invested with Ghost Pirates as they drink over for some beer until they meet the Leader of the Ghost Pirate Bar, El Diablo. Much like in the Movie, SpongeBob and Patrick are send by El Diablo's office, the Boys accidentally disintegrate Him, the Pirate Spirits are free. The Gang have passed their own First Challenge thanks to Sage as Sage gives them the Challenge Coin that SpongeBob and his Friends had when they were at the bar. When Poseidon kepts watching the Sponge and his Friends go by throughout their journey, Poseidon figures out a plan to stop the Sponge and his Friends by distracting them to go to the Other/Wrong way instead of the right way that they were heading for with the use of his own Magic. But when SpongeBob's friends hear about the News that SpongeBob and Patrick with the help of some Mermaids are on their way to help, they were so happy that they were gonna get rescued by their own Heroic Friend, but not on to Poseidon's watch. At the Chum Bucket, while Plankton is so happy that his own restaurant is finally getting the attention it deserves as he now sells Krabby Patties thanks to Poseidon who gave him his own award, the Arch-Nemesis of the Said Crab begins to miss the Old Days of how things used to be before the terrible change. As the Gang were almost there to Neptune's Kingdom, Poseidon instantly tricks them through his Magic Crystal Ball into having a sign that leads towards the left side which makes the Friends accidentally go to the Other Way which turns out is a mistake as the Friends were then caught by the Slugs lead by the Slug King. The Slug King then forces SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mindy as his slaves by doing the chores while the Said Slug King himself wants to make Salacia as a Slug Queen but Salacia instantly disgusted by the Slug King's ugliness and refuses to marry him. Since Salacia rejected him, Slug King decides to make Salacia as his Main Slave Girl with The Gang now working as New Servants for a King of Royal Slugs. However, SpongeBob instantly comes up with a Plan as he tricks the Slug King into eating a Grain of Salt in Bread which burns his Mouth as the Gang manage to escape causing the Slug Guards to chase after them but Sage saves them as he scares the Slugs off with his Fire Powers. As the Gang continue on their Journey, they were somehow far away from the Bikini Bottom, sensing that they were getting close to Neptune's Kingdom. However, they instantly ran over into a Kraken that tries to attack them causing the Gang to Panic as the Kraken tries to attack but chases after them. The Kraken instantly captures Mindy but Patrick saves her as he instantly punches the Kraken right into the Eye as Salacia and Sage push a Bounder right over the Kraken as the Said Sea Beast dies. After a Long Rough Journey, the Gang finally made it towards the Land of King Neptune around his Kingdom. SpongeBob and his Friends silently but slowly walk quietly towards the Kingdom inside around in the Halls to look for the Roman God himself. Unfortunately, when the Gang accidentally crash into Neptune's stuff, it causes a big huge loud noise as Neptune turns and sees SpongeBob and his Friends in his Kingdom without permission to come in. The Roman God felt horrified of why they came here (especially his Daughter), but Mindy tries to explain that they wanted her Father's help to stop Poseidon but the Said Roman God doesn't believe in his Daughter's foolishness as he thinks it's a trick that they're pulling out so he kicks them out right into the curve. When Mindy is finally found after all those Days by one of her School's Teachers, King Neptune is very disappointed in his Daughter that she ran away, Mindy was sent back to Princess School, thus, the Friends had to split apart. When SpongeBob and Patrick failed to save their town, they decided to head home but Sage says to not gave up. Fortunately the Duo didn't care anymore as this was a hard decision that they for now had to accept it as they immediately head back to the Bikini Bottom. All that was left was Salacia, who felt bad for her New Friends since the Four Had at least a Fun Journey that they all went through. Salacia felt in sorrow for she felt bad for both of her new friends but what's importantly of all was that she was all alone without them while Sage had no choice but disappear in magic. Salacia sat down in a rock for she began to cry up, thinking of all the harsh times that she has been throughout the years especially in both of her Childhood and her Adulthood when she had a rough time making relationships. When Poseidon sees her crying all alone through his Crystal Ball, he instantly comes up with a plan to have her; make her his Wife and New Queen of the Seas, then, overthrow Neptune, since he's been obsessing over for her for Days just thinking about her. As the Greek God teleports him and his carriage as he tricks a Dolphin into luring her, Salacia meets Poseidon the very first time in his Carriage as He asks her to join him and be his Bride. Without any further of a second choice, Salacia accepts, only because she wants to know what the Bikini Bottom looks like since it's the place that SpongeBob lives there. When Sage finds out about this, he immediately runs back into SpongeBob and Patrick (who were just going on their way home) as he warns them that Poseidon has captured Salacia which shockens the Duo for a moment as Sage immediately takes them back to the Bikini Bottom to go save her and their entire town. During her stay in the Bikini Bottom, Poseidon showed her around the new palace that she will now live in, Salacia was impressed and amazed by the place but deep down, she missed her new friends since they were very close to her that no one other friend was to her in her life. While SpongeBob and Patrick were heading back to save the Bikini Bottom, Poseidon and Salacia do quite to get to know each other some quite time as Salacia develops a crush on him even after when they figured out on how to start a good relationship before marrying each other. Unaware that Salacia is also now secretly in love with him, even when Poseidon introduced his Bride to his own pet sea horse, Arion (the Baby Horse that he raised since Ancient Times). Poseidon decides to put up a wedding so Salacia could become his Queen of their New Kingdom. When the Duo finally made it back to the Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob calls Mindy and tells her to bring Her Father to come over because Poseidon has kidnapped Salacia to make her his Queen of the Sea as Mindy immediately gets to her own School's Principal. Plankton decides to help in only because he's doing this just to have the Good Old Days back because he's now very tired and bored of how new things are turning out and he only wants to save his Arch-Rival. Sage wishes them a good luck to them as he flies off to go get the King Neptune's. When Plankton and the Duo sneak fully run up towards Poseidon's Palace, they start freeing the Rest of the Bikini Bottomites and their own Friends out of their Cages as Sandy, Krabs, Squidward, and Gary team up with SpongeBob to stop Poseidon before it's too late. Poseidon forms up a Date in the Lounge that he orders his Servants to help out just so that he could propose to her where he could wed her and finally make her Queen. Unaware that the Heroic Duo are now back, Salacia joins in the Date that Poseidon set for them as the servants appreciated their new upcoming Queen. After watching acts on the Stage, it was now the perfect time for the Greek Sea King to propose to Salacia with a Wedding Ring that he grabbed out but that gets instantly ruined when SpongeBob and his Friends stop King Poseidon and even save their New Mermaid Friend. Surprised to see that the Heroes have now come back, Salacia was happy to see her new friends again as SpongeBob got her back as Poseidon immediately pulls out his Trident and even attacks SpongeBob and their Friends as he chases them through the entire kingdom leaving Salacia behind as she tried to stop her future husband but Poseidon was out of rage outside of the Palace. SpongeBob and Poseidon ended up having a big battle throughout the entire chase of his Kingdom as Poseidon keeps trying to zap SpongeBob but fails. Sage even back as he saved SpongeBob in the middle of a Fight as Poseidon instantly zapped Sage right into his back as the Sea Dragon falls down on the ground, outside of Poseidon's Kingdom. SpongeBob is now in shocked for his Sea Dragon Mentor was now hurt down as he comforted his dragon friend, but when Poseidon walks down outside as he was about to finish up the Sponge, but the battle roughly ends when The Famous Roman Sea God come in and stop Poseidon, even Mindy and Salacia were at The Roman King's side while protecting SpongeBob and his Friend while Patrick and the Gang instantly walked down and were surprised to see The Two Sea Kings thanks to Sage who convinced the Roman King. Neptune is deeply disappointed in Poseidon but his Greek Counterpart said that he didn't mean any of it and that he just wanted to get all the attention that he deserves as a True Main Sea King but Neptune refuses to have Poseidon be the Main Ruler of the Sea since he stated that he had the right to be the chosen one as Main Ruler of the Seas and therefore not Poseidon. SpongeBob explains that the Bikini Bottom is their only home to live and that they need their home in order to survive and live since it's not meant to be a place for Rulers to rule there. Neptune felt disappointed in his Greek Counterpart as Poseidon apologizes since he was only a bit jealous of Neptune gaining more popularity by the Fish Folks under the sea as Neptune forgives his apology as he is sorry for overshadowing him, but Poseidon felt so lonely since he never had any love nor friends in his entire life as he cried, knowing that he had face up these consequences for all these years. SpongeBob and Salacia stepped forward comforting the Greek God himself as they've decided to become Poseidon's new friends as He and the Bikini Bottomines including the Other Sea King and Mindy forgive Him. Salacia does accept his apology as he tells him that she was once unloved too and that no man ever came into her life before Poseidon chose her. With a cheer up of a kiss, Poseidon feels a lot better as he proposes to Salacia, to in which, she accepts his proposal as The Two Wed in the Bikini Bottom with Salacia now Second Queen of the Sea. Salacia thanks SpongeBob for the Adventure that she gave as Salacia now stays with Poseidon as her new husband as the two leave the City as they now go back to his Old Palace where it was now redesigned as Poseidon and Salacia become the Second Royal Couple under the Sea while the Bikini Bottom was now fully restored (even the Krusty Krab was now back in business with Plankton returning the Formula to Krabs) as Merfolks from King Neptune's side would now a days pay a visit to the Bikini Bottom including The Main Royal Sea Kings along with Mindy and Salacia, who often visit their friends as Mindy would sometimes bring her own Siblings with her whenever they would visit the Bikini Bottom. I decided to make Sage into a Sea Dragon as an Inspiration for a Chinese Dragon from Chinese Mythology/Folklore since they represent Good Luck in Chinese Culture since Sage somewhat reminded Me of a Wise Chinese Dragon (hence, that's why I changed his design). Also, since it's actually meant to be an AU, Poseidon's disguise form in this is actually his actual true form and not an Old Man in disguise since I'm more used to his Other Form than the True One. Also, in this version, this re-written story develops friendships and relationships slowly instead of having it rush like in the Movie, so in this version of mine, the Portrayal of Poseidon in this gets to have more character instead of less screen-time. Also, before you guys kindly asked, I've decided to have King Neptune and Queen Amphitrite to have Three Daughters instead of just One based on the one version where the Actual Sea Rulers had Three Daughters and One Son.
