It's kind of a shame that the "anti-filler" mentality has reached a point where a lot of writers (and fans) assume that if a show isnt constantly moving the plot forward and establishing lore, its basically filler and wasting space. Personally I think its good, if not necessary for a show to slow down and just have characters hang out, or deal with smaller conflicts.
It feels like a lot of stories just want to rush to the emotional scenes with barely any build up to really make it feel earned and satisfying. I've seen fans pester creators to rush the story along and reach the next big set piece rather than take the time to really know and appreciate the characters.
Why should I care about the emotional stakes in episode 2 when I barely know a character's likes and dislikes? how they handle conflict, their approach to relationships both platonic and romantic. etc,
#txt#it seems to be a problem in both indie and professional settings#i have a lot of mixed feelings on steven universe. but one thing i always appreciated was the clear prioritization of character focused#episodes. its why i never agreed with the take that season 1 is bad or the 'worst season' because it had 'too much filler'#the latter fantastic episodes from seasons 2 and 3 would not hit as hard without the amount of time and hours spent really getting to know#these characters.

interesting it is, that Sevika and Marcus are opposites in how they are standing with Silco and also lose their arms in different ways
Now this might be a reach but Sevika is Silco's right hand and she lost her LEFT ARM (again Im terrible with left and right sigh), leaving her always figuratively standing at Silco's right guarding him, loyal.
While Marcus was bought and wasn't ever really loyal. When he died it was also caused by Jinx in proximity to Silco, like with Sevika when she lost her arm but Marcus was never truly loyal and also never really as close to Silco meaning he wasn't there when he died, only came later. anyways I still like the significance of that no matter how dumb I can be leave me be :<

#one cup butter#place it in a sauce pan and heat on medium till it gets all yummy smelling#it’ll turn brown two!#stir it constantly as it heats to ensure it won’t burn#LET IT COOL#once it’s cooled add 1 cup brown sugar and 2/3 cup white sugar#stir stir stir#once it’s combined add in 2 eggs and then 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla#I usually measure with my heart tho#In a diff bowl add your 2 3/4 cups flour and 1 teaspoon cornstarch and 1 teaspoon baking powder#one teaspoon baking soda and 3/4 teaspoon salt#it’s better to sift this before you mix it all together but I only ever do that when I’m working at the bakery#just adding everything for the homies#gradually add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture and mix until almost combined#add as many chocolate chips as you desire#cover that dough and let it sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes but an hour or more is best#this allows the butter flavor to incorporate itself#trust when I say it makes a difference#heat oven to 350#take out dough 15 min before cooking to let it soften a bit#shape into cookie balls and bake for#10-12 minutes till golden brown#let ‘em sit on the pan for like 10ish minutes before you try to move them#sprinkle with sea salt for extra yum but this is optional#EAT LIKE TWELVE 👹#whine about a tummy ache and then lay in bed and contemplate why you ate so many#the end 🪱

went to a comic store today and saw individual issues of idw sonic in person for the first time ever btw . epic win
#not that ive never been to a comic shop before its just the only.one thats anywhere near me#is one i didnt know existed until like a year ago because its in a weird spot#and their hours are very incompatible with the days/times im actually able to go around shopping#and ive also been to other places that sell comics they just never hvae idw sonic#ANYWAYS i got to go today and they had sonic yayyy . and i also got an issue of monster high new scaremester#because ive really been wanting to read that one and havent been able to find it online like . at all. nobody is archiving that thing ....#i only got issue 2 though because they were out of issue 1#and i didnt have a single chance to check for issue 1 when it came out. because of the previously mentioned scheduling curse#nervous that i actually spent money on it because idk if im even gonna like it#ive heard mixed reviews on it and the book that its a continuation of . but fuck it we ball#also if this store carries sonic idk how i never saw it before because i Have been a couple times in the past#maybe they just now started getting it recently?? or just happened to be out the last few times?? idk

#you should find 2 hours for this im so serious it's so well done#i have such diametrically opposed feelings about arcane as a whole lol (yapping INCOMING)#like i looove the artistry i like season 1 i enjoy some SPECIFIC things they do in season 2#but honestly watching season 2 overall is just me saying 'hm. kinda dont like that at all' over and over#and then getting one scene thrown in the mix occasionally that makes me insane#and then going right back to kinda being like hmm. not great#the more i sit with it the more im like 'oh 100% they planned this from the beginning' which SUCKS#cause like. if they just pivoted halfway through and made a catastrophic writing blunder it'd feel less bad#than many people committing to such a messy wishy washy grand scale vision from the start#at least season 2 gave me jayvik enjoyment. did not gaf about it until jayce went off the rails the second season 2 started#even tho i really like what season 2 does to jayce's character it comes at the cost of viktor's#jayce cant reckon with the quencies (consequences) of his selfish actions if he doesn't lose someone close to him because of them#which means making viktor the monster jayce created (and hextech)#and like that IS some great interesting texture to his character#the idea that jayce can shirk personal responsibility because he's only a tool for others' political endeavors#he can disavow weapons n then build them in the next breath and not feel guilt because he trusts others' ideas of what the 'right thing' is#but then when he finally does something selfish. when he overrides someone else's moral code for his own desires#(reviving viktor against his wishes and sending him down the path of nearly ending the world)#THAT'S when he recognizes how his own actions directly endanger people and that's when he suffers the most (going to Hell World)#and that's why jayce was able to stop viktor when nobody else could. yes he loves him but he recognizes how this was HIS fault#and is willing to finally take responsibility and die for it to truly save the most people possible#when so many others in the final conflict were fighting for personal reasons or no reason at all#and that's so good! that's a really great interesting character arc for jayce#but it comes at the cost of absolutely DESTROYING viktor and making him so emotionally inaccessible for the entirety of season 2#like he has zero thoughts about anything he's doing. he philosophizes with singed and sky and none of it means fucking anything#because if viktor felt anything about what he's doing. he wouldn't do it#he's a passenger to the narrative's idea of how the arcane could pose a massive threat through a simulacrum of viktor's league lore#humanism pushed too far to the point that humanity is inferior etc etc but viktor never instigates it#its always outside forces using viktor as a vehicle for their own goals and him being like what the hell. sure#like even ghostly sky directing viktor to that SPECIFIC spot in zaun to become jesus does not feel like viktor's own choice

Listened to Eternal Dance Engine ~ Shall We Dance!! one too many times (and then like a hundred more times afterwards for good measure) and dropped everything to go draw this. Also tried out a new shading process which kinda did what I wanted it to but I’ll keep experimenting

having a relatively calm day after a streak of few-times-a-day meltdowns since december is weirdly eerie and i honestly dunno what to do with myself before it hits me again
