hi reddit. here are some tips.

i will be putting these below a "readmore" - which is the first lesson. on desktop there is a button for this. on mobile you type :readmore: followed by a linebreak. it is considered common ettique to shorten your long posts in this way.

by the way, are you reblogging a long post that isn't under a readmore? tag that as #long post so users can blacklist it and not have to scroll for five years.

Title. Icon. Banner. blog description. (look around if you need an idea for what to put in your blog description.) Blogs without this information (ESPECIALLY the no icon + no title combo) gets you blocked immediately. This is because tumblr has always had a severe bot problem. Just grab a meme from your camera roll or a picture of a character you like from google.

also, because most users have their pronouns in their bio, it is expected that you will look there to check before addressing them, out of courtesy. don't just default to "they" - only do that if a person's pronoun's are unclear or if the pronouns listed ARE "they."

Disable public likes. the like button is for personal bookmarking. very often, people will like posts they have not read yet, so that they can read them later. a person's likes is not always reflective of their stances, and if your likes are public, people may use them against you in an argument. think of your likes as your browser history. tumblr users value privacy in this instance.

unrelated to the above point: likes are also used to show compassion for a user going through a tough time, or to say "hey, i thought this joke you made was funny." this use of likes is more for friend-to-friend communication.

Disable anything in your settings that is algorithmic including seeing posts based on other people's likes (one, because algorithms exist to make you mad and two, as part of respecting privacy)

set "following" to appear before "for you" (and overall avoid "for you")

Snooze Tumblr Live (sorry. you have to do this once a week bc tumblr sucks.)

Open your askbox so people can communicate with you. Decide if you want to allow anonymous asks and/or public DMs.

Enable the desktop version of your blog. This makes it so that when you use a computer and go to [yourusername].tumblr.com you can have a website with HTML and CSS. tumblr has tried very hard to kill blog personalization but you can find many helpful users posting in the tags, as well as pre-made themes you can install. tumblr users are the ones making the bulk of neocities websites, and in general tend to be friendly in redirecting you to resources.

enabling your desktop blog also allows you to insert links and do very basic editing (like inserting line breaks) in your blog description (we call "bio") which translates to the mobile version of your theme. you have to do this in the editor for the desktop on a computer. also, editing your theme on mobile (like changing color, font) will undo your HTML. your best bet is to edit your mobile theme first and THEN do the HTML/link stuff on a computer. i know it sounds a bit convoluted but you'll figure it out. (this website is made of duct tape)

also while you are on desktop: download xkit rewritten. it won't work on mobile but it gives you a lot of helpful features. also consider installing ublock origin if you haven't already, because tumblr will sometimes add annoying widgets to their website and that tool will allow you to block them. i also use "palettes for tumblr" to customize my dashboard color. tumblr DOES have built-in dashboard themes but i do not like them personally.

pinned posts. you can pin any post you make or reblog. some people use this to pin a funny meme, and other people use the pinned post as an extended bio (or otherwise an alternative to it). a tumblr post made on desktop can hold up to 30 images (the limit is 10 on mobile.) you can also embed links, a video, and even audio. you can change text color, have bullet points, and increase font size. as such, you can express yourself much more in a pinned post than in your mobile blog description. a typical pinned post may include information about the user, a link to an external website (like a carrd, neocities, or linktree), and sometimes an image or two. tumblr allows you to disable reblogs for a post, so most pinned posts are set this way so it just stays on a user's blog.

DNIs (also called "BYF"). not everyone uses them, and they can be divisive. it stands for "Do Not Interact" - and is a boundary set to keep people away. this may include age (example: "minors DNI"), political opinions (example: "prolifers DNI"), and sometimes deeply niche online discourse. DNIs are also sometimes a joke (example: "DNI if you like tuna salad"). there is actually a meme where someone will write a post with a very long, unreasonable DNI and users will count how many apply to them.

If you would upvote a post on reddit, you would reblog it here. If you see something and you think it is cool, you think it is funny, or you think it is helpful, reblog it. Some users have sideblogs (you can have infinite sideblogs attached to your main account) to organize all of the posts they reblog. Others simply use a tagging system for organizational purposes (and so users can blacklist ("filter") those tags in their settings if they don't want to see the post). For example, if I followed a user for Star Trek, but they also posted a lot of Star Wars, I might add "#star wars" to my list of filters. This way, I am only seeing the Star Trek posts. Tumblr's default way of handling this is to display a box that says "this post contains #Star Wars" and you can choose whether or not to open it. on desktop with xkit rewritten, you can have it hide those boxes entirely. please use filters. your sanity will thank you.

In a reblog, Organizational Tags are for /you./ I see a lot of confusion about this from new users. If you reblog someone else's post and add 500 tags..... it's not going to get picked up in tumblr search. You're not going to get any sort of exposure. Because it is not your post. Those tags are only for /you/ - if you want to find the post again.

tags are also used for commentary. most tumblr users do /not/ talk in post replies or in the comments of a reblog. most of them talk in tags. tags have a character limit so these messages are broken up in fragments. tumblr uses a comma (,) to make a new tag, so users often use either no punctuation or a period (.) or a hyphen (-) to break up thoughts. two apostrophes ('') are used instead of quotation marks (because they dont work in tags). this is also where "tumblr writing style" comes from. we all began to write in lowercase and use punctuation in. a weird way. like. for emphasis. there is also the Tumblr Comma, a special unicode character that resembles a comma and works in tags when copy+pasted or put there with a keyboard shortcut. but this is often not used. here it is: ‚

also here's an example of tags. you will notice that commentary goes before organizational: #GOD DHSHSKDDJDL #i cannot BELIEVE i forgot about this. what the fuck #star trek #spock

when leaving tags, most users talk to themselves. but please remember that tags can be seen by anyone, including the original poster. in general, it is discouraged to traumadump or be rude.

"prev tags" (which tumblr staff is trying their damnest to erase sadly) is when a user reblogs a post from another user and tags it simply ''prev'' or ''prev tags" (meaning "i agree with the previous user's tags"). sometimes it's because a thoughtful observation was made, but usually it's a way of saying "hey! that was a funny joke!" without putting the user on blast by screenshotting the tags. it's most common between friends and mutuals (users following each other). i would say it is equivalent to users whispering to each other and giggling rather than getting up on a table and shouting. "prev tag chain" is when users reblog "prev tags" "prev prev tags" - and so on. however, sadly, tumblr has removed the feature of moving backwards in a reblog chain on desktop. i have not updated my app and refuse to, so i so not know if it is gone on mobile as well, but it probably is. EDIT: the browser extension Xkit Rewritten has an option now, in "tweaks" called "restore links to individual posts in post header." it should be the first option. prev tags, on desktop at least, is saved!

screenshotting someone elses tags and adding the image in a reblog is known as "passing peer review." it is, however, considered to be Greatly Annoying to accompany those tags with unnecessary commentary (ex: "these tags pass peer review!" "WHY WOULD YOU LEAVE THIS IN THE TAGS" "LMAAOO THIS IS SO FUNNYYY"). the tags can stand on their own. the only instance in which this is different is during a serious discussion, when you want to build off of another user's perspective. in which case, you address them as normal. some people credit taggers, some people don't. crediting tends to occur in discussions.

when making an original post, do not use irrelevant tags for Exposure. this is Greatly Hated by the userbase and is also against the TOS. you will get blocked at best, reported or yelled at at worst. only add relevant tags, and do not go overboard.

reposting other people's artwork is highly discouraged and is considered the Highest Offense. if you do any sort of reposting, you should credit and link to a creator directly. however, tumblr loves reposted videos, especially ones from tiktok. there are entire accounts dedicated to posting those.

sideblogs! it is possible to have multiple blogs under one email address. tumblr treats these blogs as proxies of your main blog. this means that sending someone an ask/commenting in the replies of a post will always appear with the name of your main blog, your likes will appear with the name of your main blog, and that if you follow someone you will appear on their followers list as your main blog (so you may be mutuals with someone and not even know it because their sideblog interacts with you, but isn't on your follower's list... because their main blog is listed there instead.) however, DMs DO appear as the sideblog name. you cannot swap your main blog with your sideblog. and right now, there is a bug where deleting a sideblog will delete your entire tumblr account so. don't do that lol. anyway, the amount of sideblogs you can make is literally infinite and i think there's just a Daily Limit of creating 10 of them or something. some users make a sideblog for each interest they have. others have no sideblogs and reblog everything to main. and then you have people like me that do both. somehow. some users will make sideblogs to hoard URLs. also sorry i'm just introducing this now, but that is what our usernames are called. because when tumblr was more desktop-oriented, every blog was literally a Personal Website. so ya. we call them "URLs." anyway, if someone wants to hang onto a URL for later, they might save it on an empty blog. this usually pisses people off. a "canon URL" is when someone has a URL that is like One Word or a Company Name or a Fictional character. hypothetical examples: "ketchup" "burgerking" "lukeskywalker." these are highly rare, coveted, and you look cool as hell if you have one.

tumblr's /\/SFW policy (/\/ is an N. i've censored it.) is best described as ???. posts that are safe for work get marked as /\/SFW and hardcore p0rn somehow persists. in general, be very wary of posting even artistic nvdity (even though it is supposedly permitted.) never deliberately mark your own posts as Mature. this is essentially like walking directly into a bear trap and waving a big sign at tumblr staff saying "hey! make it so people can't find my blog and i'm far more likely to get banned!" also do not tag posts with "/\/SFW." too many of those will get your entire blog marked as mature (which makes your posts pretty much invisible to other users.) tumblr users used /\/SFT (/\/ot safe for tumblr) for a long time, but staff caught on. there is now no consensus and people use their own personal tags for it. just pick something and people will catch on and blacklist it if need be. (btw you CAN type whatever you want on this website. i am only censoring in the hopes that this will allow my post to appear in the tags. this isn't tiktok lol)

while it is possible to disable reblogs on a post, this is a very RECENT addition and most users forget it exists. as such, please use common sense. if someone has written a post about, say, how sad they are feeling because they got in a fight with their family... that's not a good post to reblog. a like would be better here, like a pat on the back.

we LOVE polls. we love them. they are like sports to us. most of them are popularity polls - who is the better character? but people also use polls for, say, making bug emojis "race" each other. or "lets build a cake." other people use polls to write poetry, or learn about regional differences, or even to draw a pen!s. if you tag a poll as "poll" it will most likely be seen and voted in, because users look in the tag to find buttons to click.

there is unfortunately a T3RF (this one censored specifically to protect my notifs lmao. 3 is E) presence here. report, block, ignore, move on. common courtesy for users to inform each other if one is accidentally reblogged from. it also helps to blacklist tags related to them to avoid them. use shinigam! eyes browser extension on desktop.

there is NO equivalent to reddit awards on this website. as the userbase hates the staff, it is considered blasphemous to spend your money on checkmarks, etc. - buying them as a gift for another user is seen as a hostile act. it's like receiving a "kick-me" sign. once owned, badges cannot be deleted. thankfully, tumblr now allows you to disable checkmarks and other badges from appearing publically. that said, some users also give checkmarks unironically to show appreciation??? and others buy checks for themselves???? so yeah. tumblr doesnt actually have a verification system - these exist to mock twitter and to make a quick buck.

tumblr blaze. essentially, tumblr has a system in place to showcase user posts instead of advertisements sometimes. this is done by the user paying money. the higher the amount, the more impressions. tumblr users can now also blaze OTHER PEOPLE'S POSTS. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BLAZE DISABLED!!! blazing another person's post (without asking first) is seen as a hostile act. why? because most blazed posts result in rude comments from strangers who are annoyed to see the post on their dashboard. unless it's like, a cute picture of a cat. or something genuinely helpful. boosting your soundcloud or a selfie or a rant about fandom does not typically garner positive responses. you can blaze just like. watch out. and also always ask the OP if you want to blaze someone else's post. (there is a reason this feature is called "blaze pvp")

tumblr merch is also frowned upon, as tumblr staff steals ideas from the userbase and profits off of them without financially compensating or crediting the users. there was a meme on here, "vanilla extract", that tumblr turned into water bottles while the person who made the meme was having to fundraise to survive :(

Rules & Navigation Tags below the cut!

1. My blog is semi selective as of 2022. I will not follow back each time I receive a new follower. On the flip side, if I follow and I see selective or mutual, I strongly hesitate to interact even if the follow is or isn't returned. I haven't had the best experience when trying to meet new mutuals, so if I don't reach out first regarding interactions, its nothing personal, just me being more scared of disrespecting boundaries than anything else. So if you have any questions or hesitation regarding interactions, shoot me a message!

2. Rockelle has a triggering past including abuse, domestic violence, rape, cheating, etc. I have an umbrella tag, 'dont pull it; {triggers tag}' which is for any and all triggers. I will tag the individual triggers as best as I can but if you wish to avoid any and all topics including any sorts of triggers, please block the designated triggers tag.

3. I am a mobile only user, I do not use desktop Tumblr at all. I attempt to make the experience as similar to desktop tumblr as possible but of course since we do not see the same thing, I apologize for any inconveniences this causes you. This means I cannot cut posts or replicate most of the features from desktop, I dont do much to my blog mainly due to the limitations.

7. Check the tags during roleplays! Within the first few replies, I try to make little tags that describe your character! It could be a movie, song, tv show reference or even a joke! I work hard on them so look at them or I steal kneecaps. >:(

8. Anytime I get a new mutual, I send a thank you message! It helps with me keeping track of them and it opens the door to talk about scenarios, plotting, etc. And if you don't respond, thats okay! I will still interact with you and love your muses just the same! Side note, if I forget to give a thank you, it doesnt mean I dont like your muse or you any less!

9. Rockelle is 100% fandomless so she doesnt fit into one verse or universe. If the desired verse is not under the verses post, feel free to ask me about anything you like! Dont think Rockelle only fits into a bubble due to her character design, just ask!

10. I do not have a banned faceclaim list but I strongly hesitate to interact with those who use dead people as faces. This does not apply to canon characters such as batman, joker, etc due to them having 'new' faces depending on the era.

11. For my mobile users, all of my character info and other related content is under the #lovely kitten; {character info} or #lovely kitten {character info} tag for easy access.

12. Me being a mobile user, I cannot see your rules, info, etc if you do not have a caard or link available on your blog. So if I reach out to ask for them, please dont take it personally.

13. Want to stop a roleplay? Cool! Want to change the trajectory of how the plot is moving? Cool! Want to ship? Thats very cool! You just have to make sure to communicate these things with me. I am not a mind reader and while I will try to be as upfront as possible regarding things, I do not want to make anyone feel discomfort or not enjoy roleplaying with me. I wont bite if you no longer want to continue interacting or cut out something in a roleplay! I wont know until you tell me, communication is key!

idk if anyone’s made a post about XKit Rewritten for the New Twitter Users TM but imo the site is unlivable without it. there’s a firefox version or a chrome version (or if you’re checking for a different browser, make sure it’s posted by April Sylph, she’s the current developer). the settings are configured through your browser topbar with other extensions.

it allows you a bunch of personal tweaks to customize the dashboard, like built-in adblock, blocking individual posts, putting timestamps on posts, shortening long posts, simple accessibility options like enabling alt text on the bottom of images or pausing gifs and animated elements, and hiding a whole bunch of small annoyances:

some of these are also available through tumblr’s native Dashboard Settings, and there’s a blacklist function using “Filtered Tags��� and “Filtered Post Content” under Account Settings.

the sticky “following / for you” banner they put at the top of the desktop can be removed through ublock origin (right-click, select “block element”, and highlight the whole banner and click).

i also use the old, very broken New XKit for Old Blue which reverts the dashboard’s color palette to its old lower-contrast version, but there are again native dashboard themes which you can adjust that with. i would recommend NOT using the beta post editor because it’s much buggier and harder to use but you can’t use the newer features (such as restricting reblogs or marking explicit content) without it. worse than that it gives you a wonderful redundant pop-up confirming you’ve reblogged a post, which can also be removed through ublock origin.

I had time to kill. Like now.

I started out looking for a user group or discussion forum about Audio Research gear. I have learned some things over the years and wondered if there was a place to share this, or to see if anyone else had similar experiences. Short answer is I am still looking.

I found a promising site at the Steve Hoffman forum from a few years ago and was now archived. In that one a person was asking about why his ARC preamp was not sounding good with a moving magnet phono cartridge that sounded fine on other phono stages. Oh I know, I know! Except the thread was closed and the most recent post was 2019.

ARC preamps are voiced for MC cartridges with very high capacitance in the phono input. It is easy to change with snippers and knowing what to look for, as I do. Most MMs such as Audio Technica will sound shrill and hard as they react and resonate with the capacitance. After a snip they sound fine. I blame this for the popularity of moving coils in general. I think the thread concluded that the unit was probably defective and was sent to the factory for a check.

I also have the recent fact about limited compatibility of power tubes. Specifically that there is a very limited range of bias adjustment that favors Russian tubes. Yes it is an easy mod, but I will not fiddle with ARC circuits. (aside from cutting phono preamp load capacitors out) The main board is sacrosanct.

Another Tube thing is the infamous Russian 6922 / 6DJ8 specification for preamps after the SP9. Turns out there is no such tube made in Russia. They have a close compatible actually listed as a 6N23P. Visually quite different guts. ARC specifically designed their preamps using the 6N23P parameters which are different enough to alter the voice and performance of the units. You want proper sound you need the Russian tube. The actual Russian label is 6H23Pi (Pi the greek letter associated with 3.1415926......) The manual should list that and not the 6DJ8 / 6922 / E88CC etc.

These are big and small things that ARC owners would benefit from. Since almost nobody checks this blog the wisdom is lost but to a very few.

That Hoffman place was as close as I got to a general information site.

The discussion about the phono cartridges got me thinking about the ones I had. Early on I had only a Shure M94ED ( I think ) and V15 III (I clearly recall). They were very good and for many people the late V15s were the best ever. I replaced that with my Signets TK7e, which I still have and was better to my ear. Well my Son-in-law has it right now. The bodies are fine but the styli are aged to death. I looked around and found that JICO in Japan makes brand new Styli for several models of Shure and also flogs their own bodies.

This is where it gets strange. The have several styli with exotic cantilever materials. The have Ruby and Saphire bonded to the diamonds as more conventional materials. Those are grown as crystals in labs and are both compounds of aluminum. Aluminum Oxide to be specific. Also good as an abrasive.

They also have several types of exotic wood cantilevers. WOOD. Tiny slivers of natures composite material.

Wood is light compared to metals and metallic crystals, but give me a break. It is no where near as stiff as metal by an order of magnitude, and would therefore have much lower resonant frequencies. It would have marginally better damping but please! That tells me it would sound relatively dull. Very expensive as well. Rare wood species, but a tiny block of wood would make a lot of slivers. Hey if anyone wants to send me one to listen to, feel free. I always reserve the right to be wrong. It just seems stupid to me.

That path lead me back to my old TK7E. There is a replacement stylus listed at several suppliers as a TKN22 which is not as good as the original. The ATN12s fits and is a very good shibata diamond. That is what is on it now. You can buy that made by AT, or JICO makes a slightly better version for less money that LPGear sells if you know how to look for it.

I was scammed…

… and the only point what bothers and concerns me is the fact that I was too careless and made a beginners mistake. Ok, the damage is also a bit annoying, but not the reason why I got a bit mad about my behavior. But let’s start from the beginning and see what we can learn from this…

What actually happened

It all happened on X (former Twitter) with a trade request from my end. I use X mainly for trading codes. The recent distribution of Worlds 2024 Steenee was an opportunity to trade other codes or reservations for future distributions. Last is a so called IOU trade („I owe you“) and, you may sense it already, it may be more risky. Tbf, even non-IOU code trades have their own potential that you get scammed.

Ok, let‘s get into the details. This was my request:

My request: I was offering a Steenee code and looked for reservations of the upcoming new birthday codes, which will be starting to be distributed locally in Japanese PokéCenters in November. Since one of my children will have its birthday beginning of November and I‘d like to redeem the birthday event on its birthday, I asked for a lower rate if someone can provide them until 5th November.

A user „Y1Fze11“ contacted me regarding my request with the promise that he will send me the required birthday codes on 2nd November. At this time, I didn’t know that there is a well-known trader @Y1Fze. I have met several trustworthy traders and all my IOU trades did happen in the past. I guess this made me a bit too careless and I sent my part without hesitation and assurance.

As soon as I‘ve sent the Steenee code, the user told me to send another one and I have to hurry, so that he will be able to organize better. This statement was so strange that I realized „I probably was scammed.“ - and it was too late, the user already confirmed that he received the Steenee. So I waited that he will block me which is a typical behavior. Right after, I recorded the conversation and wrote a report to warn other traders.

Let‘s see how we could prevent to be scammed

I think there are several ways, but let me list everything what comes to my mind. Please note that everything I list are only recommendations and may help you to prevent scammers, but will never guarantee that you will not be scammed. Additionally, this is summarized for X trades, trades on other communities might work differently.

Trade only with users you trust - try to establish your own network. Traders from Japan usually have a strong helping mindset, as soon as you proof yourself as a helpful contact, you‘ll be part of their network and they will help you to get codes/events distributed in Japan. Take care of your network and help other traders. Side note: traders from Japan prefer to get events/codes on the second day of its distribution at the latest. Everything after will be valued lower or might not be attractive to them anymore - which basically means that trades of codes from Japan will be easier for you later during their distribution period, but it also means that you should be able to provide western codes very early of their distribution period.

Be careful with users if their account is just a few months old

The amount of followers does not proof the trustworthiness of a user!

Some scammers imitate well-known traders, make a cross-check if the username/avatar seems familiar - I thank @alotofohshi and @sushi_zamurai_ for their advices as well.

Search through the hashtag #ポケモン詐欺 - block identified scammers. Even if they change their nickname, they will not be able to contact you. Review this hashtag frequently, because new accounts will be created.

For normal trades: let the person who approaches you be the first to send the agreed part, e.g. the code. Test the code before sending your code. Attention! Communicate that you will test the code before you‘re sending your code - you don’t want to be marked as a scammer!

For IOU trades: take an assurance. This could be anything with equal value.

For IOU trades with birthday codes: Check the ID - the trader has to send you a photo of his ID with his username on a note. All unnecessary (and private) information should be blackened like name, photo, ID number etc. - you need this just to check the persons date of birth to verify that he will be able to get the birthday code. Side note: birthday codes will be handed out in PokéCenters during the birth month only.

I will add new things to this list as soon as they come to my mind. You are also invited to let me know if you know anything else what should be added! 😇

Last, but not least: Don’t take it too personally if you were scammed. I know it is easier to say than to do, but experience something like that should not steal the fun in collecting and trading! I have met so many kind and trustworthy users since I‘m trading on X that it just doesn’t stop me or rather I‘m well aware that there are more sincere traders active than scammers 🤗

I’m about to drop my fave DM resources here because there are tons out there but these are the ones i actually use on a regular basis.

Now, there’s a free version and a paid version, and I’m lucky enough to have access to the paid (my partner bought it for the 2 of us) but the free version is no slouch, and it’s a lot better than trying to draw your own maps by hand or digitally to upload to a service like Roll20. You can build battle maps, city maps, and even world maps, there’s an optional grid, and so on. On free, you can have up to 10 maps at a time, paid yearly ($25) you get 1,000 maps.

The Bestiary

This one changed my whole life. I can filter the creatures by type, by CR, by whether or not they have a multiattack, I can include only spellcasting creatures, etc. etc. It’s thorough, it’s fairly intuitive to navigate, and it’s free. Bonus points, check out the Spells list as well. this resource is 10x better than DnDBeyond for ease of navigation and you don’t have to click through multiple pages; you just scroll and click on creatures you think are interesting.

This is my go-to for balancing combat. You can have multiple player levels and measure the difficulty of a monster by CR or by XP. It will calculate the CR of the entire encounter for you as well as add up the XP, and rank the encounter from Trivial to Deadly based on the DMG’s own guidelines for such an encounter by comparing the enemies to your party.

If you’re homebrewing a monster from scratch or simply trying to tweak a creature to fit a theme (or modify for the party’s level) this tool is perfect! It calculates the CR/XP of a creature based on the info you provide on its AC, HP, attack bonuses, damage-per-round, and other abilities, using the instructions provided by the DMG but without any hassle for you! The main struggle is in calculating the damage-per-round (you assume every attack hits, and that AOE effects hit 2 characters each time, add in damage bonuses, and any reactions/legendary actions that deal damage too, not just the creature’s turn.)

When I’m homebrewing a monster, or really anything, I go here. The coding side is fairly intuitive once you poke around a little bit. I like this for making monster stat blocks because it puts all the information in the same place as it would be for any other monster stat block. Easier to reference than a note sheet or DNDBeyond, and also incredibly easy to tweak and adjust.

Because my game is online, I use the free version of Roll20, but I’m getting sorely tempted by Foundry: https://foundryvtt.com/

Foundry has Roll20-like features but seems a lot more functional (I have endless user-interface issues with Roll20). Foundry’s software license is $50, though, so I’m holding off until I have some disposable income again. It’s got one over on Roll20 there, though, because Roll20′s paid version is $50/year, and Foundry is just a one-time purchase. Very interested but unless my players chip in I’ll stick with Roll20′s clunky interface in the meantime. If anyone’s used Foundry and can give me a review hmu so I can make a more informed decision though

I have Microsoft Office so I put my campaign preparation into a OneNote notebook for easy reference, and session notes go into a google doc so I can switch between tabs when I’m using Roll20 more easily.

My game uses Discord for voice and video chat, using a server so we can have several chat channels running with different topics, including a session chat. We also use the Craig bot to record the sessions and we haven’t had any issues so far!

The classic Sierra murder mystery game, developed by the mother of the genre Roberta Williams. Laura Bow is a sorely overlooked female protagonist. The game works by navigating Laura and typing in commands, kinda of tricky at first. Tons of game overs are a hallmark of a Sierra adventure game so save often! If you play the GOG.com version you get the benefit of autosaves. This game runs a timer, the events of the night will unfold with or without you so stay on your toes and keep moving! The game can be found for free here, but imo the $5.99 is worth it for the easy of access.

The Dagger of Amon-Ra (1992) $5.99 👧✨❕📚👿💀

“Laura Bow, intrepid heroine of The Colonel's Bequest, is back! This time she's trapped in a huge, imposing museum in the dead of night, surrounded by socialites, miscreants, thieves...and a cold, relentless murderer.“

Roberta Williams is back! Iconic game, iconic heroine. It’s still a Sierra game so like TCB there are tons of (iconic) game overs, so save often. Solving puzzles in this one gives me a great serotonin rush. Unfortunately, this game has some racism issues, particularly with the characters Lo Fat and Ramses. While an important game in the genre take it with a huge grain of salt and maybe turn of the (kind of awful) voice acting and enable text-only mode and you’ll avoid some awful accents.

Sam & Max: Hit the Road (1993) $5.99 💕✨

“Sam (a canine shamus) and Max (a hyperkinetic rabbity thing) are hot on the trail of a runaway carnival bigfoot across America’s quirky underbelly in this deranged animated adventure!“

Sam & Max are truly my favorite characters in all of fiction. I have the box art to this game as my phone case. I have Sam & Max action figures, a plush Max on my bed, a print edition of Sam & Max Freeland Police Special #1 framed on my wall. From comics, to games, to cartoons I love these guys. Sam & Max: Hit the Road is a classic of the Lucasarts adventure games. That being said, it’s the least user-friendly of the Sam & Max adventure games and the slowest. I still love it to bits and it’s important to the genre’s history imo.  

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (1993) $5.99 💕💀👿

“The adventure of Gabriel Knight starts with gathering materials for his new book, and ends up becoming a fight for his very soul. He must now face countless dangers in New Orleans, Africa and Germany, each bringing him ever closer to unraveling the mystery behind suspicious voodoo murders. Haunted by nightmares, he won't give up until he reveals the truth. “

Another Sierra game directed by a woman, Jane Jenson. Gabriel Knight, voiced by Tim Curry, is one of my favorite adventure game protagonists of all time. This game is scary and gory so enter at your own risk! I love the gameplay in this one, I love the narrator, I love the puzzles. But it seems Sierra games have some problems with the representation of minorities. The game is set in New Orleans and focuses on a voodoo cult. Which means consequently the game's major antagonists are all black. Unlike the Dagger of Amon Ra, Sins of the Fathers actually employed black actors to play black characters. There’s a lot to be said about the ways in which white media demonizes voodoo and those who practice it. If you play this one, remain critical. And for the love of god, don’t play the 20th anniversary version.

Day of the Tentacle: Remastered (1993/2016) $14.99 ✨👧❕

“Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world!“

Another classic LucasArts game! This was the first game co-headed by Tim Schaffer who would go on to make the outstanding Grim Fandango! This one is exceedingly wacky and the remastered version has made it more user-friendly than ever.

Toonstruck (1996) $9.99 💕

“Drew Blanc is a cartoon animator and the original creator of the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show.. Drew's boss, Sam Schmaltz, sets him the task of designing more bunnies to co-star in the Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun Show by the next morning. If you’re a fan of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? you’ll love this. Christopher Lloyd is Drew Blanc (ha) trying to save a cartoon world through inventory item puzzles. Truly wacky, zany, and ani-mainy. I played Toontown as a kid so I’m predisposed to like this one. This is also the only game with Full Motion Video I’m putting on the list because FMV games can be an acquired taste.

Grim Fandango (1996/2015) $14.99 💕✨

“Something's rotten in the land of the dead, and you're being played for a sucker. Meet Manny Calavera, travel agent at the Department of Death. He sells luxury packages to souls on their four-year journey to eternal rest. But there's trouble in paradise. Help Manny untangle himself from a conspiracy that threatens his very salvation.“

Yesssssssss! I LOVE Grim Fandango! The iconic game directed by Tim Schaffer has received the best remaster I’ve seen a point n’ click receive. I cannot recommend Grim Fandango enough! Stick with it through the forest section, trust me.

The Last Express (1997) $5.99 ❕ 📚

Ooooh I love a murder on a train! This game features rotoscope animation, which I love. Like The Colonel’s Bequest this game runs in real time, meaning the events of the game will unfold with or without you, depending on where you are at what time you’ll receive different information or see/miss different events. Very replayable with several different outcomes.

Sam & Max Save the World (Remastered) $19.99 💕

“ Sam is a six-foot canine detective with a love of justice. Max is a hyperkinetic rabbity-thing with a taste for mayhem. Together, they're the Freelance Police. And they're about to save the world.”

Sam & Max Save the World, originally released in episodes from 2006-2008 has been remastered and looks AMAZING! After LucasArts was shut down their game devs formed Tell Tale Games and produced three seasons of Sam & Max sequel games, all of which are great. But TellTale was shut down (and screwed over their employees) in 2018. Since then some of their devs have formed Skunkape Games and are currently remastering all of Tell Tale’s Sam & Max series (I’m thrilled). They’ve also adjusted some aspects of the game to make the game more inclusive and less **offensive. So imo it’s worth it to wait for the release of the other seasons to experience Sam & Max in pristine condition. Save the World is the only season out now, but you can get the non-remastered versions of Beyond Time and Space, and In The Devil’s Playhouse, here and here.

 **I should note the “offensive” material in the original is not as egregious as say, The Dagger of Amon-Ra, but it’s just a nice change to see especially in a game I hold dear.

We’re moving out of the 1990s now. Emerald City Confidential is the Wizard of Oz meets film noir. I played this as 13 year old and have revisited it as an adult and I still eat it up. Wadjet Eye makes consistently good adventure games so check this one out!

The Charnel House Trilogy (2015) $5.99 👧💀

Plays like Blackwell, has a Blackwell reference at the beginning, okay you got me. This is a good, if kinda short, game. It’s very creepy, involves murder and has some gore/violence so watch out! I’m still waiting on the sequel Owl Cave!

Okay I haven’t actually played this one, but I want to. Its a Wadjet Eye so you know it’s good. From the reviews I’ve seen this is the Blackwell Series meets Dragon Age. A point and click that incorporates RPG elements, I love that.

Do you get on Facebook every day?  Yeah pretty much all throughout the day. I used to never use it, like never ever; but back in college all announcements were coursed through Facebook so I was technically required to be on it regularly, and it was from there that I began to see memes and start to be more active. I’m a shitposter more than anything though and I rarely ever post stuff of my own. How many FB friends do you have?  I have 679 at the moment but I want to get rid of like 500 of them; it’s just such a long list to go through so I never get to proceed with my unfriending spree lol.

Have you ever been on a deleting spree?  HAHA I just mentioned that. I’ve always wanted to, but like I said 679 is already such an exhaustive list for me, and that’s considering I only started touching my Facebook in like 2019. I can’t imagine people who started Facebook in like 2009 and have 4000 friends aka most people I know.

Have you blocked a lot of haters?  I don’t have haters; at least I’m not aware of any that I have. Not that it’s something I care about at this point.

Do you get bullied online a lot?  No, but that’s also because I don’t really open the channels for people to send in hate. I don’t have Q&A handles like Curious Cat and I never pick out that option in Instagram where people can send in questions.

What's your favorite Facebook app?  Oh I never use Facebook for their apps. Are those still even a thing...? Anyway, I mainly go there to be on the hunt for stupid memes I can reshare or to watch videos that are either funny or informative.

Are you a fan of selfies?  I don’t mind if other people do it, but I think I’m honestly bad at selfies so I almost never take them. I’ve never figured out my angles or what filters look ok on me.

Has anyone ever called the police on you because they didn't like your status?  No but I have had my posts reported because they were deemed ‘offensive.’ Which is weird because my posts that have been taken down are those that speak out against disgusting men, which says a lot about Facebook runs their shit more than anything else.

Are you in any facebook groups?  I’m in nearly a hundred groups, both private i.e. for school purposes, and public.

Are you the admin of any groups?  Nah. Too much time and effort needed out of me.

People always seem to want to show off their best selves on Facebook and Instagram, so I’m actually kind of grateful that there is at least one social media out there where people can just be their clumsy, goofy selves.

How often do you tweet?  Probably a maximum of five a day. Nowadays I’m on there mostly to just scroll through my timelines.

Do you get on twitter every day?  Yes, both on my personal and fan account.

Did you have a myspace when you were in high school?  I started an account in like 4th grade when Myspace was ~big, but I didn’t find it fun and everyone my age was on Friendster anyway, so I was largely inactive.

Do you use myspace now?  No. Is it still even around? I have no clue.

Do you miss bulletins? I didn’t get to join in on the fun so there’s nothing to miss.

Did you like customizing your profile with the old myspace?  Not attributed to Myspace but I did have a lot of fun customizing my Multiply and Tumblr accounts back in the day. That was a period where I really got to learn and play around with HTML :)

Did you have music on your profile?  Not on Myspace again but I did on Multiply! I had a cute little playlist that played the songs immediately as soon as you landed on my page hahaha.

Did you learn HTML when you used Myspace?  Tumblr, yeah. I believe the skills are still there but I’ll definitely be a bit rusty.

Did you have a customized cursor?  Oh, no. Wasn’t a fan of those as I found them a bit tacky.

Did you have a Xanga account back in the day?  No. It wasn’t big here so I had never heard of it until I started taking surveys on here and heard people mentioning Xanga, actually.

Do you use snapchat?  I did; I was superrrrr active on there for a time. It kind of just got old at one point, though, and my feed got more and more dead until I too just left my account dormant altogether.

What is your favorite filter?  There were a lot of cute ones on there that helped me be more confident with taking selfies but my favorites have to be the dog and flower crown ones.

Do you understand Tumblr?  I had a better handle of it when I ran a fan account that required me to be more active; but now that I really just go on here to take surveys I just use the basic functions and nothing more. But yeah, I understand just enough to get by.

Do you use Tumblr?  Yeah. Even on the days I don’t post surveys, I regularly go on here to keep up with friends I like keeping up with like Elisabeth, Lane, Steph, Lina, Julie :)

What forum sites did you use to love that aren't around anymore?  There was one message board I frequented for this girly/tween magazine I used to collect, but I won’t share the name.

Are there any other great social media sites that you recommend?  I think this survey was able to cover all the main ones I use.

Do you use a photo editing site? If so, what?  I use apps instead of sites to edit my photos.

Um, so you're like a Tumblr god with writing, so do you have any tips on how to get your stories noticed and out there? Thank you!

ashdgfsdh that’s so!!!! nice!!!!! ty!!! so, to be totally honest, part of my situation is that I got really lucky with one of my fics early on, where it got like,,, a lot of notes and as such I ended up with way more followers but I can still try to give some tips!!!

(this got a little long, so I’m putting it under a cut)

1. Tagging

People (me included) will go through the Sanders Sides or character tags to find stuff to reblog. Only the first five tags you throw in will actually have your work in them (i.e. if you tag ‘1′, ‘2′, ‘3′, ‘4′, ‘5′, ‘6′, the fic will only show up when you search 1-5) and it won’t show up through searches at all if you use certain words (swear words, in particular, I’ve noticed).

Making sure to tag your stuff in a way that people will see definitely helps but also make sure it’s relevant tags. People looking for prinxiety won’t be thrilled to have analogical in the tag they’re searching. You can check my fics for the way I tag them if you want!

And, in relation to a different kind of tagging, use tag lists! I know there’s some general ones online (@the-taglist-repository has a bunch) but sometimes author’s will also just straight up tell you to tag them in stuff (e.g. I love being tagged in aspec or autistic sides content, @/rosesisupposes likes being tagged in superhero AUs, @/sleepless-in-starbucks demands /j to be tagged in all losleep content, etc. etc.).

I would be careful about just tagging people though. I’m, personally, not a fan of being tagged in things that I haven’t asked to be tagged in. It strikes me a little bit as ‘you’re a big blog so I’m just using your followers to try and promote myself’, even if that isn’t the intention.

2. Make content regularly

Now, I get that regularly putting out content is definitely not as easy as just saying you will—life gets in the way sometimes and creativity is stressful—but it definitely helped me when I started writing. I wasn’t doing much else with my time (an unusual circumstance), so I was putting out like,, at least 2 fics a month. In the entirety of last year I wrote 80 fics. But seriously, the more you write, the better your writing will be (practise!) and the more likely people will see it.

You can also try doing writing games like I’ve done for follower milestones in the past. You can find lists of prompts on tumblr, reblog them and ask people to send you a prompt and a ship for you to write a drabble for. There’s also things like Secret Santa (where people trade content for the holidays) and Soulmate September is this month, organised by @tsshipmonth2020! So participating in writing events that you find could also help!

3. Interact with other writers

The biggest thing, I think, personally, to help content creators is for them to work together to lift each other up (sounds kinda cheesy but I’m serious). If you comment on other people’s work telling them how much you enjoyed their fics, I guarantee they’ll be thrilled and you may become friends! (I’ve had,,, several friendships start this way; @/sleepless-in-starbucks and @/max-is-tired, among others).

And you can interact with writers outside of tumblr too! Discord is a super great way to chat with other writers and get your fics out there, I’ve found. There’s even some discord servers dedicated specifically to writing tss fanfics (@potestessemagishomosexualitatis has a great one that I’m in and ik there’s one run by discord user ‘parallelwrites’, though I’m not certain of their tumblr URL).

4. Write what you enjoy!

I guarantee people can tell if you’re writing stuff you’re not enjoying. You don’t have to write only the most popular ships to get notes on your writing (I mean, just look at Lia, who’s basically made their blog on the foundation of losleep). You should write the things you like, even if they’re niche, cause I promise if you want to read it, there’s other people out there who do as well.

I mean, I just read a qpr sleepxiety soulmate AU that the author (@averykedavra) described as ‘self-indulgent’. I’m a huge fan of platonic/queerplatonic sleepxiety but I never see it written! It’s not popular! But Avery wrote it and I loved it. I did not expect so many people to be thrilled about my aroace-Logan coming out story! I wrote it for Me but people really seemed to enjoy it! You never know what people will love.

5. Take care of yourself

This is maybe not so much writing advice as it is a caveat for all the stuff I’ve said here. At the end of the day, writing is fun and getting praise on your stories feels awesome, and I totally get that, but you gotta make sure not to burn yourself out. I went through a period when I started fic writing where I was,,,, a little too dependant on the feedback I got and if I didn’t get what I considered “enough notes” it basically sent me into a downward spiral.

Now, that’s me and I know not everyone will feel that way, but it’s good to remember you have worth outside of what you create. If you can’t manage to write the amount you think you “should” be, that’s okay. If you can’t manage to finish a piece you’ve been working on, that’s okay. If you go for months without writing because of stress, life or simply writer’s block, that’s all okay.

You are the most important thing in your creative endeavours; don’t forget that.
