you know, i really meant it when i said i'm not going to hold a knife to the throats of the people that are ultimately on my side. i don't hope that you suffer from the policies you've chosen to enable. i don't hope you "get what's coming to you" or any other disgusting thing i've seen people saying. i don't believe in punitive cruelty. i genuinely hope that, miracle of all miracles, trump's presidency somehow manages to be a net positive for everyone. i would love to have egg on my face about him. i don't want anyone to suffer and i'm not going to fight you.
but i'm also not going to take you seriously anymore either. so you didn't vote for kamala harris. okay. what did you do? did you vote for any of the ballot measures? any of the local elections? did you vote in the primary? in the midterms? any election at all? did you do any organizing or campaigning for any of the changes you want to see at all? did you go to a single town hall or city council meeting? are you subscribed to your reps' newsletters? what about your library's? did you go to a protest? have you contacted any of your reps about anything? via email? phone? written letter? fax? did you donate to a single cause–palestine, ukraine, the sudan, abortion funds, LGBT organizations, etc? have you done anything at all besides spread misery and gloat from your very tiny high horse that you are okay with sacrificing everybody's life, including palestinians, as long as you don't personally have to feel bad about it?
i haven't blocked you yet and i cropped your name out but i obviously know who you are. if you can provide a single shred of evidence that you personally have done any one of these things before the timestamp of whenever i end up posting this, i will give you my entire rent for november, no questions asked. you don't even have to use it to donate to a cause you clearly care so much about. you can spend it on candy. and i'm talking anything at all–did you donate a single dollar to esims six months ago? good enough. sign up for a newsletter relevant to your community? great! my rent is yours.
like i said, i don't wish you ill. but i am done treating political rubberneckers who criticize me for my imperfect triage as anything other than children throwing a tantrum. if you want to be taken seriously, fucking do something.

Courage is a Prerequisite
CW: Eddie being kinda a jerk to reader at first, Aged up Characters, reference to nude pictures, mostly fluff, no smut
Eddie Munson/You
Word count: 1615
⚔️ ⚔️ ⚔️
You found that cursed flyer in the Roane County Community College Library, tacked to the bulletin board.
You joined the group with some hesitation, but they were mostly cool.
Mostly dudes, quite a few graduates from Hawkin’s High, and a few current high school seniors. Including, your favorite - Dustin Henderson - the adorable little brother you always wished for.
Dustin was funny and welcoming and had a way of knowing (like magic) how to shut down arguments among the party. He was the social director for the group. Always throwing parties for everyone’s birthdays and organizing secret gift exchanges and creating sign up sheets for potlucks. He had a gift for getting people to be involved and do things.
Dustin could even influence the group’s Dungeon Master.
Eddie was 25 years old, a mechanic by day, a gifted lead guitarist every other Friday, an artist, whip-smart, and devastatingly hot but SOOOOO Annoying!!
Somehow Dustin had figured out how to make Eddie Munson (who absolutely still complained everytime) to come to these other events and on time and with his assigned snacks.
Eddie was respectful as a Dungeon Master but out of game, sometimes, he was just mean to you for no goddam reason. Sometimes he would be all teasy-flirty with you and then make fun of you if you flirted back.
The third session you attended maybe dressed up a bit (just to look cute) maybe a little to get his attention. Eddie looked you over and called you a ‘dirty slut’. He was ‘joking’ or whatever... when you got angry he said he meant the outfit looked hot (not you though - specifically your outfit) and he was “sorry for joking around” but ever since you had been holding this grudge...
Anyway - Dickish DM aside - the group was great.
⚔️ ⚔️ ⚔️
About two months into the current Campaign (and 2 dead characters - murdered by the dick DM in collusion with your bad die rolls), at the end of a long but admittedly exciting game night, everyone was packing up to go.
Jeff and Eddie were in a heated argument about who would win in a fight between Captain Kirk and Han Solo.
But you stopped listening to that silliness because Dustin approached you, “Can I ask for some advice?”
Aww - he came to you for advice. It warmed your heart that he wanted to open up to you about his worries. He was such a cutie-goober. Equal parts of both.
“Suzie’s mad at me,” he sighed.
“What’d you do?” You asked. Because little-dude was a Goober. And Suzie was pretty easy-going from what you could tell.
Dustin looked uncomfortable, and he near-whispered, “We were sending dot matrix converted pictures of each other - our school pictures - through web email and I asked if she would show me something... lower.”
“Dustin.” The rebuke in your voice was mild. As was the offense in your opinion. They’d been together (long distance) for years, you’d have asked for naughty pictures too in that situation.
You still clicked your tongue at him, though.
“I know, I know,” he took off his ball cap and ran his hands through his long curly hair, “... but I can’t help wondering... you know upstairs-outsidies is as far as we got at Camp Know Where and I said I want her to be my girl and she said ‘forever’ and so...”
“The ‘net is a wild place right now, man, that’s a crazy trust exercise for you to ask for! What if someone hacks in and takes the pictures?!” You shook your head at the audacity.
“Or my mom could find them printed out. I know, I know and I apologized and told her I'd keep my hormones in check - but I don’t think she’s forgiven me and she’s just so pretty and I love her - and I don’t want her to be mad at me anymore for being a stereotypical gross hornball dude.”
“I don’t think she’s mad at you for wanting to see her naked. I know she’s in that very religious *cough Cult* household but like Guys don’t have a monopoly on hormones and desire and shit.” You tapped your pencil with the troll eraser topper against your cheek pondering this... “Personally, I’d feel more comfortable mailing polaroids of my body than sending them in electronic mail. It feels safer...”
A familiar voice danced into your ears. “Oh, would you?? Is there a mailing list I should sign up for?” Of course DM Eddie was eavesdropping and interrupting players, his favorite pastimes.
“This is an A and B conversation, Munson, you can C your way out of it.” You snarked.
“I don’t think so, Sweetheart. Ya’ see - Dustin is asking for advice from You,” he narrowed his eyes and leaned in - it would be menacing if he wasn’t equal parts goofy and pretty - those freckles across his pretty face..., “ You - our newest member, and I’ve known Dustin longer - I’m gonna have a better understanding of his whole situation.” He cocked his head forward and his hair flew around - it was so stupid pretty.. .Annoying. It was so Annoying. “I’ve got seniority here, dollface.” he looked back and forth between you. “So what’s the situation?”
Dustin cleared his throat to start explaining but you forced a laugh and put up a finger in the air, “I wouldn’t ask Munson to advise me out of a wet paper bag.”
Eddie made a noise between a scoff and a hurt gasp but his eyes sparkled. “I would never give Dustin bad advice.” he looked at Dustin, “Didn’t I help you THIS session, to avoid pissing off that Djinni prince??”
“Of course you know the answers In Game when you are a Big Bad Serious DM.” You put your hands on your hips. “This is real life. Dustin doesn’t want to mess things up with Suzie.”
“Wait? Is Suzie a real person?” Eddie smirked. This was a common bit- the whole group (with yourself, Will, and Mike as the notable exceptions) teased Dustin about his long distance girlfriend not being real. Of course they hadn’t been in chat rooms with her like you had. She had a LOT of personality and no AI was that sophisticated...
yet.
Dustin didn’t even dignify the jab with a response. He just looked at you with pain in his eyes. “So, how do I make her forgive me?”
“You don’t.” You said. And both guys looked like you slapped their individual faces (!). “I mean, you can’t MAKE someone forgive you, Dustin! You need to be brave. You can only work to figure out what really happened, then apologize - a real apology that shows understanding of her feelings and concerns - and promise to do better. And I think she doesn’t want to hear you say you are ‘sorry for wanting to see her naked’ because that’s probably not what pissed her off and ... it’s not true, is it?”
Dustin nodded. “Yeah. Okay, okay, I can do that.” Clearly listening and processing this, “Hey - can I get a ride home?”
“I’d love to, Buddy, but my car is broken again.” You shrugged. “I biked.”
“What’d you do to her now??” Eddie groused.
“Nothing!! she’s just old.” You snapped.
“You need to do regular maintenance, I’ve told you this before - fer cryin’ out loud! Is the engine smoking again?” Eddie griped.
“Yes - Eddie! You Know I can’t afford regular oil changes. Not at the rate you recommend.”
Dustin cleared his throat. “Eddie, can you drive us both home?” He smiled with his little brother energy and Eddie replied,
“Of course, dude, grab your stuff.” And to you. “You coming?” All weird and stilted like he didn’t want to give you a ride and You’d Honestly Rather not impose and subject yourself to more of his BS, but It was Raining.
Eddie helped you heft your bike into the back of his van. He wouldn’t make eye contact with you though.
Dustin kept you both on safe-non-argument-inducing topics on the ride to his place. But then you were alone with Eddie. So it was inevitable that he would start some shit with you.
He licked his upper lip and turned towards you in the back. “Can you come up here, please, I’ll feel less like your chauffeur.”
“You’d make a terrible chauffeur.” You said conversationally as you got into the front and sank into the plush seat, crossing your arms over your chest.
Eddie looked like he was gonna start a fight with you again but then sighed, drooped, his hair falling in his face. “I’m... sorry.”
Did he just say that?? Really??
“I’m sorry I said you looked like a dirty slut.” His words were suddenly coming at you like a verbal deluge. Drowning you in sincerity?? He was capable of Sincerity?? “I’m sorry... that I said ... that I was joking. What I should have said is... I always think you look hot and it’s distracting sometimes when I’m trying to be a big bad serious DM, and you are in these tight jeans and shit and I don’t want... to fight with you anymore. I want us to be close. Like you and Dustin apparently are. Friends. If you can be friends with a guy who finds you attractive. Please. I’ll... I’ll do better.”
He turned toward you and his eyes were so big and pretty. His sexy lips were saying impossible things. Maybe you hit your head earlier and are currently passed out or this is a dream or...
“I promise. I can be a good friend. I can.” He sounded a tad unsure.
“Eddie, I can't just be friends with you. I’m into you. I’m totally bonkers crazy about you.”
“Oh.” For a moment he looked confused. Still sad. Contemplative.
And then the trademark smirk came back. “So, that means you want to be more than friends with me?”

I was going to post a out this jokingly, and this is still kind of for humor, but the more I thought about this the more I realized that it is something that could actually be dealt with here.
So. About a month ago I read Gideon the Ninth of The Locked Tomb series. And I enjoyed it. Necromancy in space with female leads and heavy influence from HomeStuck (at its moa generic base) is kind of a good recipe. It's not amazing, but I enjoyed it enough that I want to read the next book, Harrow the Ninth. But you see, there's a problem. I've been reading books through library recently. Because it's free. And I like free. And I have a very hard time with ebooks. I need physical copies. And my library (the entire county system) has 1 (one) copy of each of The Locked Tomb books. And I got the first one, no problem. But someone has the only copy of Harrow the Ninth presently.
And they have had it for at least nearly the entire loan period. As far as I know at least. I put it on hold just shy of 3 weeks ago. 3 weeks is the maximum loan duration for a book before renewal, which you cannot do if the book is on hold.
And it's annoying because the more I linger in the "wanting to read this book" zone the more I want to read it. It doesn't even have to be good, and I don't really expect to enjoy it based on everything I've heard.
So. Whoever it is. If you have a Tumblr. And if you see this. You better get it back in time. I think as of right now there's three days left. I know some people take time. Some people keep books out for the full loan duration just because they can. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that, to be clear. I'm not actually threatening anyone. I'm just really annoyed.
Of course, if it doesn't get back to the library I'm going to have to email the library and request they purchase more copies (which is a net good if they do). But still. I'm a very impatient person. Waiting is not my strong suit.

Ozpin: Name?
???: Evelynn Taurus. No middle name. I prefer to be called Eve.
Ozpin: Age?
Eve: 23.
Ozpin: Previous occupation?
Eve: Part-time at a local library, I offered private tutoring sessions as a secondary source of income.
Ozpin: And how long did you work there?
Eve: Three years at the library, I offered lessons after earning my GED. I was considered too old to enter traditional schooling by the time I realized how far back I was.
Ozpin: Hmm. Do you have any chronic or consistent injury or pain?
Eve: That's awfully bold to ask.
Ozpin: Many would consider allowing this interview to take place far beyond 'bold' given your brother. I only ask so that we may supply you with any assistance in case it acts up or hinders you beyond ability to perform.
Eve: ... An old, severe burn on my left shoulder. It acts up in extreme heat or under severe, unprotected acts of strength. Otherwise it will simply ache occasionally. Nothing major.
Ozpin: Thank you. you haven't noted a Semblance despite having register, custom weaponry and several years of active aura.
Eve: Sol's Suture, My semblance, makes it so any damage dealt to it occurs over a period of time, depending on how much a I focus on slowing it down - Though, the pain remains active the whole time.
Ozpin: Excellent. and your weapons?
Eve: Starting with Bloom; A shepherds Crook and Bolt-Action Rifle combination. The other is Pallor; a Hand-crossbow that can be infused with dust - though usually I just load nets or bolas into it. I don't like hurting people.
Ozpin: That's good to hear. this next question may be personal, or discomforting, but it is something I must ask anyone beyond our traditional Student's age.
Eve: Alright?
Ozpin: Are you willing to kill another to ensure the safety of your fellow Beacon Residents?
Eve: ... Adam is violent. He hates and hates, lashing out and causing pain because he has felt pain unjustly. He takes no joy in killing. He does enjoys the pain it causes.
Ozpin: And you Take no joy in either, do you? You would rather end needless pain and suffering, than draw it out?
Eve: I Would rather talk it out.
Eve: ... But in a place where I had no other choice to save another ...
Eve: Yes. Yes I would take another life.
Ozpin: another life?
Eve: ... Life is difficult on the road. Grimm, wild animals ... Bandits ... Those little villages where they think anyone that has more than human features should be slayed like a beast ...
Ozpin: *Placing a hand on her shoulder* You won't need to worry about that here. Should anyone of of your fellow students harass you for what you are or who you're related to, You may show them the difference between a life of fighting and a life learning to fight.
Eve: Fellow students .. You mean-
Ozpin: Congratulations Eve. You're cleared to take the Advanced Entry Quizzes and Tests. I will send you the dates over Email.
Eve: Thank you! Thank you Very much sir!

https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/william-gillis-one-giant-red-flag-folded-into-a-book
So much abuse is about trapping and monopolizing the target’s attention, feeling entitled to claim a chunk of their brain. The experience of being abused is often one of being forced into thinking about the abuser constantly, from trying to predict their acts to trying to follow the latest tangle in their proclamations. Abuse strips away agency by stripping away the capacity for the abused to think for yourself, to think about anything else or think at all. If the abuser controls critical needs then everything is devoted to trying to turn yourself into a complex key that can unlock those needs. If the abuser besieges and terrorizes you randomly, you form your brain into a vast prediction net, trying to preempt as best you can every single avenue by which they might strike. Or you huddle up and turn yourself off, turn your brain off, to try and weather through things like an inert object. All of these are about losing your capacity for agency in a way that extends beyond any physical constraints directly imposed upon you. Abuse takes over your brain.
Sometimes the abuser acts so as to not have to think about you, to terrorize you into smallness and confined predictability, but sometimes the abuser is themselves driven by their own ravenous attention on you and the need to make you dedicate that same level of attention to them. This sort of abuser is never more happy than when their provocations force you into direct immediate raw unthought emotional tangles with them. They yell and yell until you finally yell back, and then they grin in glee because they have you. Neither abuser can stand your escape to any degree, which they read as a direct assault on them.
There are many aspects of abuse, but abusers feel entitled to your attention.
I can’t emphasize this enough. Demanding that an ex listen to you, mobilizing The Community to force that ex to give you a monopoly over their brain is an abuser’s wet dream. It’s how thousands of accountability processes have derailed into an abuser continuously retraumatizing their survivor.
Schulman, it must be emphasized, has no argument for why we should be obligated to give away our attention to anyone who wants it. What she has instead is 1) a fixation on pain and suffering of those denied control over the attention of their targets, and 2) the repeated assertion that having no boundaries is “adult” whereas saying no is “childish.” Mature adults talk things out in person, only immature children—or those so traumatized and broken as to be infantile children—would draw a line around their attention and enforce it.
“In another example from other people’s lives, sometimes angry, supremacist, or traumatized people send emails commanding, ‘Do not contact me.’ I want to state here, for the record, that no one is obligated to obey a unidirectional order that has not been discussed. Negotiation is a human responsibility. Little children order their parents around: ‘Mommy, sit there!’ When adults give orders while hiding behind technology, they are behaving illegitimately. These unilateral orders do not have to be obeyed. They need to be discussed.”
It would be trivial to compose a little passage reversing the associations, casting knowing how to draw boundaries and assert one’s independence and agency as the “mature adult” position whereas being caught under the boot of others’ demands to the point where you can’t own your own associations or attention as the “child” experience. But I want to reject the entire adult supremacist frame she’s appealing to.
If the child often stomps their feet and declares “no”—no, I refuse to give uncle a kiss, no, I refuse to get dressed to be your marionette at an event, no, I refuse to listen to your lecturing—perhaps we should see that as an inspiring site of resistance by those most oppressed before they are ground down. Perhaps we should endeavor to be more like children desperately trying to assert their autonomy and consent as agents who get to choose. Certainly the world “adults” have built and perpetuated by beating each new generation into surrender is a clearly sickening and grotesque one.
Even though I personally have made choices to maintain some level of contact, I vehemently support every abused child who walked away from their parents and never answered their calls ever again. Hell, I support children who killed their abusers. You do not owe everyone a path for reconciliation and negotiation. From abusers to even just wingnuts and inane time burglars, the best option is sometimes to just walk away forever. We have limited time on this planet, why spend it trying to repair every single relationship you have so far happened into?
Schulman somehow cannot even fathom goals other than the maintenance of existing relationships.
“Refusing to speak to someone without terms for repair is a strange, childish act of destruction in which nothing can be won.”
Liberation can be won. There’s a world of possibility beyond the confines of one given relationship. Opportunity cost is a real thing that is worth considering. That nothing is gained in one specific relationship by walking away doesn’t mean that a world of possibilities can’t be gained through the absence and negation of that relationship.

Last summer I applied for a job as a library specialist in a small town outside Gainesville. As part of the application I had to go to the librsry in-person and take what was essentially a high school English test, "match these titles to their authors," "what was the main theme of XYZ," etc., really dry and pointless, but the final few questions were relevant to the library position and I absolutely aced them. "What should you do if someone comes in with a dog?" "How would you help a parent find a book for their child if they don't remember the title?" "How would you respond to teenagers playing loud music?" I answered professionally and thoughtfully, and they asked me to come back for an interview. I was told to prepare a children's book storytime presentation with props, so I made a backdrop and little popsicle stick puppets for Tacky the Penguin, my favorite picture book from elementary school.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a lot of fun crafting everything and practicing my read-through with funny voices.
Tumblr media
I colored in the final map, I just forgot to take a picture of it
Tumblr media
Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly, Perfect, and Tacky
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"We're going on a penguin hunt, we'll mark em with a switch, then we'll sell em for a dollar and get rich, rich, rich!"
Tumblr media
I absolutely bombed the interview. I was a nervous wreck, I kept stumbling over my words, I drew multiple complete blanks during their questions, and a lot of my answers trailed off into "well, yeah, you know what I mean..." Dumpster fire. 57 dead, 193 injured. I spent the next month dreading every single email I got because I was waiting to read the inevitable "unfortunately."
It was so much worse than that.
After enough time had passed I assumed they were simply going to ghost me, so I forgot about it and moved on, and then out of the blue they emailed me back with a form letter that began "dear sir or ma'am," which hurt a lot because I personally spoke to the hiring lady three times and all her other emails (including the form ones) had the courtesy to start with my name in all caps. They took the time to fill in the blank before, but not this time. Didn't even say "unfortunately," they were really blunt, "you were not chosen to move forward with the hiring process." Damn.
Well, I just moved back up to Gainesville and I saw that they county is still hiring for that same position at a different library that's closer to my apartment. I sent out a Hail Mary application thinking they'd reject me sight unseen, but they must have liked my cover letter because they want me to come back and take the test again. I don't remember every single question, but if it's anything like last year's I'll want to brush up on my English literature. I have to go in on Tuesday morning, so I have all weekend to study.
If I pass, they'll interview me again, and this time I hope they don't make me do another puppet show. My dad keeps making fun of me for it, like I just decided to bring puppets into it for no reason when they very specifically asked me to. It was one of the requirements. The word "puppets" was on the rubrick, but my dad acts like I'm mentally disabled, "dese are mah fwiends, dey gib me mowal suppowt, pwease n fank you!" Does he think I just choose to make puppets and bring them to job interviews for shits and giggles? Does he think I'm divorced from reality? Or is he just a heartless asshole who likes being cruel?
My old job paid me $15/hour for 31½ hours per week, $472.50 before taxes, around $420 take-home (88-89%). This library job offers $16.10 for a full 40 hours, $644.00 before taxes, around $570 net if they take out the same percentage. If I round down to 85% instead, I'd take home just shy of $550 per week, which is 131% of what I used to make. My rent is $600 per month, and my I qualify for $0 monthly payments on my student loans under the SAVE Plan, so I'd be flush with cash for once in my life and I'd have a job that doesn't make me want to kill myself!
This would be absolutely perfect! I really hope it works out this time. I know the gist of what they're going to ask me, so I'll be better prepared when it comes time to interview. Wish me luck.

The "small nonprofit school" saved in the SVB bailout charges more than Harvard
Tumblr media
There are no libertarians in a bank run. No sooner had venture capitalists whipped each other into a terrified Twitter frenzy at the imminent collapse of Silicon Valley Bank — a collapse caused by that selfsame frenzy — than the Ayn Rand-poisoned elite of Sand Hill Road started begging for Uncle Sucker to open the sluicegates:
https://twitter.com/EricNewcomer/status/1634300928621793283
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/23/small-nonprofit-school/#north-country-school
Now, on the one hand, it’s easy to dismiss these guys as very, very, very stupid. After all, they played a game of prisoner’s dilemma in which they were allowed to talk to each other as much as they wanted — and they still sold each other out:
https://newsletter.mollywhite.net/p/the-venture-capitalists-dilemma
But they still have the commonsense to realize that an America where $10k in student debt cancellation, school lunches for hungry children, and library budgets are out of reach, handing billions to a bank rescue a balance sheet overwhelmingly made up the investments of “high net worth” investors wouldn’t be popular.
After all, these guys have been crying about incipient guillotinism for years:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-08/billionaire-cartier-owner-sees-wealth-gap-fueling-social-unrest
Sure, they don’t compare small rises in the top marginal tax-rate to Kristallnacht anymore:
https://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2014/01/26/266685819/billionaire-compares-outrage-over-rich-in-s-f-to-kristallnacht
But they are locked and loaded for The Event, feathering elaborate subterranean, antipodean nests in the most luxurious bunkers New Zealand has to offer, against the day that the poors come to eat them:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/15/business/bunkers-new-zealand-intl-hnk/index.html
So amid the clamor for socialism-for-the-rich, these billionaires went on the hunt for average joes who could serve as the face of the bailout. Like the “Ohio mom with 4 kids and a husband who works in manufacturing, who owns a small business:”
https://www.businessinsider.com/mother-small-startup-ceo-fall-svb-not-1-problem-2023-3
She’s ex-McKinsey and raised $4m in VC for a $600/month life-planning app; her husband, another McKinsey alum, is a senior manager at a steel company (that is, he “works in manufacturing”).
Clearly, the ex-libertarian 0.01 percenters begging for relief needed to find someone else. Enter David Sacks, a billionaire Paypal mafiosi who waded into the debate with screenshots of an email from a “small, non-profit school” that would miss payroll if the bailout was not forthcoming:
https://twitter.com/DavidSacks/status/1636054055121453057
Sacks held this up as evidence that SVB’s depositors were “more diversified than the media narrative has allowed.” Sacks went on to claim that the bailout saved “innocent bystanders” like “teachers” from being “laid off.”
What is this small, nonprofit school? Writing in The American Prospect, Luke Goldstein sleuths it out: the “small, nonprofit school” is North Country School, an upstate New York boarding school where tuition runs $62k/year — more than Harvard or Yale:
https://prospect.org/economy/2023-03-22-david-sacks-bank-bailout/
North Country sounds like a great place to get an education. It’s got its own private ski-slope. The local city raised a $7m municipal bond on its behalf. There’s a rock-climbing range and horseback riding. The school emphasizes unstructured, outdoor education, with “farming, wilderness trips…even maple sugaring”:
https://northcountryschool.org/
Let’s be honest, this is the kind of education a lot of us dream of our kids having. No wonder that the alumna include numerous Rockefellers, and a scion of the Aga Khan family — claimed lineal descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.
As illustrious as the student body is, the trustees are even more gilt-edged. There’s a former Jpmorgan managing director, a former Google exec, Austrian nobility, the Welch’s grape heir and even JD Salinger’s kid. The chair ran a booze delivery company that sold to Uber. Together, they manage $30m in assets and raise $3m/year in donations, on top of $9m/year in revenues.
As Goldstein points out, it might be a lot to ask of the median small, nonprofit school trustee to investigate the soundness of the school’s bank. But these aren’t the median trustees of the median school. They’re raising millions from Vanguard and Fidelity and the JM Kaplan Fund. Perhaps it’s not asking too much that high-flying financiers craft a risk management plan for their deposits — or, you know, just have the nous not to stash all their money in a single bank account, diversifying their risk the way that any financial planner would tell them to do.
According to Sacks, if the FDIC had frozen SVB withdrawals, or imposed a 10 percent haircut on depositors with more than $250k in the bank, the “modestly paid workers who tend not to have a lot of savings to fall back on” who worked at the school would have been out in the cold. But with donors on tap who give $50,000 at a pop, it seems likely that the trustees could have tapped someone for a bridge loan.
It’s doubtless true that there are low-waged, precarious workers who would have been out in the cold if the FDIC hadn’t stepped in, but the wealthy “investors” who clamored for the bailout spent the last several years consistently, brutally, loudly calling for an end to covid relief, no student debt cancellation, and cuts to public services. The idea that they were worried about saving the janitors and receptionists of Silicon Valley strains credulity:

You can’t be on record calling for tech billionaires to “Sharpen your blades boys 🔪” ahead of mass layoffs and also claim to be a champion of the middle-class:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/21/tech-workers/#sharpen-your-blades-boys
As Goldstein writes, “David Sacks couldn’t find a mom-and-pop institution to justify his cockeyed version of reality without turning to a VC colleague’s ultra-rich boarding school.” There might be mom-and-pop institutions on the SVB balance-sheet, but David Sacks evidently doesn’t know any of them.
New York State is a good place to be a Silicon Valley banker. For one thing, the Southern District of New York is an exceptionally nice place to be a bankrupt billionaire, which is why SVB’s investors now claim that their headquarters are at 387 Park Ave, 2,951 miles from the Santa Clara HQ the company listed on all its filings:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/18/2-billion-here-2-billion-there/#socialism-for-the-rich
In New York, elite boarding schools get federal rescues, so long as they can claim some nexus with SVB. But, as Goldstein writes, NY city and state schools are in outright financial crisis, with no aid in sight. The State University of New York system is drowning in debt. NYC schools are about to bring down massive layoffs, having lost $469m out of their budgets:
https://comptroller.nyc.gov/newsroom/testimony-of-new-york-city-comptroller-brad-lander-to-the-new-york-city-council-committee-on-education-on-resolution-283-2022-to-immediately-reverse-doe-reductions-to-school-budgets-for-fy-2023/
The FDIC stepped in to rescue SVB, claiming that it wouldn’t cost the public anything — instead, the money would come from increases in the entire bank system’s insurance premiums. But as Adam Levitin writes for Credit Slips, banks “will pass those premiums through to customers because the market for banking services is less competitive than the market for capital…higher costs for increased insurance premiums are likely to flow to the least price-sensitive and most ‘sticky’ customers: less wealthy individuals”
“So average Joes are going to be facing things like higher account fees or lower APYs, without gaining any benefit. Instead, the benefit of removing the cap would flow entirely to wealthy individuals and businesses. This is one massive, regressive cross-subsidy.”
https://www.creditslips.org/creditslips/2023/03/the-regressive-cross-subsidy-of-uncapping-deposit-insurance.html
Nothing about this bailout intrinsically protects anyone’s job. Yes, if the companies that banked with SVB went under, they’d have fired everyone. But tech companies are firing everyone anyway, 280,000 and counting, in profitable companies where they do stock-buybacks big enough to pay every worker’s salary for the next quarter-century:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/21/tech-workers/#sharpen-your-blades-boys
I’m kickstarting the audiobook for my next novel, a post-cyberpunk anti-finance finance thriller about Silicon Valley scams called Red Team Blues. Amazon’s Audible refuses to carry my audiobooks because they’re DRM free, but crowdfunding makes them possible

[Image ID: A vast castle surrounded by a stately brick wall bearing an ornate gilt-framed sign reading 'Small, non-profit school,' in gothic lettering. Atop the wall is a caricature of Humpty Dumpty, looking distressed. He has a SVB logo over his chest. He is being restrained by tiny, top-hatted bankers.]

Okay so it's a great day to go see if something like Khan Academy or other freebie learning zone has a Computer Networking 101. Turns out KhanAcademy.org is still free for now. I'm sure it mines the hell out of your data like anything else. I use one of my like 10 google logins. Did you know you didn't used to have a phone number to get a gmail address? There are still some e-mail services that don't require phone numbers, though they have different limitations and uses. Becoming a suite was quite another magnitude for a login. Anyway, someone tag me if we need the article on Other Email Services. https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/basics-computer-networking/ ^This doesn't require a log in. I'm probably going to try to find a couple amusing videos. Like probably from youtube, unless I can find something on vimeo or the fediverse. A lot of this is learning how the internet goes. It teaches The Names and Commands of The Internet. Sort of like programing languages like C(++++?) and Python are Vocabulary and Grammar for Taming Your Processor. I'll reblog with more related links as I add to my Updated Study Library. My current aims include: > getting competent in basic LAN and internetwork administration > continuing to munch on html and CSS -- //Every time I get used to a service, it disappears or monetizes out of my budget or fills up with ads until it stops working.// I think I can make an ugly tack board and file server for my household. Also it's really satisfying -- like painting with puzzle pieces. > web hosting so there is somewhere to put it > uh taking screenshots and making posts about better net navigation and building skills to improve awareness? And of course: https://www.myabandonware.com/browse/theme/typing-29/ A bunch of typing games so old that no one cares. If you're willing to go with lowtech graphics to skip modern spyware and webtracking, it's honestly a fun little ride. Learning to type physical conditioning. However you make 15-30 minutes almost every day good and fun for yourself. (Sometimes 2d alien fun for points is enough, ya?) Yeah, those are for windows. Most macintosh users these days can maybe blow a few currency on a indie app, eh? Linux users -- you already know how to use freeware and honestly I'm not expecting to be read by a lot of linux users on this thread. (@ me for linux introductions ig too) Android? Basically in the same app boat as mac... Shout up for android power user info, like sideloading but... I haven't been browsing the indie APKs or the flash community in ages.
And uh, get a keyboard. bluetooth is fine for a while and better for someone trying to start this kind of project on a phone or a tablet. If someone is sticking to typing games for a few weeks or several, it might be worth considering getting a corded keyboard -- Anyone who is topping over 45wpm and heading for 60+ will find that bluetooth keyboards may not keep up with that leveled up meat input. (I can type around 90wpm or so when I'm on a roll and get frustrated pretty quickly.) Most Importantly: SAVE YOUR PROGRESS (u matter), & Look It Up before you Give It Up.
another thought about "gen z and gen alpha don't know how to use computers, just phone apps" is that this is intentionally the direction tech companies have pushed things in, they don't want users to understand anything about the underlying system, they want you to just buy a subscription to a thing and if it doesn't do what you need it to, you just upgrade to the more expensive one. users who look at configuration files are their worst nightmare

With the advent of social media, a lot of companies have put email marketing on their back burners. While they still use email campaigns, their analytics have shown that emails are being kicked to spam folders or simply deleted without being opened. The issue is not that email campaigns are no longer effective; the issue is that email campaigns need to be based on sound strategies and tactics that result in recipients wanting to open them, read, and take some kind of further action. When those sound strategies are incorporated, businesses of all sizes can achieve good results. Here’s why: People check their emails, at least several times a day. Targeted emails with great subject lines and offers of value have a good chance of being opened and responded to. Studies do show that email marketing results in better conversion rates than social media communication. Businesses have more control of distribution with email marketing than they do with social media. Instead of casting out a wide net hoping to attract a few, email marketing services now allow multiple lists based upon recipient positions in the sales funnel. Email is personal, and establishing personal connections with target audiences is key to ultimate sales. And given that a variety of messages can be crafted for subsets of an email list, personalization is easy to achieve. It’s not dependent upon a target being online at the time something is posted. Results are easier to track, including who opened and who did not. Email marketing services offer many templates so that a marketer choose a design, color palette, etc. best suited for his/her targeted audience. Email, then, remains one of the most important digital marketing trends, can be designed to appeal to specific audiences and can be tracked. Now the other component of the strategy will be finding the right email service and templates. Here are 25 sites from which you can download free email templates. Weber You have access to all templates for 30 days free. There are some great templates here with a drag and drop editor. Litmus.com Litmus has secured 7 free email templates from Stamplia. Templates are responsive and fully tested for all servers. Each template comes with a PSD source file, so you can tweak them as you wish. Cake Mail If you are a small business, you can begin to use any of these email and newsletter templates for free, up to 500 contacts, with no limit on how many per month. Once you get beyond 500 clients/customers, you will need to join a monthly or annual plan based upon your growth.
Dear,My name is Imrane, and I'm an architecture student at KU Leuven University, Belgium. I am currently working on a project that involves creating a perfect copy of the Archigram, no. 1 (https://www.jstor.org/stable/community.30241805), and I would be grateful for your assistance.I understand that Archigram's publications were produced with a DIY approach, using affordable materials such as newsprint or low-quality offset paper due to their limited resources at the time. However, I would appreciate confirmation on the exact type of paper used for the original broadsheet, as well as the precise dimensions. This information is essential for the accuracy of my project, and I would be very grateful if you could provide me with those details or direct me to where I might find them.Thank you very much for your time and assistance.Best regards,ImraneArchitecture StudentKU Leuven University
Hi Imrane, We were forwarded your message regarding Archigram. We will pull this issue and get back to you in the coming days. Thank you for your patience, Dylan
Hi Dylan, I hope this email finds you well. I wanted to kindly follow up on my inquiry regarding the Archigram Broadsheet No. 1. I fully understand that this may require time to gather, but as my project deadline is approaching, this information has become quite urgent. I would greatly appreciate any updates you might have. Thank you again for your time and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Kind regards, Imrane
Hi Imrane,
Apologies for the late reply!
Archigram 1, sheet 1; [link] is 33.02 cm H by 20.6 cm W
Archigram 1, sheet 2; [link] is 33.02 cm H by 39.5 cm W
I am not a paper expert, so I can't provide information about the exact type of paper. By feel, the first sheet is similar to modern printer / copy paper, the second sheet is a little thicker but not as thick as cardstock. This article from Harvard's Graduate School of Design might be helpful for your project.
Best, Dylan

America disproportionately funds crime response and the military because oil and destabilizing economies are great motivators for war for the money-and-profit-is-priority country.
The prison industrial complex is modern day slavery, using the system to imprison poor people and poc for petty crimes (if you don't believe it why do rich white pedophile syndicates get away with trafficking children but black teens get charged as adults and sentenced the maximum sentence for possessing recreational amounts of Marijuana) and then making them work without pay as a condition of their sentence.
The military industrial complex starts wars in territories that have nothing to do with the us, all for the profit, and then they don't even give their vets a pension and social safety net when they come back disabled and traumatized from fighting a greedy rich white bastard's war.
If the us defunded police and the military, they could house the homeless (there are supposedly more empty houses than homeless people in the US), increase access to quality education, increase access to Healthcare and other public services, and decrease the cost of living. Do you know the effect of doing these things? LESS CRIME!!!! An educated, fed, housed and cared for population won't need to resort to petty crime to survive. If more public funding went to just libraries alone, all the benefits mentioned before will happen, but so will a decrease in unemployment.
You can research, draft and with the help of librarians perfect a CV, and print it, and then you can find a job easier than when you didn't have a CV. You can check emails at the library, get help with schooling, or just get a warm place to hang around in in the winter if you're homeless. (if you think homeless people hanging around in a library is bad go reconsider your life experience and learn and grow. If they're not actively damaging property or like, actually harassing, not asking for help just genuinely treating other patrons badly, they deserve to be there just as much as you. Your feelings about their presence don't matter. Go fuck yourself).
Libraries provide kids with education support where schooling fails because of poor government funding in *certain* areas (areas that aren't majority white middle class homeowners). Study groups, reading resources, internet, printing, all resources that improve a child's chances of getting a good education and being able to achieve more with a little support. A kid that's educated and working doesn't need to steal food or sell drugs to survive.
So like even if you took a fraction of the military budget and ONLY put it into public libraries, you'll see a society that's more educated, with a lower unemployment rate, more productive, and as a result more profitable, which imo that last one shouldn't be the motivator for caring for your citizens but I am talking mostly about capitalist America and I know my audience.
Defund the police. Fund public libraries.

Step-by-Step Shopify Migration: A Comprehensive Tutorial for Beginners
Tumblr media
Migrating your online store to Shopify can seem daunting, especially for beginners. However, with a detailed and structured approach, you can smoothly transition your e-commerce business to this powerful platform. This guide will take you through each step of the migration process, ensuring you understand and execute each phase effectively.
Why Migrate to Shopify?
Shopify is renowned for its user-friendly interface, extensive customization options, and reliable performance. Migrating to Shopify allows you to leverage these features to enhance your online store’s functionality and customer experience.
Preparing for Migration
1. Assess Your Current Store
Before starting the migration, conduct a thorough assessment of your current store. Identify the data that needs to be transferred, such as product listings, customer information, order history, and website content. This will help you create a comprehensive migration plan.
2. Back Up Your Data
Backing up your data is a critical step. Export all necessary data from your current platform, ensuring you have copies of product details, customer records, and order history. This backup will serve as a safety net during the migration process.
3. Choose the Right Shopify Plan
Shopify offers various plans tailored to different business needs. Evaluate the features of each plan and choose one that aligns with your business requirements and budget. Consider factors like the number of products, staff accounts, and additional features you may need.
Setting Up Your Shopify Store
1. Create a Shopify Account
Go to the Shopify website and sign up for an account. Follow the prompts to enter your store details, including your store name, address, and contact information. This will create the foundation for your new online store.
2. Customize Your Store’s Design
Choose a theme from Shopify’s extensive library that best represents your brand. Customize the theme by adjusting colors, fonts, and layout to create a unique and engaging storefront. Ensure that your design is consistent with your brand identity.
3. Import Your Data
Use Shopify’s data import tools to transfer your data from the old platform. Shopify supports various data formats, making it easier to import products, customers, and orders. Ensure that the data fields are correctly mapped to avoid discrepancies.
Optimizing Your Shopify Store
1. Optimize Product Pages
Product pages are critical for driving sales. Ensure each product page has a unique, keyword-rich title and description. Use high-quality images and provide detailed product information. Incorporate customer reviews to build trust and credibility.
2. Implement SEO Best Practices
Shopify has built-in SEO features that can help improve your store’s visibility on search engines. Optimize meta titles and descriptions for all pages. Use descriptive URLs and ensure your site structure is logical and easy to navigate. Create a sitemap and submit it to search engines.
3. Develop Quality Content
Content is key to SEO success. Develop a content strategy that includes regular blog posts, how-to guides, and other valuable resources. Use relevant keywords throughout your content to improve search rankings and engage your audience.
Integrating Apps and Tools
1. Choose Essential Apps
Shopify’s App Store offers a range of applications that can enhance your store’s functionality. Identify the apps that are essential for your business operations, such as inventory management, email marketing, and customer service tools. Integrate these apps to streamline processes.
2. Utilize Analytics Tools
Integrate analytics tools like Google Analytics to gain insights into customer behaviour, traffic sources, and sales performance. Use this data to make informed decisions and optimize your marketing strategies.
3. Set Up Payment Gateways
Shopify supports multiple payment gateways, allowing you to offer various payment options. Choose the gateways that are popular among your target audience and ensure they are securely integrated into your store to enhance the customer experience.
Testing and Launching Your Shopify Store
1. Test All Features
Before launching, thoroughly test your Shopify store to ensure everything functions correctly. Test product pages, the checkout process, payment gateways, and integrations. Address any issues to provide a seamless experience for your customers.
2. Plan Your Launch
A successful launch requires careful planning. Create a launch plan that includes marketing strategies to generate buzz and attract customers. Utilize email marketing, social media, and other channels to announce your new store and offer promotions.
3. Monitor Post-Launch Performance
After launching, closely monitor your store’s performance. Use analytics tools to track key metrics like traffic, conversion rates, and sales. Gather customer feedback to identify areas for improvement and make necessary adjustments.
Conclusion
Migrating your store to Shopify can greatly benefit your e-commerce business by providing a robust and scalable platform. By following this comprehensive tutorial, you can ensure a smooth transition and leverage Shopify’s features to drive growth and success.
