"You got married at some point" "Sure" "Do you remember it?" "Probably" "Yes, but do you? Like if I asked you when it happened, or where you were, could you tell me?" "No, but I can logically deduce that since I remember grieving over a dead husband, I did at some point get married to have a husband and that's probably the person I got married to"
It means playing detective with your own life, every day to mask it.
In my own personal experience, this is closer to how memory loss actual functions: You experience a collapse of connecting context so the emotional cue remains but the origin of the cue is obfuscated.
It goes beyond transience memory loss, which is just naturally forgetting stuff over time which tends to be temporary and becomes a real origin of cognitive impairment.
Imagine knowing you should or shouldn't do something, but having no idea why, and when you try to remember, there's just this deep feeling of dread or that a horrible thing is going to happen to you in the future.
This emotional state actually has a symptomatic name -- "sense of impending doom".
The brain works by finding contexts, and stitching them together with justifications based on your own internal states. When you reason or think, this happens in a recursive loop until you have the level of precision or fidelity or detail you need -- like a render-pass when someone is painting.
This is something everybody does and almost nobody is consciously aware of it, until you've had an experience (be it through trauma, disruption, etc) which makes you aware of the process happening - and even then, you aren't always aware of it.
When I experience memory loss at least, what happens is the gap that the justification has to string together is too big and so my confidence in the result drops. You can think of it as "not having enough slack in the rope" which limits the size of the web I'm able to form with certain experiences, memories or contexts.
This means I can't go as deeply into an experience as others may, or may entirely forget it even happened. Sure I can still hear emotionally "the sound" made on the other side but I can't go there and see what's making that noise.
Stress shortens the amount of rope I get. Prompts, reminders, and friends can help me cross gaps I can't cross alone.
But its enough to disrupt my natural functioning.
A good example is I can't contextualize how time functions properly.
Every moment in the past feels equally far away from me, whether it is from a long time ago, or a short time ago. I don't have the knot-work in my rope to string those feelings and those experiences together.
When this comes up in the context of say, social appropriateness (eg, if its ok to do something when the social statute-of-limitations has expired, or when something has taken too long to do, etc) that's an immediate fail on my part.
Everything feels like it happened 100 years ago. Everything feels like it happened yesterday.
The closest to approximating this I can get is listening to music, which can take me back to a different time and help me remember things connected to the context of the music itself.
In more abstract tasks, like remembering specific days, I either have haunting levels of unwanted clarity, or someone painfully reminds me of something really important that I have absoloutely no awareness of.
Spontaneously I'll talk about something I was involved in quite recently, or that's ongoing and people involved will look around at me like I'm a crazy person.
I then have to stop and think.
That thing happened in the early 2000's.
It made history. It changed an entire generation. It saved lives, and it disrupted a major cult. It mutated into a political organism, that in retrospect, probably ruined an entire generation of men, which wasn't our intention at all.
And I'm talking about it like its a dinky pet project website, which is at best a curiosity and a place to post silly pictures.
And now my friends who I've known for maybe five or six years are looking at me like they've just seen an actual unicorn.
And then I look around, glancing at the hallway wondering where my husband is.
And then I feel there's no ring on my finger.
I look at my right hand, the paralyzed finger.
I remember I slammed a knife into the kitchen counter out of saturation, pleading with him to stop abusing his medication.
My hand shot down the knife, but my grip didn't loosen. The inertia cut the tendon in my right hand's pinkie finger, rendering the final joint completely unusable.
Then I remember he died three months after that of an overdose.
And that, I only know about things like this because I obsessively journal, to try and make up for how at the end of my rope I am.
Pausing, looking at the text-field, I remember this probably isn't socially appropriate to share this.
I write a few more lines.
I'll say what I'm writing is just well researched fiction. That whoever's reading this doesn't need to feel bad about something which I'll insist, did not happen.
I tell myself I'll delete the post in a few days, maybe a few weeks for the sake of privacy, marking it accordingly.
And now I'll click reblog.
Enough of the trope where memory loss undoes the damage or the corruption or whatever. More content where removing memories just removes the context.
The tragedy of needing to grieve and not knowing what or who you lost or why. The angst of having trauma and being denied the awareness that it's trauma. The suspense of being different somehow and left to wonder how and when. The tension of knowing that something is off and you can't find where it hurts. The Adventure Zone gets it. Kingdom Hearts gets it.
There is an aching inside you and you don't know how it got there.

Introducing SavvyDissent
Friends, it's time (I'm sorry to say) to bring back the chain e-mail, the reply all, and the mass text. Security and safe use of the internet just became critical.
I hope you will (securely) spread it through your social circles in person, or by secured email or text.
We're all in shock from the election, and we're all wishing we could do something. Protests and resistance will increase over the next years. My hope, and my advice, is that we take the threat seriously. You (and I) are not overreacting; they tell us their plans. Trump promised at the beginning of this campaign way back in 2023 to overhaul the federal government into his personal bureaucracy. He specified that will include surveillance departments.
This is real, and it's critical to understand the the US is not immune to fascism and authoritarianism. American exceptionalism is a dangerous lie. With the technology we have now, the rise of fascism will look radically different that our historical imaginations conjure, and the administration will be very different than his 2016-2020 presidency.
The 2016 Trump was chaotic and vague, and even then he left destruction in his wake. Now, the far-right have had years to organize for a second Trump regime.
They have concrete plans they didn't have before. Trump is less coherent now, but he's surrounded by people with purpose and competence that in he didn't have in his first administration. His health is declining fast, and JD Vance is potentially even worse ideologically. The Trump administration will likely involve RFK, Jr. and Elon Musk, both of whom are extremely dangerous.
Audaciously, the richest man in the world has warned us to expect austerity. He's in a position to become Trump's propagandist (and has played the role already.)
The Heritage Foundation, an extreme Chisto-fascist organization, are the architects of this coming regime. Their agenda in Project 2025 should terrify us. One of my only sources of hope is that it seems Trump/MAGA are telling us their plans. That advantage is lost when we don't believe them.
We need to accept some harsh truths, and one of these is that social media is not the place for a resistance movement.
It is not our friend or ally; it is demonstrably dangerous. Learning this is part of the mission inherent in the popular phrase, "Don't obey in advance." Don't hand them your information. The CEOs of the major sites are collaborators--they helped manifest this outcome, and they've already demonstrated their willingness to help quell dissent (your photos are used in face-recognition software to identify protesters) and aid the police in hunting down and arresting abortion patients.
We have to rethink organizing, and we have to do it securely.
I must stress that Trump has included leftists (by which he means even moderate liberals and democrats) in his speech about "the enemy within." Even if we are white, Christian, cisgender, straight, and able-bodied, he has declared us the enemy.
Each of us has a decision to make. We either become publicly dissident--risking personal safety to a degree we can't know--or we wage our opposition in the safest way possible.
Social media? They're cops. If we are going to have any hope of staying safe and organizing, we must accept this truth.
We must assess the risk of posting our affiliations and circulate petitions and direct actions on the public web. Most of us are easily identified where data miners and AI can detect this information. For the most part, that's out there, permanently. When you delete an account, the company retains copies of your data.
I am not a security expert, but I have some beginner tips for safer communication.
● Download an end-to-end encrypted messenger app and stop using SMS texting and social media DMs. I recommend Signal or Discord, but would not trust WhatsApp, as it's owned by Meta.
● Look in to data removal services like DeleteMe or Incogni; these will help your reclaim as much of your data.
● Turn off your phone's location tracking.
● Install a VPN and sign up for a secured email. Proton Mail and storage are good; Gmail and Google Drive are the enemy. A VPN (virtual private network) hides your IP address that would otherwise out your location and other info.
● There are cheap anf free options for VPNs and you can find secure email free.
● Install TOR or other secured browsers. Chrome especially is a security nightmare. Incognito or private browsing on your regular browsers is not a safe option.
● Reject site cookies and use best practices for password security.
● Don't make plans online. Circulate information directly using these secure practices. If you volunteer or join protests or see calls to action on public social media, talk with the organizer to urge a move off social media.
● If you attend a protest, read into Black Bloc tactics for anonymity and health/safety, or at least wear a face-obscuring mask. Police have already used face-matching software to arrest protesters in the US.
● Speaking of masking, follow Covid protocols. Our health system will be gutted soon and any measures to prevent communicable disease are going to be on us. (Vaccines could be banned; the CDC eroded even further.) There are dangerous flu strains as well- please take precautions.
● Disable face recognition or thumbprint logins on your phone. Currently the cops are allowed to use these to access your phone, but they can't force you to give them the PIN or pattern drawing. Be aware that could change.
● If you are trans, discuss privacy concerns with your doctor.
● Along that vein, if you're seeking an autism diagnosis *and your level of support needs can be met without it* rethink having your neurodivergence documented. The fate of disabled folks is precarious, and authoritarian/fascist movements are dangerous for us. I'm not sure if ADHD or other neurotypes are at risk, but there is historical precedence for autistics and other divergent people to be targeted.
● Protect each other: Do not out trans, queer, racialized, or any other vulnerable people in your friends groups. Note that includes any pregnant person--Whether you're excited your best friend is having another baby or your kid sister is late for her period, keep that offline. (For the love of all that's holy delete your period trackers.)
● If you know travel plans for someone to travel or move to a safer blue state, you shut the fuck up about it.
If you have further knowledge about privacy and security, add it when you forward this to friends.
I'm planning for this to become an anonymous zine/newsletter where we can distribute info under-the-radar communications network. To opt in to occasional newsletter posts,
email "add me" to [email protected], visit tumblr.com/savvydissent message via Discord or Telegram @savvydissent
Print & distribute on paper.
Share this with your contacts, and circulate it safely. Please message me to share any direct actions, mutual aid organizing, or any relevant info you want to spread. Please take good care of yourself.

i both love Chappell Roan's music and am the type of person who is concerned about privacy(mostly for myself but I digress). I really hope that she uses a service like incogni or DeleteMe to clean up any stalkable info on her/her family.
yeah same i love chappell and im concerned about her privacy. these freaks found where her sister works which is genuinely messed up. someone followed her mom out of yoga. the fact that she is afraid to release new music or do anything super public because of some of her fans is disgusting. i really hope she can keep herself and her family safe and these psychos get a grip on reality

Hello Heather!
I have a question partially inspired by a post you made that made me laugh maniacally
If DH00 (or any slenderseries for that matter) was going to have a sponsor segment like most youtube videos.. which sponsor would dh00 have? also which do you think other shows will have?
I think DarkHarvest00 would use DeleteMe so they can stop relying on Jeff Benson to fix their online presence and keep them safe.
As far as the other ones, I think BetterHelp would do a lot of them good

Such is life! Behold, a new Post published on Greater And Grander about 5 Ways to Protect Yourself and Your Privacy Over the Next Four Years
See into my soul, as a new Post has been published on https://greaterandgrander.com/5-ways-to-protect-yourself-and-your-privacy-over-the-next-four-years/
5 Ways to Protect Yourself and Your Privacy Over the Next Four Years
Tumblr media
In an era of increasing digital surveillance, political targeting, and online harassment, protecting your privacy is more important than ever. Whether you are an independent artist, activist, journalist, or creator using compelling visual content to advocate for change, safeguarding your digital and personal security should be a top priority. Here’s how you can take action now to protect yourself over the next four years.
1. Secure Your Digital Footprint
Your online presence is your brand, but it can also be a vulnerability if not managed carefully.
Use Strong, Unique Passwords – Implement a password manager like 1Password or Bitwarden to generate and store complex passwords.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) – Activate 2FA on all social media, banking, and email accounts to add an extra layer of security.
Review Privacy Settings – Regularly update privacy settings on social media and other online accounts to control what information is publicly available.
Consider Alternative Platforms – Diversify your digital presence across multiple platforms in case of deplatforming or sudden changes in terms of service.
Go Directly To The Slide Deck Of What You Need To Know
2. Protect Your Financial and Legal Standing
Creators and activists are increasingly facing politically motivated financial and legal pressure. Prepare yourself with these steps:
Separate Personal and Business Finances – Establish an LLC or a separate business entity to protect personal assets from potential lawsuits.
Maintain Detailed Financial Records – Keep thorough records of income, donations, and expenses to avoid discrepancies in audits or funding investigations.
Secure Legal Representation – Have a legal contact or join an artist/activist legal defense network before you need one.
Consider Alternative Funding Sources – Explore decentralized and privacy-focused funding options such as cryptocurrency, Patreon alternatives, or donor-advised funds.
3. Strengthen Your Cybersecurity Measures
With rising cyber threats, a few key precautions can save you from data breaches, doxxing, and hacking attempts.
Use Encrypted Communications – Utilize Signal, ProtonMail, or other encrypted messaging and email services.
Regularly Update Software – Keep all devices and apps updated to prevent security vulnerabilities.
Browse Anonymously – Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and privacy-focused browsers like Brave or Tor to reduce tracking.
Monitor Your Digital Identity – Set up Google Alerts for your name and use services like DeleteMe to remove your personal information from data broker sites.
4. Prepare for Smear Campaigns and Deplatforming
If you’re an outspoken advocate or creator, you may become a target of bad-faith actors trying to silence you. Be proactive:
Own Your Content – Have a personal website where you control your messaging and content, separate from social media platforms.
Develop a Crisis Plan – Outline steps for responding to false accusations, copyright strikes, or mass reporting attacks.
Diversify Your Content Distribution – Cross-post content to multiple platforms to reduce dependency on any single one.
Engage With Trusted Networks – Build relationships with aligned organizations and audiences that can support you if targeted.
Why Greater & Grander Media Services is Your Best Defense
Navigating the next four years will require resilience, strategy, and high-quality, compelling visual content to stand out and make an impact. Of all the little indignities late stage capitalism offers, the one I am most fed up with right this second is the idea that we know having your data harvested and sold is a bad thing for the general public, but rather than just making it illegal to sell people's names, addresses, marital status, purchase history, etc, instead of making that just not a thing its legal to sell, we have laws (we in this case being the united states of america) that require companies to delete the information they have on you if you ask them to do so. And so of course there are thousands of these companies with this information so its more or less impossible for a normal person with a fucking job to keep on top of this so there is also a whole fucking industry dedicated to charging you a subscription fee to make these requests for you. And I have no proof that those companies are owned by the same fucks who own the data companies, but what I'm saying is if I see another ad for deleteme or incogni or whatever I'm going to fucking shit.
Someone who's work I'm very found of once said, I'm probably paraphrasing, "Capitalism doesn't solve problems, it monetizes them." And yeah. and fuck capitalism for that.
