I saw a video on the lore of Soundwave, and apparently during one of the G I Joe crossovers Soundwave had little wirey, arm things in his cassette deck???
And that makes me think of how he could probably just use those to keep his cassettes from fighting each other, or acting out whilst they're inside him.
It'd especially be daunting for his new cassette (In the Empty Nester AU) to have to grapple with, bc they'd be getting fussed over even when the giant mech that's been holding them captive is working on something else!
If they tried throwing themselves at the window/door thingy on SW's cassette deck in an attempt to escape, he could just use the little arms in his deck to carefully restrain them before opening up to stick a cassette-sized blanket inside. The arms would then carefully swaddle the (rightfully) upset human with the blanket, and then loosely loop around them.
Patting the top of their head, holding the single hand that they've managed to wriggle free, and generally just being cuddlier with them than Soundwave typically is. (Mostly bc they are an extension of him that reacts with his emotions when he isn't actively controlling them.)
Soundwave prefers to maintain the image the human has of him in a similar manner to how he would behave around the other Decepticons. An impassive, incredibly smart and patient mastermind that knows your every move before you even think to try it. Of course, he Can read the processors of other Cybertronians, and as for the human, while they still Are human? Well...
He's had his other cassettes for at least 300 times longer than the human has been alive. Those little shits have thought of Everything to try his patience. (Though they weren't trying to escape him.) There isn't much the human could pull that he hasn't already built up a resistance to in regards to being annoyed.
And even if they could open the deck door open, he'd have to be considerably distracted in order to not just catch them again with the deck arms anyways. The only time the deck arms handle cassette repairs is if Soundwave is too busy fighting/running from something to do it himself.
He vastly prefers Maintenance Time to be something that doubles as bonding time with any cassettes he may have. He wants them to associate him, and being held by him with comfort. Comfort, and Safety are the two main things a cassette carrier must absolutely provide for their cassettes (Other than food/fuel and shelter bc duh.) Also, bc getting close to people, having them stick around with you, and survive for long is exceedingly rare during/after the war. (To the winners go the spoils, and to the losers, the leftovers.) (Even before the war as well if you were among those considered disposable by the upper class.)
So, all that to say, Soundwave is secretly terrified of losing the few people he has left after the war.
(The reason he let his typical crowd of cassettes go ((In the Empty Nest AU)) is bc he respects them too much to just keep them cooped up with/in him all the time. The issue with them not being around arises after they've left, anyways. Plus, they do visit when they can so it isn't Too bad for the ex-human cassette. At first.)
(I love how this started as a 'Huh? Soundwave is kinda weird in some iterations.', and ended up as 'Soundwave is a sad father of one adopted child that loathes him, bc it wasn't actually an adoption but rather a kidnapping. Also, war is Hell.')
-Not a Request Anon
Ooohh this is interesting :0 I didn’t know Soundwave had those wirey tentacle thingies. They’d certainly be useful for him, having some extra appendages to keep the humans safe in his deck.
As for that last part, yeah that makes a lot of sense 😔 he’s just trying to fill the emptiness he feels with an unwilling guest

I just watched the trailer for the new Transformers movie... and I have a strange double feeling
On the one hand, I'm glad that the film will contain the backstory to the events of the war on Cybertron. It already looks quite interesting and cool. The effects are good. Of course it’s not a story I’m used to, but oh well. Different universes and everything is different everywhere
But...fuck. The graphics themselves look too childish. Similar to TFE. No. I have nothing against Earthspark. but this is just... a children's series. and the movie trailer gives me the same feeling. The bot designs are so... awkward. as if specially made so that it would be easier to make toys and sell them. The jokes are also at the level of children. The behavior of the characters in the trailer is too childish. as if they are not even adults, but just teenagers. and behave too humanly. Don't know. a very unpleasant feeling when you were expecting something straight... WOW SO COOL, EPIC, BACKSTORY WOOOW. but I got something completely childish.
I'm not asking you to change YOUR opinion and I have nothing against it if you liked the trailer. But personally, he did not provide me with any pleasure. Rather disappointment.. and very much so..
Thank you for your attention. And I'll go cry :,
I'M SEPARATELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE DESIGN OF SOUNDWAVE. WHY DOES HE LOOK PURELY LIKE A CASSETTE DECK ON LEGS WITH A HEAD AND HANDS BUT WITHOUT BODY???

10 Questions for Writers
wasn't gonna do this bc i thought nobody probably really cares about this stuff but since i got double tagged by @meidui and @sunnysideprincess here goes nothing:
1. how many works do you have on AO3?
32 and climbing!
2. what’s your total AO3 word count?
ugh i had to go into my stats to find this number (hate looking at stats) but to my surprise that number is a whopping 816,828! (if added to my ff.net word count that figure grows to 1,062,375 🤯)
3. what fandoms do you write for?
stony exclusively, though i opened up to the idea of writing for steve and/or tony paired with any mcu villain for marvel trumps hate, and now i'm writing a steve/loki (with steve/tony as endgame) fic that's more fun than i would've anticipated! (x) still wouldn't call myself a "multishipper," though -- more of a serial shipping monogamist ;)
4. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
i do! sometimes i'm a bit slow to respond for various reasons (e.g. when people angels comment on my WIPs i like to reply when/right before a new chapter drops), and on a few occasions i've belatedly encountered comments that i forgot to reply to (😱) that i'll immediately rectify, but i very much want to encourage people to keep leaving them. a single comment—even short/sweet ones!—can be like rocket fuel to my creative drive -- and as someone who finds myself running on empty and trying to get by solely on fumes from time to time, getting that boost in my inbox is truly priceless.
5. have you ever had a fic stolen?
not in whole but in part :(
6. have you ever co-written a fic before?
i don't even know how that would work!
7. what’s your all-time favorite ship?
currently steve/tony. once upon a time it was spock/kirk, and the flame burned so brightly that it troubles me to wonder how it ever managed to go out. i collected vintage zines. i made insanely thoughtful fanmixes (one of which i recorded onto cassette tapes one-at-a-time by hand through a painstaking process and distributed to a few like-minded folks, with hand-drawn cover art and liner notes!). i read AMAZING fic that changed my brain and yet i never wrote a single thing! i made a secret spacehusbands clubhouse underneath a pool table during one long and otherwise unhappy summer. i even made spirk-themed patches and pins that sold quite well on etsy, and turned one of my large back pieces into the central design of a fully decked-out jacket (which was made specifically to wear while loitering around disneyland while baked). here's some photographic evidence of all of the above:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. what are your writing strengths?
smut-crafting is the obvious answer, but i flatter myself to think that i also manage to tap into a particular kind of haunted beauty that hovers about, casting its ethereal moon-shadow over all the most poignant relationships; something i've been obsessed with in life, that i'm compelled to pursue further in writing.
9. what are your writing weaknesses?
keeping it short. my punctuation can get pretty erratic sometimes. also, this might be a cop-out of an answer since it can be interpreted as a 'strength' but it really can throw me for a loop: i tend to let the characters tell the story 'they' want to tell rather than keeping a tight hold on the reins and sticking to my own agenda -- this can lead me off my intended course, for better or worse! as a storyteller i'm a bit of a pushover—always open to sudden inspiration wherever it might issue from—and steve and tony are such *strong* personalities that this openness can be a problem when i 'channel' them.
10. first fandom you wrote for?
harry potter. i was a bit of a snapewife for awhile there (don't judge). ff.net has been having some server issues so i recently logged back on to download my 245k unfinished epic from 2012, and found over a thousand people had left comments! some people were calling it a "masterpiece" and/or "the best fic [they] ever read [for that pairing]" which made me doubtful, so i skimmed over some of the story expecting it to be cringey but uhhh... it actually holds up? i mean, 2011/12 was quite a time for me: i was simultaneously finishing my thesis on "fandom, fanaticism, and religious fervor" and can recall having full-on religious experiences of my own while writing that [truly 'inspired'] fic, so i guess i was onto something after all!
some of these folks have already been tagged but i'm whispering a soft 'hello' into the ears of @carsonian, @soliloquent-stark, @pia-bartolini, @avengersnewb, @tinystark616 & all writers who aren't as averse to mirror-gazing as i can be

The name of the highest mountain pass in Europe, at 2757m above sea level, heading towards the Alps. This mountain pass, part of the Ortres Mountains, is famous for its steep slopes and more than 50 unimaginably tight curves. Interstate lines
I'm doubling bodies down the thinning line
two sides of a faded billboard sign
an angel perched on the shoulder of the I-65
holding my breath like I could live half a life
all my limbs fractured in another man's hit a run
odd angles making it hard to move on
strapped the seat belt severing my blood line
frayed edges like another passed sign
it still feels like a blade pressed against my neck
scratching like that 1984 cassette deck
caught on tape like a shadow in the southern sun
nowhere to go and nowhere to run
my mama said to always keep up my chin
but it's still scars me with all that could've been
like a roadside creature decaying in the southern sun
I've always had that devil riding shotgun
turning up the heat so we won't go up in flames
engine rattling with all my past names
I always survive but I can never leave it behind
backseat pile-up so high the rearview's gone blind
wholly covered in dust and it bites
twenty-four and crying at passing gas station lights
been praying to the radio stations for so long
strike me down at the finish line drawn
save me from flipping coins out the console
who knew chasing this straightaway high takes its toll
passing highway signs like I'm just a roadie
but right now I'm just eroding
all these steering wheel bruises on my knees
squeezing the blood around the cut of my keys
rambling on with all my haggard edges worn down
I'm just another strange face in an unknown town
I've lost myself in the land of the free
but the rearview mirror reflection is still me
how I've come so far without moving up a mile
so fucking angry at myself all the while
always looking out for that white car to pass me by
but there's nothing around here but desert dry
so I missed my exit a couple of states ago
my taillight's still busted and the transmission's slow
metal to blacktop sparks like the fourth of july
if I can't ride just let me fucking die
'cause I’ll keep going on when I burn through the motor
and there won't be a tomorrow if I don't pull over
so I hope God just lets me die today
give me forever riding down heaven's highway
'cause I've seen too many nights gone stone cold
torn backseat leather and no hand to hold
I'm so fucking sick and tired of riding on my own
should've known these roads don't lead home

Game Review: Ray Mears’ Survival Chimney (Commodore 64)
10/10
"Ray Mears’ Survival Chimney" for the Commodore 64 is a groundbreaking title that pushes the boundaries of 80s gaming technology. Players take on the role of Ray Mears, a seasoned outdoorsman, navigating the treacherous terrain of the Wrangell Volcanic Field in East Alaska. The game begins with Ray traversing mountainous forests, battling wild bears, wolves, and even fending off cutthroat media executives who either want him dead or offer miserly deals. As you progress, you'll collect essential climbing gear—ropes, pegs, hand cream, and Kendal mintcake—all crucial for the ultimate challenge: scaling the largest natural chimney. The goal is to sketch a rare wasp and sell the proof to National Geographic, the highest paying media publication.
A unique feature of this game is its 300-page guidebook, helping players code and complete a realistic 16 colour digital sketch using a combination of key presses and joystick clicks, a task that skilled players can accomplish in around 51 hours. The game’s difficulty is heightened by the chimney's natural tilt and fierce Alaskan winds, which threaten to blow away your equipment. Mastering the left-right timings is essential to protect your kit and succeed. This is one of the most advanced Commodore 64 games to date, with the cassette deck running at double speed to support the fast framerates and an exhilarating techno soundtrack by 808 State.
"Ray Mears’ Survival Chimney" offers a challenging, immersive experience that elevates Ray Mears' public persona to new heights. Prepare to sketch your way to victory, and stay tuned for the anticipated sequel, "Ray Mears' Ural Sinkhole "

Best of 2022
Tumblr media
Here it is: my yearly summation of the small labels working through rising costs and punishing manufacturing delays, the artists making music unafraid of chance, and the freaks supporting all of it in spite of the daily consequences of a ruling class increasingly detached from reality. Lots more that deserve accolades from more prestigious publications, and I'm sure they'll get 'em, but these are records that were inseparable from certain points of my year, including now. Yeah, they were all kinda my favorite at one point, and could be again tomorrow, but Kilynn Lunsford is #1 for a reason. Glad to be back at shows, however sparingly, experiencing all the awkward camaraderie and room-silencing/room-flattening performances that come with them. It all feels more necessary than ever. Up and up in a world of lava. Happy New Year, everyone.

Tapes! We got tapes. So many.
Starting off with some really cool stuff, courtesy of my brother.
Tumblr media
Shame me as you will, but I have been going this whole time without a tape cleaner. This one is brand new! (Or, it was in 2001. And nobody ever used it!)
Next up is… a birthday card. On VHS! Technology is a beautiful thing. This one has some of the coolest packaging I’ve seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lastly, the MCA studios tape. I haven’t had the chance to play this one yet, so I have no idea what it actually is. But it seems potentially really cool. Universal’s MCA Recording Studio opened with the Universal Studios Florida park in 1990, but closed in 1996, so it’s pretty neat to have an artifact from that short period. I can’t find anything similar to this tape online, so I guess I’ll just have to crack it open myself to see what it is.
Tumblr media
On to some junk I bought today with my own hard-earned 60¢.
Tumblr media
Are the Jurassic Park sequels any good? I don’t know. But I’m sure they’re better than the shitfest that Jurassic World was. And now I own them forever.
The Water Colors tape describes itself as a “classic forging of motion picture and music” that “pays homage to the endless cycle of waves, carved landscapes, breathtaking waterfalls and geysers that are water’s gift to us all”. Seems like a good thing to play in the background while I’m working on stuff.
As usual, I am obligated to buy every National Geographic tape I find. This one is about killer whales. Cute whale on the cover. You get it.
The Discover Channel tape caught my eye because it is completely nondescript on the outside. It’s unfortunately a Jesus documentary on the inside, but the outside os pretty sick.
And finally… that which shall not be named. Harry Potter sucks, yes, but I couldn’t resist being one of the only people on the planet to own a copy of a Harry Potter film that is absolutely not giving a penny to Miss Transphobia 202X.
But we’re not done. Oh no no. It is time for my special awesome machine. Her name is JVC KD-W110 Stereo Double Cassette Deck and we will be having intimate relations later. I’m currently using an old headset to hear her noises because I don’t have any speakers on hand, but it still sounds really really good.
Tumblr media
I’ll probably make myself some mixtapes if I can get the recording working. I should have Amigo the Devil’s new album coming in on cassette in a few weeks, so it’ll be fun to play that on here too.

***
These are all the components that I had through the years... wow.
That silver Technics receiver, man that thing cooked power wise. Rated at 100 watts but I would bet it had more than that. Had it for years until I replaced it with the Sony ... it cooks too at 100 watts per channel.
The first Technics Turntable was Belt Drive with a Shure MM Phono Cartridge. Fully Automatic, not sure of the model. Hard to say. There were a lot of them at that time.
That black Aiwa tape Deck, had to be the best Cassette recorder, ever. With Dolby C on a metal tape, it rivaled the best LP or CD. Annoying though because one channel quit. Had to replace an entire electronic display to fix it. Grrr.
The Linear Phase Speakers were not powerful enough for the SA828, replaced with the 4 way Speakers. Nice clear sound but like all bass reflex ... a little light on the low end. They were heavy too and awkward. About 30 lbs.
Their replacement was the DB Plus 1212s. Man what a speaker! The sound was outstanding. But the size of them! They were as big and heavy as a Subaru and cost just as much lol.
The second Turntable QX300 still rock n rolls today with the Sony AV Receiver and a Sony Double Cassette Deck.
The Bookshelf Sony Speakers rival many in their class today ...
Hadn't tried the stuff in years because I got into Smart phones and laptops and PCs and Social media... but wow!!!
That system still cooks, years and years later.

There is a huge interest in the vintage components and I can see why because they don't make em like they used to.
