Drawing Likeness: with Tem!

okaay since a few people actually showed interest in me sharing a bit of what I've been doing to figure out how to really capture likeness, specifically Temuera Morrison, I figured id do my best to write it out

I am also going to entice you with some of my recent clone art! (oooh some of it is unreleaaasedd)

a couple disclaimers before we start

-This is not some definite post about how everyone should be drawing clones, nor is it in any way claiming that this is the right way. This is just my musings as I stare at a mans face for way too long and try to replicate it

-I am inexperienced. As kind as you all are to me, drawing real people is relatively new to me, capturing a persons identity through their features is difficult for anybody, and I am no different. I have watched many a video on likeness and had my share of classes, but If im being honest, i rarely put it into practice successfully. So there'll probably be errors in this post or things i will come back to in a few months and wish I had said/done differently

ANYWAYs you guys get my vibe im just here to ramble and today we are rambling about mr copy paste. I am doing this for Law, my clone boy, because I plan on delving further into oc fanart and I want to put effort into representing him correctly!

SO LETS BEGIN

Before even deciding what specific pose of a person I want to draw, I tend to grab a bunch of references and compile them like so

Why so many? Well, we are about to delve into facial features, so when we are dealing with photos we have to take into account that there are an abundance of circumstances that will influence how a persons face will appear, some of these include:

focal length: All of these are taken on different devices, and focal length can play a big part in distorting faces

age will play a part, your face changes a bunch throughout your life!

lighting, while not as major, can muddy the waters and make it difficult to interpret facial planes and features

SO, to make sure we get a proper grasp of what's really going on, I like to make sure we have lots of options to compare and contrast with.

Next up! What I like to do is block out the main facial features with colour on different layers, the features I block out usually are the general face shape, eyebrows, eyes, nose and lips. But what you are looking for is the defining features of a person, so that could include other things! Maybe a scar, or some particularly prominent cheekbones.

I dont have any rhyme or reason when it comes to picking my colours, all that matters is you can see all the shapes clearly.

Now I may be biased, because Ive been staring at these for 4 hours, but notice how it still looks like Tem? :D

Anyways, now we can break these parts down, and you'll see what I mean about compare and contrast:

We'll start with isolating the facial shape, putting all these next to eachother you'll notice they arent exactly the same (partly because of my shoddy work) But the distinguishing features run through each shape! Namely the very soft rectangular shape I sketched out in the bottom right there. Along with his soft, wide jaw structure.

I did the same for the rest of his features!

You'll notice I highlight the prominent shapes and ratios,

When drawing anything, it is important to start from the very base shapes and build up.

When drawing something you want to look like someone, those shapes relative to other shapes is what makes it look like them.

I didnt use the same technique with his eyes and lips, but I wrote out some helpful info for them! More importantly for his eyes.

When drawing eyes, I find the most important part is where exactly I draw the creases, (along with the overall shape of the eye itself) it is important to understand where those will present themselves with hooded eyes.

NOW, with an understanding of his facial features in place, lets take a detour to colours:

before I start, a couple things to note:

-Temuera morrison versus the clone troopers in the animated shows:

While I love the animated shows they don't exactly stay close to their source material. Im going to link here to an excellent post discussing whitewashing specifically in relation to the clones.

Temuera is Māori, of Te Arawa (Ngāti Whakaue) and Tainui (Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Rarua) whakapapa, and also has Scottish and Irish ancestry.

The Māori people are the indigenous Polynesian people of mainland New Zealand (Aotearoa). Māori originated with settlers from East Polynesia. Māori people often vary in skin tone, Skin colour doesn't determine ethnicity. There's often a correlation but it's not a requirement.

But that is a tangent! What we are aiming for is to stay true to Temuera.

Bringing back my reference photos from before, Ive colour picked a buncha values and theyre all over the place. Why doesnt this work?

Similarly to earlier, you have to take into account the photos themselves. Many things like lighting, colour grading (when it comes to filmography) and makeup, can alter how a skin colour presents in photo.

You can attempt to get true to life by swatching from certain places on the face. Here I've tried to pick some photos with good lighting, and I've also tried to avoid overly lit/shaded areas.

Tem has a very warm, tan skin tone, Instead of colour picking I tend to try and replicate it myself, but I do often bring in references to make sure Im staying true to the source!

a brief intermission to talk about colour theory, something I myself struggle with alot. Often, when putting in flat colours without a background, I will forget to make sure the colours i intend to use will work with the skin tone i have picked! (something that is apparent in older works of mine, not just in relation to clones, but in general, the colours I end up with stray largely from their original sources and it is something I am doing my best to keep in mind and improve in! Although I don't think i am nearly experienced enough in the topic to say I have succeeded yet lol.)

anyways back to Tem :))

Now we can put all of that into practice! Things to keep in mind when drawing out a piece next to a reference like this:

the distance between the eyebrows? how far down his face does his nose go? Basically just, in relation to eachother, where do all those shapes we found earlier, sit?

The screenshot above is from before I did it myself, but instead of directly tracing from the reference, a handy trick I use it to complete your sketch first, and then overlay a traced version to see where your inconsistencies are! Alternatively, you could move your sketch over the image, but I didnt do it that way so!! uh!! im sure it works exactly the same!!!!

When it comes to a final illustration, or any sketch that isnt a direct study, of course you can push and pull and stylise! You'll see below that I'm not exactly 1:1 to my reference photo either.

The important thing with stylisation, or at least my own personal understanding of stylisation is that you need to thoroughly understand the thing you are stylizing! "You need to know the rules to break them" and all that. While shapes, lines and rendering can change, when it comes to drawing someone, and making it look like them, you have to make sure to keep their core features true to source. Caricature can capture a persons vibe whilst drastically exaggerating features, but it will only look like them if you KEEP THOSE FEATURES!!!! SHAPES!!! AHHH!!

But that is just my perspective on the discussion of style versus realism, please dont take is as Law, I dont know what Im on about half the time!!

anyways, after fixing your sketch, add local colours!

I rexified him because why tf not! But this is where you can go crazy with that clone personalization!

And then here is a very very barely rendered version (if you guys want me to explain how i RENDER that would need to be a completely different post, and I havent had anyone ask about it yet so who knows! maybe one day) But I digress, hopefully you learnt something new through my ramblings! It has certainly helped me organize my thoughts and I have also found some areas I would like to focus more on in the future to improve my own art!

TLDR: In order to understand an object, be it a face or a building or literally anything, you have to break it down to its simplest forms, understanding LARGER shapes will help you immensely in the long run

Note: This isn't exactly how I pictured it in my head and I couldn't get it right - it also took me ages to write because I wasnt happy with it and I still dont think its my best work but please enjoy😊

He had started teaching Billy and the other guys how to fight and wrestle, so when he was gone, the Road House would be alright against fights that needed to be broken up. You had been eagerly watching them from a distance each morning before open, pretending to read but you couldn’t take your eyes off him.

You had asked Billy if he would teach you how to wrestle once Dalton was gone, you were too nervous to ask him yourself. You barely got the chance to talk to him, most nights were busy in the bar, and he was rather occupied with stopping fights. Your stolen glances were no stranger to him, he had often caught you staring, and it made you even more nervous to ask him to teach you to wrestle.

You had your back turned, leaning up against a pole as you dried cutlery. It was a quiet night and you were filling your shift with menial tasks. Dalton had crept up behind you, his breath fanning your ear, “Slow night, huh?”. You jumped, back colliding with his front and dropping the fork you were drying.

“You gave me a fright.” You mumbled, bending down to grab the fork and turning to look at him. He had a silly little smirk on his face, stepping back a little seeing you tense with him so close.

“Sorry honey, just trying to amuse myself. Theres not much else going on right now.”

“There must be more interesting things than scaring me.” You huffed but it turned into a grin when you met his eyes.

“Not really, you’re kind of the only interesting one here.” You blushed; despite knowing he didn’t mean it.

“Nah, you broke someone’s arm your first day. It’s hard to top that.” He shrugged and laughed; his big toothy grin was intoxicating to look at.

“So, you want to learn how to wrestle?” Dalton asked you, now leaning against the same pole as you, his crossed arms brushing against yours.

“Oh. Yeah, I do for self-defense if I needed it. I was just going to get Billy to teach me.” You rubbed your arms sheepishly.

“Yeah, he told me. He thinks it’d be better if I taught you.” You were going to kill Billy. There was no way you’d be able to cope having Dalton teach you how to wrestle.

“Umm, I mean if you’re sure you have the time.” Drawing out the ‘umm’ you felt his eyes piercing into you.

“Of course. Meet me outside my boat tomorrow at dawn. And don’t wear any loose clothing, don’t want anything your opponent can pull on.” You nodded as he walked away, secretly excited.

The next morning you stood outside his boat, waiting. It was quiet, only the soft sound of the waves sloshing filling the peace. Listening to Daltons advice, you had turned up in a sports bra and tiny little shorts. The door of the boat slammed open, Dalton stood there shirtless, also only in little shorts. Trying to tear your eyes away from his bare chest proved difficult and you could feel his eyes watching yours. A blush formed on your cheeks as you waved a hello to him.

“Alright so I’m going to basically tackle you first and show you where to put your hands and then you’re going to attempt to wrestle me down.” You nodded, feeling your breath catch in your throat with him coming so close.

“The easiest way to get somebody to the ground is a leg takedown. You basically grab onto one leg and throw yourself to the ground.” Dalton knelt down beside you, patting your thigh.

“I’ll do it real slow ok, honey?” You breathed out a sigh as Dalton stood up and took a step back.

“Ok so you’re going to dive at me, latch onto my leg, like this.” Daltons strong arms wrapped around your thigh and lurched forward. Your head landed on the sand, a dull throb travelled down your stomach as Dalton landed, half his body on yours, his arms still draped over your thigh.

“Oh well you made that look easy. Billy said you go super hard on him.” You pushed yourself up, readying yourself for another go.

He lifted his leg up, your grip faltered, you landed on his abs, leg thrown over the thigh you were gripping.

A playful smirk delighted his lips as you placed your hands on his chest, pushing yourself up, sitting on his thigh. You smiled, excited to have put him on the ground.

“See, you can go rougher with me.” You cheekily retorted to him, sticking out your tongue. Dalton’s eyes rolled, suddenly thrusting his hips upward, in one maneuver, throwing you off and pinning you to the ground, your hands above your head and his leg snug between yours, keeping you in place.

You gasped and struggled in his grasp, his knee nudging the softest parts of your thighs.

“See you’re fucked if someone gets you in this position. Go on, get out of it.” Dalton was speaking but your head was empty. You couldn’t focus on anything besides the feeling of him against your body. You were scared to move in case you accidentally grinded yourself on his leg. Dalton searched your eyes, trying to see if you heard him or not. He noticed the way your breath tightened and the way your stomach muscles clenched with him so close.

“Unless this is something you like? Being pinned down like this.” Dalton’s knee inched further up and you dug your heels in the sand, an overwhelming sense of embarrassment settling upon you. For once it was him being caught staring and not you. In a rush of confidence, or madness, you let his wrist go and let your fingers run through his hair. A moment passed; you could feel your heartbeat in your chest thumping loudly. Daltons free hand slid up yours and pulled you down by your neck, your noses now bumping each other. Daltons other hand broke free of your grasp, cupping your face. His lips connected with yours, your eyes fluttering shut as he pulled you closer to him. He pulled a strangled sound from you feeling his hips roll against yours. There's really not much for me to add other than ✨️vibes✨️and like a general direction/idea. But i do have a few so here's what i got so far:

I imagine that Miles was the first one to ask bring up the patched jackets (i don't really know what they're called) thing for like just a conversation starter at first but ended up getting geniunely interested as Hobie rants explains the whole thing. From its history where its originally a practical way of mending clothes but now means more to the punk culture, to how to stitch it in, picking the right jacket for it, etc.

He would explain each patch in his vest, what they represent, and how he got it. (Or Miles would ask abt it idk)

I like to hc hobie as decent enough at sewing to make shody patches with his own design. Its not good good but he's proud of them enough to show it off

Miles couldn't get his mind off Hobie's rant and some of the shoddy patches that looks so rough and like a snap away from leaving Hobie's vest and he can't get his mind off the fact that Hobie made some of his own patches which made him curious enough to make his own designs.

At first it was just drawings and doodles but then he got curious enough to try embriodery stuff. How hard could it be, right? He was wrong. Embroidery is very hard. (This coming from me who does embroidery for fun) But the learning process was fun enough that he continued on.

Rio absolutely caught him more than once, brings out her sewing kit, and gives him tips and advices like different kinds of stitches and how to fix holes on clothes, happy to have something they can bond over. (Would love to have more Rio content. She deserves the world.)

With his newly aqcuired sewing skills, he offers to fix Hobie's patch that was loose.

Then he showed Hobie the very first patch he made which was a very simple sunflower (or something else if you want) and

Hobie was very normal about that and trying to be casual like: "Can I keep it?" And it flusters Miles like "Uh, yeah, sure. I guess. I mean if you want it—"

Hobie then decided that Miles is his new go-to patch repair guy just so he can spend more time with him

Miles uses a really old jacket from either his dad or his uncle Aaron or heck even from his mom or maybe even from his grandparents. (your pick) Because he knows that you just dont do that on a new jacket! That goes against its whole purpose!!

When he shows Hobie the jacket he intends to patch up, Hobie got so exited that he rips off a patch from his vest and gifts it to Miles to "start him with" or something.

They gift each other patches that reminds them of the other

taking a break from merch!

been feeling incredibly burnt out, so here are some thoughts on merch and events and shop stuff this year 🤔 LONGGG ass ramblings below

im going to be posting maybe like 1 or 2 merch posts daily for the next week-ish, just as a heads up!

i apologize in advance bc i feel like sometimes people just do not care about merch posts as opposed to regular ol' drawings (yes i know the psychology is that people dont like to be advertised to)... but i think the launch of my shop opening was pretty poorly timed 😬

the canada post strike (making canadians averse to purchases online, although i do not use canada post, i think a lot of people are under the assumption that most businesses use canpost) + combined with the EU product safety scare + maybe with tons of black friday competition + posting on the weekend has mixed results ..

i'm reconsidering the decision to reopen the store in dec, as i won't have any new items. additionally, this has been long overdue - i'm going to take a break from merch (besides the few events i already have coming up in dec+jan) to focus on what i really want from art. another thing that i gotta bring up is - this is the first year where i started doing more events past the summer, and well into the winter. i usually make a huge batch of new designs in late spring (for my biggest event, anime north), and a smaller batch in late summer (otakuthon). but, now i've been making new designs year round, which really is not something i'm used to, and contributed to the burnout. i've often been questioning myself, "does this need to be made?", "is this good art?" and it leads me to spiral more than necessary.

similarly, i should be working on my portfolio instead, as a lot of my portfolio works are from art school T__T i keep postponing it, i tell myself "oh just one more event, just one more event" bc i have trouble dividing my attention. how did i even do personal art + buttload of homework during animation school? HAHAHA. not to be harsh but like. what am i doing honestly 😭... i love making personal art, but i WISH i had MORE to show for my career. i want to go back into visual development. once im ready, i'll go back to drawing illustrations. in the meantime, i'll do a lot of reflection and chatting with friends, playing games, etc. getting in touch with the things i missed while i was busy crunching... --- also compiling a list of products that i have thoughts on - charms: - right off the bat, as i mentioned before, i think i've exhausted all i can from this lineless/borderless charm style! chibis for me are not artistically that interesting to draw hahaha... i don't think i'll make any more of charms in this style (unless i get a really good idea?). - i've been thinking of either stopping charms altogether, or lessening charm designs in the future. if i still... want to make charms after my break... i might opt to draw in a bust style instead. i'm really inspired by these one piece designs by my friend avenoirn..!! and these rdr wood charms by searift are so good!! but otherwise my current plan is to just focus on prints and stickers. they are infinitely easier to store too AHAHAHA.

- above: furthermore, this style does not suit all series unfortunately, examples above where i think the design is a bit weak... and i think that's where my weakness lies T__T i make things to satiate my curiosity for a short while HAHAHA but there are so many times where i'm just not proud of, or i feel indifferent, to the merch i make months down the road. - unfortunately charms are a huge seller at conventions, because of their small nature and cute quality i guess they make good gifts? i find that for me my charms didn't sell well in the past, until i switched over to this new style in 2023. i think along the way i started prioritizing charms more, and just making things that didn't work in the style like above. in reality, my heart wanted to make illustrative stuff like prints and sticker sheets, even though these products take infinitely longer to create, due to the amount of drafting and research i put into each piece. (funnily enough charms dont sell as well online + people buy stickers more) - it's getting infinitely more and more expensive to import charms from asia. first of all, shipping costs have increased, and secondly... government customs fees are truly the icing on top. it's been hard for small businesses since covid, and how heavily chinese packages have been taxed. - to be transparent, here are my suppliers: - i used vograce from 2015-2022, but over time felt that their quality declined so i stopped using them. - i use juno consistently, but also opt for kuien if i need a rush order done (~within a week, but also gotta pay premium for that rush service!!). - i have tried wooacry and can attest that their quality is good! to me it's not much different than juno's quality, besides small colour nuance and there (since wooacry's printers have the ability to print from RGB), however my designs tend to be on the simpler side.

- above, wooacry: although, it's hard to keep sizes consistent between designs (but i am a fool in this regard because i didn't check the digital mockup that precisely), so i probably won't use wooacry for huge character lineups unless i am 100% sure my charm designs are all the same size. - also geez... i didn't know people felt so hostile towards charms. stickers: - importing stickers from US suppliers into canada has also similarly become more expensive with taxes TT to be transparent, i use stickerbunnies and i personally love them, however with taxes and slow response times, i cannot vouch for them all too much if you don't live in the US. however i think they would be okay if you didn't have a deadline (e.g. off peak con season) - currently i'm looking into local canadian manufacturers with affordable pricing, as well as the ability to commit to rather large orders (a few hundred)... unfortunately i'm rather picky with vinyl quality. my biggest character flaw. i used jukebox for a few designs, however they are pricey if there is no current sale. --- specialty: - also this is something ive been thinking for a while, but i'm likely going to discontinue "specialty" merch in the future..

- above: anything that's not prints, stickers, regular charms... - it's ironic bc as artists grow bigger they want to branch out into new unique types of merch.. i just don't find that they sell that well for me >< i'm a bit sad at the marcille pudding, i honestly thought it would sell better. still fawkin love it though. - they cost an arm and leg to boot = higher price = harder to sell? or maybe my design sense is just bad!!!!! - the only specialty stuff i have ideas for right now are some baccano coins + poker chips... wooacry posed a potential interest for them so im. rubbing my hands greedily like a fly. -- wood: - whoa i was really negative above LMAO. one thing i DO want to try out more are layered wood pins!!

- i really enjoyed working on the wooden layton pins i have... they don't sell that well online anymore i guess bc all of my followers have seen it a million times already LMAO but they sell quite well in person!! - thankfully wood is not that pricey and i can stick to small batches for them (like 10 quantity each?) - inspiration: i LOVE these wooden dunmeshi pins seirui made. i cant wait for mine to arrive...!! also love the backing pins, they add so much character!! general - oftentimes when i make a set of products, i find that main characters sell better than supporting characters. after a while of promoting them as last chance items online + bargain bin items at cons, they just don't sell and i'm left with a ton of unwanted merch T__T what do i do with the rest of the characters that don't sell? i do have to admit i'm concerned about waste, and there are no good resources on recycling old merch. - what i did in the past was - for buttons specifically - tear them apart AHAHAHAHA. buttons are made out of metal + paper + plastic and the former two can be recycled in my area. i'm not sure if it helps but i tried to do it as per my area's recycling rules... - acrylic charms are another matter altogether. i try to gift them as much as i can... - prints are great however because i can just use them as scrap paper or recycle them if unwanted!! - i got a little carried away making merch this year. i think i'll have to go back to my old method, which was making merch in small quantities, and only sell a small number that i can confidently rely on (~10 or less).

Like Shishida, he just makes sure youre taking care of yourself while drawing or painting. What good is an amazing artist if your sick and cant draw.

I really like the idea of using his scales for textures idk why. Like imagine you just drag him away from whatever hes doing, you ask him to cover his arm in scales and you just start painting him yellow. its 2:18 am as i start writing this. youre not supposed to listen to what your brain says after 9 pm or whenever but i need to get some words out. this morning i stayed in bed doing nothing for an hour. then i played some video games. i got bored and ate some food. went back to playing video games. basically went back and forth between those until about half an hour ago. i want to actually make something. when i make stuff i love it. i love sharing it with people. i want to share my interests, but due to my own mistakes and bad choices and things i regret, i have few friends and no desire to join an online community to find more. and pretty much only my brother is who i can show most of what i do i dont like being embarrased about who i am, but i also dont know if what i feel is what i actually am. and then when i see things about how happy some people can be with their choices in life, i wonder what must be wrong with me. im terrified of not being known but i have no idea how to put myself in any sort of situation where people would know me i want to create. i want to make music. i want to draw. i want to fix things that are broken. i want to make people happy. the things i do create arent good enough to pursue in my eyes. my music sounds bad as soon as i listen again. my drawing can be decent but compared to what i had imagined its sad. my fixing is restricted to my four cars but i have no motivation to get past any slightly difficult part of it. (ive been trying to fix the same car for nearly 5 years now) i cant tell what other people are thinking, so i have no idea how im doing at making people happy. but how can i feel okay with making people happy when im not happy myself saw something that makes sense to solve part of that. it said that lack of motivation might be that some of the more basic needs arent being met. according to some versons of the maslows heirarchy i might not even have the bottom of the triangle filled out, when the things i want are three or four up. i hate the abstractness of feelings. i wish i could know definitively if what im feeling or more often not feeling is abnormal or not. im pretty sure it is but unless i know something for sure i cant accept it. i hate subjective answers. how long does happiness last? am i feeling sadness right now? am i depressed? the only thing i can ever say is whether or not im stressed, my body tells me that with cold sores. anything else is subjective, and according to my brain, theres no right answer to a subjective question. i feel bad only using tumblr for venting now but its the only place i can. if someone wants to read, they could. theyd have to search it out, and its certainly not easy to find. knowing one person follows this blog is so strange to me. i dont know them, i dont know what sort of person they are, but the idea that at least someone knows part of me a little more deeply than my family does is somehow comforting. sorry if youre reading this rn and i made it weird. anyways. i need to make myself better. i want to do it on my own, but i know thats probably not a great choice. there are people with much better track records in every category whove made it their life to help in situations like this. but man, i really dont want to talk to people.

Howdy! I had to take a bit to think of an answer for this question. I didn’t want to fall back on the statement everyone gets when they ask about art (practice), especially since you specified ideas rather than art appearance/style. So! Lets get into that! (gonna be kind of long oops)

First I want to say that I enjoy your self portrait, its very colourful and I LOVE colour. The choices in colour also complement each other very well, as yellow, orange, and blues go well together. Not only that, but the saturation of each colour help bounce off each other and bring it all together. Now, I assume the materials are a blue pen, and crayons? It might be markers, but the way the orange moves across the yellow makes me think of crayons. I adore it! I love crayons and haven’t been able to use them in a while, so it’s nice to see them being used. 

Now, your question, I feel needs some context from my side of things before I can properly answer it. I have been doing art for about 15 years now, and I have done multiple mediums including painting (water colour, oil, and acrylic), drawing (crayons, pens, markers, pencils, etc.), fiber arts (knitting, sewing, crocheting), baking/cooking (i think the presentation counts and how its a medium that takes combing lots of things to make a singular outcome), and a few I wont share right now. I’ve had official art classes that made me do things very specifically, one that taught me art history and how different genres of art were introduced, another on creativity and how to help flourish ideas, and some others on how to use different mediums and styles. I also watch speedpaints, animatics, and animation progress videos to learn some quick shortcuts in digital art since I was never taught officially on digital art. Including all of these, I also have done LOTS of practice in art. Having said this, lets get into some of my own thought processes. 

When I make art, the first things I tend to ask myself is “what do I want” and “what do I think would be interesting”? These aren't mutually exclusive, but they can be answered very differently depending on how I want to do something. For the Siffrin during the Mal du Pays fight piece, I actually started it by seeing a cat picture and thinking, “I want a discord reaction with Siffrin face down on the floor” which went into drawing Siffrin as the cat and then asking myself, “Wait, why is Siffrin face down?” which went into Oh! It’d be funny if it was Mal du Pays! So, doing that I decided to make it in the king's room which meant I had to draw a background. Eventually that transformed into “Okay but it doesnt look right, why?” the answer was that it didnt look like the game so I had to add some texture details and ta-da! Siffrin face down! 

But this also comes from years of practice in knowing what I want and knowing how to draw it, some of my art pieces were, “I think it would be cool if I drew a character looking down at me in front of a skyscraper” but um,, I didnt know how to draw that ;-; so I had to just let my hands kind of try and finish the piece even if I didnt like it. At that point, I realized I needed to practice the character and my style more until I COULD draw what I wanted. Which led into my drawing, a LOT of things I couldn’t and didnt like. 

As for symbolism in art, and how I got ideas for it, a lot of it comes down to knowing the character and how you want to translate your thoughts of the character into art. One of the ways I started doing this was adding flowers to the characters art, or learning what flower I considered “theirs” that way I could add hints to  it in the drawings. Some of it also came from animals, others came from art genres and their historical significance, and some come down to theories (such as colour theory in art). 

Finally, it really does come down to practice. As much as I hate to say it, a lot of the art pieces I do and share tend to lean towards “practice” or concept doodles so that I can better understand HOW I want to add it to a bigger piece. Most of my Siffrin and Loop drawings tend more to that as I need to better understand how their shapes and lines communicate to an art piece (Loop being a fucking star gets me so much) before i can add symbolism and make a bigger art piece. Even then, sometimes it doesnt work and the bigger art piece needs to be put to a back burner before i can communicate my thoughts on the characters as I wish to. 

(Here’s also a neat little trick I do, write out what you want to draw and then draw thumbnails so you can figure out the composition of the piece you want. It helps you know where something goes and how you want it to appear without keeping it in our brain for a long period of time. Some of the things I share are concept doodles but I’ve shared pictures of me doing this before! It can be annoying but trust me, it helps when you can’t figure out the draft at all.)

I play a ton of musical instruments including the violin, which is my favourite. I speak many languages and learning them is a hobby for me. I am very interested in science, particularly biology and epidemiology.

I have been told I seem a bit cold, shy, or overly-academic on the outside, but when people get to know me, they find out I can be very outgoing and I love to make people laugh. I am a very awkward person but I can usually spin it around to look like charisma instead. Humor is kind of my coping mechanism and I don't really have a filter. I worry a lot over small things, and sometimes minor occurrences send me spiralling, but I am oddly very calm in actual emergency situations. I like to joke I panic at small things so I dont have any anxiety left over for emergencies. My friends say I am the smart one of the group, but I like to think I am the comedic relief.

I dont actually have many dislikes. I tend to try to think positively of things. I suppose I am not a huge fan of sports, but I wouldn't say I dislike them. I'm not too fond of doing maths either, but on the right day it can be enjoyable. I think the one thing in my life that I truly dislike is that I am sick all the time. I have a chronic illness so I just feel like I perpetually have the flu.

Ty Lee loves singing with you! I think she’s got a decent voice but even on days when her pitch isn’t the best, her confidence and enjoyment more than makes up for it.

I see Ty Lee as someone who speaks a few different languages as well. She travelled with a circus for a while so she picked up bits and pieces of different languages while travelling.

As a result, she’d love to have conversations where you both switch languages every few sentences. It’s very confusing for anyone listening but she loves it. It’s like a secret code just between you two.

I think Ty Lee would be one of those people who develops feelings quickly. However, she’s more than happy to wait until you develop those same feelings before she makes a move.

Another one who thinks you’re very funny. She’s got a pretty decent humour so she’ll be quipping back whenever you make a funny comment.

When I was a kid, I really enjoyed making art, and I was mediocre-to-bad at it. I was showing talent in other areas and I jusf figured, I like it but I guess its not for me.

Sometime in high school I came across the idea of talent and skill being different things and it completely blew my mind.

Once I graduated and I had spare bandwith, I thought "eh why not" and started drawing. Have to start somewhere, right? And what I drew was not skilled at all. Like whatsoever. I remember struggling to just get face proportions to look as though deliberately exaggerated and not like I had no idea what I was doing because it wasnt going to resemble accurate at all because I DIDNT have any idea what I was doing.

Energy limitations aside, writing has always come easy to me, on the whole. I can study and learn and improve and try new techniques, and it isnt necessarily easy like no effort, and the words dont always just flow, by something in me just gets it, just has an ear for language rhythms and thinks of interesting metaphors; I have talent in writing.

In contrast, learning to draw is WORK. Its difficult. I struggle. The image in my mind is always way more complex than the version I can get onto paper. My taste is way beyond my skills, I dont begin to know how to pull off my art ambitions. Sometimes I dont even know the language for what Im trying to do.

However, its been years and years and years since I started being diligent with my art practise, and now I can create things that are pretty decently good most of the time. That at least resemble what I was going for, that show some amount of skill. But Im not much talented. Its slow going.

Its fun, and its worth it, and it makes me happy and fulfills me creatively.

I actually started trying out some clothing designs recently and that came surprisingly easily. When I started with art I was attempting modest superhero outfits and mashing characters together and it was fun, but frustrating that it never looked polished or like, good. But the practise paid off. The practise always pays off somehow. Every abandoned WIP, especially those abandoned bc my skills fell short, and there are MANY of those, its all XP and Im a few levels ahead now of where I was.

If Id been able to write prose this whole time, realistically, it would be excellent by now. Woe gd has nerfed me because writing is absolutely exhausting in ways that other art and craft are not.

(I say this so you know im not being super modest about the visual art. I know im a talented writer, albeit a very rusty one. Im not a particularly talented visual artist but Ive drilled some skills into my brain and muscle memory).

(And yes it absolutely pisses me off when people say "youre so talented at art I could never." Im not, and I couldnt either. To get to my mid skill level has been a fuckton of work, it didnt come from nowhere, I wasnt blessed with it. Writing skill I have definitely put in work, but Im on a motorboat and my visual art im paddling in a kayak. Progress, and effort, are measured very differently between them).

So earlier in art class today, someone drew a characters hands in their pockets and mentioned that hands are really like the ultimate end boss of art, and most of us wholeheartedly agreed. So then, our teacher went ahead and free handed like a handful of hands on the board, earning a woah from a couple of students. So the one from earlier mentioned how it barely took the teacher ten seconds to do what I can’t do in three hours. And you know what he responded?

“It didn’t take me ten seconds, it took me forty years.”

And you know, that stuck with me somehow. Because yeah. Drawing a hand didn’t take him fourth years. But learning and practicing to draw a hand in ten seconds did. And I think there’s something to learn there but it’s so warm and my brain is fried so I can’t formulate the actual morale of the lesson.

like, alright. with The Elf, i have been jiggering her design for 100 years.

first of all, it's not even that complicated, right. i mean, she's wearing practical pants and riding boots and then a blouse. a cloak overtop. there's much to do here, but it isnt very complicated. it's acceptable. and yet my issues begin here. i would change EVEN THAT if it wouldnt be a retcon.

she began life as a generic character who i expected to survive a few weeks until the pathfinder experiment petered out. so i didnt really think about it, and just gave her the most generic description possible:

and thus my fate was sealed. fucking blouses. Fuck! i'm pretty sure i picked a blouse solely because i was wearing a blouse when i wrote that and didn't want to think about it. (PROJECTED LIFESPAN: A FEW WEEKS). if i'd known any better i would've dressed her in something like this:

"but isnt she in a desert?" you cry. sure, yeah, but its not like she ever went outside right. she had WORK CLOTHES that were made for going outside, which i dont imagine were any more fancy than a wifebeater and her riding pants (maybe a riding jacket, but she wouldnt keep it on). otherwise she'd absolutely be one of those rich people whose wardrobe revolves around looking nice indoors.

so yeah. She is in a desert, and if i (robin 2025) had my druthers she'd just be constantly hot all the time. elf is NOT a minimalist and she is NOT a practical person. this is someone who likes couture and needs you to know that their aesthetic tastes are refined and 100 layers deep.

but we have this BLOUSE thing going on, so we'd ought to stick with it. when i was in her generic character era i chose to give her a bib blouse because i lowkey wanted her to have a jabot, but didn't feel like drawing one all the time:

very simple, very easy to draw.

i didn't have as much sense of her opinions on aesthetic back then and thought to myself that she wouldn't choose something very dressy, just something which was obviously expensive based on the tailoring and fabric (needs you to know that she is wealthy, doesn't want to look necessarily like she's showing off). That just isn't true in 2025. I've since figured it out. She has no sense of the concept of overdressing and will wear whatever gaudy little thing she likes. Yes, even into the apocalypse wasteland.

And then she had jeans and some boots i saved off pinterest several years prior. because two weeks.

but then some time passes, she's still kicking, she is my little guy. i draw her in my notebooks and everything. and i think to myself Hm. this situation is really visually uninteresting for a character who theoretically would've blown all her disposable income on buying nice clothes. also i get a new monitor and i realize that every color it ever displayed was really yellow-green and it had some weird fucking thing with saturation going on. i suddenly understand what another artist was trying to tell me about the colors i had chosen (embarrassing...!)

so we have this COLOR situation and this BLOUSE situation. how can we make a BLOUSE (WHICH WE ARE LOCKED INTO) more interesting...?

well, dear reader... around here i also started thinking more about her as an actual character, and decided that i'd begin to explicitly model her speech after the way Jane Austen characters talk... and i thought to myself, it'd actually be somewhat interesting if her society at large had regency social leanings, rather than just having a bunch of guys who, because they're imitating a human culture they encountered hundreds of years in the past, are stuck talking in an antiquated manner... and i want her design to maybe reflect her coming from a culture which is stuck in the past, in a setting which (presumably) would have non-modern-looking clothing as a baseline.

now we start looking at victorian / edwardian / regency fashion. yes those are all very distinct I KNOW OKAY. the general veneer of antiquity is enough for me i'm not going to be period accurate over my elf. Grow up

and it turns out victorian women's blouses were a little lame and they didnt really wear them outside or something. so i just kind of ad-libbed some ruffles and paneling which i thought made it LOOK old-fashioned. like this although i dont draw the top panel with ruffles around it. maybe i should.

and, you know, this character is kind of UPTIGHT. so maybe things ride high on her. like her pants are high rise, and her boots go up to the knees. maybe i give her shirt a collar so even her neck is covered. this marks my transition from regular jeans into jodhpurs, which were the riding pants of the victorian era. i know this because i found them in a victorian tailoring book where they were labeled RIDING PANTS. i made them high-waisted which required me to reference fantasy larper steampunk pants more than anything, because jodhpurs of the time had this weird panel on the front instead of like, a zipper (but they also had a belt somehow? i don't know.)

and imo it looked pretty bad, but i was really married to this. The boots looked good, at least. Boots always looks good.

unfortunately reference images for these suck and i couldnt really decide what the seat was supposed to BE. is the riding seat on the jodhpurs another layer beneath the fabric or is it sewn on top or what the hell is going on? many questions confounded me. one of my friends said she looked like an oompa loompa and i knew i couldn't stick with the jodhpurs.

then i watch this sergio leone movie and i realize that all these guys are wearing seated riding pants...

cool flared bottoms, cool shape.... what the... what's that on the side?

these guys have lace cutouts on their riding pants??

so now she has western riding pants and a pseudo-victorian blouse. you know what this is fine. The elf is someone who can't decide whether she wants to be anprim or whether she wants to academically study nature from a basement. you could argue that she did decide because she left the basement, but i'd rebut that she left the basement due to the basement's location, and her ultimate goal is probably just to find a different basement elsewhere. like, she's anti-civilization, but she also loves clothes and all the amenities of civilization. so sure. her design can look a little incongruous to reflect that. Plus, with that lace thing going on, we can probably make even the riding pants look posh...

how do you draw lace?

in order to ignore this question, i spent some time theorizing about incorporating insect motifs (because she studies beetles). like what if the lace had wing patterning? what if i made the ends of her sleeves cut like elytra and then had a shear trail of lighter cloth coming out of it like wings? et cetera. i gave her a bowtie and tried making the elytra-wing thing happen there too, but it was pissing me off too much, so i gave her a regular bowtie. this bowtie was later downgraded to the type of tie that was common in the west, although i am really bad at drawing how thin it would actually be. the ends of the tie sit in a way that interrupts the ruffles and buttonline of her blouse and this still pisses me off but it's fine.

i changed her boots because the victorian riding boots weren't doing it for me anymore, and now she has western riding boots with the pointed toe and the massive heel. these look very pretentious on someone who's wearing lacey riding pants and a ruffley blouse, so that's fine. great. they're probably still knee-high but now her pants are too long to show this.

i also realize here that i can't actually make high-rise pants look normal. it kind of just looks like i don't know how long the torso is supposed to be. i cling to this for a while but every drawing sets the beltline a little lower. Uptightness factor lost.

You may note that i have never mentioned the cloak even once.

I've tried to design this damn thing.

i know what kind of cloak its supposed to be. some sort of spanish cloak with a bone-supported neck like they did in the victorian era (not with cloaks, but they did do that with the necks of dresses using i think whalebone anyway thats not important). but holy fuck i made it shaped and also layered. and i know the general shape i want, yeah?

one of those. cool. very doable. Except that this character has it cut and embroidered in imitation of beetle wings.

i am not good with hanging cloth. I'll be honest. Hanging cloth stresses me out. and now this hanging cloth has a weird ass shape and a lot of finnicky lines. it's of a shear material so you can still see her stupid outfit underneath. there's not a way to draw the lines in that doesn't make the entire thing look horribly busy, or which makes the cloak actually look like it is a material and not just a transparent layer with opaque scribbles overtop it. I just do not know what to do there. I simply don't I am so rope's end with this goddamn cloak.

also, i know there's cuts in the side because she needs to hold weapons and shields and reins in that thing. i just ran out of steam just now so i will not elaborate further on the cloak. even thinking about it fatigues me.

anyway, to top it all off, i still haven't decided on a color scheme, really...

Art Thoughts: Burnout, Artblock and Style

Is burnout even real? Was the question asked to someone stuck in art with the answer back being "Of course it is real! I am feeling it now!"

So how can burnout or even artblock be real to some people and not really to others? What is it that some people do or don't do that they seem to avoid it altogether to the point they don't believe it even exists?

The answer is that Burnout or even Artblock is a sign of neglect.

You went overboard! How it usually goes:

Pushing yourself too much to do things you dont want to. like forcing yourself to do things in a certain way while avoiding what you really wanted to do.

The thoughts you have while you draw.

For 1) Which is a beginners trap of thinking art should be done "right". And "Right = what the tutorial / book / teacher / you did in the past". (Not that it doesn't affect professionals, but that it shows up early and sticks around the art journey)

So everytime you draw you force yourself to do it in the way you saw in a tutorial or book or class you were taught. Or just trying to draw that one arm or face that came out alright and you keep chasing that past success. But what it ends up doing is making all your drawings look the same. And OF COURSE THEY WOULD!

Because all the thoughts and considerations you have while you draw are about trying to do what you already saw in the past. Making all your drawins be "drawings from memory". And you are good at it, so much so that they all look "same-y" or just like the tutorial.

You push yourself and do another drawing, maybe you think to yourself "i'm a smart person, and the smart thing to do is to study art then years later when i'm really good i can try my own ideas and pictures"

But after a while you can't force yourself to push through anymore, you can't seem to be able to just sit down and hold a pencil the very thought of scratching that paper with drawing intention gives you anxiety. You feel this feeling this resistance to even start.

You think yourself lacks the motivation, "Oh! How i wish i wanted to draw" you tell yourself. How i wish i had motivation i had that feeling that forces me to go through this.

You make to-do lists you watch youtube videos and read books about motivation about the secret behind discipline and habits endlessly creating reasons that althought they make sense and sometimes gives you a little boos they don't last long term.

Sounds familiar? I hope not, but that was me and to some degree still am. All it is is just you pushing your feelings aside for so long that they ran dry, they can't take a beating forever. You mistook motivation for fuel when it's actually a Turbo buttom, a push that comes either before, during or after something. Burnout it just reaching the 0 point. The point of absolute neglect.

Think back when you wanted to draw, you probably had an idea an image you wanted to make, it was not about all these tutorials or fundamentals and books.

You just went to those because you felt scared of the drawing coming out wrong or bad or making a fool of yourself or what would others see you as or being vulnerable or however else you put it. But it's not about any of that.

You got to do art fo the reason you want to do it. That's it. That's the cure the "burnout and artblock don't exist button""

Those dream pictures got to be made for those dream reasons. "Oh but its not gonna look awesome like in my head and i'll feel bad about it"

Same! But you have to remember this. The moment you set yourself to do art, of any kind YOU are the artist, if you draw it and doesn't come off quite as you want it to then you can just try it again later.

That's not the final version of that image, You decide when it is done.

You can do it, figure out you missed the mark and attempt it later, a month a year a decade. There are artists that have just a single or a few images that they are passionate (deeply interested) about and their whole career is pursuing that dream picture.

There's only 5 Da Vinci paintings in the world after all. And the Mona Lisa cannot be restored because there's several paintings of the same Mona Lisa layered beneath the original. Attempts Da Vinci himself made that missed his mark.

Just think about your favorite artists, the real good ones. The ones you know their work just by looking at the piece.

They all stand out in a way or another right? That's because that's what they are mostly interested about. The ones that have crazy good anatomy are head over heels interested in anatomy. Those with the juiciest of colors are just in love with colors.

Sargent, Picasso and Leyendecker all drew people their whole life. All knew anatomy and shapes and what other fundamental we are learning today. But what made them be who they were is that they are good at the things they care about! The things they find interesting is what comes through as distinct and shape their style.

Great artists are good at what they find interesting.

So just sit back and realize that art drew you in for an emotional need as well and avoiding it is causing that burnout/artblock.

If there's an emotional picture in your head you gotta follow that, if you do and don't enjoy the end result you will realize what you want to learn and HOW you want to learn it.

It will become obvious It will become self sustained It will meet your needs Burnout won't exist anymore.

for 2) If it's your thoughts, you gotta realize that its all anxiety indulcing thoughts. But you don't need to entertain them.

Anxiety being the desire to avoid or change something or situation.

Whenever those thoughts emerge let them do their thing and don't mind them. I'm not saying you should force your mind blank.

Just don't converse with the thought dont go around making stories with the thought.

As long as the though don't snap your atention from the drawing it will just come, say what it has to say and vanish. Just nod and dont interact with it and it will melt away.

Then other thoughts will come around and you can pick and choose which you want to make stories with or just let them all go.

Your thoughts are not you. Just choose other better thoughts.

That's why some artist say artblock don't exist. It's not a "real" thing because it's usually artists forcing themselves or neglecting themselves. It's a sign you went overboard.
