one thing i feel like (disappointingly) wasn't elaborated on enough in mp100 is reigen's own loneliness.
sure, we got that whole episode with the separation arc, but that never really resolves reigen's loneliness. that doesn't change the fact that even down to the end, he has only one adult friend and the rest of them are a gaggle of teenagers that like to hang out around him. and sure, that's not inherently a bad thing necessarily, it's probably the most friends he's had his entire life and that's why he cries when they get him a birthday cake.
but i feel like he's the kind of guy who does actually want adult friends to talk about adult things with. someone at the same stages of life that he's at, or even older.
reigen is so used to helping other people and giving other people advice that i feel like HE needs someone to be there for him, to give HIM advice. someone to scratch HIS back for once.
but another thing is that i feel like part of him thinks he doesn't deserve it, because of all the lying he does.
there is not a doubt in my mind that reigen has so much guilt stockpiled inside himself about all the lying, and (in my own personal headcannon) part of the reason he can so easily jump into danger at times is because he quietly hopes that maybe if he punishes himself enough with enough injury, or even with death, that'll somehow make up for it.
obviously that's not how it works, and reigen is a good person because regardless of the lying, he is still on some level helping people with their very normal problems by giving them very normal solutions, and is just attributing everything to spirits and exorcisms. not to mention everything he has done for mob (despite initially using him for his buisiness). he's a lot more of a grey person than he thinks he is.
i think he really needs some good adult friends, but he just can't really get ahold of any because deep down, as much as he gets on mob for being socially awkward, i think he's just as socially awkward, deep down.
i mean, the guy had to google how to ask someone out to help mob figure out how to talk to tsubomi. i don't think he's as great with people in a social context as he thinks he is. in a business context, sure, he knows exactly what to say because he has all the scripts and all the excuses in the world, but in a personal, social context, i think he can be quite clueless.
he doesn't really know how to talk to people or where to find friends as an adult, so his only friends are any coworkers he potentially has, and half the time he didn't even want to be friends with his coworkers (hence no mention of friends in his previous office job). it's different at spirits and such though, because he has mob, and later, serizawa.
i think for a long time, he considers mob "enough" of a friend, even though he still understands his role as the adult in the relationship and thus can't *actually* discuss adult things with him or treat him like an adult friend, as it would probably be inappropriate. he considers mob a friend even though he's more his student, because mob is one of the only people he sees on a regular basis until serizawa starts working there, and that's when things get a little different.
he realizes that he doesn't have to treat serizawa the same way that he treats mob, because serizawa is an adult, even if he's an extremely, openly awkward one who doesn't know how to socialize very well. but that's okay, because reigen can work with that, he's also very awkward deep down, even if he won't admit it. not to mention that mob, reigen's other friend, is also socially awkward, and reigen successfully navigates conversations with him all the time.
i think once reigen realizes that he doesn't have to hold back as much as he normally does around mob, he finally understands that his best friends can't all just be a million still developing teenagers who aren't on his level with life, and it gives him a kind of emotional release to finally have an adult friend.
serizawa also feels the same way, having only had exactly one friend in the past like fifteen years, and it was his previous boss, who was evil, and told him to attack and kill people. now he has a boss that is his friend, and has him helping people, and frankly i think it gives him much more peace of mind.
anyway i think they're besties.

The room was unrecognisable when I returned. There was a shape on the bed, where Harriet had laid, but it wasn’t her anymore. I could barely make out anything even remotely human in the pile of pitted and warped flesh that now remained. The bed itself was slick and shiny with a dark fluid that dripped off the hanging sheets and onto the floor. But what truly repulsed me, what made me flee as I did, was what moved and squirmed on all of it. They covered every surface: the floor, the bed, what used to be Harriet, even the ceiling. A thick, moving carpet of pale, writhing worms.
(MAG 6 - Squirm)
Finally, I found myself standing over the mass of pitted and hollow skin that was once a man. He shuddered violently as the gas engulfed him, and then lay still.
(MAG 26 - A Distortion)
I have read many statements now by those who are changing, who are becoming – something else, and few if any of them seem... entirely rational. Entirely the people that they were before.[…] Then again, I suppose I’m hardly in the best position to judge. Perhaps to anyone listening to these tapes I sound remarkably similar to Hezekiah. Or to Manuela. Or to Jane.
(MAG 152 - A Gravedigger’s Envy)
JORDAN: You turned me into what? A torturer?
ARCHIVIST: Yes.
[…]
JORDAN: I don’t... I don’t know how to be this. I don’t want to scare people.
ARCHIVIST: No. But you’ll learn.
[Beat.]
JORDAN: Am I still me?
ARCHIVIST: I don’t know how to answer that.
(MAG 184 - Like Ants)
I’ve seen what Jon did in MAG 184 being compared to Jonah Magnus, obviously. I’ve compared it to Jonah Magnus, it makes sense. I’ve also seen it compared to what Jon did to Melanie, which makes sense, though I don’t tend to do that myself. I haven’t seen it compared to what Jane Prentiss did, which is interesting, because Jon compares himself to Jane, he does that, he’s been doing it since season 1, thank you deluxe transcripts for ruining my life.
Jane Prentiss turns people into avatars. Jane Prentiss was the first avatar Jon — knowingly — encountered. Really don’t think Jonah Magnus counts. I have a lot of feelings on how Jane and Jon turn people into avatars, on how it’s a reflection of what’s happened to them, especially Jon. How with Jordan there’s this choice that isn’t even a choice at all, that’s basically the same choice given to Jon and Jane alike.
I have lots of feelings on how Jon parallels Jane in the later seasons. And about that relating to the cycle of violence and becoming a fear entity avatar as an allegory for trauma.

Okay putting this thought out there:
Pocketcat in Funger Termina, yeah?
So. He says Rher put him there to make sure the game's going smoothly, without direct interference. He sells you good items for heads of the other contestants for a motive.
However.
If you kill Daan, he won't appear at the museum.
1. He doesn't love me. :( lies.
2. He is only interested in Daan and nothing else about this Termina Festival
3. Adding on to the second point, even if he got orders from Rher to make sure you have an incentive to kill, he's only giving that offer once, after he realises you killed the medic boy he was haunting.
Also there's the whole. Like is Per'kele for real when he means Rher never intended for this festival to happen, and like he only used the Moon for his own Sulfur cult stuff. Cause if Rher never knew of this festival, only realising it's happening in ending B when the traces of him peeks at you for a moment before fading back in disinterest. How. Did Pocketcat get orders???

The sad reality is that if somebody crushed a watermelon between their legs and then somebody else just absolutely mauled their inner thighs and then ate them out, they'd probably get a yeast infection or something. Luckily, the beaches of Republic City are protected by an invisible and impenetrable Yeast-Repelling Dome,

reigen definitely strikes me as the kind of guy who wants to take care of everything, and i think it's largely because he doesn't have any adult friends. even when serizawa comes in, serizawa is an adult but he doesn't know how to do a lot of adult things because of the way he lived for so long before working for claw and then working under reigen. i don't think he understands how insurance works, or credit, or taking out a loan, or refinancing your car or a mortgage or any of that shit.
because of this, he really does see himself as The Responsible Adult in most situations, so he takes care of everything. because once again, 99% of his friends are the gaggle of teenagers that mob brings around, *of course* they don't understand insurance, they're like 14 years old *max*.
he sees himself as The Responsible Adult, leading to situations like what he was trying to do with the members of claw before mob accidentally transferred his powers to him--he was trying very hard to leave the kids out of it so they didn't have to deal with these grown-up freaks, because he knows damn well kids shouldn't have to deal with things like this, of course adults should be more responsible than this. and that's another reason he tried to get mob and everyone to run away, even if that was nowhere near a viable option for them.
this is part of what draws me to reigen, the way he switches in and out of situations, what makes him such a multifaceted character.
to himself, he's a responsible adult, or an adult that should be more responsible because he's an adult. he's also a liar, a conman, a cheat. i don't think he genuinely sees himself as a good role model. he probably views himself in a shade of grey, but closer to the black side. i think he carries a lot of guilt and shame for that, and he tries to make up for it, but it never feels like enough to him.
but to mob, he's a person who made some mistakes because he wanted to put food on the table and do/be something interesting, because he doesn't realize how cool he is without having to lie. he's also, despite that, both smart and wise and can be so genuine when he's trying to motivate mob. he's an amazing teacher, not necessarily for his psychic powers, but more so for guiding and leading mob through life when he struggles to understand people and social situations and can be gullible and anxious.
to the former members of the seventh division of claw, he is one of the most powerful psychics in the entire world, who is just as wise as he is powerful, with the kinds of perspectives on life that they couldn't even comprehend. he's someone that deeply humbled them and their childish dreams of world domination, motivating them to strive to be better people, to get involved in their communities instead of chasing after nonsense, helping them realize they're no better than anyone else. that if they're nothing without their powers, then what are they really?
to serizawa, he's one of the guys that helped get him out of claw and into the real world, where he and mob showed him that while his former boss helped him, he wasn't a good person. to serizawa, he's smart. despite being a conman, reigen is someone that serizawa can look up to. even if their methods are somewhat fraudulent, serizawa now has the power to make up for past pain he's caused by helping everyday people with their everyday problems, and even their not-so-everyday problems, and that can get him out of bed in the morning with confidence. to serizawa, reigen was one of the first real friends he's ever had.
reigen definitely doesn't see himself the way that other people see him.
edit: undoubled the last bit T0T
