BREAK THROUGH LIMITATIONS

First day of Open Body : L5P, Atlanta, GA

It’s threatening to rain, location one is a bust, the camera was left at home - but I am with my family (chosen and blood) . I am in my place of birth . It is the the beginning again. I am beginning something I’ve already begun. I am mostly calm knowing that this not for me. This is for you. 

We end up in Little Five Points. Read up on it- it’s good history. Its a history of intersection, indecision, information - its a history of American samsara - and it was the best place to do it. 

Thank god Mr. John Arthur Brown was there - representing - documenting - observing - living. He is our eyes to look back on - 20/20 - and his camera captured some magical moments.

This project is a meeting point between bodies, where we all connect as one; no judgement, no pressure, no goal, no guise. 

My Aunt Norma was hosting us, and her mantra for the hour was “Break through Limitations!!! Come paint!”

Today there is great mistrust and fear of Everybody - but Everybody can paint. I trust in this. One must break through the limiting thoughts of sharing space and sharing love and do so with Everybody. L5P did this with me. With hearts and smiles and colors. People paused. When presented with the right opportunity people will pause, and participate, and commune and communicate. 

This body is just a vessel. It does not reveal anything true about any true part of ourselves. Our body is a projection, and one that is often misinterpreted by others projecting their own fears, loves, losses, joys. . . a body may as well be a blank canvas.

In-tour-duction to my Other Half

Last post I talked a little about leaving New York to embark on this journey. . . 

Waiting for me at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in my birth city of Atlanta, Georgia, was the woman who would be my morning, noon, and night for the next two months. My back up. You should know her.

Very quickly (for those who are new) during OpenBody//HumanCanvas, I stand for about an hour in a public space without moving, speaking, or seeing. There are paints and markers set up around me and the idea is that one can pause and take a moment to participate in a positive creative act. . . in this hour I need someone to be what I call my back up. 

Callista is one of the most beautiful brilliant people I know. Her kindness and generosity allowed for this project to blossom in a way I couldn’t have imagined. Seeing her smiling face when I stepped out of the airport filled me with an indescribable joy and assurance that this art tour would solidify as one of my most important life experiences. Seeing her smiling face as a new student, in a new city, in that 4th grade classroom where we first met was another one of those life moments. She’s one of my angels and has been since day one.

Before jumping into the rest of the tour, I want to reflect a little bit on Love; without Love, and lots of it, none of this would have happened. Love is one of those all encompassing phenomena that cannot ever be aptly described in the words of us mere mortals, in part because it encompasses so much. Love wrapped us in this journey where we were continually at the mercy of the generosity and kindness of others, who housed us, fed us, shared their cities and playgrounds, and accompanied us on this journey. Love allowed for endless car conversations and learning experiences. Love let us be silent together and share some deep moments of insecurity and pain. Love let us grow and connect and discover ourselves. (Just so you know, you could very easily go back and read this and replace the word “Love” with “Callista” to get a sense of how fortunate I am to have her at my side and to have shared this journey with her.)

I am often asked why I do this project. This project has no specific goal, no one thing to accomplish. This project doesn’t solve any problems. This project has no specific end. Callista asked me how she should respond to the question of “then why do it”, since this question was directed at her during my silence in the piece. For the most part I told her to ask people to reflect on why they think it is happening, or to come up with a spontaneous answer that felt right in the moment, but for people who are persistent I told her to say something like this:

“There are so many random acts of hate and destruction that happen in the world today, why not go across the country with a random act of Love and creation?”

I find myself leaving New York City mostly on hazy days, in hazy moods that lie between happiness and sadness, perhaps because I’ve always come and gone. 

During my first visit to the city I didn’t see anything, but I felt the bustle from within my mother’s belly; she had been carrying me for 5 months at that point. A little over a year later, I visited with the family and breathed Brooklyn air with my Aunt and Uncle and cousins there.

On July 16th, 2016, I left New York and flew to the city where I was born, the city where I lived for my first six years on this planet. I flew back to start this artistic journey in Atlanta, Georgia, where one of my dearest friends would be waiting for me. . .
