Up to this point, Bucky's only ever been in assistant coaching positions.

That is, until he gets an out-of-the-blue phone call from Gale one day letting him know about a position opening up at his school halfway across the country. A PE teaching position with a head football coach role attached if he wanted it and could prove he was qualified.

(The school being desperate to revive their once-formidable team's chances after a spate of retirements and departures and downright bad luck. They're willing to try anything, and even for only being an assistant coach, Bucky's got some momentum behind his name/reputation at that point).

After not even hearing from Gale in over a year and a half (and still being a little burned by it), Bucky has to decide whether to drop everything and take a chance or carry on-course with the pretty successful life he'd finally sort of settled himself into without him.

Spoiler: he ends up choosing the former.

People can't quite believe the rumours that serious, focused, (kind of a hard-ass) Mr Cleven would've been best friends with a guy like Coach Egan. Even watching the dynamic play out in front of them, they're not sure most of the time what to make of it, lol.

('it' being ✨ sexual/romantic tension ✨ of a kind previously unwitnessed by any living person within the bounds of the continental united states).

Not me getting inspired to create a modern wukong yaoguai hunter gang/mafia style au while having just gotten my feet wet with the JTTW/Black Myth storyline 😭

Imagining Wukong in a golden varsity jacket decorated with a classic black dragon, and a self-stitched "no.1" on it, but being only second in command cause he can't behave himself. The group "leader" will still be Tang Seng, because he's the "big boss's" favorite, and has a good head on his shoulders. He can't fight for shit, but he's got good magic, which is good enough.

They roam the streets as vigilante demon hunters, in comparison to the state sanctioned hunters, whom of course is lead locally by Erlang Shen.

There's always beef between them, but they also always watch out for each other, coming in clutch to help the other out when they least expect it. The two groups would up-end entire cities to get to the other if they're in need.

I do think there’s something to the volume of distribution that the Internet allows making it easier to put works of a very wide range of quality before people’s eyes, as well as the increased push for writers to do self-promotion cutting into time/energy that they could have used for writing. I do think that’s going to increase the number of bad books that a person encounters. But it’s also easy to romanticize the pure-t crap of the past, for a few different reasons:

You’re more likely to have to seek out something that didn’t just come out, so you don’t feel like it (or its imitators) are being shoved down your throat. A 2009 pop song about Going to the Club is more charming when it’s not sandwiched between two nearly identical songs on every Top 40 station.

Its initial pop culture moment has probably come and gone, so you aren’t worried that it’s going to be boy bands on the radio ad infinitium.

You might have been the target audience for that boy band/superhero movie/sketch comedy show/paranormal romance/ghostwritten kids’ book series/animated princess movie ten or twenty or thirty years ago. You might not be now. I have a lot of affection still for Beauty and the Beast: the Enchanted Christmas, more so than almost any Disney movie that’s come out since 2001 or so. That doesn’t mean it’s good.

Not everything that survives in the pop culture consciousness is good, per se, but it’s usually somewhat memorable or entertaining. It’s not the dreariest rank-and-file Twilight imitators or disco songs that are still with us; it’s Twilight itself, or tight shit like “I Will Survive.”
