Thinking about that time in our first campaign my character's dad (adoptive, a very important baron) almost died.
Apparently, he was supposed to. He was not supposed to survive contact with the lich. Don't even ask me how or why we got to the lich, genuinely all I remember is panicking because all of a sudden he had like five hit points and as the party schemer I had two thoughts that erased my awareness of everything else: (1) MY FUCKING DAD (2) THIS LICH IS GOING TO KILL US.
See, my job is finding ways to get us out of things, and as a wizard, I was well equipped to handle that. Except thought one, "MY FUCKING DAD," took priority over EVERYTHING ELSE. My little wizard was orphaned and down his only brother. This guy was all he had. His whole world. World's #1 dad.
... And the lich almost one shot him. He was collapsed on the ground and struggling for breath. This did not register as a cinematic moment to me because I was PANICKING. We roll initiative.
The lich rolls highest. I'm frantically looking through my notes to see what's available to me. Tries to kill me, too. Counterspell.
My turn. Throwing ALL CAUTION to the wind, plan only vaguely half formed, I run up to the baron and tell the DM I'm going to drag him back to the party.
"Your speed is halved from carrying him. You can't make it in 15 feet."
There's dead silence. Everyone is waiting for my response. Seconds of silence. "What are you going to do?" (DM speak for "please hurry up.")
"... I'm a tabaxi. I can make it in 30."
I double my movement speed and drag him back there anyway, to the confused relief of the party. Our sponsor (MY FUCKING DAD) is safe for right this second, but how are we going to fight a LICH?
"Anything else?"
"... I have a scroll of teleport in my bag. And I'm within 10 feet of everyone." Most importantly, I'd DUCKED BEHIND A WALL OF BARRELS AND CRATES so the motherfucker couldn't see me to counterspell.
There's dead silence for a few moments. The voice chat proceeds to blast my eardrums with excited cheering and laughing. The DM and I both pull up the spell. "Roll for it. Where are you going?"
"Home."
I roll a 99. We vanish from the lich's lair and are deposited, battered, bleeding, without guidance, in the charred, crumbled ruins of what had been the baron and I's residence. (It had not been that way until very recently. It was news to me.) There's relieved silence. There's an emotional reunion in what remains of our living room. I cast Tiny Hut in a defensible corner of the ruins after we all chat and we get what sleep we can.
(The DM would later confess that the baron wasn't supposed to survive and he had to change his plans now lol. We were supposed to be cut off from all resources at that point. My dad showed up in the final fight since he'd survived TWO murder attempts [ig the BBEG was the third lmao] and, well. I schemed then, too.)

After the war. (dndrabble)
Well the poll said to throw it down raw but it turns out I'm incapable of doing that so just a few notes;
Sataro and Vekna are of an ancient race of high elves whose civilisation was entirely obliterated about 3000 years ago by a great cataclysm. This civilisation had had a historical tradition of nomadic life and worship of a primal god of fire (kossuth), but that was being suppressed by it's leader's own imperialist designs that valued a static population and military conquest. Sataro was a field-marshal in the army and from a middle-class family, Vekna was a Paladin of the old religion and came from a sub-section of society that still held to entirely nomadic life.
During a sudden attack upon their capitol by giants, Sataro sacrificed herself in order to give civilians a chance to evacuate. She would have died of her injuries but Vekna used some amalgamation of purpose and divinity to preserve her in stone, alive but still and barely conscious. This statue was placed in an old monastery and eventually forgotten.
Sataro awoke properly 3000 years later and was inducted into a dnd campaign. She believed all her people long dead, including her wife, and had been internally struggling with what her life could even mean to her when everything that HAD ever meant anything to her was gone.
During the campaign, after returning to the last remnant of the continent that Sataro's civilisation used to be on and, finding an abandoned dwarven kingdom called Bane Anvil, the Party ALSO found the dwarven king of the place preserved alive in it's vault. He had paused time somehow, awaiting the moment he would be needed again. And with him, Sataro found Vekna too. Apparently, unable to move on, Vekna had befriended the dwarves and it's king and helped them with this stasis contraption just for the small possibility that she and Sataro might find each other again in this time (my DM did this to me without me knowing a single thing I was so normal about it you've no idea)
This drabble takes place after they have finally returned to the party's base of operations, a dwarven city that gives them a house as a reward for the king thing. It is the first time Sataro and Vekna had properly had a moment of real privacy and rest since they were reunited. o7
Oh pps addendum, this ancient race of High Elves lived in the frozen north lands and averaged 8ft tall. It was a running joke in my brain that Sataro, whom is 7'7, was actually considered short in her time but is now surprised to find that she dwarfs most people in this era.
After taking one look at the utterly unprepared bed in the room they had chosen, Sataro and Vekna had quietly sought, and found, three of the unclaimed mattresses throughout the house. All three mattresses joined their original single one on the floor and made up a wide bed that would have been luxuriously spacious to anyone but Vekna and Sataro.
"Big enough, you think?" Sataro asked without much faith.
"Of course not. There is no bed big enough in this sodden era."
"We made do in Redbite."
"You were on me like a fool clinging to a fight the night in Redbite."
Sataro quirked a brow at her wife, "And you were not?"
"Well, you are so little," Vekna drawled, "I was worried you might freeze to death without our⌠four quilts from home." She made a great show of counting all the layers Sataro's trancing once demanded and mirth quirked at her lips once she was done.
Sataro sent her a typically unamused glare, and Vekna responded to the call accordingly; with a shameless grin.
They sat in their stalemate for a moment before Sataro conceded a silent defeat and grunted, "Dekash.. But it is too warm here for clinging."
"We don't need covers." Vekna offered immediately, quicker than Sataro had expected.
"⌠I suppose the open window and sea breeze should keep it icey enough," she said, smiling.
"It will." Vekna assured decisively. And then continued in a grumble, "Beggars belief how quickly snow is left behind in the south. At least in Bane Anvil I could find relief on the surface."
"You lived there then?"
"A little while." She replied, though immediately turned on Sataro as if knowing the thought that caught in her mind, "Ack, of course the cows were long dead before then Rybka."
The centuries-old 'little fish' nickname hit them both gentle and harsh and without discussion they stepped closer, shoulders brushing as they began unbuckling their armoured layers. "Yetty and Etta survived the war?" Sataro asked in a lower tone.
"Mhm," Vekna rumbled, matching her pitch, "I swear, too clever by half for just pulling burdens. I did not even go looking for them, they just came back to the yurt by themselves after the dust settled."
Sataro snorted, "What a perfect way to annoy you," she smirked back, flashing her teeth.
"They did it on purpose, I had thought for sure I was finally rid of them," Vekna growled.
"They weren't easy animals, even for the two of us. You could have sold them on." Sataro set her splint mail aside.
"No, I couldn't have."
They allowed that admission room to breathe and by the time they could speak again Vekna was rid of her heavier layers.
"The kits helped." She continued, eventually. "With the cows."
"They made migration with you?"
"Yes, but they cared for them in Mithlond too."
Sataro's head tilted curiously, a soft look coming to her eyes. And Vekna gave an irritable sigh of something before answering her silent question, "Your brother's family made their settling in the city for a few seasons, after."
"Gnestat hated Mithlond."
"So did I."
"⌠Did it help, to have them there?"
"Mm, for a time. In the beginning."
"And after?"
Vekna paused before turning her massive bulk fully towards Sataro and looking down at her with a hard stare.
"Are you sure you want to know?"
"Of course."
Vekna sucked her teeth in frustration, sarcasm bleeding into her tone, "Fine, let me say that differently, are you going to brood over ancient history just for the sake of feeling guilty if I tell you?"
Sataro grimaced.
Her nose scrunched with a displeasure that dug the scars around her eye even deeper and she bit her tongue against any rebuttal. Instead, looking for retaliation and reassurance both, she reached for the heavy blue cloth bound so particularly around Vekna's waist. She felt more than heard her inhale at the contact but Sataro did not pause, she stroked once over the wedding fabric before digging two fingers into each knot and beginning to gradually prize them free.
"Probably," she conceded, though she clearly did not like the admission, focusing on the patterns of metal thread woven in the familiar garment. And then in an even lower tone she admitted, "It is not why I asked."
Vekna's brow cocked curiously as Sataro finally pulled the long scarf away and let her hands act out the careful muscle memory of folding it over her palm. The colour was more faded than she remembered it, but it still held. Vekna said nothing for a moment as she watched this action with eyes full of something unspeakable.
"Why then?" she finally asked and Sataro seemed to writhe at the question.
Vekna held her breath as she watched Sataro struggle with what she wanted to say. Her shoulders tensed, her brows knitted and a muscle bounced in her jaw in a way that looked painful under the scar tissue. Eventually the look of conflict, ferocity and scarlet that had been growing was directed Vekna's way.
"I do not know how to say this."
"The look on youâŚ" Vekna said in a release of breath, tracing her hand over Sataro's brow and following the scars down her cheek, a touch Sataro pressed into like a cat.
"Thinking too hard again, as always," Vekna chided, "It is not like you to falter though."
That won her weary smile and Sataro's ears wilted a little as she let her forehead drop to rest against Vekna's chest. "Mph, my head has been full of wool since I awoke. Makes giving up on thought very appealing."
Vekna clicked her tongue once again, her hand coming to rest over the back of Sataro's neck. "That is because you don't 'think', you agonise."
"And you arbitrate."
"And you are dodging my question." Vekna gave a single tug on Sataro's braid and drew her eyes back up. "It is me. Just say it."
Sataro thought she heard the rarest note of a nervous plea in Vekna's voice and, real or not, her blood rose to meet it fiercely. For her, she would beat her thoughts into words. She dug one hand into the fabric of Vekna's shirt at her collar, breathing out through her nose once, before, "Fine. I think I am too⌠uh.. ravenous."
Vekna's beautiful brows rose. "Ravenous?"
"Yes. It- ah⌠it is too much. It makes my hands and my voice shake."
"For what?"
"You, obviously."
"You have me," Vekna hummed warmly, but Sataro was not reassured.
"No, even telling you this, I feel as though I am trying to tear pieces out of you."
"Maybe you should."
"No, listen-" Sataro urged, trying to shake her for emphasis, "I want to lock us in this room and hear you talk for a hundred days, or however long it takes until I have heard it all-"
"That doesn't sound so bad, a little dull."
"-Especially what you don't want to tell me, I want to-.." her free hand clawed the air in her effort to explain herself, "-dig it all out of you. It is a brutal feeling."
This does give Vekna pause, "⌠Wanting me?"
"Or missing you. Maybe they are the same. Either way it is too much, it feels like I will break something."
There was a silence between them for a while, Sataro weathering Vekna's usual unreadable but intent stare with a durability grown from centuries of practice.
"Mm," Vekna began at last, "so my standing here is not enough, you want to tear out everything new about me that you do not know, even the secrets I find hard to explain, just to wet your thirst of me after so long apart? It all must be yours?"
Sataro's expression pulled towards rueful and raw annoyance at having been so concisely laid bare and she opened her mouth to fluster a response, but Vekna's eyes were raptorial when she interrupted her, "And what have I just done, Rybka?"
Sataro frowned, then blinked, eyes widening with a surprise that soon folded and broke into an emotion so potent it gagged her. It made her reach for Vekna's face, cup her near manic canine grin with hands that dragged at her skin as she pressed her battered nose into Vekna's cheek. As arms enveloped Sataro's chest she pushed and Vekna laughed through those canines as her back collided with the wall, a warm but sour sound that made Sataro's torn ear twitch and her chest burn.
They breathed as one for a while, until their hearts calmed and the burning tempered.
Sataro's hands were still greedily running over Vekna's grinning features that nuzzled into every touch when she finally sighed and her gaze sharpened with renewed purpose.
"What happened between you and the family, after?"
Vekna grunted, rueful amusement showing on her face as she realised what she had encouraged. Still, she did not try to deny her a second time, her expression as she held Sataro's gaze pinching with something like melancholy, or pain.
"They were there. When I was told nothing could be done and you were taken away."
Sataro did not blink. "They grieved with you?"
"Yes, in a way," there was a pause before Vekna pushed away from the wall in a huff and concluded darkly, "-then they moved on without me."
She looked away, down, to fix upon Sataro's waist sash. Her short in and out breath was sharp and her fingers touched the fabric almost nervously at first, before sinking into it's softness as if to savor it. "They said your name again, as though you were dead. I could not be there for that."
"Did you stop seeing them?"
"They came to find me a few times, they tried to bring it up with the Order too."
"They did?"
"Yes!" Vekna said with a hollow laugh. "Went crying to the Mother-Superior, something about my needing help, to stop going to see you, needing to 'let her go'. When I told them you were conscious at times they thought I had gone mad I think." Vekna's manner of prizing the knots of the fabric free was decidedly slower than Sataro's had been, giving her wife time to slide arms about her shoulders as she worked.
"Gnestat did not come to visit?"
"Not when you were awake." Vekna muttered.
"⌠but I am sure I remember speaking to someone else.."
"The kits would make the journey with me, even after their father stopped."
"Oh! Yes," Sataro chuckled fondly, "Jurnat left flowersâŚ" Memories of her niece and nephew seemed very sharp suddenly, jagged and bloody with a grief she had yet to grow around.
"I'm surprised they were so dogged," she said with a hoarseness that Vekna lovingly ignored.
"Busybodies all of them, I preferred it when they barely tolerated me."
Sataro's closed her eyes, swallowing around the bittersweet lump in her throat.
But Vekna's frown only grew and her lip curled venomously. "And then there was your fucking mother."
This was all but spat, making Sataro flinch in place, though Vekna quickly halted her efforts and let go of the scarf to instead just cradle Sataro's ribcage in her hands.
"I hadn't meant to say that."
"I'll forgive you." Sataro said in a sardonic but tight hum, "⌠so even she felt compelled to finally speak to you?"
"When she could not help it, and I couldn't escape."
Sataro settled her back and torso into Vekna's confident hold with a weary and resigned sigh, running her hands up and down Vekna's shoulders throughout the silence. It seemed to soothe.
"Gnestat and I would complain about her together, now and thenâŚ" Vekna mused with a distant look.
"And what would you say?"
Sataro's attempt to make the question sound casual failed abysmally and Vekna growled back at her. "Why ask me something I want to tell you but I know you do not want to hear?"
Sataro gave a frustrated shrug. "I will have to know eventually."
"Who says so? I think I will take it to my grave."
"If you must, let's seeâŚ" Sataro's eyes wandered to the ceiling.
"⌠See what."
"What's the worst thing I can imagine my mother doingâŚ"
Vekna leaned forward and bit her ear, hard, worrying at it's cartlidge as she pulled her closer whilst Sataro chuckled and tried to shake her free.
"You really are ravenous." Vekna growled through her teeth.
"You're the one consuming me ear-first."
"I could start elsewhere-"
Sataro kissed her. Vekna's hands at Sataro's back shook just a little so that, when she pushed, the monolith of a woman went down easily to sit on the mattresses below. Sataro followed her, dropping into her lap and her waiting arms.
"Luuchik," Sataro burred, arching to make space at her still-tied waist as Vekna gripped her tighter, "Finish your work, and tell me what happened."
The command was fruitful. Vekna returned to her methodical untying.
There was a quiet between them as they waited for Vekna's 'sunbeam' petname to stop choking her at it's invocation. But, eventually, she began in a croak;
"⌠She wanted to parade you through the plaza."
Sataro was still and quiet.
"Just take you, as you were, up the city. Set you there, like any other monument. She would not stop calling you her 'martyr-daughter'. It started the moment she returned to the rubble, I only ever saw her weep about it in front of someone important."
Her words were burning and she looked to the side with a bitter, gritted laugh that left Sataro cold.
"I had to- we spent days in the district court just to keep you from her scheming hands."
"Gnestat?"
"Mm, and Yurtar too."
This was a surprise, to which Vekna only nodded a confirmation. "Yes, even Yurtar. It was their words that got you sent to the monastery, in the end. My protests were nothing in comparison."
"Did they say why?"
"Something foolish about, 'whatever you were, you did not deserve to be a toy'. But they still did not visit you after the fact."
"I never expected it."
"You should have."
"Their convictions were noble."
"As noble as they were flaccid."
"Vekna."
"What was ignoring you ever going to do, hm? Force the Titah to strip the 'Marshal' title from a statue, all because a cross-dressing seditionist sibling disapproved?"
Sataro butted their heads together, "You were a cross-dressing seditionist."
"I had more backbone about it."
"Are we still having this fight even after they are so long dead?"
Vekna gave a deep, long sigh, and a sudden aching weariness seemed to come over her. Sataro felt, perhaps for the first time since their reunion, that this was something new in her wife she had never seen before. She held her tighter on instinct, her severe shape somehow still finding it's perfect fit around Vekna's full curves. In silence, Vekna pulled out the last knot, letting the scarf lie still and loose about Sataro's waist.
"They did not deserve you," she croaked, "None of them did, but their kin-rights were paramount in the end."
Ah.
Vekna looked down at the gold fabric in her hands. "The binding was literally set in stone, and still no one's claim of you was in doubt but mine."
Sataro made an animal sound, "Our vows were recorded in that court, did that not-.."
"What worth are a pagan barbarian's promises?" Vekna grinned through gritted teeth.
It was a look so hateful that some cautious reign about Sataro's heart snapped and steel wrapped her spine. Perhaps she needed to break something, what was a little brutality between them, after all? Sataro had always known what to do.
She wound her fingers into Vekna's long locks of greying red hair and pulled her gaze back, like it was hers to take. (And wasn't that true?) It wiped the awful grin from Vekna's face at least.
"Take it off," she ordered and Vekna, unblinking and transfixed, obligingly pulled the scarf away from Sataro's narrow waist and set it aside.
"The records are gone and no one alive remembers what that scrap of cloth means," this did hurt, it hurt them both, but Sataro drew Vekna's hands back around her as she continued, "but we are still here."
Vekna listened, and Sataro kept going.
"You conquered my death, and then you conquered time, no claim over me has won more of a right than yours. It outlasted empires and all meanings but ours."
In the stillness after, Sataro still worried for the three hundred years of a Vekna she had not known. There were new lines she could not see, new borders that might consider her trespasser, a distance of time that might prove so wide she'd lose her in it. She felt more a coward now than ever before in her already long life, but still, she had learned how to face a fear at some point in that time, she would still reach across the distance anyway.
And, apparently, Vekna had love in her for a new, ravenous, weary coward too. The words had lit a fire and slowly Vekna's eyes began burning a dangerous red and her breath against Sataro's mouth grew supernaturally hot as a touch of the old world's divinity purred in approval. Her smile returned, vile and hungry, but Sataro liked this one much better.
"That is true, isn't it." Vekna affirmed with a lion's satisfaction.
"Mhm," Sataro sighed, slumping back into Vekna's hold and giving into weariness once more, "and I hope I am a worthy prize for the effort. I am far more battered than before."
"Worth doing it all again," was snarled into her ear.
"Even worth my mother?"
Vekna gripped Sataro's jaw and she went limp into it, "No more talk about your mother, besides the crone died barely ten seasons afterwards."
"She did? H-"
Vekna slid her free, still burning hand under Sataro's remaining loose tunic and pressed into the skin of her back, making her hiss pleasantly.
"No more about your mother."
Sataro obeyed and chuckled fondly as Vekna so easily hefted her and rolled them both into their makeshift bed, undoing the past year of experience that had begun to make Sataro feel big and heavy.
Vekna kissed her this time, which felt new in some ephemeral way, and let her full body press Sataro into their makeshift mattress that barely softened the hard stone floor. Tension left the both of them, even softening Sataro's thin ligaments and tight chords as the weight of Vekna's breast pulled creases into her shirt and came to rest against Sataro's sternum. Their legs tangled, Sataro found the crease of Vekna's hip with her fingers and they both sighed.
"I still have more to dig out of you." Sataro murmured, as warning.
"So do I." Vekna promised in kind.

RPG Horror Story
I need to get this off my chest. Normally I would post this on reddit but one of the people I play with follows me on reddit and I am pretty sure none of them are on Tumblr.
I play in a dnd campaign that from the start was told was going to be dark, it involves things like smuggling, assassination, gaslighting.
I predicted that everyone would make dark, broody and edgy characters. So I made sure to make a tiefling bard who is a ray of sunshine, which probably made her the target of a lot of the dark stuff that happens.
Session 1 passed by without much trouble, but when we got to session 2, thatâs where things started to go wrong. Iâll have to introduce the cast to make this more understandable. We have:
DM
Bard
Wizard
Rogue
Warlock
Paladin
Me
Bard and I were told to get someone to open a certain door. I wanted to get them but Bard decided he would open the door himself. This led to plans being slightly delayed and things going wrong. After a fight, the person who we were supposed to get was livid. At this point Bard had to leave, so I was forced to take all the blame for what happened. I tried to help an old man who turned out to be a powerful wizard. Now my character has a grandfather who is also a powerful wizard, so this really tugged on her heartstrings. In the end, trying to help the wizard caused a major fuck up later down the line.
Next session, I had to blackmail someone into paying a debt for someone, once again with Bard. Now, my character hates all the things she has to do, but she wants to better this organization so she wanted to convince the person instead of actually blackmailing them. Let me tell you what Bard did to help.
Nothing.
He only came in to ask who a certain person was and because I didnât know exactly what the relationship between those two people are, I simply said they must have had history together because well⌠they know each other. In response I was called a pig because apparently the person who is in debt was their son. How was I supposed to know that?
Meanwhile, everyone keeps telling that I have a bleeding heart. Even my characters fiancĂŠ calls her scuffed.
Tensions are high between me and Paladin. We have a conversation where we agree that we can call each other out on our bullshit. I admitted that my character made mistakes, but she thought what she did was right in the moment. Paladin says he isnât worried about mistakes, but he is worried about her killing herself because of it. One thing he said, that if he needed to shut up, she should tell him to. This will come back later.
A couple sessions go by without anything really happening. But eventually we have to find the wizard again. After he was let go he had a shackle attached to his wrist so it would block magic. Now our Rogue who is built for insight and investigation⌠does not insight check this man at all. She has been insight checking every little thing, but not this man.
We tried to lead the old man into a false sense of security and then the Paladin just STABS him. We are level 4. We have to now fight against a wizard with level 5 spells. Now, he is at least a level 9 wizard, but knowing how my DM plays powerful characters, he would most likely be more akin to level 13 to 17.
Our Wizard, Rogue and Bard hide the entire fight, leaving the fight mostly up to me, the Warlock and Paladin. Still after my character risking their life, the man who yelled at her before claims that SHE is the reason all this happened.
During more sessions our gang loses access to the black market. So I thought: âHey if I can get access back to the black market, maybe the party will realize that I can do stuffâ. During downtime, I also tried to get a talk with a leader from a rival gang to hopefully help my group.
Now, to help the DM, I make character portraits for the npcs. I was told that the leader of a rival gang wouldnât show up this session. So I thought that I would have time to discuss things on what to do with the party, what to say to the leader to not fuck it up once again.
That session⌠I was called to that leader. I didnât get time to prepare, I was put on the spot. I was forced to take a deal where no matter what, we would be in debt to them. I chose the lesser of two evils.
The party proceeded to flip their shit. Paladin was yelling, Warlock was yelling in his own way which is by grumbling, even Rogue who barely raises their voice was yelling. I never got the chance to explain myself. I tried to get them to stop yelling but they just wouldnât budge.
Now, out of character, I had a talk with Paladin that yelling at me is something I do not appreciate because when I was young my parents would yell when they were angry and not let me give a chance to explain myself. He said he understood and that he wouldnât yell at me.
About two weeks before the session I described earlier, I got contacted by the DM and Paladin. Paladin wasnât having a good time playing his character because he felt like he had to walk on eggshells around me and asked if I would mind if he played his character how he wanted to. I said I didnât mind, thinking that he wouldnât yell at me because of what we discussed. Obviously I was wrong.
Now as Rogue, Warlock and Paladin are yelling at me, the DM is laughing his ass off. Paladin also starts laughing and he and DM start to say how DM read up on criminal psychology and how manipulators get people to do what they want.
At this point, I was on the verge of tears, but managed not to cry. Paladin, in character, walked out of the room to which our leader asked him what happened. Paladin responded with:
âCharacterâs name happened.â
We then got into a combat situation and had stop in the middle of that.
After the session, I asked Paladin if he would have yelled at Warlock and Rogue if the same manipulative situation had happened to them. He said yes, to which I responded that I find that very hard to believe. Paladin proceeds to tell me that he is sorry if I am taking this personally.
My character has been the punching bag this entire campaign, at what point is it still fun story telling? Is it my fault for wanting to play a more positive character in a darker campaign?
The DM said that a lot of the plot progression has happened because of my character, but it doesnât feel like I am doing something right when I just get yelled at by both npcs and the party.
Itâs gotten to the point where I donât even want to play the other dnd campaign I am in, even though that party is very positive about my character and are actively encouraging him to get into shenanigans.
My only choice seems to be to either keep playing my bard and be miserable, start playing a different character or just leave all together. I donât want to leave these people since I genuinely enjoy their company but I canât be the punching bag of this campaign anymore.
I honestly just have no idea where I went wrong with my character as I have actively been trying to prove that she can do things only to have the DM pull the rug out from under their feet to make them mess up again.
Should I just talk with them again? I honestly doubt they will listen since nothing has changed from our previous talks.
I suppose I can always play a character who is just as big of an asshole as the other party members are, although Iâm not sure that will solve anything.

Kenma's career as a popular streamer was one of the many facets of him that shocked you when youâd started dating two years ago. The two of you had first met in an Animal Crossing discord for your city meant for trading and making friends.
After you had gone over to his island to adopt Raymond from him, he let you keep all of your Nook Mile Tickets with the stipulation that you kept in contact with him to "give him updates" about how the cat villager was doing in his new home. His dorky way of trying to flirt with you was what made you pursue him in the first place, and somehow it had led to a very fulfilling relationship.
It was revealed early on that he was a streamer, but he never expanded on it regarding the actual numbers. Curiosity got the best of you one night, and you decided to google him. Besides also learning that he was a YouTuber, you found yourself in awe at the numbers he managed to accumulate across all of his social media.
And if that wasnât enough, he was also apparently the CEO of his own business.
Once you moved in together around the one-year mark of your relationship, you got to properly witness the amount of work put into streaming and maintaining a social media presence. This also meant that you got to read the wild comments that were left on all of his platformsâand see the occasional surprise nude picture whenever he opened up his DMs around you.
Because of this, Kenma sat you down to have a conversation about your potential appearance on his social media. You both decided by the end of it that his audience would get to know that he was in a committed relationship, but you agreed it would be best to not show your face or reveal any identifying information of yours.
It had been a year since having that conversation, and youâd both stuck to the agreement closely. The most his audience had ever seen of you was your hand whenever you refilled his water bottle for him.
Of course, it was hard sometimes, especially when you had to remain extra quiet around the house and refrain from yelling out a 'baaaabe' whenever you needed something from him, but since he had his own soundproof office, it lessened the room for any accidental error.
Overall, you were content with never showing your face to his audience for the rest of his career. You knew how nasty the internet could get because of their parasocial relationships with influencers and streamers alike, especially when they discovered those influencers and streamers had a partner who wasn't them, even if they knew they never had a chance. You weren't sure your skin was thick enough to deal with rabid angry stans.
Which is why it was so shocking when Kenma decided one day to nix the agreement.
You were in your shared bedroom answering some emails when he came in. He was dressed in a baggy hoodie, sweats, and tied-up hair; his typical look for a stream.
After some time, you noticed that he was still standing in the doorway, not saying anything. When you glanced up at him, you found him awkwardly toying with the strands of hair that had fallen out of his bun, looking down at the ground like he was just waiting for you to notice him.
"Is there something you need, baby?" you asked. "You're just standing there all adorably shy."
"Yeah, so, um, I'm going to be doing a 24-hour stream this weekend to raise money for charity."
"Oh, really? Cool! I guess that means I'll be going to bed alone that night," you joked.
"Yeah, I guess. Um..." He started before scrunching up his face like he was uncomfortable with what he planned to say next.
"What is it? Do you need me to stock up on snacks and energy drinks? Just send me a list. I can pick them up tomorrow."
"No, that's not it. I was thinking of making a stretch goal be you coming on stream so we can play Minecraft or Mario Kart or something...I mean, I totally understand if you don't feel comfortable. I could always replace it with something else. I know they've been wanting to see me dye my hair a bright color and dress up like an e-boy, so--"
"Really!?" you nearly yelled.
"What? That they want me to dress like an e-boy? Yeah, Kuroo said it wouldâ"
"No, I mean..." You tried to fight the confused expression that was growing on your face, but your squinted eyes gave you away. "You really want me on your stream? Like face and all?"
"....Yeah, I really want to be able to share this with you. But don't feel like you have to do it just to make me happy."
It was a large ask when looking at the full picture. Kenma had his fair share of fans and "stans" who lacked boundaries, as seen from a select few who visited your home several times this year, or the handful that found you on social media already just from seeing a glimpse of your college ring on the hand wrapped around Kenma's water bottle.
There could be a chance you could receive direct hate on your social media just because you were a person who dated a popular streamer. You would then be in the public eye with little privacy and have a magnifying glass on all of your actions and words. Anything you did would then reflect on Kenma.
What if you messed something up and then Kenma lost viewers? Would they try to cancel you or him for it?
You backed away from all the negative thoughts before you could spiral and looked at the metaphorical 'pro' column.
If you agreed to appear on his stream, you would no longer have to sneak around your house in fear of being heard or showing up in his face cam. You both wouldn't have to feel guilty playing games off-camera with each other because you knew Kenma could be streaming it instead.
And who knew? Maybe his fans would like you. You had to admit, it would be a nice ego boost knowing that you were accepted by so many people.
And, most importantly: you could physically ask him in person what he wanted for dinner instead of texting him and waiting an hour for a break so he could respond, while you sat in the next room, starving, stuck in an endless cycle of wondering whether you should make a snack or if you should just hold off for dinner.
Maybe this was a good idea.
"Okay,â you decided, âI'll do it."
"Oh... alright. Cool." Kenma was trying his hardest not to show how excited he was that you agreed. When he saw the contemplative look on your face, he was sure you would decide that it'd just be too much work and say no. But hearing you agree made him giddier than he would ever admit to.
Despite the cool and collected façade he thought he was putting on, you saw the smile that threatened to break through and the red tips of his ears. You wondered if he felt the same weight being lifted off his shoulders as you did, knowing that, after this weekend, you'd both be finally out as an official couple to the world.
And, of course, the nausea of having to do all of it live in front of thousands of people. No biggie.
Saturday afternoon came and at 12pm sharp, Kenma began his grueling 24-hour charity stream. The bar had an overall goal of $150,000, and it began filling up at a constant pace right from the start. Donations ranging from $5 to $500 were flowing in rapidly, and you were trying your best not to feel nervous.
You both agreed that if he reached $50,000 within 5 hours, you would join him for an hour or two of Minecraft later that night. Part of you hoped that the donations would slow down and plateau for a bit, but when you saw Kuroo had donated $1000, specifically with the message that he hoped to see you on stream soon, you realized that it was a pipe dream.
So, you had to be your own hype person for now, to get prepared to show your face to thousands of people and not disappoint Kenma.
Whether it was the promise of your face reveal or the people who genuinely adored charity, it took only four hours for Kenma to break $50,000.
When he saw the number update live on stream, the viewers witnessed the most amount of expression Kenma had ever shown: eyes wide as saucers, mouth slightly agape, body frozen. You could see the gears struggling inside his head struggling to turn and comprehend what they all managed to do so early on in the stream.
"Thanks so much, everyone, for being so generous today... I guess this means we'll be having my partner on later tonight," he announced. You watched his chat explode with excitement, his special emotes flying in the chat.
You picked up your phone to shoot Kenma a quick text.
[you]:: hope you're ready to put our minecraft beds together in front of thousands of people đ
Unsurprisingly, he left you on read. But dating him for this long meant you weren't even a little bit afraid of double or triple texting.
[you]:: maybe we can kiss under the light of an exploding creeper đŤ
[you]:: or have a romantic walk through our rainbow sheep while a phantom looms overhead đĽ°
It was after the third text when you finally saw him pick up his phone to text you back. You eagerly awaited his response, only to cackle when you read it.
[my sugar daddy]:: im going to replace you with hinata as my partner if you dont stop
Instead of annoying him any further, you set your phone to charge on your nightstand and went into the bathroom to get ready for the stream later.
Once you emerged, you picked up your phone to check the percentage and noticed a text from Kenma stating that he'd have you on at 8pm. You decided to spend the time until then cooking up some dinner for the both of you.
It seemed like time flew by because by the time you were done eating your food, it was 7:45pm. Only fifteen more minutes before you were live in front of all of Kenma's supporters. You refilled your water bottle and sat on the couch, staring at the blank T.V. as you practically dissociated from reality until Kenma came out of his office to retrieve you.
You noticed that he looked just as nervous as you did, despite his face not showing it the way yours did. His shoulders were up to his ears with tension, and his hoodie drawstring was pulled almost all the way through due to him fiddling with it.
He turned briefly to you after he brought you into his office, gesturing to make sure you knew to wait until he gave you the cue. He sat down, unmuted himself, and took down the 'away' screen he had for his audience.
This was it. Everything was going to change in literally ten seconds.
"Well, everyone...please welcome my partner, (Y/N)."
You walked cautiously around his large gaming chair and sat next to him in your modest desk chair that he had rolled into the room for the occasion.
Okay, you thought to yourself, now don't fuck this up.
"Hi, everyone."
Nailed it.
There was a painful moment of silence before the stream finally caught up, and you both heaved a sigh of relief when you saw nothing but declarations of excitement. Amongst the 'AHHHs' and spam of emotes were sweet comments about your appearance and how cute you two looked as a couple. You peeked over at Kenma and saw the ghost of a smile on his lips, elated to know that he was just as relieved as you were.
"Okay, let's start with the gameplay while we answer some questions," he said.
The questions and gameplay started out mild; when did you both start dating, how did you meet, who asked the other out first. They even asked a few simple questions about you specifically, like your favorite anime and your star sign. And while you did see a few bans in the chat after some inappropriate questions âno, you will not tell them the color of your underwearâ most were easy and simple enough to answer.
Then they started to get a bit spicier.
"Bokutoslefttit donated $69.69 and asked, 'what is your main pet peeve with Kenma?'" he read, muttering a 'wow' under his breath at the username.
"Ooh, how can I be polite when exposing you?" you pondered while beating a cow to death with your sword. "It's probably how loud he gets whenever he's playing games with his good headphones on."
"I don't get loud," he defended.
"Oh yeah, you do. I've had to come in here several times to tell you to shut up like I'm your mother. I did it literally two days ago when you were playing with Lev."
"... Next question."
You rolled your eyes at his lack of comment but glanced over at the chat to pull up a new question. You stifled a laugh when you read, "Girlboss420 asked 'who has a fatter ass, Kuroo or (Y/N)?'"
"I'm not answering that."
"Come oooon, this is a Q&A. Can't have the Qâs without the Aâs."
"Nope."
You were about to start reprimanding him for implying that Kuroo's ass was fatter than yours when you noticed he ran past you with a group of pillagers following closely behind. You turned to head into the house but when you opened the door, you noticed it was blocked off by obsidian.
"You are the absolute worst!" you exclaimed.
You made a break for it, sprinting past the shooting pillagers and around to the front of the house. You made it inside with only 2 hearts to spare. You turned, in real life, to Kenma to see him tight-lipped to avoid smiling about his betrayal.
"I'm moving my bed downstairs for the rest of the stream."
You both carried on with the stream without another incident, turning to the chat every now and again to answer some questions. Kenma even apologized to you by bringing home a horse that was named "I'm sorry."
It was about an hour and a half after you sat down when Kenma decided that he needed a bathroom break. Your heart fell to your ass when you realized that you'd be all alone to entertain his chat. You considered saying that you needed to pee as well, if it meant not having the spotlight on you.
Instead, when he got up to pee, you smiled and asked him to bring you back a snack and a refill. Oh, how the turns have tabled.
In the meantime, you decided to scroll through the chat and some of the donations to pick out another question to answer since Kenma was gone. You were initially looking for a funny or vulgar comment when you saw one that had a completely different vibe.
"Kermithateblog donated $25.00 and asked, 'what's your favorite part about being with Kenma?' Wow, that's a really sweet question. Let me think for a moment."
You paused to reflect on your relationship with Kenma over the two years youâd been together. You'd had your fair share of highs and lows like any other couple, but, in the end, you both learned how to work things out so you were both equally as happy in the relationship.
"So, as you guys know, he's a busy boy with streaming, creating content for YouTube, and also being a CEO of his own company, which all takes up the majority of his time," you began. "But when he finally can shut off his screens and crawls into bed late at night, I know that he's 100% there with me at that moment. He is able to give me his undivided attention and make me feel like his love for me comes above his love for gaming."
You gave a pause, trying not to get too emotional. You rarely got the chance to gush about Kenma because you knew how much he hated having attention on him, so if this was going to be your only opportunity to do so for a while, then you were going to take it.
"What y'all don't know is that he is the biggest baby when it comes to cuddling," you laughed. "He is absolutely the little spoon most of the time, and he loves when I stroke his hair and love on him all night. In a weird way, it makes me feel special and loved knowing that he trusts me enough to be vulnerable with me. I cherish the amount of time we have together because of that."
What you didn't know was that he had come back from refilling your water bottle rather quickly and stood outside the doorway to hear your speech. His heart almost burst when he heard your tender words describing how he made you feel. He knew that you rarely got to hear how much those quiet moments at night meant to him because he was guarded with his feelings.
Which is why he started into the room on a mission.
You smiled as soon as you saw him. "Welcome back, babe, we were just talking about--"
He approached you swiftly and leaned down to press a gentle kiss on your forehead. You hardly even got to bask in the moment before he was pulling away, setting down your water bottle as he sat back down with his controller in hand like he didn't just expose to his audience how much of a softy he really was.
It was in that moment when you realized how glad you were that youâd decided to appear on stream because you'd be able to look back at that clip over and over again to relive the intimate moment.
Noon on Sunday came at last. Kenma would finally be free from the prison of his office. Not to mention he could finally get off his ass and stretch.
Between your official appearance on stream and the sign-off, you popped in a few more times to say hello to the chat when you brought him some snacks and drinks. You stayed up through most of the night, although you accidentally napped for a few hours during the dead of night which gave you a little boost in energy.
In the end, the stream was a monumental success. Kenma had even managed to blow past his goal of $150k and make it to over $200k, which meant that he'd be getting the full e-body makeover for his next week of streams.
By the time Kenma came into your bedroom after freshening up and having a small snack, you were already dead asleep with your laptop propped open to show his now offline stream.
He tip-toed around the bed quietly, closed your laptop, pulled the covers up and over your curled-up body, and slipped in himself. As he settled, he felt you shift and grab at his worn t-shirt, opening your eyes slightly just to confirm that it's him.
He pulled you against his chest tightly, his body finally able to relax. He was sure it wouldn't be too long before he completely fell out.
"That was more fun than I thought it'd be," he heard you utter quietly.
"I'm glad you enjoyed yourself." His fingers gently danced across your shoulder blades as you mushed your face into his clean shirt. "I can't believe we raised so much today so quickly."
"I'm so proud of you, baby. You worked so hard on this."
"I also donated $2000 anonymously to speed up the process," he mumbled sheepishly, pressing a gentle kiss on the crown of your head in hopes to lessen the blow of his secret.
It was quiet for a moment, and he wondered if heâd genuinely pissed you off before he felt the vibrations from your laugh against his chest.
"...I can't wait to ruin your hair, e-boy."

The only thing you could hear were voices from afar and a sniffing little voice next to you as darkness surrounded you.
What in the world just happened?
Suddenly, everything came back at you.
,,DADDY, MOMMY IS AWAKE!â the snorting sound gasped, opening the door and letting the bright light come in again.
,,Mc!â Jumin said before he entered the room a bit later, closing the door and turning on the light.
Luckily, it was a much dimmer light.
,,How are you, my love?â he asked you.
You looked around as reality hit you. ,,Where is⌠my baby? Jumin, where is our son?â you asked him.
Jumin stroked your head and began to tear up.
,,I know that this is hard on you, Mc, but you need to tell me what happened⌠My men are already working on finding him but⌠you need to tell me everything you rememberâŚââ
And so you began to tell him how you walked hand in hand with your children and the bodyguards from the playground and how suddenly you heard the bodyguards yell.
,,Everything went by so fast⌠I took our daughter in one arm and grabbed our son to run away, but⌠someone grabbed him! And, I tried to pull him! I yelled for help but⌠I donât know how, but I fell and he let go of my hand and⌠thatâs all I rememberâŚââ you confessed, crying in your husbands arms.
,,We will find him, we willâŚââ
Days went by and no call came; no one who wanted money or anything.
But suddenly, a call arrived.
And so, you disappeared with a lot of money to the requested place on your own, leaving your daughter in Zenâs care.
You didnât even tell Jumin, who did his everything with his bodyguards.
But little did you know that Zen had already informed Seven, who continued to track you down and informed Jumin later on.
And indeed, when you arrived, Jumin and his bodyguards were already at the place, a few men in their care and a crying boy in his fatherâs arms.
,,My⌠baby!â you hiccuped and jumped towards him, hugging him too.
,,I will never let anything happen to you againâŚ!â
Jumin tightened the security and even found out that the kidnappers randomly decided to kidnap a kid, finding out later that they caught a rich kid.
Perhaps, a big mistake for their lives.
Zen
,,Hyun, donât let her out of your sight,â you warned him, stroking the head of the infant sleeping in your arms.
,,I wonât. Iâm her daddy,â he whispered before kissing you and your sleeping daughter.
,,Princess, letâs go to the mall!â Zen said to your older daughter in a whisper as to not wake up the baby.
,,Why is mommy staying at home with the baby?â
,,Baby, sheâs staying at home with the baby,â Zen corrected her and stroked her head.
,,Because your little sister has a fever and mommy needs to stay home to make her feel better,â Zen explained.
The little girl accepted the explanation and walked happily together with her dad through the little street with the little shops on the side.
,,You didnât buy that much, Princess,â Zen wondered after carrying four full bags of clothes, toys, chocolate, and decorating stuff for you.
,,Daddy! Mommy said a little!â she lectured him.
Suddenly, a few girls began to yell and apparently spotted Zen, who became pretty famous in the last few years.
,,Seri-ah, stay with Daddy, okay?â Zen told the little girl who nodded.
However, more and more fans arrived and saw Zen, which led to chaos.
,,Daddy! Daddy!â The girl screamed suddenly.
Zenâs heart was shattering when he saw how someone had his daughter on his back, carrying her away from him while she was trying to get off.
,,LET ME GO! MOVE! MOVE! MY DAUGHTER IS GETTING KIDNAPPED!ââ he cried and screamed into the crowd, trying to get away from the fans.
However, his screams got overturned by the fans and they stopped him from saving his daughter.
,,Mr Ryu, I need you to work with us,ââ the officer said to Zen, who was sitting on the cold ground.
The stuff his daughter bought all over the floor, broken, and ready to go to the trash after people stepped on it.
He was in a trance.
Only your voice could make him look up.
,,Mc⌠Iâm sorry,ââ he sobbed and jumped up, hugging you.
Like a little baby, he cried into your chest as you let your tears fall onto his white hair.
Days went by and no one called.
Zen was getting questioned increasingly by the day, but it never led to anything.Â
,,I canât wait any longer,ââ he hissed, one day.
The RFA was currently at his house, Seven sitting at the table, trying to figure out where that man came from.
,,You donât have to,ââ he said suddenly.
Thatâs how it began.
Instead of telling the police, Seven, Zen, and Yoosung went to where the GPS led them. With the help of Juminâs closest bodyguards, they stormed the place.
,,Whatever your reason was,ââ Zen said while he was holding his bloody daughter, ,,as of today, you will regret ever thinking of harming her,ââ he whispered, handing Yoosung his weak daughter and beginning to torture the man who almost killed his daughter.
Yoosung
,,DADDY!ââ the blond man heard, jumping up from the couch and panting.
Cold sweat was dripping down his forehead.
A short glance over to your hospital bed showed him that you were still sleeping.
It was no wonder that after getting beaten up, everyone would sleep that long.
Slowly, without making a sound, Yoosung got up and stepped out of the white room, which was making him crazy.
Just when he closed the door, his phone rang in his pocket, making him fumble the gadget out as quickly as possible.
It was either the police or Seven, and no matter who it was, one of them had good or bad news about the whereabouts of his daughter.
,,Seven,ââ Yoosung said firmly over the phone.
,,I found her. Come out right now. I will pick you up and we will save her, but donât tell Mc,ââ Seven shortly said and cut the call.
Of course Yoosung didnât lose any time on going out of the hospital and running up and down in the parking lot where his red haired friend picked him up in one of his cars.
,,Take this and wear this,ââ he said, handing him a gun and bulletproof jacket.
Yoosung was prepared for the worst and just accepted the equipment.
A few moments later, which seemed like an eternity to him, they arrived.
,,The CCTV says that theyâre here,ââ Seven showed him on a map of the building.
,,We will enter from down here,ââ he showed him the place, ,,and move this way,ââ he went on, making Yoosung follow his finger with his eyes.
And so they went. Not losing a single moment, both of them walked the way they agreed on.
,,Daddy⌠daddyâŚ.ââ he heard a faint voice sobbing.
The little voice he missed so much, was filled with pain. The single thought about her being in pain made his blood boil.
,,Wait till we have her and then you can shoot as much as you want,ââ Seven said, throwing something into the crowd and fetching the girl as quickly as possible.
,,Assholes,ââ Yoosung said, his violet eyes filled with hate as he hit the man once again and shot at him a third time.
,,Hope you survive with the pain,ââ he said and vanished with Seven from the bloody place, his daughter now in his arms.
Jaehee
,,Iâm sorry, Mc. I couldnât save him,ââ Jaehee said at your grave.
The last thing you begged of her was to save your son before you died in the hospital due to the injuries the kidnappers gave you.
However, Jaehee couldnât save either you or her son.
Instead, both of you died right in front of her eyes. What did life matter anymore?ââ
With this question, she sat down on your grave, her back leaned against your stone while she looked up to your smiling picture.
The last time you smiled went through her head.
How you begged her to save him, her son, and how much you cried the day he was pulled out of your embrace.
Just a few moments earlier, you guys were laughing in the shop, when men in black barged in, shooting in your coffee shop and yelling for money.
Of course, just as every mother would do, you tried to cover your son with your body while she gathered the money out of the cash drawer.
However, life never went like Jaehee wished and the men shot you.
The last thing Jaehee saw was then your bloody body over your crying son, who got pulled away from you and disappeared.
A few days later, when she finally got the call, the day she left you to go and catch your happiness again, just to see him dying in front of her.
Blood over his face, Jaehee couldnât recognize him anymore if it wasnât for his tiny voice begging her to run.
,,Baby⌠Mommy is hereâŚââ she whispered, stepping closer to the boy hanging.Â
,,Run-ââ he begged.
A loud bang followed and his last scream was when everything turned even redder and darker.
,,Jaehee-ââ you gasped when you saw her entering your room with his dead body.
It was the last time she ever heard you before you died from a heart attack.
,,I killed you both,ââ Jaehee cried and held the gun at her temple.
,,At least, I will kill myself too nowâŚââ she sobbed louder.
The loud gunshot was almost a little noise below the pouring rain as blood dropped on the green grass surrounding your grave.
Saeyoung
The fight was supposed to be over, he thought as he watched your lifeless figure on the bed.
The only thing that reminded him that you were alive were the sobs which left your mouth.
Nothing more.
You hadnât eaten in days and you never got up either.
Saeyoung knew the next person he would lose would be you.
Suddenly Saeran called him, making him turn around in the big room and approach his brother who was sitting in front of a balck computer.
,,I think I got something. Letâs go and check it out,ââ he whispered.
Saeyoung was about to lose hope, but this last chance made his cold heart grow warmer.
Without telling you anything, he left, ready to fight once again. His father, the man who tried to once again destroy his happiness.
,,You guys finally arrived,ââ the white haired man laughed, him sitting on the chair, the lifeless body of his daughter on his lap.
,,You asshole. If sheâs dead, I will-ââ
,,Then do it,ââ he laughed, throwing her into the middle of the room as if she was an old bag.
,,You arrived too late,ââ he began.
,,You guys should have let the story die. If you would have done it like that, she would have survived,ââ he said while Saeyoung was still looking at her.
The face, which he only knew with a smile implanted on was pale and as white as the wall.
,,What did you doâŚ?ââ he asked him, hate, despair and sadness in Saeyoungâs voice.
,,I played with her, just like a grand-ââ
Saeyoung didnât let him end his sentence and shot him there where he was the most vulnerable.
,,Asshole, you will go through much worse pain,ââ he hissed. Not even Saeran could recognize his brother while he began to beat up the man who killed his daughter and probably would make you die too...

I do not have time for this.
Vernon swung through the air, landing nimbly on the road just a few feet behind the newest menace that had decided to grace his neighborhood with its presence. The self-proclaimed Rhinoâbasically a guy in a rhinoceros suit, as the name suggestedâwas tearing down 108th street at breakneck speed, which was almost as fast as Vernon mid-swing. Almost.
âHey, slow down!â he called as he launched himself towards the suited man, and a little kid with a lollipop gaped as Spider-Man swung right towards the Rhino, legs stretched straight before him. âTsk, how are we supposed to tango if I canât even keep up?â
Rhino roared when Vernon dropkicked him right in the middle of his back, but the kick didnât put him out of commission like Vernon had hoped it would. The villain (and Vernon used the term loosely) swung his fist towards him, but he flipped backwards, landing on top of a car, which dented under the force.
âWhy is it always Queens?â Vernon asked, annoyed, as Rhino charged towards him. He pushed off the car to avoid Rhino, who crashed headfirst into the vehicle, sending shards of glass flying everywhere. Right next to it, a yellow Kiaâs alarm went off. Vernon, now hanging from the building behind it, huffed. âAnd why is it always right before school?â
And a Monday, too. Vernon usually allowed for supervillains busting down his metaphorical door on mornings, but Mondays were usually off-limits. Honestly, what kind of villain gets up at seven a.m. on a Monday?
Vernon scaled the brick wall of the building, looking for a high vantage point he could drop down from, but even the little effort seemed to tire him out more than usual. Having studied until late night the day before, right after stopping a third try at a robbery on seventy-third (honestly, do these people never learn?), he had only managed to catch about three hours of sleep. It was normal by Spidey standards, but not by Vernon standards. Especially when he was supposed to have a test in first period biology.
âSpider-Man!â Rhino bellowed from three storeys below, snapping Vernon back to the present. He sighed as man demolished another car, no doubt to show off his might or strength or whatever it was villains loved to show off these days. âFace me!â
Vernon looked down. In the morning, everything was awash with sunlight, including Rhino. The suit was a dark gray but didnât seem to be made of metal, looking about three to four inches thick like some kind of hide-like body armor, and light glinted off the visor that only half-showed his adversaryâs face. If he hadnât been about to be pummeled to death by the guy in rhinoceros suit, he would have appreciated the beautiful workmanship more. The horn was a nice touch.
âIf you just wanted to see me, an email would have been fine!â Vernon called, letting go of the wall and righting himself in free-fall as he hurtled towards the Rhino. âNo need to put on a show for little olâ meââ
Okay. Maybe he had miscalculated the distance or maybe Rhino was less distracted than he thought, because instead of him dropping in on the villain like a ton of bricks, Rhino swung his suited arm, catching Vernon in the chest with bone-shattering force, and sent him flying.
Vernon hit the sidewalk with enough force for his body to skid a few feet before coming to a rest. His backpack (which had somehow not been torn to shreds) absorbed most of the blow, but the impact had knocked the wind out of him, and he lay there for a few seconds, wondering if he should just stay down. His head was already pounding, and a sleepy spider was a grumpy spider.
He changed his mind at the last moment as Rhinoâs fist swung towards his face, and he flipped onto his back, jumping out of the way just as the fist came down where he had been lying milliseconds ago. Beneath the mask, Vernonâs eyes widened as he saw the blow break the asphalt.
I really do not have time for this.
âWhat the heck is that suit even made of?â he muttered as he dodged another blow, trying to work out a way to subdue Rhino as fast as possible. The suit was big and heavy, which usually made for slower reactions, and a good old webbing-down would have been the perfect way to wrap up the show, but if the suit was strong enough, even his web fluid wouldnât hold. Vernon had to knock him out somehow.
âWouldnât you like to know?â Rhino made a throaty, hacking sound like could have been laughter. âUnfortunately, you will be dead before you can even get close enough.â
âYou know, it doesnât have to be this way,â Vernon said, dodging yet another attack, resulting in Rhinoâs head getting stuck in the cracked windshield of a car for a moment. God, that guy was like a battering ram. He couldnât keep this up forever. âWe can always sit down and talk about this.â
âSpider-Man, Iâll kill you!â
âIâll take that as a no, then.â Vernon raised his wrists, aiming at the car. Thwip-thwip, went the fluid from his web shooters, trapping the Rhino against the side of the vehicle. âShame,â he said, as the man thrashed against his web restraints. âI know a really good taco place around here.â
The Rhino yelled, lifting the entire car bodily. Vernon watched as he raised the car over his head, the webbing breaking from the strain of the suit against them, and threw it directly at him.
Ah, crap.
Vernon would like to think he would have managed to get away from there in time even if someone hadnât snatched him up into the air, but he doubted it. There was something majestic about watching a villain heâd underestimated lift a whole car up to throw at him.
The person caught him under the arms and lifted him into the air, away from the enraged roar of the Rhino that resounded throughout the street. Vernonâs first reaction to being picked cleanly off the road would be fear, but his spider sense hadnât gone off yet. He tried to look up at his captor/savior, but the back of his head collided with something hard. âOw,â he mumbled. âWho the hell are you?â
âThe guy who just saved your ass, webhead,â the boy replied derisively. Or at least it sounded like a boy, very much like those guys in the cafeteria who used to drop snide remarks behind Vernonâs back pre-spider bite. The guy dropped him on the roof of a shorter building, and Vernon rolled out of the way, getting to his feet. The boy was dressed in a metallic-looking dark blue-and-gold suit, a bucket-like helmet over his head. The lower of his face was uncovered, exposing lips twisted into a scowl. âIâm not even getting a thank-you?â
ââŚthanks,â Vernon muttered after scrutinizing the guy for a moment. âUh, who are you actually?â
âIâm Nova, creep.â
âNova Creep.â He considered this. âInteresting.â
âJust Nova!â the boy snapped, sounding even more displeased than before. âNow if youâll excuse me, I have to get back to my team and save the frickinâ neighborhood.â
Saying this, he turned and took off again, no doubt heading for wherever the action was. Vernon watched him go, choosing to take a breather instead of following him back down.
New superheroes in town? It wasnât unheard of, and Vernon had had his fair share of newbies and oldies both to deal with in his year-long career as Queensâs friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
He looked down over the edge of the roof. Sure enough, there were three of themâa girl in a white suit, moving around the wreckage like an acrobat and slashing at the Rhinoâs suit, Nova Creep shooting fist lasers (Flight powers and fist lasers? Unfair.) at him, andâwas that Iceman?
Vernon hesitated. He could join the fight and help finish it more quickly, but if Iceman was here, the X-Men couldnât be farther away. He could leave the three to it and get to school in time to catch forty winks before class, no harm done. Was he even needed?
Unfortunately, he knew he was only giving himself the illusion of choice. Spider-Man never walked away from a fight, even if someone more capable was dealing with it.
He shot webs at the metal post hanging out from the opposing building and swung back down, joining the fight just as Rhino caught the girl around the middle like he had Vernon, sending her flying back into an already wrecked car. Vernon cushioned her landing with webs, managing to protect her body from the broken metal chassis, and she was back on her feet in seconds, joining his side.
âThanks,â she said, which surprised him. Most superheroes didnât take the time out to thank him, but that was usually unnecessary, since they evened out the score by saving his life. âYou know this guy?â
âNah, heâs new in town,â he replied, watching Nova and Iceman fight the Rhino. Iceman froze him from the legs to his waist, but it didnât hold for long before Rhino broke through the ice. âStrong, though, Iâll give him that.â
âItâs the suit,â the girl told him. Now that they were up close, Vernon could see that her costume somewhat resembled a white tiger, with the pointed ears and yellow eyes. He wondered if sheâd been bitten by a radioactive white tiger. âItâs made of some kind of polymer.â
âPolymer?â he echoed, even more surprised. Heâd assumed metal.
âSelf-regenerating,â she affirmed. âItâs not indestructibleâI slashed through the hide with my claws, butââ
âYour claws?â
She raised her hand. Under the white glove, her nails extended into wicked, claw-like tips. âCool,â he said, voice cracking halfway through the word. He cleared his throat. âVery Woverine-ish.â
âHeâs a mutant,â she said dismissively. What was he supposed to call her? Tigerwoman? Tigergirl? âRhinoâs suit regenerates. We have to knock him out.â
âYeah, I figured that one out,â Vernon muttered.
âA little help here?!â Nova yelled, zipping through the air in a zigzag manner to avoid the Rhinoâs hits. âOr are you two going to stand around and chat all day?â
Vernonâs lips twitched into an unintentional smile. âIâll web him up,â he told tiger lady. âYou think Nova can pull him up?â
Tiger inclined her head. âNot on his own, but with a little frosty boostâŚâ
âGreat.â He sprinted towards the group, shooting webs at the Rhinoâs head to get his attention and distract him from the others. âHey, Hippo! Over here!â
The Rhino ripped off the webbing from his visor, not wasting a moment before charging him. Vernon lunged, wrapping the Rhino suit up in webs as he scaled the wall, trapping him in the web fluid. It wouldnât hold for long, he knewâbut he only needed a few seconds. And some blind faith.
The excessive webbing wrapped around Rhino like a net trap, and Vernon pulled, lifting him into the air with as much strength as he could muster. Below him, Iceman froze a column of ice under the Rhinoâs butt, giving him a little extra height. Ten feetâŚtwenty feetâŚ
âTiger!â Vernon yelled.
She lunged, pushing off the hood of a dented car to give her extra height, and ripped through the thin web holding him up with her claws. Rhino plummeted to the ground, crashing into a car and through it, the fall only broken by the ground, the asphalt cracking beneath the force.
Vernon watched him anxiously. The suit should have been heavy enough to render the man inside unconscious, unless he had a really good cushioning system in place.
He counted to ten in his head. Rhino didnât move.
Thank god for bad cushioning, Vernon thought, swinging back down to the ground. âYou guys think you could carry him?â he asked the three. Iceman didnât even look over, broodily watching the unconscious villainâs body. Oh well. âHeâs a heavy hitter.â
âWe could make it back to S.H.I.E.L.D. with him,â Tiger said. Then she glanced at him, cocking her head in a perplexed manner. âWait, why do youââ
âI gotta run.â He shrugged sheepishly, adjusting the straps of his bag, which had only undergone minimal damage. The wonders never ceased. âYou see, Iâm late to first period biology.â
Vernon crashed through the doors of his school so fast he almost ploughed down Joshua, who had been standing just before the entrance, probably waiting for him.
The journey hadnât taken more than a few minutesâhe tried not to change clothes in suspicious-smelling service alleys as much as possible, but some situations left him no choiceâbut he only had a few minutes to get to class, and detention was something he couldnât afford to get. He hated disappointing Aunt May more than he hated getting his ass beat by some B-list villain.
âHey, hey, hey, relax,â Joshua said, righting him. The hallways were almost empty, but not quite, indicating that he wasnât too late to the not-party. The boy fixed his glasses, giving Vernon a look. âDid you get into a fight?â
Vernon blinked at him. âWhat? No. This guy called Rhinoââ
âShh.â Joshua dragged him to one side, away from earshot of the general populace of Midtown High, and gave him a concerned look. âDude, your face is bleeding.â
Joshua was one of the only few individuals in the world who knew about Vernonâs identity as Spider-Man, which was just as well, because if it hadnât been for his blue-haired best friend he would have walked into a test with his nose gushing like a bloody geyser. âThanks,â he mumbled, when Joshua handed him a clean-looking handkerchief. He raised it to his face. âDid you wipe your nose on this?â
Joshua made a face. âNot that I remember.â
âGood enough.â He cleaned off the blood as well as he could, which was hard, because he was feeling jittery and apparently his hands agreed. âDo I look fine?â
âYou never look fine, my friend,â his friend said sagely. âBut you look like you always do, so I guess, yes.â
Vernon shot him a grim smile, and started down the corridor towards 12-B, which was where he was supposed to be in ten minutes. He wasnât even late, actually, but Mr. Malkin didnât need a big excuse to give someone a C+ for a tardy warning. Joshua followed close behind. âSo, which guy beat you up this time?â
âI didnât get beat up.â Vernon rolled his eyes. âWell, not entirelyââ
âVernon Parker, report to room 10-A.â Both the boysâ heads whipped up towards the source of the sound, which came as an announcement from the speakers. âVernon Parker, room 10-A, please.â
âWhat?â Vernon whirled on Joshua, panicked. The blue-haired boyâs eyes were wide behind his glasses, but he only shrugged in response. âBut the test!â
He tried to think back to anything wrong he might have done in the past few weeks to get called aside like this, but he couldnât think of anything. Plus, he hadnât been summoned to the principalâs office, which confused him even more. Why room 10-A?
âNow youâve had it, Parker,â Flash Thompson said as he passed them, grinning.
Vernon scowled at his retreating back, his grip tightening around the bag strap. âWhatever,â he muttered, then threw Joshua his bag. âTake it to the class, wonât you? Iâll try to get back as soon as I can.â
Without waiting for affirmation, he jogged off to find room 10-A, wanting to get whatever it was over with so he would get back on time. When he got there, the room was empty except for a lady in a pencil skirt and jacket, holding a clipboard in her hand. Upon his entry, she smiled at him in a friendly way, which only served to tick him off further.
âWhatever this is, couldnât I do it some other time?â he pleaded. He hadnât seen this staff member before, but he didnât seem to be in trouble, and his grades had enough pull to get him out of some random appointment before classes. âI have a test in like, five minutes.â
âDonât worry, Iâve already talked to your teacher about this,â the woman said, continuing to smile. She gestured to one of the seats. âTake a seat.â
Reluctantly, he obliged, not really having an excuse not to now. âWhat is this, exactly?â he asked. Now that panic had taken a backseat, doubt was beginning to creep in. Why only him? And how had he never seen this woman before?
âIn light of recent events, the school has decided to start counselling sessions for all of the students to help them cope,â she said. She had a really nice smile, her skin tan and unblemished, cheeks dimpled. âIâm Melia Fox,â she said. âI just need to ask you a few questions, and you can be on your way.â
He stared back at her, miffed. A year of incidents, and they suddenly decided to have counselling sessions now? âWhy just me?â he asked slowly. âIâm sorry, but isnât there some kind of rule or protocol forââ
âThere is,â said a new voice. Vernon whipped around, and there at the end of the classroom, where moments ago had been nothing but air, stood a tall black man with an eyepatch. âAnd Agent Fox is following it.â
Vernon gaped. âIâwhat?â
âSpider-Man,â Nicky Fury said, with a note of muted resolution in his voice, âwe need to have a little chat.â

So I had my first bad and overtly sexualized experience when playing D&D last night. And I can't sleep until I write it out.
For context, I had decided to start looking for an other group to meet with (online of course) about a month ago. Within the last week I found a group that was in my time zone, and seemed to be an ok fit. When I added my character to the DNDBeyond campaign page I noticed that my character was the only one listed as female. Now I know that people can play whatever gender of character they want, but just the general vibe I got from my few messages with the DM lead me to believe that the players were all playing characters their same gender. I also learned that I was going in as the least experienced of the group, as well as being the only player who was not able to meet with the DM beforehand to run through character details. I was going in mostly uninformed. I immediately knew that this was going to be a lot more difficult than my previous campaign. I was a woman surrounded by men, playing a game that is gatekept by men, and stereotypically played by only men. My thoughts and mindset to not show weakness or inexperience and to prove that was just as good of a player as any of the rest of them did not however prepare me for the session.
First thing we did was describe our characters after we where given our roles within the group. This immediatly made me have to make some major chapter changes because I had planned for a more light-hearted character this go around, but the position she was given required her to not only be aged up but also her alignment changed. So I was already a little on edge and even more unprepared. I had known before how I wanted my character to act in general situations, but now, my overall plan was thrown out the window. The motivation I had put down for my character no longer applied. If my character had nothing to strive for, did I have anything to play with?
Within the first few minutes of the session, as a new group of people, the DM had our characters go through some "bonding activities". My character and another had an arm restling match, which my character lost in one role (7 to an 11). Two other characters bonded by teasing one of the other members of the group, a high born water genasi. Generally that went well except for the fact that the DM, when describing the towel the two were using to taunt the character with he described it as a rough towel, but not just any type of rough, rough like there was dried cum in it. This comment made me immediatly uncomfortable. We were within five minutes of this session starting (the first of the campaign!) and the DM was already making sexual comments. I think I probably would have still been uncomfortable if my other DM, who I have known for close to 7 years, had made that description. I let the comment slide, hoping that maybe it was a slip up on the DMs part and he would remember he was with strangers.
The next incident that happened was when the party entered the town tavern and there was a fight. Our warlock used thamaturgy to make each punch and slap sound louder than they actually were. The DM initially described this as deafening, what was a perfectly fine description. However, later on in the fight when thamaturgy was used again, our DM described the sounds as lude and as if someone was jacking off. This again made me uncomfortable, but I kept silent.
Another thing the DM made a quick comment about is that the barkeep gave the water genasi a glass of water instead of beer and it was the barkeep being racist. Which was a completely unnecessary thing to say.
A little later while still in the bar, it was discovered that our party's mark was also in the building, and that he was commenting about how he found my character attractive, especially since she was apparently the only women in the bar. (Which not only contradicted the DM's earlier description of "Men, women, and children crowed around watching the bar fight" but also the fact that it was the towns only tavern and we were supposed to believe there were no other women then? Not even barmaids?) It was then implied heavily by not only most of the rest of my party but also the DM that I was supposed to go over and seduce the mark and gain access to his house by doing so. I felt set up and nervous. This was by no means how I had ever intended for this character to be played (she was originally going to literally still be a minor before I had to age her up). To make matters even more uncomfortable the DM insisted on role-playing a good portion of the in bar discussion/seduction between my character and the NPC. I said that I was uncomfortable with the situation, and them tried to use the excuse that I was not good at role-playing and had never done it before, but the DM was insistent. Through out the experience other players kept commenting on different aspects or were just being overtly sexual. I ended the in bar role-play fairly swiftly before my character had to go over and tell the rest of the party where she was going, and for them to follow her and scout the house. One the the other players had his character turn invisible and come also in the house as a scout while the other party members where outside.
When my character got back to the house with the mark, his younger sister was apparently awake and waiting. She was decribed as an young girl looking around the age of 13. This immedatly set off some warning bells, because the oarty was meant to capture her and transport her somewhere, which made me worried about what the DM had in mind. In the moment nothing else came of the little girl except that she tried to shame my character for coming back with her brother.
Next, my character and the mark went to his bedroom, and the DM described the multiple tools and weapons hanging on the NPCs wall, I could have been reading into it at this point but it felt like he was describing them in hopes I would have my character use them in the coming moments. The DM again then had my try to role-play the instruction between my character and the NPC, to which I was fairly bland with my words and sped through the process again. My DM then made my character take a point of exhaustion, which gives you disadvantage on checks. I then had my character leave after the NPC had fallen asleep, to which she was met with the younger sister again, who once again tried to shame her for a sexual experience.
When the DM switched to the POV of the other party members two of the players made the comments that they were pretty sure that the invisible party member who was in the house was probably sticking around and getting a show from my character and the mark.
When our whole party met up later to compare intel from the evening my character was the only one that had nothing to add to the scout mission. She had been purely used as a distraction. She was utterly unimportant to the plot of the mission and the campaign. The only "good" that came out of it was when one of the party members asked if my character could show them what she had done to the mark I replied so quickly with an adamant NO (of frustration and annoyance) that the DM told the other player his character suffered 4 points of psychic damage. At this point I was thoroughly upset, annoyed, and bored with the session and DM. This was when one of the other party members (the one who had played the invisible scout) private messaged me and asked if I was uncomfortable. It felt like I was able to take a breath that I didn't even know I could.
The other player explained to me that he was also uncomfortable with the situation and that he was here to support me. We continued to message back and forth for the rest of the session. I honestly don't think I would have made it to the end without him.
In the middle of the night a man broke into the room my character was sharing with the party's orc fighter. But my character slept through the whole interaction between the two characters, which just made me more uncomfortable, but I at this point I was so uncomfortable with this whole campaign that it was just another layer.
When our party awoke the next morning there were comments from the party about how my character had slept so deeply because of being worn out from the night before. This just caused more annoyance from me. When out party stepped out of the tavern there was a man selling potions on a cart pulled my two humans and two drow elves. The DM stated, after the invisible scout's insight check, that the people pulling the cart were slaves and that the whole region we were in had slavery. The owner of said slaves (played by the DM) stated that they were better than horses because they fought back. This statement made me extremely uncomfortable, even more so than the sexual encounters.
At this point the invisible scout spoke up and said that our characters should free the slaves, in response my chracter was the only one that agreed so we set about to release them. This involved me casting blindness on the owner and then getting shot by his goblin lacky and taking over half of my HP in damage. Then the genasi cast sleep on the goblin (not to help us free the slaves, but to steal something off the cart), which allowed the scout and I to cut the chains and try to let the slaves free. By that point the owner had regained his sight and the slaves had not run away. One of the slaves then glared at my character and said "should I dispose of them master" and honestly I wish he had, because then I would have gotten to leave. Instead, I had to stick around because the owner insisted that I was merely misunderstanding the situation and that no further punishment should come to my character if she worked off the payment of the chains she had cut. There was no mention of the scout being punished. I wanted to cry at this point, out of frustration and annoyance.
The last few minutes of the session involved the party then splitting up to look at different locations around town that we also needed to scout, but at this point I was not paying attention to anything the DM or anybody else said.
Throughout the course of the session the DM and other players also made other unnecessarily sexual and racist comments, but there were so many that I only explained the major ones. By the end, when the DM asked how the session was, I couldn't respond. I felt assaulted. Yes, I had put myself in this situation, but there had been no prior indication before starting the evening that I would be subjected to a multitude of sexual and racist comments throughout the session.
The whole experience was horrible, except for the fact that the invisible scout player and I have continued to talk and have both decided to leave the campaign and look for a friendlier one together. I am just glad that I had him to talk to during the experience because otherwise I probably would have thought I was exaggerating things in my head. I have loved D&D for a long time and this experience has tarnished my love for the game. I just hope I can recover from it and learn to again love the game and the people who play that are truly loving, accepting, and kind.

The long awaited Saturday had finally come. Jeonghan got up early to prepare brunch, and especially for today, he set the table more prettily than the usual. Even a small bouquet was put on the table. A soothing jazzy instrumental was also playing vaguely in the background. Unfortunately, the lunch today was the most inconvenient meal they had ever since the three of them decided to become housemates. There was nothing can be heard except the quiet munching and the clinking sound of the chopsticks and spoons against their bowls.
"Because I'm being nice today, I will do all the dishes. While waiting, you two may enjoy tiramisu for dessert. I put it in the fridge. Sojung specially bought it for us," Jeonghan said as he cleared up the table.
Again, the boys were eating in silence while Jeonghan washed the dishes. Joshua and Seungcheol didn't seem to mind the high tension hanging in the air. Jeonghan sighed in frustration as he joined back to the dining table. He positioned himself in the middle, while Joshua and Seungcheol was across each other.
"Really, I don't understand you sometimes." None of his housemates responded. Rolling his eyes, he brushed his hair vigorously. "Okay, let's start our important meeting. I, Yoon Jeonghan will be your moderator today. Neither Minghao nor Wonwoo could join us for this occasion. So, I hope we can be as civil as possible. Jisoo, Seungcheol, you will only talk when I let you and you may not interrupt each other."
At this point, both Joshua and Seungcheol still kept their mouths shut. And Jeonghan was not happy. "Say yes if you understand," he barked.
A sloppy yes escaped from Joshua's lips.
"Seungcheol?"
"Yes, I understand."
"Alright. Jisoo, you can start. You may ask, or just simply tell us how you feel." He turned to Seungcheol who was fidgeting with his hands. "As I said, Seungcheol, no interrupting. And you may answer if Jisoo asks you."
Joshua inhaled deeply before he began. During this 5 year friendship, he had witnessed Seungcheol being strict even to himself when it comes to work. As friends, he would give suggestions that make sense and even critics or bitter truths when he had to. Of course, Joshua experienced fighting with him too, but that was when they were younger and it was over something that is not bigger than who can use the bathroom first.
"Seungcheol, you and Y/N.. Have you been seeing each other? Like regularly?" he began calmly, then paused for a second, gulping nervously. "Or, officially?"
Unconsciously, Seungcheol had been holding his breath since Joshua spoke. His hands were tightly holding onto his glass of water. For the first time, the strong and reliable Choi Seungcheol, the oldest in his peers, could not look at Joshua in the eyes. "Yes.." he muttered.
Instead of Joshua, Jeonghan was quicker to react and he almost shrieked Seungcheol's name as he was shocked to hear his short answer.
The oldest immediately corrected himself, "No, I mean not officially. But regularly."
Jeonghan cleared his throat. "Seungcheol, please define regularly."
"No need to, Jeonghan," said Joshua calmly. "Since when?"
"Since you were assigned for Big Hit." He tried to read Joshua's response which showed no facial expression changes. "No. Maybe even way before that."
"May I ask why?" asked Joshua again.
Flustered, Seungcheol cautiously glanced at Jeonghan and see how he reacted. Jeonghan locked his eyes to him, as if words could come out of his eyes. Seungcheol nervously bit his lower lips. It wasn't that long ago since Jeonghan and Seungcheol talked about this after that night. He can't say the same thing he said to Vernon and Jeonghan, that Joshua didn't have a chance, can he? He didnât want to be scolded again by Jeonghan, moreover in front of Joshua this time.
Seungcheol was contemplating in his head. "Uh.. Because it looks like you're not getting anywhere with her." His brain worked so hard to arrange words so that it wouldn't sound too harsh. Or else, Jeonghan would definitely get him.
Hearing his answer, Joshua couldn't even deny it. It was true after all. âYou know what? Youâre right,â he trailed off, his eyes were fixated on the leftover tiramisu. âBut what makes you think itâs okay for you to attempt going closer to her?â
Seungcheol remained silent.
"Look, I know you like her too. Then I have my right to be upset to see you with her, right? I've always been jealous that you're much closer with her. But now that I'm thinking about it, I guess itâs partially my fault too. I'm mad at myself. If only I can make myself more trustworthy for her. It's been months and she can't even make herself comfortable around me. And I still donât know why."
Knowing the reason, Seungcheol was reluctant to tell him that he knew something. But being glared at by Jeonghan made him shudder. âI think you should ask her yourself,â he said slowly. âIâll give you a hint; itâs your image.â
âMy image? What do you mean?â In his head, the amount of nicknames he heard from campus were coming back and forth. Gentleman, Mr. Nice Guy, angelic smile, angel voice, Bambi eyes, and many more. And he didnât even know why people gave him these labels.
âThatâs not my story to tell,â Seungcheol stated firmly.
At this answer, Jeonghan nodded understandingly although he was also curious what could be your reason that Seungcheol knew.
âBut... thatâs also if she wants to tell you, or if she wants to see you,â Seungcheol continued, making Jeonghan widened his eyes in disbelief. What again this time? Jeonghan cursed internally.
Apparently Joshua was triggered as well. âWhy wouldnât she want to see me? We go to the same uni, same classes, and now same office,â he retorted in confusion. âI literally see her everyday in the office.â
âYeah, but with the rumor about you and that colleague of yours? Whatâs her name again, Siyoung?â
This time Joshuaâs bambi eyes got wider as he furrowed his brows. âYou mean Siyeon? Wait, how do you know Siyeon?â
âWhoâs Siyeon? Shua, are you seeing someone and you didnât tell me?â Jeonghan asked, a bit accusing his best buddy.
âNo!â Joshua snapped. âSheâs just a co-worker. There is nothing going onâ wait, did you just say rumor? What rumor, and why do I not know about it?â
For the first time, Seungcheol raised his head and found Joshuaâs eyes. âWhy do you think Y/N was so upset when you didnât make it to the sushi bar?â
Joshua went silent as he tried to recall that day. He did went out with his team members, including this Siyeon girl. He had to go to Siyeonâs house because some files were accidentally carried out when she went home that particular week. The day after that he also worked very closely with her because she was new. And apparently, many things following that day that were related to Siyeon.
So thatâs why Aronâs friend mentioned about Y/N saying I should continue to be partnered with Siyeon throughout this whole project. So thatâs why she thought I was supposed to work with Siyeon.. Silently, Joshua face-palmed himself as he grunted.
âHey, you okay? Is there something you want to tell us?â Jeonghan nudged him.
Sighing heavily, Joshua brushed his fringe backwards. âNo. Iâll just find a way to talk to her.â
Jeonghan nodded. âSeungcheol?â
"Jisoo, I owe you an apology. Not because I like her. It's because I shouldn't have done it behind your back. If we have to be rivals, everything should be fair and square."
Joshua was honestly not surprised by his answer. "You're not going to back off, huh?"
"I was. But I donât think I can stop myself," Seungcheol said in hesitation. But he meant every word he said.
âChoi Seungcheol!â Jeonghan raised his voice again at the oldest, even louder this time. "What are you thinking?!â
âHey, calm down,â said Joshua, his hand reached to Jeonghanâs arm and squeezed it lightly. Both of them knew that Seungcheol was a man with strong willing. But when it comes to feelings, romantic relationship and friends, Jeonghan just wished he would prioritize friends. Moreover this time, it involved Joshua in a so-called love triangle in which Joshua was at disadvantaged position.
âOkay, I will back off,â Seungcheol slowly uttered, looking deep into Joshuaâs eyes. âThe day when she chooses you over me and anybody else, I will back off.â

âNiko, Niko, Niko, NIKO!â Morgan half-sang, half shouted, punctuating each repetition of my name with a bounce on the bed. âNiko! NIKO!â
I sighed groggily, cracking open an eye and looking over at her. She reached across the bed, placing both hands on my shoulder and giving me a solid shake.
âNiko! The sunâs finally up!â She declared, then crawled closer to better shake me. âItâs morning! I slept! Can I go explore the castle now?â I started to yawn, and she bounced up and down impatiently. âCome ON, Niko! Get up!! Get up!â
âAlright, alright, little chickadee. Iâm up.â I yawned again. âIâm up.â
I rubbed a hand across my face, slowly tugging myself into a sitting position. My whole body felt heavy and drained, as if I had spent the previous day climbing a mountain. It took me longer than usual to shake the grogginess from my head, and I lingered with my fingers pinching the bridge of my nose. The sunâs rays were slowly filtering in through the large windows beside the bed. Reaching sparkling tendrils of light towards us. Seeing that I was officially awake, Morgana bounded from the bed and skittered barefoot across the floor over to the clear glass. I swore she was almost vibrating with excitement, and pressed her face against it to peer out.
âCan we go outside? Are goblins awake during the day, or are they only up at night? Are there a lot of goblins?â She gushed, dancing from foot to foot before running back to the bed.
I ran my hand over the back of my head, then down to my neck, stretching my sore muscles, nodding slowly. âWe can go outside, Iâm sure. Goblins sleep at night too. And yes, thereâs a lot of them.â
She tugged at my wrist as I swung my legs out of the bed, and I stood at her insistence. âWhat do you do all day? Do you run the city? Do you hold audiences?â
âI train with the General in the mornings.â I told her, stretching again now that I was standing. âAnd the King has been letting me shadow him, so I can learn more about the Kingdom. And Iâve been learning goblinese.â I tugged a fresh tunic over my head.
âGoblinese??â
I nodded, noticing a trunk in the foyer and guessing that some of the attendants must have brought it in last night while we were distracted. I padded my way over and started picking through her clothes before tossing her a fresh dress.
âThatâs what goblins speak. Not all of them know Common.â
âCan I learn goblinese?â She asked eagerly.
I shrugged. âI donât see why not. Wash up and get dressed.â
There was a knock as I directed her to the bathing room. I closed the door behind her, leaving it propped a tiny crack, before I headed back to the foyer to the one leading out to the hall. My heart skipped as a memory of soft green lips came unbidden to my mind. I quickly reminded myself that Grier would never be up this early, unless he had simply never gone to bed the day before. And cool beads of dread dripped down the back of my neck as I remembered what he had saidâŚ. âBut I would like to speak more about⌠âŚ. About everything.â Everything. What was... everything? I swallowed hard, brushing the notion from my head as best I could.
Still, my hand shook a little as I tugged the door open. I wasnât sure if I was relieved or disappointed that Seoc stood in the hall instead. He offered me a quick bow.
âGood morning, Your Highness.â
âGood morning, Seoc,â I replied cordially, nodding to him and hiding my nervousness well, âI hope everything is alright?â
He smiled up at me. âOf course, Your Highness. My apologies for the intrusion.â He dipped his head lightly again. âGeneral Damjan sent word. He is curious if you will still be joining him his morning.â
I considered that, glancing over as the door to the bathing room opened. Morgana scuttled over, freshly dressed and eyes curious, quickly tucking herself at my side and peeking around the door. Seocâs own eyes dropped to her, and he gave a friendly smile, bowing lightly.
âPrincess.â He greeted her cheerily.
She looked between me and him, then tugged on my shirt subtly. I supposed she might be surprised. Wondering who Seoc was to be speaking to her without having first been spoken to. Not that she minded, I knew. Likely she was estatic. She just didnât know how to react to it. I was again reminded how different customs were between the two kingdoms. I instinctually dropped a hand to her shoulder, reassuring her as she shifted from foot to foot.
âI assume the King is not up yet?â I asked him, trying to sound as matter-of-fact as possible.
He hid a small smirk, as if amused by the thought of the King being up at any decent morning hour. âNot yet, Your Highness.â He cocked his head to the side and his big ears flopped. I saw Morganaâs eyes widen with delight. âWould you like me to have breakfast brought up for you?â
âWhat do you think then, Princess?â I mused, giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze. âWould you like to go to the training grounds with me? Or are you hungry?â
She looked between me and Seoc again for another quiet moment, her eyes still wide with wonder. â... I could go with you?â She asked timidly, her voice softer than usual, âDo you fight with the goblins?â
âOf course, you can. And we spar; only for training and exercise purposes.â I assured her. Then nodded to Seoc. âPerhaps the General would be willing to show the Princess and I around the grounds? In lieu of our usual match.â
âI can send word, Your Highness, if you would give me a moment.â He replied. âThen I can escort you down if you wish.â The goblin tilted his head to the side. âI am certain the King would enjoy sharing breakfast with you as well. Shall I let Lord Hibik know to inform us when he wakes?â
I stiffened a little, then gave a curt nod. âThat is an excellent suggestion, Seoc... Let me fetch my boots while you send word, yes?â
âAs you wish, Your Highness.â
A few minutes later we were off to meet Damjan. Morgana shyly hid in my shadow, tugging on my sleeve and whispering things to me. Despite that, and the innate joy I felt just to have her at my side, I couldnât help but linger on what came later on after our tourâŚ

Seoc bowed as he opened the door for us, stepping to the side to allow us to enter. Morgana kept a step behind me, alternating between peeking around my legs and hiding herself there. I knew it must be strange for her; she had been taught to stifle her curiosity and told to sit still for as long as she could remember, save with me. Surrounded by statues, and not allowed to ask questions or speak. Ignored, for the most part, as most children at Court were. But here, everyone smiled at her. Everyone greeted her, and when she forgot herself for a moment and asked a question, they were always eager to answer. She had never perfected her composure and mask as I had; but I still saw her struggle a little, as she tried to determine what was expected of her. It made my heart ache to see, and I was glad to have taken her as far away from that place as I could.
The small sitting room we entered was well lit, with a small crackling fire before the couch and armchairs sat before the knee-high dark wood table. I saw Morganaâs eyes skitter about, considering the cluttered dĂŠcor and bright colors. My eyes settled much more quickly on the roomâs occupants.
Grier sat on one end of the couch, shuffling grumpily through a few papers Hibik offered him. Perhaps it was my imagination, but I felt that he looked a fair bit more tired than usual, with dark circles around his eyes. At the sound of the door, his gaze flicked up. Meeting mine. My heart skipped and I resisted the urge swallow. Especially as those thin lips split into a small, wry smile.
âAh, my favorite pair of royal siblings.â He exclaimed, glancing back at the papers once more before passing them to Hibik with a nod. âI trust you slept well?â
Morgana peeked around my leg curiously, and he offered her a smile. As he seemed to be speaking directly to her, she bowed her head lightly. âGood morning, Your Majesty. Thank you for your inquiry.â She replied formally.
Grier cocked one brow, standing slowly and waving Hibik out the door. âMy, but the family resemblance is strong.â He replied dourly, tilting his head to the side. âThereâs no need for that, Princess. You may always speak freely around me.â
Morgana glanced up at me, surprised and a little curious. I pushed her hair back out of her face, the corners of my mouth twitching. But I gave her a small nod, and she looked back at the King.
â... I can still call you âGrierâ?â She asked shyly.
His smile returned. âOf course! I hope I can still call you âMorganaâ, yes? And you can still ask me questions.â He beckoned us both deeper into the room. âPerhaps you can even help me convince Nikostratus to do so as well.â He told her with a wink.
A tiny smile lit her own lips as a flush prickled my cheeks at his words, and she glanced at me only once more before walking around to sit in one of the armchairs beside the table. I followed behind, pretending not to notice the goblinâs eyes following me as I did. I settled on the couch, and tried not to stiffen as he settled back in the seat at the opposite end. The couch was not nearly so long; his knees could almost brush mine when he turned to the side, as he did now. He reached out, flipping a cup and pouring some coffee into it. I peeked at him through my lashes as he offered it to me. Forcing myself not to quiver as our fingers brushed together when I took it from him.
âPlease, help yourselves.â He told us, though his eyes never left mine. âI am sure you are hungry.â
âThank you.â I replied softly, my voice barely above a murmur. I ran my thumb along the edge of my drink, but then raised it to take a slow sip. I wondered what he was thinking. I tried to look at him from the corners of my eyes, wondering if he would want to talk immediately. Or if I would have to suffer the dread of waiting even longer. It had been all I could think about for the previous few hours. I couldnât fathom having whatever pending conversation he had planned in front of my sister, but couldnât tell if he would take her presence in to consideration either.
âThere are no forks!â Morgana exclaimed after a moment, bringing me back to the present. I turned to find her looking over the spread, and saw her glance up nervously.
âNo, I suppose there are not.â Grier replied, amused, leaning back with his own cup.
She tilted her head to the side, slowly coming out of her shell again. â... How do you eat?â
The goblin smirked, taking a sip. âWith our hands.â He tilted his head back to the side. âDo humans eat with their feet?âÂ
Her smile grew a little at his teasing. âNo. But, we donât touch food.â She looked over at me. â...Weâre not supposed to touch the food. It gets our hands messy.â
The King âhmmâed softly at that. âGoblin food is meant to be eaten with your hands.â Grier told her. âI suppose it must not be as messy as yours.âÂ
She looked back over the spread. Then back to me.
âGo ahead.â I encouraged her. âTry some. I think youâll like it.â
She gingerly picked up a pastry, bringing it to her mouth to sniff. After the first bite, she was hooked, and I almost smiled as she quickly scarfed down the rest and went for another. She cast another nervous glance at both of us, but whenever neither of us looked particularly upset at her manners, she took another handful. I saw her little shoulders relax a little. The goblin picked up a morsel for himself, taking a solid bite and chewing thoughtfully for a moment.
âWould you like some tea?â He offered her, gesturing to the pot. âHow did you find the castle this morning? I hope you got the chance to explore a little.â
âNo, thank you.â She said politely, swallowing another mouthful. âWe saw the training cliffs.â She glanced at him through her lashes, and he gave her an encouraging nod. Her smile started to spread wider across her lips. âYou can see the mountains from there! Itâs very cold... Is it always cold here? Do goblins get cold? Do you wear fur hats?â
Grier chewed thoughtfully. âI suppose it usually is quite cold, but inside the mountain we keep it nice and toasty so we donât notice. And of course we get cold! We arenât dragons.â He grinned at her. âAnd I have a few fur hats.â
She giggled, plucking up a new item to try, sniffing at it experimentally. Her hazel eyes flicked to me as she did.
âYou need to eat too, Niko.â She reminded me, before looking over at Grier. âNiko doesnât eat much.â She explained to him. âI think he forgets heâs hungry. Itâs not good for him though! Heâll make himself sick.â
I blushed slightly, starting to open my mouth to reply. To my surprise, Grier chuckled.Â
âIâve noticed that.â His scarlet eyes flicked to me at their corners. âHe wonât eat if heâs nervous⌠or flustered.â I felt my blush deepen as the goblin leaned forward, calling my sisterâs attention to a tray of pastries in the center. âDo you see these? We call these uyapik. Thereâs different types for every meal. But each bite is like a whole plate of food in one.â He picked one up, holding it out to her. âIt has vegetables, and meat, and often cheese. All in one neat little package.â
Her eyes filled with wonder as she took it from him. She took a bite, then nodded excitedly. âOh, this is perfect! Itâs so yummy!â
Grier grinned. âEven Nikostratus can usually manage to eat one or two of these. A single uyapi should have just about everything he needs.â My eyes widened slightly with the sudden realization of why the goblin pastry had become such a prominent feature through the duration of my stay. The Kingâs grin turned a little coy at the corners.
âHere, Niko,â She exclaimed, popping out of her seat and grabbing one in each hand, âThese are yours.â
I fumbled with my cup to make space for them in my own hands before they fell on my lap. âChickadee, I-â
âDo you always eat with him?â She asked Grier, ignoring me. âDo you goblins have lunch and dinner too?â She drew in a sharp breath, suddenly looking a little concerned. âDo you have desert??â
Grier nodded. âI try to eat with him for every meal. And yes, we have a midday meal and an evening meal.â His grin grew. âAnd of course we have desert. Nothing more important than that!â
Morgana giggled, leaning against my knees behind her and looking over the table again. She picked up something that looked like a hardboiled egg, though it was freckled with green spots. She seemed to think about that for a moment. â... Do goblins have weddings, too? When are you going to get married?â
I started to sputter something, and Grier chuckled again. âOur ceremonies are different than yours, but we do have âweddingsâ, so to speak.â His scarlet eyes flicked to me, and I nearly froze in place. âAnd I hope soon, though we still have to plan it.â
âCan I help? Will Niko be a King afterwards? Do goblins share rooms when they are married?â She tilted her head to the side. âWill you move in with him, or will he move in with you? Is your bed big enough? Niko is very tall.â
âN-now, hold on a second, chickadee,â I started, my face hotter than a furnace, âYou canât just-â
âNiko doesnât like talking about this stuff.â She told Grier, ignoring me, leaving me sputtering and flushing darker. âThis one time, I asked him about kissing, and he-â
I clapped my free hand over her mouth, shaking my head fervently as I felt my ears catch fire from embarrassment. âI-I think that thatâs quite e-enough of that.â I mumbled, reaching out to place the remaining uyapi on the table and wrap my arm about her waist to hoist her to the side. As if hiding her from his view would assure the goblin forgot her words.
Grier laughed, which only served to make my flush spread down the back of my neck. âWell, I do believe sheâs asked some very good questions, my young Prince.â He teased. âVery practical, your little bird is.â
I dropped my hand with a soft shout of disgust as she licked her tongue across my palm. Before I could catch her again, she darted around the other side of the table. Giggling excitedly. I wiped my hand on my pant leg and shot her a small scowl. Which only had the goblin laughing again. I stiffened at the sound.
âI-I apologize,â I started to stammer, working hard to find some semblance of my composure once more.
The King waved it away. âNo apologies necessary.â He grinned at me. âI like seeing you like this.â
âLike what?â Asked Morgana curiously, darting a little closer to his side of the table.
His grin grew. âMore relaxed. And of course, flustered.â I dropped my eyes to the floor quickly, unable to meet his. âI think it makes him look very cute.â
Morgana giggled again, sneaking around the other side of the couch. She had to practically jump over the back, but managed to wrap her arms around my shoulders with her feet dangling off the ground. I glanced at her out of the corner of my eye suspiciously.
âNiko! He thinks youâre cute!â She whispered conspiratorially in my ear. âYou should say something nice back!â
I would have stood and attempted some excuse to bolt from the room had my sister not been currently so precariously wrapped about me. I stammered uselessly for a minute, which just made Grier laugh again and my ears burn. Could he hear her?
âCome on, Niko!â She urged. â... I know! Tell him you like his hair.â
âN-now, se-see here, you two.â I mumbled weakly, shaking my head. âTh-this⌠this is⌠AhâŚâ
âPerhaps we should let your brother be for a minute, yes?â Grier offered, his smirk still coyly twisted about his lips. âElsewise he might just catch the couch on fire. Or forget how to breathe.â I felt Morganaâs arms loosen at his words, and wrung my hands nervously in front of me. â... Would you like to meet your potential Lady in Waiting now?â Grier continued, easily changing the subject. âI have a few noble ladies come to call to meet you.â
âGoblin ladies?â Morgana asked eagerly, slipping back around to the front of the couch. Her previous motives already forgotten in light of this new information.
The King chuckled. âYes, of course. As I do believe the current population of humans in our Court is limited to this room at the moment.â He shifted in his seat. âYou can meet them all, and if you like any of them, they can be your Lady.â
My sister picked up a uyapi, quickly finishing it off in two bites before picking up another pastry and stuffing that into her still chewing mouth as well. She turned back to me as she swallowed it.
âSee, Niko? I ate! Can we go meet the goblins now?â
I tried to relax, swallowing hard and attempting to wrangle my swirling thoughts into some semblance of order.Â
âActually, Morgana,â Grier interrupted before I could voice whatever I had managed to compile, âPerhaps Hibik can take you to meet the young ladies.â I stiffened again, looking over at him. âThey are just down the hall, and Iâm not sure Nikostratus has eaten very much himself yet.â He cocked his head to the side. âWould that be alright?â
She nodded eagerly. âOh, yeah. Youâre right.â She turned back to me, pointing one scolding finger at my nose. My eyebrows shot up a little. âYou need to eat. And youâd better have before I get back.â She warned.
âI beg your pardon-â
To my surprise, she then skipped in between us, picking up my hand and Grierâs. And pressed them together until they folded over each other. My mouth flapped uselessly as my face blazed.
âThere.â She proclaimed, putting her hands on her hips and looking out our now entwined fingers. âThatâs better.â She turned to Grier who looked a little surprised himself. âMake sure he eats, ok?â
As if on cue, Hibik opened the door with a knock, arms full of paperwork and a greeting on his lips. Morgana skipped around the couch to him.
âLord Hibik, Grier says youâre to take me to see the goblin ladies,â She told him, and then started to dart out the door around him. âLetâs go!â
âMorgana-â I began exasperatedly, moving to stand, then froze as the Kingâs fingers suddenly tightened around mine.
âHibik, if you would be so kind.â Grier instructed him, waving his free hand lightly.
His secretary looked between us, wide eyed, then quickly scrambled to close the door and follow after my sister. A few papers fluttered to the ground in his wake, forgotten in his haste.
My heart thudded in my chest and I stared numbly at the door for a long moment. Torn between Morgana no longer being in my sight and the heat slowly spreading down my neck as Grier kept our fingers firmly and stubbornly latched together. After a moment, I chanced a glance at our hands on the couch between us where she had left them.
âYou know,â He finally said after an extended moment of silence, âI was originally under the impression that you were the primary caretaker for Morgana.â I straightened slightly at his words, and I could hear the grin lacing his next. âBut now, Iâm not entirely so sure itâs not the other way around.â
âAh⌠SheâsâŚâ I mumbled, face still flaming. âShe can be a bit⌠pushy.â
He chortled lightly. âShe cares a lot about you. And I think she does an excellent job watching out for you. For a nine year old.â His voice became a little more somber suddenly. â... We spoke about you for a time, yesterday. Before you happened upon us.â I noticed him shift a little closer, and my legs tingled to stand. â... Iâm afraid she might have told me a few secrets of yours after all.â
I swallowed hard, shifting in my seat. Trying to pretend I didnât have any idea what he was talking about and still unable to meet his gaze. âO-oh?â
His thumb moved across my knuckles. âShe gave me a little glimpse into your life before⌠all thisâŚâ The goblin slid even closer, and his other hand came up to cap ours. â... I didnât get the impression it was a particularly happy life.â
âItâs unfortunate that she gave you that impression,â I replied after a breath, shrouding myself in a flat formality that was belittled by my unwillingness to meet his eyes, âHowever, I can assure you thatâŚâ I dropped off, â... That⌠ummâŚâ I felt a strange numbness tingling through me, and realized I hadnât the will to fabricate that particular lie. Especially to Grier. I glanced off to the side. â... It had its moments.â
âMost of them focused around your little bird, I would assume.â
I slipped my hand from his grasp, bringing it to clasp my other in my lap. I stared down at them for a moment. â... I-I⌠I am sure it is unimportant.â
â.... I was about Morganaâs age when my father died.â He told me quietly. âOne day he was there and the nextâŚâ I peeked at him through my lashes, and saw him looking off at some distant spot. â... My mother ruled in his stead, and she made sure I had the freedom to⌠well, to be a child. To go on little adventures, and play, and have fun. She let me make friends with whomever I wanted... She didnât hold me to adult standards of self control and etiquette. I didnât have to make tough decisions that impacted the entire Kingdom, or be faced with those responsibilities. I didnât even really know about them. She didnât ask me to be a King or even a royal while I was still a kidâŚâ
I looked at him, and my brow furrowed angrily. âI do not hold Morgana to adult standards.â I argued, my voice becoming terse. âI do not demand she sit still or quiet, nor do I lay any royal responsibilities on her shoulders-â
âI know.â He interrupted me before I could get too heated.Â
As he dropped off, I tried to wrap my head around why then he had told me about his own childhood. What point he had been trying to make... And suddenly I knew it wasnât Morgana he was talking about. A cold chill swept through me at the realization. I blinked at him stupidly, then shook my head. Looking away once more. A tense silence stretched between us for a long moment. Finally, I cleared my throat, shaking my head. Moving to speak. But nothing came out.
âI donât mean to pry. It was just something I realized while I was speaking with your sister.â He continued, when I still hadnât spoken. Then he sighed, and I saw his hand come up, pushing his hair back out of his face. âIâm⌠not sure if you would want to talk about it⌠but Iâm here if you do.â
I chewed on my tongue for a moment, glancing over at the door. â... Talk about what, exactly?â I asked, and winced at the bitterness in my voice. âTalk about the King? Talk about... âall this seriousnessâ?â I felt a numbness spreading through my chest, and my eyes became unseeing. â...Talk about my mother? ⌠What good would it do? Talking?â I sounded distant, even to my own ears, and painfully flat. âWhat does it change?â I shook my head once more, the sensation deadened by the numbness. â... I-I donât⌠I donât want to talk about it.â
He nodded quickly. âOkâŚ. Thatâs fine. I understand.â The goblin patted my knee gently. âIt was callous of me to bring up⌠I apologize.â
Grier moved to stand, starting to withdraw his hand. I grabbed it suddenly, then winced. Releasing it almost as soon as I had, embarrassed. But he froze for a breath, before dropping back down. Sitting beside me once more. Slowly, he reached out, slipping his hand into mine. I didnât move as he did, and stared at his fingers as he wiggled them between my own. Watched them curl around mine in my lap, felt his warmth seep into my palm. I hesitated, then slowly closed my own fingers.
â... I donât want to talk about it... butâŚâ I told him, my voice weak, and frayed. I hated the sound of it, and closed my mouth to trap it once more. I glanced down at our hands, and felt mine twitch in his grasp.
âI can stay.â He murmured softly, and his thumb ran back and forth over my own. âWe can talk about something elseâŚâ The goblin hesitated, and I glanced at him. â... Morgana also said you went away for a while, but she didnât know where. Only that you were⌠different when you came back.â
Instantly I stiffened. Remembering exactly what she had said regarding that time. My heart throbbed painfully in my chest. I started to pull my hand from his. Then⌠I stopped myself. Hesitating. Glancing back at our entwined fingers. My tongue felt too large for my mouth again. I felt him give my hand another gentle squeeze. I tried to take courage from it.
â... I went to the front lines.â I said, so quietly he had to lean forward to hear me.
He seemed to sense I didnât particularly want to talk about that either. And thankfully let it be. Instead, we sat in silence for a moment, and he brought his free hand to trace small circles on the inside of my wrist. I slowly calmed my racing heart, and felt my breath become more steady.
â... Morgana will need a tutor.â I told him finally, my voice still quiet. Straying back into safer waters. âI-I am not sure how long she will be able to stay with us, but-â
âItâs not a problem.â He assured me, stroking my hand gently. âShe can stay as long as she likes.â He chuckled lightly. âWhich I hope is for a very long time... What did your brother mean though? âWhen itâs safeâ?â He frowned. âSafe from what?â
I scowled, my heart rate jumping again. â... The King, in his wisdom, spoke of his plans toâŚâ A bitter taste settled on my tongue, and I shook my head angrily. â... Valerianus and I feared for her welfare.â
Grier mirrored my scowl, and made a soft, disgusted noise. âAre you sure you wouldnât like me to forcibly remove him from the throne?â He asked bitterly. âI would be only too happy to do so.â I shook my head distractedly, then stopped, a sinking feeling filling my throat. I glanced sidelong at the goblin, and he caught the look. â... What is it?â
âIfâŚâ I hesitated, stopping myself and staring down at our hands. A sudden fear filled me, a dread for the answer that I felt was forthcoming. It was the question I had been avoiding for almost the entire duration of my stay. My eyes darted to the door, as if we might be interrupted at any moment. âI-if I had notâŚâ I took a steadying breath. âIf I had not agreed to thisâŚâ I stopped again, my palms feeling clammy. I started to pull my hand out of his.
To my surprise, he latched on tightly to it. âI would never have accepted Morgana in your place.â He told me bluntly, and I winced at his words. The goblin, of course, had seen right through me. âI canât even think of a child as...â His voice sounded disgusted even as he dropped off. Red eyes reached between us, and I met them nervously. âI wanted you. Iâve always wanted you.â
My heart lodged in my throat. âBut you couldnât have known I would-â I started to argue.
âI hoped.â He returned, cutting me off. â... And you forgetâŚâ I saw his slender eyebrows twitch. âI was winning the war⌠I didnât need this peace.â
My eyes must have flashed with my anger, because I saw his expression quickly recoil from his teasing. â...And had I not agreed to marry you, you would have done... what exactly?â I asked tersely. âFinished the war? Destroyed our Kingdom?â I tried to pull my hand from his. âWould you have had my family and I beheaded or just banished?â My tone was mocking and sharp. â... Or would you have imprisoned me instead?â
âNo! No, of course not!â He grabbed at my wrist as I wriggled my fingers free of his. âI just meant I wasnât forced to take a partner. I could have waited.â
âSo you forced my hand instead.â My voice was becoming colder by the minute. âWe needed the peace. Our people were dying. Were suffering.â I used my opposite hand to tear his off my wrist. âThis was all a game to you⌠Itâs always just...â My voice broke a little, but I quickly scowled to conceal it. âYou might have been able to wait. I did not have that luxury.â
I wasnât sure why I bit so hard back at him. Maybe because he had picked at a scab I had tried to keep hidden away. Maybe because I felt vulnerable, with him prying at my childhood, and longed to find some sort of foothold. And found a strange strength and familiarity in the anger. But when I glanced up at his face, and saw the pain there⌠I winced. Suddenly feeling uncertain, and more vulnerable than before. I shook my head, giving into my urge to flee the turmoil raging inside me and standing quickly. I only took a few steps away though, and stood with my back to him. Facing the fireplace.
âI didnât mean to⌠to force you into thisâŚâ He finally managed after a few tense breaths. âI tried to give you opportunities to change your mind⌠to choose a different path... to⌠to wait, as I could have...â The Kingâs voice was melancholy and soft, and I focused on the flickering flames in an attempt to block it from my heart. âBut it seems⌠as per usual⌠I didnât quite think things through. I didnât fully realize how much you needed the Treaty. How willing you were to sacrifice yourself for the sake of your peopleâŚâ
I heard the soft creak of the cushions as he stood, and stiffened slightly. My neck itched to turn and look. To see what he was doing. To know what shape his thin lips took then, or what shade of red his eyes were. Would they be dark with his regret? Or would they flash with his pain? His slender knit eyebrows, would he have them scrunched up towards the top of his nose? Crushing together his heavy brow, piling each on top of the other; the way they did when he was mad. Or would his face be soft, with his brows almost drooping off the sides of his face, making his eyes big? Was his chin tilted up to look for my face, making his hair fall down his back? Or would he be staring at the floor, unable to find the courage to meet my gaze, and have the messy locks framing his sharp jaw and prickling his long ears? It bothered me more than I cared to admit that I didnât know, and was left with only the memory of his face in my mindâs eye. Yet my pride, and my fear, would not allow me to turn to him. Even though having nothing but the hollow shadow of his face set a deep ache in my chest.

As Royals, I suppose our method is rather backwardsâŚâ He finally sought to fill the silence, and his voice placed him somewhere at my back, still close to the couch. âWe marry first, and have our courtship after⌠We have to just hope the person we picked is a good match...â I heard him shuffle a step closer. â... Iâm sorry, I donât mean to sound like Iâm making excuses⌠But I didnât need to wait⌠I didnât want to wait⌠because⌠because...â
I jumped as his hands suddenly came around my waist, then slid to my front until his arms were wrapped as far around me as they could go. I felt him bury his face into my back, and wasnât sure whether to stiffen at his touch or shiver. I froze, halfway through a breath. Confused by his proximity, and the heat of him bleeding through the fabric of my clothes.
âI saw you, Nikostratus, and I knew I wanted you⌠Knew I needed you⌠From the very first moment I laid eyes on you⌠I was lost.â His voice was muffled, but each word still stabbed at my heart. âI-I guess⌠I guess I just hoped that you would feel the same.â I felt him shake his head. âBut you donât need to. I know Iâm⌠I know that maybe I move too fast for you⌠I beg that you can forgive me⌠because when it comes to you, at the very least, I am⌠weak...â
I let out a shaky breath, and my hand moved of its own accord to lightly brush against his arms around my waist. My mind spun, and again I had a hard time finding my voice. I was glad he couldnât see my mouth flap like a fish.

He shook his head against me a second time. âItâs ok. Iâve already forced you into enough. You donât have to say or do anything-â
âCan I just-â I snapped, then sucked in a tight breath, stilling myself. Trying to calm the soft lingering smolder of my anger. Trying to pull something more cohesive from the swirl of emotions in my chest. â... The past is the past... and we canât go back and change it now.â I hesitated, then rested my hand on his arm. â... Maybe we should leave it there.â
Before he could respond, there was a loud clattering crash from beyond the door, and a few girlish shrieks. I heaved a hefty sigh, reaching up and pinching at the bridge of my nose. The Kingâs arms loosened a bit, as I sensed him turning towards the hall.
âIâve left her alone too long.â I mumbled. â... I should go see what trouble sheâs gotten up to now.â
As I slowly turned, he released me, keeping his eyes low. I could see him clearly now... His face was in the shape of pain; his brow knitted, his mouth small and downturned. I couldnât see his eyes, and his wild hair fell in a frame around his face. My heart throbbed against my ribcage. I watched him nod slowly, and swallowed hard at the sight.
â... We canâŚâ I hesitated again. â... We can talk more⌠later. Yes?â
He glanced up at me through his lashes. âIâd like that.â
I didnât bother with a further farewell. Instead turning and breezing out the door. Following the sounds of growing chaos to locate Morgana.

The trouble with the goblin noble ladies had been more or less quickly sorted. It simply appeared to have been a small misunderstanding regarding an over extended elbow and a supposedly priceless vase. Apparently the ladies had not expected such a rambunctious human princess. But they had all seemed rather nice. Most were only a few years younger than myself, though none came past my waist. They giggled and ogled at me from behind fans, shy and formal with fluttering, oversized lashes (the latest goblin trend, I learned). However, they gushed over Morgana, and seemed to truly enjoy her spirit. After we wished them a farewell and Hibik had escorted them out, she asked me if she could have all of them be her Lady.
I didnât have the strength to return to the room Grier might still be, so we explored the halls while she debated the qualities of each. Trying unsuccessfully to pick one from the gaggle. I let her speak, following her about with a torch in one hand. I didnât mind. It was nice to hear her voice, and see her so excited.
So I ambled along the hall quietly, my eyes downcast as my sister sprinted around me to explore every nook and cranny as we walked. Of which there were a lot. My face was set into its usual mask of âseriousnessâ. But internally, my mind was buzzing like a thousand angry insects. At first I tried to orchestrate my thoughts; to corral them into one pattern. Soon the effort started to give me a headache, so I allowed my mind to do as it would. Barely comprehending each thought or emotion before it ricocheted off the side of my skull and another took its place.
Grier, of course, was at the forefront of my thoughts. What he had said about not needing this Treaty⌠but instead needing me? Gods, I just couldnât understand his thinking. It had only been a few weeks, and the goblin was obsessed with me. I wondered if thatâs how it was with goblins. Once they decided on a partner, they fixated on them. Unable to think of anyone or anything else. And he had decided on me the minute he saw me walk into the throne room. No thought, no debate. No getting to know me, or wondering if he should or shouldnât. A part of me envied his quick and confident decision. I couldnât think of a time I hadnât agonized over a choice, even tiny ones. Another part of me, a smaller, quieter part⌠understood it. Not in the same way, albeit. The first time I had met Grier, I had been on edge. Almost terrified of him and what he represented for my people and my future. But nowâŚ
He had always been gentle with me, if a little callous at times. He had always sought to understand me, and make me as comfortable as he was able. He had fawned over me, and constantly went out of his way to speak his mind and heart to me. Which⌠I supposed⌠was part of the problem. I had never had anyone be so⌠And to be faced so boldly with such powerful emotions... ones that I had never been allowed to express or understand⌠it was unnerving. Though I found the more he did it⌠the less it shocked me. And I couldnât entirely deny how much I found I enjoyed his company myself. Nor could I ignore the pleasantness of the warm feeling he elicited in my chest...
âHey, Niko?â
I came back to the present with a few slow blinks, and turned to consider my sister as she ducked beneath my elbow. âYes, little chickadee?â
âYou ok?â Her little hands came up to wrap around my arm, and she gave it a gentle tug. âYou seem⌠not here.â
My cheeks tinted a shade darker, and I cleared my throat lightly. âAh, sorry, chickadee⌠I was just⌠thinking.â
âI like it here.â She told me, beaming. âIt's big, and pretty, and everyone smiles a lotâŚâ She skipped over to the nearest bobble, making funny faces in its reflective surface. âAnd itâs so colorful!â She looked over her shoulder at me. â... Do you like it here, Niko?â
I sighed quietly, glancing around. Considering it for a moment. â... I think Iâm starting to.â
âItâs kind of messy for your tastes, isnât it?â Morgana smiled, darting back over to scoop up my hand and pull me further down the hall. âWhat about the goblins? Do you like them?â She dropped my hand to run over to another strange item, poking it carefully with one finger. âI think they are nice. And I like their ears.â
I smiled a little at that, glancing around. âThey are a very kind people.â I agreed.
âGrier doesnât really look much like a goblin.â She mused aloud, and my spine stiffened at his name. As if maybe she had been reading my thoughts earlier. âHeâs taller than me. And his ears are smaller than other goblinsâ.â She shrugged, turning and leading the way to another intersection. âHe is green though, and he dresses funny. I think thatâs enough.â
âChickadee, you shouldnât-â
âWhatâs it like to be married, Niko?â She asked curiously, looking back over her shoulder at me.
I stammered uselessly for a second. âI-Iâm afraid I donât have an answer for that...â
She scoffed. âNot yet, anyway.â She turned her attention to the left, and skipped to the edges of the torchlight before waiting for me to catch up. âBut I think youâll like it.â
âIâll let you know.â I replied dryly, and she giggled.
âThis way.â She told me, pointing down another hallway. I followed along behind her obediently. âDo you think Iâll get married someday?â
My lips pursed, and I shook my head. âAbsolutely not. I forbid it.â
âNiiikoo!â
âNope. Iâm sorry. Youâre not allowed to grow up.â I told her as she charged at me to plow face first into my torso. âAnd only grownups get married. Ergo, you are never getting married.â
She laughed, wrapping her arms about my middle. âBut I am growing up, Niko!â
âI have already forbidden it. So you cannot grow anymore.â I patted her head. âI hope you like being this tall.â
Morgana swatted my hand away, then shoved at me playfully. âYou canât keep me from growing up! Youâre just a brother! Brothers canât do that.â
âBut we can do this.â I hooked my arm around her waist as she dove at me again, and simply hoisted her off the ground. Carrying her in the crook of my elbow. She screeched and kicked, alternating between laughing and yelling at me. I smirked, turning to make our way back down the hall.
âNot that way, Niko!!â She cried, punching the back of my leg. âYour rooms are the other way!â
I sighed, rolling my eyes. âWell, at least one of us has a good sense of direction.â I commended her, and turned to the correct hallway.
We were greeted by a few amused smiles as I toted her down the hallway. But despite a slight tinge to my cheeks, I found I didnât much mind the audience. A vastly different experience than at our own castle. The goblin attendants were polite, stepping out of our way with small bows. Smiling and chuckling to themselves as we passed. I nodded to each appreciatively, formally, pretending I didnât have a wriggling, squealing child tucked under one arm.
By the time we reached my rooms, she was laughing so hard she had gone limp in my grip. I shouldered open the door, extinguishing the torch and finally placing her back on her feet. She shoved at me again, as if to knock me off my feet. She did manage to rock me back a step, but I simply scooped her up again and dropped her over my shoulder until she relented and begged to be put down once more.
She huffed and puffed for a moment, her face flushed, and I smirked at her again. âThatâs not fair! Youâre bigger than me!â
I fluffed her soft hair. âWell, like I said. Youâd better get used to being this size.â
âWould I be tall for a goblin?â Morgana asked me, swatting my hand away again. âDo goblin babies come from eggs? Are they very small?â
âCertainly not eggs, chickadee,â I replied, shaking my head, âAnd I would imagine they are quite small, yes. If you were a goblin, I suppose you would be tall⌠And also green.â
She giggled at my teasing, leading the way with a skipping step to the bedroom. I saw her eyes dart about, considering my chambers again. âWhy are your rooms so empty, Niko? Whereâs all your stuff??â
I stood behind the couch, following her eyes around. âWell⌠I donât have much âstuffâ here.â
âWhy not?â
â... I havenât been here very long.â
âWhere does stuff even come from,â She mused, walking over to the empty sitting room. I followed a few paces behind her. âI just remember having stuff. I donât remember getting it.â
âIt depends on what it is.â I replied softly. âSome things you need, so you make sure you get them. Other things are gifts. Or perhaps tokens or remembrances. And those you collect as you go.â
She led us out to the balcony, leaning carefully over the edge. I wandered closer nervously, eyeing the long drop. And I made sure to stay within grabbing distance. Just in case.
âOk. Iâll just have to get you gifts then.â She assured me, hanging off the railing by her arms to curl back to look at me. âThat way your rooms wonât be so empty anymore.â Her head tilted to the side. âThough I guess youâll be moving in with Grier soon. Is that where all your stuff is now?â
I stiffened and my face fell. She must have noticed, because she straightened herself out and leaned against the balcony again. We looked quietly out over the mountain range for a few minutes, and my thoughts swirled about dangerously.
âAre you excited to get married, Niko?â She asked me after a little.
I winced at the word, then glanced at her sidelong. âItâs⌠complicated, chickadee.â
âWhy?â
I resisted the urge to sigh. âWell⌠I⌠I need to get married, to keep our people safe⌠I donât really get a say in that... and whether or not Iâm excited for it, I didnât really get to choose it.â
She seemed to think about that for a second. âYeah, but⌠the goblins are nice. And Grier is fun. And youâll get to be a King, right?â She bounced a little, coming off the railing to wander over and draw circles on the cold glass of the window. âItâs like how sometimes you tell me âhow do you know you donât like it if you donât try itâ whenever you want me to eat something yucky or wear something ugly.â
âItâs not quite-â
âAnd then sometimes, I try it, and I do like it.â She continued, ignoring me. âValerianus says that since weâre Princes and Princesses, we donât always get to do everything we want. And Grier said the same thing about being King. Some things we have to do. ButâŚâ She turned back to me. âThat doesnât mean we canât like it too. Even if we didnât get to pick it.â Her head tilted to the side. âSometimes we think we want one thing, but really, it's not very good for us. Or it's only good for a little while. Like desert!â She danced from foot to foot as she spoke. âAnd then, the thing we have to do is actually really good for us⌠Like broccoli.â She grinned. â...Grierâs even green too.â
I raised a brow at her. â... Did you just compare my fiancĂŠ to broccoli?â
She giggled. âI just think that you always say green things are good for us⌠And Grierâs green too⌠So that means heâs probably good for us.â
I laughed loudly at that, shaking my head. âChickadee, you are a wonder.â
Her reply was cut off by a knock from inside. Before I could even think to say anything, she had darted back through the rooms and opened the door.
âGood afternoon, Princess,â Came Seocâs voice as I made my way more slowly to the foyer, âYou are just the royal I was hoping to see.â
âI am?â She asked excitedly, bouncing on her toes. She glanced over her shoulder at me as I slowly approached.
Seoc offered me a bow, and I returned a nod before he turned back to Morgana. âYes, Your Highness. Your rooms are ready, and we have staff on hand to-â
She squealed so loudly the goblin nearly toppled over in shock. âMy very own rooms in a goblin castle!â She cried, bouncing up and down. Morgana spun, grabbing my hand. â Come on Niko! Letâs go see!â
I sputtered an apology to Seoc, who only grinned knowingly and led the way down the hall. Morgana was practically floating beside me, she bounced so much. And when we reached the soft pine doors, she broke away to sprint in and dart from room to room. Pointing out this or that feature, marveling at the mirrors... Greeting the startled goblin decorators who waited for instruction there.
I spent the rest of the day watching my sister decorate her quarters to her heartâs content. Asking for more curtains, more blankets, more pillows. I wasnât sure where the goblin attendants managed to find the things she asked for, but each more ludicrous item she described they seemed to manage to procure out of thin air. By the time the sun had set, she was, for once, exhausted. Though still giggling with excitement. They brought us a light supper in her newly decorated chambers, and she regaled me with a retelling of a story she had read while I was away. Her new Lady wouldnât be able to start until the following day (Morgana finally picked the one named Safa and sent word earlier), so Seoc was more than pleased to attend to us both for the time being. Hibik even stopped by once to see that everything was progressing smoothly. I wondered briefly about another goblin, but pushed that worrying thought from my mind.
I couldnât remember the last time I had been able to spend so much time with Morgana without being constantly guarded or interrupted by other things. I couldnât remember the last time I had seen her smile so much either. It left me in a pleasant mood, with the echo of a smile on my lips. Though I could feel the lingering buzz of my unattended thoughts permanently at the back of my mind throughout the afternoon.
When Morgana finally settled for the evening, I wished her a goodnight, and made my way out. Heading back to my own chambers down the hall, a walk so easy even I could manage it without assistance. Poor Seoc had been exhausted by my sisterâs antics, and I had told him to retire early. I had a feeling tomorrow would be a busy day as well for him. My mind was heavy with the weight of my thoughts, and now without my sister to distract me, they flooded my consciousness again. I strode numbly down the hall, hardly paying attention to my surroundings.
So when I approached the door of my rooms and saw the goblin King leaning there against the wall, I nearly jumped out of my skin. I blinked at him stupidly.
â... I thought maybe we could talk more?â He proposed softly. âI didnât like how we left things and... and I wanted to⌠maybe explain myself⌠again...â
I almost sighed, considering him, but couldnât help my lingering good mood. â... How long has it been since your last confession?â I asked almost timidly, my voice dry. âSurely you must be filled to bursting since this morningâŚâ
He gave me a toothy smile at my quiet teasing. I flicked my eyes away and rubbed at the back of my neck shyly.
âI do have a tendency to do that, donât I?â
I nodded, then glanced at my door. Swallowing another sigh. â...D-do you⌠do you want to come in?â
The goblinâs grin turned sheepish. â...If itâs not too much trouble.â
I led the way into my chambers, hesitating in the foyer briefly before moving to the bedroom, seeing as there was nowhere else to sit. It was the first time I regretted my lack of furniture since moving in. Grier slowly sat on one side of the couch there, but as soon as I sat down too he quickly slid closer. I tried not to stiffen, even as my heart raced.
â... Are you still mad at me?â He asked, breaking the silence that had blanketed us.
I did sigh then, shaking my head. My mouth opened, then I slowly closed it again.
âI never meant to force you into this marriage,â He started to gush, âI never wanted-â
I held up my hand, silencing him. âI-I⌠I just need a momentâŚâ I mumbled. â... To sort throughâŚâ
I jumped a little as he reached up and took my hand in his. But I let him slowly entwine his fingers between mine once more, and our hands fell onto the couch between us. I swallowed hard, my heart skipping in my chest. His touch had my thoughts swirling, and I struggled to try and sort through them. The King waited as patiently as he was able, yet with each passing breath I felt more and more anxious as I struggled to find what I wanted to say. Which simply made it more difficult to do so.
â... I-I⌠Iâm notâŚâ I shook my head again, then cleared my throat quietly. âWe⌠I-I mean⌠you⌠or more rather⌠IâŚâ
He glanced at me, lips twitching. His amusement made me even more flustered. I mumbled something incoherent and swallowed hard again. I started as he brought my fingers to his lips, resting a gentle kiss on my knuckles. I assumed he meant it to be a comforting gesture. It seemed to have the opposite effect on me. My face flushed, and I stammered something else before clamping my mouth shut. Letting the silence settle about us once more. I stared down at our hands now between us once more, uncertain what else to do in that moment.
â... I am sorry to have⌠perhaps pressed too hard for this moment,â Grier began, finally breaking the silence, âBut⌠I have been dying to speak to you sinceâŚâ
I didnât answer, chasing a nervous breath down my throat with a quiet swallow. Still staring at our hands. I wasnât sure how to answer. How to say anything at all. It was as though my tongue had completely forgotten the purpose for which it was originally designed⌠at the moment it was hopelessly lost in the memory of the taste of his.
âCan we perhaps⌠speak bluntly for a moment?â He asked, his voice soft with a foreign somberness to it. â... I donât want to make you uncomfortable.â
I adjusted my tongue in my mouth, glancing over at the door. Remembering that morning with a wince. âI-I⌠I apologize for⌠f-forâŚâ
He shook his head, and I stiffened as he slid a little closer. Lifting our clasped hands up to rest on his knee between us. I swallowed again, my eyes darting about in an effort to find some measure of distraction. No matter how small.
âYou donât have anything to apologize for,â He reassured me quietly, tilting his head in an effort to try and catch my eye, âI just... Wanted to say a few things. And to ask a few things, if you are willingâŚâ
I looked down at our hands, then back over to the door. Shifting nervously. âB-but⌠ah⌠MorganaâŚâ I dropped off, my excuse sounding weak even to my own ears.
He chuckled lightly. âSheâll be fine for the night now, surely⌠I justâŚâ He sighed, brushing his hair out of his face with his free hand, âThis⌠this is hard for me⌠â
My heart suddenly plummeted into the pits of my stomach, leaving my head spinning. Hard for him? What was hard for him? My mind raced with a thousand possibilities, each one worse than the last. My outburst that morning had made him realize we wanted different things. Or perhaps he had been insulted that I did not return his affection. Perhaps he had come to his senses finally. Realized he didnât like me as much as he thought. Or maybe he wanted to ask permission to take a lover. Or maybe something about⌠I raked my brain. What had happened yesterday? What had he seen? Was it my father? Was he worried about him? Or perhaps something to do with Morgana-
âI miss you.â
I jerked my head up, staring at him, absolutely flabbergasted. He shuffled, and now it was his turn to avoid my eyes. My mouth opened, then I closed it again. What in the godsâ names did he mean?? I had hardly been away from the man for more than two weeks. And during that time I had been dragged through emotional upheaval after emotional upheaval, been forced to face the most hated parts of myself, forced to face my fatherâs disownment, forced to⌠to feel this warmth. To wonder at the lighter-than-air feeling his company left me with. Forced to endure a heart that couldnât decide whether it should race or freeze in my breast. All because of this man. All because I had hardly left his side. And yet, now he said he missed me? ⌠Had I changed? Had I regressed to my previous self, all hard walls and blunted edges? Or perhaps my outburst from the morning had left him thinking I was an angry and bitter person. I ached with each thought, wondering what he could possibly mean.
He didnât leave me waiting long. âIt sounds silly, I know, but itâs the best way I can think to describe itâŚâ His scarlet eyes drifted to our hands, and he slowly turned mine over. âI miss you. I miss you constantly. Youâre⌠youâre all I can think about.â He ran his thumb across the palm of my hand. âAnd.. itâs hard, because⌠I donât want to scare you, or rush you⌠But I just⌠I always want to be touching you. I always want to be near you. I think about the taste of your mouth, and the feel of your body against mine⌠andâŚâ He smirked sadly, âAnd then I miss you.â
I stayed frozen, stuck in place. A haze around my head, a tingling in my fingers even as he ran his back and forth over them. My heart thudded so loudly in my breast I was certain he would be able to hear it, and I sought to quell its thunder. I wanted to speak, to say something back to him. But my thoughts were a swirling mess, and I couldnât pull more than a word or two from the thicket. And nothing I pulled felt right.
âI⌠I was very angry at the castle yesterdayâŚI could barely control it⌠â He told me softly, âWhen I saw that⌠To think that heâŚâ His jaw clenched, and he shook his head, âI hurt for you. I thought more than once about barging back into the chambers and justâŚâ He sighed, âAnd now IâŚâ Another sigh, and he shook his head. â... But then, Iâm selfish... Iâm selfish, and needy, and desperate for your attentionâŚâ He was still refusing to meet my eyes, staring down at our hands. âI want to be the one to make you happy. I want to be the one to have the secret of your smile. I want to know all your little intimate, hidden parts you keep tucked away. I⌠I want you to be mine. Completely mine. And I donât want to share you with anyone elseâŚâ
I didnât entirely feel like I was sitting there at all. I felt as though I was floating above us, listening to Grierâs confessional. But I was filled with that strange warmth, one becoming more and more familiar each time it flushed my frame from head to toe. I peeked at his face shyly from beneath my dark lashes, and noted that he was still avoiding looking at mine.
âIâm trying to be patient⌠Trying to stay in your comfort zone⌠But ahâŚâ I thought he looked a little more green than normal, and a sad smile played at the corners of his thin lips. âBut I wanted to keep you abreast of my thinking⌠so if you ever wanted to⌠to take some initiative, or ask for something⌠I wanted you to know that youâll never overstep your bounds, or make me uncomfortable, or unhappy⌠or anything like that⌠Not that you have to,â He added quickly â⌠If this is all you ever want, Iâm happy to give that to you too⌠â He squeezed my hand gently. âYou could ask me for the sun, and I would be content spending the rest of my life in darkness to give it to youâŚâ Grier gave a soft laugh, shaking his head. âAah, I didnât⌠I didnât mean to gush quite so much⌠especially after this morningâŚâ He rubbed at the back of his neck with his free hand. âYou must think me an absolute-â
I liked the taste of his voice in my mouth as I suddenly caught his against it. I liked the way he drew in a sharp breath, then quickly recovered to reach out with his free hand and catch the back of my head so eagerly. I liked the way he slid closer, until our thighs brushed together, stretching to the farthest extent of his reach. Lacing our lips as deeply against each other as he could. I shivered as his fingers ran along my hair, and his thumb traced just below my ear.
A wave of shyness washed over me after a shuttering beat of my heart, and I pulled back. Blinking and blushing profusely. He lingered nearby, our faces nearly touching, his hand still at the back of my neck. I opened my mouth, breathing shallowly for a moment, trying to will the words to my lips. I saw his scarlet eyes watching me quietly, filled with something I had no name for which left my heart skipping sporadically.
â...IâmâŚâ I started, my voice barely beyond a whisper, âI-Iâm⌠Iâm not good at thisâŚâ My words felt smushed and mumbled, and I wasnât sure heâd be able to understand me. But I had to try. I wanted to try... I stared down at our hands, still clasped on his knee. âI⌠donât⌠I d-donât⌠I donât always know⌠what IâmâŚâ I dropped off, swallowing hard. âWhat Iâm⌠feelingâŚâ I scoffed at myself softly. âI never know⌠And⌠A-and I donât trust myself⌠with thisâŚâ I chanced a glance up at him. â... With you.â
His hand slid down, cupping my cheek. â... Can I help? ⌠Am I rushing you?â
I hesitated, bringing up my hand to lay over his. Hooking my fingers around it as if I was going to pull it away. But then, I closed my eyes, and let myself lean into it instead.
âYou do help.â I breathed against his wrist, and I felt him squeeze our other hands together. âAnd⌠I need⌠I think I need you toâŚ. Push me⌠j-just a little.â My eyes half opened, and I stared off at nothing, still tucked into his palm. âBecause⌠b-because Iâm⌠Iâm scared.â
â... Of me?â His voice was equally soft.
I shook my head, then hesitated again. I finally took his hand from my cheek, looking down at it still wrapped in my own. A dull ache formed inside me, and I felt my brow furrow. Felt lines crease into the edges of my eyes as I tried to find the words to describe whatever was pulsing through me. Whatever sensation this was⌠whatever emotion. But I couldnât think of the words. Couldnât find how to tell him⌠Then I brought his hand to my chest, and flattened his palm against it, pressing my hand lightly on top.
â... Of thisâŚâ I squeezed my eyes shut, shaking my head slightly. Wondering if he could feel my heart sputtering beneath his fingertips. âI-I donât⌠I donât trust it⌠I donât understand itâŚâ
I felt his weight shift beside me, felt the brush of his breath against my cheek. Then the heat of his lips there, as faint as the air had been a moment before. He released my hand on his knee, bringing it up to hold my face steady, as he planted a gentle kiss on each of my eyelids. I shivered beneath his touch, and felt his fingers curl beneath mine against my chest. I didnât dare move, afraid of breaking the moment. Afraid of losing the warmth curling through me.
â... After what I saw yesterdayâŚâ Grier murmured softly, his hand gently caressing my cheek, âI canât imagine that you were ever allowed to have emotions⌠let alone express them⌠But⌠I see you, Nikostratus,â He pressed his hand a little tighter to my chest, â... I see how much youâve changed, just in the short time youâve been hereâŚâ He stopped, and I opened my eyes to find him kneeling on the couch, his legs behind him, perched slightly above me with scarlet eyes vibrant. I looked away from them shyly. â... Change is the wrong word⌠Especially with Morgana hereâŚâ I winced, and he leaned closer at that, resting his forehead against mine. âIâd like to think you two are more alike than perhaps you may first appearâŚâ He sighed softly, his breath spilling across my face, and I drew it in deeply, greedily. â... It makes me wonder what it wouldâve been like ifâŚâ He dropped off.
I started to shake my head, but he stilled me with his hand. â... I donât want this for herâŚâ I told him quietly, my voice thin. âI donât want her to⌠to end up like meâŚâ
âYou act like that would be such a bad thing.â He replied, running his thumb along my cheek.
â... Is it not?â It was a question, but one that echoed with the sad solidity of a declaration.
âI like you. I like everything about you.â He pressed. âI think she would be lucky to end up like you.â He stilled me again as I tried to shake my head once more. âI think you fail to see what a good person you are. You are smart, and loyal, and kind. You are selfless, and honorable.â A smirk slipped across his lips. âAnd undeniably handsome.â
âS-stop⌠S-stop thatâŚâ I finally managed to shake my head, starting to pull away from him, suddenly sensitive to his touch. âI-I am⌠I am timid, and hesitant⌠I-I prefer being alone ⌠I-I have a temper⌠and I donât know h-how to⌠to explain myself⌠I donâtâŚâ I stopped, glancing at him out the corner of my eye, â... I never takeâŚâ
âAnd I am an arrogant ass, who throws a fit when heâs not the center of attention.â Grier returned even as my voice petered out, catching his fingers in my vest and giving it a gentle tug. âIâm pushy, and demanding, and emotional. Iâm impatient. I never think things through.â I let him pull me a little closer, and he ran his thumb over the buttons running down my front. âAnd Iâm selfish, for wanting someone as wonderful as youâŚâ
âYouâre notâŚâ I blushed, then averted my eyes. âAh⌠y-youâre not⌠that much of an assâŚâ He laughed at my shy teasing, and my lips twitched at the corners, feeling a little bolder. â... Youâre a good King⌠and youâre thoughtful⌠a-and amiable⌠and⌠a-ahâŚâ I dropped off, my face growing even hotter. âA-and⌠gentle... And nice âŚâ I stared down at my lap, running my thumb hesitantly across his knuckles still latched around my vest.
The fingers of his free hand came back to my chin, tilting my head. Just in time to meet his lips as they came to bear against mine. I let out a fluttering breath, hitched and fearful, but couldnât help melting into his mouth. Leaning close. Feeling my head spin and that strange yet wonderful warmth filling me. He kissed me deeply, his fingers skipping back up my jaw to cup the base of my skull. His fist balled in my vest, pulling me closer to him. My free hand smoothed across his knee where he had left it. I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing myself to relax. Forcing myself not to think about anything else, and to just enjoy that moment⌠that moment of bliss, and the taste of his tongue as he slipped it between my lips. The heat of his hand on my neck. The insistent tug of his fist at my breast.Â
By the time he finally broke away, he was practically on my lap. Half kneeling over me, half sitting, so that for once I had to tilt my head back to look up at him. Which I did, shyly, and he smiled. Baring those sharp, pointy teeth at me.
âI love the taste of you,â He murmured, stroking his fingers back and forth across my neck, âYou always taste sweet, and you smell sweet too. Iâm obsessed with the way you smell.â He leaned down, nudging his nose against the tip of mine. âI love the color of your eyes, and Iâm haunted by that ghost of a smile you keep trapped at the edges of your lips.â His hand traced lower down my neck, slipping idly beneath my collar. âAnd your voice⌠I could listen to your voice all nightâŚâ
I didnât know how to respond. I tried to find words, tried to ease the heat currently burning my ears. But the warmth was in my chest now, and though I longed to say something back, I just⌠couldnât seem to make the sounds come out. So I opted for an alternative answer⌠and I brushed our lips together again, as gentle as a feather. Hoping that action would relay my meaning to him. I felt him leaning after me as I drew away. My eyes flicked to the side, hiding away from him even as he tilted his head to try and catch them once more. He seemed to consider this for a moment as my face flushed and my heart raced.
âEveryone has their faults, Nikostratus,â He told me, running his fingers along the bare skin at the top of my spine, âOnly a statue can strive to be perfect.â Grier dipped, falling back into my line of sight and locking our eyes together. âBut something made of stone can never live. And to be alive means taking the bad,â He snuck in closer, until his lips brushed against mine as he spoke his next words, âWith the good.â
I let myself give in to the temptation of his breath on my lips. Closing the gap and kissing him again. And again. And again. I felt him ease himself closer, sliding his arm around my neck, slipping his hand at my front between the stealthily unbuttoned layers of fabric. The heat of him was intoxicating, and my own hands reached for his waist. I wasnât sure if I pulled him there, or if he slid across himself, but suddenly I found him on my lap. His bottom resting on my thighs, his knees on either side of my hips. He curled over me, bending my head back with the passion of his kisses until it scraped the back of the couch. He kept one arm wrapped around my neck, the other was wiggling its way further under my vest.Â
He seemed unable to sit still, like a wave cresting and falling, crashing slowly against my body. It sent a hot gush of emotions through me, and burned my core like fire. My hands slid around his waist, stacking one arm on top of the other to crush him to me, one palm pressed between his shoulder blades. To feel the life of him with each breath that pressed our chests together. To feel the passion as his hips slowly ground against mine. I would have groaned, had he allowed a single molecule of air to pass between my mouth and his. Instead I shuddered, quivering beneath his touch. Lost in the storm of his kisses. The taste of his mouth, the feeling of his tongue swirling around mine.
The goblin pulled back suddenly, and I found myself gulping in deep breaths of air that felt cold compared to the heat of his lips. My eyes fluttered open, and I stared up at him, my jaw a little slack.Â
âNot yetâŚâ He breathed against me, and I wasnât sure if it was for my benefit or his, considering the hunger in his eyes. ��... I can do better than this.â
I almost laughed, my gaze flickering down to his lips. âBetter?â
âSpecial.â He crooned, dripping closer to me, and my breath shuddered from my own lips. âYou said you wanted it to be special.â
I was distracted by the way the candlelight danced in his eyes, and didnât respond for a moment. â... Did I?â I mumbled, belatedly.
He chuckled, and I could feel his breath against my cheeks again. âYou did.â His teeth pricked my bottom lip lightly. â...And I live to please.â
âA-ahâŚâ I stammered, then blinked earnestly, trying to clear the swirling heat in my head. â...R-rightâŚâ
His eyes traced around the edge of my face, and he settled on my lap carefully. My face burned as I became vividly aware of his growing âinterestâ in me as he did. And I could definitely feel my own blood rushing through more than just my face. My breath tasted different, and I itched to feel more of him. Burned to return to our previous pursuit... My heart raced and skipped, and my thoughts became a useless swirl again.
âPerhaps I should go,â He mused, though his voice sounded leery of the thought, âLet you⌠sleep. Itâs late.â
He started to shift, and my arms suddenly tightened around him. My own eyes widened in shock of my own daringness. And I felt a shiver of anxiousness ripple through me as he looked back at me in what I supposed was surprise.
âO-or⌠Or you⌠y-you couldâŚâ I swallowed the fast forming lump in my throat, and wondered if my mouth had always been this dry. âA-ah⌠You could⌠s-stay.â
âStay?â he echoed, and I nodded sheepishly, instantly dropping my eyes bashfully away from his. But that didnât mean I couldnât hear his grin in his voice with his next words. â... Well, I suppose I could⌠though your bed is smaller than mine.â
His teasing left my ears hot, and I suddenly recalled the fact that he was still sitting on my lap. And was likely just as aware of the bulge between my own legs. I quickly loosened my hold on him, rubbing at the back of my neck with one hand and trying to look around as if the empty bedchambers were far more interesting than the goblin perched on my person. He chuckled softly again, and I noticed him look over my shoulder for a minute. Chewing over the offer.
âI-itâs ok.â I quickly gushed. âYou donât have-â
âI want to.â He cut me off, then his hand came up, turning me to face him. âJust to sleep though⌠If youâll have me.â
I nodded again, stealing quick glances at him periodically before darting my eyes away. I jumped slightly as he leaned back over me to kiss me again. Tenderly, as if I might dissolve into smoke should he be too rough. For half a second, I thought I had...
He broke away and slid off my lap, catching my hands up in his as he did. Tugging me lightly to my feet. And leading me over to the bed. My heart skipped and pounded in my breast, leaping about wildly. He released my hands to pull off his boots and stockings, and to untuck his tunic. I watched him for as long as I dared, then turned my back on him with the pretense of taking off my own boots to place in their usual place. I stood them neatly, folding my stockings and placing them alongside the rest. I tried not to think too much about the soft creak of the mattress as I heard him settling onto the bed behind me. Carefully, I removed my vest, brushing it down quietly and folding it. Then, a little more hesitantly, I removed my tunic. Folding that as well and placing it with the rest. I pretended not to notice the goblin watching me as I turned back. I noticed his shirt discarded on the ground and picked it up. Folding it neatly and laying it over the back of the couch. I even straightened his boots, placing them next to mine. Delaying my return to the bed further to walk around and put out the candles. Carefully, so as to not drip wax.
I heard his soft chortle, and glanced at him over my shoulder. He reached out a hand, as if to pull me in by it, and I nearly swooned for the sight of him. Stretched across my bed, propped up on one elbow. Reaching out to me while bathed in moonlight⌠I wished I could go splash myself with cold water. To make sure I wasnât dreaming and for⌠other pressing reasons.
Timidly, I walked around the end of the mattress, to the empty side closer to the window. Climbing slowly in beside him. It was warm enough to lay with our torsos above the blankets, but he spread them lightly about our legs as we settled into them. I watched quietly, laying on my back with my head turned towards him. Stiff as a board.
âWould it make you feel better if I didnât face you?â He teased gently, seeming amused. He rolled onto his side, facing the couch. I traced my eyes over the fine muscles of his back and shoulders. Studied the delicate drape of his long, wild hair.
Hesitantly, I dared slide closer. I let a few breaths pass before I turned onto my side, and reached towards him. My fingers faltered, and my hand shook. But after a few more heartbeats, I braved slipping my palm over his shoulder. His hand came up, brushing his fingertips along my knuckles. His touch soothed me a little more, and I slid closer. Until I could feel the heat wafting off his back. Before I could fully work up my courage, the goblin scooched towards me, closing the last of the gap between us and tucking himself into my chest. I tensed for a moment, then relaxed as the soft and spicy scent of him filled my nose. I slowly wound my arm around him, resting my head on the pillow, my chin and nose brushing his hair. It was soft, like satin, and thicker than I would have thought. Messy, certainly, but without knots or tangles. I tried to calm the heat racing through my veins.
Grier traced his fingers lazily up and down my arm wrapped about his middle. As he did, I felt myself loosen a little more. And more with each passing minute. I let out a breath I didnât know I had been holding in a quiet sigh.
âCan I ask you something?â He murmured after a few quiet moments. I hesitated, then nodded against the top of his head. â... Would you want to move to my rooms? After we get married, I mean. Permanently.â
I tried not to stiffen again. Tried to let myself stay in that comfortable shape, curled around him. I swallowed hard, turning it over for a second.
â... I-I donât⌠I donât knowâŚâ I mumbled back. âIâd never really⌠considered... ummmâŚâ
âWhat about kids?â He asked. âLast we spoke about them, you said youâd ânever really thought about itâ. Have you thought about it more yet?â
âO-ohâŚâ I shifted, suddenly uncertain. âNo⌠not reallyâŚâ
â... Have you thought about our future at all?â
I swallowed hard again. âN-noâŚâ I confessed. âB-but itâs only been⌠ahâŚâ
He scoffed lightly, his fingers slowing their movement. âWell, I suppose itâs not like we need to rush⌠but I think about those kinds of things a lotâŚâ
I said nothing for a long time. He lay still in my arms, and I didnât relax again until his fingers restarted their movement. I sighed against his hair, blinking the tiredness from my eyes.
âI-I⌠I havenât⌠I canât seem t-toâŚâ I stammered. His hand paused, squeezing my forearm wrapped around him reassuringly. I adjusted my tongue in my mouth. âIâm just⌠uncertain⌠and perhaps a bit⌠umm⌠waryâŚâ
To my surprise, he nodded. âYouâve got a lot of walls, Nikostratus. And⌠I assume you put them in place to keep yourself safe. To keep yourself from getting hurt.â He squeezed again. âBut if youâll let me, Iâd like to help you bring them down⌠At least around me.â
âI donât know⌠I justâŚâ I slowly wound my arm a little tighter around him, pulling him deeper into my chest. âI-I⌠Iâve never been⌠been asked before and⌠I just⌠donât know...â I buried my face in his hair for a moment, then turned my head to the side once my lungs were filled with his scent. âI donât know how⌠how I feel⌠or⌠Or what I wantâŚâ
I hesitated, and must have drawn in sharp enough a breath that he felt it. âYou can tell me,â He told me softly, and I wondered what his face looked like at that moment, âItâs alright. Be honest.â
I shifted again. âIâm not sure yet if⌠If I really like you⌠or ifâŚâ Again I hesitated, and he squeezed my arm gently once more. â... Or if I am just⌠just finally letting myself⌠like someoneâŚâ I closed my eyes in denial of their burning edges. âI need more time⌠I-I need to know beforeâŚâ
He didnât say anything to that, and part of me longed to see his face again. To see what he was thinking, as I knew it would be plainly written across his features. Another part of me didnât. I wasnât sure what I would do if I saw the ache echoing there that I felt in my chest. It was better this way, I reassured myself. Better that I didnât let him get his hopes up, just to crush them later. Better that he knows now⌠I told myself that⌠but it didnât feel better.
â... Iâm marrying you,â I whispered, and tried to keep my voice from quivering, tried to keep from stumbling over the strangeness of that notion slipping through my lips, âI will never go back on my promise for that⌠butâŚâ I thought I felt him wince at the word, and I instinctively pulled him a little tighter to me. â... But I⌠I just⌠I just donât know.â I sighed, trying to fight the burning in my eyes even harder. â... I like this⌠I like⌠umm⌠th-thisâŚâ I turned my face into his hair again, trying to draw strength from the smell of it. â... I think I like thisâŚâ Now it was my turn to wince. â... I-Iâm sorryâŚâ
He ran his hand up and down my arm again. âDonât be. I asked you to be honest with me. To always feel free to speak your mind.â I felt him nod, and it made me pull him even closer, curling myself completely around his smaller body. âThis is your truth right now. Your emotions are always true, no matter how they make anyone else feel. I would not hold them against youâŚ. And I can wait. Until you knowâŚâ His voice dropped off, â... One way or the otherâŚâ He scooped up my hand around his middle, bringing it up to his lips to place a gentle kiss over the knuckles. Belittling the sad tinge to his voice. âAnd Iâll enjoy this. All of this. Because I already know my heart.â He kissed them again, then tucked it against his cheek and settled down to sleep. âI can wait until you know yours...â

There was an exasperated cry, and the sound of a door hitting a wall. My only warning before I was jarred fully awake by the added weight suddenly bouncing next to me.
âNiko! NikoNikoNikoNikoNIKO!â
I sat bolt upright, flailing a moment, then feeling the blood rush so thickly through my face I thought my head might explode. Morgana bounced on me, grinning like a fool. She clambered to her feet and continued to jump up and down on the mattress. Leaping back and forth in my bed with a long string of my name punctuating each pounce. My eyes went wide, and then darted to a flabbergasted Seoc and Hibik who now stood at the foot of the bed. Both babbling over the other incoherently. Beside me, Grier gave a grumpy moan, rolling deeper into the pillows. Somehow unperturbed by the ruckus around him. His sound however, had me nearly squeaking in embarrassment.
âNiko! Hibik says I have to ask you if I can go to the gardens. Are there lots of flowers? Can I go? Is it very cold?â She bounced over my knees, barely dodging landing on Grierâs legs, as her words came out so fast I could barely distinguish one from another. âOh!â She tilted her head to the side. âDid you know Grier is here too?? Is he still asleep? But the sunâs up already!â
âMy apologies, Your Highness!â Seoc finally managed, and he seemed to be panting, his slicked back hair disheveled. âSh-she was very insistent! I tried to stop her!â
The goblins were hastily shifting and moving back and forth, only adding to the overall chaos as Morgana jumped around. Hibik was speaking rapidly to Seoc in goblinese, who seemed to be trying to skitter from side to side as if to predict which part of the bed the Princess would be closest to when he got there.Â
âThey said you were sleeping! But itâs dawn! You never sleep past dawn!â She told me as she bounced, grinning from ear to ear as she ignored their frantic attempts to coax her down. âAnd I tried to tell them that-â
âCh-Chickadee!â I stammered, reaching up to catch her hand. âThatâs enough⌠C-come here.â
She dropped to her bottom, plopping down onto the bed beside me with her legs dangling off the side. The pair of goblins darted over, sputtering apologies in a mixture of Common and goblinese and bowing repeatedly. My face was so hot it hurt, and I struggled to get my mouth and mind to work in coordination. I tried to shake my head, made some attempts to soothe their rushed words. But couldnât seem to work up the volume to get a word in edgewise.
âGet. OUT. You fools.â Grier growled from somewhere behind me, his voice coarse with sleep. âNow!â
I jumped at the Kingâs angry snap, even muffled as it was by the sheets and pillows. I almost didnât recognize it as his. Both of the goblin attendants squeaked, nearly running over each other in their haste to obey the King. Obviously not wishing to suffer his wrath should they be seen hesitating. I was pretty sure I heard the soft thud of one of them tripping over their own feet before I heard the click of the door. Morgana spared the King a glance, but seemed otherwise unbothered.
âNiko, I was talking to Hibik, and he said that the kitchen is really big, so I was thinking-â
âChickadee,â I breathed, struggling to get enough air through my constricted chest, âPlease, I-I need a few minutes-â
âTo get Grier up? Itâs ok, he can come to the kitchen too. Or is he too busy?â She tilted her head to the side. âWhat do Kings even do all day?â
âChickad-â I tried to start again.
âWhy IS Grier here?â She asked, tilting her head to the other side. âDid you two sleep together?â I did squeak now, my entire body stiffening at her words. âI thought you would sleep in his room, because thatâs where all your stuff must be-â
âMorgana!â I snapped, my voice suddenly tight. She started slightly at that, finally looking up at me and falling still. Instantly I regretted my harshness, and swallowed nervously. â... Look, ChickadeeâŚâ I amended gently. â... Why donât you go with Hibik to the gardens? Or Seoc? Explore for a bit? I-IâllâŚ. Iâll catch up as soon as I can.â
She watched me for a second, seeming to think this over. I saw her hazel eyes dart over to Grier, still mostly buried in the blankets behind me. I winced, feeling the heat pounding through my head again. But tried very hard to pretend the goblin wasnât actually there.
âOk, I like that idea.â She finally agreed, nodding, and bounding from the bed. âSorry I woke you, Niko.â She leaned over my lap, forearms on my knees. âSorry Grier!â
His muffled grunt had me stiffening anew, and I blinked rapidly, swinging my legs out of the bed as if in denial that we were in the same one. Morganaâs small body, draped across them, came along with me, and she giggled. Leaping up to wrap her arms around my neck and give me a hug. I tried to release my tension with a sigh, but it only seemed to fan the flames under the balls of my cheeks.
âListen, Chickadee,â I told her softly, âWeâll⌠Weâll need to talk about this laterâŚâ She leaned back, looking up at me curiously. I fumbled, my lips becoming like butter. Then shook my head. âBut go explore for now.â I scooped the back of her head with my hand as she moved to run off. âAnd listen to Seoc and Hibik. Ok?â
âOk, Niko.â She replied exasperatedly, pulling my hand away and skipping off to the foyer.
As soon as she darted out the door (and obliviously left it slightly ajar behind her) I groaned. Dropping my face into my hands and releasing a breath so deep it made my shoulders quiver. My blood was still rushing in my ears, and I felt dizzy and lightheaded.
I nearly jumped out of my skin as a pair of warm green hands slowly slid across my shoulders. I lifted myself from my palms a little, enough to peek nervously at the King out the corner of my eye. My heart skittered and raced at his touch. Grier rested his chin on my shoulder, draping lazily over me. Giving a toothy yawn and blinking sleepily.
âThat was certainly a wake up call.â He mused, sounding both tickled and groggy, still a little hoarse.
â... I think Iâm going to be sick.â I moaned softly, and he laughed quietly at that.
I jumped again as his hot lips pressed to the soft skin of my neck. âBest thing for an upset stomach is restâŚâ Another light kiss. â...Come back to bed.â
I hesitated, fidgeting in place. Unable to reconcile the memory of the previous evening with the events of the morning. I glanced nervously towards the slightly ajar door.
âA-aah⌠B-but Morgana-â
âCan wait.â He trailed a kiss down my neck again, sliding his hot arms even further around me. âCome sleep some more.â When I cast him another peeking look over my shoulder, he grinned sleepily, his eyes still half-lidded. âSelfish, remember?â Another kiss. âI want you-â and another â-all for myself.â
I weakly gestured towards the crack of light snaking out into the hall beyond. âS-she ah⌠left the door-â
Grier murmured something against my skin I didnât understand, and flicked his fingers towards the foyer. And the door slammed shut forcefully. I heard the deadlock fall into place with a thud that echoed in the silence following. I swallowed hard.
âItâs too early.â He moaned letting up the press of his lips against my throat to sigh deeply and rest his cheek in the crook of my neck instead. I hadnât realized how flushed I was until I felt his own heat popping beads of sweat across my skin. âI donât know how you stand it. And all this sunlight-â He blinked at the window, scowling â-I miss my dark room.â
â... You could go back.â I mumbled dryly, and he chortled.
âNot without you.â He returned in a soft purr. The goblin trailed his fingers lazily up my sternum, sending a shiver down my spine. â...Come to bed?â
I glanced down at my bare feet, shaking my head again shyly. âI-Iâm too awake now.â
He gave me a gentle tug. âThen be awake. Iâll sleep for the both of us.â
I shook my head once more. â...Y-you and Morgana must be in a competition to see who is more incorrigible.â
He laughed a final time, laying a final kiss against the side of my neck. I couldnât help curling away bashfully. The King hummed a soft sound at that, reaching up and turning my head to the side. Then planted a proper, if sloppy, hot kiss on my lips.
âWell, Iâm going back to sleep.â He declared weakly as he drew away, considering me through half-lidded eyes. âIâve already been awake far too long for my liking.â
He flopped back into the sheets, and I looked over at him, surprised. As I watched, he burrowed deeper into them and gave a hefty sigh⌠I wondered quite how he managed that so easily. I felt a pang of jealousy, but quickly brushed it away. Standing and heading over to my trunk to pull out a fresh tunic and vest. I chanced a glance back over at him as I pulled it over my head and tucked it into my trousers, only to find his breathing had already deepened. I pretended I wasnât checking on him after every other button as I fastened my vest, and that it was absolute coincidence that I ended up next to the bed a few moments later. Though of course, since I was already thereâŚ
I reached out timidly, daring to brush my fingertips along his wild bangs. I drew in a sharp breath, looking around. As if someone might pop out and demand to know exactly what I thought I was doing. No one did though, and I returned my attention to his sleeping face, half submerged in the soft blankets. I dared trail a little closer, bending over him. I decided he was either a very good actor, or already in a very deep sleep. Still, I felt emboldened by his stillness, and placed a shy, almost curious kiss on his temple.
I drew in a sharp breath, withdrawing in surprise, my brow furrowing. I forgot myself, and cupped my hand along his jaw, then slid it up to his forehead. Confirming what my lips had already deduced. The goblin stirred beneath my palm.
âGrier, youâre hotâŚâ I told him, trying to keep the nervousness from my voice.
He shifted sleepily, but a wry smile played across his thin lips. âYouâre not so bad yourselfâŚâ He mumbled groggily.
âNo, I-IâŚâ I stammered exasperatedly, âI mean⌠Youâre burning upâŚâ I couldnât help but cup my hand around the back of his head. âD-do, do you feel alright?â
He groaned, weakly trying to push my hand away. âIâm just tired. Join me, or leave me be.â
âIâm getting Hibik.â
âNooo, gods, Iâm⌠Iâm fineâŚâ He grumbled, but seemed to be struggling to open his eyes again. âDonât get that old⌠that oldâŚâ
I didnât linger a moment longer, spinning and practically running to the hall. The door wasnât even fully open before I was shouting for the older goblinâŚ

Someone might have done this before, I didnât check the tags thoroughly but whatever.
I only know Mephisto from a few places so I wasnât very knowledgeable about him and decided to do research. I plan to do this for Agnes/Agatha Harkness and House of M. Feel free to DM me to talk about WandaVision theories.

1. Who is Mephisto?
Mephisto has many aliases such as The Devil, Satan and Lucifer. He is an extradimentional demon. He calls his realm âHellâ in order to exploit Earth human beings' belief in a single being of absolute evil. He is not the actual Satan but he allows himself to be called names that human beings give to their conceptions of devils. Mephisto is continually seeking to add more spirits of sentient beings to his realm by inducing living sentient beings to submit their wills to his. Mephisto apparently seeks primarily to enslave all human souls.
2. What are his powers?
Mephisto is an experienced and highly skilled liar and strategist. He is also a highly skilled sorcerer with near infinite knowledge of arcane and occult subjects.
His powers:
Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Superhuman Stamina, Superhuman Durability, Regenerative Healing Factor, Immortality, Penance Stare immunity, Medium Awareness, Netherworld Dimensional Power Tap.
§ Shapeshifting:Mephisto is more of a force than a physical being, one that can take any form that he wants. His "normal" appearance is that of male, red skinned humanoid with vampiric aspect and attire. However, Mephisto can appear in any form imaginable, having turning himself into animals, humans of any gender, or more commonly into other demonic forms, ranging from a stereotypical image of Satan to a giant reptilian monster.
§Mystical Deal:Through a Faustian bargain, Mephisto is able to fulfill almost any wish that someone wants in exchange for something that they have - usually their souls. Once the agreement is sealed, it is virtually impossible for the victim to escape compliance.
§ Ensnare Astral Bodies:Mephisto also possesses certain powers enabling him to capture and detain the astral bodies (sheaths of the soul) of recently deceased human beings. Mephisto does not have jurisdiction over all the souls of humanity's recently deceased. It is not yet known what the prerequisite conditions are for him to be able to manipulate a human soul, nor are the precise means by which he accomplishes the feat known. Apparently these conditions require that the human being in question willingly agree to submit to Mephisto's will. It is not known how a human being may free himself from bondage to Mephisto, nor whether Mephisto will forever retain control of the souls he has obtained. Nor is it known whether or not Mephisto "feeds" on the psychic energies of such souls as other demons do.
§Dimensional Entrapment:Apparently Mephisto can entrap a living human being within his realm through sheer physical force, even if the person did not submit his or her will to him.
§Reality Manipulation:Mephisto was able to create the realities Earth-7161 and Earth-71241 by creating a small alteration in the Earth-616 reality.
§Magical Manipulation:He can control magical energy for various effects, among which are the augmentation of his own physical strength, levitation, teleportation, the projection of mystical energy as force blasts, invisibility, matter manipulation, image projection, size transformation of his body or other objects or beings, the creation of temporary inter-dimensional apertures, and so on.
3. What is his relationship to the characters in WandaVision in comics?
Tommy and Billy Maximoff: Mephisto's soul was used by Wanda to give birth to the twins.Mephisto reabsorbed them, effectively ending their existence.
Wanda Maximoff: Mephisto absorbing the twinsâ souls drove Wanda mad, resulting in her altering all reality.
Agatha Harkness: Agatha claimed that Scarlet Witch's children were actually fragments of the soul of Mephisto and wiped Wanda's memory of her children rather than fight to free the two from Mephisto when he reabsorbed the twins.
4. WandaVision Theory
So far: We have 6 episodes. The storyline gives off House of M vibes. Agnes seems to be Agatha Harkness from the comics which Iâll be talking about in another post. Dottie who is the key to the town only appeared in episodes 2 & 3 of the show. Director Tyler Hayward is pushing Wanda to defend herself.
THEORY:
Everything up to Wandaâs pregnancy was pushing Wanda to think about children despite no children was seen until episode 6. The whole talent show was âfor the childrenâ despite no children being present. Dottie was in charge of the talent show for the children. When Dottie was giving a speech about the talent show, she said âThe Devil is the detailsâ and Agnes said âItâs not the only place where he isâ. She again said âFor the childrenâ during that speech.
Director Hayward first appeared in episode 4 and all he did was to antagonize Wanda. He is outside and he is giving Wanda every reason to stay inside The Hex. He is also painting her as the villain, trying to make others see her as the villain as well. He knew that Wanda would have deflected the bomb he sent into The Hex and that it would just anger her, making her less cooperative. He is also psychologically pressuring Wanda. You might say âHe is the regular assholeâ but what if he isnât?
As mentioned in Powers, Mephisto can shapeshift into any form imaginable. Remember that on the people and their real life ID board, we didnât see Dottie. What if Mephisto took the shape of a former soul he collected? That soul can be old and hence that is why Dottie wouldnât be identified. The other minor characters were identified and they were shown. If Dottie was also identified then we would have seen her on the board too. Even if she is identified, there is no guarantee that Mephisto wouldnât take her form. Dottie was the one who organized the event âfor the childrenâ, giving subtle message to Wanda for creating her own children. She even said âThe Devil is the detailsâ which is normal to say normally but not when the fans theorized Mephisto involvement after it was announced. Agnes, who is likely to be Agatha Harkness who mentored Wanda, said âItâs not the only place where he isâ. I believe she, as an ancient being, knows about Mephisto and she subconsciously warned Wanda then. After what Wanda is supposed to do is done, Dottie doesnât become a main character. Maybe that is the real Dottie in episode 5. Mephisto is done with her after Wanda got pregnant. After that, I think he started to impersonate Director Hayward. As mentioned above, everything Hayward did made Wanda to be more unstable and to want to stay in The Hex. I think Mephisto would want that and he is a perfect strategist. Maybe he didnât shapeshift into those people but maybe they had a deal with him and he manipulated them into doing his bidding (See:Powers). Additionally, everything that happens inside The Hex makes Wanda stay inside.
In episode 6, Pietro calls âdemon spawnsâ to Tommy and Billy. This isnât even subtle. I think it is either subconscious warning that Wanda told herself via Pietro. Or it could be Pietro himself since he died once and maybe has knowledge that isnât aware. Or it can be Mephisto being a little shit. He might have gotten Pietroâs soul when he died. In Powers, it is said that the conditions for him to entrap a recently deceased soul is unknown. He might have gotten Pietroâs soul when he died and now he is using Pietro to manipulate Wanda.
As mentioned in Powers, Mephisto can manipulate magic and reality. I think that is how Westview is affected. The reality inside The Hex is ever changing.
In episode 5, Norm played the pronoun game âStop herâ instead of saying âStop Wandaâ. It wouldnât make a difference for Vision since he already thinks âsheâ is âWandaâ. What if that âsheâ is actually âDottieâ? Norm didnât say her name because he doesnât know it. He only knows she is the one doing him harm. This might be the other clue is that Dottie is indeed Mephisto himself.

Some things I want from Legacies S3
This is going to be all over the place and pretty long. Thisâll start with the general storyline things, then get down into smaller character arcs and whatnot. Iâll try to keep it somewhat organized and grouped by character but I make no promises. Also if you wanna talk about any of these feel free to dm! Iâm incredibly bored in quarantine and would love to chat
- An introduction of a greater storyline past Malivore and moving away from the monster of the week thing. I know Legacies is supposed to be something different from TVD and TO, and the monster of the week concept is an interesting way to explore the universe past what we already knew, but with the premise as it exists and has been carried out now, itâs hard to develop the characters and relationships. If the characters are fighting new things every week, that makes it hard to give characters like MG and Kaleb their own stories. With a villain to anchor the season as the Big Bad, we can get characters that havenât been given much of their own storyline a way to get more screentime as they go try and find someone or something with answers.
- GIVE HOPE HER OWN STORYLINE PAST BEING THE HERO/MARTYR AND BEING IN LOVE WITH LANDON. Hope is supposed to be the main character but this doesnât feel like her story. As awesome as it is seeing Hope be a badass and fight monsters, I want more development from her as a person.
- Kind of ties back into the last one, but let Hope have more Dark moments like the Death Spell incident. Moments that show that while she isnât just another Klaus, she still shares some of his tendencies towards violence and lashing out. This could work really well if they decide to keep Landon out of the picture for a few episodes.
- Let Hope and Landon break up amicably (assuming Landon isnât really dead which letâs be real he probably isnât) so that, again, they can grow as people. Then, if you want, they can get back together. Or just stay broken up and be friends
-Â A resolution to the Necromancer - heâs a fun character and while I think heâd be fun to have around for a bit, I donât think heâs an anchoring villain for a season. Plus to me I kinda figured that they were gonna wrap up his storyline in the last 3 episodes that they didnât get to film before the production shutdown so chances are weâre getting this anyway.
- Either bring back Ethan, Maya and Mac more prominently, or donât bring them back at all. Donât get me wrong, I like the town normies storyline when it comes up, but it doesnât come up much. Apparently, they were supposed to be in the last 3 episodes more but who knows. With the show already feeling kinda crowded (because again, the format of the show now doesnât really allow for a ton of characters since they arenât significantly developing, especially when these characters are in a setting completely removed from the main action of the showâs narrative), either have the normies for more than just getting caught in a magical crossfire, or put them to the side and focus on who you have at the school.
- The TVDU has progressed past the need for Alaric. Thatâs all Iâll say.
- The show being a little more self aware at the ridiculousness of it all. Like yeah, itâs not completely without that, but the last thing we need is the show devolving into a Riverdale, where the first season was aware of the ridiculous nature of itself, and then it started to take itself way too seriously.
- MORE LGBTQ+ REP. The show has done fairly well thus far compared to other CW shows but thereâs still so much than can be done. The show doesnât need to have show-stopping coming out storylines or anything - itâs actually the opposite. We get the casual drop of Josie having dated Penelope in the first episode of the show which was great. So letâs have more simple stuff like that. More mentions at crushes and other past romances - for all characters - that just allow for other sexualities to be normalized and not some earth shattering thing.Â
- This ties into the last one but I felt like it deserved its own bullet, but also what is V NEEDED is rep of trans, genderfluid and non-binary characters. Again, it doesnât have to be a huge storyline, but itâd be nice to have some recurring characters who are not cis. The show is meant to be set in a near future, so I think itâd be nice to show a normalized view on differing gender expression and sexuality as sort of a hope that such a future will exist.
- Hope loving beignets, eating/wanting to eat them all the time, and getting powdered sugar all over her dark clothes from them. Chances are, if youâre from/have been to NOLA, youâve tried beignets and loved them because theyâre amazing. SO LET HOPE HAVE HER BEIGNETS DAMN IT.
- More Wolf Hope moments. Let her turn more and just run because it letâs her feel more connected to Hayley :â( also the Crescent birth mark if that was ever a thing for Hope... I canât remember, Iâve seen different things about it, lmk (politely) if that was ever a thing that Hope had
- Hope painting and sketching. Itâs one of the few connections she still has with Klaus, SO LET HER EXPRESS HERSELF DAMN IT. (Yes, any time I say SO in all caps I need to end the sentence with DAMN IT, itâs a Thing now)
- MIKAELSON FAMILY MENTIONS AND APPEARANCES. Granted this one is different because there are real life schedules and whatnot that need to align, but even just more mentions of Mikaelson family members and others like Vincent would be nice. Yeah weâve had some in the past, but it would still be nice to get some more. Also at least a mention of Rebekah and Kol checking in on Hope (assuming the writers arenât going to pull something dumb like âoh the memory spell doesnât work long distance like that so they still donât remember herâ)
- Hope also talking more about Hayley, Elijah, and Klaus. Again, feeling connected to her mom every time sheâs a wolf. Always and forever, like Elijah always said. Telling stories about her father that put him in a better light than just being âThe Great Evilâ of storybooks.
- Hope being open with her friends about her past and how TERRIBLE it was a lot of the time like, yâknow, people trying to kill her before she was even BORN.
- Iâve said this before in a separate post (which Iâll link at some point so expect an edit to this post) but Iâd love for something to happen and for Hope to leave the school and go to NOLA and stay with Freya, Keelin and Nik because sheâs tired of having to be the savior and still not saving everyone. (Also in that post it says Alaric comes and gets her and brings her back to the Salvatore School but weâve progressed past the need for him in the TVDU so instead itâll be the twins)
- Hizzie moments because whether you like them as romantically or just as friends, they are a DUO and we deserve more iconic sarcasm as well as genuine moments of friendship and caring
- Lizzie being the absolute Queen of Comedy
- But more importantly, Lizzie being more open about her issues and taking steps to have better mental health.
- Lizzie and MG having more open conversations and letting a relationship develop naturally - yes there has been a lot of development since season 1 but I feel like they both have a bit of growth to go before they should enter a relationship, if thatâs something that happens
- Lizzie being happily single for a bit and not going for a guy thatâs going to try and turn her into a vamp and keep her in a prison worldÂ
- MG and Kaleb getting proper storylines or at least more play than just being the Local Vampires who help depending on the situation. They deserve WAY more than that
- ALSO MG and Kaleb backstories. How did they die and how did they get vampire blood in their system to keep them from dying permanently?
- Josie dealing with what happened pre and post Dark Josie and facing that she has always had some darkness in her. Yeah the dark magic definitely didnât help, but she was willing to perform a spell that she didnât know on a human over a football game and ended up breaking his arm. Not to mention, she was setting Penelope on fire as early as the first episode. It seems like weâre getting this since Josie locked away her magic in the last episode, but still, I donât want this to just be a one episode reflection and then move on like she didnât cause a lot of harm.
- More Hosie crumbs
- More Jade. OK admittedly this is probably really due to the fact that Giorgia Whigham is a Big Crush for me, but also the show really did start integrating her in a bit more with the black and white episode, which makes me think theyâre keeping her around at least for a little bit. And I think she and Josie dating at least for a little while would be good for both of them. Jade was a ripper for 10 years in the prison world, and Josie was just consumed by dark magic and is now coming back from that. I think theyâre a good (probably short-term) pairing that will help each other grow, but eventually break up because they just arenât it for each other. And I saw this elsewhere on here, but someone pointed out that Jade could do what Penelope tried to do, but in a healthier way. Yes, Penelope was trying to put Josie first and show her her power and importance, but thereâs a way to do that without gaslighting her sister and being manipulative. Sorry, I did not mean for this one to be so long.
- More Specialty episodes. The black and white episode was really fun in my opinion, and the show doesnât have to be like that all the time, but stuff like that keeps the show interesting, as long as it makes sense within the context of the episode and storyline.
- Josie wearing the necklace Hope gave her
- I havenât mentioned Rafael much and thatâs because, despite being a main character, he hasnât really done much besides run away with Landon, and feel guilty about having a crush on Hope. Heâs personally not a favorite character of mine, but I think if he got more of a storyline - likely revolving around the fact that he was dead and being used as a pawn, as well as the fact that he possibly (but probably didnât) kill Landon - itâd help give more to like about him.
- Caroline having a better reason for being away from the school than just researching the Merge. Like, her daughters have been fighting monsters, Josie almost died at the end of season 1, they were trapped in a prison world, Josie succumbed to Dark Magic, THEY LITERALLY HAD A MERGE EVENT and sheâs still gone??? Thatâs not the Caroline we know. If sheâs going to be gone (because like I said before, it all depends on Candiceâs availability and willingness to come back), at least come up with something different than researching something her daughters have already done by this point.
- Since Landonâs not dead, let him unlock his full Phoenix powers. Itâd be cool.
- Letâs have one season where Landon doesnât run away like we donât all know that heâs gonna be back within like 2 episodes if that
- More Dorian. I actually really like his character, heâs kind of a breath of fresh air sometimes so Iâd like more scenes with him when possible
- A conclusion to Malivore and intro of a new villain. I kinda covered this earlier, but at this point, unless Malivore is going to become a tangible entity to fight instead of some black goo, itâs not a very interesting story thread to keep around for the next however many seasons Legacies goes on for.

Hey Diary - Part 2
PART 1 of the Hey Diary Series
Monday came and I can finally experience my new life at school. Itâs been about 3 days since my transformation from a total nerd into this campus crush, and my last usage of that Diary App in this phone. My heart is beating fast at the thought of how people would think of me in this new body. Iâm super excited yet nervous of what may happen.
You see, I may have gained this heavenly figure and this new reality, but I did not get any memories for it. I have no idea who my new friends are. Still, I need to get to school and I should at least try and keep an act until I know what the heck is supposed to happen, but before that, I need to keep my online fans updated. I took a snap of myself in the mirror and posted it on my feed, then I went straight to school.
Stepping into the gate already gave a new feeling. Everyone was looking at me and every time I look back, they would shy away. There were other people who waved at me but I have no idea who they were.
I went to my locker to grab my stuffs for our first class. As I do so, I saw Keith on the other end with his friends, Peter and Tom, glaring back at me.
He have my phone in his hand. Itâs still the same bully but without his daily routine of pushing my face to my locker door. He walked pass me taunting me with my phone, then proceeded into our room.
I bit my lips in annoyance. Guess, I still have to deal with this guy.
âHeeeeeeey, Felix.â
Someone tapped my shoulder and I jumped on my place. âAh-â I almost screamed.
âA little jumpy today, arenât we?â The guy asked as I turned around.
I was kinda expecting it was Keith but when I looked, It was Alex, my new friend. Well actually, heâs supposed to be my friend since the first day in this school, but in this new reality. I remembered his name because he was the one who kept bugging me last Saturday night in my DMs. He has a bit stocky body, but its not that bad. He wears thick square glasses that enlarges his deep black eyes. If I could comment, Iâd say heâs almost the same level as my old body but thatâs only basing on his looks. As for what I saw in his timeline, heâs not really that kind of a nerd. He barely even studies and complains on his feed too much. Heâs a very friendly guy in my class, actually, but that didnât make him an easy target for Keith.
He smiled at me and was sucking in air as if heâs trying to pull some question out his chest.
âYouâre bout to ask something?â I raised my eyebrows and he nodded.
âWell... Apparently thereâs this thing online... Itâs uh...â He kept cutting his words, hesitating to ask me something.
I guess I know what it was. I gritted my teeth and looked away.
âLemme guess. Thereâs a rumor spreading about me, right?â I said.
âWell... Yeah...â
âDamn, dude. Whatever that may be, do you think Iâll do that?â I said. My body cringing when I tried to act cool and say âdudeâ. âAnyway. Letâs just get in classâ
We started walking to our classroom door. He kept on talking to me, mostly about trying to workout to get rid of his belly. I also learned that he happened to befriend me because he thought I could give him a few advice in working out.
When we entered the room, everyone was also looking at me. Not with disgust but admiration. Everyone said hi to me except Keith and his crew who were laughing to themselves.
âYo faggot.â Keith called me. âDid you get your morning suck today?â
He and his crew laughed louder. Where did they get that from? I never wrote that in my old phone? I furrowed my eyebrows at that thought. Theyâre probably just making things up without really basing on my old diary.
âHey idiot. Do you think anyoneâs gonna believe that?â A girl raised her voice at Keith.
âWell, I donât know. Why donât you ask Felix himself if what Iâm saying ainât true.â Keith laughed, making everyone look more annoyed than myself.
I sat down to my chair with Alex now sitting beside me. Our first professor went in and began his lectures. As for me, I was busy tinkering with the Diary App. If the Diary App helped me last time, I bet it can help me more today.
With my eyebrows still furrowed, I began to stealthily type without the teacher noticing.
Monday
Hey Diary,
I wish whatever that thing about me that Keith and his crew tried to spread would backfire to them.
I tried to save this in hope that the changes would happen immediately, but a pop up appeared.
ALERT: Input too short
I tried to type again but this time, I tried to lengthen my sentence. Still, the alert kept appearing.
I heard our professor clear his throat and my attention jumped to him. He caught me using my phone. I smiled and chuckled.
âPhone.â He said, pointing to me.
âYeah, Iâm sorry Mr. Dew. I-â
âPut it back to your bag, now.â He ordered and I quickly followed.
I was lucky enough that it didnât get confiscated. I put my attention back to his lectures and jotted down notes.
Why wont my log work though? What does it mean by âInput too shortâ? Whatever it is, I might need to fix that when I have free time. I shouldnât go back to that in class or I might lost my new phone too.

Lunch break. I was with Alex in the cafeteria. Some other girls wanted to sit with me but Alex kept on telling them that he seats are taken. He would eventually chuckled at me and ask if I never get tired of people following me anywhere I go. I would just laugh back, remembering that this is my first day in this new life. As I tried to take a bite on my food, I saw Keith his friends across the cafeteria. He was still looking at me. Glaring at me. I then looked away, showing a bit of annoyance again. I then pulled my phone out my pocket and came back to my Diary App.
Input too short, huh? Well letâs put all our hearts in this log.
Monday
Hey Diary,
Keith and his friends are spreading fake news about me again, although I have no idea on what that is about. They mightâve been spreading news about me being gay or a cocksucker. Whatever that may be I donât think I canât stand them this time. Iâd be fine if they spread something real about me, something Iâd be too guilty to fight back, but if they spread something I never did, I might not get a grip of myself.
I wish whatever they told everyone would backfire to them. I wish Keith and his friends would live the rumor they had spread.
I clicked saved and went back to my food, but as soon as I try to bite, my vision started to blur once more. Alex seemed to notice whatâs wrong and tried to shake my shoulders while calling my name in panic. I tried to shake my head and blink fast but it made me lost my sight much faster. Soon, I blacked out once more.

I groggily opened my eyes and rose up where I was lying. Then I realized I was back in my bedroom. It was night time and my lights were dim. I looked to my right and saw dad sitting on my chair.
âDad?â I called.
âOh youâre awake! This friend of yours called me to school telling me you passed out. The nurse said you probably ate something bad and passed out. You were puking hard in the clinic this afternoon and I was super worried. I thought Iâm gonna lose you too...â
âDad. Iâm okay. Donât worry.â I tried to comfort him.
âIâm glad you are...â He came to me and gave me a hug.
âIs Alex still here?â I asked.
âAlex? Oh, well... It wasnât Alex who helped you. He probably coward out when you fainted and-â
âWait? Then who-â
Before I ended my question, someone entered the room.
âKeith?â I looked at him with confusion. He was carrying a glass of milk and some cookies which were probably from my dad.
He looked at me back with this dumb grin on his face and put his glass on my table. âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âIâm just gonna leave you two be. Enjoy that cookie, Keith.â Dad went out my room, leaving me and Keith alone together.
My eyes widened at the sight of Keith. Out of all people, Keith was the one to help me? I puffed out air in disagreement. I just looked away from him as he munch on his cookie. He then pulled a chair and dragged it near my bed. He first finished his food before he talked to me.
âDude. I just canât leave you dying there. I saw everyone just standing around you. Admiring you instead of actually helping you.â
âLike I should believe you. Alex couldâve tried to help me.â
âAlex? Dude was so paranoid he canât even dial your dad.â
We were silent for a while as I try to ignore him. I grabbed a schoolbook from my nightstand and pretended to read, wishing him to go away.
âFelix. I know I did a LOT of bad things that not only affected your physically, but that doesnât mean I shouldnât help you when you need it.â I noticed that his tone was a lot different than how he used to talk to me. âAnd... I just wanna say Iâm sorry.â
I closed my book hard at those words. Heâs actually apologizing...? He grabbed my arm and shook it slowly.
âCould you take my apology?â I pleaded.
âWhat do you want? Is this some sort of a prank? What? Are you trying to film me and use this for blackmail? Whereâs your camera?â
âFelix can you just listen to me? Do you think Iâll go this far just to bully you?â
âYeah? Why not? Just tell me what you want and let me go for fuckâs sake.â
âLet me suck your dick.â
My eyes widened. Bigger than what I did when I saw Keith enter my room. Did he just ask me to let him suck me off? I whipped my arm to make him let go. I looked at him with my face clenching. What he said just made me mad.
âFuck off Keith. Iâm not gonna be a part of your show. Get rid of your camera and get out.â
He shook his head and laughed. His laugh isnât those typical sinister sounding one that youâll hear when villains get exposed for their crimes. It was more of a sad chuckle when someone gets rejected. He reached for something in his jacketâs right pocket. From there he pulled out my old phone and gave it to me.
âIf there was a hidden camera here, what would I use it for? To stain my reputation too? Iâm sucking you off then what? Tell everyone that: Hey guys! Felix let me suck his dick! Dude... Gochiusa BLOOM episode 8 impressions

Here we go, the long awaited Rize episode is upon us. Sheâs been rather sidelined this season, aside from maybe the marathon episode with Chiya. But now itâs finally her time to shine!
I didnât have much time to write this review, due to various circumstances, but I hope itâs still worth reading.
The episode opens with Rize waking up Cocoa while imitating Chinoâs voice and manners, such as calling her Cocoa-san. This scene is reminiscent of the post-credits scene from season 1 episode 12, although it has been implied Chino wakes up Cocoa all the time. The rabbit Cocoa sleeps with has been given to her by Chino at the end of Dear My Sister OVA, but it was Rize who helped Chino make it.
Rize had a fight with her father about her wanting to become an elementary school teacher, and stayed over at Rabbit House. She seems to think neither her father nor even Cocoa and Chino take her seriously. To be fair, it kind of comes out of a left field. The justification for it (which is revealed later) is also rather silly, as Chimame arenât even elementary schoolers. Itâs interesting to see if the manga will ever get to the point where Rize is teaching a class because I donât think there have been any elementary schools introduced yet or any character who attends or teaches in one.
Rize herself also has some doubts about it, since she worries she will come out as too strict (and called a âdemon sergeantâ, which is a callback to Dear My Sister where she took command over Chimame-tai), although Rize has become considerably more gentle since the events of DMS. Cocoa volunteers to become Rizeâs teacher to show her how itâs done, but ends up making Rize do all the work while she just lazes about.
By the way, the book Cocoa is reading in this scene is called âCaffeine Fighterâ which was mentioned before as one of Aoyamaâs works based on Sharo, and this is the first time we see (although in very low resolution) what the lead character is supposed to look like.
Chino takes over the job, although it seems she just wants help with her homework (the book is labeled as âMathematics, 3rd grade of middle schoolâ and this particular lesson concerns the quadratic function and its graph). Rize uses her rabbit stamp on Cocoa and then on Chino for solving their tasks, and finds out that itâs a very good motivation.
One thing that western viewers might overlook is the prevalence of stamps in the Japanese daily life. Instead of signing legally binding documents, youâre supposed to stamp it with an officially registered personal seal called hanko. Things like stamp rallies are popular and you can often get a visitor stamp in various temples and train stations. So the fact that Rize carries a stamp with herself at all times is not at all unusual.
Next, Rizeâs signature dish, napolitan pasta, makes an appearance. In the episode 6 review I lamented that Rizeâs pasta never showed up, but now we can finally see what itâs all about. By the way, despite its name, this dish is actually Japanese in origin, and was inspired by American military rations, which makes it quite fitting for Rize. Cocoa uses the Italian word buono to describe the pasta, which means âgoodâ.
During the bathtime, the stamps easily wash off, so Rize gives Cocoa and Chino stamp cards, just like to Chiya in episode 5. Not aware of this, Cocoa and Chino think this signifies their special bond. However shortly after, Cocoa boasts about it to Chiya at school, and realizes that not only Chiya has it, but also Maya and Megu. In the manga Cocoa and Chino confront Rize about it directly after, but the anime sandwiches another chapter in between.
Like I mentioned in the episode preview, chapters 2 and 7 from the volume 6 of the manga share a similar theme of studying, so itâs not surprising they were unified into one episode. Interestingly the chapter 7 is titled âSweet Skip Stepâ which shares with the title of the episode âStamp, Sleep, Study, Smileâ the pattern of words starting with the Japanese syllable âsuâ. Another episode sharing this property is season 2 episode 8 titled âSneaking Stalking Stalker Storyâ.
This second part of the episode is more Chimame-focused, and brings up the concept of juku, or âcram schoolâ, which are very widespread in Japan. This is a small private school that students visit after their public school classes in preparation for the exams. Of course the way itâs portrayed in the episode is just regular tutoring, so you wouldnât know the difference.
Anyway, Cocoa has opened a juku in Rabbit House and is now sporting lab coat and glasses look. Megu attends the âschoolâ and we learn that the reason why she wants to go to Rizeâs school is because her mother went there too. Cocoa asks if thatâs really her own decision, and we later learn Megu isnât really sure about that. Immediately after, Meguâs phone rings notifying her that she needs to âtransfer to another classroomâ, and Rizeâs comment implies that Cocoa hasnât really even started teaching yet. In the manga thereâs a 1 hour gap between the Cocoa/Megu conversation and her going to another class, and Megu thanks Cocoa for her lesson.
The next class is Japanese literature taught by Chiya (she calls it ĺ˝čŞ ânational languageâ which implies that the show is really set in Japan, or at least a Japanese-speaking country). Megu is impressed by how seriously Chino takes her studies, and how she strives to excel both in school and at her job just like Chiya and other high school characters (it was previously mentioned that Chinoâs grades arenât very good). However Chiya gets distracted and decides to spy on Sharo, who is teaching Maya at the time. It seems Sharoâs house isnât very soundproof at all and they easily get discovered.
Maya isnât sure about being able to pass the scholarship student exam and asked Sharo to help her, as Sharo has also passed this exam in the past. Sharo is eating some strange foodstuff that I thought was onigiri, but looks more like a cookie wrapped in nori for some reason.
Anyway, Chimame get invited by Rize to âonsen poolâ but they think Rize is going to scold them for not taking their studies seriously. Meanwhile Rizeâs dad is calling Takahiro to make him convince Rize to come back. Apparently during the war, Takahiroâs skill was persuasion, while Rizeâs dadâs special technique was rushing into action like Leeroy Jenkins.
The âonsen poolâ which previously appeared twice in season 1 is largely based on hot spring baths of Budapest, which I had visited last year. This scene is used to develop Meguâs character, specifically her insecurities and sense of inferiority towards Chino and Maya. It doesnât help that Maya and Chino are jealous of her body and call her fat. Then, Maya and Chino decide to compete in swimming, suggested by Chino, who in the manga almost drowned during a hiking trip and that was her motivation to get better at swimming. In the anime (season 2 episode 11) she didnât really drown so she just says she likes swimming now for some reason.
Anyway, Megu canât keep up with them (both metaphorically and literally) and this time drowns even in the anime adaptation. However this scene was also altered from the manga, in the manga itâs implied that Maya and Chino drag her out while Rize comes too late and Maya calls her slow. But in anime, Rize is the one who saves Megu and is roundly praised by Chimame-tai.
The next scene parallels the one from season 1 episode 10 where Chimame-tai name was officially established, after Rize outruns them to Rabbit House. This time Chimame already got used to the name (which means something like âblood blisterâ in Japanese), so theyâre ok with being called this forever if they win.
When Rize comes back, Cocoa (who held a grudge for so long that you mightâve forgotten about it with how fast-paced this episode is) kabedons Rize and asks for explanation for the whole stamp card business. However it turns out to be just a prank and an excuse for Rize to have a home cooked dinner with everyone. Rizeâs accomplishments in previous episodes are also brought up, and she gets another round of praise. And then everyone gets lots of stamps.
Rize gets a stamp too when sheâs asleep. This scene was in general modified quite heavily compared to the manga, to better fit with the rest of the episode I guess. One scene that was cut was Cocoa and Chino discovering Rizeâs notes about their food preferences and regular guests of Rabbit House. Also, the phone conversation between Rizeâs dad and Takahiro was the last panel in this chapter so Rizeâs situation with her dad was never resolved.
The anime adaptation does provide a resolution in the form of a cinematic car scene with a tense dialogue between Rize and her father. Cars are very rare in Gochiusa universe and the last time we saw one (season 2 episode 10) it also belonged to Rizeâs family. Rizeâs father is driving an Audi R8 with plate number TO-526, which might refer to his voice actor Touchi Hiroki who was born on May 26.
The car eventually stops on the bridge, which is basically a metaphor for reconciliation (i.e. âbuilding bridgesâ) and the color scheme changes from red to blue, as Rizeâs father eventually apologises to her and Rize gives him a stamp of approval. And so concludes the 8th episode of Gochiusa BLOOM, which finally gave Rize the recognition she deserves. I guess weâll see if she can reach her goal of becoming a teacher in the future manga chapters. And thereâs still four more BLOOM episodes to watch!

Things I want to say about Saint Seiya Soul of Gold that no one asked for but I will tell you anyway
(This are just personal opinions)
In order to make this more understandable, we will break it down to sub topics
1. The Gold Saints motivations and opinion on the matter
As expected, for the way the story is told, we , the audience, are expected to think Aioria is the one doing the right thing and acting the way one is suppose to act in a situation like this (fighting for justice is the right thing, let's make it clear before I go on) while saints like, let say, Deathmask, who is just "chilling" while pretending he is not depressed, is treated like a bad person. And Deathmask IS a bad person, but not for not wanthing to fight here.
But he is not the only one who behaved in an "inappropriate" way. Dohko was fighting and drinking, Camus was being a traitor, Shaka was being cautious, and they were all right! They didn't HAVE to fight.
I accept this may be my own point of view as a tired over worked millennial, but they are Athena saints... they were not brought back by her. Other than thankfulness for getting their lives back, they had no obligation to fight there. I am actually surprised they didn't try to go back to Hades to help the bronces as soon as the realize they were alive again.
Just because Aioria and Milo are so freaking intense (fucking Milo died way to soon),it does mean all of them should have jump into the that train as soon as Simba did. The scene when he asked DM to fight and the crab says no it's shown in a way that we would think Deathmask is being a bitch, but he just died in Hades...his contract has basically expired (and he didn't thought his cloth would take him back), but his argument still stands.
This is getting way to long so I just will say that, aside Aioria, the saints general reaction was to test the waters first, on their ways, and then take action. Shaka wasn't even goikg to move, if Athena hadn't answers his prayer, he would have stayed in that cave forever).
(Camus situation was weird. Calling him a traitor doesn't feel ok because he wasn't actually working for Andreas or helping him on his evil ways, he was there because of his friend. A person he apparently cares about and who he ends up killing... typical for the aquarius saints).
2. Dokho
And then, there's Dohko. I have seen comments saying he should had acted his age in SoG, that is over 200 years old and fightingfor sport and driking like that was not in character and stuff like that...but here is the thing, if you had spend over 200 years guarding a freaking tower, and then die almost immediately after, I bet you would like to relax if suddenly you were back to life. And he wasn't acting out of character, he has been shown to actually have a care free attitude, while being completely serious on his mission as a saint and the voice of reason for his young peers (Next Dimension shows us that he called Shiryu boring for being so strict and intense when they first met). He wasn't being immature or careless, he was thinking things through. Actually, he was the one who doubt about Lyfia, like a normal sensitive person would, when she went posseded mode.
3. ASGARD
I've heard people who didn't like the spin off at all saying that there was no need to go back to Asgard...and I halfway agree.
The place itself is not a problem, but the way they managed the time. This is a short series and we lose sooo much time with new characters.
The reason why the original Asgard worked in the classic was not only because the God warriors were interesting and actual threats to the Bronzes, but because by that time we know our five protagonists very well. We had seem them develop through the course of the series. This didn't happen with the Gold Saints, as defined as their personalities are, we hadn't actually had time to actually spend time with them! I get why Aioria is the protagonist, he is a fan favorite, heck he is one of mine, actually. But he is one of the more developed, and was it really necessary to keep him away from the other gold saints? Wouldn't it had been better to have a spin off about the gold saints FOCUSED ON THE GOLD SAINTS?
Maybe I am lowkey salty that Aioros was barely there. I get that he is meant to be more a symbol than an actual character, but I want to see him being flawed, I want to see him interact with others in a more casual way. I want to see him in actions but insted all he did was "behind the scenes" and that kinda sucks...
(Also none of the new asgardians are interesting, and they could have done so much with a god such as Loki whose mythology is actually fun, but no! Let's take the safest road, right? )
4. IDK how to title this section
Kanon is not there and that sucks cause he is my favorite. But joke aside it would had been interesting to see him there (but more on that on a different post...eventually)
5. I did enjoy SoG, despite what you just read.
This show had some good moments
The confrontation between Shura and Aioria was maybe my favorite part.
Aioria fighting alongside Aioros was fantastic, I loved that moment, the brothers are back together and it was great (and this is the moment that, in my mind, play against the show because I was like "hey...why wasn't the whole thing like this")
Aphrodite. he was the real hero of the story. They would have lose without him...probably
So yeah, SoG was a mess , the animation was so bad it was actually funny, I couldn't care less for the new characters, and the gold saint didn't shine as much as they could. And I was going to end this post with "but at least we got something" but, you know what? No... we deserve better.
I want better
P.s. the concept of not only blood but any type of fluid that comes from Athena can produce a god cloth is weird and I don't think they thought it through.

Pet Store Pet - Intro part 2

This is just the second part of intro, setting up Kitâs world, after this thereâll be some unconnected ficlets, an intro to the other notable character, and I guess eventually some plottier things. Part 1
Kit found it difficult to keep track of time, because time meant numbers and numbers had been trained into him as a thing that was off limits. Owner kept a clock in the store that only had the moving hands, and no digits to be seen, and that made it easier to follow the events of the day during shop hours because it was just shapes that corresponded with when things should happen. But he couldnât count minutes, or estimate how long something took, without feeling a swell of dread in the pit of his stomach and abandoning the idea.
So he had no idea how long heâd sat âmeditatingâ when the sounds of someone coming in the back door filtered up through the floorboards. He was alert instantly, huffed a small breath and shifted back and forth on his knees. Brandon was going to see him like this, and it felt so private, this thing his Owner made him do.
âReally good Kit, just stay there a little longer.â
He nodded, and made a low sound of agreement but doubted his Owner heard as he trotted off down the stairs to meet Brandon. Loud voices soon came back up the stairs, along with the heavy thunk of two sets of shoes on uncarpeted steps.
âIâve got coffee brewing, and a little something to turn it Irish if you want it. Weâve got some time before the goods arrive.â
âCool, yeah, but I better keep it clean for now unless you want me to do shoddy work. Iâll save the good stuff for later. Hey, wow, KitâŚâÂ
He heard footsteps come near and closed his eyes, opened them again at the feel of a hand petting his head. He tipped his chin back and Brandon smiled and winked. He clenched his jaw.
âNo smile for me today? Gonna make me think you donât like me.â
âKit.â His Owners voice was flat and hard, a warning. He raised the corners of his mouth in a tight lipped smile.
âAww, has he had you working hard? I hope you have enough energy left to help me, youâre the best little helper.â
âIf anything he slacked off today.â
âIs that why theâŚâ Kit felt a shoe nudge him on the hip. âNot that Iâm complaining, just donât usually see you punish him.â
âItâs not a punishment, heâs just remembering his place,â his Owner said.
âAlright, Emile whatever you say. He sure looks a little miserable is all.â
Kitâs insides knotted themselves into a tight ball, he wasnât supposed to show displeasure. Would Emile be angry? Had he screwed up again?
âYeah, well, I knew youâd like that.â
âI do, I really do. You know me well, Iâd tip my hat to you, if I were wearing one.â
Kit saw Emile look pleased with the praise, smug almost, and he didnât hang around in getting Kit unclipped from the wall, ready to show him off more. Emile left his hands bound and he shuffled along on tingling legs. He noted it absently, heâd been left long enough for his legs to go numb, and now the feeling rushed back in. That was a longer than usual.
He sat crossed legged on the floor between Brandon and Emile as they drank coffee and traded gossip. He heard a deck of cards being shuffled and poker pieces dropped into stacks and sighed. He didnât like when they played cards around him because he couldnât follow the rules, or tell who was winning, so he couldnât guess who might be in a bad mood later. At least from down here he couldnât get a headache from trying to understand because he couldnât even see.
He jolted as a leash clipped onto the front of his collar and looked up expectantly. His owner draped the leash over one knee and Kit had to kneel closer not to be choked. A hand rubbed between his shoulder blades and he tried to relax into it.
âAs we donât have time to play a full game, I thought whoever had the last winning hand gets to have Kit until they next lose, deal? Whoever has him at the end, wins.â
Brandon laughed, low and sensual. âAlright, and what a nice visual incentive he makes.â
He found himself passed between the two men as they played, shuffling around on his knees as the leash was passed from hand to hand. Emile started off winning a similar amount to what he lost but before long Kit found that he sat at Brandonâs feet more than not. The man ruffled his air and draped an arm to rest on Kitâs head, or pressed his leg up against Kitâs shoulder. It wasnât pleasant⌠until it was. He slipped into a state of calm, being on the floor, staying where he was told, it was safe. He was behaving and that was goodâit made him feel good. He couldnât get into trouble when he was pleasing them. And the warm touches, however invasive they might become, were nice on his chilled bare skin. He leaned against Brandonâs leg and sighed, his shoulders ached and he only jolted a little when firm hands rubbed the stiffness out of the muscles.
They got more animated as time passed and he started to hope the shipment would arrive sooner rather than later, even though he hated that part too. Brandon got cocky and showy, yanked on the leash and had Kit kneeling with his head slightly down so he could put his feet up on Kitâs back. Kit closed his eyes and tried to think calming thoughts, this could be just like meditating if he tried hard enough.
Brandon didnât let up, though, and soon the leash was under Brandonâs foot and he pulled up the other end until Kit careened towards the floor at the tug, no hands to balance with and slippery trousers between his legs and the carpet. Brandon yanked until Kitâs nose was an inch from the ground, his ass stuck up into the air and his bound hands clenched behind his back. The foot came down on the leash and pinned him there.
They laughed, and Brandon nudged him in a way that might be playful under any other circumstances. He stayed there, prostrate, until Emile got a phone call and they had to hurry downstairs to process the new arrivals.
There were two, this time, putting the shopâs number of pets for sale up to sevenâ just one less than full capacity. They were brought in shivering, with their heads covered and Kit nervously shifted from foot to foot as the men talked around them.
âI thought we were only getting one,â Emile said, furiously clicking away on his computer.
âWell thereâs two do you want them or not? Make up your mind Raser, we donât have all night.â
Kit winced at hearing his Ownerâs last name. Emile wanted to keep up friendly appearances and said his last name didnât inspire easy acquaintance. For Kit it brought mind sharp edges and danger, and sometimes that fit just right when Emile was angry with him, when he disappointed.
âI wasnât expecting to pay for two.â
âCome on, man. Twice the stock canât be bad right?â Brandon asked.
âIf I can sell them, Lord knows what might be wrong with them if theyâre pawning two off on meâŚâ
One was slight and pale, but tall. The other stockier and very quiet. Worryingly quiet.Â
âThis oneâs easy, she wonât give you any trouble, too scared to do much. Probably list her as a docile and itâll be fine. This guyâs a little more⌠well youâll see. A Whumpees-R-Us reject apparently, tried to run and got himself injured and kicked out of the program. Heâs damn hard to deal with if you value silence but heâll shut up eventually if you donât give him an inch to work with. But if you want âem theyâre yours. Not that I think youâd refuse and sour things with this supplier but⌠itâs your call.â
Emile sighed. âIâll put down his need for extra training, and make sure heâs secured well enough. You guys need anything else?â
âNah, we had our fun before we got here. You guys have a good night.â
Payment was made and hoods came off and Brandon and Emile surveyed them, considering who to start with. The quiet female one trembled a lot but went wherever they told her. Brandon had his fold out table with the hole for the head and they barely had to strap her down.
âCome on Kit, snap to it.â
âSir⌠my arms?â He couldnât do shit with his arms still bound, though he honestly thought he might prefer that.
âHurry up then, turn around.â
He rolled his neck and chivied the second pet into the corner and pushed him to his knees. âJust wait, okay? It wonât be too long.â The young boy looked up like he might make some retort but his eyes caught on Kitâs collar and he just nodded with sympathy in his eyes.
Kit used one hand to rub soothing circles on the girls shoulder and the other brushed her long hair aside. She whimpered but didnât fight and Kit barely had to hold her down. Only official Box Boys were allowed the trademarked wrist barcodes so most other places opted to tattoo it on the back of the neck, just below where a collar would sit. It was hard to tamper with back there and the pain of having it done was just another reminder that they were owned, and controlled.
The girl shook with it, even as the pain made her sweat and heat up. Shivered like a leaf, and thatâs what Kit decided he would call her. Leaf. Pretty and plump and trembling. Even if he could never say the names out loudâ it wasnât protocol to name them before they were ownedâ it helped him remember who was who when numbers sometimes slid out of his head. It helped him recall their faces for months after they left, so he could wonder how they fared in their new lives.
The boy was harder to coral, he yelled and begged and Kit saw why he might be afraid when he noticed the burned, scarred flesh that ran down his left side from the throat to fingers, and puckered the skin of the boys left hand. Heâd been through something brutal, and survived, but no wonder he dreaded more pain.
âDammit, this will make me need to offer him at a discount. Stupid defective stock,â Emile grumbled and Kit burned with embarrassment on the boys behalf. It was never fun being classed as less desirable, and he should know.
Even with the restraints in place Kit had to help hold the boy down, pressed as hard as he could to hold him still. The boy pleaded noisily until the first touch of the needle to his skin; only small sobs left him after that.
Brandon went slowly though the process of adding the black bars while Emile input the new pets codes and details into the company records. Kit tuned out as they discussed gambling, and drinking, and then tattoos themselves. He rubbed lightly at the Petâs shoulder and wondered what he might name this one. He only jolted back to being present when he realised they were talking about him.
âAnd what about your boy here, ever think of doing something more permanent with him?â
He held very, very still as he waited for Emile to answer. He didnât dare look up in case it gave them some kind of idea, like he was invested in one outcome or another. Brandon had pierced him on plenty of occasions. Every time they teamed up to put an offer on in the store for Pet Mod Aesthetics they used Kit to demonstrate the process to any nervous pets. Theyâd sit him in the little changing room booth with the white walls and reclining chair, (so much more pristine and cleanly then the set up out back) and make a show of how easy and painless it all was. Metal in his skin, tattoos guns buzzing without ink, all so some customer or other could see how well he took it and be confident in their own pets ability to handle it.
Heâd experienced the pain over and over, was intimately familiar with it, but it had never been permanent. Always, without fail, the piercings came out afterwards and he was allowed to heal, and the site where the empty tattoo gun had scratched him was left ink free. It felt like being able to breathe again, when they were gone. He remained unmarked, as fresh as the day he was bought and it felt right. It was how heâd always been and he didnât want it to change.Â
âMm, I have had some ideas, but I canât settle on anything. And you know I like to keep him looking clean for the customers to see.â
âWell unless you plan to start parading him around naked thereâs a lot of canvas we can work with if you ever change your mind. Plenty of places you could mark him up and itâd be real private.â
Kit swallowed and shuddered slightly. His fingers gripped tighter on the pets head momentarily before he remembered it might hurt. He flicked his eyes up and met Brandonâs sly grin, dread curled up from his feet like a strangling vine. Brandon looked far too pleased at the idea.
âHeâs already got those scars anyway, you could make a real feature of his face with some metal as well, draw the eye around like a work of art.â
Kit wiggled his nose to feel the pull of scarred skin under his nostril that ran over his top lip. He curled his bare toes on the concrete to feel grounded. He didnât like thinking about his scars. His defects.
âYouâd be the one to know, I donât have an eye for these things. I just keep thinking it would be funny to put a cat on him.â
Brandon laughed, pausing in his work so he didnât mess it up. âRight yeah, âcause of the name. Thatâs so dumb it might actually be hilarious.â
Kit looked up to see Emile abashed and disappointed, and had to hide a smirk of his own.Â
âLittle Kitty, youâd purr real nice if we told you to, wouldnât you?â Brandon asked leaning in to nudge his chin with a knuckle.
Kit nodded woodenly, all amusement gone in a cold flash. Heâd be good, he always was, but he had no desire to find out what Brandon thought might make him purr.
