Ben & Jerry’s are a large, multi-national corporation owned by Unilever, who dominate the entire global ice cream market to the tune of 8 billion dollars. Ben & Jerry’s is their ‘progressive’ brand and Magnum scoops up everyone else.
Ben and Jerry’s pay minimum wage in most places, and most of their profit is gained from exploiting workers and animals while selling an extremely unsustainable product. Corporations don’t have values, they have a “brand identity”. If you’re nodding along to literal adverts and spreading their PR for free, that just means that you’re their target audience.

One of the most important ways of thinking in the fat liberation movement is that food isn't moral. By affirming that, fat people break out of the idea that their choices of food are to blame or to praise, and can simply exist and eat freely without judgment or guilt. Fatphobia is so intrinsically connected with too many issues that make fat people's lives difficult, so I had a question on my mind that's hard to ignore - since the animal liberation movement states that food does instead have moral value, what do you do with this collision of ideas in two different liberation movements?
There is no easy way to reconcile this, but I think that’s because the idea that food is entirely amoral is just fundamentally flawed. We have to eat, and there is nothing intrinsically more or less moral about choosing to eat healthy or unhealthy foods. The only person who is impacted by that is you. We all have a right to bodily autonomy, that only becomes a problem when your bodily autonomy takes away someone else's - farmed animals, for example.
The idea that anything you buy (so long as you're eating it) is inherently amoral is so ludicrous that I don't even think I need to spell out what absurdities that logic would lead us to. The idea that food, alone among all our consumer purchases is completely devoid of any ethical responsibility is self-serving nonsense that directly plays into corporate propaganda. There is absolutely no reason why food, alone among all sensory pleasures, should not be subject to moral judgements.
Essentially, what you eat is your business, who you eat is everyone's business. My freedom to eat whatever I want is real, but that doesn't extend to taking away the rights and lives of other beings for me to exercise that right. I understand that this is a really useful and impactful way for people to reframe their thinking around food, but there is just no way to logically argue that food does not have a moral dimension. I think the focus for should be that personal health is amoral, not that food is amoral.
The act of eating healthy or unhealthy food and the impact that has on our own bodies and health is amoral - it is no one's business but our own. However, the choices we make about what we eat, about its environmental impact and impact on other beings, absolutely should be subject to moral decision-making. If it isn't, then we can justify eating literally anything, regardless of the amount of harm it causes.
