I CAN FIX HIM (NO REALLY I CAN)
masterlist | rules
❝ Can you please writhe a one shot with Jason and daughter of Psyche reader based on the song “I can fix him(no really i can)” by Taylor?Like imagine some time later when Jason is finally free from his demigod duties and goes to college with his friends, here he meets reader.Since she is a daughter of Psyche (the goddess of the human soul)she understands him immediately and she help him understand himself, discovering what he likes and to heal from his past and of course they fall in love. ❞ — anon
in which they shook their heads saying “god help her,” when you tell ‘em he’s your man
pairing jason grace x psyche!reader
warnings feelings of self loathing, slight bullying
on the radio . . . i can fix him (no really i can) (taylor swift)
an they r in new rome uni in this !! i feel like jason is a tad ooc but also its 11:30pm as im posting this and im tired
Everything you heard about Jason Grace screamed ‘red flag’. Son of Jupiter, ex-praetor, raised by wolves then sent to camp at the mere age of three or four - what was there not to be afraid of? To add to that, the way he carried himself exuded power in a way that would make anyone cower in fear. His face was inscrutable, crystal blue eyes unreadable in the same way the storms his father made were
However, you weren’t anyone. Your mother was Psyche, goddess of the soul. And as a daughter of Psyche, you could see right through just about everyone, including Jason Grace. Whenever you tapped into his energy, you couldn’t help but feel he was the complete opposite of what he presented himself as. While Jason seemed content with solitude to everyone around him, you knew that deep down, he was just seriously misunderstood and in desperate need for some loving
You were right. Jason’s life had been hell, especially the past couple years. His memory had been taken away from him, making him lose ties with all his friends and a potential lover, Reyna. Then, he’d gotten a new girlfriend and new friends, only for his girlfriend to dump him and his friends to all be too busy to spend a single second with him. Still, Jason had persevered. He applied and got accepted to New Rome University, he attended all his lectures, he got perfect grades, he tried his best to socialise.
The latter never worked out though. People either saw him as Jason the traitor, the guy who’d chosen to leave with the Greeks instead of fighting for his camp (Jason would stifle a laugh at the phrase ‘his camp’ - if this were really his camp, they wouldn’t have easily found a guy who’s the epitome of everything un-Roman to replace him. They weren’t any better), or as Jason the soldier, the man who’d toppled Kronos’ throne and won in a fight against the titan Krios, absolutely untouchable and worshipped in a way that would make his father seethe with jealousy
Eventually, he gave up. If that’s how they wanted him to be, so be it. He shut himself off from the world, focusing solely on his studies and his plans for shrines for every God and Goddess. Little did he know, a certain someone was formulating the perfect plan to become his friend
Your plan backfired. You’d spent weeks keeping note of all the classes you had with Jason, even occasionally following him to see where he’d go after class (his dorm, immediately), and yet you couldn’t seem to get a single conversation out of him. The closest you’d gotten was when you sat next to him in one of your lectures and dropped your pen - he’d simply handed it to you without a word. For the split-second your fingers brushed, you took on all his pain and felt it pull you apart. How could he cope with all of this baggage?
Luckily for you, the fates work in mysterious ways that in this case, happened to be in your favour
“Oh, I’ll leave. Sorry.” Someone mumbled from behind you. You had been having a hard time sleeping as it was exam season, meaning everyone’s late night stress as they did last minute cram sessions piled onto you, so you decided to go to the one place you knew would be quiet. It was a small garden you’d discovered as a freshman and dubbed as ‘your spot’, and you’d often come when you were feeling extra overwhelmed
Turning your head, your eyes widened as you saw none other than Jason Grace, who was about to go back to his dorm
“No, wait! You can stay, I don’t mind,” this was a first for Jason. Usually, people would go the other way at the sight of him, not offer to let him sit with them. He felt a gut-wrenching, yearning feeling in his stomach, and you felt it too. Softly, you patted the spot on the bench next to you. It was quiet between you, but with that simple gesture, you had made an everlasting mark in Jason’s mind
After that night, instead of leaving his bag on the seat next to him, Jason would put it on the floor in hopes that you’d see the empty seat and choose to sit there. You, ever the empath, did. The more you sat with Jason, the more words were said between you. You started the conversations, of course, asking him about his day and telling him about whatever minor inconvenience you had that morning
“I ran out of toothpaste,” Jason had said to you one day as you took your laptop out of your bag. This was his first time initiating a conversation. He wasn't sure why he did it, and cringed internally the moment those words came out of his mouth - toothpaste, Jason, really? - but you’d smiled and asked if he wanted to come with you to the shops after class, since you also needed to stock up on some supplies
That was the day Jason’s walls began crumbling down. Suddenly, he seemed to loosen up. His posture slackened and he smiled more often, told more jokes and even engaged in your banter. People gave the two of you weird looks as you walked around New Rome in fits of laughter, but neither of you cared
Well, not until one fateful day. Jason had been making his way to class with two coffees in hand, one for you and one for himself, when he’d overheard two people deep in conversation. He’d never been one to eavesdrop, but when he heard your name being mentioned, he couldn’t help himself
“That poor girl, she has absolutely no idea what she’s getting herself into,” one of them said. The other hummed in agreement, pity laced in his voice
“She thinks she’s doing a good thing, being friends with him and all, but he’s just going to break her heart like he did Reyna’s. Jason Grace is no good.”
He nearly dropped his coffees. Suddenly, all the confidence he’d built came crumbling down, being quickly replaced with those walls he knew all too well, the only things he could trust other than you. Since he loved you so dearly, this was for the best. You’d find some other guy to befriend eventually. If all of Camp Jupiter could replace him after years of service, who’s to say you couldn’t after a couple months of being friends?
Coincidentally, you happened to be looking for Jason when you saw him standing there, a blank look on his face - the same one people had warned you about in your first year at NRU. This time, however, they didn’t have a fighting chance in fooling you. Even without your powers from being Psyche’s daughter, you knew Jason was a sweet guy with the kindest heart
“Jason, are you alright?” You asked, reaching to place a tender hand on his shoulder. He pulled away and your face dropped as you tuned into his feelings and realised the old Jason was making a comeback. It’s not like he’d ever been gone, no one ever gets rid of lifelong trauma and horrible experiences that quickly, but Jason’s aura hadn’t felt that self-loathing in a very long time
Looking behind you, you saw a couple give you a pitying look and the pieces clicked immediately. Scowling at them, you took Jason by the arm and dragged him to that garden where you first spoke. The garden that was no longer just your spot
“Whatever they said, I don’t care,” you told him, “they’re wrong, Jason. You can’t listen to them. From the moment I met you I knew they were wrong. Don’t let them win.” His eyes stared into yours, completely emotionless. His guard was up, and you didn’t know why (slight btd ref!!). Didn’t he trust you?
His voice monotone, Jason replied, “this isn’t just about them, Y/N. You have no idea what I’ve been through. You don’t deserve to have to deal with that, it could affect you too. You could be making so many friends right now and yet you haven’t, because you chose to stick with me.”
The tension rose between you and you knew there was only one thing you could do: succumb to the pull he had on you once and for all. Grabbing him by the collar, you pulled Jason closer to you and kissed him fiercely
When you pulled away, you took a second to take in Jason’s dishevelled look before replying, “I don’t care. I’ll choose to stick with you in every lifetime.”

Happy Doing Taxes With You
Rating: General CW: None apply! Tags: Established Relationship, Married Steve Harrington/Eddie Munson, Domestic Fluff, Tooth-rotting Fluff, Dialogue Light, Doing Mundane Things With One Another
For the @steddielovemonth prompt: "Love is being able to exist together comfortably, sitting side by side and doing your own thing."
💕—————💕
Sundays were for work and complete and utter silence in their house. Now, it wasn’t for big errands like going to the bank or out grocery shopping or any of that nonsense. It was the small things. Things that could be completed over time, if necessary, but were still manageable enough that they could be done in a day or so. This was the day for house chores: laundry, mopping, vacuuming, meal prep. It was a day for: returning their DVD rentals, getting a quick tire pressure check, going through the car wash. It was another simple day of: sit in silence and bask in each other’s easy glow.
During tax season, though, Sundays were for paperwork. Checkbook balancing, getting their receipts in order, finalizing the songwriting (in Eddie’s case), editing that week’s lesson plan (in Steve’s).
This particular Sunday morning, the tax season of 2012, it was for genuine tax paperwork. Collecting W-2s and miscellaneous necessary purchases, the student loan payment on Steve’s part, a car loan for Eddie. It was a coffee and bagels kind of morning. It was a sit at the dining table and let Poncho snooze peacefully on the couch, curled up in a ball, purring away the rays of sunlight beaming on him. A morning in which Steve didn’t contemplate dying his hair to cover up the white streaks or notice how dirty his everyday glasses were, where instead he sat on Eddie’s right, eighth grade exams laid out in front of him, a red pen in hand to mark off errors. One where Eddie has the tax documents, the Casio calculator the size of a small paperback book, his hair tied up (the white dispersed and gentle), his eyebrows furrowed in concentration, his tongue tucked into his bottom lip, leaning back with his reading glasses perched low on his nose, and doing all the math for the both of them.
Steve enjoyed this kind of work. The warmth in it all. Their blinds half open. The dust of their space floating through the air in a gentle gust. Pens making soft taps against the dining table as it made strokes on their respective papers.
He loved sipping noisily on his coffee every once in a while, which earned a small snort from Eddie. Loved letting his eyes drift for a moment, basking in Eddie’s careful left hand marking beautifully all the big numbers that Steve fucking hated. Even loved looking at the same test questions for hours on end, if it all meant soaking up the soft heat of Eddie’s body next to his.
Eventually, though, they both hit a wall. Eddie, because he needs a moment to stand on their back porch and look out at the backyard, as the butterflies settled on the flower garden Steve started, taking in the crisp March breeze, maybe smoking a cigarette if he felt inclined to do so—just away from the numbers that began to bleed together. Steve, well all those years twirling bats and wringing things around with his hands finally caught up to him, a bad case of carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists—and also, for the same reason, the words bled together. (There’s so much English literature that he can consume. And he’s had to read fifteen summaries on The Outsiders.)
So, they take their warm, room temp coffees. A fresh onion bagel from the toaster, smothered in cream cheese and some slightly bitter beet jam (Steve’s own specialty, he’d raised the beets like children). And they go stand outside next to each other.
Elbows on the fencing of their wraparound porch. Faces pointed towards the calmly stirring grass. Slurping noisily, again Eddie snorts, and again, Steve can’t contain his smile. Their bagels go quick. Crumbs littering the porch’s wood. Cream cheese lightly stuck to the corners of their mouths, tongues darting out like party noisemakers.
Eddie takes Steve’s left hand and squeezes. The wedding band on Steve’s finger clinking against Eddie’s old, well loved mood ring that can only show one color:
Pink.
Steve squeezes back with passion. Knowing that, in about fifteen or twenty or forty minutes, they’ll go back inside and sit back down at the dining table, noses to their paperwork, ruminating on numbers and words. Steve’ll run out of papers to grade, he’ll rub a palm down Eddie’s back, stirring him gently. He’ll kiss Eddie’s cheek, his rough stubble itching at Steve’s chapstick softened lips. They’ll discuss: “Tilapia and couscous? Or should we celebrate being done with our work?” Steve knows he won’t be frying up fish. “Pizza and beer and Golden Girls?” Eddie will ask.
He won’t be able to say no, Steve knows that. He finds it easier to comply with Eddie. To go along with it. After all, doing taxes and house work and discussing dinners, four years wedded but married since 1995—being together since 1986—Steve knows his life is nothing but flat plains and lavender. No more monsters. No more bloodshed. Just simple things.
Like leaning into Eddie’s side, their hands still joined, coffee cups empty, breath mingling as cream cheese and onion bagels. Looking out on their backyard. Standing on the wraparound porch that Eddie promised. In the glow of midday sunlight and one another.
“Love you,” Steve whispers, voice hesitant to break the quiet.
“I love you, too,” Eddie promises just as soft.
💕—————💕 I realized the other day that like all of my steddielovemonth works can be read in such a way that you follow Steve and Eddie from before they got together to when they got married. So, I guess this kind of a married Steve and Eddie AU now, too.

Hi! Can you please do BTS members headcanons where their SO who used to be academically gifted, suddenly starts flunking exams because of the work load which they can't cut down and is now afraid of giving exams? (was that highly specific? well.... I really shouldn't hassle you with so many academia based requests but tis the season of exams so
as always, thank you so much for doing these reactions! Tata!)
BTS helping their overworked partner during exam season.
{A/N; Hello Anon, you sent this in a week or two ago, I hope you're not feeling as overwhelmed. I also have had a lot of work for school lately that's been time consuming (luckily Tumblr lets you do scheduled posts lol) Hope you enjoy this! And to anyone reading this, I hope your exams or whatever you have going on in your life gets better soon!}
*No gifs sorrrrrrry*
Prompt-
*Reader is dating a member of BTS, and the reader had always been a really academically gifted person. Aced every exam, on top of things all of the time. But things have recently gotten too overwhelmingly and reader starts to slip in grades and studies. This is how each member would comfort their S/O*
Jin:
Jin would be very concerned about you, as he always thought of you as someone who had it all together. But one night after multiple attempts to get you to leave your desk and come sit and watch TV with him, you broke down in tears.
"I can't do it Jin, it's all too much. I can't remember everything. It's exams on everything from the semester for five different classes. How am I supposed to memorize everything?", you exclaimed, letting your head fall into your hands as you slouched forward from your seat on the couch. Jin had his arm around you, at a loss for words. He had wished you would have said something earlier. He suspected that something had been up, but like already explained, he thought you were on top of things.
"Y/n, I wish you would have told me sooner. I could've helped you.", he paused, furrowing his eyebrows as he looked into your tired eyes. "I'll help you, I'll make sure you don't overwhelm yourself okay?"
You looked up at him, sniffling and whispering a soft 'thank you'
Yoongi:
You had been avoiding Yoongi all week. The last time you had spoken to him, you explained that you had exams coming up, so he assumed you were busy with that.
But since the last day or so, you hadn't responded to any of his text messages, Yoongi got a little worried and decided to come visit your apartment.
He went to your favorite takeout place, order your favorite meal and had envisioned a night of food and watching a few movies. He thought you could use a break, and seeing you would give him some peace of mind.
So as he unlocked your apartment door with the key you had given him and stepped inside, he was surprised to see that it was completely dark inside.
He set down the bag of food on the counter and called out for you as he started to walk down the hallway toward your bedroom.
"Y/n, are you home?", he called out.
He came upon your bedroom door, that was closed. He thought that was odd. So he knocked twice before opening and stepped inside.
There he could make out your silhouette in that dark. He could hear little sniffles.
"Y/n, what's wrong?", he asked, spquinting in the dark, he waved his hands around, trying to feel for a lamp to turn on the lights.
When he did, teh first thing his eyes saw was you under the covers. Your eyes were red and puffy and textbooks were scattered on the bottom of your bed.
"Y/n, what happened? Why didn't you call me?", Yoongi asked, concern evident in his voice.
"I didn't call you because I'm embarrassed. I failed my first three exams. All of that work for nothing...", you said, sinking deeper into the comforter. "So what you failed? You'll do better next time. It doesn't take away from all of the hard work you've already done.", Yoongi explained as he tried to pull the covers away from your face so he could see you.
"No, you don't have to lie to me Yoongi", you responded, to embarrassed to face him.
"I'm not lying to you. I can't believe you got me so worried over something as dumb as a psychology exam. What's the big deal, we all have a conscience...", he joked. You couldn't help but let out a little giggle. "Ah, I made you laugh, you should've called me, I would've been of help."
Hoseok:
Hoseok was very good at reading you and noticed early on that you hated leaving to go to campus. He had also noticed that you hated looking at any of your work.
You had mentioned to him one night that you were feeling overwhelmed and that you had failed your latest final exam. You mentioned it in a nonchalant way, but Hoseok knew that it bothered you.
He had tried a few things to make you feel better. First, buying you your favorite snack on his way home from a dance practice one night. You seemed appreciative, but still like your mind was somewhere else. Next he tried taking you to a shopping district one weekend, to try and get you away from your work, but still, you seemed sad.
So finally, Hoseok just decided to ask you upfront; "Is everything okay at school?", he asked, looking up at you one night as you washed the dishes with him. He was on drying duty.
You sighed and turned the water off before looking over at him, "I can't seem to get a good grade on any of my exams. My grades are slipping and my concentration is just...nonexistent. I don't know what's happening with me", you explained as your eyes started to well up with tears.
Hoseok pulled you into a hug and kissed your forehead. "we'll figure this out", he whispered. He hated seeing you so upset.
Namjoon:
Namjoon loved helping you with your studies. He also loved learning new things from you. So when he asked about joining in on your next study session and was told that there wouldn't be one, he couldn;t help but feel a bit shocked.
"Why not? Don't you have exams coming up?", Namjoon asked, a little concerned in the change in behavior.
"Joon, I really don't want to talk about it", and just like that, the subject was dropped. Or so you thought.
The next day when you stepped out to get a coffee with a friend, Namjoon was left home alone and started sleuthing.
He first looked at you desk and found nothing, so he moved on to your school bag. He opened up you organizer and there it was.
Your English exam and a big fat F.
That's why she doesn't want to study, Namjoon thought to himself.
So when you got home from your coffee date, you were immediately confronted by Namjoon.
There he was, right in front of the door, holding the paper that had made you lose all of your confidence.
"Namjoon, how dare you go through my stuff!", you yelled, trying to grab the paper from him. But he was too fast for you and held it over your head.
"No, how dare YOU not tell me, I could've helped you", Namjoon said, sounding a little hurt. "What, did you think I was going to make fun of you or something?", he asked.
"No, but no one wants to admit that they've failed", you said, looking down at your shoes.
"You didn't fail, you had a slip up. You've been working yourself too hard. Let me help you.", Namjoon said, pulling you into a warm hug.
Jimin:
Jimin had become concerned when you started to find excuses to get out of seeing him.
He loved spending time with you, bit he noticed that you had been acting very weird lately.
he knew it was exam season for you, and respected your need for space, but when he had spontaneously dropped in on you and noticed the bags under your eyes, he became worried.
"Y/n...are you sure you're okay?", Jimin asked you.
"Yes, I have to go Jimin, thanks for stopping by", you said as you tried to escort him towards the front door.
"What's really going on Y/n? You've been acting weird for the past few weeks and you're making me feel worried about you. I want to help you", Jimin said.
You stared at him for a few seconds, debating on if you should just come clean. In the end he won.
You led him over to the couch and immediately fell into his embrace. "It's all a mess Jimin. I'm failing my exams. I can't study, my focus is gone."
Jimin frowned, he hated seeing you so upset.
'Y/n, I think you need a break, let's go out and eat", he said, pulling you up and hoping to get your mind off of things.
Taehyung:
Like Yoongi and Jimin, Taehyng would want to give you your space at first, but would catch on pretty fast.
He had visited your apartment and had noticed that all of your textbooks looked like they hadn't even been cracked open yet.
So, he confronted you pretty fast, but not in a accusatory way. He brought it up as an observation.
"Your textbooks look like they haven't been opened at all...", he said offhandedly as he sat on the couch with you.
"Oh, you know, they're...uh...pretty new", you said. Taehyung could detect some hints of nervousness in your voice and he couldn;t help but wonder about what you weren't telling him. So Taehyung started to pry for answers.
"Is school okay?", Taehyung asked.
"Ugh, okay fine, no, no it's not", easier than he thought this would be, he thought to himself.
"Why didn't you tell me?", he asked.
"Because, you have your own problems and I didn't want to burden you."
"You could never burden me. I'm always here for you."
Jungkook:
Jungkook would be the slowest to realize that anything is wrong.
He would just assume that everything was okay because you never really mentioned school.
But one day over the phone, when he finally did ask about your finals, specifically when your last one was, you broke down in tears.
Now this was really confusing to him, because he thought he said something wrong.
It wasn't until you had explained to him that you actually had to retake a few because you failed them that he finally understood why you were crying.
"It's okay, I know you had been struggling with that class", he tried to console you.
"No, no it's not okay. I worked so hard, and for what, a sympathy grade?", you continued to cry.
"That's it, I'm coming over", Jungkook said, knowing that he needed to be with you in person.

Further Along the Way - Chapter Eighteen
Tumblr media
Summary: The Founders’ Ball. Just some fluff as we near the end of the story.
Rating: PG
There were only a few weeks of the school year left. Din was busy evaluating the first and second year students in anticipation of giving out their final grades; he’d already told the third and fourth year students that as far as he was concerned, they had passed their final exam during their mission and they were all getting an “A” for the course.
It was just as well, for most of the older students were more interested in planning for the Founders’ Ball than in preparing for their exams. The formal dance was held every year just before the final week of school, and was the highlight of the cadets’ social season. It seemed that everyone was going, and a good percentage of the conversations on campus were about who was taking who, who was wearing what, and where everyone was going afterward.
“Why is it such a big deal?” Din asked Mariana one night. “I’d think they’d be more concerned about their exams, especially the fourth years who are about to graduate.”
“Most schools have some sort of rite of passage like this,” she explained. “At my school, it was the Winter Festival. We lived on a northern continent and the planet had a pretty pronounced axial tilt, so the solstices were a big deal. The dance was held right before school let out for the midwinter break, which was also when we had midterm exams. All of the senior year teachers knew there was no point in expecting their students to concentrate on anything at that point.”
“But that still doesn’t explain why the dance is so important,” Din said. “It has nothing to do with their grades.”
Mariana laughed gently. “It’s a celebration,” she said. “Especially for the ones who are graduating. Most of them are never going to see each other again once they leave the academy. It’s a last chance to be with their friends before they all move on to the next phase of their lives.”
**************************
“Are you going to the Ball?” Tress asked, once Ad’ika and the girls had settled down to play in the bedroom. Now that Cabur was a bit older, Mariana took the boys for a walk down to the Mondella’s house every few days for a play date.
“Oh, no,” Mariana said. She settled Cabur in a little nest on the couch where they could keep an eye on him while they chatted, and picked up the cup of rejon tea Tress had brewed for her. It was a light, floral drink that she’d become quite fond of since coming to Thantos Prime. “Cabur’s still too little to leave for that long, and besides, I don’t think Din knows how to dance.” She laughed. “Not that I’m that great a dancer myself.”
“I think you should,” Tress said, taking a sip of her own tea. “I’d be glad to watch Cabur, and it would only be a few hours. You deserve a night out.”
Mariana shook her head. “No, it’s fine. Besides, aren’t you and Garrick going? You deserve a night out, too.”
“We’ve been before,” Tress said. “And if you and Din go, it’s a poke in the eye for the Shandilons.” She smirked. “Just think of the look on her face if you dance with the Colonel.”
Mariana laughed. “Well, there is that,” she admitted. “But I don’t think Din would go for it. He’s still trying to figure out why the dance is even taking place. Fancy balls aren’t exactly a part of Mandalorian culture.”
They sipped their tea and gossiped about some of the other staff members and their families. Nothing too vicious; mostly just Tress continuing to explain the tangled relationships amongst the tight knit Academy community. Mariana knew Tress told her friends bits and pieces about her and Din, too, so she didn’t feel too bad about being a bit nosy.
Cabur woke up and demanded food. Mariana nursed him while Tress checked on the others, who had gotten suspiciously quiet. She came out of the bedroom a few minutes later with Ad’ika in her arms, his face painted with some of her makeup and several bows tied around his ears. The girls trailed behind her, looking only slightly abashed.
“‘Dika’s pretty now,” Becca said softly.
“Very pretty,” Mariana said. “But I don’t think your mama gave you permission to use her things.”
The girls looked up at Tress sadly. “No, she didn’t,” Lina admitted. Felice just shook her head and stared at her feet.
“Well, how about you girls help me clean him up while Mrs. Djarin finishes feeding Cabur,” Tress said. “And then I think she needs to take the boys home.”
“Aw, no,” the girls whined. “We want to play some more!”
“Their daddy will be home soon, and so will yours,” Tress said.
“Okay,” Lina said sadly. The girls followed her into the ‘fresher and soon Mariana heard their giggles and squeals as they washed Ad’ika’s face. By the time Cabur was full and she’d burped him, Ad’ika returned, damp and smiling, and the girls were laughing again.
********************************
“Oh, come on, Mr. Djarin,” Pando pleaded. “You have to go to the ball.”
“I don’t dance,” Din said simply. “And the baby is too small to leave. Maybe next year.”
“I don’t know how to dance, either,” Pando said. “Neither does Klaarmat or half the other guys.” He hopped up on the table, his legs swinging. By now, it was almost impossible to tell which leg was real and which was artificial.
“I don’t think Mariana will want to go,” Din tried.
“Girls always want to go to dances,” Pando said. “Just ask her.”
“Our babysitter is Mrs. Mondella,” Din was grasping at straws now. “She might not be available. I haven’t asked the lieutenant if they’re going to the ball.”
“But if they aren’t, and she can babysit, and your wife wants to go, will you come? Please?”
Din sighed. “I’ll ask,” he said. “That’s all I can promise.” He wasn’t sure why the cadet was so insistent that Din attend the ball, but since he sincerely doubted that Mariana would want to leave Cabur that long, it wouldn’t hurt to ask her. When she said no, he could honestly tell Pando that he couldn’t go.
“Thanks, sir,” Pando said, jumping down off the table. “I’m kind of nervous about going with Glenna, and it’ll help if you’re there.” Ah, so that’s it, Din thought.
Over dinner that night, Din broached the subject with Mariana. “Pando Florenz wanted to know if we were going to the Founders’ Ball,” he said. “I told him I didn’t think so, but he made me promise to ask you if you wanted to go.”
“That’s funny,” she said. “Tress was trying to talk me into going this afternoon. She offered to watch the boys, but I told her I didn’t think you’d want to go.” She tilted her head to one side. “Do you?”
“Not really,” Din admitted. “I’m a little bit curious, but … I’ve never been to a dance before. It would be awkward.”
Mariana nodded. “Yes, it would,” she said. “I’m not much of a dancer, either. You know how clumsy I am.”
“Mmm-hmm,” he agreed. “And you’ve never left Cabur for that long.”
“I’d have to make sure to feed him right before we left, and probably leave some milk for Tress. And he’s never used a bottle, so that would be hard for her,” she said.
“And you’d have to get a fancy dress,” Din said. “And I’d have to get a new suit.”
“Yeah, it’s too much trouble,” she said. “Maybe next year?”
“That’s what I told Pando,” Din said. “Next year.”
Mariana reached out and laid her hand on his. “You want to go, don’t you?,” she asked softly.
“Yeah, I do,” Din admitted. “So do you.”
“Yeah, it would be nice to have a real date for once, wouldn’t it?” She smiled. “Get dressed up, just the two of us …”
“We’re going to the Founders’ Ball, aren’t we?”
She nodded. “Yes, I think we are.”
***************************
Mariana adjusted the neckline of her gown. It was a deep burgundy color, nipped at the waist and flaring down to almost reach the ground. It would drag on the floor if she didn’t have heels on, which made her slightly unsteady. Why are women always expected to wear high heels, she thought to herself. I’d like to see men try to walk around and dance in these ridiculous things. Still, she had to admit that there was something to be said for the look, as she twirled around in front of the mirror. Tress had left the girls with her sister-in-law, much to their consternation, and had come over to not only watch the boys but to help Mariana get ready. With her help, Mariana now looked like someone off the HoloNet gossip shows. Hair up in a fancy braided style, makeup on, borrowed jewelry sparkling at her throat and ears … she laughed.
“What’s so funny?” Tress asked.
“I don’t look like me,” Mariana admitted.
Tress tilted her head. “Yes, you do, just more so than usual,” she concluded. “And Din is going to love it.” She winked.
Mariana blushed. “I hope so,” she said. “I didn’t think he really cared that much about the dance, but once we decided to go … I swear, he’s been talking about it as much as the students have.”
“I know,” Tress said, tucking a stray strand of hair back into its braid. “Garrick said he’s been driving him nuts, asking a million questions. Has he really never been to anything like this before?”
Mariana nodded. “So, am I ready?”
“Yes,” Tress said firmly. “Go have fun with your man. The boys and I will be fine.” She gave Mariana a hug. “Enjoy.”
Mariana left the bedroom. Din was already dressed, of course. Men have it so easy, she thought. His suit was dark grey, very conservative in cut but the waistcoat he wore underneath was a brilliant sapphire blue. When he turned to face her, it took her breath away.
“Wow,” she said. “You clean up nicely.”
He looked her up and down, his eyes shining. “So do you, cyar’ika,” he said. He held out his hand. “Shall we go?”
They walked the short distance to the campus. It was a bit chilly, and Din put his arm around her shoulders. “I’m nervous,” he whispered when they reached the dining hall, which had been transformed into a ballroom for the event.
“Me, too,” she admitted. “It’s been a long time since I’ve been to one of these.” He kissed her temple before opening the doors. The room was dazzling with lights, reflecting off the glassware and the jewels and the rhinestones scattered across many of the girls’ dresses. A small orchestra played sedate dance music that could just be heard over the buzz and hum of conversation. Waitstaff circulated with trays of drinks and food, while clumps of cadets gathered around the edges of the dance floor, wanting to dance but hesitant to be the first ones to take the plunge. It was overwhelming but in the nicest way.
“Ready?” Mariana whispered.
“As I’ll ever be,” Din replied. They stepped into the fray.
“Mr. Djarin!” It was Pando, with Glenna at his side. “You made it! Wow, Mrs. Djarin, you look amazing!” His eyes were wide and he looked a bit flushed; Mariana had the impression that he’d already had a drink or two.
“That dress is beautiful,” Glenna chimed in. Her own dress was dark green, with a scattering of silver embroidered flowers and a plunging neckline that quite frankly, Mariana was surprised to see on the normally prim and proper girl.
“So is yours,” she replied. Glenna giggled and gave a little twirl to show it off. They’ve definitely had a drink or two, Mariana thought. She pulled Glenna aside for a moment. “Pace yourselves,” she whispered. “The night is young.”
“Huh?” Glenna said.
“Don’t drink too much too early,” Mariana said with a wink.
Glenna blushed. “How could you tell?” Technically, the third year students were too young to drink alcohol legally according to the laws of Clarvos City, but no one seemed to be paying much attention to that statute tonight.
Mariana simply laughed. “I’m not judging,” she said. “Just … don’t overdo it, okay?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Glenna replied. She leaned over to whisper (loudly) in Pando’s ear. “Hear that? No getting drunk. Mom said.”
Pando gave Mariana an offended look. “I would never, Mrs. Djarin,” he said. “I’m a fine, upstanding cadet with a promising future.”
Din raised an eyebrow and they all dissolved into laughter. “Yeah, didn’t think I could say that with a straight face,” Pando admitted. “But we’ll be careful. Promise.”
The pair wandered off and Mariana nudged Din with her elbow. “Go on, you can have one,” she said, as a waiter walked by with a tray of frosted glasses. “Just because I can’t doesn’t mean you have to abstain as well.”
Din plucked a glass from the tray. “Just one,” he said. “If you’re expecting me to dance, I’ll need the false courage.”
They circulated around the room, nibbling on appetizers and chatting with students and staff. Mariana even managed to find an non-alcoholic punch that was quite tasty (the first one she tried was sickeningly sweet and made her teeth ache, the second one looked and smelled like swamp water). They had made their way almost halfway around the room when Klaarmat approached.
“Hi, Mr. Djarin, Mrs. Djarin,” he said brightly. He wore a cream colored suit that went well with his green skin tone. Still, he stuck out like a sore thumb amidst the darker suits and dresses of the others, and Mariana couldn’t help but notice that he seemed to be attending the dance alone.
“How are you, Klaarmat?,” she asked. “Having fun?”
He shrugged. “Does anyone really have fun at these things?” He laughed quietly. “Actually, yeah, I am having a good time, considering. Kind of weird to think that in a week, we’ll all be graduated, off to start our careers.” He straightened his shoulders. “I’m being posted to Rentrock.”
Din smiled. “Congratulations,” he said. Turning to Mariana, he explained. “Rentrock is the high command center; only the best and brightest get posted there.”
“I think it’s just because I got hurt so bad,” Klaarmat said. “They feel sorry for me.”
“That’s not true,” Mariana said. “And I think news like that deserves to be celebrated. Would you like to dance, Klaarmat?”
“What? Me?” He looked flabbergasted. “Oh, no, Mrs. Djarin, I’m fine.”
“Well, I’m not,” she insisted. “I may be clumsy but at least I’m not afraid to dance in front of others, unlike some people.” She looked pointedly at Din, who shrugged.
“I never learned how,” he protested.
“Then watch, and learn,” Mariana said, taking Klaarmat by the hand and leading him onto the dance floor despite the boy’s protests. “It’s okay,” she said softly. “I just want to show him that the floor isn’t going to open up and swallow us if we can’t dance well.”
“Um, okay, Mrs. Djarin,” Klaarmat said as he gingerly laid one hand on her shoulder.
“You can call me Mariana,” she said as they took a tentative twirl across the floor. “We’re friends, aren’t we?”
“Yeah, I guess we are,” he said, as they joined the throng of couples. Mariana knew she was getting some dirty looks for dancing with the Bendaski, but she didn’t care. He was one of Din’s best students, she liked him, and the look on Brisenda Shandilon’s face when they waltzed past her was worth a thousand credits.
When they finished their dance, Klaarmat walked her back to where Din was waiting. “Your turn, sir,” he said with a smirk. “She only stepped on my feet once.”
Mariana swatted at him, but his Bendaski reflexes once again came into play and he easily dodged her hand.
Din took a deep breath and caught her hand. “All right, I’m ready. Let’s do this.” He led her out onto the dance floor and soon the rest of the crowd was forgotten. One hand nestled snugly at her waist, holding her close while the fingers of his other hand intertwined with hers. She let the hand on his shoulder drift up to cup the back of his neck, sliding up into his hair now and then.
“I kind of like dancing,” he murmured.
“I thought you might,” she replied. The hand on her hip was sliding down just a bit, getting dangerously into territory that was not appropriate for a public occasion. She cleared her throat and gently moved it back to a safer position. Din blushed and stepped on her toes, which caused her to burst into laughter.
“Ha! You’re as bad as me,” she teased. He made a face, then darted in for a quick kiss. “Stop it,” she hissed. “People will see.”
“Let them see,” he said softly. “Let them see how much I love my wife.” He pressed his forehead against hers and they swayed gently to the music until the song ended.
*************************
By the end of the night, Din had danced with Colonel Braxden’s wife (which was only proper; the Colonel had danced with Mariana so Din had to return the favor) and Sergeant Honnal (she had surprised him by politely asking Mariana if she could cut in; Mariana had surprised him even more by graciously letting her), but he found that he really only enjoyed dancing with his cyar’ika. As they walked home, his feet were sore (she’d more than evened the score by stepping on his feet three times over the course of the evening) but he was happy.
“That was quite an experience,” he said as they approached their apartment.
“It was technically our first real date,” she said, with a laugh. “We certainly do things backwards, don’t we? Got a kid first, then hooked up, got pregnant, then got married, had a baby, then went on a date.”
“Well, technically, I think we were married when Cabur was conceived, we just didn’t know it yet,” Din said. “But we definitely aren’t conventional, are we?”
“Wouldn’t have it any other way, cyar’ika,” she said.

Efficient Misery
(This column is posted at www.StevenSavage.com, Steve's Tumblr, and Pillowfort.  Find out more at my newsletter, and all my social media at my linktr.ee)
Note: You’re going to see a switch in how I do my blog posts.  I’m trying a more personal voice, and writing on broader subjects, ala my past hero Dave Barry.  It can’t all be about writing!
I really like organizing things.  I get paid for it.  I’m honestly pretty good about it, which can be a really bad thing sometimes.
So, ‘tis the season for medical stuff.  I’ve got vaccines (at least two). I’ve got the regular tests and checkups a man of fifty five has to ensure my body and I work in tandem.  Some of those tests involve fasting and/or various forms of personal violation.  Gotta pace that stuff to keep the rate of indignity to a tolerable level.
I also have some in-office things coming up at work.  My workplace is pretty remote in the work-at-home not emotional-distance way, but once or twice a year we get together so we can remark how we all look different on Zoom.  Gotta work around that too!
So my brilliant idea was to pace myself.  A vaccination one week, then one the week after, since the last time I did flu and covid shots together I felt like I’d slammed a bottle of rum but without the convenience of being too blacked out to know how bad I felt.  Do my exams after the last exam because hey a little fasting won’t hurt after that.  Then right into the all-hands!  Nice and convenient and nothing piles up!
Know what, my highly organized plan had one flaw - it meant four weeks where life was intermittently punctuated with low-grade misery.
Sure, the effects of one vaccine wore off in two days, just in time for me to get going to have another vaccination.  Then fasting, which is somehow less fun after two weeks of dealing with vaccine side effects!  Then regular exams that I scheduled in What-Was-I-Thinking-O’Clock in the morning.  Then getting up at the same time days later to drive through Bay Area traffic for days.
I achieved that experience many a Project Manager knows all too well, succeeding in a way that also makes you entirely unhappy.
Well, at least it’s almost over.  So now time to gear up for the last stage of waking up early and whatever.  But next time, maybe I’ll take my discomfort and misery in a  more condensed form.

Firsts with Sakusa Kiyoomi
A collections of firsts with Sakusa Kiyoomi
A/N:
I’ve had the idea of this story in my drafts forever now, but I sat down yesterday and finally brought it to life! I have never wrote for Sakusa before, but I hope that you guys enjoy my personification of him!
word count: 7.2k!
warnings: vomiting, nsfw content that will be italicized, swearing?
Please interact with this story! I’m restarting my blog back up and I lost a lot of moots! Send me asks and whatnot!
The first time you saw Sakusa Kiyoomi was when he silently strolled down the hallway in elementary school. He had a blank stare at all times. Never strayed too close to any of the other children. A gloomy looking child that you did not particularly want to approach. His hands remained glued to his side and looked to be sulking. He blended into the crowd but if you paid enough attention, he barely stood out. He crossed your mind for the slightest second before you were sucked back into conversation with your friends.
-
The first time you heard his voice was when he was talking to another boy in your grade level. Who you found out was his cousin. Their interaction was quiet and somewhat dull. His cousin, Motoya, asked if he wanted to go to an after school activity with him. Sakusa nodded briefly and said “sure”. His voice was quiet and bored. You wondered as you walked past the boys what they were talking about, however, you were quickly distracted yet again and proceeded to move forward without a second thought.
-
The first interaction between the two of you was your third year of middle school. Sakusa Kiyoomi was nothing but a background character in your life. You ever so often saw him since the two of you were in different classes. However, you shared a class with Motoya so it wasn’t too rare to see the boy.
You walked out of class upon dismissal, but hung around campus with your friends, knowing that your parents were at work and it was redundant to return so early. It was an unanimous decision to go to the convenience store outside of campus to grab a quick bite with the chore money that took a few weeks to rack up.
Walking outside of the gym a volleyball rolled to your feet. You picked it up before looking to your right to see who it belonged to. Sakusa Kiyoomi walked calmly over to you with his  hands  at  his side.  There was no one else in the gym. He was playing by himself.
He came to a halt, looking at you expectedly. You fidgeted the ball in your palms before asking. “Are you practicing all alone?”  He nodded curtly with a deadpan expression that said give me the ball.
“I see.” You tossed him the ball gently before following your friends that have already walked ahead.
At the convenience store you grabbed things you thought Sakusa may have liked.
“Why are you grabbing so much? Also, I thought you didn’t like daifuku.” Aya commented as she browsed the shelf next to you. Your nose scrunched up. “I’m just craving it.” You shrugged her off. She didn’t reply as she grabbed a carton of apple juice.
All of you checked out and parted ways in front of the store. It wasn’t long before you peeked your head into the gym to see Sakusa slamming  the ball against the wall continuously. He was roughly the same height as you, but each time he struck the ball, there was an undeniable force behind it.
You took your shoes off, outside of the gym before clearing your throat nervously.
The boy caught the ball as it ricocheted off the wall. His black curls stuck messily to his forehead and he turned to you with a confused expression. Holding up the plastic bag with one hand,  you offered him a small smile.
“Looked like you were working hard, so I brought this for you.”
He blinked at you. Not a word.
“I can just leave it somewhere if you’d like. I just have to-”
“I was actually getting kind of hungry.” He said quietly. He walked to the edge of the gym and sat down. You followed his lead quietly. Upon sitting down, you opened the bag,  preparing to dump  everything on the floor before he raised a hand to stop you.
“The floor is rather dirty, I would prefer you not to do that.” He said plainly “Please.” he added. You nodded and opened the bag towards him so he could get his pick. Luckily for you he went straight for the daifuku. He meticulously unwrapped it and began to munch silently. You followed suit and you began to eat a custard-filled bread roll.
“Sakusa, right?” You turned your head to the boy. “Kyosuke?” You faltered.
He shook his head. “Kiyoomi. And you?”
“L/N F/N.” You answered. He dipped his head in acknowledgement.
“What high school are you going to try to go to?”
“Itachiyama.”
“Really? I want to go there as well. Maybe we can study together for the entrance exams together.”
“I’m going to get in on a sports recommendation since I’m on the volleyball team here.” He said nonchalantly as he flattened the snack’s wrapper on his thigh. You nodded. His curtness didn’t particularly bother you.
“Fair enough.” You brushed off your skirt and began to make an exit towards the gym. You began to slip your shoes on outside of the door before waving over to him. “Let me know if you change your mind about studying. I’m in the same class as your cousin. Keep the rest of the snacks. Work hard.”
-
Roughly two weeks later Sakusa Kiyoomi was waiting outside of class 3-B. Ignoring Motoya he approached you. “Let’s study for entrance exams.” Motoya looked at you oddly and tailed the two of you as Sakusa lead you to the library in silence.
You sat in front of the curly haired boy, pulling out your journals and folders excitedly sliding them towards Sakusa. Motoya sat beside him, earning a subtle glare from Kiyoomi.
“I looked at everything they’ve made available for students who are applying, organized it, and color coded it. I have a plan to get in.
Sakusa carefully eyed over your notes as he skimmed the pages. Your handwriting was incredibly neat. Everything was so organized that even an idiot could get into Itachiyama. Not that he was thinking that you were stupid by any means.
That was the first time you saw Sakusa smile because of you.
-
It was now your first year at Itachiyama Academy. You walked through the gates of the school sandwiched between Sakusa and Motoya. Somehow the three of you managed to be in the same class.
As the semester progressed, you began to settle in a routine with the boys. You would sit at practices, reading books. After they finished, you would all study at someone’s house and part ways.
It was dipping into the summer. Tokyo subtly rose in temperature as the rainy season commenced.
Sakusa stood outside of your home with an umbrella since he was fully aware that you refused to bring one to school any time that it rained. He looked down to his cellphone. You were always punctual so it didn’t make sense to him that you weren’t outside yet. He knocked on the front door to your family home. No answer.
He used the spare key under the plant to go inside. He propped the umbrella against the door and took his shoes off before making his way upstairs. You weren’t in your bed but he could hear someone gagging in the bathroom.
His face contorted into disgust at the thought, but proceeded towards the room. He opened the bathroom door to see you hunched over the toilet. Your hair pooled over your shoulders going forward as you choked on your own vomit. Sobs quietly echoed the room.
He cautiously moved forward and gathered your hair in his hand. He turned his head away from your body to cover his distaste for the situation that he found himself in.  You jumped startled in place before you started vomiting again.
“Sorry, I didn’t text you. I’ve been here for hours.” Your voice was incredibly weak.
“I wish you took care of yourself. Then things like this wouldn’t happen. Where are your parents?”
“I don’t know.” Your voice croaked. Sakusa flinched at that. He knew the feeling all too well.
“You know if you used an umbrella in the rain you wouldn’t get sick. Plus you’ve been pulling all nighters with school for no reason. Stop overexerting yourself.”
“Shut up.” You groaned. “Go to school. I’ll take care of myself.”
He rolled his eyes. He grabbed a hair tie from under your sink and tied your hair back to the best of his ability before leaving the room. Going downstairs he began to make hot green tea with honey, a glass of water, and cut up an apple, your favorite fruit, and grabbed a mask out of his backpack and put it on before returning to the bathroom. You were leaning against the wall, your features were flushed as beads of sweat developed along your forehead.
Sakusa sighed as he squatted in front of you.
“Drink this. Rehydrate. Put some food in your stomach.”
“Go to school Sakusa.” You muttered as you placed the cup to your lips gently.
Sakusa began washing his hands into the sink, ignoring you.
“You ought to go lie down so your body can repair itself.” He turned around before gathering the cups and the bowl of fruit from you. He placed it on your bedside table before he felt a weight collide with his back. He turned suddenly to catch your body.
“Sorry, I must be really weak right now.” A laugh barely escaped your lips. You were face to face with him as he supported you up. All he did was nod before he gently lowered you onto the bed, placing you under the sheets.
He walked over to the bathroom and found a small towel. A sigh of exasperation escaped his lips. He already had known that you were overdoing it academically, but now it finally showed physically. He didn’t understand you sometimes.
He returned to your room once more to see that you were out cold. He used the cloth to gently dab the sweat off of your face before folding it inside out and resting it on your forehead entirely. Sakusa supposed that it would be alright to skip school that day to help his friend out.
“Thanks, Kiyoomi.” The words poured quietly from your lips. His head jerked up suddenly
That was the first time you didn’t call him by his surname.
-
“Okay hear me out. Yes, you’re insanely talented at volleyball. No, I am not telling you how to play, BUT I think that if you approach the AB attack that you guys have been working on this way, I think that you can achieve it somewhat better.” You shoved your diagram that you drew out to Kiyoomi. His eyes scanned over everything. You flipped the page in front of him.
“This is the way that you’ve been doing it, but I think that with your spiking range, you wouldn’t have to exert yourself and overextend yourself from this side of the court.”
Sakusa laughed pulling your notebook closer to himself.
“This is actually genius. How did you know I couldn’t get it?”
“You’ve been spending more time practicing solo than normal so I just paid a little more attention when I’ve been able to come in and watch.”
“I really appreciate this! Do you mind?” You shook your head. “It’s all yours. I have some other ideas in there as well since nationals are coming up.”
He giddily slid it into his backpack before checking his phone.
“Shit. I didn’t realize how late it was. The subways are probably packed by now.” He groaned.
You slung your bag over your shoulder. The crowds outside were moving meticulously outside. A sigh escaped your lips. You turned to Sakusa as he hooked a mask over each ear with a gloomy expression.
The two of you walked out of the cafe and headed towards the JR line. The crowd was astonishingly hard to walk through. Well, it was easy for Saksua since he could see over the sea of people. You reached out for his sleeve and managed to grab his hand. He looked back and gave you a weary acknowledgement and continued to tread forward. You barely managed to get into the train car with him. Your fingers tangled with his as you were shoved into his side. You looked up to see his eyebrows furrowed and expression darkened.. This definitely isn’t the first time that Saksusa had been unfortunate enough to get on the trains with rush hour.
“You good, Kiyoomi?” You tugged on his arm gently as you whispered. He nodded looking down at you. A man beside you accidentally shoved you forward. Sakusa quickly laced his fingers in yours before he anchored you back to his side. You squeeze his hand gently as a quiet thanks.
In roughly ten minutes the doors opened to your stop. Sakusa led the way, weaseling the two of you outside of the train station. He let out a sigh of relief as he climbed the stairs onto the open street.
“Much better.” he mumbled. You absentmindedly followed him to his house as he continued to hold your hand.
“Kiyoomi, you know you can go ahead and let go now.” He froze in his tracks and looked down to your hands and returned his gaze to your face.
“Apologies.” He said before he let go. His hand returned to his side.
“I think I’m going to call it a night here. I’m going to Motoya’s to study the notes. I’ll text you if I have any questions.” He raised a hand to bid farewell and walked to the direction of his home.
Your eyes traveled down to the palm of your hand. You studied it. Each finger as you rotated it. With a subtle shrug, you turned to the opposite direction and made your way home.
That was the first time you held hands with Sakusa Kiyoomi.
-
“What do you mean I can’t braid your hair for a game? It’s getting longer and it would look adorable. Right, Motoya?” You twirled one of Sakusa’s curls gently in your finger. Motoya glanced up from his phone laughing.
“I don’t see why not.”
“ Don’t support her. You’re going to make her think that she’s unstoppable.” Sakusa groaned and thudded his head against the table.
“Can I do it for fun though?” You whined as your ran your hands through his hair.
He sunk in his chair in defeat. “Fine.”
You excitedly stood up and got to work.
After a few minutes you were finished. His hair was barely short enough for it to stick into a little poof in the back. You quickly took out your phone and snapped a quick selfie with your back camera. You laughed at the photo as Sakusa grabbed at it.
“I didn’t know that you were going to take a picture of me, you ass! Delete it!”
“Nah, this is too good! Kiyoomi I really think you should do this for a game! You look precious!”
You quickly ran over to the couch next to Motoya, showing him the off guard picture you got of the two of them. The two of you were in hysterics. Sakusa ran over to the couch to join the two of you. Placing an arm around your shoulder he broke into laughter as well.
Lose hair flowed on the sides of his face. His eyes squinted shut as his laughs filled the room.
“You ought to delete that picture though, seriously.”
You shook your head at him.
“This is too good. I might just send it to your whole team.”
“Don’t even think about it.”
After some time, the three of you settled down and watched a movie. You rested your head on his shoulder. His arm never left your side. The three of you passed out cold.
Motoya’s mother laughed at the view she had of the three of you as she took her shoes out of the door. Her own son was sprawled out on the end of the couch, snoring the night away. Kiyoomi’s head rested on the couch. Tufts of hair were popping out of the braid. His arms loosely wrapped around you. Your head rested against his chest and your arms rested around his stomach.
She laughed quietly to herself, leaving the kids to sleep.
This was the first time that you fell asleep on Sakusa Kiyoomi.
-
“What do you mean that you didn’t have a good time at the camp? It’s literally for the Olympics!” You had your hands on your hips as you stared at Saksua. He sulked in your kitchen chair. He came over as soon as he had gotten back from camp.
“I do not understand how Shiratorizawa lost. Kageyama Tobio wasn’t necessarily an extraordinary feat to watch-”
“You do understand that there’s a reason why he got invited there as well, right?”
“I’m trying to be realistic here.”
“Well since both schools are going to nationals, maybe you can play them in the bracket. You’re the number two ace in the country because you worked hard Kiyoomi. I don’t care if some brat from Miyagi rubbed you the wrong way. You need to get over it and do your best. You and Motoya leave in two weeks.”
The two of you had spent the last hour bickering of his experience. Sakusa had a negative thing to say about almost every player that was there.
“If I want to analyze my potential opponent then I think you should allow me to. You’re not playing on the court whatsoever so I think you should keep your opinions to yourself about this situation.”
“Kiyomi, I’m literally the one who has helped you get to where you are now. I’ve spent hours of my own freetime, even getting physically ill coming up with ways to help you and Motoya improve your skills to be better players-”
“But nobody asked you to do that.” He glared at you. You falter at what to say next.
“I did it because you two are my friends. And I want you to succeed.” Each word articulated from your mouth excruciatingly slow. As if you were questioning yourself.
“You have a lot to say for someone who has never played the game before.” Sakusa snapped at you.
“Get out.”
“What?”
“Get out of my house. You do not talk to me like that here.” You made your way to the front door, holding it open.
“Out Kiyoomi.”
“I think we’re having a little miscommunication.” He rose from his chair. He hands beared out to you as he stepped towards you cautiously.
“No. Grab your bag. Put your shoes on and leave. I understood with clarity everything you just said to me. Now I’m asking you to leave. You said everything you wanted to.”
Sakusa’s head did not hang low as your gaze pierced through him. He slung his back over his shoulder and walked towards you. His height towered over you before he bent down, slipping his shoes over his heels.
He walked out without another word.
That was the first fight you had with Sakusa Kiyoomi.
-
In the next two weeks you didn’t walk to school with the boys, you did not study with them, you did not watch practice, you didn’t use breaks at school to visit their classrooms. Anytime Motoya had reached out, you politely avoided him. If Sakusa did it was like he wasn’t even there.
Nationals were now upon the boy’s volleyball team. You followed the group solemnly to the bus.  You had signed up as an official volunteer and there wasn’t any way to necessarily get out of it since you had already been excused from the school days.
You sat alone on the bus. Far away from your two friends. The ride was short. Upon arrival, you carried the medical bag to the team’s designated area for the day.
It was a clash of teams mingling at the entrance of the arena. Not one member of the team had made it to the area yet. You turned to see Sakusa’s standing in the corner of the room. His forehead creased and his chin tucked towards his chest. There were too many people for him. Motoya was mingling with random  teams. You let out a small sigh and made your way to the designated area.
A hand gently rested on your shoulder.
“Can we talk?” Kiyoomi asked. He towered over you in height. You couldn’t see his face due to the mask, but he radiated stress. You nodded and sat next to him in the hallway.
The apology was quick, sweet, and straight to the point. You graciously accepted and it wasn’t any worry at all.
You could never truly be mad at him.
You continued to help the boy’s volleyball team until they lost the tournament.
You waited on the side of the court for the boys to come off. However, Sakusa was approached by fans and reporters.
You stood patiently on the other side of the toom. The opposing team’s captain approached you. He shyly flirted with you. Sakusa watched from afar as he continued to chat with the reporter.
This was the first time Sakusa Kiyoomi felt jealousy.
-
You, Kiyoomi, and Motoya stood side by side posing for pictures for your families. High school diplomas proudly in hand.
Kiyoomi graciously slipped away from everyone for a brief moment. His parents were fawning over the fact that he got accepted into college on a sports scholarship. Same with Motoya. Your parents were openly wondering what college you would choose to go to. You got accepted to five different ones, one of them the same as Kiyoomi.
You and Motoya bid your parents a farewell and began to leave the school together for one last time. Kiyoomi stood at the gates waiting patiently for the two of you. His blazer now slung over one shoulder, he used his other arm to gently rest around your shoulder.
“I’ll see you at the dinner, Motoya. I’m going to walk Y/N home.”
Motoya dipped his head in acknowledgement before parting ways.
You and Kiyoomi laughed and reminisced over the last three years. The late nights studying. Hanging around each other's houses. Him keeping you company as you read your books at cafes. The cat you two found outside of the school your first year. The god awful game of telephone pictionary that almost got the three of you suspended your second year of school. The failed attempts of learning how to play volleyball in third year. It seemed that all of the memories so precious to your heart were coming to a cease.
Your laughs faltered as you approached the gate of your home.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do when you leave for Osaka.” You laughed nervously as his arm slid off of your shoulder. He unconsciously moved a strand of hair behind your ear.
“Easy. Just go to the same school as me. It’s not that difficult of a decision.”
You laughed. “You know I haven’t even begun to choose the college I want to go to yet. I haven’t weighed the pros and cons of each school. Plus you got a full ride.” You sighed.
“Well a pro is that I’m there. I think that’s enough.” He tilted his head at you.
You let out a short laugh before turning your head away from him. “If only it was that simple.” You wondered aloud.
“I have to see how good the program is for what I want to do. I know that they’re the top in the country for it but will it really benefit me? What if financial aid doesn't end up coming through and I have student loans out the ass? What if housing is full? If I don’t have anywhere to live?”
Your thoughts were cut off by Kiyoomi stifling a laugh. He used a single hand to cover his mouth as he looked down at you. You shoved his chest playfully.
“What’s so funny?”
“You worry too much for someone who’s so smart.”
You rolled your eyes at him. He ran his hand through his hair before he rested it on his neck, his gaze never leaving yours.
“I don’t think I’ve ever told you how pretty I think you are.” He reached over and cupped your face. His long slender fingers gently tucked the rest of your hair behind your ear. He felt your skin heat up below his hand and laughed.
“Are you trying to be funny because you’re really bad at it.”
Before you could even react, Kiyoomi quickly closed the gap between the two of you. His lips were soft as he gently pressed his lips against yours. Your hands rose up quickly against his sides. Slightly panicking. He tilted your chin up slightly and you finally kissed him back.
You felt him smile against your lips as he pulled you closer.
He pulled away. Grinning like an idiot.
“I think you should go to that school in Osaka with me. I’m going to have an apartment and everything.”
You placed your arms around his shoulders and his slinked down to your waist.
“We’ll see.”
Kiyoomi’s body sunk into itself.
“I’ve been waiting to do that for quite some time now and that’s all you say? ‘We’ll see?’ It’s really not enough.”
“I mean who said I haven’t been waiting to kiss you too?”
He raised an eyebrow at you as you leaned up to place a kiss on the corner of his mouth.
“For how long?”
“After nationals in our second year when I saw a horde of fan girls for one of the best aces in Japan.” You reached up and pinched his cheek. “I thought to myself that I wasn’t jealous or anything, but I think I’ve thought about you romantically for a while now.” He narrowed his eyes at you before shaking his head for you to let go of his face.
“But you’re right. You’ve never told me I was pretty before, Kiyoomi.” You used your hands to bring his face down to yours.
That was the first time you and Sakusa Kiyoomi had ever kissed.
-
Sakusa Kiyoomi was disappointed to say the least that you did not follow him to college in Osaka.
Or so he thought.
Two weeks after his move there was a knock on his apartment door at 7am in the morning. Kiyoomi was a morning person, but he had no clue who it could possibly be. He pulled a sweatshirt over his body and pulled on sweatpants over his boxers.
There you stood with a suitcase in each hand.
“I chose Osaka because I don’t think I can handle being away from you for four years.”
Kiyoomi enveloped you in a hug, making you drop your luggage. He pressed your body against his chest and buried his head into the crook of your neck. He peppered kisses on your  cheekbone until you turned to face him. He held your hands and kissed you sweetly before pulling you inside.
“Kiyo, you need to grab my bags.” You mumbled into his mouth. He gently put you down. Grabbed your bags and placed them inside and turned to face you. You looked at him expectantly with your arms open towards him. Without missing a beat he picked you up and spun you around.
“Are you sure you want to go to school out here?” He pressed a kiss to your temple. You nodded against his chest.
“One exception though.” You pulled away from him.
“Will you be my boyfriend, Sakusa Kiyoomi?”
“Yes.”
This was the first day you spent as an official couple.
-
The semester was beginning to take a toll on the both of you. Fortunately enough, the both of you managed to be taking the same courses for your basics and had a basic study regiment in the evenings. Kiyoomi’s volleyball practice ran from ungodly hours of the morning and the fatigue was catching up to him as finals week set upon the two of you.
You returned from the library and walked into the bedroom to see Kiyoomi sound asleep, laying on his side snuggling a pillow. Quiet snores spread through the room as his mouth was slightly agape.
You quickly showered and changed into a shirt of his before snuggling into bed beside him. You ran your fingers through his hair causing him to lean into your touch.
“Y/N” He groaned into the pillow.
“Hm?”
“C’mere.” He lifted up his arm as an invitation. You quickly obliged as his arm encased you into his chest.
“How was studying? Sorry I left so early.” He yawned.
Your arm wrapped around his side as your fingernails began to graze his bare back.
“It’s fine, Kiyo. I know how tired you’ve been lately. Being a student athlete is tough enough as it is.”
“I don’t want you to be stressed out because of my incapabilities.”
“You’re only human. And I’m stressed out because college is tough, not because you’re incapable of things.”
“I know.”
“Your voice is cute when you’re tired.”
“No, it isn’t.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Nevermind.”
“I beg your pardon?.”
“Have I ever told you that you’re super handsome when you’re dead quiet. I know I can’t see you right now, but the whole brooding thing  you usually have going on is usually pretty nice in my opinion.”
“Shut up.”
“Okay, Kiyo.”
“Y/N  I’ll literally make you do all of the cleaning next week.”
“But Kiyo-”
“Shut up.”
“Anyways. I’ve missed you.”
“We live together. And study together. And go to school together.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yeah.”
“Yeah.”
“Yeah.”
“Remember that one time that you fell down the stairs in our second year? In front of the entire class?”
“I hate you.”
“I love you.”
“What?”
You sat up abruptly staring down at your boyfriend. He sat up, propping his hands on either side of his body. He blinked the sleep out of his eyes.
“I love you, Kiyoomi.”
A lazy smile graced the black-haired man’s features.
“I mean it!”
“I know you do. That’s why I’m smiling.”
“I really mean it, Kiyoomi. You’ve been my best friend since middle school. We spent every waking moment together. I got to grow with you as friends. I had the opportunity to watch you bloom into your passion by bringing you daifuku one day because I saw a quiet boy practicing all by himself. I’m so lucky for that moment of time. Even though we’re busy now, we get to hold each other at night and see each other’s achievements during the day. I think it’s so amazing that we have each other.  I just want to cherish you.”
“I love you too.” He clasped his hand over yours.
“And I mean it too.”
That was the first time you and Sakusa exchanged ‘I love yous’.
-
The semester had come to an end. Kiyoomi rested his head on your lap as you watched TV and he watched volleyball highlights on his phone. You played with his curls absentmindedly.
“I can’t believe that Kageyama Tobio is playing on the Olympic team this year.”
“Who?”
“The kid who beat Wakatoshi our second year.”
“Oh that one.”
“I want to play in the Olympics.”
“I know Kiyo you just need to keep doing what you're doing and you’ll be on that stage in 2020.”
You pulled out your cell phone and took a picture of the two of you. Managing to get his glare and everything. You shoved the photo you just took in his face.
“Look! Do you know who that is?”
“Me. Sakusa Kiyoomi.”
“Correct!” You exclaimed. “He’s also my boyfriend and a future Olympian! A future representative of Japan’s men's volleyball team!”
Kiyoomi laughed. He locked his phone and just kept on laughing.
“You’re so precious.” He managed between laughs. He pulled his head from your lap and squeezed your cheeks with both of his hands.
“My girlfriend believes in me!” He sang song.
You placed your hands over his and pulled him forward into a quick kiss.
“Am I not supposed to?”
“I never said that.”
“You’re kind of suggesting it. Do you not like me anymore?”
He leaned forward, putting his lips on yours once more.
“You know I don’t like you, I love you.”
(nsfw)
Butterflies rose in your chest at his words. You gave him the dopiest grin before you leaned into  him once more. Your body leaned into his. Kiyoomi’s hands rose under your shirt as he pulled you on top of his lap. Your legs fell on either side of him as your fingers ran through his hair. As your hands reached the back of his head you fisted his curls, earning a quiet groan from the man underneath you. His hands pressed roughly into the skin of your hips. The surprise let Kiyoomi slip his tongue into your mouth.
He began to place open mouth kisses down your neck as his hands traveled up to your breasts. You quickly slid your shirt off over your head to give him more access. His kisses continued across your collarbone and down to your breast.
“Kiyo-” Your breath hitched in your throat as he swirled his tongue.
“Hmm?” He mumbled into your chest.
“Let’s go to the bedroom.” You said firmly, as you slid your hands to his shoulders to get him to look at you.
His dark eyes sparkled at you and nodded.
You got off of his lap and made your way to your room. Dropping your shorts to the ground, you kicked them to the corner of the room. Before you could even reach the bed, you were enveloped in a hug from behind. Kiyoomi’s bare chest warmed your back as he began to kiss your neck, your shoulders. A hand firmly on your hip and a hang squeezing your breast. His hands traveled your body hungrily. You turned to meet his face. Caressing it with the back of your hand you placed a gentle kiss on his nose, making him smile at you.
Your hands draped over his boxers as you generously worked them down his legs. Placing, small, eager kisses on his lips.
“I don’t think we have condoms-”
“Yes we do. They’re in my nightstand, I bought them just in case we ever-”
“Mhmm”
You lured Kiyoomi over to the bed as you stroked him. He opened the bedside table and carefully tore the wrapper before rolling the condom on. He hovered over you as he lowered you onto the bed, his lips not leaving yours once. His fingers caressed you, slipping in and out slowly, you moaned into his mouth, making him speed up ever so slightly as he kissed all over your body. He wanted to show you physically how much he loves you.
He positioned himself between your legs before slipping himself in. The two of you gasped at the newfound sensation. He moaned into your neck as your hands failed to grab at his back. He kissed your cheek and smiled at you. He began to roll his hips into you repeatedly. He was weary of his actions as his hands roamed your entire body. He didn’t want to go too slow or two fast. He never asked, he just studied your reactions as he pressed deeper into you. He began to hold a steady rhythm as moans began to spill from your mouth. Each sound encouraging him to unconsciously move faster.
“Kiyoomi.” Your nails sunk into his back, your lips struggled to find his. He moaned your name into your neck. He was reaching his climax as he shuddered inside of you. He kissed your forehead gently.
“I love you. Forever. I cannot imagine anyone else I’d share this life with.”
You stared at your boyfriend. He was studying your face with great intent as if to check if he made a dent. His hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat. You pushed it back making his curls bounce as they flopped back down. His body rose and fell steadily as he caught his breath over you. He gave you a small smile as he flattened your hair on your head, he gently pulled out of you before sitting on his knees and sliding the condom off of himself.
“Give me a second please.”
He walked to the bathroom and disposed of it and began to pick up the clothes from earlier and put them in the hamper. He returned to your side. He propped up his head on his hand as ran his fingers through your hair.
“I’m so lucky. Everyday.”
You smiled as he placed yet another tender kiss on your lips.
The night ended with Sakusa curled on your bare chest, fast asleep while you held him dearly through the night.
That was you and Sakusa Kiyoomi’s first time.
-
Today was Kiyoomi’s first V-League game.
You were never typically awake at the same times that he was. Ever.
You sleepily followed him around the apartment. He brushed his teeth first. You stifled a laugh as he began the skin care routine you taught him in high school. He ignored you, but followed suit. Next he fixed his bed head. Well you did. You sat on the counter with him between your legs as you gently raked product through his hair.
“Omi Omi.” You sang as he relaxed into your hands.
“Don’t call me that.”
“Why? I think Miya was onto something when he started calling you that.”
“No he wasn’t. He tainted the second half of my name when he started that shit.”
“Don’t be that way, Omi Omi!”
“Shut up!” He yawned.
“Or what, Omi?” You hopped off the sink and walked away from him.
“You’re gonna do what you did to me, last night? Right now?”
A sly grin rested on his lips before he pushed you to the bed.
“Good thing we woke up early.”
-
You stayed arm and arm with Kiyoomi at the bar where his teammates won. The Black Jackals won their very first game.
You glanced up at your mask-clad boyfriend as he glared at his teammates.
“Omi Omi! I didn’t know you were bringing your girlfriend!”
“Hi! You must be Atsumu!” You extended your hand to shake his, but Sakusa cut in front of you.
“Don’t touch him.” He rolled his eyes.
“It’s called being courteous, Kiyo. You ought to try it!” You shoved his chest.
“I can’t believe Omi Omi has a heart. He actually talks about us at home.” Bokuto bunched up his shirt on his chest, his eyes watering.
“You’re telling me.” Atsumu huffed.
“To be clear, the only person I respect on this team is Meian and I think it’s all valid.” Sakusa glared at the two men. His gaze lost it’s focus once he heard your laugh and reeled back into the conversation that you were having with Hinata.
His teammates smiled as they were watching a never before seen Sakusa Kiyoomi.
As the night progressed more and more drinks were spread amongst the team.
You and Kiyoomi balanced the drinks the best you could, but after all, it was your first time drinking. Ever.
Both of you, equally wasted, exited the bar and ordered a ride home. Laughing up the stairs the two of you tumbled into your bedroom. Kissing and everything in between.
Sakusa Kiyoomi looked at you like you were the light of his life and he made sure you knew it.
You studied his features as he drunkenly told you stories of when he was little. His dark brown eyes squinted at you as little laughs escaped his mouth. Anytime he smiled one corner of his mouth rose higher than the other. Anytime Kiyoomi reached for your hand, he always managed to be the most gentle with his spindly fingers. His kisses were so soft. Even now as he continuously reaches down to kiss you. Even though your own lips are numb from the alcohol rushing in your veins.
This is true love.
-
“I told you that you’d be in the Olympics.”
You wrapped your arms around him as you stood behind the couch, smothering his cheek with kisses.
“I know! I’m glad everything paid off!”
“Me too. Me too.
“I think this is the first time I’ve ever dated an Olympian.” You stared at the phone in Kiyoomi’s hand. The congratulatory email.
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“What do you think about marrying an Olympian? Pretty practical, right?”
You grinned from ear to ear.
“I think that’s the best idea you’ve had in a while.”
“I’d like you to know I’m full of great ideas. I mean we’ve been together for six years. And it’s because I kissed you since you wouldn’t kiss me. I think that it’s a fair assumption that I’m the brains of this relationship. I also made the idea for us moving into this city home. I also made the executive decision for us to buy a cat.”
“Kiyo. That’s not how that went. You know damn well I brought the cat home when you were done with practice and you hit me with the whole ‘I guess we can do it if we clean the litter box everyday’. I think you’re remembering things incorrectly. Per usual.”
“Dunno, but it took my decision making to allow her to stay in this home.”
“Uh huh. Now that I think about it, it would be my first time marrying an Olympian.”
“Well duh. I mean look at me.”
“ I was talking about Miya, you dolt.”
He let out a hearty laugh. “I guess you can take the role of the funny one.”
-
The first time Sakusa became a parent. He had almost passed out in the delivery room. He’ll never acknowledge it to you, however when friends asked he claimed that childbirth was ultimately disgusting.
His eyes shone the moment your son entered the world.
He held him delicately as if he could break. He was laughing as he gently brought him down to you.
You stared down at the baby you and your husband had brought into the world and you couldn’t help but think of the first time you saw Sakusa Kiyoomi and the blessings the boy brought into your life.
(A/N) the smut scene wasnt supposed to be good!!!!!!!!! It was their first time so it wasn’t supposed to be some god tier orgasming experience. It was supposed to be plain and about their connection!
thanks for reading (:

Kissletoe
Tumblr media
Pairing: College!Bucky Barnes AU x Female Reader
Summary: You’re not a fan of mistletoes. You think it’s an outdated Holiday tradition and an excuse for lovesick fools to steal a kiss. Unlucky for you, college parties are riddled with them this year and someone’s been trying to meet you under one all night.
Warnings: College shenanigans (no one cares in the real world). Smut 18+ (unprotected sex, vaginal penetration & fingering, oral [female receiving], handjob & attempted dirty talk/goofy sex?). Language. Mentions of drugs and alcohol. & bad Christmas pickup lines.
Title Inspiration: “Kissletoe” by 3OH!3
A/N: I’ve never been kissed under the mistletoe let alone attended a legit college party because I’ve been lame my whole life. 🔔 ‘Tis that season! 🎄 Happy Holidays, ya filthy, lovely readers! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Raise your hand if you’re on the naughty list this year! ❤️ Enjoy!
Tumblr media
It’s the end of the college fall semester and for the majority of students, the only way to celebrate surviving finals week is to let loose and party, especially right before you’re all forced to go back home to visit family for the Holidays.
“Where do you think you’re going dressed like that?” You hear your friend and roommate Natasha ask.
You stop stuffing your belongings in a box and pause at her question to look down at your current attire - black leggings paired off with an oversized University college-style sweatshirt. You had your hair pulled up in a messy bun, your face clear of any make-up, and lastly your feet were clad in funky, fuzzy socks. This is what you normally wore inside the dorm around her, and you certainly didn’t need to dress to impress just to go home. What was she on about?
“Uh, home? Where else would I be going at the end of the semester?” You reply, an obvious answer.
“Don’t be a smartass,” she retorts, and is quick to follow up when she sees the knowing look on your face and mouth open to retaliate with an even sassy response, “and don’t even start!”
She knew you’d say something like you were exactly that, smart. You in fact had amazing grades and excelled in every course you’d enrolled in. You were confident that you’d aced your exams, so you’re not checking the portal every chance you could get to see if the professor had uploaded your grades yet.
“You’re not supposed to be leaving until Monday,” she reminded you.
“I know, but I mean, there’s no rule saying I had to stay here until then,” you clarify, continuing to pack up more of your things, “I’d rather much get a head start.”
“You’re that eager to get away from me, huh?” She says, feigning sadness.
“You’re the only thing I’m going to miss about college,” you assure her.
College was a different experience for everyone. It was an introduction to the real world. Some used it to start anew, to buckle down and make something of themselves, others used it as an extension to repeat four more years of high school.
You took your studies very seriously, especially if you wanted to maintain your scholarship. It was a known fact college wasn’t cheap and you were fortunate to be here on one. With all that aside, you still knew when to have some fun. After all, all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy, right? You didn’t want to be that kind of person, you wanted to enjoy your college years, and luckily you had almost a polar opposite friend in Natasha to level you out.
“We just survived another week of finals,” she states, and grabbing your arms to stop you for just one second, “what better way to celebrate than partying?”
She sees the conflicted look in your eyes, and can tell you’re weighing out the pros and cons. There were a lot of cons: you’d be surrounded by tons of people, most of which were going to be drunk as fuck or high out of their minds on whatever substance was passed around and the threat of getting taken advantage of by some stranger. The pros? You had some steam to let off and this was a chance to gather and see some of your other friends before the Holiday break. ‘Tis the season, right?
“I guess you’re right,” you start, beginning to compromise, “why not? It’ll be like a little send off,” you decide, throwing in a shrug, and that was it.
“We’re college kids, it’s our right,” Natasha shrugs, before digging into one of your boxes and pulling out one of your cute dresses. You could always count on her to help look good too.
Tumblr media
When you both take the short walk to the house, where tonight’s party would be taking place, you abruptly halt at the end of the front porch steps, breaking your locked arms with Natasha.
“Jesus, what’s wrong?” She curses lightly as she almost trips backwards.
“This house…” you start, taking a step back and look up to inspect it, squinting, as if that would do you any good in the dark.
“Yeah?” She asks, a little too impatient, obviously hiding something.
“It’s familiar,” you continue, still trying to find out why it was so. Usually, that wasn’t a good thing...
“Come on. What are you talking about? It’s just a house. Don’t think too much and have fun tonight!” She says, stomping back down the steps and grabbing your arm to drag you up towards the front door.
“I guess you’re right,” you say, giving up again. What were you so worried about?
“Aren’t I always?” She comments, and is, again, quick to shut you down when she sees you open your mouth. She presses her finger to the doorbell just as your mouth closes, and you both await the host.
You look off to the side and stare at the Greek letters tacked onto the wall. You knew you weren’t going to let it go on trying to find out why this house looked so familiar. Then, just when you’ve figured it out, your eyes widen in realization, the grip around your arm intertwined with Natasha’s tightens, feeling your attempt to slip away. The door swings open and the voice that booms out of the person, verifies your answer.
“Well, well, well...the weather outside sure is frightful, but this,” Bucky Barnes starts out singing before looking only in your direction, “oh, seeing you, is so delightful,” ending in a somewhat serious note.
“God, I hate winter,” you comment off to the side. It earns you a jab from Natasha, silently asking you to play nice.
He greets Natasha and easily lets her slip past him into the house. You call out her name, appalled that she left you alone with Bucky. Wasn’t that some rule? Never leave your friends alone at a Frat party.
“You look beautiful,” Bucky says sincerely when it’s just the two of you, to which you don’t respond, but roll your eyes. You didn’t come here to get seduced or hit on, but nonetheless shiver, and logically you could blame it on the cold weather and not the way that comment from him made you feel, then attempt to get inside the warm house.
"Excuse me,” he says, holding out his arms on either side of the door frames, blocking your entrance both ways, “where is my Christmas kiss?“ he asks, leaning in close to you.
“What the hell are you talking about?” You ask incredulously and back away. You owed him no such thing, but when you see the sly smirk on his lips, and his head signal for you to look up, you discover a traditional mistletoe hanging right above your heads.
Bringing your head back to its regular position, you look him dead in the eyes, “I’m not going to kiss you under the mistletoe, Barnes,” you scoff at his attempt to smooch you.
“Why not?” He presses, shuffling his weight from one leg onto the other, and before you can even give him an answer, you both hear your name being shouted from behind him. Bucky whips his head back and you do your best to look over his shoulder.
It came from your friend Wanda, who was excitedly waving you over to her. You smile and wave back at her, internally grateful that luck was on your side at this moment. Bucky turns back around and stares at you, wondering how to pick back up on your conversation, but when he doesn’t come up with anything, he sighs defeatedly, drops his arms and finally lets you in.
You make your way over to Wanda engulfing her with a huge hug. Natasha was close by, sipping on her drink. You’ll grill her later for leaving you alone with Bucky. She knew not to do that, but she did it at every chance she got. Now, you knew why she brought you to this specific house party.
“You weren’t planning on leaving without a proper farewell, were you?” Wanda asked worriedly. You immediately pieced together that Natasha had ratted you out on your attempt to leave campus and head back home early.
“It’s not forever, Wan,” you assure her. It was literally only for a few weeks, but while everyone would probably only be a few hours away from each other or a few states apart different, Wanda would be flying back to her home country to spend the Holidays with her family. You’ll admit, you could’ve been a little more considerate and sensitive.
“I’ll still miss you,” she says, the admission melting your heart, not even thinking about how the separation would be on others.
“She’s right, it’s not forever,” Natasha interjects, not allowing for any sad vibes on your last few hours of the semester together, “let’s make some memories tonight,” she says before handing you a drink.
Tumblr media
Bucky, as hard as he tried to cover it up, rejoins his group of friends, Steve and Sam, sulking. He’d gotten you alone again, but failed, and he vowed to never give up. He had a crush on you, simple as that, but you were playing hard to get, and all this time spent on playing cat and mouse when you could be doing other things.
“Man, just save yourself from any further embarrassment and give up,” Sam tells him while also handing him a drink of his own, which Bucky accepts and quickly takes a swig from.
“Never,” he said, determined and slightly winces at the burn in his throat, his body almost warming in an instant, “I’m gonna get my Holiday kiss.”
“Why do you even care? You’re usually not one behind this Holiday shit,” he asks, looking around the crowded room.
“I’m not, but it gives me a reason to get close to her,” Bucky admits pathetically, staring into the red solo cup before taking the last swig, crushing it in his hand and air balling it to the trash.
“Dude!” Steve chastises him about adding onto the mess they’d have to clean afterwards, to which Bucky shrugs at.
“You can’t expect her to just kiss anyone under the mistletoe,” Steve reminds him. He knew it wasn't an easy conquest for any guy to gain your affection.
“I’ve been a good boy this year, alright, I’m gonna get her to see what she’s been looking for has been in front of her this whole time,” Bucky says trying not to sound or look as predatory as he watched you disappear into the kitchen with your friends.
Tumblr media
You suppose the saying rules were meant to be broken, were taken a bit too literal by your friends, even college party rules because you’re left alone again. Wanda had abandoned the trio for some alone time with her boyfriend, who everyone dubbed Vision or Vis for short due to how outrageously innovative he was. Natasha decided to partake in a classic game of beer pong, something you incredibly sucked at, so there was no way she was going to recruit you as her partner nor were you interested in standing there awkwardly watching the game go on.
Surprisingly, the only place that seemed to be of a quiet enough spot to think was the backyard patio. You could see there was a fire lit and some other students scattered or sprawled on the grass. Quickening your pace, you manage to claim a vacant lawn chair next to the fire and hope you’d stay warm and at peace.
There you start to think that being in attendance tonight would’ve made no difference. Natasha was just good at persuading you into things. Call it peer pressure or whatever, but you put your faith and trust in her to not believe she’d ever steer you in the wrong direction, so why were you so bothered being here?
“You know, refusing to kiss someone under the mistletoe is bad luck,” you hear the voice of the reason why.
“I don’t believe in that bullshit,” you respond, watching as he plops down on the empty seat next to you.
“Really? Then why haven’t you been out on a date in so long?” he asks tauntingly.
“How would you know?” You ask a bit offended.
Why was he so concerned about your love life? You were never close with Bucky growing up and if anyone was of an impression you were, it was only because of Steve, who welcomed everyone, and that included you when you moved into the neighborhood when you were a little girl.
All throughout elementary school, until things started developing, puberty probably, it further separated you from Bucky. Steve blossomed a little later in life, so it helped solidify a good friendship with him, the same couldn’t be said for Bucky. You didn’t hate him, just got annoyed by his harmless teasing.
“I’ll have you know I have other priorities,” your attempt at an excuse was subtle, but you didn’t owe him an explanation anyways.
“Sure,” he says in a tone that suggests he didn’t believe you.
You watch as he lights up a cigarette, takes a small drag, and the cloud of smoke puffing out from his lips. He notices your stare and digs into his coat pocket, fishing out the pack before offering you one. You accept and pluck one out of the carton, he follows up with sticking out his lighter and you lean in closer to him to place the end of your stick against the flame.
You weren’t going to deny the relieving effect the nicotine had running through your body. College was stressful and while you weren’t one to abuse substances, a hit every now and then helped calm your nerves.
“So why is it you won’t kiss anyone under the mistletoe?” He asks, leaning back on the plastic chair, his head turning to the side, full attention on you.
He was enchanted by the girl, who grew up into a beautiful young woman, sitting next to him, slowly killing herself with every inhale and exhale of the cigarette between her lips, but you weren’t just attractive to Bucky, you were every bit incredible to him. You were smart, helpful, loyal to your friends and he was just misguided sometimes in life that led you to astray from him.
“It’s just an excuse for guys to steal a kiss from some poor girl...for lonely people to fake love,” you said almost bitterly.
Truth was, you had a bitter experience with a guy who’d led you on in high school after accidentally hearing that he could bet his friends he could get you to make out with him and he’d do so by using a mistletoe as a ruse.
Bucky detected some distaste in your response but decides not to interrogate you on it any further. There’d been a lot of growing up between the two of you since you’d both been estranged during your teenage years, and certain life events were missed on either party. So, where did you both stand in each other's lives now? You weren’t sure if you could call each other friends. It wasn’t easy to avoid Bucky, what with all the mutual friends and classes you shared, including the same street back home.
“I didn’t throw this party just to see everyone before they leave or to celebrate the end of finals,” he reveals, after several, somber minutes of silence, the cigarettes in your hands quickly burning out.
“Then why did you?” You ask curiously, meeting his gaze.
“To see you,” he simply admits. It was vague.
“How’d you even know I’d show up?” You quiz him.
“Because I begged Natasha to convince you,” he freely says, exposing his plan.
You were a smart person, but you couldn’t figure Bucky out. Why would he do that? Or for that matter, say something like that. What was his endgame here?
“Tis the fuckin’ season,” you comment offhand, getting up from the seat to leave. You stomp out your cigarette and prepare to head back inside and bid your farewells.
You’re just about to step through the threshold, when you feel a large hand wrap around your arm, halting you in place in the middle of the sliding screen door.
“Am I really that bad?” He inquires, and you know he’s not asking about just kissing him under the mistletoe anymore. Bucky always wore his heart on his sleeve, no matter how tough he appeared to be. It fooled a lot of people, sometimes you included, but in this moment, he seemed to genuinely be concerned about your perspective about him.
You were too grown to blame how the course of your relationship with Bucky had gone south on silly teenage phases. You knew it was much deeper than that, it was how sad it made you feel.
You’d harbored a small crush on him back then and it was cruel to see him grow into a handsome, charming guy and go out with other girls. He never showed an interest in you in the past and it was getting exhausting trying to get his attention, it was proving to be a distraction in your life, so it was then you’d vowed to focus on yourself and the life ahead of you, a life that didn’t revolve or involve Bucky.
However, a part of you, the risky and impulsive part of you, said you had less than a handful of months left before you were set to walk the stage and graduate. If you did what you were about to do, you could avoid Bucky for just one more semester, then you’d move far, far away and most likely never see him again. With a quick glance up, you give in to the idea of this side of you, lean in and plant your lips on Bucky’s soft ones.
Bucky is left dumbfounded, eyes still half closed when you pull away. He was shocked, caught off guard, and you by a totally different notion. You like him, you’ve always liked him.
It was a decent kiss if anyone would’ve caught it, at least you hoped it appeared it was, and that Bucky could convince you of it being so…
“You said kissing under the mistletoe is for lonely people to fake love...so then why do I feel so alive?” he asks you in a daze.
He doesn't succeed in convincing you.

How you’d both managed to move past that scene at the doorway without raising suspicion was beyond you two. The fact you both found a vacant room was an even more impressive feat at the moment.
“You better have locked that door,” you say, attempting to make it sound like a threat, but with you underneath him, you were anything but.
Shoes scattered along the pathway to the bed, his thick jacket following in suit. You’d managed to pull your lips back from his, but he couldn’t keep his off of yours as they trailed from the corner of your lips, along your jawline and down your neck. You feel his tongue drag just along your pulse, causing your hips to thrust up. You let out a moan at what you felt through his jeans and how he started sucking and nibbling over the spot he’d licked.
“Why? Don’t want everyone finding out how naughty you actually are?” He questions back teasingly with a cocky grin, and as he tugs at the sleeves of his unbuttoned shirt.
You don’t have a comeback for him, but instead you lightly shove him back and try to escape from underneath, hoping to get through to him and show you’re in fact serious. The last thing you wanted was for any of your friends to walk in on you two in the act.
“Relax!” He says, also sitting up and reaching out and pulling you back to him, “I locked it,” he assures, leaning in closer, “not even Santa will know what we’re doing,” then his lips reclaim yours, his tongue delving in your mouth. You’re once more on your back, lips locked and heavy. Had you known kissing Bucky was this good, you’d have kissed him earlier.
Bucky’s hands run up your thighs, snake their way underneath, you feel his fingers ghost over your scantily clad pussy. The tingling sensation causes the feeling in the pit of your stomach to brew.
“You want me to touch you?” He asks huskily while still pecking your lips.
“Yes,” you almost immediately answer, desperate for his touch.
“How bad?” Oh, he knows how bad, but he had so much fun watching you crumble.
“Bucky,” you start to whine.
“Tell me...how bad do you want me to touch you,” he repeats slowly.
“Fuck you,” you bite back. He was really going to make you say it, “I want you to touch me so bad...please, Bucky,” you quickly give in.
Bucky rewards you with a deep kiss as you feel him hook a finger on the thin slit of your panties and pull them to the side. He runs a long finger between your folds, and he pulls his lips away to inhale sharply.
“You’re so wet,” he states the obvious, bringing that same hand up to his lips to lick the pad of his thumb so he could start rubbing circles on your clit. You bite your lip and stare at him, he’s watching you carefully, loving how hard you’re trying to hold back.
“You want to be a good girl?” He asks, and you nod, “then don’t hold back. Stop fighting me, and I’ll make you come hard with just my fingers,” he bargains. You want to call him on his bluff, but he’s the one with the upper hand - literally. “But first…,” he starts, sitting up on his knees, hands back at his sides so he could scoot down lower on the bed, “...I want to taste this pussy,” his voice deep, and almost dangerous.
He pushes the end of your dress up, bunching it at the waist, to reveal your cute underwear. He pauses for a split second, “Holiyay indeed” he says to himself, reading the embezzled design on the front of your thong. You don’t even roll your eyes in annoyance anymore, because maybe if you kept quiet and submissive enough, you’ll finally get to come.
When he rids you of the garment, Bucky uses his fingers to spread your wet lips before running his tongue flat against it, only narrowing out when it reaches your clit. He spends a little more time at your there, circling it with his tongue, lightly kissing and sucking at it. His fingers start rubbing you, tracing the rim of the opening, while his mouth was still busy at work.
You're all but writhing from the buildup, your chest heaving up and down, stomach clenching tight from his doing, not prepared for when he inserts a finger inside your wet hole. You audibly gasped and reached a hand towards him, but he swats it away. You dare pick your head up to watch, and you’re met with his eyes, full of lust, looking up at you, but his mouth still latched onto your pussy. You can feel his finger slide in and out of you slowly, your mouth open displaying how good he’s making you feel.
In fact, it’s too good you’re not in control of your legs anymore as they kick and squirm at the feeling he’s bestowing on you, so he removes his finger away from you only to maneuver into a position where he could hook his arms under legs and basically slam your back down on the bed. You unconsciously start chanting his name, like a silent prayer for him to touch you down there again.
Your head is a little fuzzy, body on fire; you want to burst. Unable to pick up your head, you cast your eyes down on him just in time to see him spit on your already soaking cunt. You watch as he uses his fingers to spread the wetness all over before slipping two fingers inside of you.
The intrusion causes you to groan and back to arch, and you can’t help but grab at any part of the arm that his hand going to work on you, just making sure it doesn't go away until it gets the job done. He chuckles lightly at your eagerness with your hips bucking up at his palm.
“I promised I’d let you come, right?” He points out, which you nod fervently, loosen your grip and attempt to keep your hips at bay, so he could fulfill his promise. You feel his finger push in about knuckle-deep and curl inside, causing you to choke out a dry sob. You begin to bite your lip, hard, when he does it again and again.
Your hands are on autopilot, trying to heighten the pleasure your body was being coursed with, and they grab handfuls of your breasts, still confined in your dress. You squeeze and squish them together, anything to help you find that release sooner. Bucky’s gaze catches onto your moves and licks at his lips, the sight of your breasts threatening to spill out offers him a taste of what’s still yet to be unwrapped.
He speeds up his efforts, they’re proven efficient as you start clenching tight around his fingers, your arousal also coating the palm of his hand. He whispers tiny praises as you try to recover from the first orgasm. You swallow the lump in your throat and run your hands over your face, almost dazed and bewildered that Bucky was capable of pulling something like that out of you.
Your legs fall limp on the bed, the silence broken by Bucky, “such a sweet pussy,” he compliments, and you take a peek between your fingers to see his fingers pop out of his mouth from sucking his digits clean.
“Do you want to unwrap your gift?” He asks, crawling over to you. You manage to sit up, your body supported by your propped elbows, so Bucky is slightly hovering over you. You nod at his question and he brings one hand behind your head to swoop you in for a sweet kiss. You use both hands to hold his face in place to make the kiss last just a little longer.
Bucky reluctantly pulls away though so he could grab at the bunched fabric of your dress and pull it over your head, leaving you completely bare in front of him. He swears, eyes running over every part of you before sitting upright on his knees again.
You lean in and reach with both hands to unbuckle his belt, the clinking of metal sounding loud, button popping off in haste, and dragging the zipper down. You yank down at his fitted jeans to reveal the imprint of his hard cock under his boxer briefs. Fuck, he was big, that much you could see. You couldn’t keep your grabby hands away as you palm him through the fabric, his cock twitching at the indirect contact.
“Take it out,” he instructs, and you look up perilously at him, eyes begging him to confirm, “...it’s yours, baby girl,” and it was all the assurance you needed to peel his boxers down.
You wrap your hands around his length and start pumping him languidly. He was already hard and no doubt fully erect, but you immediately found how good it felt in your hands. With every pump, his pre-cum pools at the head, and with each trip your hands make up to the tip, they travel back down with the substance, effectively lathering him up and making him slick enough for an easy entry.
“I want to fuck you so bad,” he admits when you give his member an experimental squeeze, your fingers curl around him, the tips grazing along his balls.
Leaning in to place light kisses to his pecs, you look up at him, “well, you’ve been a good boy, so do it,” you say, hands retreating as you lie back down, “...fuck me, Bucky.”
Bucky lets out a low growl, kicks his bottoms away, and climbs back on top of you. He reaches down to grab his cock and starts running it up and down the length of your sex, causing your body to shudder. You could feel the ridges and just how hard he got before he slowly slid his cock inside. There’s a tiny sting on his entrance as his thick cock stretches your walls.
“Mmm, baby, it’s cold outside,” he starts playfully singing, “...but you, you’re so warm,” kissing your cheek, getting you to relax; not realizing you had held your breath trying to bear through the initial pain, “...and so wet,” he says pulling out with a lewd noise, before thrusting all the way back in, bottoming out.
He starts off sweet and slow, and while you liked that on some occasion, now wasn’t one of them. Bucky’s cock probed at your spot almost instantly and you found out you didn’t want to prolong the euphoric ending. His hands slip around your smaller frame, pulling your body up, closer to his, while his hips moved in waves crashing harder and harder into yours.
His face buried into the mattress next to your face, you hear his breathy moans, and you love that he doesn’t hold them back the slightest. Who didn’t like to hear how good the other person was making them feel, right? You grip and pull at his hair, while the other gabs at his buttocks, feeling it flex with each snap of his hips, and your legs tangled with his. Sweat that had built up on your bodies make the movements sloppy, muscles beginning to ache, both of you were about to peak.
“God, you feel so good,” he says, picking his head up, his hair matted and messy, he still looked sexy, “...you gonna come all over my cock now?” His words fuel you and your hips start driving into his, making him eat his own words, “fuck, baby, you’re gonna make me cum!”
“Yes, Bucky,” you coo, your hands gripping his sides, loving the feeling of his hard body, slick and warm to the touch, “...come,” you try coaxing him, but one particular thrust rips right through you and your walls start clenching him tighter than the fit.
You only finish the command when you’re riding the waves of the aftershock, “come on, Bucky, I want it...inside, please.” You definitely picked up on the fact that he liked to hear you beg and be specific with your wants.
Bucky soon stills, spurts of his hot cum splatter your walls that continue to flutter around his cock. His climax spreads warmth all over your lower body. Your limbs, both arms and legs, wrap around his exhausted body. He carefully drops his bodyweight on you, mindful of not suffocating you in the process.
When he’s regained regular breathing, using one of his hands, he reaches behind him in search of yours before interlocking your fingers and just holding it, you hold onto each other. Bucky picks up his head and stares at your hand in his, you follow his gaze and join him. They fit with one another perfectly, and even so, the light squeeze he gives it, lets you know it also felt right.
Tumblr media
“Well, where have you two been?” Sam says loudly, announcing you and Bucky’s arrival, rejoining your group of friends. Wanda and Vision close to each other, his arm around her frame, Natasha standing in between Sam and Steve, a refilled cup in each of their hands.
“I have been trying to escape this crazed man all night,” you playfully exaggerate.
“And yet you’ve managed to keep failing,” Bucky chimes in smugly, a cute smirk running across his features. This unearthed feeling testing your willpower to keep up with appearance and show resistance.
“Yeah, no thanks to my so-called friends,” pinning the blame on the two females in the room. Wanda turns red, guilty and slightly awful for abandoning you, but Natasha has a different reaction. She’s got that knowing smile on her face. It’s small, but very strong.
You watch as her eyes divert to the ceiling, you follow her gaze and then when you both look back at each other, the smile on her face turns into a full-blown smirk. There’s a collective sound of “oh’s” from everyone, noting the mistletoe above you and Bucky.
Turning to Bucky, who looks like he doesn’t know what to do, just stands there staring at you, not knowing what to expect. You’re supposed to act like nothing happened or reveal anything to your friends just yet, so he mentally prepares for a rebuttal to your impending rejection or insult to kiss him. Nothing could’ve prepared him for what you do instead.
You place a hand on the back of his neck and pull him down to you and smash your lips together. Bucky’s hands immediately grab a hold of your hips, he’d have to get used to the lightheaded feeling when he’s close to you.
The kiss is slow and probably not appropriate to be deemed as a simple traditional mistletoe kiss, but you both can’t help it and continue to allow your lips to slide against one another’s before there’s a rise of cheers, whistling and howls around you, shattering the bubble.
When you pull apart, you reluctantly walk away from Bucky and head to where Natasha stood, steal the cup from her hand and finish off the remainder of her drink, all while staring straight at her. She knew. Only when you’re done with the last sip, you give her the same small, sly smile. There are no words exchanged, and none needed.
“Guess, you have been a good boy this year, Barnes,” Sam jokes, but regardless is proud of his friend.
“Third time's the charm,” Bucky says casually, shrugging like it was no big deal, as if he hadn’t been desperately chasing you all night. You shake your head at his silliness, but nonetheless smile at him, your heart skipping a bit.
Who knew what you’d been looking for was hanging underneath the doorway staring at you face-to-face this whole time?

A/N: I can confidently say, I used one of these Christmas puns as a pickup line on a guy recently and it worked in my favor! Shoot your shot but stay safe in more than one way; these are them trying times. Also, the underwear thing is a real design I saw while looking through Victoria’s Secret sales…lol.

“That was a lot of chess,” Emily complained, nearly chugging her latte as she and Spencer left the coffee shop.
She pulled her beanie onto her head and braced herself for the snow as the taller boy held the door open for her. Emily almost slipped on the slushy tile floor on her way out but managed to keep her balance.
“Fifteen of the multiple-choice questions to be precise,” Spencer replied. The salted sidewalk crunched under their feet as they made their way across campus.
“I’m so glad it’s finally over,” she admitted. “I think I’ve had enough philosophy to last me a lifetime.”
“I’m enrolled in ‘Minds and Machines’ next semester,” he said. “I think I might try and get a double minor this time around.”
“What’s the goal? Three PhDs by the time you’re 24?” Emily quipped.
He was well on his way, having completed his engineering degree before she managed to graduate high school. He was 17, only two years younger than her, but somehow seemed like a kid. A kid with more education crammed into his brain than she could ever master in her life.
“Something like that,” he replied with a smile. His hair was getting long and he had tied it back during the exam. With last names starting with P and R, they were seated near each other in the large exam hall, and she glanced over at him as he fussed with his hair.
They stopped at the red light, watching as the cars and busses wooshed past them, sending the slush flying into the snowbanks. It had been a fairly sunny day, but bitterly cold. Now, the sun was setting and the campus was bathed in a warm golden glow. The snow had fallen the night before, leaving fluffy white snow covering their campus.
Emily had spent most of the day holed up in the library with Spencer, with him quizzing her on fallacies and philosophers. With his eidetic memory, he only really needed to read the material once. Earlier in the semester, she did feel useful when it came to editing each other’s essays. He always got bogged down with detail, word vomiting everything he knew, and she helped him with his structure and argumentation.
More studying awaited her back in her room. She rubbed at the back of her neck as she thought about the upcoming evening spent hunched over her desk studying criminal justice, a subject that left her questioning her degree half the time as she was forced to learn about the muddled ethics of justice.
That week, she had survived on minimal sleep, eating mostly bagels and coffee to sustain her. Her body was protesting with each step, and she had suffered from a constant tension headache for as long as she remembered. At least her college had that golden retriever walk around at the library yesterday, she thought to herself, sarcastically. Animal therapy definitely relieved all her stress. As if petting a dog for five minutes would fix the anxiety of finals season.
Two more exams, she reminded herself. You’ll make it.
Despite this mantra, Emily was conflicted. While finals were killing her, the end of the semester also meant winter break. Emily would be forced to go “home” for the holidays. For most college students, that meant going back to their respective towns and being surrounded by their loved ones. Emily, on the other hand, didn’t have anywhere she called home. Last winter break, her mom had at least been in DC, and Emily was able to catch up with some of her international school friends who were in the city. This time, her mom was stationed in London, and Emily knew she’d be roped back into her old life. She didn’t know anyone there and knew most of her break would be spent alone.
The last place she had called home was Rome, and now that was tarnished by her complicated past with that city.
Emily was good at being alone. Being an only child of a workaholic single mom meant she learned to keep her own company. She read a lot. She got good at running away, escaping her nannies, and skirting security in order to roam free. She’d be fine.
The problem was that Emily had gotten used to this. She rarely spent a moment alone these days. Whether it was walking to class with Spencer, or Hotch, or Derek, getting lunch with the team, surprise coffee dates with Penelope and spending almost every evening with her girlfriend, she hadn’t been left alone in ages. She didn’t miss it.
Their residence building had a warm yellow light shining out of the windows and a soft red brick facade. In the summer, ivy grew up the south facing side but in the winter, the ledges were covered in snow and the stone steps were slippery. She trudged forward, excited for the warm embrace of the dorm.
Spencer had other plans. He reached into the garish yellow plastic newspaper box that was stationed next to their doorway and retrieved this week’s newspaper.
“Come on Reid,” Emily said. “Just subscribe to the newsletter or something like the rest of us.”
He held up the cover to her in surprise. Usually it reported the news of a recent sports victory, or a change of policy announced by the administrators, or even a fun event held on campus. Sometimes there was even a dramatic protest or an important speaker coming to campus. But this week, the headline surprised her. In large font printed across the page read: “Multiple student politicians fired amid financial scandal.”
“That sounds bad,” Emily said. It did seem way more dramatic on newsprint than on a website, so maybe Spencer was onto something with his affinity for the printed word.
Grabbing a copy for herself, she then walked inside to escape the cold. Warm air greeted them as they entered their residence hall, and both students kicked the snow off their boots before trudging up the stairs. They read as they walked, but the route to their rooms was already muscle memory, so neither worried about stumbling on their way.
Normally, Emily wouldn’t willingly touch this sort of student politics with a ten foot pole. Sure, she was involved with the Criminology council, but there was a difference between the kind of person interested in petitioning for better accessibility to faculty events or running a bake sale, and the kind of students to embezzle thousands of student dollars like what the current student government executive seemed to be accused of doing.
She quickly ran her eyes down the page, the contents jogging a memory from Halloween, of Hotch and JJ discussing the early stirrings of said scandal.
“You know,” Spencer said, “I’m surprised they got a lot of this information, it’s notoriously difficult to file FOIAs for student governments, as they’re technically private corporations. So the fact that they got these files means that this is a much bigger scandal than one might assume.”
Corruption, bribery, embezzlement, nepotism. All words that jogged memories of hiding in the corner of political fundraisers, overhearing the worst of politics from too-drunk elites sipping on their wine and munching on charcuterie.
“I hate politics,” Emily said, stuffing her copy of the paper into her bag.
“I find it interesting. It’s basically a microcosm of our current political climate. In fact, I have subscribed to the print edition of fifteen student papers in the region,” Spencer said, “I like to keep informed on the coverage of student issues, and compare them to our own.”
“Why?!” Emily said with a laugh. “You know you can just look them up online.”
Spencer gave her a withering look, and she should have known better than asking about his aversion to tech. He loathed having to use his computer, as the LCD screens apparently gave him a headache. Penelope even gave him a pair of blue light glasses to attempt to alleviate the issue.
Then, he began to speak, at length, about the dying printed news industry and why print copies were better for understanding than screens et cetera. She made sure to nod and hum at appropriate points, but her mind kept wandering.
She wondered if her girlfriend was in her room. Emily missed her any time they were apart and she yearned to hold her in her arms once again. But she shouldn’t. She needed to work. She had too much to do. Her grades had slipped, slightly, this semester. Everyone warned her about how college would be harder than high school, but no one ever warned her how much the expectations were raised in second year.
Two more exams. She clutched her coffee tighter. She’d rather do anything else besides study at this point. Her body was exhausted, her mind frazzled. She wondered if she could even manage to get through a chapter of revision before conking out on her desk.
As she said goodbye to Spencer and struggled with her keys that were tangled up in their corresponding university-branded lanyard, JJ’s door opened.
“Hey girlfriend,” JJ greeted her, sounding way too much like a straight girl greeting her platonic friend for Emily’s taste. She gave her a pass because it sounded cute in her voice.
“JJ!” Emily said, somehow surprised to see her despite the fact that she lived right across the hall. Her girlfriend was dressed in sweatpants and an oversized sweater, with her straight hair tucked behind her ears and her face bare of make up. Her face was lit up with a smile, and Emily rushed towards her, planting a soft kiss on her lips.
“Hi JJ,” Spencer said as Emily and JJ kissed.
When they pulled apart, JJ gave Spencer a smile as a greeting and asked them how their exam went.
Spencer babbled about their Logic exams for a minute or two, as Emily basked in JJ’s presence. She grabbed onto her hand and found that it was so much hotter than her own and wasn’t sure if she held on tight because she was cold, or if she had missed her girlfriend.
“I’m just glad it’s over,” Emily said. “I never want to hear about fallacies again.”
Spencer seemed to want to say something, but fell silent at Emily’s tired expression.
“Wanna come in for a bit?” JJ whispered in Emily’s ear. Apparently she said so a touch too loud because Spencer replied instead.
“Sure!” he said, and then walked into JJ and Penelope’s room.
“I should really study,” Emily tried to argue, but a single glance into JJ’s deep, blue eyes had Emily melting.
JJ’s room was much messier than Emily had last seen it. Both desks showed clear markers of the ongoing exams, with papers and books piled high. In addition to this was an assortment of pillows strewn all over the floor.
“You guys are back early!” JJ said, after checking her watch, “I thought it was a two hour exam?”
“I finished in an hour,” Spencer said, “and Emily only needed an extra half hour on top of my time.”
Damn straight, Emily thought, feeling somewhat competitive with the boy-genius despite herself.
She really should study, but the prospect of seeing her girlfriend outweighed the desire to sit hunched over a textbook for another evening.
Emily and Spencer kicked off their boots, placing them neatly on the mat by the door before peeling their jackets off and hanging them on the back of her door. Emily wasn’t sure if she liked winter. Whenever her mother was stationed in the Middle East she yearned for snow, but now that she was experiencing the Nor’easter for the first time, the desert sounded like a good time.
“Well there goes my plan,” JJ said, blowing her hair out of her face with a puff of air.
Spencer flopped onto Penelope’s neatly-made bed, collapsing into the assortment of pink pillows while carefully keeping his take-away cup upright. Emily sat down next to JJ on her bed.
“Your plan?” Emily asked.
“Yeah,” JJ said, sounding a bit shy. “I had this whole plan to make up a blanket fort here for you, and I would surprise you with it when you walked in.’”
JJ gestured with her hands at the mess. Blankets and pillows were strewn about, and a bundle of fairy lights were laying in the middle of the floor.
“Then you came back early,” JJ concluded. “Spence, I thought you’d keep her occupied longer!”
“You didn’t tell me that,” he replied. Spencer looked quizzically at her, shrugged, then took another sip of his coffee.
“I just wanted us to have a cute date night,” JJ admitted. “I know you’re so stressed, and you deserve a break.”
Emily grabbed her girlfriend’s moving hands and held them in her own. She felt overwhelmed. JJ was so… thoughtful. Caring. Attentive. So many things that were absolutely foreign to Emily. No one had ever tried to impress her like this.
“It’s okay,” Emily said. “We don’t need anything special to have a cute date night. You’re cute enough.”
JJ gave Emily a goofy smile in response.
“Okay,” JJ said. “If you say so.”
“You’re building a blanket fort?” Spencer asked. “I actually have some experience with blanket fort architecture.”
“You do?” JJ asked, raising her eyebrows skeptically.
“Of course,” he replied, seeming almost offended that she questioned him. “It sparked my interest in engineering. I wanted to overcome the problem of chair-tippage when it came to building the structure, so I devised a system of counter-weights that I found increased the structural integrity by 53%. My mom always told me that I could be an architect, but I thought the sciences better suited my intellect.”
“Oh?” Emily asked, genuinely interested. How would someone measure the structural integrity of a blanket fort?
“Actually, I have some blueprints. Let me grab them,” he said, standing up and making a move for the door.
“Of course you have blueprints,” JJ laughed.
“I should probably go feed Gideon, anyway. I’ll be right back!” Spencer  said. Before closing the door behind him.
“Gideon?” Emily asked.
“His fish,” JJ said, “the one he won at the fair. It’s named after his professor, I think.”
She shrugged. The kid was weird, they tended to just accept that.
“I guess Spencer’s joining us on date night,” JJ said. “Sorry. I know you’re stressed and probably want to be studying, but I thought we’d order pizza and just have one night off. Just us. And Spencer.”
JJ planted a firm kiss on Emily’s lips, leaving her dazed and blushing.
“Relaxing sounds perfect,” Emily said, pulling her girlfriend closer to her. “I can’t believe it’s already exams. This semester has flown by. Soon it’ll be winter break, and I won’t get to see you.”
“I can’t imagine you not being right across the hall,” JJ said. “Who will give me kisses when I want them?”
JJ kissed Emily, sucking on Emily’s bottom lip slightly before pulling apart to look at her.
“I know you’re joking, but I hope you’re not kissing anybody else, no matter the circumstances.”
With that established, Emily pounced on her girlfriend, pushing her onto her bed and kissing her deeply. She intertwined her fingers in the blonde locks that were splayed out in a golden halo and breathed in deep, taking in the warm scent of the lilac candle that burnt on her night side table.
All her worries melted away at JJ’s touch. Emily’s brain was filled with the feeling of JJ’s lips on hers, with her lithe form beneath her. Exams, student politics and thoughts of home were wiped away, and her stress faded into background noise.
JJ’s pliant form writhed under Emily’s, her hands sneaking below Emily’s sweater and dancing over her back. They deepened the kiss until they were making out like teenagers in JJ’s dorm with the door still open a crack.
This was how Spencer, accompanied by Derek, found them when they pushed open the door with blanket fort blueprints and bags of potato chips in hand.
Spencer made a surprised noise, which made Emily aware of his return. She jumped up and pulled apart from JJ with a dark red blush gracing her cheeks.
“Woah there ladies,” Derek said with a laugh. “Keep it in your pants!”
“Guys! I was gone for five minutes!” Spencer whined.
Emily stood up awkwardly, stuffing her hands in her pockets as she watched JJ sit up and pat her hair down in a huff.
“Sorry,” Emily grumbled, not really meaning it. She would never be sorry for kissing JJ, but she was sorry for the awkwardness
“Pretty boy dragged me down the hall,” Derek said in explanation. He had Spencer’s rolled-up fort plans in his hand, and lightly smacked Emily’s head with it, making a comedic thwap noise as it made contact. “Hope you weren’t in the middle of something?”
“Only JJ’s legs,” Emily quipped to everyone’s surprise, even her own. JJ hit her jokingly and blushed.
“Hey!” Derek laughed, “Let’s keep this PG!”
“You called?” The voice of Penelope Garcia—PG if you will—rang out from the hallway, and within seconds JJ’s room was filled with just about all their friends standing around in a slightly awkward silence: JJ, Emily, Spencer and Derek were joined by Penelope with Hotch in tow.
The latter two of them had grown closer recently and walked into the room with white shopping bags with the walrus logo printed on the side, looking like they had just returned from out in the cold. Penelope and Hotch going thrifting together, that’s new! Emily thought to herself and decided to file the observation for later. The image of Hotch watching Penelope’s customary fashion show was enough to make her laugh under her breath.
“We’re building a blanket fort,” Spencer announced, changing the subject to the task at hand. “Are you guys helping?”
“Oh you know I will, boy genius,” Penelope said with an excited smile.
Emily looked over to her girlfriend. So much for date night.
———
Without much questioning about why they were building a blanket fort, the team got to work. In college, sometimes things just happened. Impromptu blanket forts were par the course. In their defense, any excuse to not spend the evening burying their heads in textbooks was a welcome reprieve.
It started with just a few blankets draped in the space between JJ and Penelope’s beds, but with Spencer’s instruction, a verifiable architectural marvel began to take shape.
While Emily knew that Penelope would be all gung ho for this sort of project, it was certainly amusing to see Hotch in his khakis and dress shirt crawling around on the floor like a child with the rest of them, tying off blankets and very seriously maneuvering the different parts of the structure.
Sheets were draped here and there, tied together to form ceilings and walls. Two chairs stolen from the common room, loaded with backpacks on the seat for support acted as the entrance to the fort.
While it was crawling space only, Emily had to note that there was a sense of awe when you emerged into the open space of the main fort-area. It was surprisingly big, fitting all six of them with ease. The key to the whole design was a curtain rod Hotch had stolen from the boys shower that lifted the roof up.
The design was strangely reminiscent of Baroque architecture, which she was sure was due to Spencer’s designs. This was a fact that Emily kept to herself. She always tried to rein in the ‘I lived abroad’ conversation points so her childhood could remain under minimal scrutiny.
Emily’s exhaustion transformed into excitement as she relished the time hanging out with her friends. Music played from Penelope’s computer as they worked, they began to work as a cohesive group, each member doing their share. It was nice to do something besides sit at her desk and obsess over memorizing facts and statistics, or figuring out the proper argumentation for an essay on a subject. Making sure that a bunch of blankets didn’t crash onto them was treated with the utmost seriousness, and the whole group was focused with intense concentration at their own tasks.
Spencer did, in fact, have literal sketches of blanket forts in his notebooks, but the details of which were fairly incomprehensible to her. While she believed that he did the math, his chicken scratch was just about indecipherable, and his drawing was little more than a few shapes on a page. Despite this, it was laid out on the centre of the dorm-room floor for them to reference.
At one point, as Emily stood on JJ’s wheely chair, she feared that the fort had all come crashing down as she lost her balance and grabbed at the blankets to stop her fall before tumbling onto Derek with a yelp.
“Sorry,” she muttered as she climbed back onto her feet and fought off the blanket that had wrapped her in a shroud.
She flinched as she realized she had ruined it all, a pit forming in her stomach. She looked at her friends in concern, but instead of yelling at her for her mistake, or shunning her for ruining it for the rest of them, they smiled at her and helped her up.
“It’s okay!” Spencer said cheerfully. “I know exactly how to reinforce that wall.”
“You okay, Emily?” Hotch asked, righting the wheely chair as JJ fretted over her.
“I’m good,” she answered, still confused as to why they weren’t mad at her.
Instead of making a big deal over the set back, they went back to work. Soon, the fort filled out and it returned to its former glory. Arguably, better than it was because they had draped fairy lights throughout the inside, making the space glow with a warm orange light.
Inside was filled with pillows and big enough for all of them to sit comfortably so it was a comfy lounge space. It was cozy and warm, the antithesis of the bitterly cold night air outside.
“You know what?” Hotch said. “This is a damned good fort, Reid.”
The group muttered in consensus. They all had piled into the space, and as the excitement wore off, Emily was wondering what happened next. What does one do in a blanket fort? She had vague memories of building one in her room, but she had just sat inside and read a book.
“I hear the RA’s storage room has a ton of board games,” Penelope said. “They pull them out for socials and stuff.”
“That’s all well and good, but we’re not asking Strauss to let us in,” Derek argued. “I still think she thinks we were responsible for that fire alarm last week. She’s been giving me the evil eye ever since.”
“Who said we had to tell her?” Emily said. “We could just… borrow… them…”
“I mean, they are for us to use, anyway.” JJ’s eyes had a mischievous look in them as she looked at Emily.
“That is true,” Hotch said, the scowl that was usually a fixture on his face turning to a smirk.
“That’s stealing, guys,” Spencer warned, as if they didn’t already know that.
“We’ll give them back,” Emily said with a shrug. “Come on!”
Penelope led the way to a dark wooden door on the main floor, it was labelled simply “Storage,” but the computer science student assured them that it was where the RA’s stored all of their supplies.
“It’s locked,” Penelope huffed.
“Do you have a bobby pin?” Emily asked her in a hushed voice. She wouldn’t have gotten this far if she hadn’t learned how to pick simple door locks. She had trouble with deadbolts but a simple latch she could probably do within a couple of minutes.
The blonde pulled a hot pink bobby pin out of her perfectly curled hair. Emily snapped it into two, bending one end into a longer L-shape. Sticking that into the bottom of the lock and holding it in place, she used the other side to feel for the pins that held the lock in place.
Emily could feel all eyes on her as she confidently knelt in front of the doorknob, the group keeping watch for her as she worked. No one questioned how or why Emily knew how to do this. She had her reasons.
This definitely broke all sorts of residence rules and if they got caught, they knew they’d get into shit, but no one seemed to care that much. They just wouldn’t get caught.
After a couple minutes, Emily’s hands began to sweat. What if she couldn’t do this anymore? She tried to centre herself. She had made it through infinitely more stressful situations in the past. It was the eyes of her friends on her that made her nervous. She was finally accepted by a group, and she desperately didn’t want to let them down.
Then, it clicked, and she was able to turn the brass knob easily. Emily made a noise of excitement, got to her feet and yanked the door open.
Instead of an empty storage closet, on the other side of the door was Erin Strauss, their RA, in a passionate embrace with David Rossi. Her shirt was unbuttoned and he was in the middle of sucking on her neck.
“Dave?!” Hotch called out, startling the couple.
Both groups stood stock-still, neither knowing what to say. While Emily had hid the bobby pins, she wasn’t sure who was in more trouble, them for breaking into the room or their RA for using the space for unofficial purposes.
The room was small and cramped, with a pile of poster board mostly obscuring the one small window that lit the space. Strauss had been hoisted onto the desk, her legs straddling the other student. Emily could see a shelf filled with the board games stacked on the left side of the room, but they seemed unimportant at the moment. While Emily had known about their illicit love affair, she had never expected to see it in action.
“Hey guys,” Rossi said after a moment, his unwavering confidence carrying on to this moment as he pulled apart from Strauss, who was furiously buttoning up her shirt and trying to sort herself out.
“What are you all doing in here?” she demanded, standing up and putting her hands on her hips. “This room’s meant for RA’s only.”
“Well,” Emily said, startled by her own audacity, “Dave isn’t an RA so…”
“We just came for some board games,” JJ said in her most diplomatic voice, despite clearly wanting to laugh at the situation, “then we’ll be off.”
“Take them and go,” the RA said in a strangled voice, her face beet-red and as she avoided eye contact like it was the plague.
Clearly not as embarrassed as Strauss, Rossi simply smirked, collected a few board games into his arms off of the shelf, then deposited them into Emily’s arms.
Realizing that given the circumstances, they couldn’t be picky with their choices, the stunned group thanked him then scurried away, back upstairs with their loot. The silence remained until they made it back to their floor, where they all burst into laughter.
“What on earth was that?!” Derek exclaimed.
“Rossi and Strauss,” Spencer muttered.
Emily and JJ made eye contact, remembering all those weeks ago when they had caught their friend emerging from the RA’s room down the hall in the middle of the night. They had known that Rossi and Strauss had hooked up that night, but had no idea that it was a whole relationship.
“I see it,” Hotch commented. “I mean, I don’t know your RA too well, but Rossi likes a woman with authority.”
Derek and Emily fake-gagged in an exaggerated manner at the comment.
“I think I need to bleach my eyeballs after that display,” Emily muttered.
“Ooo-kay!” JJ said, pointedly changing the subject. “It seems like we have most of the pieces to Clue… I think we could manage a game of that. We also have Scrabble, Yahtzee and Snakes and Ladders. Uh… also a pack of cards.”
“At least it’s not chess,” Emily said, thinking about her seemingly endless exam that afternoon.
“Agreed,” Spencer said.
“We do not have chess, no,” JJ said with a quizzical laugh.
———
After ordering a couple of pizzas to the dorm, they all settled in to play a board game. After a few minutes of debate, they decided to play Clue (or Cluedo as Emily continuously referred to it as). The board was laid out: it was vintage, with a teal and yellow colour scheme and some scuffs and rips showing its age. In their blanket fort, they were seated in a circle, all secretly looking at their Clue cards.
“Can I be Professor Plum?” Spencer asked before they had even gotten the pieces out of the box.
“Of course pretty boy,” Derek said, “I’ll take Mr. Green.”
“My sculpted god of thunder looks excellent in green,” Penelope flirted, choosing the white piece for herself.
“Did you know that in the original version of Clue, Mr Green was a Reverend, but they changed his name for American audience because they believed that the American public would object to a parson as a murder suspect?”
“Good thing you’re on our trivia team, Reid,” Hotch replied.
Emily was Miss Scarlet, of course, and was seated right next to JJ, who had chosen to portray Mrs. Peacock. Hotch claimed the remaining piece: Colonel Mustard.
Emily loved board games. Her nanny in France, who was a kindly elderly woman that Emily only knew as “Madame,” would play with her each Sunday after church. She has hazy memories from that time, but the warm glow of sunlight streaming into their Parisian apartment as she learned how to play Cluedo. Emily would always try to cheat, but knew better than to try to do so with her immensely observant girlfriend seated to her left, JJ’s hand resting casually on Emily’s thigh.
She looked at her cards and grinned. She had been dealt her own character, she noted, as Miss Scarlet’s name was printed in bold on the top of her first card. It felt weirdly validating to know that she herself was innocent. Also in her hands were the cards for the candlestick and pistol, as well as the observatory. She marked these off of her card and tried to gauge her opponents' reactions.
JJ was checking her phone with her cards face down, tracking the pizza’s arrival. Spencer was sprawled back, his long legs taking up way more room than was necessary, jotting down notes on some scrap paper. Presumably some statistics and probability for the possibilities of the cards that were sealed in the envelope in the centre of the board. Penelope smiled over at Derek and flirtatiously tried to sneak a peek at his hand.
After the initial rounds being dedicated to moving around the board, Emily finally made it into her first room: the lounge. There, she decided on her first suggestion.
“I suggest,” Emily said, in her most dramatic, formal voice, which was particularly suited to the role of Miss Scarlet, “that Mrs. Peacock committed this heinous crime in the Lounge with-” she hurriedly grabbed the candlestick, “the candlestick!”
She knew that it wasn’t the correct weapon, but using it would narrow it down to someone ruling out either JJ’s character or the lounge as the scene of the crime.
“Moi?!” JJ said, sounding almost offended at the accusation. “Your own girlfriend?!”
Emily grinned evilly at her, but internally she felt giddy. It was the first time she heard JJ use that word in front of their friends. JJ moved her piece into the Lounge. The others chuckled lightly at their antics.
“You have no alibi for the crime, Mrs. Peacock,” Emily said, “and I am merely making a suggestion.”
JJ glared at her, but said nothing. Emily turned to Derek, who was seated at her left.
“What do I do?” Derek asked, looking around the room, slightly confused.
“Do you have any of those cards?” Hotch asked.
“Yeah-” Derek said, moving to show his hand.
“No!” Penelope stopped him. “Just show one of your cards to Emily if you can prove her suggestion was wrong.”
He made an “o” with his mouth and sneakily showed Emily the Lounge card. Emily noted that, and that it was Derek’s card. Mrs. Peacock had yet to be proven innocent, and Emily gave JJ a suspicious glance.
She loved this game.
As the game progressed, Emily noted a few things about her opponents. A part of Emily was profiling her friends subconsciously, reading each of their strategies like a book.
Penelope always seemed to luck out on her dice rolls, covering a lot of terrain and gathering information like it was a cup of tea. But, she seemed to take it personally when someone accused Mrs. White of having killed Mr. Boddy and gasped every time someone made that suggestion.
Hotch seemed to take the game very seriously, and was at it like he was an actual police officer solving crime. But, it didn’t seem that he completely understood all of the rules, and definitely hadn’t played before, so he spent most of his turn grumbling as he skimmed the rule pamphlet.
Spencer, on the other hand, had memorized the rules, common strategies and probabilities of the different outcomes, so Hotch often looked over to him nervously as the boy wrote longhand equations in the notebook that he pulled out of his bag for the very occasion.
Derek also had never played before, and regularly made ‘accusations’ rather than ‘suggestions’ when he entered a room, frustrating Spencer to no end. But, Derek was smart and seemed to be picking it up as he went along. That was until he made the same suggestion twice in a row, both times making Hotch show him the exact same card. He asked Reid endless questions about specific rules, and more than once he made the boy double check in the rule book when Derek tried to make a rather unorthodox move.
JJ seemed to be the only one genuinely trying to have fun. She munched on the Cheetos that she stored in the bottom drawer of her night stand, and made conversation. Her strategy seemed to be exclusively focused on playing the game like it was the 1985 feature film Clue, playing the role of Mrs. Peacock with a fake accent and treating it like an actual murder-filled dinner party.
After a solid twenty minutes of gameplay, the pizza arrived. With minimal grumbling from Hotch, who was apparently on a roll, they took a break to eat.
“Did you see this?” Spencer said with his mouth full, lifting up the copy of the newspaper that he had grabbed earlier.
“Don’t get me started,” JJ grumbled and took a sip of her pop.
“What happened?” Hotch asked, the conversation piquing his interest.
Spencer explained—with the assistance of JJ who apparently knew one of the people involved through soccer—the entire scandal. Apparently, last year there had been very little interest in the leadership roles, so the President of the student government had simply waltzed into his role. He then hired all of his friends, his girlfriend, his roommate, and together they embezzled thousands of dollars of student funds.
“I can’t believe they’re getting away with this,” JJ muttered. “Is there no oversight?”
“It’s always the same,” Emily replied. “Who’s going to oversee them? The college? They’re corrupt too.”
“This sucks,” Derek said. “Wish someone good would run for government, for once.”
Emily shook her head in frustration. It all just reminded her of her childhood. Embezzlement, corruption and nepotism all were casual topics discussed over family dinner in her home. She had higher hopes for students her own age, would they not break the cycle? Or was it just a microcosm of the outside world?
“You should run Mr. Lawyer Man,” Penelope teased Hotch. “You could take any of these clowns.”
Hotch raised an eyebrow at her and went back to his pizza, brushing her off. Emily smiled at him. Penelope was right, he might actually do a good job if he set his mind to it.
The people that surrounded her now were nothing like her mother’s friends—or the kids she had been forced to hang out with when she was younger—they were genuinely kind, supportive, and seemed to like Emily for Emily. When she told them she was an ambassador’s daughter, they had been more concerned with the cool places that she had been able to travel to than whatever power she had. At college, Emily finally exhaled fully, slowly relaxing more and more into herself.
But, the topic of politics always set her on edge, especially since the semester was ending soon. Her mother had already begun to leave her voicemails about the galas, fundraisers and events that she was required to attend over Christmas break. She pushed thoughts of the future aside and focused on the warmth that surrounded her. With some music playing softly (a song that JJ liked by Vampire Weekend), the softness of blankets under her, and JJ leaning on her slightly as she ate her dinner, Emily felt at peace. She knew she could handle winter break, because she knew that these friends would be here when she came back.
After years of leaving a school midway through the year only to show up to some new boarding school or international school each time her mom was reassigned, Emily never had a chance to put down roots. But, with each bite of pizza, Emily felt herself becoming even more firmly rooted. Not to this place, but to these people as their lives became more entwined.
Once dinner was over, the game continued, and thoughts of politics left their minds. By then, Emily narrowed it down to the weapon (the candlestick), two rooms (the kitchen and the billiard room) and she was pretty sure that it was Colonel Mustard that had committed the crime.
She had a decision to make: walk all the way from the study to the billiard room, or risk being wrong by making an accusation. She was pretty sure both Hotch and Reid were on the right track, as the younger boy’s scribbling in his notebook had gotten even more intense and the older boy was beginning to look around suspiciously, as if the others were trying to read his notes.
She had pretty much ruled out Penelope, JJ and Derek as competitors, as the trio spent most of the time talking, and genuinely trying to have fun. Emily, Reid and Hotch were all way too into it, but Emily was competitive and this was her game. She wasn’t going to lose to Hotch, no way. Reid winning she could blame on his boy-genius nature, but Emily decided that Hotch was going down.
The two boys seemed to have come to the same conclusion, all eyeing each other across the board, the tension palatable between them as their competition became heated.
She nervously tried to move to the billiards room, deciding to play it safe. Better safe than disqualified. But, as soon as she made that decision, she regretted it as Spencer straightened up on his turn and said: “I’d like to make my accusation.”
“Write it down,” JJ prompted, as per the rules. He jotted it down in his paper.
Then, with bated breath, they watched as he grabbed the envelope out of the centre of the board, and read the cards. His face fell when he saw one of the cards, so he must have been wrong. He placed them back into their envelope and back onto the board.
“No dice?” Emily asked.
He shook his head.
“Statistically speaking that should have been right,” he grumbled. “My math was wrong.”
“Boy genius isn’t a good detective, huh?” Penelope mused.
A few turns went by, with Derek, Penelope, and JJ moving around the board or making suggestions.
Emily rolled the dice, making one square from a room. She sighed. She’d make a suggestion next round.
On Hotch’s next turn, he made an accusation, which he wrote down on a pink sticky note that Penelope had handed out when the game started. He checked the envelope.
Emily held her breath. She was sure he had it and that the game was over. She should just call it quits now. She went to bite her nails out of stress, but stopped herself, they were starting to get long and she wanted them to look nice.
A moment passed as Hotch compared his cards. After he saw the third card in the envelope, his expression revealed that was also wrong.
Boys, Emily thought. Always so overconfident.
She made a suggestion instead of risking it: “Miss Scarlet—er myself I guess— in the Billiards Room with the pistol.”
It was a gamble. If she was right, and the people who knew she had her own card and the pistol caught on, they would also know that it was the Billiard Room, because no one would be able to disprove her theory. If she was wrong, someone would have the card for that room, and she would know that the crime occured in the Kitchen.
The second seemed to be true, as Derek showed her his card with a small illustrated image of the Billiard Room on it. She was right. She knew what it was. But, she would have to wait until her next turn. She was going to win.
But, it was she who was overconfident, because as she was too busy preemptively celebrating her win, Derek casually made his accusation.
“Hey I’m right!” he exclaimed, holding up the cards and his own hot pink sticky note.
In his semi-cursive scrawl read: “Colonel Mustard, Candlestick, Kitchen.” These guesses matched the cards hidden in the envelope, and Emily’s own deduction that she planned to make on her own turn.
“You guys really thought I hadn’t played this game before?” Derek laughed. “I’ve got two sisters, board games were everything.”
“Were you hustling us, Morgan?” Spencer demanded.
He smirked.
“Should’ve put money on the outcome,” Derek said with a laugh. “I’d be rich.”
Emily threw her cards onto the table in defeat. JJ shot her an empathetic look, and Emily tried to stuff her frustration down to pat her friend on the back for the surprising win. He deserved it.
———
After the game concluded and the pizza had been completely eaten, the group parted ways, heading to bed, or for more midnight snacks or to finish up some studying, leaving JJ and Emily alone and to start? a game of Scrabble.
The board was ancient, and quite a few letters were missing, but with music droning on JJ’s laptop, and the soft fairy lights overhead, neither girl minded too much.
Emily looked at her letters:  O, B, S, O, T, B, W and thought hard, rearranging the wooden pieces to try and formulate a word. After a long day of academia, and investing so heavily into the game of Clue, she probably had only one or two working brain cells and both were telling her to play the word ‘boobs.’
Her eyes flicked to her girlfriend, who looked absolutely gorgeous in the warm light. Her blonde hair almost glowed, and she had an adorable expression on her face. Emily couldn’t help but glance lower, thinking about the real world examples of her Scrabble word.
She played the word with a cheeky grin.
“‘Boobs,’ Emily?” JJ scolded. “Really?”
She sounded angry, but there was a hint of a smile tugging at her cheeks and Emily could tell the girl found it funny.
“I can’t help it,” Emily said. “I haven’t thought of much else since last weekend.”
She raised and lowered her eyebrows in an exaggerated manner, making JJ laugh and kick her lightly in protest.
JJ then played the word ‘throw,’ using the ‘o’ from ‘boobs’ to form her word, earning her thirteen points.
“I don’t think you can throw boobs, babe,” Emily said. “They’re usually attached.”
JJ rolled her eyes.
Emily made it her mission to find the funniest words possible, working extra hard (and missing out on some good points) in an effort to make JJ laugh. ‘Armpit,’ ‘meaty,’ ‘hoagie,’ ‘urine,’ ‘joint’ and her piece de resistance: ‘boner.’ All while JJ was playing incredibly normal, and often strategic words like ‘axis,’ ‘snow,’ ‘vain,’ ‘snag’ and ‘writings,’ hitting multiple double- and triple word scores on the way.
“This is fun,” Emily said, sneaking a handful of JJ’s Cheetos out of the family-sized bag next to the blonde, while she was distracted by playing her turn.
“I don’t understand how you’re winning,” JJ muttered.
Emily shrugged, “Guess I’m just a genius.”
“Reid? Is that you?” JJ joked. “Why are you disguised as my girlfriend?”
“Would Reid do this?” Emily said, leaning over toward her girlfriend and pressing kisses all over her face until she fell back. Then Emily straddled her, their lips meeting in a passionate embrace that left both girls panting.
“I would hope not!” JJ exclaimed with a laugh, making a face at the thought.
They laughed and went back to making out, with Emily careful not to disturb the game pieces. JJ sucked onto Emily’s bottom lip, making her weak in the knees and she struggled to support herself over JJ’s shorter frame at the motion.
“We should-” Emily tried to say between kisses, “finish the game.”
JJ kept deepening the kiss, going so far as to grab onto Emily’s butt to hold her in place on top of her.
“You’re trying to distract me,” Emily chided, “because I’m winning! I see right through your plot.”
She sat up and went back to her tiles before playing another funny word: ‘suck’ for twenty points. JJ grumbled, fiddling with her own tiles, as Emily collected a few out of the bag.
Emily was preening as she rearranged her own tiles and didn’t notice as JJ put down her word. When she went to play her next word (‘zap’) and only then did she see what word JJ played.
‘Love.’
It was there. Clear as day. Written vertically and connected to the word ‘snow,’ it was unmistakable. Emily looked at it for a long moment, trying to figure out what it could possibly mean that her girlfriend very intentionally played such a loaded word. Was it the only word that fit? Did she only mean that she loved the snow? Was she also reading into it?
Emily looked up, making eye contact with JJ. The blonde blushed and looked away, nervously fiddling with the necklace around her neck. Emily smiled faintly at the warmth that flooded through her, but alongside that, was the sharp pang of anxiety. Was she supposed to acknowledge that? Would that make it weird?
‘Zap’ didn’t feel appropriate when her girlfriend may or may not have confessed her love for her.
She played it anyway, deciding that making a big deal of it would just complicate matters. Besides, did she love JJ? She didn’t know. It was all so new. She liked JJ a lot. She definitely like-liked her in the traditional sense of the world. But Emily had never been in love before. She’d loved people before, Matthew for one, and her mother in a way, and she loved Derek like a brother. But being in love was a whole ‘nother ball game.
JJ won the game after playing ‘equinox’ for twenty two points near the end, beating any lead Emily had gained from her silly words. JJ deserved it in the end, as the blonde would sit and stare at her letters until they formed the most complex words that Emily had never even heard of. Emily’s eyes drooped and she was barely able to create three letter words by the end, while JJ was still surprising her with her vocabulary.
Emily shook JJ’s hand to congratulate her for the win. JJ grinned and kissed her.
Then, they looked around and realized two things: it was past one in the morning and Penelope hadn’t come back to the room yet and that all of the blankets that JJ owned were currently being used in the blanket fort.
“Can we sleep in my bed, tonight?” Emily asked. “I’ll help you clean up in the morning.”
JJ nodded but was in the middle of texting Penelope, wondering where on earth her roommate had wandered off to. Within a minute she got back to JJ saying: with derek! will explain tmrw!! 😘 🧚‍♀️ 😳
JJ showed Emily the message and both girls giggled. Emily saw that coming, but didn’t realize it would be a game of Clue that finally sealed the deal.
Exhausted but happy and relaxed after the game night, Emily and JJ tumbled into Emily’s bed and cuddled up together. Between JJ and Emily, the word ‘love’ was left unsaid that night, but Emily fell asleep that night feeling a new warmth in her chest.

in honor of finals week
Saki sighed as she set her pen down. She had been taking notes for what feels like hours and her vision was starting to get blurry. She wondered if this was what every finals season was like for Sae, and if so she sympathized with her fellow triplet a lot more. Saki wasn’t usually like this during finals season. While her classes were hard and they did require her to look over her notes a couple times, she usually could do well on a final without having to do much studying. But she was a second year now, and her classes had gotten a lot harder fast. On her other exams this semester, she had struggled more than she usually did, leaving her in an uncomfortable place for grades. So it was important she did well on her finals. She only really had to worry about two, an advanced organic chemistry class and her linear algebra and differential equations class. She had C’s in both of the classes, and she really did not want to have that in her GPA. So she had taken to studying as much as she possibly could.
It seemed both her sisters felt the same way towards their second ear of college. All of them had classes they were struggling in, and even Saya had been studying a lot. None of their significant others had come over in days and their apartment was quieter than it had ever been. Saki was sort of thankful she was able to focus, but she did also just miss the noise of having other people living with her.
Her thoughts were interrupted when the doorbell rang. She was a bit confused, none of them had been bringing anyone over on account of how much studying was going on. She thought maybe Saya had finally broken and asked Yujin to come over, but when she got a text from Saya telling her to answer it since she was watching a lecture, she realized it probably wasn’t Yujin. Saki got up and went to the front door, opening it slowly. “Mom?” Saki was surprised to see her mom standing there. Her Ka-san was there too, holding Nico in her arms. “Hey Saki-chan. We were doing some errands around here and decided to bring you guys some dinner. Sae told us you and Saya have been studying a lot, we wanted to reward you.” Sana smiled, holding up a bag of food. “Sae too, but she always studies a lot.”
“It’s bad this time. I haven’t seen her in two days and we’ve been in the same apartment the entire time.” Saki moved aside to let her parents in. “No mama?” “She got tied up at work. She said she might come by later and bring you guys some ice cream.” Mina answered.
“Saki Unnie!” Nico excitedly bounced in Mina’s arms when she saw her. The four year old was holding something in her hands, but Saki couldn't tell what.”This is for you.” Nico handed over what was in her hand, and Saki found that it was a kit-kat.
“Oh thanks Nico.” Saki was a bit confused at the present, but she figured since Nico was a toddler she would think candy was the best gift in the world. “We were telling Nico how in Japan, it’s supposed to be goodluck to receive a kit-kat while you are studying for exams.” Sana explained. “Nico wanted to bring you all a kit-kat because of that.” “Oh thank you Nico.” Saki pat Nico’s head. Nico giggled at the affection and leaned into it. “Do good on your test!” Nico smiled at her. “You will. Saki Unnie is super smart.” “Thanks kiddo, but the tests are going to be pretty hard. Unnie is going to have to study a lot to do good.” Saki explained. “Why don’t you go give Sae and Saya their candy?” Nico nodded, tapping Mina to let her down and running off.
“We thought you guys would be hungry. We brought lots.” Sana smiled as she set the food down on their kitchen counter. “What did you get?” Saki asked, looking at the bags curiously. “Italian. We know you love it.” Mina giggled. “We brought enough for you guys to have some meals throughout the week. Have you been eating properly?” “Of course-” Saki was interrupted by her stomach growling loudly. “No, none of us have.” Sae sighed in defeat. “We’ve mainly just been eating ramen and rice bowls from the cafeteria. None of us like the rice bowls, but hey they are easy and it’s an excuse to leave our rooms. Eunji and I have been a couple times this week.” “How is Eunji?” “She’s a bit better, most of her finals are presentations so she’s had less textbook reading and more memorization.” Saki explained, moving to grab a plate and get some food. “You should text Eunji to come over. We got enough food for her too.” Sana hummed, moving to get all of the kids some water glasses. “Are you sure?” Saki asked.
“We haven’t seen her in a while. Plus, Momo and Jihyo would love that we fed her. We always worry you guys aren’t eating enough.” Sana explained.
“I’ll text her. She might be busy.” Saki nodded. She arranged the take out boxes to be buffet style, her mouth watering at the first sign of real food. It had been days of sad rice bowls and instant ramen, and she was more than ready for some real food. All three of them fell into a comfortable silence until they heard Nico squealing down the hall.
“Oh, she got to Saya.” Saki rolled her eyes while she put some pasta on her plate. “Come back here!” They were barely able to process Nico running past them until they saw Saya. “No!” Nico giggled, hiding behind Saki’s legs.
“Nico baby, no running inside.” Mina reminded.
“Okay.” “Oh there’s food!” Saya’s demeanor instantly changed. “Yup we brought you all dinner, figured you would all want some real food.” Mina giggled at her daughter.
“Thank you, this is a godsend.” Saya used Nico’s distraction from trying to keep up with their conversation to pick the toddler up. “Got you.” “Saya Unnie!” Nico giggled. “You gave Sae her candy, why won’t you give me my candy?” Saya whined. “I was going to. But Ka-san says no candy before dinner.” Nico answered. “What, you gave Sae hers?” “Sae Unnie won’t eat candy before dinner.” Nico shrugged. “Saya don’t tease your sister too much. Why don’t you get yourself some food?” Sana interrupted the two, gently grabbing Nico out of Saya’s arms. “Come here Nico-chan, let’s make you a plate so you can eat with Unnie’s.” “Okay.” Nico hummed. Sae came out of her room a few moments later, her hair a mess and bags under her eyes. “Hey.” Sae greeted. “Hi baby girl. Tired?” Sana giggled at her daughter’s appearance. “A bit.” Sae shrugged.
“Remember to get some rest okay Sae? And if you need any help I’m glad to come by and try to help.” Mina couldn’t stop herself from hugging Sae. Sae was only slightly shorter than her, but every time she hugged her daughter, it was like the first time.
“Okay.” Sae yawned. “That goes for you three too, proper sleep and proper rest will go a long way.” “Yes ma’am.” The girls all sounded annoyed, but in reality, they knew they had the best parents in the world.

Break My Heart- chapter 20
Fandom: From Blood & Ash | ch21
TW: None yet.
Summary: What happens when the star quarterback of Atlantia High School grows an interest towards the shy, adorable but smart girl in his grade? Come and join Hawke and Poppy on this rollercoaster of emotions.
a/n: this chapter is just *chef's kiss*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next weeks were the best time of my life.
Today was our last exam and I was waiting for Hawke in my car in the school parking lot.
When he came inside, I started the car and said,
"We're going out today."
He frowned, "We are?"
I nodded, "Yep. Last time you took me, it's my turn now."
He took my hand from gearstick and kissed my knuckles.
"Okay, but where are we going?"
I smirked, "You'll see."
He had a suggestive smile on his face showcasing his dimples, "Copying me now, are we?"
I scoffed, "Maybe."
When we reached our destination, Hawke had a confused look and I wondered if I looked like that when he took me out.
I just held his hand and kept walking. After lots of turns, walking in narrow alleyways and loads of questions we finally reached a book shop.
I dragged him inside and then laughed at the awed look he had on his face.
"C'mon I know you love reading that's why brought you here."
I found that book shop accidentally when I was trying to reach home early from grocery shopping.
The book shop itself had three floors and so many books that a lifetime would be less for a person to read everything there. Quotes hung over the walls and there were spiral staircases to reach the upper levels.
It reminded me of him.
He babbled, "Oh my God- how did you even- this is insane,"
I laughed and shut him up by kissing him.
I took both of his hands and walked opposite, "Now go and choose whatever you want. I am coming behind you,"
He was still muttering under his breath and I had to practically push him to go.
Suffice to say the whole day went with him explaining all the stuff he saw, adding his opinion in between and me listening intently.
And also, I was practically broke. He insisted paying for the books but I gave him the scary look and bought the full bag of books for him.
After that, I took him to a flower field where I had spread a sheet under an enormous tree and a picnic basket lay atop it and asked him to read me one of the books we bought.
While I made a crown of flowers, he narrated the story. And by the end I had decorated him in jewellery of flowers.
He was practically glowing with happiness.
"I hope you enjoyed today,"
"I absolutely loved it," he kissed me.
I love you.
But of course, I didn't dare say those words just yet.
And how could I ever forget this:
"Honey, I'm home!"
I fell off the couch where Hawke and I were previously making out.
"Shit, mom's home early!'
We quickly scrambled opposite each other and tried make ourselves look as if we weren't sucking each other's faces off few seconds ago.
Mom entered the living room and stopped after seeing Hawke there.
I waved a little uncertainly, "Hey mom."
But Hawke saved the day and walked with such a confidence towards her that to say I was shock would be an understatement.
"Mrs. Balfour, I'm Casteel. Poppy's boyfriend."
Mom eyed him appreciatively and shook his outstretched hand.
"Poppy has told us about you. It's nice to finally meet you. Would you like to stay for dinner today?"
I thought dinner would be a disaster but surprisingly it went really good. My dad and Hawke bonded over football and mom gave me an appraising nod.
As I said earlier, best weeks of my life.
And now here I was, technically the whole school was here at the bleachers since it was season's one of the most important football match, but my whole focus was on the guy wearing jersey number twelve.
We tied up with the other school, but nonetheless one of the students had organized an after-match party.
I was waiting outside near my car and Hawke came towards me after freshly showering.
I gave him a hug and peck on cheek, "You did amazing today. I'm proud of you."
He nuzzled his head in the crook of my neck and tightened his hold, "Thankyou."
After seating ourselves in my car he asked me, "Do you want to go to the after-party?"
I took a left turn, "Do you want to? I mean the decision is up to you because you might be tired after playing."
He shook his head, "Nah, I'm good. I think it will be bit refreshing. What about you?"
I stopped at red light, "Okay, we'll go then. But I'm not changing my clothes."
He clicked his tongue, "Should I? Never mind I forgot I just showered."
I chuckled at him and pressed the accelerator when the light turned green.

Ask Me Again - oneshot

monnie's @ "To Your Heart"
hello! this is our first book of The Pasta Chronicles! i'm so glad @monscastle was able to collab with me; also shoutout to monnie for the lovely banner~ ♡
“Go out with me.”
Lee Felix, the campus bad boy, asked you out. Again. It was a weekly occurrence: him asking you; you saying no as politely as possible.
He never stuttered his words. Not the first time and certainly not today. “Go out with me, y/n. Please.”
It sounded like a plea for you. But his voice never wavered. It kept you in reality that he was a player, and you were an ideal student. Not the best but better than him.
“Felix, I’m sorry. I can’t. Not with exams coming up,” you replied with a soft smile while stepping past the boy. You were lucky to find a real enough excuse. He dug his heels into the cement path and followed you-- an action you couldn’t fail to notice.
“Gosh, he’s a real stickler, huh?” Your roommate, Lea, quietly reminded you.
“After exams, y/n.” Felix sped up to stand in front of you, stopping your pace altogether. “I’ll wait ‘til exams are over.” He leaned forward and pecked the sweetest, gentlest kiss on your temple. He smirked at your blushed reaction before skipping back to his crowd.
“Well, I guess he won’t bother you for a bit.” Lea started walking again.
You bit your lip, mind still focused on how warm, how sweet, his lips felt on your skin. It made your heartbeat quicken; the thought of his lips on yours sent a nice, tingly flow throughout your body.
“Y/n.”
‘H-huh?” Lea snapped you out of your daydream.
“He won’t bother you for a bit.” She hooked her arm with yours and happily continued to your next lecture. “Now, you can put 110% into your grades.”
“I’m glad,” you faked a smile. Lea endlessly went on about her thesis book. Her words served as white noise to you though.
Honestly, you liked Felix. There was no doubt about it. He was courteous towards his professors. It was rare for him to turn in an assignment, but he was studious in class and never interrupted the professors or classmates.
He was kind and respectful, despite his liaisons with countless ladies on campus. When they came and begged to date him, he was thoughtful with his words. He never said no, but he never said yes. A handful of guys would ask him out as well, but Felix stuck to his words. He had a rule. No getting together, no relationships. No romance. Just a quick fuck. And everyone knew this. “Having strings ties you down. And I don’t see myself tied with you,” he had said, in the lightest way possible.
You haven’t slept with him, yet you knew he held a fragile piece of your heart. He was your fantasy. A dream. Nothing more. But it never hurts to dream.
Your mind stopped wandering when Lea opened the lecture hall door. As you entered, you were met with hateful glares from the students.
“Y/n. Lea. I saved you a seat.” Jackson’s deep voice startled you. Lea shuffled the pair of you through the isle and to the row Jackson was sitting in.
“Gosh, what the heck was that for? Is there something on my face, y/n?” Lea worried.
“No, Lea. You look beautiful as ever.”
She beamed back at you.
“Look.” Jackson held up his phone, allowing Lea and you to watch an Instagram story. It was you. Specifically, Felix kissing your temple.
Lea sighed. Someone had filmed the “intimate” moment you had with Felix. You read the words at the bottom of the post: ‘Another whore for Lix?’
You deserved this. It was karma coming to get you for the thoughts you had of the boy. You mindlessly reached your fingertips to where he kissed your skin. Why was he even attracted to you? Were you a dare? A dare for him to get in your pants? You had your dignity, but you thought this boy was melting it away piece by piece.
You returned to your shared rental with Lea after class ended. At the apartment desk, the security guard stopped you. “Miss Y/n. A boy left this parcel for you.” He grumbled and handed you the gift.
You thanked him kindly and proceeded up the stairs.
“Open it.” Lea crossed her arms and demanded after removing her shoes and coat.
You walked to the kitchen and cut the package with a pair of scissors. You dug into it and found a bag of homemade cake pops.
“I’ll take one thank youuu,” Lea joked while tearing the plastic bag of goodies from your hands. You giggled, a way of granting her permission as you watched her slump on the couch. You stepped to discard the package when a note card fell to the ground reading: ‘I’m sorry, y/n. If I had known they were filming us, I would have kissed you on those rosebud lips of yours to let everyone know you’re mine.’
You released a voiceless whimper. Felix was surely playing you, but he made you feel special and desired none the less.
You quickly picked up the note and hid it in your back pocket.
It's been almost two weeks since Felix last asked you out. You had seen him around campus and longingly stared at him in hopes he would look at you. The few times your eyes caught his, Felix blushed and turned away. Now that he was respecting your boundaries, you didn’t want him to ignore you.
The sneers and occasional trash talks you received since the video of Felix’s delicate kiss to your head didn’t get under your skin. The few times they would, you couldn’t think much of them; you had more important matters to ponder about. You chewed on the painful distance between you and Felix habitually.
Studying wasn’t worth it. Your mind always trailed back to him. You wondered how he was. You hoped he was fairing better than you with his studies. You couldn’t help but miss his tranquil presence. Even if he was desperate for you, Felix had a calming aura that aroused you in the most loving way.
Aside from studying, you couldn’t get much sleep at night. Felix was awaking you every time you tried to clear your mind. He had engulfed and overpowered you into a longing for him.
You sat down in your class with a huff.
“Someone’s grumpy,” Jackson teased playfully.
Upon seeing your lifeless form, Lea hummed. “I think it’s ‘cause she slept in.”
You folded your arms on the desk and threw your head down. “I’m not going to do well on this,” you muttered.
Jackson and Lea exchanged looks. “Y/n, you studied-”
“Not really,” you admit to them. “My mind’s been… elsewhere.”
“Wha- why?” Jackson asked. “Is it Felix? You said he was leaving you alone, right? He’s not bothering you is he? I swear I’ll punch that hopeless romantic in the gut if you fail your exams.”
“Please don’t.” Your friends recognized the pitch in your voice; you were crying now.
Lea leaned towards the table and softly spoke. “Y/n, what happened?”
“I- I don’t know.” You shot up from hiding your face in your arms. Your puffy eyes were no stranger to the classmates around you as it was finals season. Lots of tears had fallen from multiple peers in the past week. Thankfully, they paid no mind to your tear-stained face and brushed it off as the stress that came with final exams.
“He’s doing things to my heart, and I can’t explain how hopeful I am that he’s not toying with me.” You reached for your pencil case and pulled out the letter Felix had written a few weeks earlier.
“Oh.” Lea’s reaction mirrored Jackson, whose mouth circled like an ‘o.’ They already suspected your feelings for him long before you had received the note.
“So, do I beat him to a pulp or…” Jackson joked, hoping to make you smile. But his efforts only resulted in his ribs getting elbow jabbed by Lea.
“I don’t know what to do.” Your voice was pulsing with desperate hope from your friends.
“Tell him ‘yes.’ Y/n, next time he asks you, and I’m sure there will be a next time, say ‘yes.’” Lea soothed your anxious mind with the natural honey in her tone. “The only thing you have to lose is your chance with your dream guy.” She winked and turned her gaze to the podium where the professor was introducing the exam.
Her words echoed in your mind. What did you have to lose other than Felix? Your dignity? No. If Felix is the right guy for you, he would strengthen your worth rather than hinder it. As you opened your laptop to the class page, you crossed your fingers, wishing Felix would ask you just once more.
Two days have passed since your last exam. Lea scored higher than you on your overall average. It made sense, and you easily accepted it. You spent hours of mindlessly studying the textbook while Lea actually studied. The two of you, along with Jackson, celebrated the success of your roommate with drinks.
“So,” Jackson began after the clink of your shots. “Has he asked you out yet?”
“No,” you frowned.
“Hey! I thought tonight was about me!” Lea laughed, trying to lift the mood so thick, you could cut it with the wimpy, plastic knives from your college cafeteria.
Jackson had only downed a shot or two; thus, he still was fully aware of his surroundings. So when he saw Felix stride through the local campus bar, he pinched Lea’s shoulder.
“Yah! What do you nee-” Jackson shushed her and guided her face towards Felix’s figure. They turned their attention back to the dim-lit table and met your curious gaze.
Jackson winked. “Don’t worry, y/n. He’ll come for you.” Both he and Lea stood up and walked to the bar for another round of drinks.
You stood up with your brow furrowed, but before you could follow them, you spotted Felix. He looked stunning in his ripped, leather pants and neatly combed hair. The green neon lights above fell on his sculpted face in the most angelic way. You admired him for a while until he moved to dance with a girl. 'With that skin tight dress of hers, how could he fight the urge to grind on her thin hips?' You thought, wishing you had worn something more than a long sleeved crop top and black jeans. Your gaze fell to the floor; you wore your ballet flats. They weren’t the most attractive, but at least they didn’t blister your feet.
You sighed and went after your friends. It had been 2 minutes at most, but you found Lea shamelessly twerking on a peer from her bio class and saw Jackson, long past sober, swiveling on a bar stool and mindlessly ranting to the man next to him about asparagus. The sex driven Lea and rhetorical thinker Jackson had made way out of hibernation. They were drunk.
You hustled to pay for your drinks and exited the crowd. It was cold outside, and you fell victim to the chill in your thin shirt. You didn’t want to flag down a taxi or call an Uber; at this time of night, riding alone with a stranger was not a pill you could swallow. Leaning against the building, you pulled open your contacts. Maybe your landlord would give you a ride home? Before your finger hit the call button, Felix called your name.
Waiting for exams to pass without hearing your voice or seeing your tender eyes up close was absolute hell for Felix. On occasion, he caught you looking at him. But as quickly as he saw you, you bashfully turned away. He kept his word and left you to your studies. Felix knew you cared about your education, and he was the last person who wanted to be in your way. So, he backed off at your excuse of exams.
After the last week of tests, final averages were posted near admissions. Felix eagerly raced to see how well you did. He knew by allowing you the space you needed to ace exams would easily grant you a high grade. But your name wasn’t in the top 100 list. He checked it once, twice, thrice before turning to the longer list of all student results.
Felix’s eyes were glued on the page; he memorized each printed name as he glossed over them looking for yours. When he found it, his head fell from his defeated shoulders. You didn’t do well. In fact, you did better last semester when he had bugged you to go out with him.
Something was wrong, yet he couldn’t understand.
Until he realized, you must’ve been tormented by his flock of admirers. He came to the conclusion that he would permanently give you space; the last thing he wanted was to bring pain to the girl he truly likes.
Felix tried avoiding you by taking different routes to class. If he did see you, he felt guilty and wished there was a way to protect you from the world.
He couldn’t keep you from gracefully invading his mind. Jisung, another playboy at campus, suggested “getting drunk or having sex with another bitch to remove that chick” from his mind. Felix’s nostrils flared when Jisung referred to you as a “chick” when you deserved much more than such a lowlife name. He nearly immobilized Jisung had his friends not stepped in and prevented Felix from further harming the boy.
Directly after throwing punches to his friend, he felt horrible. Felix sprinted away from his peer; it was ironic how he found himself in the campus bar. He downed no more than three shots. He didn’t want to forget you. Yet, his carnal instincts kicked in when Belle approached him.
She wore a mahogany, sheath dress that did wonders for his dry spell. Felix hadn’t been sleeping with anyone since he promised to ask you out after exams. He believed he needed to be faithful and better in order to make you his.
As she began to shake her rear against him, he placed his hands on Belle’s hips. 'Too skinny,' he thought. He would’ve preferred you.
It was like a higher being heard his plea because he saw you seated with your friends. The dim lighting made you look like a fever dream. He longed for you to be his. When he turned back to catch a look at you again, you were gone.
“E-excuse me,” Felix removed Belle’s body from his, but she clung to him like velcro.
She flicked her false lashes at him and grinned. “My place or yours?”
“I need to go.” He pushed her off a little more aggressively than he should and left without another word.
He found you outside, leaning against the club. Alone.
“Y/n!”
A wave of heat flashed through your body when your name fell from his tongue. You eagerly turned to him. Felix ran the short distance between you before urgently pressing his lips on yours.
The kiss was patient, yet you both could sense a deeper passion. Felix pulled your cold body against his and tightened his arms around your waist. Your fingers ruffled the bit of hair that touched the nape of his neck. He pulled his lips away; you quickly whined in protest, but Felix didn’t let you go.
He burrowed his face into your shoulder. You leaned to kiss his head, and he began whispering soft words against your skin causing you to shiver, this time, not from the cold temperature.
“Felix,” you whispered. “I- I can’t understand you.” You giggled breathlessly at him when his face moved back to yours.
“I’m sorry.”
“Why? Felix, are you ok?”
“I- fuck. I love you, y/n. And I’m aware that we hardly know each other, but please. I want to learn every precious detail about you. Tell me your favorite way to pass the time on a rainy day. Tell me who taught you how to braid because gosh, when your hair is braided to the side, you make me want to rip out any gawking eyes that look at you. In fact, I won’t hesitate-”
“Felix.” Your voice was quiet. It was his first time hearing you so vulnerable, and it made him want to kiss every part of you. You deserved to be showered with kisses on a daily basis. But he traced his fingertips along the sleeves of your crop top and passionately listened to you.
“Ask me again.”
He smiled and raised a brow, puzzled. “Ask you what?”
You stared at him and fought the urge to kiss the small dimples on his face. You hadn’t noticed them before.
“Will you go out with me, Felix?”
“Fuck. No.” He cursed under his breath. His eyes turned to you when he felt you crumble in his hold. “Wait, shit. No, that’s not what I meant.”
You stepped back with tears brimming your radiant eyes, and it made Felix want to pull you back against him and never, never let you go.
“I wanted to ask you out!”
“You’re mad at me for asking you out!?”
“Yes!”
“Lee Felix, will you ask me out?”
“Y/n, please go out with me!?”
“Goodness yes.” You breathlessly whispered with no hesitation in your voice. He wasted not a second more before pulling you into his arms again. You tightly gripped his shirt; a few tears fell from your lashes. Felix felt them and released you from his embrace. He raised his hands and carefully wiped away every tear. He saw your lip quiver and observed how cold you were.
“Let me drive you home,” he quavered. Felix’s hand was warm in yours; his pinky tangled with yours as he led you to his car.
He knew where your place was. There weren’t many words spoken on the way to your apartment. Both of you were embarrassed and unsure about what to do next.
As he pulled to the building, he shifted to park and turned to you. “I want to take you out tomorrow.”
“I’d like that,” your voice was sunny. You inched closer to him and kissed his lips once more. It was quick, but it was everything you needed to know he was yours. “Good night, Felix.” You stepped out of the car and trudged to the apartment gate.
“Y/n!” Felix stood on the drivers side and yelled. “I need your number!”
You stopped punching the code for the gate to open. “Pick me up here tomorrow at six, and I’ll give it to you!” You playfully hollered back.
“I’ll be here,” he whispered, watching your figure walk through the gates.
“Oh. Em. Gee. Wow! I’m so glad you got him, y/n!” Lea cheered when she finally had some conscience. “Where are you going?”
“Oh, uhm, I’m not sure.” You realized the issue. Not having his number made choosing the perfect outfit harder. 'Shouldn’t have played hard to get,' you thought.
“Knowing him,” Lea stepped for your closet. “He’ll probably take you somewhere nice. Like a concert, fancy restaurant, or art exhibit. Since he’s head over heels in love with you.” She pulled a black velvet dress off its hanger and handed it to you. “Oh! Here.” She tossed you some sheer, black tights as well.
“I hope you’re right,” you giggled and went to change.
Lea adored the gown and begged to straighten your hair; she thought it looked best with your outfit. Once straight, she tied your hair into a low ponytail. She picked some dangly earrings for you to wear in addition to a silver bracelet. You felt like an actress being prepped for a scene. Lea was definitely the stylist between the two of you.
Your roommate stood by the window as it was nearing 6:00. You sat nervously on the couch, praying your outfit was right.
“He’s here.”
With a shaky sigh, you slipped on your shoes and went to the door. “Wish me luck.”
“You’ve got nothing to worry about, y/n. You’ve made an impression of Felix, one so strong he’s stopped sleeping around.” She walked over to straighten the collar of your coat before continuing. “Plus, if anything does happen-- but I highly doubt he’ll be a jerk to you-- remember, Jackson’s offer to beat him up still stands.”
You giggled in unison before hugging her and heading past the threshold.
What a sight you were. As you stepped out the apartment gates, his breath hitched. You bloomed in the evening fog. He hustled to the passenger door and eagerly opened it for you.
You paused before getting in. “Does my outfit fit the occasion?” You asked nervously.
“Yes; it’s perfect.” He charmed.
Felix drove away. His car was warm, and it calmed your nerves. You kept stealing glances at his profile, noticing the kisses of the sun on his cheeks and nose. His lips were highly alluring and since last night, you wanted nothing more than to kiss him again.
The ride was quiet. Felix played some soft r&b music in the background. At every traffic light, he turned to you and took your hand in his. He raised it to his lips and kissed the back of your hand; his eyes remained locked with yours, causing you to buzz with delight.
“We’re here.”
He shifted to park before stepping to your side and opening the door. You stood on the curb and admired the restaurant while Felix paid the parking meter. Dilettante was one of the finest restaurants in town. You had never been; it was far too expensive. The thought puddled in your stomach. Felix brought you to a highly exquisite restaurant on the first date.
“Felix.”
He hummed. Finished with the meter, he latched your arm with his and strolled to the building. “Yes?”
“This is expensive. Are you sure we should eat here? We can always go to Olive Garden or-”
“Y/n.” Felix paused and slipped his hand in yours. “This is the only place you deserve for a first date.”
Your cheeks darkened at his comment when he started up to the door. “Mia, your finest table please," he winked. The receptionist led you to a candle lit corner booth. She placed the menus on the surface: “Your server will be here shortly.” Mia return the wink and strolled back to the front.
Felix obviously knew the girl. You removed your oatmeal coat and sat down. Felix sat across from you. You leaned in and whispered, “Have you slept with her?”
He laughed. He laughed at you. You chuckled nervously, unsure of why you were laughing. “Mia’s my cousin.”
Shoot.
“Your cousin?”
“Hmm,” he glanced down and played with his wrist watch. “My family owns this restaurant.” You were not expecting that. “We get to eat here for free-”
“So, I’m a free meal?”
“What? No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.” His head snapped up when you spoke. His hands reached across the table and held to yours. “I’ve actually never brought a girl here.” He mumbled while his thumb caressed your skin.
“I wasn’t even expecting the meal to be free-- I mean, I was expecting a discount, but I think my family is excited for me to finally stop sleeping around and bring someone here.”
You nodded in understanding. Your hands played with his. “Felix, you said you didn’t want to be tied down…”
“That was before I met you.” That smile of his could light up the entire restaurant.
You didn’t get to respond right away; a server came and took your drink order. He placed a basket of fresh bread on the surface and slid a platter of sweet butter alongside. You both ordered water and the server returned quickly with your drinks in hand.
“Have you decided on something to order?”
“Gosh, you’ve hardly given us time to decide, Kang.” Felix sneered and rolled his eyes.
“Right, yes. Of course. Sorry, sir.” The boy, around your age if not younger, fearfully backed away. Felix hung his head in shame when the server scurried away.
You held his hands in your; you stopped playing with them and held them still. “Lix-”
“I know, I know. I shouldn’t have snapped at him.” He raised his gaze to yours. He shuffled closer to you-- the booth made it easy for him to melt at your side so quickly-- and linked his fingers in yours once more. He tucked a wisp of hair behind your ear and kissed your neck. “I just want tonight to be perfect,” Felix breathed into your skin before sitting upright again.
You didn’t know what to say. He kept leaving you breathless; you could hear your heart pounding louder now that he was closer to you. And when his palm slid to your thigh in a non-sensual way, you prayed he wouldn’t hear how harshly your heart pounded against your rib cage.
"This isn't the best table here," he commented upon seeing your flustered state.
"We don't need to move tables. This is fine," you assured.
"I made sure Mia reserved this table. It wasn't hard; no likes sitting in the back corner anyways. But I like it here. I can kiss you without any bothersome stares."
Felix reached for a piece of bread and spread some butter on it before passing it to you. 'What a gentlemen,' you reminded yourself for the nth time this evening.
You took a sip of water after finishing the dough and spoke, “What’s the best meal here?”
“The alfredo.” He didn’t hesitate at all, and he reached for the menu to show you the different options. “My favorite is the regular chicken, but they're all decent.”
“I’ll have a chicken fettuccine alfredo then,” you giggled and swiped a hair out of his eye.
The things you did to him caused red to tickle his cheeks.
A different waiter came back and took your order. Felix explained the kid who previously served you was a distant, younger cousin and that they weren’t on the best of terms. You didn’t pry.
“Y/n?”
“Hm?”
Felix bit his lip gently before continuing, “What happened to your finals?”
“Oh, that.” You laughed deeply.
“Were there more posts like the one on Instagram or have people been bothering you?”
“No. Well, only you.” You smiled, and when you saw his clueless face, you added: “I couldn’t really study because I kept thinking of you.”
“I’m glad it was because of me. I don’t know what I would’ve done if students had been hurting you,” he admitted and leaned a little closer to your warmth, blushing.
He watched as you tried to refold the cloth napkin into its original swan origami. And when he took his and instantly folded it back, an engaging conversation about origami fortune tellers and puppets took place. Apparently, Felix was in his 5th grade talent show with a few of his buddies. They put on a Star Wars puppet show made with construction paper. The talent show gave no winners, but Felix was certain they would’ve won.
“Who would’ve known you, the mysterious campus bad boy, was into arts and crafts,” you giggled delicately at him.
“Am I still a bad boy in your eyes?”
“No!” Your response was swifter than intended. “Sorry that was a poor choice of words. You were the campus bad boy, but now you’re all mine.” You pressed against his torso and kissed his lips.
“You changed me, y/n.” Felix began and paused his words when the plates of pasta arrived. “I found myself desperate for you. So desperate. I couldn’t imagine being with anyone but you. I stopped jumping from bed to bed a while ago; I hoped it would prove myself to you. Because y/n, I want to be tied down with you for the rest of my life.”
It occurred to him that you hadn’t stopped looking at him since he began speaking. You hadn’t even touched your plate yet.
“Stop staring at me,” he blushed.
You moved your eyes to the cuisine and twirled the pasta. “I’m so in love with you I don’t think that’s possible.”
Felix’s fork clinked onto the ceramic plate. He faced you and met your gaze.
“Wait, was that too soon? I didn’t mean to offend-”
You couldn’t finish your apology with his breath dangerously close to your lips. “I love you, too.”
His lips were creamy and warm when they pressed into yours; they tasted like alfredo sauce. His pinky maneuvered its way to lock with yours while the other hand pulled you deeper into the kiss. He moved away after ensuring your pinky finger was connected with his.
Felix admired how dazed you looked after just one kiss. He didn’t notice it last night, but then again, that was the first kiss you had shared together. You opened your doe eyes at him, and he smirked.
“I’ll kiss you later. Eat your food.” He bent over his plate and continued to eat. You did the same. “How does it taste?” Felix asked, confident it would meet your expectations.
“It’s delicious,” you faced to him and smiled. Your pinky gave his a loving squeeze. “But…”
His eyes widened slightly. “But…?”
“The sauce tasted better on your lips.”
You pivoted back to your dish; you tucked that stray hair back behind your ear and bit your lips.
Felix looked down at his plate and pierced his lips together as he grinned. “You really are perfect,” he breathed, before twirling another spoonful of pasta into his mouth.
“Do you know how to make this?” You confidently inquired.
“I do,” he hummed.
“This is the best fettuccine alfredo I’ve ever had, and having a boyfriend who can make it-- you’re truly the love of my life.” Although you said it in a teasing way, you meant it, and Felix knew you meant it.
Despite not knowing each other for long, being in his presence made you feel loved and safe. And Felix vowed to do just that.

Confessions Part 6
Pairing: Josh x Reader
Word Count: 4.5k
CW: smut, swearing
Tumblr media
Josh had ended up deferring his acceptance to the film program so he could take his first year at home. It was a good deal- he was taking a full time psychology program, so when he transferred, he would have almost all of the electives he needed, and he could take some film courses on the side to get familiar with the subject. The best thing about it by far was that it gave us another year before he moved out of state.
To be honest, I felt like one of those over dramatic teenagers who treat their boyfriends going to class like he was going off to war. I missed Josh like crazy. I was starting to feel a little co-dependent. I guess I was just spoiled; I’d spent our entire relationship seeing him pretty much every day. We spent at least six hours a day in the same building, stealing kisses in between classes, having lunch together, driving there and back in his car. I just wasn’t used to having to make actual plans to spend time with him. But since he was at the university most of the time, and I was working almost full time, I had to text my boyfriend in order to see him. It was horrible, really.
I had been a little worried about Josh going off to college. I’d heard a lot of relationships didn’t make it through the transition. People changed, they grew apart, and before you knew it you were looking at an entirely different person, not the one you’d fallen in love with. But Josh was finishing up his first semester, and we were still going strong. He was changing, there was no doubt about that.  He was going to more than his fair share of parties, of course, but he was really taking the whole student thing seriously, becoming a responsible, self-motivating student. My goofball was turning into a goofman. But in all the ways it mattered, he was still my Josh: warm and loving, and so much fun to be with. I got the distinct impression his classmates had that same opinion, especially the female ones. I’d seen more than a few of them shooting some serious daggers my way when he took me to parties or just to hang out on campus.
Josh was used to having plenty of women interested in him, and I’d gotten used to it as well. As far as I was concerned, they could look all they wanted- but I was the only one who got to touch. Josh made sure I knew he only had eyes for me. As nice as it was that he wanted me to feel secure, it felt pretty great to know I didn’t need the reassurance. It used to bother me when I saw other girls looking at Josh. I would ask myself if they were prettier than me, smarter than me, if they would put out for him. I would question whether or not I even deserved to be with a guy like Josh. But the first time we were sitting in the dorms with his college buddies and a woman with a short skirt and full lips walked past with a wink and a smile for Josh, I just felt… nothing. It was fine. I mean, I felt kind of bad for her. She was flirting with a guy who had his arm around someone else- she must not have much else going for her. There was no reason for me to be insecure because some girl thought Josh was hot and decided him being friendly meant he was into her.
That was how I decided I was ready to have sex with Josh. You have no idea how good it felt to realize I was past that place of petty, immature jealousy. I was completely comfortable in our relationship. I loved him, I trusted him, and I couldn’t remember the last time I doubted if he felt the same. Maybe it was because we weren’t seeing each other as much- if we didn’t have faith in each other, our relationship would have imploded by now. However it happened, I was grateful for it, and I was ready to take the next step with him.
I decided I was ready just as Josh was going into exam season- not stellar timing on my part. I didn’t want to distract him. I’d waited this long, a few more weeks wouldn’t kill me. Or so I thought. I didn’t know exactly what it was- it was like some kind of switch went off in my brain the moment I decided I wanted to have sex. Ever since then, everything Josh did was just so… hot. Not that he wasn’t hot before, but now I was getting turned on watching him eat chips by the handful. I found myself making full use of my graduation present. Josh liked to help out when I used it, but I got the feeling having him in the room would only make the problem worse. I was having a hard enough time not telling him to fuck me when we made out; I didn’t think I’d be able to stop myself if he was holding a vibrator to my clit. He always got hard when he did it… I could never do justice to how incredibly sexy it was to have Josh beside him, his hard on pressed into my thigh, while he worked the toy between my legs.
Josh’s exams all fell in the first three weeks of the period, and they were the hardest three weeks of my life. Every time I went over to his place, he would be hunched over his desk, going over his notes. He was so damn sexy when he was concentrating. I just wanted to straddle his lap and beg him to take me right there on the desk. Josh definitely noticed something was up, but he didn’t push it further when I denied it; his exams were keeping him preoccupied.
His last exam was scheduled for 9:00am this morning. I’d spent the last three hours waiting for him to call me to let me know he was finished. We had plans to go out for a celebratory lunch at Dairy Queen. Ice cream seemed like a bit of an odd choice, considering it was December, but it was Josh’s first pick. I’d seen how hard he’d been working the whole semester; he’d more than earned whatever lunch he wanted.
My phone rang just before noon, and I picked it up embarrassingly fast. Or it would have been embarrassing if I had any problem with Josh knowing I’d been waiting by the phone all morning.
“Hey! How’d it go?” I asked.
“Pretty good! At least, I think so. I feel okay about it.”
“You’ve been studying all week,” I said. “I’m sure you did great.” I’d seen all the work he put into this. I couldn’t imagine that work would go unrewarded.
“I dunno,” he said with a sigh.  “I’m just a little worried. Think I’m gonna go crazy waiting for the results.”
I chewed my bottom lip. “You know… I think- it’s just, I have something to tell you… I think it might help your mind off things.”
“What is it?”
“I’ll tell you at lunch,” I said. This was really a face to face conversation. “Pick me up?”
“I’ll be there in ten.”
*
Dairy Queen wasn’t as empty as I’d hoped it would be. Surprisingly, people craving terrible burgers and ice cream in the winter wasn’t that uncommon. Josh had been a bundle of nerves since he came to pick me up, no matter how much I tried to reassure him. It was getting me a little anxious too, to be honest. Josh wasn’t usually the worrying type.
We ordered our food and found a table near the bay window. “Relax, babe,” I said, reaching over the table to take his hand. “It’s done, it’s out of the way; obsessing about it now isn’t gonna make it any better.”
Josh sighed. “It just sucks… I know I could’ve done better if I had another hour,” he said.
“Did you study?”
“What?” Josh’s brow furrowed. “Yeah, you helped me.”
“Did you answer all the questions?”
“Yes, but-”
“Then you did the best you could,” I said, squeezing his hand. “I quizzed you myself- you knew your shit.”
“Being quizzed by my girlfriend in my room is different than taking an exam in a fucking lecture hall,” he said. “I know I left shit out.”
“You can afford to leave a couple things out,” I said. “That doesn’t mean you’re gonna fail.”
Josh groaned. “Why couldn’t it be a fucking scantron? Those take like two seconds to grade.” He sank down in his seat so he could lean his head against the chair back- no easy feat for a guy his size. His legs ended up on my side of the table. “This is fucking killing me. What did you wanna tell me? I could seriously use a distraction right now.”
And just like that, all of Josh’s nerves slammed themselves right into my stomach. “Right… Uh, well-”
“Here ya go!” A waitress who seemed far too perky for a fast food place put out food on the table. “Two mushroom swiss burgers, fries, and a chicken strip basket. Enjoy your meal!” She scampered back to the kitchen as Josh unwrapped the first of his burgers. The parchment was already covered in sauce, and my nose crinkled at the sight. Josh just laughed.
“It’s better than it looks,” he said.
“You say that every time.”
And it’s true every time.” He grinned. “If you’d give it a try, I think you’d like it.”
I shook my head. “Chicken strips seem like a safer bet.” Why was this so easy? This completely unplanned conversation was effortless, but when I turned my attention back to the speech I’d spent the last month planning, I was tongue tied.
Josh cocked his head to the side as he brought his milkshake to his lips. “You okay?”
I managed a smile. “Yeah, I’m good,” I said. It was a struggle not to stare down at the basket, but I had a feeling I wouldn’t come across as a mature adult ready for sex if I couldn’t even meet his eye. I cleared my throat and took a breath. “I’ve been thinking-” Christ, my heart is pounding right now- “We’ve been dating for a long time-” My palms are sweaty. Is the rest of me sweaty? Can he see it?- “And I just feel so comfortable and safe with you now-” What if he doesn’t want to? Why the fuck would he not want to, idiot? You were dry humping last week- “I think we’re in a really strong place-” Does everybody get this nauseous when asking someone to take their virginity?- “And I’m ready. To, uh… to have sex. With you.”
Josh was silent for way too long. It was probably only a couple of seconds, really, but it felt like fucking hours. I was trapped in Schrodinger’s box, simultaneously existing in a state of excitement and terror before Josh responded.
He slowly put the milkshake back on the table. “Wow,” he said. Well. At least it was a word. That was better than complete silence. I resisted the urge to cry out my relief when he smiled. “I mean, I kinda figured we were going in that direction,” he said. “But still, that’s… big. Are you sure?”
“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” I said. “Or anyone. I know it’s taken me a while to get here, but I’m ready. I love you, and I trust you, and I’m so fucking horny, Josh; every time I look at you my vagina hits me with a rolled up newspaper and demands to know why I haven’t fucked you yet.”
Josh laughed. “That’s an… interesting description. But I think it was a compliment, so thanks for that.”
“It’s an accurate description,” I said, popping a fry into my mouth. “I don’t know how I lasted this long. I’ve never been this frustrated in my life.”
He couldn’t keep the grin off his face. That shouldn’t be turning me on as much as it was but that’s where we were now. “So, we gonna get a nice hotel? Cover the bed in rose petals, get a bottle of fancy champagne and chocolate covered strawberries?”
“We could do that,” I said. “Or we could go back to your place and do it before your sisters get home.”
Josh chuckled. “That doesn’t sound very romantic,” he said.
“Yeah, but it means we get to have sex, like, now.”
“Don’t we have to talk about it first?” he asked.
I shrugged. “We talk about it like every time we fool around,” I said. “I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of what to expect.”
“I just wanna make sure you’re comfortable, you know? Losing your virginity is a major thing.”
“It is,” I said. “But I took my time. I waited for the right person, I waited until I was ready, I waited until your exams were over.” I reached over and ran my hand up his forearm. “I’m done with waiting. I don’t need it to be some big romantic thing. It’ll be perfect, as long as it’s with you”
*
After the big confession, it didn’t take either of us very long to finish our meals. It was safe to say we were both pretty eager to get back to his place. Beth and Hannah usually got home around 4:00 and we wanted as much time to ourselves as possible.
We got to the house and made a beeline for Josh’s room. My hand hadn’t left his since we got out of the car. The butterflies in my stomach refused to leave, but I didn’t mind so much anymore. They were kind of fueling my excitement.
Josh’s lips were on mine the second we stepped into his bedroom. By the time he kicked the door closed, his hands had firmly planted themselves on my ass. I tangled my fingers in his hair as we stumbled towards the bed. We lost our shoes and jackets on the journey there.
We fell onto the bed and Josh maneuvered his way on top of me. I instinctively spread my legs and let him settle between them. I could feel his growing bulge against my core as his lips trailed down my neck. I ran my nails down his back, gripped the soft fabric of his t-shirt and tugged on it. Josh pulled away long enough to yank it off and toss it to the floor. His lips reattached themselves to my skin, this time my collarbone. He sucked light bruises onto the sensitive flesh and I hummed my appreciation.
“Josh~” I moaned as he slid his hands up my shirt. I lifted my back off the bed and he undid my bra. His hands moved back around to my chest and palmed my breasts. His thumb rolled over my nipple and I arched my back onto his touch.
I pushed him back and sat up so I could pull my shirt over my head. Josh looked like a starving man staring at a turkey dinner. His pupils were blown bigger than I’d ever seen them, and I was sure I looked just as desperate.
His lips were beyond excited to explore the newly exposed skin. He took his time, making sure to give each boob the proper treatment, dividing the efforts of his hands and his mouth evenly.
I felt my stomach flip when he started moving further down. He kissed along the waist of my pants, pausing to suck on each hip bone. He looked up at me with dark, devilish eyes.
“You’re so fucking hot, baby,” he said as tugged the fabric down my legs. I kicked the pants off and leaned down to tug off my socks. My heart pounded as he spread my legs and laid down between them. He dragged his tongue over my panties, keeping eye contact as he did. I bit my lip and gripped the sheets in anticipation of what was about to happen. Josh grinned as he pulled my panties to the side. “Now, I know my tongue isn’t a Satisfyer, but I think you’re really gonna enjoy this.”
My laugh turned into a gasp as his tongue delved between my folds. He spread my lips with his fingers and pressed his tongue into my entrance. We’d done our fair share of fooling around, but he’d never used his tongue before, just his fingers and the toy. As his tongue moved inside of me, his nose pressed against my clit. My hips bucked into his face, and he pressed one hand on my stomach to hold me still while he worked. His tongue slipped out of me and was quickly replaced by his middle finger as he licked up to my clit.
I cried out when he curled his finger to hit my g-spot. His lips wrapped around my clit and he sucked on the sensitive bud. My hands flew to his head and gripped his hair. He slipped a second finger in as he swirled his tongue around my clit. There was just a little bit of burning as he added a third finger, but that was as far as the discomfort went. The pleasure of him massaging my walls as his tongue worked my clit far outweighed the pain.
It was hard to believe it had been so long since Josh did this. Obviously he’d been keeping his skills sharp. I’d never been touched like this before- I didn’t even know what I needed, but Josh didn’t need any instruction. He kept going, three fingers fucking me while his mouth licked and sucked, until my back bent and I felt my soul leave my body. My fingers tightened in his hair; it had to be hurting him, but he didn’t let up. He refused to stop until I moved my palm to his forehead and pushed him away.
Josh grinned and dipped his head down to kiss my stomach. “How was that?” he murmured.
It took me a minute to register the question at all, then another minute to convince my mouth to move. “That was… that was fucking incredible.” I chuckled. My head was in the clouds as I fought to push off the post-orgasm bliss long enough to get my body working against.
I pushed Josh off of me and very shakily crawled over to him. My hand drifted over to the bulge in his pants, which was now a full on tent. I ground my palm into his groin and Josh let out a low groan. I swear to god, that was the most beautiful sound I’d ever heard. I pulled his jeans and his boxers down, and his erection leapt out at me. I must have seen him hard at least a dozen times by now, but there was something different about it now that I knew it would be inside of me soon.
I wrapped my hand around his cock and stroked his hot shaft.
“You don’t have to do that, you know,” he said with a grin. “I’m pretty much ready to go over here.”
“I know,” I said as I leaned down and licked his head. “I just wanna make you feel good.” I’d only sucked him off a couple of times, but I loved doing it. I was sure I wasn’t the best at it, but Josh was just so reactive. I loved feeling him squirm and hearing his groans as I took him into my mouth. The way he looked down at me with his mouth hanging open and his eyes clouded with pleasure… shit, even the thought of it sent shivers down my spine. I closed my lips around his tip and started bobbing my head, taking him just a little deeper with each movement. I still couldn’t take all of him without gagging, but I’d worked my way up to a little more than half. Josh pulled my hair into a ponytail to guide my mouth along his shaft.
“God, I fucking love your mouth,” he groaned.
I pulled back, stroking his cock leisurely as I said “I hope you love the rest of me too.”
“You know I do,” he said. “But at the moment, your mouth’s the part of you I’m most focused on.”
I sat up. “Really?” I asked. “There’s no part of me you might want just a little more?” I straddled his hips and ground my core against his cock. “Nothing at all?”
Josh’s eyes rolled back as my wetness coated his shaft. His hand flew over to the bedside table, opened it, and groped around until he found the box of condoms. My hips continued to rock as he snatched one of the packets out of the box. They only stilled when Josh paused to scrutinize the back of the packet.
“Did you forget how to put them on?” I asked, only half joking.
Josh chuckled. “Just checking through expiry,” he said. “I’ve had these since we started dating.” He lifted the plastic square up triumphantly. “Still good!”
“Woulda really sucked if it wasn’t,” I mused as he opened the packet and slid the condom onto his hard cock. “I mean, just imagine it. We’re here, I’m all ready to lose my virginity, and we get cockblocked by an expired condom.”
“You know, as arousing as this conversation is-“
“Down to business, right.” I looked down at his covered cock and swallowed. This was it. I raised my hips up and positioned myself over his member.
Josh grabbed my hips before I lowered myself down. “I just gotta ask one more time- are you sure about this?”
I moved my hands up his forearms and nodded. “I am.” I kept my eyes locked on his as I sank onto his cock. His eyes widened and he let out a soft moan as my walls closed around him. I sucked in a breath at the feeling of him filling me completely. It was… different than I expected. It didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would. Not actual pain, at least, but there was this weird pressure right at my entrance. It was strange. I’d never been this full before.
I was so wrapped up in the sensation, I didn’t realize it’d been a full minute since I moved until Josh squeezed my hip and asked “you okay?”
I adjusted my position and let out an entirely involuntary noise as I felt him move inside of me. “Jesus…” I took a breath. “I’m good,” I said. “It just… takes some getting used to.”
“Take your time,” he said, his fingers caressing my waist.
I rested my hands on his stomach. “Am I supposed to, like, bounce or grind or what?” I asked with a breathy chuckle. Maybe I wasn’t as well prepared as I thought I was.
“Just do whatever makes you feel good,” he said.
I lifted my hips until just his tip remained inside of me, then sank back down on him. That was… interesting. There was a spark of pleasure. Nowhere near as big as when he was going down on me, but it was there, and it was helping me forget about the pain. I braced myself on my hands as I started to ride him. Josh’s head fell back onto the pillow and he moaned. That sound made whatever discomfort this caused more than worth it. Josh’s tip just brushed against my g-spot and I gasped. I pushed my hips forward, simultaneously pushing his cock against that sweet spot and grinding my clit against his groin. I repeated the motion and moaned “fuck, Josh~”
“You’re so fucking tight, babe,” he groaned. “I don’t- shit- I’m not gonna last very long.”
“That’s fine,” I mumbled. “Want you to come.” He’d already made me feel so good- I just wanted to return the favour. I’d made him wait our entire relationship to get to this; I wasn’t about to ask him to hold off his orgasm too.
I moved my hands to either side of his shoulders and leaned over him. His hands slid up my back, pulling me closer to him as my hips continued to roll. He leaned up to close the rest of the distance between us and captured my lips in a heated kiss. His hands clenched into tight fists and his hips bucked up into mine. He buried his cock fully inside of me and moaned against my lips. I broke the kiss so I could watch his expression melt into pure bliss as he came into the condom.
Josh collapsed back onto the bed and I lowered myself onto his chest. We were both sweaty, sticky, and hot, but I didn’t give a second thought to rolling off of him and cooling down. He rubbed my back as his cock softened and slipped out of my body.
“So…” Josh brushed my damp hair away from my face. “How do you feel?”
I buried my face against his neck to hide my smile. “I’m, uh, I’m feeling pretty good right now.”
“No regret?” Josh teased. “Not feeling like a part of you is missing? Like you’ve been forever changed?”
“I think you’re overestimating the power of your dick,” I said.
Josh gasped and clutched his chest. “I’m hurt,” he said.
I laughed and nuzzled into him. “I bet I can find a way to make it up to you,” I said.
“Mmm~” He kissed the top of my head. “I’m sure you can,” he murmured. “What time is it?”
I glanced over at the clock. “Two,” I said. “We’ve got time.”
“Good,” he said. “Don’t wanna move.” That was fine by me. I didn’t feel like getting dressed right away. I wanted to stay here with him as long as we could. Just like this, skin to skin.
“Josh?” I asked
“Mhm?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?” he asked.
“For everything,” I said. “For being so patient with me right from the start.”
“I was just trying to be the kind of guy who deserves you; you don’t have to thank me-“
“No, I do.” I pushed myself up onto my elbows so I could look down at him. “You were amazing,” I said. “You are amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better guy. I wouldn’t have wanted this to happen with anyone else.” I ran my finger down his cheek. “I’m just… I’m so happy I’m with you.”
Josh leaned up for a soft kiss. “Since we got together, all I’ve wanted to do is make you happy,” he whispered. “You mean the fucking world to me, Y/N. And I’m glad we waited. This was the right way to do this.”
I rested my forehead against his. “I love you. So goddamn much.”
“I love you too,” he replied. That big, goofy smile I loved so much painted on his face. “And I always will.”

You can find episode 14 on the NRK website without geoblock. In case you decide to jump in for the last stretch!
This is a bit of a weird one.
Aisha is at home, and she straight up texts Emrah that someone saw him kiss her, so now he has to meet her brother. I don’t run the texts through google translate because I’m that lazy, but I’m pretty sure Aisha is being all accusatory with the pronouns, like, “YOU kissed ME, so now you have to take responsibility!”
The show switches for a moment to Emrah, then back to Aisha, and then... We stay with Emrah for good. Now, if this were a Skam, I’d be like, “what’s this bullshit.” But lovleg did something similar in s2 when, (SPOILERS FOR LOVLEG S2) halfway through the season, the POV switched to Sara for a whole week.
In my opinion, we didn’t learn anything about Emrah in this episode that we couldn’t have figured out from what we’ve seen so far from Aisha’s POV (except for one thing I’ll mention later). That said, I think if you’ve been following the 17-verse all this time, this is a nice episode to check with the previous mains (who all have a stronger connection to Emrah than to Aisha) and see what they’re up to. At any rate, we can consider this episode, A Day In the Life of Emrah, and we’ll see whether the POV switches to Emrah again before the season is over.
So when Emrah gets Aisha’s text, he’s waiting for Abdi at a basketball court. Abdi is late because now he’s a serious adult who does serious things. Aisha keeps texting Emrah, and Abdi correctly guesses Emrah’s girlfriend is texting him. Emrah says she’s not his girlfriend. They talk a bit, and Emrah says he’s crazy in love with Aisha, but a man’s got his limits. Like getting told off at his side job, that’s a limit. But also he doesn’t blame Aisha because he thinks she deserves the world, and not someone like him.
Abdi says Aisha is also in love with Emrah, and Emrah scoffs. But Abdi says Aisha wouldn’t have kept texting him and hanging out with him, despite his history, if she didn’t care. Abdi thinks that ladies be making drama, that’s all. And he adds that Emrah has given Aisha plenty of reasons to make drama.
Abdi then asks Emrah to give him his phone, because he’s going to write a love message in Emrah’s stead. Emrah’s like, “come and get it if you dare.” They play basketball for a bit, and Abdi adds that Aisha should also stop fucking around and commit.
At any rate Emrah never gives Abdi his phone, and now he has to leave for his job. Which job, Abdi asks. Emrah says, the job.
So Emrah is at his place, dicing hashish in precisely weighed cubes. As he’s doing that, someone knocks on his door insistently. It seems like it’s a drunken lady neighbor who has mixed up apartment numbers. Tis freaks Emrah out though, and he goes to count the money he’s hidden in an envelope under the sink. He calls someone (I’m assuming Bigmac) to set up a meeting.
Emrah is picked up by Bigmac and a bulkier guy who must be the one in charge of dealing physical justice. Emrah gives them the envelope from earlier, and Bigmac is pissed because it’s nowhere near what Emrah actually owes him. This is lunch money to him, he says. Bigmac is tired of Emrah paying back his debt in small increments, as if he were making payments to his bank for a washing machine. He wants the 230,000 NOK he’s owed (around $28K) in less than a month. Emrah says he can’t make that much money that quick. Bigmac says to quit his job at Kiwi. Emrah’s like, “I can’t do that either, that’s my ticket to stability.” So the muscle is about to throw Emrah out of the car, when Emrah says he’ll do anything please!!
The next thing we see is Emrah watching as the car drives away.
Later on, Emrah is in front of his apartment building. Ibo, his brother, has come to visit him. I think maybe he drove part of the way or he got a grade he’s proud of in an exam? (The grade he says is 4, which is what Aisha got for his practice math test, so that can’t be right lmao.) Anyway, Ibo is clearly super happy to see his older brother. He’s staying with his uncle, as the Aydin brothers are orphans. The uncle asks Emrah if he isn’t going to invite them for tea or anything.
While Emrah is boiling water, the uncle points out his wife brought Emrah tupperware full of food he can microwave, as well as nice odds and ends like a tablecloth, to make the flat feel more homely. I instantly adore Emrah’s aunt lol. Emrah’s uncle offers to take Emrah in as well, and Emrah doesn’t know how to tell him that he doesn’t want to risk his brother’s and relatives’ lives like that.
All three men sit down to eat at Emrah’s other room, which is both a living room, a bedroom, and laundry room all in one (there’s a collapsible drying rack propped against the wall). The uncle leaves for the bathroom, which surprisingly isn’t also part of this room, and Ibo immediately is like, “we should get kebabs.” Emrah’s like, “your aunt made us the whole of Turkey to eat.” Ibo argues kebabs are healthier because they’re organic. This boy is so desperate to eat trash after months(?) of homemade food, he doesn’t even know what he’s saying anymore.
But after Emrah agrees to let the boy eat a kebab, Ibo remembers Emrah asked him to bring his passport over. He asks if Emrah is going on holiday, and Emrah is like nah, it’s just good to have your passport. Man, going abroad for a drug deal is like another level of crime. Isn’t there any way to stop Bigmac?
Emrah gets a final text from Aisha, and we switch back to her. She’s in her room when Yusuf comes in and tells her he arranged with their mom for him and Aisha to hang out tomorrow. They’ll be at a friend’s house at 6 (in the morning? Not sure), so Aisha should let her boy know.
Aisha hasn’t gotten a single response back from Emrah all day, so she basically texts Emrah that she’ll be at Khushi’s at 6 tomorrow and hopes for the best.

How does one wait for college acceptances??? As a senior currently waiting for 4 even though I only submitted like a week ago, the waiting is so anxiety producing even tho it's pretty obvious I'll get into these schools. How did you find ways to deal with the anxiety of waiting for decisions?
Ooof, that’s a hard one. Ummmmm. I’mma be honest and preface this with the fact that I’m a very bad example of how to cope with this anxiety but I’ll share what I did in case you can get anything useful out of it.
I threw myself into work so that I would be too busy to be worried. I figured that I occupied the mental space I did have by worrying about grades and clubs and literally anything else “more productive” then I wouldn’t have to worry about waiting for decisions outside of checking my email inbox all the time. My senior year I was doing 5 AP classes, serious scholarship chasing with speech competitions, swim season and karate, 3 other time-consuming clubs, working as a lifeguard, taking piano lessons, doing volunteer hours for NHS, trying to work on my writing in the snippets between study hall, and generally not getting enough sleep or eating enough food because I was too busy to bother making myself a proper breakfast or lunch before school.
I can’t really say I regret all of those activities that I did because I loved them and they all taught me a lot. I still miss swimming and debate and the trivia team and piano. My resume was super impressive and I got into a great school with good scholarships and on all outside counts I’ve been very successful but I can also say that the sanity I lost and self-care I didn’t do had a serious impact on my general health that year and I’m still trying to unlearn a lot of those bad coping skills. I still get myself in over my head trying to ignore other stressful things but I’m a little bit better about it now. Now I’m watching my younger sister do the same thing and I feel bad because she’s following my example.
I know you’re already taking a bunch of APs so I say this as a warning because I know how hard it is to slip into that “must always be productive” mentality, so instead I’d offer the advice that you could try to distract yourself and fill your time with other fun productive things that aren’t tied to obligations like writing, drawing, video games, playing an instrument, or other things you can enjoy but also put down on your own when you need to rest. And I know it’s hard with COVID but make time for your friends always. my friends are what got me through high school, and that moral support is so so so important. You’ve worked so hard to get this far and you have a lot of hard work ahead of yourself, so take the moment between now and exams to rest and enjoy the small wins while you have the chance.
And it sounds like you’re going to get into the schools so you can rest knowing that you did your best and that chance is on your side! I’m excited for you, that’s such a big step and I know you’re going to do well wherever you end up! I know it’s hard to believe now, but you know that “everything happens for a reason” mantra? I can point directly to things that happened during my senior year in those activities and go “that was a formative thing that had an impact later” in retrospect, and I know that everything that’s happened this year will have its place too. As uncertain as everything is, as long as you take it minute by minute, things will work themselves out eventually, and I’m cheering for you in the meantime :)
