grips. with the announcement of echoes of wisdom do you think they'll introduce the idea that there's been more zeldas in the hero role throughout the history of hyrule? there's more heroes than there are games. the existance of the first hero, the hero of men, and the hero of the first calamity all serve to prove this. have there been more zeldas put in the role of the hero, having to save hyrule? having to save link? not necessarily because he himself was the hero originally and got captured, but did circumstances make it so he was never going to be the hero to begin with?
#legend of zelda#echoes of wisdom#we've seen zelda outside of the role of the princess before too. in skyward sword and in wind waker/phantom hourglass#(tetra is not a princess even if she's truly a zelda)#even in ocarina of time as sheik or in twilight princess where she effectively serves as hyrule's queen#(my headcanon for twilight princess is that the king died in the twilight invasion and zelda took his place out of necessity)#(but ganondorf had the castle in his clutches and she was unable to fully take the throne until after the events of the game)#but like. imagine#some sort of flipped thing where zelda is Just Some Guy who happens to recieve the call of the hero#and link is the reckless brash prince who is functioning on half of an idea and a dream. probably 5 cups of coffee too#maybe this isn't actually going to happen since nintendo's pretty much made link and zelda as these specific characters with specific roles#and flipping or changing them in some way might not be recieved well#(even though as i mentioned it wouldnt be the first time zelda's not in a princess/leader role)#but........ it's still possible. if they wanted to

My Spirit Tracks designs inspired by LinkedUniverse :)
And facts under the cut!
I made these for the weekly prompt on the server! I'm still unsure about their nicknames, I liked calling Zelda "Spirit" and Link "Tracks", but later I started calling her "Angel" and Link either "Tracks" or "Engie". Help XD
LEFT: Zelda's design before the adventure. She's the great-great-granddaughter of Tetra and Wind, and they're both black and have curly hair in my designs, with Tetra's skin being a little darker than Wind's. Angel's skin is lighter than Wind's due to having a couple white ancestors between her great-great-grandparents and her. She took her eye color and freckles from Tetra and her nose from Wind!
CENTER: Zelda's design after the adventure. When she got separated from her body, her spirit was pale and light, hwr hair got wavy and floating, and her body lost color due to being "lifeless". When Malladus possessed her, her eyes changed from dark blue to yellow. When Zelda got back into her body, it didn’t regain its original color, much to her desperation. However, she enjoyed helping Link and got an outfit she really loves.
RIGHT: Link! He's the great-great-grandson of Niko and Aryll, who dated Niko as an adult. He's tanned but his ancestors between Aryll and him are mostly white. His design is mostly taken from his engineer clothes, but with the green tshirt and belt from his hero clothes. I originally wanted to roll his sleeves up but noticed how in LU everyone has long sleeves! His eyes are brown, and his personality is pretty much like Aryll's.
Facts!
- Of course they have the same great-great-great-grandparents. This, however, makes them too distant relatives to be considered family.
- Aryll joined the crew a few years after WW. She enjoyed being on the ship and when she turned 12 she decided to join her brother, and later, as an adult, she dated Niko (I headcanon Niko to be at most as old as Wind, but maybe a couple of years younger).
- Zelda's ancestors are all travelers and adventurers. Her parents, in particular, are alive and well but on a journey across the seas to visit the old islands and ancient Hyrule. Link’s parents have done pretty much the same, but Link chose to live with Niko and be a train engineer rather than sailing.
- Zelda hates her new look. She can't stand it at all, and while some makeup helps, she doesn't feel good. She hopes to regain her original appearance some day, mostly her colors, but both colors and hair type would be the best. Link always tells her she's beautiful no matter what, and he's totally sincere. He fell in love with her when she was a spirit, so looks really don't matter, but he too hopes she'll het her original appearance back as he wants to see her truly happy.
- When Zelda got back to her body, she didn't notice she was still that pale. There were so many other things to do, consider, think of. Moreover, she had her glooves on. After defeating Malladus she and Link went back to the castle where they quickly fell asleep due to exhaustion. After some hours, Link woke up to Zelda screaming in terror from her room. He went upstairs and noticed her in tears, staring at a mirror. She saw herself as a monster. Link tried to help, to tell her she's beautiful anyway, and then distracting her talking about adventures and history. This helped her, other than make her order some new clothes based on her adventure.
- In my headcanon Tetra didn't become a white and elegant princess when the king told her she was Zelda. She didn't even get a dress. She just got the information, and was left thinking about her ancestors. All the events of WW happened with the exception of Tetra still being Tetra, dark skin and pirate clothes.
- Yes Zelda's body will slowly recover and she'll eventually regain her original colors! Happy ending :)

ok but know I need you to Tell Me Things about the Zeldas. all of them. I am literally*bouncing*.
(I love how both your TP Link and Zelda have RBF. they have truly Had It)
HEHE sorry i held onto this ask until I had all the Zelda designs posted, and then I,,,forgot to do that lol.
some Bonus Zelda thoughts! some of this i've maybe said before idk:
ALTTP Zelda
her armor is more ceremonial than practical. While I didn't give this to every Queen Zelda, I liked the idea of the princess's pauldrons progressing to more plate armor in the queen's dress. That's also why I changed her color scheme to blue to differentiate from the princess' pink (exceptions for this being HW Zelda who wears red as queen, ST Zelda who still wears pink as queen and BOTW Zelda who wore blue as princess)
anyway. she's more of a scholar than a warrior but she still has killer aim with a bow
her pet project has been recovering, restoring, and filling in the gaps of the royal library and archive. Mage helps her out with this as he has a knack for stumbling upon forgotten ancient texts in his travels
A lot of ppl assume she's rather prim or austere but she's actually got a lot of whimsy and humor in her. It's why she and Mage get along so well :D
She lets Mage get away with a lot of shenanigans and keeps the royal guard from arresting his ass all the time
if mage is ur weird uncle she's like. ur cool aunt
Tetra
she's still sailing the seas with her crew!
she and Wake have had a bit of a falling out though, partially over disagreements about searching for New Hyrule, and have gone their separate ways for now. There's not any real animosity between them, just like,,,frustration. They'd still do anything for each other.
She's got 2 pistols and a cutlass and she knows how to use them
She could bench press Wake. easily.
She's brash and commands a lot of respect but she's also a lot of fun to be around. She's brutally honest and says what's on her mind.
I think she still feels a lot of confusion and frustration about the revelations about her lineage and the role King Daphnes seemed to force on her because of it. She doesn't want much to do with what the divine. She values the freedom sailing on the sea gives her.
TP Zelda
she's. so tired. a lot of the responsibility of rebuilding the kingdom has fallen squarely on her shoulders. She's holding shit together by a thread but by god is she holding it together.
Looks pretty cold and unapproachable but she has a kind heart. She cares deeply for the people of her kingdom. She would sacrifice a lot for them and already has.
Never relaxes. Works like 24/7. get this girl a hobby
Midzel canon. Midna also had a thing with Link but it wasn't a polycule more of a this is my girlfriend Midna and this is Midna's boyfriend Link kind of a situation. Anyway she misses Midna.
Wolf and Zelda are like. coworkers. They haven't really gotten any closer in the aftermath of everything. Wolf wants nothing to do with playing the role of the hero in a political sense like Zelda keeps asking him to. I don't think Zelda necessarily blames him for escaping that responsibility, but she Is frustrated she doesn't have that luxury.
MC Zelda
a little cutie!! very bubbly and extroverted and curious about the world. She spends a lot of time outside of the castle running around with Mini. The King is so glad she's safe after everything he still just lets her do whatever she wants lol
She used to be the one dragging Mini into shenanigans all the time but he's gained a lot of confidence over his quest and is less timid now. now they are equally engaging in shenanigans
Hangs out with Malon too!! The three of them are besties
I like to think she can also still see the minish even if she can't shrink down to their size. she thinks they're so cute. Maybe mini gives her a jabbernut so she can speak to them too :-)
She helps Mini build his fucked up little trash robots. She also pretties them up with paint
scolded by castle staff frequently for getting grass stains and dirt on her nice clothes lol. She probably isn't usually running around in her full princess garb though.
Like Mini, has mostly refused to process most of what happened to her and is just trying to enjoy life.
Prince Zel
I went back and forth about whether or not I wanted to go with naming him Sheik or not. I decided against it since this is the version of him that never had to become Sheik. He keeps Zelda as a legacy name and shortens it to Zel most of the time.
Pretty lonely in the castle without many friends his age. He desperately wants to be better friends with Mask but is mostly rebuffed.
Even though he doesn't have to become Sheik in this timeline, I think he has begun training with Impa. Just under a lot less duress
Still occasionally has prophetic visions but has become somewhat hesitant about sharing them. I think he understands a little more of what went on in other timelines than he lets on, but he doesn't know or put together all of it.
Often described as odd or intense or standoffish by ppl who meet him but he can be really chatty and lively under the right circumstances
HW Zelda
Her armor is also mostly ceremonial, even though she's definitely more of a warrior queen. She and War are both dressed to project 'peace time' and 'prosperity'. She has other sets of armor that are more suited for combat.
She and War are a lot alike, calculating and cunning, which is why they understand each other. It's also why they're often at each other's throats. They're not really above backstabbing each other, though has Queen she has a lot more leverage.
She's not exactly warm or particularly kind, but she does care about the safety of the Kingdom.
Also never relaxes and works like 24/7
Constantly dealing with a tense, power-hungry and antagonistic court looking to undermine her authority. She has her own private ambitions she's working towards.
ALBW Zelda
She's a really charming and fun person! very down to earth as Queen and a lot more willing to eschew tradition.
She comes across as carefree but she's been ruling Hyrule by herself since she was young and has been subject to a lot of pressure. She had to grow up pretty fast and is wiser than she seems at first glance. She has her court and the people's respect.
She and Mirror share an interest in fashion and the arts. They're,,, they're both theatre kids.
I don't have a lot of other headcanons abt her yet sorry but. i love her
ST Zelda
Has been crowned Queen at the ripe old age of 16 because the last time they appointed a chancellor he turned out to be a demon who stole her body. so
She does not feel ready to be Queen at all but she's doing her best. She's determined not to let anybody push her around again.
She's taken an interest in learning how to fight after the events of spirit tracks. She never wants to feel as helpless as she did then, trapped as a ghost outside her body. Also she really enjoyed hitting things with a giant sword in her big phantom armor. She's become a much better swordsman than Spirit ever was lol
She specifically requested her own suit of armor to mimic the phantom armor
she's pretty protective of Spirit
BOTW Zelda
I think she was conscious for all 103 of those years fighting ganon, even if it seems somewhat blurry and surreal to her now. She remembers it in fits and bursts. She often feels disconnected from her body.
She has no interest in reviving the monarchy or ruling over Hyrule again. However she does have an interest in rebuilding Hylian towns and helping all of Hyrule recover. She still feels like it's her responsibility, not because of her role as princess, but because of what she perceives as her own failure to avert tragedy.
she doesn't just blame herself though- she blames the gods and her father too.
Right now though she's mostly taking a break to get her bearings and recover from 103 years of endless fighting. She and Slate travelled around Hyrule for a while at first, and now she's settled in Hateno trying to figure out how to be normal again. Some rebuilding efforts have already started spearheaded by Hudson and she helps out with those.
SKSW Zelda
honestly not even she is sure what parts of her are herself and what parts are hylia. it's as disconcerting for her as it is for Loft. She's both frustrated that he looks at her differently now and understands completely why he does. She still wishes he wouldn't.
she remembers more about being the goddess than she necessarily lets on
she's really invested in the settlement on the surface and is basically its unofficial leader. she puts a lot of time and effort into making sure everything is going according to plan and that they have everything they need to keep living on the surface
she's protective of Loft and worries a lot for him. She blames herself for a lot of what he struggles with now and wants to make it better.
she's not the fun police though, she likes a death-defying loftwing stunt as much as the next person
she did become a knight after the events of skyward sword! They don't really wear the uniforms down on the surface much anymore though and it's become less of a formal order while everyone focuses on building and improving the village.
She's been working on her swordsmanship
I think she really loves music and singing

Morning, sire
I know what do you think about many incarnations of Zelda, but I have a question/point about Tetra specifically. As much as she had the triforce of wisdom, you didn't seemed to actually want to control (like puppet zelda) or imprisone (like in oot, in a cristal of some shorts) her. You kidnapped her and treated her rather fairly, even talking respectfully and putting her on bed to sleep like the child she was. It was endearing, almost as you took a liking to her. Did that happened bc she was a child or her bandit nature reminded you of your younger days?
Of all the Princesses I dealt with, she was both the most childlike and the most free-spirited. After her capture while we waited for the boy to arrive with the final piece of the Triforce, I naturally spent time engaging in the Princess's words.
They were much the same as I had heard before in the past from her predecessor; long-winded speeches regarding wisdom and hope and light. They were, in all, nothing worthy of remembrance.
However, she was but a child, and soon drained herself of energy. I, being a noble King, would not allow her to waste in a cell. So, yes, I formed a bed for her to rest.
It was in her sleeping hours that I gleaned from her mind who she truly was. She was an agent of freedom, born to live in the world her ancestors and her Goddesses caused.
She had thrived amid a sea of lifeless water. This was no stale Princess of a bygone era, this was a product of a new age. As such, she had no use for the relic that rested within her. Such tools and magics were outside her necessity or care.
She was unique, and innocent to the plans her ancient and dead world had for her. As such, I held no malice toward her, and was, for my part, respecting to her needs.

I literally just reblogged something on this, but here we go this is just too cool to me: The idea of changing the generic (?) Zelda formula and flipping it on its head.
The post I reblogged had an interesting appeal idea where, to summarize, a princess is born that is not Zelda (as in the mortal reincarnation of the Goddess), and not blessed with powers of wisdom. Scorn and disappointment ensue. She eventually has a daughter who actually IS Zelda, and we see just how struck she is by this, and tyranny ensues. Fantastic concept honestly, and it has me thinking just how many other ways we could shift the Zelda stories.
Let's discuss the absolute first one that needs to be said: Zelda being the one who saves Link. Frankly, I can't believe that there isn't a single canon game (to the best of my knowledge) where Zelda has to save/help out a trapped/distressed Link. While there's certainly no problem with this whole idea, especially due to the execution of it and how well various games have shown Zelda in states of lesser and more independence (think Sheik or Tetra), I do think playable Zelda in a mainline game is long-past due. Honestly, my main idea behind this would've been to do a half-and-half, where you spend half the game as one character, and the remaining half as the other. Or even the first half switching between the two, before Link gets snatched up and Zelda is left alone. Start the game similar to Breath of the Wild, where Link is assigned to protect Zelda, and we see Zelda's dependency on Link. I think we can take an interesting angle showing the literal embodiment of courage "leaving" Zelda . Change the tone of the game drastically to reflect this idea of courage having left, but still show Zelda persevering all the same. As she fights on and on, everything feels more and more doable. She becomes more powerful, she is able to lead on by herself. Create emotion, and pomp when they finally reunite and fight Ganon. Let them charge in, not with sheer Power, but with Wisdom and Courage.
Path number 2 that I probably heard from somewhere and I'm not even gonna try to pretend like it's mine although I cannot recall where I heard it: Ganon tries to break the cycle. Ganon, or in this iteration, Ganondorf, is raised in a healthy ass environment. Let's just say the Gerudos raise him to be this kid that truly cares and has a heart, only to realize he is the incarnation of Satan (I think I heard theories about OOT (or was it TP, I can't recall) Ganondorf being somewhat like this, essentially only doing what he did for his people but idk). He meets with Link and Zelda and the entire game revolves around ending the cycle once and for all. Create real emotional bonds between the three, show a true dynamic that goes from distrusting (bc why WOULDN'T you distrust Satan v17.72) to begrudging acceptance, into true camaraderie.
I could probably write more but I can't think of any off the top of my head lol. I don't know if you can tell, but I fucking love deep emotional connections between characters (I would maul man, woman, and child to see more interactions between BOTW Zelda and Link,,, SHAR MY BELOVE-).

OK HEAR ME OUT HERE. The Hollow Knight has spent his whole life with nothing. No emotions, barely any thoughts, it's implied he barely knows his own physical limits until after he's fully trained. He must be entirely empty in order to be considered a candidate. When he is fully trained? He's locked away.
After fighting tooth and nail to get out of the Abyss, filled with horrors beyond the comprehension of most bugs, he is used for his apathy and physical prowess to defeat a Goddess that has been terrorizing the world above him. He has absolutely no part in this, in fact his life was sacrificed to create an empty vessel, along with all his siblings. It is by pure luck that he made it first.
He's used as nothing but a defective weapon. He was trained to fight, but also to care. To care for his father, to care for the citizens of Hallownest, and to care about his cause. He was trained to lose against his enemy.
But tell me, was he truly hollow from the start? In the birthplace flashback we see, when this Knight and your player character Knight reach the top at the same time, it's shown that the Hollow Knight looked back at his siblings, at his home, and watched his siblings fall back to the bottom of the world. Even if he does nothing to help them, he still felt the need to look back at his life as if he was sad or nostalgic.
When he was finally sealed into the Black Egg Temple and filled with the Radiance, an infectious moth Goddess who exists in the minds of her hosts, bringing them back to basic instinct instead of societal living, he lost his battle. He became infected, even after thousands of bugs had died and the 3 most influential bugs of Hallownest had given their lives to protect him. But, he didn't lose everything.
Unlike most bugs under the Infection's control who lose their ability to think and react on their own and just repeat what the Radiance wants of them, he remembers. He has his own will, to an extent. He constantly fights against the Infection in his body trying to use him like a puppet. All while he still retains everything. He remembers everything to the point when his lost sibling appears in battle with him, to save him, he cuts himself down in order for his sibling to truly defeat the Radiance within him; because, all in all, he knows he couldn't stop it.
What does Wind Waker Ganon have? A desire to relive the past. He remembers everything from before Hyrule was frozen and covered with the Great Sea. And yet, he doesn't change.
Zelda, otherwise known as Tetra now, and Link are living their own lives in the Great Sea. Link is happy on a small village with his grandma and little sister. Tetra is a respectable pirate captain. But because of Ganon being unable to accept this narrative, he forces Link's sister away and kidnaps Tetra as the reincarnation of Zelda.
He forces them to become their true colors. Not by saving Hyrule from him again, not by defeating Ganon again, and not by losing to him. No, he brings out their real abilities by trying to destroy them. Everything he does to Link and Tetra only makes them stronger than him. Eventually proving that old Hyrule is gone, and the Great Sea is the new world. That Hyrule should be lost to time.
He inadvertently CREATES the Hero of Winds. He treated Tetra as though she was harmless, forgetting that she knows how to fight, and allowed her to fight back and help Link in the final battle. In treating them both as if they're failures from the Great Sea instead of actual enemies, he creates his own downfall. But he doesn't suffer with this knowledge.
Ganon doesn't realize his mistakes. Not until he is killed once more by the Hero of Winds and the Pirate Princess. It's even debatable if he realizes this in death, or if he only acknowledges this as the Hero of Time and Hyrule's last legacy. While many argue that being oblivious to this makes him more doomed by this narrative, I can't agree.
Where Ganondorf had no clue what he was doing the whole time, the Hollow Knight DID. He saw everything pass by him as he trained, he was taught everything about the Radiance, and he allowed himself to feel even when he knew he shouldn't. He actively created his own shortcomings, and yet he still went through with the plan. He could have been replaced, he could have saved Hallownest from the start with a new knight.
And yet, he became the Martyr willingly. It can even be argued that he was too prideful to believe he'd fail. But Ganondorf? While he was prideful, yes, he was also disillusioned from the start.
Everything he did was viewed through his own sick rose-colored glasses, while the Hollow Knight knew exactly what he was doing. In that way, the Hollow Knight doomed himself willingly, while Ganondorf had no idea what he had done until he was already doomed.

Zelink for the ship bingo? :0 any game!
OH GOD, THIS IS?? Gonna be a doozy. Buckle in.
SkSw:
WW-PH: Link/Tetra:
Spirit Tracks(in theory! I haven't seen the game yet, can't speak personally):
Nearly all other instances:
RIGHT! getting onto individual analysis,
1, SkSw: By far my favourite of the bunch, and a longtime delight. Whether you construe their relationship as romantic or not, doesn't matter-- They've got such a wonderful arc of trust and unbreakable love. Zelda starts off incredibly worried for Link, constantly fretting and deeply unsure of his abilities. She steps in to defend him, willing to go up against Big Boys like Groose to do so. As the game progresses, however, and Link grows, in strength and in character, Zelda, and everyone else for the matter, put more trust in him-- By the end of the game, they're on equal footing, and, oh god, oh man, I'm gonna crybhfgjfhdgkjdjd--
2, WW-PH: Nothing to say except, tough girl, sweet boy? Phuck yeah!
Jokes aside, Link and Tetra's arc is also one of trust and vulnerability, but from a different angle. Tetra's a hard-as-nails, independent, morally dubious young girl who's landed herself as captain of a ship full of Big Boys, and sees Link as little more than a useful, if rather weak coincidence she can use to her advantage. However, as the pair grow,(really as Link grows and Tetra is thrown out onto the sidelines as her royal heritage is revealed and she's forced to take on a 'princess' role, one that notably feminises her and lightens her skin), again there's that theme of growth of trust! They take down Ganondorf together, build a new Hyrule together, and isn't that just what dreams are made of?
3, Spirit Tracks: Nothing much to say, other than the dynamic looks super sweet, and there's an interesting play with gender and presentation on Zelda's end? Love it to bits, 12/10.
Now... Onto the potatoes of this, I think. Get your gravy.
This... There's going to be more objective analysis and criticism, obviously, but alot of this is also going to be deeply coloured by my own personal experiences of heteronormativity and alienation. This isn't a commentary on anyone else's enjoyment of the dynamic-- I hope I've made that clear --But, just... I guess I should get to it.
Link and Zelda,
Zelink.
As one anon put it, the vanilla icecream of shipping.
Mild, sweet,
And incredibly heteronormative.
The Golden Relationship; the one toted by fans and Nintendo alike as "the ship".
Everything else, anyone else, is a deviation. It slots neatly into the expected hero-damsel dynamic that we've had, since, well, the beginning of time, almost. It's almost as dust of the earth as it gets. The issue for me being... They don't spend time much, really. Link is barely characterised half the time as little more than a slightly lackadaisical vessel for the player, and Zelda is a sort of guiding light; a dignified keeper of the plot, Righteous Guardian of Hyrule--
The culmination of all Hyrule presents itself as: wise, smart, beautiful, dainty but compitent, ready to lead a charge should need be... but rarely unruly. Rarely ever. Always right.
Obviously, it goes without saying how Breath of the Wild's iteration of this duo changes it up immensely. Zelda is a far more flawed, and in her attempt to put on a strong face, a far more emotionally vulnerable character than any of her gentle predecessors could ever hope to be. While this pairing and her character fail to hit that particular sweet spot in me, it's deeply intriguing, and I hope, perhaps vainly, that they'll develop her and her relationship with Link even more in the sequel-- Honestly, when it comes to this? An equality between her and Link is, I think, what would be best. A mutual understanding; vulnerability.
I think that's what puts me off from Zelink, on the whole. Link is bound to her, by destiny, by guidance, ever-performing his knightly duties, and Zelda is bound to him for strength, for protection. There's little emotional substance, half the time, save for small, precious moments, many with another face, because it's a dynamic inherently dependent on the war-- On danger.
It's all impartial, situational. There's nothing personal here.
And if that were it, if this were truly explored from that angle(as it is, to an extent, in BotW), then I think I'd like that-- Especially if it weren't romantic, I feel.
But that's not the vibe we're told to get: not from the fans... not from Nintendo.
Nintendo tends to be largely neutral on certain matters, such as pairings-- Honest to god, for the best, in my opinion-- But Zelink is that one blind spot where that ethos falls away. Here, Nintendo expects us to see it as some grand, destiny-bound romance, I feel,
And the pre-Skyward Sword manga, from what I know, cements this best.
It's why, quite frankly, I don't care for the idea of it being canon. Genuinely.
It undermines what little weight Ganondorf via Demise had on all of this, this horrific cycle of blood, pain and despair, always bracing for the next wave, of the sisyphian climb of this civilisation, and turns it all into a grand goddess' love for a boy bound to her by fate and destiny manifest.
I hate that.
For something like this, something where no one has any choice, where greatness is thrusted upon them, this endless state of being used that Skyward Sword even condemned, to be seen as good.
To get onto personal experience, before this blog, and this "persona," as it were, I used to have an art account where I largely posted TLoZ, frequented by my family. My very Christian, somewhat socially-conservative family. I would perform straightness, in the form of either pushing aside or pursuing M/F romance, because I was extremely uneasy about the types of conversations anything otherwise would arouse.
This was at a time where I wasn't even sure if I was bisexual, let alone divergent in my gender, so I felt a constant pressure to tamp it down and keep it out of the spotlight, relegating my explorations via art to DMs with the friends I'd make.
Here, on Tumblr, where peppy-queerness is the status quo, there's this tendency to gloss over unpleasant things and make them soft; sweet.
I think I've talked enough at length why that alienates me.
So, yeah... I guess, Zelink on a wider scale kinda just, sums up my unease about the often hegemonic status-quo of shipping, and on the whole I'm just kinda eh about it all.
Again, I think it should be very clear that this is not a reflection on my opinions of people who create Zelink content, who are attached to these characters. That sort of weirdly-tribalistic thinking is awful, and only brings about needless conflict-- Early 2000s-2010s kinda shit, y'feel me?
I hope this all made sense, kinda. I've just got... alot of feelings.

royal pain in the ass- chapter 6
Chapter 6: Era of the Great Sea Captain Tetra saves some castaways.
[first] - [previous] - [next] read it on ao3!
△ ▲△
There was just something about Outset Island.
Tetra hated pretty much everything about it. The people there were soft, even the fishermen who spent their days hunting down the monsters of the sea. Everyone was preoccupied with their simple lives. Rearing their children, washing their clothes and hanging them to dry, playing with wooden swords…
They all went on like this, day after day, as though a great and powerful kingdom did not lay in ruins, miles below the sea.
But still, some little part of Tetra couldn’t help but want it. She wanted that simple life, to live without a care in the world. The burden on her shoulders was heavy, but the time she’d spent on Link’s little island, where nobody needed anything from her, had lifted it.
So when she found Link on Outset, of all places, well… that just sweetened the deal, didn’t it?
Rats… Wind was his name, now, wasn’t it? At least for now it was.
The best part of Outset, though, had to be the woods. The Forest of Fairies was quiet these days, which perhaps made it all the more ideal in Tetra’s opinion. She never got a second alone on her ship, not truly, but she could here.
Gently, she placed a hand on one of the trees, tracing the grooves in its bark. She was familiar with this one. When the Helmaroc King dropped her, it was this tree that she fell into, the branches snagging on her clothes. And then she met Wind.
Goddesses, where would she be without Wind? If this one, special, stupid kid hadn’t found her that day. Part of her wanted to think she could have taken Ganondorf on her own, and that was the part of her she let control the narrative.
Still, the Forest of Fairies was beautiful. Tetra could only hope their new home would have places half as pretty. With its cool breeze rustling fallen leaves, the ever-present smell of fresh dew, and gentle harp strumming…
Wait. Who the hell was playing the harp up here?!
Her good mood thoroughly ruined, Tetra followed the sound of the harp. Eventually, she came upon one of the heroes, sitting at the forest’s cliff.
What was his name? Cloud? No, that’s close, but not right… What’s a Hero of the Clouds, anyway? That sounded stupid. Hero of the Sun? Hero of the… Wind? No wait-
Sky! It’s Sky!
Yikes, though. Sky didn’t look so good. He kept plucking at the strings of his harp, but each time he only made it a few notes in before wincing. There were dark circles under his eyes, which kept darting up towards his clear, blue namesake with desperation.
Tetra almost left right then and there.
But there was a voice in the back of her head, one that sounded a bit like Wind, a bit like an old king. A princess would try to help her people.
Ugh. Fine. This would be a good practice run, anyway.
“Hey, buddy,” Tetra awkwardly tried to put on her cheerful princess voice. “What’s- what’s up?”
Sky looked back at her, almost no emotion on his face. “Oh, Zelda.”
“It’s Tetra,” she responded instinctively, mentally cringing at her own bluntness. She’s trying to be nice now!
“Right, Tetra,” Sky nodded, as if reminding himself. “I have a question for you.”
“Alright, I can answer questions.” Tetra took a seat next to Sky, letting her legs dangle off the cliff’s edge. “What do you want to know?”
“Your Hyrule,” he gestured towards the Great Sea, expanding as far as the eye could see. “How did it come to be this way?”
Right, this guy’s the first one. “Well, Ganondorf was sealed in the Evil Realm,” she started.
“Then what happened?”
“He broke free. The people of Hyrule, they prayed to the Goddesses to save them from his wrath, and-” Tetra swallowed. “And they flooded the land.”
For a moment, Sky was silent. His grip on his harp was tight, and for a moment, Tetra was concerned he’d break it. It was such a nice piece of treasure, after all, and it’d be a shame if it were harmed.
Finally, he spoke again. “How many died?”
“What?” Tetra almost shouted, certain she’d misheard him.
“When the flood came, how many died?” Sky reiterated, his gaze focused on the waves lapping at Outset’s shore.
“I- I don’t…” she sputtered helplessly. “I don’t know.”
“This is the legacy I’ve left the world,” Sky said. “What did their blind faith bring them?”

Standing on the stern of her ship, Captain Tetra takes in a deep breath and sighs. There’s nothing like the open ocean, is there? Cutting through the waves, the smell of salt in the night air…
With Wind gone on his little hero quest, searching for new land has taken a backseat. He would kill her if she even thought about founding her kingdom without him there by her side. Well, at least try to. They both know who would really win that fight.
But it’s not so bad. New Hyrule can wait, Tetra has a chance to focus on some of her own passions.
“Captain!” It’s Gonzo, Tetra’s right-hand man. He stops a few feet behind her. “We’ve spotted the Ghost Ship at Greatfish Isle!”
Like hunting down and destroying every last Ghost Ship on the high fucking seas.
“Excellent.” Tetra smirks. “Alter course for Greatfish. We’re going to destroy some undead tonight.”
“Uh, that’s just it, Captain,” Gonzo says. “There’s people on the island, yeah? And they’re fighting the monsters!”
“What?!” Tetra snaps back towards her subordinate. “Who would be stupid enough to fight a Ghost Ship?!”
△ ▲△
Of course, the second they noticed the ship, that’s when the undead started jumping onto their islet.
“Get it off get it off get it off get it off!” Flora desperately shouts as, using the Magnesis Rune, she slams the shield from Artemis down onto the Stalfos that has an iron-tight grip on her ankle.
“Flora, use the shield!” Dusk shouts over her shoulder, focused more on parrying off the sword of a Stalfos. In the same swift movement, she drives her rapier cleanly into its skull. As much as Artemis hates to admit it, Dusk is good. “Don’t make it a mallet!”
“She knows what she’s doing!” Artemis contends, just as her sword meets the lantern of a poe. “She doesn’t need you telling her what to do!”
“Now isn’t the time for arguing with each other!” Sun’s exasperation drips off her words. She’s just barely able to duck, dodging a swing from a Stalfos. On the ground, she kicks a leg out, knocking the walking skeleton off its feet.
Artemis’s eye twitches, and she snaps back around in anger. “I’m just saying-!”
But that moment of distraction was just a smidge too much. The Poe rises behind her, raising its glowing hand, preparing for the one, fatal strike. But before Flora can even gasp, or Sun can yell for her to watch out-
BANG!
The Poe’s lantern shatters, and with an agonizing shriek, it disappears.
There’s another ship in the water, bearing a red and white sail with two crossed swords. And there, gripping onto a rope as she leans off the bowsprit, is Tetra, the barrel of her gun smoking.
“Tetra!” Artemis could breathe a sigh of relief. “Thank the Goddess you’re here!”
Tetra blinks, taken aback for a moment. “Queenie?! I thought the Time War was over!”
“Fight now, talk later!” Sun shouts over the Stalfos she has in a headlock.
Tetra nods, tilting her head back towards her ship. “Boys! Lend them a hand!”
At her word, a crew of men lapel down from the ship and into the shallow waters. With their cutlasses drawn, they begin slicing away at the Poes and Stalfos attacking the stranded ladies.
Tetra sharply whistles, catching Artemis’s attention. “Queenie, take your best, leave the other two behind! We’re boarding that ship!”
Artemis bites her cheek. Her best, huh?
Well, there was no doubt about which of them had the most training.
“Dusk!” she cups her mouth as she yells.
And Dusk almost instantaneously freezes, her rapier dropping slightly as she looks at Artemis, her eyes wide.
“Come with me to the ship!” Artemis points towards the Ghost Ship. “We need you!”
For a moment, a very brief one, Dusk doesn’t react. Then, she smirks, a smugness only a queen could have.
“It’s about time,” she says.
△ ▲△
The second they step into the Ghost Ship’s hull, Dusk’s nose wrinkles. “I can practically feel the dust in the air.”
The whole interior of the ship seems to be filled with smog, solidifying the undead ambience. Its wooden walls groan as it’s rocked by the sea, giving off the same eerie blue lighting it had on the outside. Below them, on the ship’s bottom, were monsters. Poes and ReDeads.
“We need to get back there,” Tetra gestures towards the back of the ship with her cutlass. “Once we take the treasure, the ship will disappear.”
“Right, because you’re pirates,” Dusk crosses her arms. “Remind me how you two know each other, again?”
Artemis and Tetra exchange a glance. “The War Across the Ages,” the former explains. “We recruited many individuals adrift from their own eras.”
“But pirates? Really?” Dusk gestures to Tetra with a hand.
“I’ll have you know, I’m the greatest pirate who ever sailed this sea,” Tetra jabs her thumb towards herself.
Artemis rolls her eyes. “Come on you two, behave. Youre cousins, after all.”
“Wh-what?!” Dusk sputters. “I thought you said her name was Tetra!”
Tetra snorts. “Yeah, but to some people, it’s Princess Zelda.” She holds out her hand, winking at Dusk. “Welcome to the family, cousin!”
Hesitantly, Dusk shakes her hand. Tetra responds with a shocking amount of vigor.
“Now that that’s settled,” Artemis claps her hands together. “How about we defeat some undead?”
As if answering her question, Tetra shoots right at the ReDead’s skull. While her bullet is enough to defeat the single ReDead, the sound also draws the attention of the other monsters on the ship. Slowly, they begin shambling towards the ledge the ladies stand on.
“Oh great,” Dusk mutters to herself. “There goes our element of surprise.”
“Dusk, we should stick together,” Artemis suggests, careful in her phrasing as she draws her rapier. “We can watch each other’s backs.”
With a nod, Dusk retrieves her own sword. “Let’s go,” is the only thing she says before she jumps off the ledge.
△ ▲△
These new guys, Sun decides, are good. They’re decent with their swords, though she knows they’d be better if they’d attended the Knight’s Academy. At least they’re good enough to make up for both Artemis and Dusk’s absences.
One of the taller pirates slices clean through the neck of a Stalfos, its head landing just at Sun’s feet. Rearing her foot up, she crushes it under her boot. Of course, she’d never admit it, but that crunch! is such a sweet sound. Like music to her ears.
Sun’s ears twitch slightly as they pick up the faint sound of clanging metal. She’s just in time to duck again, missing a swing from an angry Poe.
“Hey, pirates!” she shouts, hoping to catch the attention of at least one of them. “Think one of you can take this for me?”
The tall one with the bandana nods, quickly moving himself between Sun and the Poe. She sighs. She just isn’t equipped to deal with that, today. Maybe if she’d remembered to bring a sword…
Sure, hand-to-hand combat isn’t usually her first choice, but Sun has grown to appreciate it over the past few minutes. Hylia, not just appreciate it. She loves it, more than she ever thought she would. Who would have guessed that punching things would be so fun?
“Well, well, look who’s decided to grace us with her presence.”
Oh, that sounds considerably less fun!
Turning behind her, Sun sees what must be the monster Artemis and Flora told her about. Because as her eyes lay on him, it’s almost as if his form is wobbling, before solidifying into a figure she knows well.
It’s a shadow of Sky. A representation of her Link, but if he was dunked in black paint and given terrifying red eyes.
“I’ve heard of you,” Sun’s eyes narrow at Dark Link.
“Ah, and I know you, your grace,” Dark Link laughs, and though it’s cruel and contemptuous, some part of her head thinks, ‘That’s familiar.’
“But tell me,” he continues. “What’s Hylia herself doing so far from home?”
Sun freezes, her blood running cold. “How did you…? Who are you?”
“What, you don’t recognize your own hero?” Dark Link frowns mockingly. “You know, I thought he’d take the longest to crack, but just a few whispers about the sea, and-” he abruptly snaps. “He was as good as gone. Now that fairy brat, on the other hand…”
“Stop it,” Sun snaps at him. “Just tell me where they are.”
“Oh? And why would you care?” The shadow tilts his head, and for a moment, his confusion almost seems genuine. “You goddesses have never cared for the fates of your heroes.”
And then, there’s a spark inside of Sun, and it sets her whole mind on fire. “I am not Hylia,” she asserts, grabbing onto his arm. “I. Am. ZELDA!”
It’s a moment of pure focus, the first time she’s ever said anything like that aloud, let alone screamed it. Unfortunately, it’s also a moment of distraction, just as Dark Link wanted. He draws his shadowy Master Sword, raises it above his head, and-
“SUN!”
Suddenly, Flora pushes Sun out of the way. The sword’s hilt strikes her head with a loud, sickening CRACK! She ends up collapsing right on top of her ancestor.
“Flora!” Sun gasps, tilting the scholar’s chin up to get a better look at her. After such a nasty blow, it makes sense that she’s out cold. But there’s blood, a lot of it, practically running down her face from above her left eye.
“You hurt her!” Sun exclaims, drawing Flora as close as she can bring her. “You son of a-!”
But, just then, they’re interrupted by two more shouts. In all the hassle, Sun hadn’t even noticed the Ghost Ship’s disappearance. Dusk, Artemis, and Tetra stand on the shore, staring right at the mess in front of them.
In an almost simultaneous burst of light, Artemis and Dusk summon their Bows of Light. Tetra draws her pistol, all three taking aim at Dark Link.
“Not another move, asshat,” Tetra warns him. “Attacking a princess is rude, you know.”
“She’s a queen,” Artemis informs her.
“Attacking a queen is rude, you know,” Tetra amends.
“Well,” Dark Link raises his hands above his head. “It seems we’re at an impasse.” He catches Sun’s eye one last time. “Farewell for now, your grace.”
Before any shots can be fired, Dark Link’s shadowy mass collapses in on itself. Like a splash of water, he sinks into the ground and disappears.
As the adrenaline fades from her body, Sun suddenly looks down at the bleeding body in her arms. She tightens her grip around her descendant, instinctively covering Flora’s wound with her hands.
“Oh no,” she mutters to herself as her fingers turn red. “Guys! We need help!”
△ ▲△
It’s just a head wound, Tetra told them. And a head wound means it looks worse than it is, and it’ll bleed more than usual. Flora’s fine, she insists, she’ll wake up soon. All they have to do is keep an eye on her bandages and wait.
“I mean, you’ve seen my Link,” Tetra explains, leaning against her ship’s railing. “He gets a concussion every other week. He’s bounced back from worse than what Flora has.”
There really was no reason to stay on Greatfish any longer, now that they had Tetra and her crew. She’d been so generous as to waive the transport fee, something about a family discount that Artemis didn’t really hear. They’re heading to Windfall Island, so that they can restock their supplies before the next portal appears.
Flora was set up in one of the bedrooms below deck, tucked safely into one of the beds. Artemis has taken it upon herself to remain by her side, at least until she wakes up. She’s just so pale, and she hasn’t moved an inch…
As the first rays of light touch the sea, there’s a light knock on the door.
“Come in,” Artemis calls out, rising from her chair at Flora’s bedside.
The door creaks open, and Dusk pops her head in. “How’s she doing?” she asks, tilting her head towards Flora.
“No change,” Artemis crosses her arms and sighs. “I know Tetra said this is normal, but still…”
Dusk steps into the cabin, closing the door behind her with a sigh. “Sun’s a bit of a wreck. I told her I’d check in on Flora if she ate something.”
“She doesn’t blame herself, does she?” Artemis questions, wringing her hands together.
“The hit was intended for her, from what I can gather,” Dusk reveals. She gently places a hand at the top of Flora’s head. “You’re quite brave.”
Artemis smiles weakly, sitting back in her chair. “How are you holding up, Dusk?”
“I’ll admit, pirate ships aren’t as bad as I thought,” Dusk chuckles lightly. “It’s quite cozy here.”
“Dusk, I’m-” Artemis starts, but she swallows and starts again. “I’m sorry. You haven’t really spent that much time travelling before, and it was irresponsible of me to assume you’d feel comfortable with it immediately.”
“Artemis,” Dusk sighs. She kneels next to her, taking her hands into her own. “I should be the one apologizing. You were trying your best, but… I’m sorry, I was rude about your night watch, and I really ruined the whole thing, didn’t I?”
“Oh come on,” Artemis scoffs, but for once, there’s no malice behind her words. Her hands return Dusk’s grip with a tight squeeze. “You clearly weren’t okay with it, and I took that personally instead of making sure you were alright.”
“I just…” Dusk purses her lips together. “I’m scared of being alone in the dark.”
“Then you won’t have to cover any watches,” Artemis asserts. “But, you know, I spent a lot of time in a warped version of your era. I even met the most peculiar woman, a princess of the Twilight Realm…”
Dusk gasps. “You met Midna.”
“I did,” she nods. “So if you ever need someone to talk to, please consider me.”
Wordlessly, Dusk leans forward and pulls Artemis into what might be the warmest hug she’s felt in years. And instinctually, Artemis hugs her back.
For a long time, they stay like that.
“You know, I never figured it out,” Dusk suddenly speaks. “Flora’s down the family tree, and Sun’s up it. When exactly does the War Across the Ages take place?”
“From your perspective? You have about two-hundred years to go,” Artemis reveals. “You’re my grandmother a few times over, by the way.”
“What?!” Dusk suddenly draws back. “Why didn’t you lead with that?!”
△ ▲△
Waking up is quite the process. When Flora opens her eyes for the first time, her vision is blurry. Like the world’s been spun around. Just barely, she’s able to lift her head, though her neck protests such movements.
There, sitting at the edge of her bed, though. That has to be Mipha. Who else would wait for her like that, within arm’s reach should she need an extra bit of healing?
Out of the corner of her eye, she can see Daruk and Urbosa just a few feet away. They’re talking to each other, maybe about her. Their tones are quiet and subdued, though. And Revali! Revali is waiting, just by the door. That's just like him to hover, even if he pretends not to.
‘Did I pass out in the spring again?’ she wonders.
“Flora?”
But then, she blinks, and it’s almost as though the scene shifts. It’s Sun sitting on her bed, a look of hope clear on her face. Artemis and Dusk freeze, gaping at Flora’s awakening. Tetra is the one who’s by the door, though she’s clearly keeping her distance.
Right. Of course.
“Flora!” Sun springs to her feet. “You’re okay!”
And then, before Flora’s sluggish mind can catch up with her, Sun wraps her up into a tight hug. Flora’s head throbs at the sudden, jerky movement.
“Ow…” Flora groans.
Sun gasps in shock, dropping Flora back onto her pillow. “Sorry!”
“Hylia’s fucking tits-” Tetra curses, missing Sun covering her chest with an arm at those words. She pushes herself between Sun and Flora. “Do none of you know how to handle head injuries? Stop moving her around!”
“I’m sorry, it’s just-” Sun awkwardly fidgets with her fingers. “She got hurt because of me! I need to make sure she’s okay!”
“And I want to make sure my travels with you four start off on the right foot,” Tetra insists. “Without anyone dying.”
“I’m fine,” Flora croaks out.
Dusk gestures a hand to the young queen. “See? She’s fine.”
“You’ve decided you’re coming with, then?” Artemis suddenly appears at Flora’s side, lightly patting her head. “You didn’t need much convincing.”
Tetra shrugs. “I figure I owe Link this much. He’d do the same for me.”
“Woo,” Flora weakly cheers, lamely raising a fist in celebration.
Artemis gently pushes her hand down. “We’ve still got a few days left on the Great Sea, Flora, don’t get your hopes up. We’re not going anywhere until that head wound of yours closes.”
“Aw…” Flora pouts, crossing her arms.
“Get some rest, kid,” Dusk instructs her. “You look like you need it.”
“You,” Flora points to Tetra, though there’s already a drowsiness to her words. “You’re going to tell me more about your time.”
Tetra nods mockingly, taking Flora’s hand into her own. “When you wake up, your majesty.”

RANKING THE ZELDAS
disclaimer: theyre all gorgeous
LINK TO THE PAST
look at this. even since the very start shes been an absolute goddess. dont really like the red pearl necklace though.. the rest of it is nice. her lil triforce earrings are pretty sick, where can i get those? 6/10 only because there are still others i like more but shes still good.
OCARINA OF TIME
yesssss kill em queen we got this FRESH headwear and that ugly red pearl necklace? gone. good honey you go. idk why the undershirt has another undershirt though that seems a bit over the top, but then again shes pretty young so does she even pick her outfits? eh. shes cute 6/10
FOUR SWORDS
is she a ginger? i actually like that hair color on her a lot. but.. what are those horn things? is this a homestuck cosplay? now i kinda wanna draw that ngl, but anyways.. i think this look would be better without the horn things or the split cape. or maybe the split cape but instead of a dress shes wearing pants like zelda from the loz cartoon. 5/10
WIND WAKER
okay, so id put tetra here (i love her) but the post is princess zelda so i kinda wanna rank the princess outfits. tetras amazing though and just for her the wind waker zelda gets an automatic 7/10. anyways, her dress is pretty and it looks comfortable compared to the others. i dont really like the red pearls (again) but hey, they arent too bad. i love the little feathers on her head. 7/10
TWILIGHT PRINCESS
alright, this is where she stops being cute and she starts being stunning.. i mean look at her shes so gorgeous here. her hair is very nice, i like what she does with it. theres not as much red, which, when it comes to princess zelda, i like. her jewel is greenish which is sweet cause it sorta nods to link or midna (both are very viable options for girlfriend and boyfriend material) but also, green is nice on her. shes very stoic serious pretty lady and im a sucker for that. 8/10
SKYWARD SWORD
YESSSSSSS im so excited to talk about herrrr! so she has the same twilight princess ribbon think but theyre colorful! and GREEEN! green and pink! i also like that they didnt give her a headpiece because she isnt really that royal in this game. her bangs are very cute and her outfit is .. how do i say this, like, homey sort of? it makes me feel good. shes so sweet and protective of link in this game (you guys remember the protective gf scene with groose) so.. idk.. 8/10? pretty close to 9 for me.
HYRULE WARRIORS
like link, i truly believe this zelda is the most attractive. the color pallette really blends (violets and rose) and her dress is actually more like a cape. she wears these badass combat boots and guess what else? SHE HAS A SWORD!! you can play as her!! and she KICKS ASS! this has to be one of my favorite zeldas of all time (besides the cartoon zelda, and yes, that is unironic, sadly) just because of how cool she is. all of her dialogue in the game is like 'get away from my castle!' or 'im not going down like this' and it makes me feel POWERFUL haha. same rating for the hyrule warriors link- 10/10.
BREATH OF THE WILD
ok OKAY. listen up! this zelda is PERFECTION! her outfits are all super amazing, i ADORE her traveling outfit because theres pants!! shes wearing pants!!! and her dlc outfits are so awesome. and yknow what? i think her voice actor was fine so stop being so mean yall. i still like her just fine with that voice! i feel so bad for her because she had to hold out for 100 years.. and longer.. using all her power to prevent the downfall of the world while all of her friends and family were either dead or trying not to die. she has all her painful memories and just.. sorry honey you deserved better. she had an actual struggle, even BEFORE the calamity. she felt like she didnt understand herself and that she was helpless and in the end when she sees link, she knows everything will be okay. its just.. delightfully heartbreaking? im not sure how else to say it, but its breathtaking. 10/10!

I'm asking again because I absolutely adore your work! You write the Links telling stories amazingly. It truly feels that Wild was telling the stories. Could write the all Links talking about their loves. It would be mix of fluff and angst because we have Sky and Time, who are both happy with their respective partners, but we also have Wild, Twilight, and Legend who I imagine are all lost in their own ways. I have not played all the games so feel free to interpret how you wish!
Hi again! Thank you! I'm so glad you like my work! I haven’t played all the Zelda games either, but I have watched many playthroughs. I have played Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, and BOTW, and I’m going to play Link’s Awakening after I’m done with Hollow Knight, because unfortunately that’s all I have access too with the game systems I have. But I have watched playthroughs of the rest! So thank you for letting me have my own interpretation because I see a lot of the relationships besides the ones you mentioned and more platonic. I think Wind and Tetra would be sweet but they’re twelve during the game ya know? I apologize there is less storytelling in this one, but I feel a lot of them wouldn't be quite ready to spill all the beans. Hope you enjoy!
Time didn’t really know how it had descended this far into chaos. One moment, Warriors was telling a tale of a ‘grand exploit’ in a tavern in his Hyrule, the next, there was screaming and yelling and multiple ‘innocent young ears’ being covered. Time thinks it all started when in the middle of the story, Warriors was telling them about a beautiful young lady he had met, to which Legend groaned and rolled his eyes. Instantly Warriors’ smile grew sharp and his eyes filled with teasing and mischief. Time knew that look, that was the look that promised Warriors was about to do anything to make the other boy uncomfortable, even making up the rest of the story if he had too.
Yes that’s certainly what began this quick but entertaining descent into Hell. Warriors began to tell how this young woman just ‘couldn’t keep her hands to herself’ as he stared right into Legend’s soul. Of course, Legend, not one to back down from a challenge, began yelling about his experiences in the tavern, also probably made up, and started screaming about a young lady who ‘really liked his magic items’ to which led Sky to yelling at both of them to keep quiet as he covered Wind’s ears. Wind then laughed and covered Hyrule’s ears, who giggled and reached up and covered Sky’s ears to create a Triforce of protecting the innocent. Twilight, seeing this happening, smirked and covered Wild’s ears to which he fought vehemently but Twilight wouldn’t budge. Four was shifting expressions so fast it was hard to keep track, from amused, to annoyed, to horrified, to resigned, and then a weird combination of all of them.
Legend and Warriors continued screaming at each other, and as entertaining as it was, if Time didn’t stop them soon they would be screaming all night.
“Gentleman. While I’m sure many of us enjoy hearing your exploits, I think the entire forest doesn’t feel the same way.” Time voiced, causing Warriors and Legend to blush and grumble while the rest of the group laughed.
“Yeah, yeah we get it Old Man. You have a beautiful and loving wife at home.” Warriors teased back.
“Your point?” Time smirked.
“Yeah Warriors, just cause you don’t want to settle down don’t mean we feel the same way.” Twilight called from the other side of the campfire as Wild finally fought his way out of Twi’s strong hold.
“Who said I never want to settle down, goat boy?” Warriors called back.
“You called my wedding ring a shackle.” Time chuckled.
“Well sure it is. But who knows if I want a shackle one day.” The camp laughed at this.
“This mean you got someone Captain? Perhaps your Zelda?” Legend teased.
“No, my Zelda is amazing, and badass to boot. But I don’t really feel that way about her, at least not now.” Warriors smiled.
“Yeah, same with my Zelda. I’m not sure how she feels about me anyway.” Hyrule sighed.
“Same here.” Legend said simply, though the group could see a haunted look in his eyes. No one mentioned it, Legend would speak up if he wanted to, and most likely not in front of the entire group.
“You don’t have to marry Zelda. I love my Zelda but not romantically.” Time stated gently to Hyrule.
“Yeah I know. I guess I’m still kinda shocked you got married Time.” Hyrule blushed when he realized how bad that sounded as Warriors held back a laugh disguised as a cough. “I didn’t mean it like that! I just meant that I always thought heroes didn’t really settle down. They kept saving and saving.” Hyrule finished with his hands up in a placating manner, but Time wasn’t offended at all.
“I know buddy. As I said, it took me years to see through that lie. I’m happy with Malon, and I’m out here with you boys too. You can take time for yourself too, it’s not selfish.” Time smiled softly at Hyrule. Although he didn’t mean to, Time’s words sent a stab of guilt through some of the other members. He should be home with his beautiful and loving wife. Not here on another quest after he had done so much already. But they sure were grateful to have him.
“What about you Wild?” Wind asked. “You and your Zelda seem really close from what you’ve told us.”
“Um, well I’m not sure.” Wild rubbed the back of his neck. “I love her, and I know I did before, but I don’t know if I can imagine us you know, kissing and stuff.” Wild blushed as laughter roared up.
“Very elequantly put, Wild.” Warriors cackled.
“You got plently of time to figure that out Cub.” Twilight clapped a hand on his shoulder as the laughter died down.
“What are you laughing for, Wind?” Warriors ruffled his hair as Wind knocked his arm away. “You always talk about Tetra.” Warriors smirked as Wind sputtered and flushed a deep pink up to his ears.
“Tetra’s awesome! I wish she were here to kick your ass for saying that!” Wind yelled as he smacked Warriors’ shoulder.
Four elbowed Sky. “What about you lover boy. You wanna talk about your Zelda?” Four teased as Sky’s face lit up.
“Ugh don’t get him started he won’t shut up for the rest of the night.” Legend grumbled. But it was too late. Sky had already begun.
“She’s amazing. She can play the harp and sing like Hylia herself.” Sky started with a dreamy look on his face. “One time before the Wing Ceremony, she thought I was being lazy and pushed me off of Skyloft to try and get me to call my Loftwing, but he had been put in a place he couldn’t reach me. So she had to save me herself.” Sky still had that dopey look on his face as his brothers snickered at his story.
As Sky rambled on about his Zelda, Twilight’s eyes had grown clouded, staring at the stars peeking through the warm orange glow of the coming twilight. Wild would catch him doing this sometimes, and it always looked like Twilight was having a bittersweet memory. Wild glanced over at Time, making sure he noticed too, he was Twi’s mentor afterall. Time made eye contact with Wild and gave a small nod to acknowledge he was on the same page Wild was. Before either of them could do anything, Warriors spoke up.
“What about you country boy? You have someone?” Warriors asked and the rest of camp perked up. Twilight had never talked about his love life, besides a few jokes about ‘his heart being shattered’. Hopefully he was exaggerating…
“Uhh no.” Twilight responded after snapping out of his daze to find the entire camp looking at him curiously.
“Does this have anything to do with the princess you talked about when Wild showed us his scars?” Four asked carefully, trying to portray that he wasn’t trying to overstep any bounds.
“Yeah I guess so…” Twilight trailed off. Legend felt something cold in his heart at this conversation. He could tell Twilight lost his love, because he had seen that same expression in the mirror for years. He wanted to help Twilight know he wasn’t alone, he wasn’t the only one that had his heart shattered by things out of his control. The boy had always been a sturdy shoulder for all of them, it was time he returned the favor. He just didn’t know how without revealing too much or making Twilight uncomfortable.
“There was a girl once.” Legend’s voice emerged from the silence. “Hair more red than you can imagine. She lived on an island I… found but… I did something wrong. My curiosity got the best of me, and now she and the island are gone.” Legend got out as little of the story as possible as quickly as possible while still seemingly indifferent. It was one thing to open up to all of his brothers, but it was another to cry in front of them. He couldn’t.
Twilight seemed genuinely surprised Legend had spoken up about what was haunting him. Legend was sure that the others were just as shocked but he only looked at Twilight. He wanted Twi to know he wasn’t the only one. He needed Twi to know he wasn’t the only one. Talking about it was humiliating and almost impossible and just downright painful. He needed Twi to know he had been there too. Twi gave him a gentle and understanding look, one that told Legend he understood what he was trying to do, and that he was more than grateful and supportive of him. Warriors set a gentle hand on his shoulder, slow enough that he could pull away if he needed to. Legend allowed it, but nothing more. It’s more for that idiot’s peace of mind anyway. He didn’t take any comfort in it at all…
“My companion on my quest was awful to me at first.” Twilight’s voice rang out to replace Legend’s in the silence around the campfire. “She was awful to me at first but we started to talk more along the way and we became closer. Then she just… left. I don’t know what I did wrong…” Twilight trailed off, once again looking at the quickly fading twilight above. He wanted to talk more about it, and he could tell Legend did too. They just weren’t ready yet.
Wild bit his lip. Time was much better at comforting Twilight, but he was on the other side of the fire and making a move to be next to him would draw attention Twilight didn’t want. Wild leaned some of his weight against the older boy. He had to at least try to comfort him after all Twilight had done for Wild since they met. Twilight smiled slightly when he felt the weight and leaned back. It wasn’t much, but it was enough.
“I don’t think you did anything wrong Twilight.” Wild spoke quietly, messing with the hem of his tunic. “I mean you talked about your companion being from the Twilight Realm right?” Twilight nodded slightly, looking pained. “Well maybe she had to go for another reason? I’m not saying you should just forget.” Wild rushed to say. “But maybe it was really complicated if both of you were growing closer to each other and she wasn’t as mean as before?” Wild finished his words with a question. Twilight never told him enough about his companion to know for sure what really happened. But he could at least try to comfort his mentor.
Twilight looked down at Wild and smirked, but it lacked the tease it normally had, it held gratitude and love. “Thanks, Cub.” Twilight said simply, then reached out a hand to quickly ruffle the youngers’ hair. Wild yelped and slapped his hand away. Relief overwhelmed the boys in the group, thankful that the atmosphere had lifted slightly.
“I know it’s not the same.” Warriors started once the others had settled down. “But there was this woman. She was the main one who tried to take the Triforce for herself other than Ganon. Apparently she was supposed to protect the Triforce, but she… fell in love with me.” Warriors waited for the teasing to begin. He knew he made many jokes about the women he had met, but it seemed the group could tell this sometimes plagued his mind.
“That was one of the reasons she started the war that I fought in. I found out later that her light was driven from her to create my friend Lana, so she became completely dark. I had to fight in her temple and there were pictures of me all over the walls and…” Warriors paused. He couldn’t talk about his overconfidence yet. He couldn’t talk about his mistakes that led to Dark Link. What if the others hated him for it? “I don’t know it may sound silly. But having someone obsessed with you like that is, scary I guess. I mean, people died in those battles, because she was jealous of Zelda and me but I’m not even sure how I feel about Zelda. She died and I couldn’t help but feel guilty. I know I’m not required to have feelings for her, especially after all she had done, but it still made me feel… I don’t know.” Warriors sighed. Legend leaned slightly into Warriors’ hand on his shoulder. He never knew Warriors had that part of his story. The rest of the group felt twangs in their hearts at Warriors’ confused tone.
“It’s not your fault Warriors.” Wind smiled up at him. “You’re right. You shouldn't force yourself to feel that way for anyone. The war wasn’t your fault.” Warriors smiled down at his small companion and nodded in thanks.
“Wind is right.” Hyrule stated quietly. “There were people after me because of the Triforce. That doesn’t mean it’s our fault.” No one mentioned that the word ‘were’ sounded a little strained. they’d have to keep an eye on him in his Hyrule it seemed.
“Thanks guys.” Warriors grinned. It was a little more troubled than his usual grin, but it was a welcome sign nonetheless. Sky looked a little guilty at having proclaimed his love so confidently. Four pat his shoulder and shook his head. Sky shouldn’t feel guilty for being happy. None of the other boys would ever want that.
“Look at all of us.” Legend teased with a wry smile. The rest of the group chuckled slightly. The atmosphere wasn’t as happy as it had been, but there was an odd relief, like the relief after crying. A bittersweet acceptance that hearts had been broken, but they still had brothers to fall back on. The group could tell no one else was ready to talk about anything else for the night, so they began to settle in. Surprisingly, Twilight laid his bedroll near Legend that night. While no tears were shed, the group was still exhausted from a long day of travel. After the other heroes had settled down, Twilight laid awake, looking at the stars. He knew Legend would be up too, the hero never seemed to sleep right away. And now Twilight had suspicions why after his tale.
“Hey Legend?” Twilight whispered after he was positive everyone was asleep, save Four, who was on the outskirts of camp keeping watch, too far away to hear their whispers.
“What?” Legend pretended to look annoyed but Twilight could see the curiosity in his eyes.
“What was her name?” Twilight asked quietly, praying that he hadn’t crossed a line. When Legend didn’t answer, he figured he would apologize and awkwardly turn over in his bedroll and pretend to sleep.
“Marin…” Legend whispered the name with such sadness, but such awe that it threw Twilight for a loop. “Your companion?” Legend questioned back.
“Midna.”

Actual Headcanons
Sort of
Okay so
Who starts the conversation?
-Before the Calamity, Zelda. Link would make comments here and there but he wouldn’t talk unless asked something. After the Calamity, Link starts the conversation. Solely because he’s already adjusted to how everything is. He goes on and on about the new things and things he misses, his adventures while he was getting stronger so he can beat Ganon. Zelda listens to all his stories, having seen them all from afar while she was fighting Ganon, but loves hearing all the details.
Who wakes up first?
-For someone who fought Ganon for 100 years straight without a break, Zelda is always the first one up. Link’s sleep schedule was so out of whack before they defeated Ganon, and now that it’s reached some sort of stable schedule he sleeps until Zelda wakes him up. She usually goes to the Ancient Tech Lab to hang out with Purah at dawn, so she can catch up on all the progress they’ve made over the past 100 years. When she gets back around 10 ish she wakes Link up so they can had breakfast.
Who cooks?
-That’s the chef himself, Link. He loves cooking food almost as much as he loves eating it. He is teaching Zelda, who is fully aware that she lacks cooking skills because she never needed it. She’s getting better at it, sometimes she doesn’t burn the eggs. No matter what, the food they serve each other is also coupled with a kiss on the cheek.
Who says ‘I love you’ first?
-Lover Boy Link at your service. We know Zelda loves Link and he knows it too (not that she really knows a bird outed her feelings). But Link says it to her when she’s talking about possible solutions for the Divine Beast Vah Ruta. After spending the last few months going around Hyrule, meeting new people, remembering his past life, and going through the trials set in front of him all he could think about was saving her. Link knew he should be doing it to save Hyrule and that was part of his motivation, but the main drive for him was to get Zelda back. He refell in love with her during his journies, so when she was being the geek she is, it slipped.
How does the other react?
-Zelda sorta just stops and stares at him, because she’s known she’s loved him since she shielded him from the Guardian. But to hear that he loves her? She wants to cry on the spot because she’s so happy. Zelda gets all flustered and Link just sorta repeats it because even he’s surprised he said it and she just throws herself on him. Kisses and giggle ensue, because these two teenagers that have seen more than enough tragedy for their lifetime are in love with each other and together.
How do other characters react to the couple?
-The entirety of Hateno thought they were already engaged when they became official. Whoops.
-Impa has this knowing grin when the two of them go visit her for the first time since the confession. She knew that Zelda was in love Link 100 years ago, she’s just surprised it took him this long to figure it out for himself.
-They don’t tell Kass or anything when they go to Rito Village, but he tells Link in private that he doesn’t need a song to see how in love they are with each other. Link gets embarrassed but smiles and thanks him. Teba also makes a “is that your girlfriend?” Comment bc he doesn’t know what the princess from 100 years ago looks like. When Link says yes, he’s a bit surprised but proud anyway.
-Riju, my favorite companion, is estactic. She’s read Urbosa’s Diary and knows for a fact that there was something between Link and Zelda even if they didn’t know it. She’s also a tad off put bc she has this school girl crush on Link but she brushes it off because she’s never seen Link so carefree and happy as he is with Zelda around.
-Sidon, my lovely Zora, is a little surprised to say the least. He never really considered that Link had feelings for Zelda, just sort of focused on the fact that Mipha loved him enough to want Link to be her husband. But he’s happy for them anyway, and says to Link that Mipha would be happy he found someone he loves.
-Yunobo just sorta goes “oh, they’re together? That’s great!” And goes on with his life. Meanwhile, Daruk’s spirit is facepalming bc he saw all the signs and didn’t put two and two together. He really thought that one conversation was about food. Typical Hylians.
-If I’m gunna mention Daruk’s spirit I have to mention all of them.
-Urbosa is highfiving Zelda’s Mom because she got her wish for Zelda. She’s been on this team since Link first requested to meet with her. Those two were bound to be together, especially after all they’ve been through.
-Revali could care less, honestly. But he’s forced to listen to all the spirits talk about them and forces out a “Well I guess the two of them deserve each other” which was meant to be an insult but no one took it that way. He can never win, guys.
-Mipha is actually really happy. She’s had this feeling that Link was never really ever going to be truly hers. She saw how he saw past her, always looking for something else and how when he looked at Zelda, that’s all he saw. It’s why she never gave him the armor. So when she sees Link accept his feelings and let someone in, she’s beyond happy because Link deserves it. Zelda, too.
-Rhoam is just sorta going “well no one else is fit to be the king of Hyrule, so I guess Link is okay” when the Queen and Urbosa roll their eyes. He knows how much Zelda liked Link because she would have him hang out with her in the castle all the time.
Who proposes?
-Zelda is the first one to mention marriage. Since they’re in the process of rebuilding the castle and Hyrule Town, she will be the Queen once it’s completed. She’s already got royal stuff planned and all these projects started, but she brings up the point that if they get married, the ceremony would have to this whole thing since Hyrule has been without a royal family for a century. She’s sitting at the desk staring at pieces of parchment, when Link comes up behind her and places a hand on her back. Link then causally holds out a ring and tells her that they could get married tomorrow just for them.
Wedding?
- They go to Kapson in Terry Town the next day, with Purah, Impa, and Paya as their audience. They have this small ceremony with a dress Impa had saved from when the late Queen got married. Link had to go to Bolson of all people to get a tux of sorts, which ends up being a fancier version of the Royal Guards outfit bc Bolson is extra, even more so when he’s getting an outfit for the new King of Hyrule. He also joins the audience, but much more of a background character who throws flower petals at them.
-The ceremony for the kingdom doesn’t happen for another three years. They’re 23 by this time, the kingdom almost fully restored. With the castle finally back in order and Hyrule Town buzzing with merchants and residents, they decide to announce the news that they’re engaged. Yes, they’ve been married for three years at this point, but this is for the public more than them. Only close friends from the different races know, as well as most of Hateno Village (But they thought they were married a month after Zelda arrived). It’s this whole shebang with a new dress and classy tux. Impa walks Zelda down the aisle, telling her how happy her parents would be if they were here.
Do either of them want kids? One more than the other?
-Link is a SUCKER for kids. He loves them. He would have 50 kids of his own if he could. He doesn’t have many memories of his actual family, so it’s sort of a coping thing for him. Zelda wants children, but is more concerned that being in a different realm for 100 years would affect her ability to become pregnant. She’s also terrified that she’ll have a girl and have to name her Zelda per the family tradition (she doesn’t want any of her children to bear the responsibilities she did).
Do they have kids?
-Yes, they have two little girls. Neither are named Zelda. Instead they name them after story characters their parents used to read to them. (Tetra and Lana for me, but ya’ll can pick what you want)

drinking on a beach with (you all over me)
this is my second [published] botw zelink fic. post-calamity; based on the taylor swift lyric. thanks to @amxthystfan for beta reading even tho she knows nothing about zelda. read on ao3 here or under the cut. hope you enjoy! :)
It was only a week after she had sealed Ganon away, and Zelda was quick to return to her diplomatic duties.
She had immediately reunited with Impa, her dear friend that had always remained by her side ever since her mother passed away, and formulated a plan to visit each of the races and reunite them under one nation in order to finally begin the process of restoring Hyrule. She noticed that the light on Vah Ruta on the Sheikah Slate had gone dark––a perfect reason to visit Zora’s Domain and begin her task.
It was over a year after Link had awoken––over a year it had taken to rescue his princess and drive the beast away from Hyrule Castle once and for all. His memories were slowly returning to him at closer intervals now, perhaps due to Zelda’s new presence, and he was beginning to understand his past self.
He always had this goal to work towards––freeing Zelda from the Castle––but now that it was accomplished, an invisible weight was lifted off his shoulders, and he wanted nothing more than to crawl into his Hateno bed and fall asleep for the next millennium, despite being asleep for an entire century.
However, he would never leave his princess, and wherever she suggested they go next, he followed––not because of his duty bestowed upon him centuries ago, but because of her.
He made sure to remind her everytime he found her doubting herself.
It has been a week since they were reunited, a week full of Zelda reconnecting with the land, of her meeting old and new friends, of her planning an entire journey. It will be like old times, Link! she had exuberantly exclaimed while showing him the map on the Sheikah Slate, their path already laid out. He smiled––if his princess was happy, then so was he.
But alas, Link was tired, and he knew from the way Zelda had dark lines under her eyes and slouched her shoulders when she thought no one was looking, so was she. It made sense, after all––she was sleeping a lot lately, but long hours of sleep could not erase away the fact that she was trapped in a battle with Ganon for the past century.
And so, the day before they were scheduled to depart to Zora’s Domain, Link had approached Zelda with the Sheikah Slate and pointed towards a location.
Her eyebrows furrowed. “Lurelin Village?” she asked, taking the Slate, and he nodded. “Why there?”
“They are having a festival in two days to celebrate the end of the darkness,” he signed. “We can get away.”
“As in, a break?”
He nodded.
He watched her consider, a thousand thoughts roaming in her mind, trying to plan. She was chewing on her bottom lip, and Link almost wanted to lean in so she would just relax.
“I suppose it would be beneficial. I am quite exhausted, and attending this celebration will allow me to get a glimpse of how Hyrule’s citizens have functioned in the hundred years without a central government. It would be…nice, I think, to indulge in their customs before setting foot in the political madness.”
Link was nodding vigorously, a smile beaming on his face. When Zelda met his eyes, she was nearly taken back––she hadn’t realized Link was truly wanting this short break. She immediately felt a wave of guilt for not considering the fact that he must have been worn out this entire time. He needed to rest, especially after defeating the dark beast––she reprimanded herself for not allowing him to do so.
He noticed the look on her face, and his smile vanished, his hands flying, “It’s okay––it’s not your fault. I understand your dedication to the restoration project, but you need to relax. You never had the opportunity to, not even before.”
Before. When her father insisted she maintain her daily devotions and visit every spring, every holy relic in this land in order to awaken her powers. She had worked tirelessly ever since the age of seven training––an entire decade without a break. Link was right, she realized. They both needed this.
She didn’t say anything as Link traced the path from Kakariko to Lurelin, instead offering him a grateful smile. Goddesses, how lucky she was to have this man in her life.
They had planned on arriving in Lurelin in the afternoon so that Zelda would have enough time to be introduced to each of the villagers before celebrations began that night. Leaving their horses at Lakeside Stable, they walked the rest of the distance, enjoying the breathtaking views of the trees brimming with life. Zelda admitted it was quite humid and sweat was beginning to build on her neck, but as the entrance to the village came into view, and with Link’s close presence next to her, she knew she did not regret their decision.
Almost immediately as they walked in did two little kids jump out from behind the palm trees, racing towards Link and nearly tackling him to the ground. However, he was not the Hero of Hyrule, fearless Knight of them all, for no reason, and he managed to stand his ground as the kids began to bombard him with questions.
“Link!” the one in the blue shirt exclaimed. “It’s been forever since you were here! Did you find the ruins? What were they like!?”
“No, Zuta!” The other kid said, pushing him aside. “Let Link tell us of you going to the Castle like a strong knight! That was you, right?” Link gave a hesitant nod, and the kid shrieked in joy. “I knew it! I knew it! What was it like? Did you rescue a pretty princess?”
Link sheepishly scratched the back of his head, unsure how to respond. They had agreed to keep Zelda’s true identity secret for now; she wanted to immerse with her people, not watch from afar.
“Kinov! Zuta! Leave Link alone and return to your mother! I hear she needs help preparing seafood paella!”
Zuta gasped, and his attention was immediately whisked away. Grabbing Zuta’s hand, they dashed back to the house where their mother was sat by the cooking pot, both of them waving at Link as they left. Link and Zelda turned around to see the man who sent the kids away approaching them. He was holding a fishing spear, and he extended a hand out to Link, clasping it on his shoulder.
“Link! It’s good to see you, buddy. Here for the celebration, I assume?”
“Hey, Numar,” Link signed. “Yes, we are”––he gestured at Zelda––“In fact, this is her first time visiting.”
“Is it, now?” Numar smiled. “My name is Numar. I keep watch over the village, and I’m also the Chief’s son.”
“Oh!” Zelda exclaimed. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, Numar! My name is Tetra.”
“It is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance, Tetra. Now, if you two would excuse me, I must help finish the preparations for the celebration. Do feel free to converse with the other villagers, however. You will see that everyone here just about knows Link!” He laughed.
Zelda laughed as well. “Link has made himself quite a popular person around Hyrule. It is no surprise he has done the same here.”
She could see Link’s face flush a little at the comment, and she stifled another laugh as Numar walked away. Link grabbed her hand, leading her inside the quaint village.
They spent the next few hours or so talking to each of the villagers; Kiana, Zuta and Kinov’s mother, told the story of how Link had helped her prepare seafood paella for dinner, and ever since that day, it was all her children craved. She and Zelda shared a laugh when Kiana noted how rapidly Link devoured his meal––as if he hadn’t had one in days!––and Zelda fondly remembered the day she discovered Link was a glutton. It turned out all she needed to do to get him to open up to her was to feed him!
Next, they encountered the fisherman Sebasto––also Kiana’s husband, Zelda noted––who thanked Link earnestly for opening up the fishing spot on Aris Beach once more, then began to tell Zelda all about how Link had heroically taken out all of the monsters that were plaguing the area. Zelda listened intently, pride swelling in her chest––Link could never resist extending a helping hand when needed, whether it be cooking dinner or defeating monsters. He was truly the Hero of Hyrule, on both grandiose and minuscule levels.
The rest of the faces were a blur as the celebration was drawing near––Zelda remembered Link introducing her to Armes who was busy preparing the fish, Mubs who was the shopkeeper but was currently assisting Numar with decorations, Cloyne whom Link didn’t linger too long on––he’s a bit shady––and lastly Charissa who showed them to their rooms in the inn.
There was only one left for it seemed as if Link and Zelda were not the only outsiders to attend the grand celebration at Lurelin, but no one seemed to mind that they were sharing a room. Link decided to continue wearing his Champion’s Tunic, but Zelda changed into a light, flowing dress that Kiana had given her. There was a beautiful, intricate design of the horizon meeting the sea, a clashing of various shades of blues and golds. She could not help but be entranced by the dress.
When the bells rang indicating the beginning of the festival, Link took her hand and led her to the center of the village, where every villager––and some more––was gathering around a large, dancing fire. They all sat, Zelda and Link next to Kiana and her family, and Zelda gazed around to see Numar and Armes with instruments, filling the air with livened music. Charissa and Mubs handed out drinks and plates, and Zelda recognized a few individuals whom she hadn’t met on her trek with Link––a Gerudo, whom later she would learn was named Flavi, and a traveler named Letty. When everyone was settled, the music came to a slow stop, and an elderly man stood.
“Greetings, friends and visitors! As you may know, my name is Rozel,” his eyes met each person, carrying a demeanor about him that made it seem he was talking to you individually, “And I am the Lurelin Village Chief.” Zelda smiled––so this will be the person she will be meeting with once she begins the restoration process. She was glad; he carried himself with kindness and ease.
“I thank you for coming together to prepare our village for this momentous night. As you may know, the evil blight that plagued our land is no more. Monsters no longer roam our beaches and roads, and our people are free to traverse once again.” There were whoops from the crowd, and Zelda was ecstatic with them. The amount of trade and travel decreased significantly in the prior century, not only due to monsters but to the fact that the population of Hyrule decreased significantly as well. People tend to stay within the walls of their village––only a few dared to leave and travel to other towns. Link had told her that even though he explored all of Hyrule numerous times, he only encountered a handful of merchants and travelers repeatedly, some of them being members of the Yiga Clan in disguise. It was one of the top priorities on Zelda’s list: to open the trading routes and free the roads from all harm.
“Tonight, we celebrate the end of the Age of Calamity, and we feast for the dawn of a new, prosperous age.”
He hadn’t mentioned who brought upon this end, but all eyes turned to Link anyways, and she felt him move back a bit as if hiding behind her.
She squeezed his hand, and in order to divert the attention, lifted her drink and cheered, “To the end of the Calamity!”
Everyone’s eyes were on her now, and to her relief, they all smiled and repeated her motion, chanting, “To the end of the Calamity!”
Link loosened next to her, and with a grin on his face he joined in, and the moment passed. Everyone began to share stories of their experiences of the darkness, encouraging Link to pipe in whenever he could, and Zelda sat and listened, watching Link’s face as his hands moved and his expressions reflected his words, and Zelda reiterated for those who did not understand sign. She felt a swell in her chest when Link gazed at her while she was talking, one which she pushed down lest a blush crept on her face.
Suddenly, Kinov piped up, pointing a finger at Link. “Link! Tell the story of how you killed the evil monster!”
All eyes were back on Link again, and Zelda couldn’t do anything in fear she might be discovered. Link stilled, looking at Kinov, then to everyone’s amazement––including Zelda’s––he whispered, “Okay.”
So he began to iterate how he defeated the Guardians storming Hyrule Castle, swam up the waterfalls and explored the different rooms that were now collapsed––Zelda blinked away tears before Link could notice––found rare treasures and weapons, and killed all of the monsters before heading to the Sanctum, where a ginormous egg was stuck to the ceiling and suddenly burst, revealing the hideous, terrible blight that was the cause for the devastation of Hyrule. Zelda stared at her drink, watching the liquid gently swish, her grip tightening. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy Link’s stories––they kept her entertained for hours when they were traveling together in the past––it was the fact that she had spent this past week doing whatever she could to banish all memories of Ganon from her mind, and Link’s telling was bringing forth the utter darkness she felt while trapped within the beast’s consciousness. When Link began to tell of the Divine Beasts assisting him, she felt at lost for air, her heart aching for her fallen friends, and excusing herself, she walked away from the fire and the people surrounding it––none paid much attention to her departure, all too focused on Link’s story––and decided to take a walk around the shore, gazing up at the constellations and stars and willing her body to relax and take deep breaths.
She knew she couldn’t run away from Ganon anymore. She had fought him relentlessly for the past century, and yet, she still awoke at night screaming at the nightmares he infiltrated. She was burying herself in the restoration project, and she had hoped this little vacation would do her good, but it was reminding her more and more of how the people of Hyrule had suffered, and how they were slowly recovering, and how she had so much more left to do to make the nation safe once again.
She took another deep breath, willing the thoughts away from her mind, and felt a presence next to her, familiar footsteps echoing on the sand, and without even looking she knew Link had immediately ran after her.
“This is nothing like the wine they served during those grandiose balls at the Castle,” Zelda reminisced, a slight frown on her face as she gripped the glass in her hand. He knew she wasn’t focusing on her words, trying to fill the silence as her thoughts battled elsewhere. “Even though I’m sure it was rich in value, this one just tastes better. More…” She trailed off once they reached a scatter of trees, turning to face the water; however, Link took her hand, turning her around so she faced him instead. She was staring at the glass on her hand now, anywhere except his face.
She felt the texture of rough hands on her chin, marveling at how gentle he was as he lifted her head. Her breath caught on her throat––cerulean eyes reflecting her own, a mixture of concern and worry and something else dashing across them.
“Zel, I’m sorry––I didn’t mean to––”
“It’s okay,” she said, her heart wildly beating at him calling her Zel. “I’ve been trying to forget, but perhaps––perhaps I should recognize what happened and move on.”
Link nodded, pressing his forehead against hers, taking slow and steady breaths so she could relax. “You are not alone,” he said, looking her squarely in the eye. “I will be here, every step of the way, and so will the people of Hyrule. We will get through this, together.”
She nodded, and at that moment, a sudden feeling in her chest seized her as he slowly grew closer, and she wanted nothing more than to lean in and capture his lips with hers, to let that feeling she constantly pushed away explode––but as soon as she began to close her eyes, he pulled away. Zelda blinked, wondering if she had done something wrong, or if she simply imagined he was about to kiss her. She was feeling a little tipsy, but she was usually more tolerant than this. Usually.
But then he set down her glass of wine by the base of a tree, and when he turned around, there was fire in his eyes.
One moment she was standing still, and the next, his hands were cupping her face, traveling down, down, until they rested on her hips, squeezing her gently in comparison to the way his lips were pressed against hers, as if she were a feast he could not resist devouring.
“Zelda,” he whispered breathlessly as he pulled away, and she broke.
Her fingers tangled in his hair, her other hand drifting behind his neck, pulling him closer, her head tilting up a little bit––when did he get taller?––to recapture his lips feverishly, allowing herself to get lost in this moment, to forget all of her duties and only focus on the chorus in her mind that screamed Link, Link, Link.
He picked her up suddenly, and Zelda let out a little yelp of surprise as his arms snaked under her knees and back, setting her against one of the palm trees. He climbed over her, and Zelda wondered how long, exactly, he had waited for this moment.
He planted kisses on her neck, careful not to leave behind any marks, and she squirmed as his hands came to rest at the hem of her skirt, his eyes meeting hers as she waited expectantly.
Instead, he kissed her chastely, and she whimpered at his loss when he rolled next to her. She turned to face him, her mouth opening to ask Why did you stop? but he seemed to anticipate this, as he propped himself up and began to move his hands.
“This isn’t the best location,” he signed, then paused. “Not that far away from the village, either.”
Of course. Zelda blushed. She had forgotten it was nearly midnight, and the celebration was still alive and well, with the lights twinkling and the people jumping into the water not that far away. They couldn’t see her and Link because of the darkness, but––Zelda’s blush deepened––they would certainly hear her.
Link laughed at her flustered face as she sat up, and he handed her wine back, allowing her to take a sip from the glass, but not before he whispered in her ear, “Next time.”
She whipped her head around, and he was laughing once more, hands pulling her close, lips tracing patterns in her skin.
She raised the glass to her lips, relishing in the way the cool liquid burned down her throat, as her eyes fluttered closed and her skin was ignited by the feel of him.
It was going to be a long night. Not that she minded.

I am not sure if I like ‘more recent’ incarnations of Princess Zelda as much as the ones that came out a few console gens ago-- not for nostalgia reasons, but there feels to be this weird... returning to ‘form’ of the truly retro games that had almost no space for any kind of story, wherein Princess Zelda was more of a symbol than she was an actor that participated in the adventure. Zelda has always Gone To Sleep or Been Locked Away in her own franchise, but we’ve had Ocarina of Time Zelda, who disguised her identity for years and became a warrior to evade Ganondorf... we’ve had Tetra, who was living her own life on the high seas as a pirate before a king told her she was a Princess and had to stay in a locked basement... even Twilight Princess Zelda is seen facing down her antagonist prepared to use a sword before she conceded that surrender might be in her people’s best interests.
Then with Phantom Hourglass, Tetra was turned into a statue and removed from the action. In Spirit Tracks we had co-op with Zelda... but she had to not be in her own body, and also mice made her comically terrified. In recent games Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild, Zelda has been equated with this goddess-like status that serves as a sacred idol, a symbol like her earliest incarnations. Not like, 100% passive, especially because technology, memory, and changing standards suggest that she should have maybe some more dialogue, demands, and character. But I miss princesses that did things other than travel around between holy sites and awaken their sacred powers. I especially miss implications that Hyrule is a kingdom, with a ruler who has practical responsibilities rather than just spiritual ones. Both Skyward Sword and BOTW featured a Hyrule in ruins of its former self, that was not a nation. And thus Zelda is not a princess and enfranchised by any kind of state that matters, but instead her significance must be some kind of divinity that exists without anything manmade at all.
I don’t think all female characters have to be warriors or action girls to have significance, I would certainly accept a scholar or a politician Zelda... but I do think Zelda’s recent evolution reduces her agency, is more in line with gender roles, and emphasizes one of her least pleasing roles to me: the divine idol, dehumanized because her holiness is much more important than her will to act as an individual within her world.
#legend of zelda#zelda#princess zelda#there are definitely people who will disagree with me on this#this is just my take#I always want female characters to push boundaries in our real world#after having a male persona or being a pirate or being seen actually holding a sword#zelda has gone back to a very conservative place#and her media was deeply conservative to begin with

Aasimar AU (Legend of Zelda)
Due to their contact with the Triforce (or other celestial forces), Zelda, Link and Ganondorf take the forms of aasimar--the only true aasimar in Hyrule. Sages and other devotees of the goddesses may pursue a life as clerics or paladins, but only Zelda, Link and Ganondorf are truly transformed by their contact with the goddesses. Sometimes Link and Zelda reflect Hylia's influence more than Farore's and Nayru's; sometimes it's the other way round. Their appearances vary between incarnations; for example, Skyward Sword Link has skin that appears metallic and eyes that occasionally glow with an ethereal light, while that incarnation of Zelda merely appeared luminous and may have had feathers in her hair prior to her awakening as the goddess. However, all incarnations of the hero and goddess have a presence that commands attention wherever they go, demanding the full attentiveness of those who hear them.
For the most part, Zelda has the abilities of a protector aasimar while Link has the traits of a scourge aasimar. For many of them, the ability to heal with a touch was the first sign of awakening abilities--Breath of the Wild Link erased Zelda's hypothermia at the Spring of Power with a touch.
Long post; more under cut.
While each of the Links has varying aasimar traits to begin with, at a turning point in each of their narratives they gain wings, which are more of a hindrance at first. For instance, Ocarina of Time Link got his wings after finding the Master Sword, while Twilight Princess Link either had his after being transformed back from a wolf for the first time or gained them after saving Colin. Breath of the Wild Zelda gained her wings when she went to face the Calamity alone, but Link may have gotten his after sacrificing himself to protect her or defeating the first Divine Beast. The wings' appearance tends to coincide with when a true commitment to duty is made. While over time they become stronger and more useable, it's often not until after the adventure is over that Link and Zelda become capable of powered flight.
Their aasimar traits often affect how Link and Zelda are treated as children (and would affect Ganondorf in a true reincarnation, such as in one of the Four Sword games, but don't appear until he's seized the Triforce of Power in Ocarina of Time.) While Breath of the Wild Link was viewed as a divine blessing and a good omen against the return of the Calamity, Twilight Princess Link's parents actually fled Hyrule for Ordon (unfortunately dying during the journey, though Link arrived safely in Ordon) because his birth would've been seen as a portent of doom. While Link's life in Ordon was less abnormal than it would have been in Hyrule, he still was seen as strange and unearthly if an overall benign presence, though the children of Ordon adored him. Unlike Skyward Sword Link, most of Twilight Princess Link's aasimar traits were more effects on his environment--plants and people becoming healthier and crops growing more quickly--rather than specific strange traits of appearance. Due to their alignment with Farore, creator of life and living things, most Links have similar effects though not always as pronounced.
As for their wings, I've gone mostly by Linked Universe's interpretations of the character to determine what their wings would be like.
Sky's wings are brown and white, but with red covert feathers similar to his loftwing's. His wings are best suited for long flights and soaring on updrafts. He gained his wings after making the leap of faith to the surface, but still needed the sailcloth for some time after to land safely even though later in his adventure he learned how to glide on his own wings. Post-adventure, he loves to fly side-by-side with his loftwing, Zelda and her loftwing.
Four has hummingbird wings with bird-of-paradise tail feathers. He's the most maneuverable in flight and flies best when in Minish form. He gained the wings relatively late in his adventure, during the rush to save Zelda from Vaati.
Time has wings similar to a hawk or eagle suited to a relatively open habitat, such as plains. Like Sky, he's best at soaring and sustained flight, but struggles to take off from the ground. He has the largest wings, in part due to being the tallest and heaviest. His wings are banded brown, white and tan.
Legend has raven wings, somewhat more iridescent than the average corvid but not quite as much as a grackle. He often prefers walking to flying. I don't know enough about his games to know when he first gained his wings.
Hyrule has barn owl wings--the silent flight helps him to evade monsters. I'm leaning toward him gaining wings after his first use of the transformation spell.
Twilight has the third-largest wingspan after Time and Sky. His wings are broader and shorter, meant for maneuverability and speed in wooded areas, but he's not bad at soaring and prolonged flight though it is exhausting. He's also the strongest in flight--the only one who can carry a teammate other than Four or Wind while flying. His wings are mostly gray--darker gray coverts with softer gray flight feathers, and red-orange highlights just below the coverts on the underside of his wings. Ooccoo tried to teach him to fly, but didn't have much success due to Hylian lacking the technical terms she tried to use.
Wind has albatross wings with a blue-to-white gradient. He gained his wings on leaving Outset Island but took longer to learn even to glide than most of the others. Medli helped him and Tetra learn to fly after he'd defeated Ganondorf and brought them both to gain their scales from Valoo, making them honorary Rito.
Warriors has similar wings to Twilight but his are slightly smaller and he can't carry anyone larger than Wind in flight. He has the brightest coloration of all of them except for Four, which Legend refers to as "warning coloration." He isn't wrong. Cia once tried to hold one of his discarded feathers in her teeth and immediately regretted it. Warriors gained his wings the first time he jumped on a metaphorical grenade for someone else. (I haven't played his game either and don't know much about it.)
Wild either gained his wings after dying to protect Zelda or on defeating his first Divine Beast. Either way, he wouldn't learn to glide without the paraglider until he was on the way to Hateno to see Purah. He has wings like a peregrine falcon as well as the ability to stoop, which Revali would absolutely hate if he'd lived long enough to be on the receiving end. After spending too long airborne, Wild gets fatigued more easily.

For the fandom thing: Legend of Zelda?
Character I first fell in love with:
My first game was Ocarina of Time then Twilight Princess. Out of the two, the first character I really fell in love with was Midna. From her design to her sassy attitude on top of how I got to watch her develop, she really stole my heart and I adore her.
Character I never expected to love as much as I do now:
I never expected to love Groose as much as I do now. I loved watching him develop as a person and gain some humility after realizing that there are bigger things in the world than him. Plus he’s just funny now. XD
Character everyone loves but I don’t:
Princess Ruto. I genuinely just.. Never really liked her. She has the biggest obsession over Link, and when you play as Link it just. It feels awkward. Like, Ruto, honey… I know you want it, but you aren’t getting anything out of this green package. XD
Character I love but everyone else hates:
Fi gets a lot more shit than she deserves in my opinion. People complain about her being annoying with all the facts and numbers she works out, but that’s how she’s programmed. She was designed to be robotic. Her mission is to assist Link with all the information that she could possibly provide about the world. She doesn’t know any other way. It’s just how she was created. She’s beautiful and I respect her. I may not like listening to her all the time but at least she offers you options to listen to her rambling or not sometimes.
Character I used to love but don’t any longer:
Oh boy, here we go. This character would be Tetra. I adored her in Wind Waker, save for when she became Zelda at first and then her voice suddenly changed because putting on a dress somehow gives you a squeaky voice??? But the reason I do not care for her anymore is none other than the effing trainwreck that is Phantom Hourglass. Phantom Hourglass is a broken game. The boat mechanics are broken, broken mic mechanics, redoing the same god damn dungeon HOW MANY TIMES??, broken fuckin MIC MECHANICS, anti-climatic final boss, and Tetra being a damsel in distress literally the whole game. And when she’s finally freed from being stone, SHE PASSES OUT AT EVERY. SINGLE. TURN. Oh I just got picked up by a monster? WOOP THERE I GO, SWEET DREAMS. I just. I can’t. I love the Zelda series but that game is like the Sonic 06 of Zelda to me. I cannot stand it and kinda wished it just was not part of the series. It just makes me really sad for Tetra because of how poorly she’s treated.
Character I would kiss:
You all know this answer and I can’t deny the answer. Sweetest, most innocent character I’ve ever seen in this entire series.
Character I want to slap:
Cawlin. Jesus this guy needs to stop being such a dick. He shows no worry for Zelda and Groose. Groose goes fuckin MISSING to the people of skyloft after following me and Cawlin’s just like “HA I CAN STEAL HIS ROOM”. I understand Groose is a jerk in the beginning, but still. At least ask if he’s alive. He deserve being haunted by the bathroom ghost as well as seeing Kareen and Pipit confess their love for each other.
A pairing I love:
Have I mentioned my deep love for Majora’s Mask? I love all the characters in this game, Skull Kid especially. However, it’s also home to my favorite canon couple in the whole series. Anju and Kafei. Their mask quest line is difficult as HELL but I think it’s worth it. It’s amazing the lengths Kafei has been going to keep his promise to Anju despite what Skull Kid did to him. The whole game just makes me feel like I’ve become apart of each character’s life as well as truly having saved them all. It just has a special place in my heart.
A pairing I hate:
This is a little bit of a more grey area, but I really do not care any Zelda/Ganondorf (including Hylia/Demise), Link/Ganondorf, or even Link/Zelda ships. There is only ONE game where I ship Link and Zelda, and that’s Skyward Sword. Otherwise, I just don’t care for the ships with the three. I don’t know why, I just don’t. Never been a fan.

top five best girls in zelda
#5 - anju (majora’s mask)
look i know the kafei thing is weird, i do, because it is, but like: i do highkey appreciate her willingness to tough out any unbearable situation with grace. the world is literally ending and falling down around her, her fiance ghosted, her grandmother’s probably gonna kick it soon, her family doesn’t have anywhere to stay for the apocalypse, her inn is packed because it’s festival season, and anju still shows up to work and doesn’t cry in front of anyone except the frogs at the pond. her faith in the goodness of things and the goodness in PEOPLE when she is surrounded by mostly bad people and terrible things is like truly amazing
#4 - impa (skyward sword)
i love this charming old lady, who so easily kicked groose’s ass into being a better person, i love the plot twist and that i didn’t see it coming until just a split second before they told us, i love that she’s literally like a thousand years old and hasn’t lost her humor or wit. i also love that the young version gave link absolutely no quarter when it came to protecting zelda like she was fucking savage when he showed up to class late good job impa
#3 - tetra (wind waker)
ONE OF THE BEST ZELDAS TBH. like it’s sad that she couldn’t be ZELDA while kicking the enemy’s ass and saving link’s, like that she had to be tetra the entire time and then become helpless once she entered Girly Secret Identity Mode, but like aside from that discourse: a-maz-ing. sarcastic and fierce and brave and wonderful. i love her so much. has any zelda done as much saving of link as tetra? i don’t think so.
#2 - zelda (breath of the wild)
i love that this zelda gets to feel so many feelings and have so many layers. she gets to be a HUGE SUPER NERD who likes to learn about history and likes figuring out how things work, she gets to grieve for her mother, and then later for her entire kindom + her cahmpion family & her father, she gets to feel frustrated and broken because she can’t unlock her power (HEY LOOK LISTEN GUESS WHO’S ASEXUAL), she gets to be angry with how her father treats her, she gets to be CANONICALLY!!! in love with link - like we see her interact with so many people, and she’s one of the most filled-out characters in the entire series. that kind of depth is what i have been craving from zelda for nineteen YEARS, i can’t possibly say how happy i am to finally get it.
#1 - midna (twilight princess)
my forever girl!! midna’s like easily the most memorable partner you get (maybe aside from navi lol) - her sarcasm and wit and tsundere levels are all off the charts. also, her true form is kind of a babe?? she’s also a veritable badass (definitely the most badass partner) what with the giant eldritch form that eats castles. also, some of this is fanon - a long time ago i read this zelda/midna retelling of twilight princess, and it made me bawl like a baby, and it’s definitely my favorite interpretation of her and you, Yes You, Reading This, should read it too even if you don’t know anything about zelda, because it’s wonderful and so is she.
