Still thinking about the silt verses finale and all I can really think about is how sometimes older siblings are the only god you ever really know, and the parallel between Anathema “I have always dwelt in the shadow of my god” Carpenter and Richard “Perhaps to become who I truly need to be, he requires me first to be rid of the shadow that trails after me” Faulkner.
Calling Carpenter his shadow like calling her his god. Calling her his god before finally turning away from the trawler man, calling out for her, his god, only to once again be met with silence.

"Let the tides carry you back to me." has always been among one of my favourite lines in Telomeres, and so, having listened to it again recently, a little idea popped into my head. Let me explain:
While ocean tides/currents is a very common metaphor, there's an underlying meaning to it. The ocean is a beautiful, but somewhat cruel place: tides can leave you stranded on a sandbank, or sweap you away before you even know it.
To put it in short, no object or creature that goes into the ocean comes out the same. For the tides to carry something back to you, something you've lost, it will be and always will be changed: eroded.
The cliffside will fall, the cave will crumble, etc etc.
With this in mind, we're yet again greeted with another example of Vessel asking for something he can't truly have. The person he wants will not be the same as they were before; they "collapse" into him, breaking apart, but still, to him, it's "the start of something."
His memory is warped, they are warped, and it'll stay that way.
However, what I would like to add is that, in DYWTYLM, it's theorised that instead of Vessel speaking to a second person, he's instead talking to himself.
Of course, this makes the song itself much more emotional (to me). Finding love for yourself is one of the hardest things you can do, but it has to be done to find love in others.
With that idea (stay with me here), the lyrics "Do you roll with the waves? Or do you duck into deep blue safety?" match up (generally) with Telomeres, which is mostly interpretated as being towards someone else.
So, what if some lines in Telemores are directed to himself as well?
Keep in mind, the tides don't just erode and carry objects (sediment), they also reflect. The Atlantic is one big mirror, and Vessel is staring into it's "deep blue safety" wondering what, or, rather, who, he was before he was Vessel.
Overall, the album name, "This Place Will Become Your Tomb", either being directed at Vessel or Vessel to Sleep (and being a Halo quote lmao), is more metaphorical than literal.
Who he was before Vessel sits in that coffin, not his physical body.

Auraugust Day 21: Picture Perfect
[continued from Day 20: Dance]
"You really care about them a lot." It wasn't a question, and Hades knew the Third Promise was the same variety of infuriatingly intuitive as Hythlodaeus. When he didn't respond, she went on.
"Akira told me that there was a time that Hythlodaeus was in trouble, and you did some...extreme things to save him," she pressed. Hades' jaw clenched; here it comes, she had found out what he really was and he would have to leave or else cause more problems for-
"I think I understand," Wuk Lamat's next words took Hades by surprise. "If something were to happen to Papa or Koana or even Zoraal Ja, as much as he's tried to distance himself from us...I would do anything for them."
Hades fought the knee jerk reaction that demanded he snarl that she knew nothing of his suffering. It wasn't fair to her; Wuk Lamat was barely an adult, and she knew nothing of his true past. She was only trying to be kind.
He thought that if Persephone had gotten to meet her, they would have gotten along famously.
He had to push the thought down, lest he make more a fool of himself.
"I pray that you never find out what you'd be willing to do," Hades settled on.

The four Sages were called back into the past by Terrako and they remember it happening
Tulin got to meet his hero, Revali, and decided to be just like him, adopting his idol’s brash personality and drive. He practises Revali’s Gale and eventually comes up with his own way to show off his mastery of wind, and when trouble hits his home he rushes to fix it on his own to prove how strong he has become and because, like Revali, he can’t stand idly by while he knows there’s still things he can do.
For Yunobo, when he goes back and meets his ancestor Daruk, he is a very timid and reactive Goron. He needs a push from others to come up with ideas and carry plans through, and when bad things happen to him his first instinct is to use his fire magic as a shield, to wait until the threat has passed by or somebody else has come to save him. But when he is sent back in time to Divine Beast vah Rudania, for the first time he has to be the one doing the saving. Daruk encourages Yunobo and is proud of him from the moment they meet, and it’s this support that gives Yunobo the confidence to help fight against Calamity Ganon, and to start YunoboCo when he gets home.
For Sidon, meeting his family from 100 years ago is bittersweet. He is proud that he was able to protect his sister, and it’s a comfort to know there is a version of him who will grow up alongside Mipha because of his bravery and fighting prowess. But as much joy as he got from seeing her, hugging her, and hearing her voice again, it just reminds him of how unfair her death was, of just how young she was when she died and how he is now older even though he’s the younger sibling. And at the end of the war, when he’s returned to their original time, he has to readjust to her absence all over again, and in light of that is it really a shock he’d have her statue moved further away from his home? And it also explains why he’s so desperate to protect Yona from the sludge.
Riju in AoC still a new ruler to her people, despite her accomplishments in BotW, she still feels guilty over the temporary loss of the Thunder Helm and isn’t sure if she can lead the Gerudo. She has a lot of confidence but is quick to falter when things go wrong. Urbosa treats Riju as a capable fighter despite her young age, and teaches her that she should never give up, to keep trying even when her resolve falters. There is always something you can do, even when it’s just stalling for time until help can arrive. Urbosa guides her in mastering the Thunderhelm, and possibly begins teaching her to summon lightning herself after Kohga attempts to steal it, and at the end of their time together Urbosa tells Riju she’s certain she’ll lead the Gerudo well. Riju treasured her time being mentored by Urbosa so much that she considers what Urbosa would do during the Upheaval in her diary in TotK.
I think the entire reason Tulin was added to the DLC was because the TotK team had already decided that Tulin was going to be the Sage of Wind, and that since the other sages were going to meet their Champions Tulin had to as well.
At some point in the years between Botw and TotK Teba, Tulin, Sidon, Yunobo, Riju and Patricia were summoned back in time by Terrako to aid the Champions during the Calamity, and even though those events took place in a parallel timeline and had no bearing on the world they returned to, the Sages’ personalities at the beginning of TotK are because of their experiences during the Calamity and the bonds they made with the Champions.

“Do you want to try it?” You asked with a smile. “A day like this is a cause for celebration, don’t you think?”
He kept quiet as his gaze trailed to the thin stick within your hand. Though he never used one before, they weren’t unfamiliar to him. In times past, the more studious of the adepti found interest in those Inazuman delights. The lights would often draw his eyes from across a crowd, but he never bothered to investigate up close. While bright and beautiful, they died quickly as transient things often did.
“I’m alright. There’s no need to waste such human trivialities on me.”
As usual, his refusal didn’t color your expression with hurt. Instead, you shrugged and turned your attention back to the Mingxiao Lanterns floating in the sky.
“It wouldn’t be a waste to me. Not for you.”
He held back his urge to sigh. There you went again saying such things. Though you were assigned to his care, you didn’t need to visit him so often. You didn’t need to shower him with gifts. You didn’t need to stay by his side. He knew he wasn’t easy to be around. He knew he often made people feel nervous. But you didn’t mind. You weren’t scared away.
In the back of his mind, he wondered why Rex Lapis gave you to him. Xiao had been a loyal servant for years. Never once had he failed his duty. So he didn’t understand. What was he supposed to do with you? What was the purpose of keeping you by his side?
He broke away from his thoughts when a soft humming filled the air. Turning his attention to you, there you stood by the torchlight with that stick from earlier in hand. After lighting the tip, you held your arm out as the stick began to erupt in a burst of lights and stars. You laughed, waving it around, enjoying the streaks it made across the evening sky.
The sight was captivating.
But just as quickly as it began, it soon came to an end. With a sigh, you placed the sparkler to the side. Almost as if reading his mind, you turned to him with a bashful smile.
“They don’t last long, but they are beautiful, aren’t they? It may be a bit frivolous, but what’s the point in being alive if we don’t allow ourselves to enjoy it?”
Perhaps it was due to it being Lantern Rite that he suddenly found himself caught in a bout of honesty.
“I’m… not sure I understand.”
It was the most truthful answer he could give. And how shocking it was you did not judge him for it. Instead, you walked over to the box of sparklers and picked out a stick. With a smile, you then held it out to him.
“Why not try?”

Beauty and the Beast for the WIP game?
My only real attempt at writing poetry before this year happened during a stretch when I tried to write a Beauty and the Beast retelling in verse. I got about two-thirds of the way through before it fizzled out and languished forever unfinished.
When it comes to my recent novel-in-verse obsession, the simplest option would be to take another look at this work and try to finish it. There's a lot of terrible poetry in there, but there are some that are somewhat better than I remember. I can't claim to be a judge of what's good poetry, but some of these are readable, so I'll share some of them here.
The first set of semi-readable poems covers the first meetings between Beauty and the Beast. (These are all numbered, and I'm leaving the numbers in place to better differentiate between separate poems. I think the speaker in most of these is fairly clear from context, but just in case, I'll put the speaker's name in the title, too.)
VI. beauty and beast
he is every nightmare i’ve ever forgotten
he is thunder and darkness and death
he is fear with fangs
he is beastly
she is every dream i’ve never dared for
she is roses and sunlight and life
she is hope with jewels
she is beauty
*
VIII. beauty
the chair
creaks
when he sits
my knees
quake
when he speaks
the master
laughs
when i ask
when i will die
my ears
doubt
when i hear
my mind
reels
when i realize
the master
wonders
when i began
to think he’d kill me
IX. beast
the rules are these
you are mistress of this castle
the servants will obey your every whim
the rooms and all within are yours
including me
you will dine with me at dusk
we will not speak if you want silence
you will look at me and try not
to scream
i will not harm a hair of your head
i will not cause a moment’s worry
you will do whatever you wish
except leave
X. beauty
his mercy shatters my world
makes it bigger and
at the same time
smaller
how can i live in a monster’s cage
my life will be long and lonely
with him my friend and
at the same time
jailer
how can i look at a monster’s face
the castle teems with wonders
that all belong to him and
at the same time
me
what do i do with a monster’s love
*
The next set of poems I feel like sharing starts with Beauty finding a portrait in the castle, and then leads into her sharing a dance with Beast that makes her kind of freak out over the fact that she might be falling in love.
XXII. beast
today you found a painting
in a long-forgotten room
covered in cobwebs
and shrouded in dust
there was a reason it was lost
the portrait showed a man
with a face like the dawn
and eyes like the sea
you thought he looked kind
he was young and a fool
you may keep it if you wish
or lock it back in darkness
it matters not to me
i used to see him daily
i doubt i’ll see his face again
*
XXIV. beauty (and beast)
if rooms have souls
the ballroom is wise
a radiant beauty
long past her prime
she treasures the days
when she lived and was loved
she keeps them and counts them
like pearls on a string
(she is not the only one,
my dear)
long past midnight
in moonlight and hush
this sleepwalking girl
can glimpse former days
a flash of a gown
and a whisper of waltz
what glorious balls
must this room have beheld
(they were marvelous indeed,
my friend)
it seems a shame
she grows old alone
with nothing but darkness
and dust held within
i would dance for her
return the spark of life
if only we had music
and i had a partner
(i will gladly dance with you,
my love)
XXV. beast
my dear beauty
don’t you know
i learned dancing
long ago
one step closer
take my hand
with a waltz you’ll
understand
let the music
guide your feet
in a dance that’s
slow and sweet
hand in hand and
heart to heart
it’s not love but
it’s a start
XXVI. beauty
he is
hulking
beastly
i am
small
delicate
i should be
stumbling
crushed
but
we
marvelously
miraculously
dance
and it feels like flying
XXVII. beauty (to the portrait)
man on the wall
i may be mad
but i must
give voice
to the
storm
in my heart
and you are the only one near
the master puzzles me
i know his home as well as my own
but i know so little about him
(is he
beast
or
man
or
nightmare
or
dream
or
captor
or
friend)
i saw his face
and thought him a beast
(but he grows roses
and reads poems
and has never
killed
or even
raised his voice)
i heard his voice
and thought him a monster
(but he spared my life
gave me his home
and all he owned
offered
his
heart
and never once has been
anything but gentle)
i watched him dance
and thought him a man
(with grace like an angel
or a prince
and i think that
maybe
he was not always
so
lonely
and that his heart
aches
for things lost)
what am i to
think
do
say
be
feel
about him now
and why do these questions
always come at midnight
*
The final poem is one that I had completely forgotten about, so I was shocked to find it lurking in the latter sections of the document and showing signs of using some decent imagery. By polishing up the last couple of lines, I've got something that's not half bad as a standalone poem.
This one occurs during an extended period when Beauty is still trying to process her feelings toward Beast and figure out if this is really love or if her feelings are being warped by isolation and close proximity.
XXX. beauty
if this is love
it is a dark and grasping love
a child stumbling in the night
crying for a candle flame
and cherishing the smallest spark of light
if this is love
it is a bleak and desolate love
a skeleton tree in a barren desert
windbeaten and scrubbed to bone
and bursting into bloom at the first drop of rain
if this is love
it is a smoke and mirrors love
a sleight of hand or trick of light
that takes my broken heart
and fools me into thinking he can make it whole

It's 2024, and the ponytail is real.
It's been nearly two decades since the end of main canon, and nearly one since No Breaths from Hell. If Kubo won't give my boy a glow-up, so help me, I will.
