you just know how much of an impact lilia had on malleus when — the time he still doesn't know about lilia's contribution to his life — he would run away/secretly escape from the castle and visit lilia from time to time in his little cottage in the forest. he doesn't like it back home and prefers to stay in a very homely and small cottage where it's full of life. heck he probably still appreciates lilia's cooking since lilia cooks out of LOVE, not just to keep him alive. despite it being deadly

it's how much he looks up to lilia when it was also him that introduced ice cream to malleus, when he had his tantrums, when he didn't know how to control his magic, how they'd play fight all the time (even until now). he even was willing to assist lilia when it comes to looking after little silver. it was lilia that gave him the confidence and strength and he KNOWS that but it must've been so painful knowing the full truth.

damn it he even listens and cowers to lilia if lilia's mad/scolding him because NO ONE DOES back in his home so how would he learn?? malleus doesn't even like being acknowledged as a prince. that's why he's so admirable/attached towards the mc because they're clueless about his real nature and the mc sees mal for himself. which is what lilia does because heaven forbid lilia doesn't care about mal's title 🥹 he's putting that draconia ass to his place just like he does to his mom. and may i remind you, most of the royal duties were forced on mal leaving him no room to make mistakes and just be...a young fae (ie. during his birthday he needs to do royal stuff as 'acknowledgement' since his birthday is a national holiday in his country). meanwhile, lilia just lets him play and do whatever he wants until he needed to interfere.

if you see malleus and leona's bickering, lilia can actually sense that mal's enjoying it and he fully supports that ideal because again and again he knows malleus needs it as part of growing up. damn it i hate the royal household of briar valley. when leona commented that malleus is so lucky to have everything and be acknowledged, best believe that malleus doesn't even like it. while he's being acknowledged, he's not evolving as a fae. he's just forced into a space where he's not himself. and leona's being ignored by his own senate but gives him to freedom to be and do what he wants. lilia is giving him THAT kind of freedom. a father. the rightful father figure that he NEEDS.

do you see the juxtaposition? do you see how important lilia is now to malleus' life? because damn well the senate of briar valley's deadass eyes don't. like come on y'all dead just STAY DEAD FFS‼️‼️🗣️🗣️

so the 118 obviously has a boyfriend tax jar that's exclusively for buck. when buck starts dating tommy everyone's very happy for them so they're willing to put up with buck constantly bringing him up and talking about everything he gets up with his boyfriend thinking that it'll stop once they leave the honeymoon phase except that it's been nearly six months now and he won't stop talking about tommy and there's only so much one can hear about a coworker's sex life before starting to go a little bit mad, so, the jar is introduced

buck gets three free passes a day and after that every mention of tommy requires money in the jar ($1 every time he mentions his name, $2 if he calls him "my boyfriend" because that's somehow even more sappy, $5 if he mentions what they get up in bed, $10 if the words "dick" and "hole" get brought up (after one conversation where everyone learns way much more than they ever need to know about buck's sex life a new fine is installed: $20 if buck ever calls tommy "daddy" at the station))

so anyway, the jar system is working. it doesn't stop buck from talking about his boyfriend at all, if anything since the jar started he talks about him more, but at least the money collected funds the A-shift's once a month happy hour so we're calling it a success. except that one day out of nowhere eddie also starts bringing up tommy and just won't stop. one day he spends a good twenty minutes talking about tommy's hands and how massive they looked when they were working on some car's engine, another day is all about how big tommy is and how his muscles look while he works out, three days after that is about how nice tommy is with animals and kids and how he can bake the fluffiest cakes, did you know that? and whenever this is happening buck will only look at eddie and smile and doesn't say a word

so the 118 is very fucking confused because the tommy jar is exclusively for buck because they thought no one else would have a reason to not shut up about him but now here eddie is and they don't know if they're supposed to start making him put money on it too because like, it's the boyfriend jar after all. they also don't know what to make of it. is buck exploiting a loophole they didn't consider before through eddie? are those actually eddie's thoughts? does eddie have a crush on buck's boyfriend? does buck know? is he okay with it? do they need to rename the jar to simply "the tommy jar" and make everyone who brings him up put money in it?

(the confusion is cleared out a couple months later one day that buck and eddie get to work together one morning and before doing anything else eddie drops twenty dollars on the jar and loudly announces to everyone "so, turns out buck wasn't overselling how pretty tommy looks when you ride him. truly life altering experience". everyone considers just banning mentioning tommy at all during working hours)

What differentiates a God from a Youkai?

The Oogata twins went from Gods to Youkais, right? Yet, Sano is in a Youkai school but without being defined as one. Besides the reveal of his nature and a glimpse of his past, is there a reason for that?

i think, my interpretation of what yohaji is about, and also sort of the stance haruaki takes, is that there's not a huge difference between gods and youkai (and humans, for that matter).

gods can become youkai, humans can become youkai, humans and youkai can have children. all three have lives and experiences that the other two can relate to and empathise with, and all three can communicate with each other if they so desire.

the biggest thing driving the difference between the three is outside perspectives of the individual, and the individual's perspective of the others. gods' disdain and disregard for those they perceive as inferior to themselves, humans' dehumanizing reverence for certain types of "otherness" and fear of other types of "otherness", and youkai's rejection of and defensiveness against the "otherness" that have done them ill in the past

(for that matter, "the difference between gods and youkai is outside perspective" extends beyond the fourth wall too. to a western perspective, perhaps some of the gods that cause storms, disasters, droughts, pestilence, volcano eruptions and so on should be considered "monsters" too. and even just from a japanese perspective, raijin and fuujin are depicted as oni despite also being considered gods, and theres historical (human) figures that have shrines and are worshipped as gods, with aggrandized stories to match)

on the surface level, meiji arc does posit that there are differences between the three, by haruaki saying that he "didnt realise there was that big of a difference between humans and youkai" in regards to the lifespan thing, but you have to consider that kai was bringing that up deliberately in an attempt to hurt hatanaka, so that he could perhaps feel the same pain kai felt. kai brings up the lifespan thing, something he considers an immutable, unchangeable fact of the universe, just as he considered the societal and familial circumstances he lived in to be impossible to change.

but hatanaka marries ibara, and kai lives to be in a world where he's dating a man. the superficial details dont matter in the end. what matters is that there is love in the world and you are surrounded by people who interact with you and who influence you and who you influence.

so yeah basically what im getting at is yohaji is about autism and queerness and depression and trauma and disability. more than its about youkai or gods or folklore, yohaji is about the Human Experience™ thank you for coming to my ted talk
