Hypersomnia is kicking my ass today. Modafinil, Irish Breakfast Tea, and half of a lemonade Rockstar are doing NOTHING. WTF.
Blessedly, my coworker is letting me take a break to lay down while she watches the kids.

Can i request headcandons of the spiderverse Boys with a shy nurse reader who is constantly tired? Being nurse is a physically and mentally demanding job and i love the dynamic of superhero falling in love with a nurse, but if u don't want to make this request i understand
a/n: thanks for requesting!! as a future worker in healthcare i'm super excited for this request!!
HOBIE is sososo proud of you. he sees how passionate you are about your job and has so much respect for you. you bond over the fact you both save lives and help people, and both adore a night in after a particularly demanding day. while he finds sleepy y/n cute, he does wish you'd be kinder to yourself and take breaks. but he knows you won't, so does his best to support you with lots of hugs.
'you look exhausted, babe. cmere.'
MIGUEL is literally obsessed with you and your passion for work. he admires your kindness and your toughness. he sees how much you want to be strong and be okay, but he also see hows tired you are and just wants to hold you in his arms and let you rest. he knows you'd never leave your work or quit, so tries to make sure that when you get home, dinner is made and the kitchen is clean. he's so malewife tbh.
'i made dinner, mi amor. we could watch a movie after?'
PETER B is a sleepy bastard. he is also constantly exhausted from his work, so he understands. more often than not dinner is a takeaway or something really easy. on weekends or days where neither of you are working, you stay in bed for hours just cuddling and chatting, since you normally don't have time for stuff like that. but it just makes those moments more special, and he's so proud of you and your courage.
'nooo don't get up yet...i need more y/n time...'

NSB (Straud Legacy) Gen 9
Today's (8/1/2024) Episode: Aging Up Is Hard To Do
After Noemi joined Luigi in adulthood, the pair struggled to settle into their new, older, stage of life.
Luigi had been busy after aging up, first grieving and then trying to make Noemi’s birthday perfect. When the vain sim finally checked his mirror, he was horrified by how OLD he looked. Wrinkles and bags under his eyes…!? The self-absorbed sim hated the marks time had left on his face.
It didn’t help his outlook that his eczema and anemia seemed to be getting worse, despite religiously sticking to his tried-and-true maintenance routines. He’d also begun to struggle with excessive thirst. None of it made it easy to meet his own high standards. Luigi was officially in a funk!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for Noemi, she had finally set a date to start the job that Skye’s birth and her health issues had postponed, but it was messing with her head.
She worried that her social struggles would prevent her from making a good impression on her bosses and new peers. On top of that, her inability to exercise the way she wanted to since Skye’s birth due to her surgeries had left her carrying a lot more leftover baby weight than she liked.
The idea of facing her new co-workers and clients when she feeling far from her “best” kicked her anxiety into high gear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Luigi admitted his unhappiness with his new, older look and recent ill health it prompted his fiancée to admit to her own concerns.
Noemi suggested that, since Luigi was feeling under the weather, they start trying to tackle things with a visit to their doctors.
Hopefully, his primary care provider could help him figure out what to do to get his chronic conditions back under control and Dr. Valasquez could help her brainstorm ways to manage her anxiety.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sadly, the outcome of Luigi’s healthcare appointment only worsened his outlook.
His symptoms and answers to questions about his general dietary habits quickly prompted the doctor to order a panel of bloodwork. This revealed that Luigi’s recent fatigue and dry skin weren’t the worsening of his long-standing medical issues, but a sign that he needed to overhaul his lifestyle once again to deal with a new chronic condition: diabetes.
To keep his blood sugar in a healthy range Luigi would now need to avoid many of his favorite breakfast foods and mixology recipes. He hung up the phone in shock, his natural cheerfulness unable to find any bright side to the grim news. Why did these things keep happening to him!?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Noemi didn’t fare much better. Her therapist wasn’t able to suggest anything she didn’t already know, leaving her no better off than before.
Grabbing a late dinner after putting Skye to bed the couple compared notes and tried to brainstorm. Luigi’s first idea came as he remembered how empowering it had felt for him and his cousins to curate their “new looks” after moving in together. Maybe, he told Noemi, they couldn’t change what was at the heart of their problems, but with a little “fashion magic” they could cover over them a bit. She agreed it was worth a try.
When he went on to bitterly joke: “At least my seldom sleepy trait keeps me mostly awake and alert. If only there was a satisfaction potion of chronic-illness-be-gone!” a lightbulb went off in Noemi’s brain. No satisfaction reward would help him, but there was definitely one for her weight concerns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Luigi saw the “Insta Lean” potion pop out of his fiancées inventory he placed a hand on her arm to stop her from chugging it down.
“What?” she asked him “It’s a perfectly safe one time reset. Now that I can exercise again, I’ll easily maintain a weight that makes me happy. Come to think of it, exercising more would be good for both of us. Didn’t the doctor say a regular fitness routine would help you manage your sugar levels?”
“Yes, he did” Luigi replied, “and that’s a great idea. If you’re spending points, do you have enough to pick up Seldom Sleepy too?” At her nod he smiled and continued. “Grab that, and we can burn the midnight oil together, going for late night jogs on the beach and early morning swims!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gesturing back at the potion his face got serious as he continued: “I just wanted you to know, before you drink that, that you are beautiful and loved just the way you are. If your new bosses or your bathroom mirror don’t appreciate you, I hope you realize how much I do.”
Noemi leaned across the table and kissed him softly. “I love you too. However much your love completes me though, I want to go into my new job feeling on top of the world. This expensive little cocktail will boost my confidence in the office Monday morning, when I’ll need all the help I can get!” With that, she tipped the glass back, letting the magical concoction slide down her throat with a cool tingle.
With their “fixer upper” plans in place the pair looked forward to a fashion makeover to highlight their new, more mature, and soon sleeker bodies!

Tumblr media
Are sleepless nights wearing you down? Does stress feel like a constant, unwelcome companion? If yes, we truly understand the weight of these burdens and are here to lighten them with you. Life throws its share of curveballs, but they shouldn’t rob you of peace or comfort. Thankfully, nature offers a gentle yet powerful remedy to these concerns. Yes, we are talking about CBD (also known as Cannabidiol). This remarkable remedy naturally fosters better sleep, calms your mind, and soothes your aches. But how do you find the right CBD product for your needs? No need to worry—we’ve got you covered! In this guide, we’ll delve into specific cannabidiol products, each designed to address these distinct challenges. So, without any further ado, let’s explore these options. CBD Oil for a Good Night’s Sleep Did you know that around 30% of adults experience symptoms of insomnia, and for 10% of them, it severely affects their daily life? If you also toss and turn in your bed occasionally, then cannabidiol oil could help you. In fact, research suggests that CBD is more effective at reducing insomnia symptoms than THC (the component in cannabis known for its psychoactive effects.) All you have to do is take just a few drops of CBD oil before bedtime, and it will help stabilize your sleep patterns and encourage a peaceful night’s sleep. The oil will work with your body’s systems to ease your mind into restfulness. Simple to use and non-habit forming, it’s ideal for anyone looking to improve their sleep quality without complications. CBD Capsules for Stress Relief Do you ever come back from work all exhausted, feeling like you have no strength to do anything else? You’re definitely not alone—63% of U.S. workers would quit their jobs to escape work-related stress. The good news is that you can use cannabidiol capsules to unwind after the daily grind. These convenient capsules help maintain a sense of calm throughout the day, making it easier to handle whatever comes your way. However, when picking CBD products, choose a trusted seller like Express CBD, which controls every step of the production, from seed to shelf. This ensures that the capsules are not only effective but also consistently safe and high quality. With the right CBD capsules, you can leave the stress at work and enjoy your downtime fully. CBD Topicals for Muscle and Joint Pain The next product we have is CBD topicals, which are ideal for relief from muscle and joint pain. You can target the discomfort right at its source by applying creams or balms directly to the affected areas. Cannabidiol’s anti-inflammatory properties are crucial in effectively reducing pain and swelling. In fact, according to research, it can significantly alleviate arthritis pain and inflammation, all without notable side effects. Ideal for those recovering from physical exertion or dealing with everyday aches. It will help you maintain an active and comfortable lifestyle. But if you don’t find any relief, make sure to visit the healthcare professionals. There might be a serious health condition that’s been neglected. By consulting professionals, you can identify the root cause of pain and take appropriate measures. CBD Edibles for Overall Wellness Are you searching for a simple way to boost your well-being? If yes, CBD edibles might just be what you need. These delightful options, such as gummies and chocolates, provide a pleasant and easy method to include cannabidiol into your daily routine. They offer a consistent dosage that can help maintain various aspects of your health. Research suggests CBD edibles can positively affect mood, enhance focus, and bolster immune function by engaging with the body’s endocannabinoid system. These are perfect for any setting, as they offer a discreet and tasty way to promote your overall health. Here’s a pro tip: You can keep a journal of your edible intake and note any changes in your wellness. This will help you tailor your dosage to better suit your health goals and track your progress over time. Plus, it will help prevent overdosing. To Sum It All Up As you explore the world of cannabidiol and its various forms, remember that the journey to finding the right CBD product is deeply personal. Each individual’s body chemistry is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, listening to your body and adjusting your usage according to your experiences and health needs is important. Moreover, consider including other practices like meditation, regular exercise, and a balanced diet to further enhance the benefits of cannabidiol. Combining these healthy habits can provide a comprehensive approach to managing sleep, stress, and pain. Read the full article

Before last year, the public monthly meetings of the board of Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida, were sleepy affairs, typically drawing just a handful of attendees. The hospital, a 98-year-old public healthcare system that serves more than a million patients a year, was considered a crown jewel of the community: A highly rated public safety net institution composed of two hospital buildings and several clinics, its core mission is to serve people who are uninsured or underinsured. At a typical board meeting, members would discuss the hospital’s priorities, from finding healthcare providers who practiced in specialties that the community lacked to building a new cancer center.
So it came as a surprise late last year when attendance at the board meetings began to grow: More than a hundred people showed up in December’s monthly board meeting, then 200 in January, and 300 in February. The attendees, some traveling from hours away, lambasted the hospital for adhering to the CDC’s recommended Covid protocols, accusing emergency care physicians of murdering patients. “We were getting people complaining, and they’ve never even had a family member in the hospital, and they’re talking about the horrible treatment they’ve received,” Dr. James Fiorica, the hospital’s chief medical officer, told me. “You wonder if there is a different agenda than how we treated the particular patient.”
Indeed, the campaign against Sarasota Memorial appears to be part of a coordinated effort of a varied constellation of right-wing groups and individuals. Some have deep ties to the anti-vaccine movement; others are part of the “parents’ rights” movement that has sought to stack school boards with conservative members; a few are ardent Big Lie promoters with ties to the January 6 insurrection. The result is an increasingly unhinged and threatening campaign against the very healthcare workers who saw the community through the worst of the pandemic, says a hospital spokesperson, Kim Savage. “Our board meetings are open to the public, and for the first time, we feel like we have to wand people,” she says. “We worry that the language these groups use might incite someone who is not stable.”
In years past, the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Board hasn’t been a political group—most of the members were retired executives of local businesses who wanted to give back to their community. But in 2022, recalls Savage, the burgeoning medical freedom movement—which opposed pandemic restrictions such as mask and vaccine mandates and which Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also has championed—was having a moment. Four hospital board candidates ran on a so-called medical freedom platform, and three of them successfully unseated former board members. “People were not sure what ‘health freedom’ stood for, but it sounded good,” Savage says.
The Sarasota Memorial Hospital had already developed a reputation in the medical freedom community, probably thanks to Stew Peters, a far-right live streamer and producer of the viral anti-vaccine movie “Died Suddenly.” In an August 2021 episode of his show, Peters accused the hospital of denying Covid patients ivermectin, the deworming drug touted by former president Donald Trump that has been shown to be ineffective against Covid. “It would appear that the treatment of patients is being deliberately made to worsen the condition of patients reported to be hospitalized with Covid-19.” He went on, “Hitler would be very proud of what’s happening at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.” That wasn’t the only time Peters accused hospitals of withholding ivermectin from Covid patients—he also urged his followers to call and complain to a hospital in Minnesota and another in Virginia, resulting in a torrent of hateful messages at those hospitals, as well. In September 2021, Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist Alex Jones ran a segment about Sarasota Memorial similar to that from Stew Peters.

Two posts from Sarasota Moms for America’s Facebook page
Tumblr media
In November, Sarasota Moms for America chapter head Tanya Parus posted a video in which she said, “Please, please mark every meeting off on your calendar, and do what you can to clear up that time to be at these hospital board meetings.” That was a tried-and-true strategy: Thanks to a boost by Florida governor Ron DeSantis, parents’ rights groups have had great success in flipping school boards. Now some of their members appeared to be moving on to public hospitals, as well, in an effort to mold hospital policy to fit the “medical freedom” agenda.
At the unexpectedly packed meetings in late 2022 and early 2023, Savage recalls, the new medical freedom board members themselves were generally courteous. The tone of the meetings, however, gradually began to change. Attendees used the public comment period to demand an investigation into the hospital’s Covid protocols, all of which reflected the CDC guidelines. So in early 2023, the hospital conducted a months-long, peer-reviewed investigation, with data provided by the healthcare consultancy Premier, Inc. The conclusion was that the hospital’s Covid outcomes were excellent by national standards: 91 percent of the 13,000 patients the hospital treated survived—a mortality rate 24 percent lower than the national average, according to the review.
But the medical activists weren’t satisfied.
With an unprecedented 300 people at the February meeting, attendees lit into Sarasota Hospital physicians, accusing them of killing Covid patients. A tweet claiming that one speaker had been thrown out of the meeting for criticizing the hospital’s protocols went viral. (According to Savage, the speaker was escorted out because he attempted to whisper something in the ear of a board member, which alarmed security officers.)
That’s when things got really chaotic. Mike Flynn, a resident of Sarasota, former national security advisor to former President Donald Trump, and conspiracy theorist extraordinaire, tweeted after the February board meeting, “I attended this meeting and the Sarasota Memorial Hospital took what could have been a rebuilding of trust and further damaged this institution with a ‘fox inside the henhouse investigation.’” He added, “Their little report is not the end of the investigation. More to follow.” A few days later, he tweeted, “It may be time to privatize this hospital.” Flynn has established an organization in neighboring Venice called The Hollow 2A, whose mission is to help “Americans gather to lawfully take back our country.” In addition to advocating for Second Amendment rights, as the name suggests, the group has also called on its members to attend school board meetings as well as the Sarasota Hospital board meetings.
Dr. Jane Ruby, another live streamer and right-wing political pundit who has a show on Peters’ network, devoted a February episode to Sarasota Memorial, titled “Killing Hospital Begins Cover-Up.” Ruby referred to a doctor at Sarasota Hospital as “an arrogant, condescending piece of crap,” and criticized the staff. “You enabled that hospital to not only murder innocent people but to make millions of dollars doing it,” she thundered. “They’re coming for all of you. You’re all the targets now.” Stew Peters posted the episode to the 270,000 followers on his Telegram channel. In her own channel, which has 103,000 subscribers, Ruby named individual Sarasota Hospital doctors as being complicit in harming patients.
Over the next five days, board members and hospital employees received dozens of harassing messages. “The hate in these messages was hard to bear for our staff,” Savage says. “It was like a targeted hate campaign.” Many of the messages had threatening tones, suggesting that the doctors who had failed to prescribe ivermectin would be punished. While there is no indication callers were told what to say, many messages followed a similar pattern. The voicemails Savage shared with Mother Jones would begin with what seemed like a polite introduction to some constructive criticism. But then, the callers would devolve into ad hominem attacks. “Good morning, are you a patient advocate?” began one voicemail. It went on, “They hung people at the Nuremberg trials when they were found guilty. They used piano wire. So do you want piano wire or hemp or nylon rope?”
In addition to the onslaught of similar messages to hospital staff, commenters flooded physician reputation sites—where patients leave reviews, like Yelp for doctors—with one-star reviews for Sarasota Memorial Hospital doctors.
Fiorica and Savage are bracing for more: The next board meeting is coming up on March 20, and a protest has been planned beforehand—Savage expects the attendees to move from the protest to the board meeting. According to the Facebook event page, protesters will have a chance to “learn about the egregious behaviors behind your local hospital doors” and “demand Gov. DeSantis investigate these hospitals.” So far, neither DeSantis nor his surgeon general, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, have commented on Sarasota Memorial. Nor have any of the organizers who have been contacted by Mother Jones responded.
The organizers of the rally planned for March 20 are Mike Flynn’s group The Hollow 2A, Moms for America, and a third, the Zelenko Freedom Foundation, a medical freedom group named after the late Vladimir Zelenko, the New York doctor who originally suggested the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a Covid cure to the Trump Administration in 2020. Though Vladimir Zelenko died of lung cancer last year, the foundation says it is carrying on his legacy through selling telemedicine consults and a line of supplements, including one for children. Zelenko supplements are also sold through the website of The Wellness Company, the anti-vaccine medical practice that recently offered free care to those affected by the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Dr. Peter McCullough, the Wellness Company’s chief medical officer and a scion of the anti-vaccine movement, tweeted about the February board meeting to his 782,000 followers. “Ashamed for [Sarasota Memorial] and all those in the room,” he wrote. “Hospital boards are obligated to hear all points of view on therapies to help patients.”
In a press release about the March event, the Zelenko Freedom Foundation wrote, “We believe Sarasota Memorial Hospital, by implementing Covid-19 hospital protocols resulting in injury and death while ignoring proven early treatment options, has engaged in reckless behavior resulting in irreparable harm. Patients have reported being denied effective treatments such as Ivermectin, Hydroxychloroquine, and other treatments while being subjected to experimental therapies some of which were proven deadly in previous studies.”
The co-chair of the Zelenko Freedom Foundation board is Ann Vandersteel, who promoted the “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory during the 2016 presidential campaign, which asserted that Comet Pizza, a Washington, DC, pizza restaurant was secretly hosting a ring of child predators superintended by Hillary Clinton. Vandersteel is also a member of the sovereign citizen movement, a fringe group that believes members are exempt from US laws. The Zelenko Freedom Foundation’s executive director is a Florida life coach named Cindy Chafian, who was subpoenaed by Congress for her early involvement in planning the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol. Chafian is also the director of coalitions and engagement of Moms for America.
This, of course, comes at the end of a grueling three years for the hospital, during which the staff worked overtime to serve patients as the pandemic raged. Now, those same providers are bearing the brunt of the harassment campaign, fielding hostile messages from people outside of their own community. “All we can think about is that if people google Sarasota Memorial, this is what they’ll see,” Savage says. “Who wants to come to a community under fire? We’re just trying to hunker down and do what we’re here to do, which is take care of patients.”
Fiorica also is concerned about the long-term effects of all this on the medical community. “I worry that if this continues we’re going to lose physicians,” he says. “How would you feel if you went to a meeting and someone called you a murderer right to your face?”
The aggrieved attendees at the meetings, the hostile voicemails, the one-star reviewers—the campaign was designed to look like a groundswell of complaints from people who were fed up with a hospital that just kept dropping the ball. In reality, it is the work of groups that “all have different angles and goals and targets,” Savage explains. “But they’re all coming together right here.”

The Rittenhouse Trial will answer the question of whether a mommy-anointed reactionary sociopath has the right to
- Cross state lines to ‘protect property’ (not his family’s) by brandishing an military-style ‘hunting’ rifle and if necessary kill whomever.
- Stand 10+ feet from a shirtless (no concealed weapons) empty handed white advocate of Social Justice
- Slaughter the Social Justice advocate in a fusillade of bullets including shooting the deceased in the back.
Then the reactionary sociopath NOT be convicted of homicide by an 11/12ths white jury in a State court
Because that’s what the Second Amendment is all about.
Did I trigger anyone with ‘sociopath’?
After shooting Mr.Rosenbaum, Kyle Rittenhouse can be seen on video making a cell phone call.
Did he call 911 for EMTs as he jogged away without looking back?
Uh huh. Sociopath.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
The Second Amendment exists for the sole purpose of insuring that reactionary sociopaths are not deprived of the weapons they need to terrorize and murder
Lazy but complaining Black people
Lazy but complaining Indigenous people
Lazy but complaining Spanish heritage brown people
Lazy but treacherous Mideasterners
Asians of any Ethnicity or gender because of y’know Pearl Harbor and Covid.
Sneaky sleepy-eyed baby-blood drinking Jewish people who are representatives of an international cabal
Depraved LGBTQ+2s people
The ever changing roster of ‘threatening’ immigrants’ which once did but no longer automatically includes caucasians like Greeks, Italians, Portugese, Eastern Europeans.
Anyone of any ethnicity or gender not speaking a language other than English in a public place.
Uppity, complaining and falsely accusing after ‘asking for it’ females
Labor Union Members of any ethnicity or gender who call for higher wages and increased safety measures.
Government officials of any ethnicity or gender who don’t kowtow to reactionaries demands
Women’s Healthcare professionals of any gender whose work aids female autonomy
Economically dispossessed of any gender or ethnicy because reactionaries can shoot them and no real inverstigation will be performed - so it’s ‘practice’
Medical or government officials of any ethnicity or gender responsible for containing outbreaks of diseases.
Teachers and students, happy shoppers in malls, happy party-goers of any ethnicity or gender and who fail to show required deference to the underage Norman Bates who raid their gun-hugging reactionary families unsecured arsenal to punish their ostracization.
Ex-Co-workers of any ethnicity or gender who have held on to jobs just when the reactionary lost theirs (NOT ONCE in hundreds of shootings attacking the higher ups who made the firing decision. Never higher than immediate supervisor)
State and local elected policy and lawmakers, historically white males but of late, of any gender or ethnicity who propose or vote measures for social justice, school lunches, healthcare etc etc etc
Any advocates or protestors of any ethnicity or gender who are for social justice.
ALL of the foregoing have experienced multiple homicides often mass shootings by largely white cis het male reactionaries using legally purchased and unregistered high capacity semi-automatic firearms.
ALWAYS this terror and murder benefits the 1% of the 1% by inhibiting concerted action to improve social and working conditions.
IMPROVEMENTS in equality and general welfare that would REDUCE profits.
WISELY the wealthiest 10% of the population - the ONLY VOTERS 1755 to 1800+ - included a counter to the inevitable expansion of voting rights: the Second Amendment.
THE SECOND AMENDMENT insures the continued existence of an unpaid and self-funded Secret Police hair-triggered to suppress progressive social forces. Suppress economic, gender, legal equality. Suppress safety or regulatory measures.
If the 1% of the 1% didn’t have the willfully brain-dead like Mommy Rittenhouse transporting and arming the Kyles, the oligarchs would have to reach into their own pants and PAY thugs. BUY the guns and the ammo. Provide transportation. Violates their sacred principal: “Always work with other People’s money.”
Obviously it doesn’t matter to the 1% of the 1% of Kyle is freed or convicted. Anymore than if he had died. Easily replaced since, as their business model outlines: “There’s a sucker born every minute.”
Demonstrating that in “USA! USA! USA! We’re #1 - NO LIVES MATTER. ONLY PROFITS and PROPERTY.”

Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine Reflects on a Year Plagued by Sleeplessness
Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine Reflects on a Year Plagued by Sleeplessness is courtesy of Elly Mackay's Sleep Blog
Psychologists add perspective to 2020 and share tips for better sleep in 2021.
By Earl C. Crew, PhD, Kelly Baron, PhD, DBSM, Michael V. DeSanctis, PhD, LP, ABPP, DBSM, Christina McCrae, PhD, CBSM, and Skye O. Margolies, PhD, DBSM
Having used the past few months to ponder it in full, the conclusion about 2020 remains the same: the year was a bit of a nightmare for sleep.
Between the COVID-19 pandemic, racial violence, pervasive wildfires, a contentious election season, and an economic collapse, it’s hardly surprising that people with insomnia, nightmares, and other concerns about poor sleep have flooded sleep medicine clinics.
At a time when our immune systems and mental health need as much support as they can get, sleep is like a frontline worker—essential. But how can we possibly sleep well when the future has been so uncertain? Especially since COVID-19 robbed many of their routines, social connection, and coping resources.
Early into the pandemic, we at the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine (SBSM) created a task force to help the public better understand how sleep might change in response to the pandemic, and how best to protect sleep even amidst the chaos. We published our top recommendations for keeping sleep on track.
Now that 2020 is behind us, but with the pandemic still raging, we share some additional thoughts about evolving challenges for sleep, as well as provide tips for getting through them.
[RELATED: After 4-year Gap, Behavioral Sleep Medicine Has a New Credential]
Why Sleep Has Suffered
For our ancestors, sleep was a high-risk activity, leaving them vulnerable to predation. When danger—like a saber-toothed tiger—lurked nearby, the fight-or-flight system provided a life-saving switch to override sleep and get to safety.
In 2020, our primary predator has been COVID-19. This invisible menace has kept us recurrently on-edge—constantly in fight-or-flight—making sleep difficult for many.
Understandably, some have turned to medications, alcohol, or other substances to help get to sleep. This often backfires by worsening sleep quality or creating dependence. For many, what may have started as a few nights of stress-induced sleeplessness back in March has morphed into chronic insomnia.
[RELATED: CBT-I Works in Young Drinkers to Reduce Insomnia Symptoms & May Help Lessen Alcohol Use Too]
Some Have Suffered More Than Others
But not everyone has had the same success navigating stress and the threats to sleep in 2020. COVID-19 has disproportionately affected communities of color, with minority Americans more likely to be out of work, hospitalized, or dead die due to COVID-19.
Similar disparities are also found for sleep. Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander citizens are more likely to get fewer hours of sleep and experience more sleep interruptions compared to non-Hispanic Whites.
The burdens of systemic racism and discrimination, as well as having fewer opportunities to get enough sleep due to competing responsibilities, may explain some of these racial/ethnic disparities in sleep. This gap likely widened in 2020—due to added stress from the pandemic, as well as from the incidents of racial violence, police brutality, and resulting protests that occurred during the summer.
Children and Teens’ Sleep
Another casualty of the pandemic began in March and April, when schools closed and 57+ million kids in the United States started attending school virtually. Almost immediately, Zoom classrooms were flooded with hordes of sleep-deprived zombies.
Kids lost much of their structured activities, social interactions, and time outside under the sun. All of the things that kept their biological rhythms on track became wobbly. The loss of a consistent sleep-wake routine set them up for increased stress and fewer ways to cope. That’s why your child is having more nightmares or why your teen may be even crankier than usual.
What’s more, school closures took a toll on the nation’s parents, now forced to become impromptu educators while juggling everything else. Fall arrived and some schools returned to in-person instruction, only for surges of virus cases in “hotspots” to trigger a sudden return to virtual learning. Parents must now prepare to immediately react to whatever new protocol is needed for tomorrow.
There are no perfect solutions for how to teach our nations’ children during a global pandemic, but any parent is likely to tell you that this pattern is simply unsustainable. How can healthy sleep occur under these conditions?
Here’s How to Cope
Even though things may often feel apocalyptic and chaotic, we are not totally powerless and there are things we can do to protect our sleep health.
Get up at the same time each day.
“Sleep is a core human health behavior,” explains Christina McCrae, PhD, president of the SBSM. “When things seem overwhelming, commit to small behavior changes rather than taking on radical shifts in routine. The best way to start is through consistency.”
Getting up at the same time will help to reset your biological rhythms. The more predictable those are, the more easily your brain can help you to sleep well at night and function well during the day.
Make the bedroom all about sleep and only get in bed when sleepy.
This protects your bedroom for sleep. It also helps your brain to lose that habit of turning “on” as soon as you get into bed, because it will learn that the bed is place for sleep, a sleepy place, not a get-stuff-done place.
Limit screen time before bed.
The stimulation from your TV show or videogame might artificially override your brain’s sleepy cues.
Say “no” to work in the late evening. Unwind before bedtime.
Stretching, journaling, yoga, family time, or meditation can be great for unwinding before bed so the day’s stressors don’t follow you to it.
Increase daylight exposure and get outside early.
Believe it or not, sunlight is sleep’s best friend. More light exposure during the day helps to make your circadian rhythms robust, which helps you sleep better at night.
Put on pants. Go outside. Stay physically and socially active.
Not only will this give you a much-needed mood boost, it will also help to boost your circadian rhythms and give you more restful sleep at night.
This can be easier said than done. And sometimes, even following these recommendations may not be enough to solve your sleep concerns.
“If you are not good with self-management, or you have more severe sleep problems, see a behavioral sleep medicine specialist,” McCrae recommends.
These healthcare providers with specific expertise in sleep can conduct a more thorough assessment of your sleep problems and create a personalized treatment plan to improve your sleep and quality of life.
McCrae also stresses that seeking out professional help is crucial if you’re also experiencing serious mood issues, such as depression or suicidal thoughts. Awareness for when we’ve reached our personal limit is critical and seeking out professional help is a key next-step.

How to Date a Doctor...
(Or med student, nurse, physio, pharmacist, etc)
I remember discussing this on tumblr a while back, and occasionally someone asks a medblr for some advice, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to bring up some suggestions on how to deal with medics in your life.
Going out:
Our timetables can be awful. We’ll be busy at times you’ll want to meet; it’s really not a sign we’re not interested, we just physically can’t be there when we’d like to be. Ditto if our jobs involve rotating to different places. Believe me, we find it as frustrating as you do.
Work can be emotionally, mentally and physically draining. We spend some of our free time tired, sleepy, grumpy or indisposed to meet. If we’re sleepy or not much fun sometimes after a run of horrible shifts, it’s not personal. I’m not advocating putting up with a medic who spends most of their time being an antisocial jerk, but please bear in mind that sometimes we’ll just be exhausted.
So when it comes to going out, we might need to do things that are low effort; sometimes it’ll be dinner instead of something that involves walking, or even netflix rather than going out at all. Or... we might want to do things that are more active particularly because we want to make the most of our time and we’re finally out of the hospital so we want to live our entire life at once.
We might be used to eating or sleeping at weird times. If we turn up to a date and we’re not hungry, it’s not personal. Likewise if you notice that we’ve forgotten to eat/been too exhausted to eat, we appreciate when somoene reminds us to take care of ourselves, too. We’re often so fixated on taking care of others that we really can forget to take care of ourselves.
Because we work strange hours and are generally busy, you will have to be good at enjoying your own life, too; with or without us. Dating a doc isn’t for someone who feels like they need a partner to always be around every evening, and who needs their SO to accompany them to every event; we just physically won’t always be able to be there.
On the plus side, this means that we’re usually very accepting of SOs having hobbies and interests. Dating a doc is great for people who are more independent in themselves, because you can bet we’ll probably be too busy with our own lives to smother you in yours.
However, it does mean that if your timetable is also busy, you’ll both need to work extra hard to make things work. Unfortunately, drifting apart or struggling to find time to be together can be a real problem, particularly if you are both shift workers. It’s not impossible, though; lots of docs and nurses end up with other docs and nurses, and they make it work!
As I said, we end up staying late, or having to cover for colleagues. It’s a pain for us to organise leave or holidays, and our timetable can dominate our life. Having a doc or nurse in your life means living around complext timetables. This can be really trying for us as well as for you.
If you can, try to take some of the organisational burden from them, particularly if your job is less busy or time intensive than theirs. When your working life is already a massive, never-ending to - do list, it makes a big difference when somoene does their bit to make your personal life a bit less exhausting. You don’t need to become their PA, just be considerate.
Conversation:
I hope you like medical anecdotes. Because you’re going to hear them.
Our work is full of life and death stuff, and there’s a lot of ‘work’ stuff we have to do outside of work, so it can dominate our lives. Sometimes we need to get that off our chest. You don’t have to understand, but it’s nice if you can listen.
That said, you may have to gently remind them that there is more to talk about than just work. Whilst being with someone means talking about things that are important to them, it’s important that the person you are with doesn’t bore you constantly, either. We need distraction from work for our sanity, and you need to talk about things that are not our work, too. And it’s only fair that we don’t bore you to death.
Most of our friends are probably medics. Apologies for all of the medical conversations you’ll be stuck listening to because you’re hanging out with an entire group of medics.
If our work talk is too gory for you, please let us know. You’re seeing a person who’ll probably certify someone dead, stick a finger up someone else’s butt, look at several necrotic ulcers  and lots of people about their bowel habits all before lunchtime, so we tend to lose our sense of what is appropriate dinner conversation. No matter how strong your stomach is, we’ll probably stray into conversations that’ll test your tolerance, without even realising it. We spend so much time talking to other medics, that we can forget what normal people consider appropriate for casual conversation.
You think that we might always be into really intellectual entertainment (and we are, at least some of the time), but every doctor I know also needs to chill with really brainless entertainment once in a while because sometimes you just need to watch something that doesn’t make you think at all.
Don’t let their being a doctor or nurse intimidate you. If I had a pound for every guy who said “well, my job’s a lot less important/exciting/etc”, I’d be living somewhere a lot nicer. Healthcare professionals are normal people just like you; we’re really not some kind of class apart. We’ve got a dorky side or a quiet side or a goblin side, and we’ve got plenty of insecurities, too. If you put us on a pedestal, it makes it hard to have a genuine relationship.
Equally, if you date a doctor who makes you feel inferior, ditch them. You deserve to feel like an equal in any relationship. You have every right to expect courtesy from whoever you are seeing.
We are secretly dumbasses. People expect us to be smart all the time, but we’re human. We have weaknesses just like everyone else. It’s another reason you shouldn’t put us on a pedestal; we want to be loved for the dorks we are, rather than for some kind of intellectual ideal we can’t live up to.
Please don’t call us at work. We really can’t talk at work, though messaging is fine as we can respond to those if free. But be understanding that your medical paramour is probably super-busy at work to the point that checking their phone is not an option. Please don’t be offended if we take a while to reply.
Being a part of each other’s lives /Living together:
We may be super organised to an anal-retentive degree, or we may be completely scatterbrained when it comes to having non-work stuff together. If we’re having a particularly bad time at work, we might need a bit of patience or prompting regarding shared life stuff. That’s not to say that the non-medic should do everything, but be on the lookout for when the medic in your life is overwhelmed with stuff and when you can give them a hand. If that’s not something you’re good at spotting, you can always just ask.
People will often think you are lucky (”aren’t doctors, like, rich?”) and that it’s prestigious (”oh, a doctor, wow! lucky you! Free medical advice!”), but that’s not entirely fair on you, because dating doctors or nurses can be hard work! I think the people who put up with us (or rather the effect our work has on our entire lives) deserve a ton of credit. It’s not easy, and not everyone can do it (nor should anyone have to). And besides, you are a smart and interesting person in your own right, not defined by the job your SO does.
We deal with emotionally draining crap; sometimes we see some horrible stuff that we struggle to deal with. It won’t be easy for you to see someone you care about struggle with this, particularly if it’s not something that you can relate to. The way we deal with it can vary, and we may not always be able to cope, or deal with it in a healthy way. It’s not your fault if we’re struggling, and you shouldn’t feel like you’re expected to be a counselling service.
You might get pretty familiar with the signs of aniety and depression; a lot of medics can suffer from burnout or mental illness. The strain on your partner might also put a strain on your mental health. Look after each other and get help if needed. You absolutely shouldn’t suffer alone, and neither should they.
In the long run, you have to be able to trust your partner. We work silly hours, but you need to get to know someone well enough to trust that if they say they have a late shift, they aren’t playing around with someone else. That doesn’t mean you can’t have suspicions if warranted, but dating a doctor might be difficult for someone who is still getting over being cheated on, or who tends to jealousy and suspicions easily. We tend to have odd hours and stay late at work a lot, and we’ll always have plausible sounding reasons for not being around. So it helps if you aren’t someone who feels insecure or jealous easily.
If we wanted our nursing colleagues/fellow doctors/whoever at work, we’d be with them. It’s not uncommon for partners to feel a little jealous of the time their partner spends with work colleagues, but you are no less of a catch than any of their colleagues. And if they wanted their colleagues so much they would have already been with them.
That said. Don’t assume that doctors are all nice; there are plenty of people among us who aren’t necessarily good or honest. Trust a person’s actions over their words.  There are players amongst us, so don’t assume that just because someone is a doctor that it makes them a nice person; evaluate us according to the exact same criteria you’d use for anyone else.  You absolutely deserve to be treated with the same level of respect and honesty from one of us as you do from any other partner; there are no excuses for hurtful behaviour. Being a doctor or nurse is not a free pass to be a nasty person.
Don’t let a medic treat you like a servant or someone who is beneath them. No matter what you do, if you are dating them then you deserve every bit the same level of respect and courtesy that you give them. No matter how much of a hotshot your friends or family might think them, they are just a normal person to you, equal in every way. I remember an interview with some eminent doctor, in which the interviewer asked something like “What’s it like being married to someone like you?” and the person replied something like “At home I’m just ‘dad’ or a husband, like anyone else”. And that sums it up; we’re just normal people to those in our lives.
Anyone got more tips to add?
