Ranking the Mainline DanganRonpa Entries

Hey guys. The mastermind ranking list brought a lot of discussion and attention here, and I had a lot of fun making it. Now it's time to start list that won the second place on the poll; ranking all of the main series entries.

Oh, beloved DanganRonpa. How you started out as a niche spiritual successor to Ace Attorney, to now becoming your own big entity that can rival the best of them. Where have the years gone?

Quick rules to explain the process here:

-Like I said this is only the mainline entries. Fanganronpas like the Another series, Rebirth, Blowback, etc. will not be counted.

-That being said, I will also not be including any side content like Summer Camp S, The Kirigiri, Togami and Ultra Despair Hagakure novels, Killer Killer, IF, and Zero. For one, because a lot of them don't do much to add to DanganRonpa's overarching story. And two, a good half of them I have not seen nor am I interested in doing so because they don't much for the main series anyway. Apologies...

-This list is going to be INCREDIBLY SUBJECTIVE AND OPINIONATED, if you disagree with any of the spots I've put them in; that is completely fine, just don't be a jerk about it.

-And finally, the following will contain massive spoilers for the DanganRonpa series and their respective games and entries. View at your own risk. But considering this is on a story blog that takes place after three of the entries here, maybe you shouldn't be here anyway, but I'm still warning others just to be safe.

#5 DanganRonpa 1: Trigger Happy Havoc

Why is the subtitle for the game way bigger and upfront on the cover while the actual series name is way smaller? I don't get it...

To kick off our ranking list, it's the game that started it all. The very first DanganRonpa game, Trigger Happy Havoc! Now don't get wrong, even though it's this low doesn't make it the "worst", just my personal least favorite out of all of them. I mean I would have had to like the first game to some degree if I stuck with the series this long, right? I think this game has just aged......poorly...

The premise of the game starts out very well, each student is trapped in an enclosed environment and the only form of escape is to kill another classmate. This sort of environment encourages distrust of others so that when it's inevitably time for a murder, not only are you devastated that the character you were growing attached died but also saddened at how another character you liked could do something like that. That's all fine and dandy......here's the problem...

You can't convince me these guys were EVER friends! Not only is the player supposed to get attached to the other characters, the characters themselves have to from lasting trust and bonding experiences so that they too can feel despair. But barring a few good exceptions, it's not really done with anyone else. Let give a few examples:

Could imagine Sakura getting well with Kiyotaka? ......Hard, right?

Could imagine Leon getting along with Touko? ......No, right?

Could imagine Celeste getting along with Aoi? HA! Right?!

And that's not taking into account despair loving diva Junko and her sister Mukuro who would barely have any identity of her own.

Like I said; there are some great relationships here, I am not ignoring that. I was saddened with Kiyotaka having to get separated from Mondo too, and even more saddened when Aoi tried to get everyone killed because she believed the reason for her best friend's suicide was everyone else. But the comradery of the group doesn't work as well as it should or could have been we focus on these smaller groups and leaving behind the characters that exactly fit into a group of there own. Many of the other games fix this by having much more morale boosting events and activities for the rest of the remaining cast, meanwhile I can't exactly say the same here. As an unfortunate downside of this, it makes some of the characters bland and forgettable at best. Cast makes or breaks your visual novel game people, and the cast of THH leaves a lot to be desired.

The pacing's also very slow here. Because Monokuma doesn't outright say that a blackened has to survive and outwit the others in a class trial, the first chapter feels much more sluggish as a result. Future entries would go on to fix that issue by telling them right out the gate. And like I said, because there are hardly any events or anything of note going with the cast at times, most chapters play like: "waking up, meet up with everyone else, talking about what happened, explore new area, Free Time, Free Time, sleep, wake up, meet up, Free Time, Free Time, motive, sleep, wake up, meet up, Free Time, Free Time, sleep, Free Time, Free Time, oh hey someone kicked the bucket"

The slowness also translates to the gameplay as well. Having no breaks means going through 1 to 2 hour trials in one big burst. The joke of "Naegi, telling them" is very much true here and it's normally him, Kyoko and whenever he's not being a dick, Byakuya carrying the trials with everyone else offering their input every once in a while. "Gee, I wonder if we could spice this up by having other characters object to your line of thinking?.......NAH!" The minigames are serviceable as well, I mean Hangman's Gambit was never bit it's fine here, Climatic Return is always awesome, and while MTB is fine I just want to talk to the person that suggessted having this sort of action take place NUMEROUS TIMES in some of the later trials! And I have an unexplained, visceral, HATRED for the RE:Action prompt. Imagine having to watch and read some text explaing important information to just suddenly STOP TO A HAULT and press another button to get more info because your character to ask, "what do you mean?" by himself.

All in all, while Trigger Happy Havoc may not hold up as well as most of its predecessors, and maybe some of my reasons boil down to me spoiling myself on this game but watching a let's play of it and skipping down to see who survived, that doesn't mean there isn't a whole lot good to this game. The characters I do care about are written pretty well, Makoto is a good protagonist for this game and works in a number of ways, the trials are fairly simple to what we get later down the line, and the atmosphere works well for a killing game environment. I just have a few issues with it personally that question if I want to go back to it on numerous occasions. But as I said, if I didn't like the first game somewhat I wouldn't really be here, would I?

Just remember your first shot isn't always going to be your best, and that's okay.

#4 DanganRonpa V3: Killing Harmony

I consider V3 to be the Fire Emblem Fates of the franchise..............now I know that made sense to a whopping two of you, so let me explain.

Fire Emblem Fates comes off the massive success of its predecessor, Awakening, and fixes a lot of its issues. The gameplay is much more advanced and easy to understand, the music is really good, the environments look amazing, and there is a ton of content for many to enjoy. .......Everything else with it?

OH BOOOOOOOOYYYYY!!!!!!!!

A great number of characters are incredibly one note, has an insane number of unwanted fanservice moments, has numerous localization controversy, and the story is so GODDAMN convoluted, confusing and messy, surrounding itself in a mountain of incest!

.........So onto V3...

DanganRonpa V3 comes off the massive success of its predecessors, and fixes a lot of issues. The gameplay and mingames are much more easier to understand and scrum debating is awesome, the music is fantastic, the graphics and environments take use of its new console software, and there is a lot of content to enjoy. .....Everything else with it?

OH BOOOOOOOOYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!

Some of the characters are incredibly one note, has insane number of unwanted fanservice moments, has numerous localization controversy, and the story is so GODDAMN convoluted, confusing, twisted and messy, surrounding itself in a MOUNTAIN of incest!

..........Ya get it now?

I don't want it to seem like I'm ragging a whole lot on V3, but there are a lot of things that this game does that is straight up bad.

I will be nice and start with the good first however. I really like the cast and their designs, very unique and hard to forget even if I tried. The Ultimate Academy is a pretty cool set-piece for the killing game to take place in; having it be closed off to the world like Hope's Peak Academy but open to see the sky and other areas like Jabberwock Island, a pretty decent blend of the two. The music is a phenomenal treat for the ears, and for the eyes comes amazing sprite work for the new characters as well as Monokuma and great use of angles not before seen in the class trials. The new minigames for this game, Scrum Debate and Mass Panic Debates are also hella fun. And the bonus content is spectacular with Salmon Mode and Ultimate Talent Development Plan treating the fans to some actually GOOD fanservice.

That's about where the compliments end unfortunately. The other minigames aren't that fun to play through, Mind Mine is pointless and I don't enjoy it. V3 is notorious for having the ridiculous and mind stretching logic of all the class trials and that is a fact, Seesaw murders anyone? The back route mechanic sounds good on paper, and I'm not going to pretend that actually having multiple routes in a trial isn't a tremendous amount of work to pull off, but most of the optional ones are just time wasters as we don't learn much and just end up back on the correct path after a few minutes, so one has to wonder the point of all that. While I do like this cast, there are some stinkers that bring it down for me and can't compete with other ones. What the fuck is with all the incest in this writing?! And of course...the big two...

Why did we replace Kaede, a unique talent personality type who had tremendous potential for the first ever girl, main series, DanganRonpa, class trial protagonist.....for Shuichi? A low self-esteem, doesn't feel like he belongs, boy protagonist?

THIS IS THE THIRD TIME WE'VE HAD SOMETHING LIKE THIS!

We were this close to greatness....this close... And I love Shuichi too, but it still hurts everytime I think about it man, come on! Kaede could have done great things for this story or even have the two share the role of dual-swapping protagonists! And oh, that story though...

I get it, the power of fiction is real and it affects reality,and it does work for this game's overall theme of truth and lies, blah blah blah... But with how many times they HAMMER the message of: "Everything's fake! Everything you know and lie isn't real and it didn't happen! Look at you, the fans, you love killing games! You love DanganRonpa! Hahahahaha!" The message work so well it loops back around to feel insulting to not only the "fake" audience of the TV Show series, but also the auidence that's playing the game now. And apparently must have not worked enough because we still have people making videos on what they want in DanganRonpa 4, as well fans like me still being here and creating content discussion for it right now.

And with how ridiculous some of the characters' backstory are, such Gonta living with actual dinosaur people, Kaede preforming for famous kings across the world, Kirumi being the FUCKING PRIME MINISTER, maybe these were the clues all along to help you figure out this place was a fictional world. And I know that this is the series where a high school girl can overthrow the world into chaos, demigods are basically born left and right, and ghosts and aliens directly affect the plot, but I think we should have some sort of groundedness to this world, no?

Bottom line: V3 is a good game but has a mediocre story and because this is the last game in the series(maybe?), it leaves nothing but a bad taste in my mouth. I swear these writers aren't even trying anymore, DanganRonpa 17 was the best.

#3 DanganRonpa 3: The End Of Hope's Peak Academy

*THE BIGGEST AUDIBLE GASP KNOWN TO MANKIND*

Mod Freeze, isn't DanganRonpa 3 relegated as one of the worst installments in the franchise by the fans? Yes.

Mod Freeze, isn't the Final Killing Game a massive jumbled mess of time management, rules, and scope? Yes.

Mod Freeze, didn't DanganRonpa 3 not utilize a whole bunch of its characters as well as the DR2 cast? Yes.

Mod Freeze, isn't DanganRonpa 3 responsible for instilling the idea of the Remnants of Despair simply being brainwashed? Yes.

Mod Freeze, is this straw-man arguments tired out and old? Yes.

Mod Freeze, why is Danganronpa 3 so high? Well my dear reader, that is a long and extravagant answer.....

I like it.

........................

....That's it.

I'm not here to paint you a picture on how DR3 is the greatest piece of media in the history of existence, or even sway your mind from thinking that DR3 is so garbage that it could be mistaken for a Garbodor. I like DanganRonpa 3, for the simple fact that I enjoyed my time with it.

Now I am not blind to the various things DanganRonpa 3 has done wrong. It doesn't utilize most of the branch leaders well or hardly gives you any reason to care about them. A good chunk of the DR2 cast get left behind in the dust, especially those that should garner more attention like those present for the Twilight Syndrome case. And those that took the time to read and explore other lore such as DR0 do not get rewarded. Skips what could be interesting scenarios such as Chisa's time in the reserve course or even a few moments with the THH cast. And that's not even mentioning the Final Killing Game with all its confusing and convoluted bullshit.

But honestly, despite all that, I didn't mind any of that too much. I really liked the idea of a free-for-all killing game that Future Arc tried to implement, and seeing the fun and cute moments of the 77th class was such a delight. Some characters ere unfortunately narratively more built important than others, but some of them stuck out to me for the best of reasons. Chisa's fun mommy-sue nature, Seiko's tragic backstory and relationship with Ruruka, Koichi how he's trying to protect and be there for Kyoko, and a lot of the designs here for these guys kick ass.

Great Gozu is a more well-rounded character than a good chunk of others from THH and V3, and I can and will fight you on that.

Some of the returning cast was done really good here too, a real Chiaki for added wholesomeness, Hajime with his doubts of self-worth due to lack of talent, Imposter shined more than I thought he would, dude would ever imagine Imposter getting some shine in the main series, never me, holy cow. And we explored other characters who we hadn't known more about, like Izuru finally making him his own character, exploring the relationship and natures of Natsumi and Sato, and Mukuro.............y'know let's just not talk about that blunder...

I don't even mind the brainwashing portion either because.......that's what it always was....

And I had a talk with an anon a while back about this topic. I don't mind it too much because, if you're telling me that Junko can just switch your marolaity with a few words from her silver tongue, that makes her look too overpowered and the rest of the DR2 cast indigenous and kind of already shitty people. And I know a few of them can be swayed to despair give the right circumstances(Fuyuhiko, Peko, Mahiru, Mikan, Hiyoko, Akane), but honest to god how can someone like Imposter, Nekomaru, or ray of sunshine fall to despair with her words. I think we're stretching it here...

DanganRonpa 3 may have disappointment me as well as others on a quite few number of fronts, but kept me more invested in its story and mysteries than the past two entries. Again, my personal opinion of course... Without DR3, I wouldn't be making The New Future in the first place so it has to have some merit of enjoyment in here. And I think there could be more stuff to enjoy from this anime as well, squint and tilt it a little bit and you might find a gleam of hope...

But hey, what do I know? I'm the guy that likes DanganRonpa 3 :P

#2 DanganRonpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls

Okay how do you say this name?! Ultra Despair Girls: DanganRonpa: Another Episode?! DanganRonpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls?! DanganRonpa Ultra Despair Girls: Another Episode?! DanganRonpa 1.5 Final Remix?! THREE FIVE EIGHT OVER TWO DAYS?!-Wait.

These years have shown that not much has changed in the grand scheme of this list, as it's secured second place spot has not been challenged. And that's funny because I'm pretty this game is much more divisive in the fandom as well, and it has the unfortunate perk of being more well known than the anime series. I mean, a game with no class trials, no investigations, no definite mascots, smaller cast than normal, a huge change in gameplay, and Monokuma being demoted to near Goomba status. It may be a spin-off entry, but these are some drastic changes to the formula, almost a whole new game at this point.

However, I think Ultra Despair Girls is a fantastic entry to the series, and you would do yourself a disservice by skipping out on it. Makoto Naegi's little sister, Komaru, fights through the streets of Towa City for survival against the Monokumas and the Warrior of Hope with the help of a returning face, Touko Fukawa.Right off the bat, I have to say this idea for a story is really impressive. Because this takes place after THH but before DR2, we get to see kind of the world is during the Tragedy. Hectic, apocalyptic, barely clinging onto hope.. I may not be a fan of zombie or horrors movies, but the ambience here is top notch and works extremely well.

We have a ton of colorful characters as well, the Warriors of Hope are good antagonists with heartbreaking and understanding backstories, seeing relatives or people close to the first's game cast is an excellent treat as well like Hiroko, Kanon, Yuta and Taichi even if we get a little out of those two...and of course, the main big bad, Monaca. If you read my ranking list of the series' masterminds you know full well why I like her. She is a perfect villain for this sort of story, a twisted and manipulative person with the face of the child but the heart of a demon.

Of course, I can't forget to mention Komaru and Touko. Komaru's development from an average whiny high school girl who can't do anything learns to stand up and fight for herself. And Touko, who has outgrown her shell of being reclusive and venomous to others....while still retaining that somewhat, now has an active roll of helping Komaru get through these tough times. She offers her advice, lessons, support, everything. These two's relationship make this game for me and I'm sure many others would agree with me on that front.

Okay, time to get on to the negatives here, ah......oh boy....

For starters Towa City is huge and many areas here are really cool looking, but the path is quite linear and that can be quite tedious for exploring and hiding collectibles. It's not too hard, but there are a lot of collectibles to nab, and if you miss one you have to start the chapter all over again so be mindful. One of which is the wanted list that the WOH have to hunt down other "demons" aka, THH's families and friends. You give them to Hiroko to hopefully go get them, but do you ever seeeee or meeeeet them in the Resistance base. Nope! That's a missed opportunity if I ever heard of one!

And um.......all the.....uncomfortable....things this game does....hoo boy... From Touko's fantasies, to the scoring screen at the end of chapters, to.....the Motivation machine in Chapter 3, and.....j-just how manipulative and twisted Monaca can be in chapter 4, this game proves it is not for the faint of heart. Probably not even that too, those who aren't faint of heart might reel at some of these questionable decisions here. I'd call it fanservice but because some of these scenes involve, ahem, MINORS; I'd call it fansqueezing with how much it'll squeeze and hurt you with all this psychological trauma. I suppose I've either seen worse over the course of my life to not be affected by this, or I've endured these sorts of things in the game so many times that I have become numb to it. Remember folks, I platinumed this game.

Ultra Despair Girls may make you feel despair at times, but beyond that despair, lies hope. Hope of a game with a great story, great cast of characters, and a great episode for this franchise in general.

Oh, also this...

Another point to V3 being so low. How dare they tease us…

#1....DanganRonpa 2: Goodbye Despair

"Wow, shocking! The guy that's blog is about the DanganRonpa 2 cast ha DanganRonpa 2 as his favorite! I tooootally saw this coming a mile away!" Hey look man, I don't appreciate all that sass. I saw that train coming a mile away too and I didn't say anything. Also on you're right-

*HOOOOOORRRRNNN!* *CRAASSSSH!*

Eugh....oh, oh that looks bad.....A-Anyway....

Yes, if you follow me on my main blog you probably know that I love DanganRonpa 2 a whole effin' lot! I love mah boy Hajime! I love mah girl Chiaki! I love my other boys, Fuyuhiko, Kazuichi, and Imposter! I love mah other girls, Sonia, Ibuki and Mikan! I love DanganRonpa 2!

Everything is so right here. The gameplay, the setting, the story, the characters, it's all great!

Mind Dive and Rebuttal Showdown are excellent additions that keep the mystery paces going as well utilizes other characters and their outlooks on certain things. It's almost like it's a real trial here guys. And some would say that an island doesn't really fit for a whole killing game setting, and I agree somewhat, but I love all the places of Jabberwock island and I can argue waking up and finding yourself on a deserted island far, far away from any signs of civilization works just as good too.

And the cast, the cast is perfect! A great combination of personalities coming together to make every moment feel that much more impactful and memorable. And even though I may not like afew of them(Hiyoko, Nagito, Teruteru), they evoke more of a emotional reaction out of me and stick out in my mind far more than other members of the other casts. Not to mention there are plenty of group activities and moments together that serve to boost the character's morale and hope. While again, some of them are locked behind presents, some that aren't work well enough. The party at the old building, a beach party on the second island, Ibuki's concert, there are so many ways for the characters to come together that when some of them do die, it is really sad and heart-wrenching. Like what THH was trying to do, but better!

And the main story is really good as well. Having characters we all know and love turning out to responsible for the Tragedy set up in the first game is a really nice twist, as well as learning that it may be possible to bring them back. Some say it a cheap action that miiiiiight devalue all the tragedy and lose the player and characters have went through, and again, I can see that point being made. I personally believe if you give me the option to have them back I would take it a heartbeat.

If there is one true negative I have for this game, it's that the motives are fundamentally lacking in some regard. The motives for chapters 2 and 3 are very much targeted for specific people, and don't affect the others too much, which made the motives in THH work so well is that anyone could fall into the temptation, everyone was treated equal. And with those two chapters, eehhhhhhh.....not so much....

But even still, I hold DanganRonpa 2 very near and dear to my heart. It was the first game I saw and watched from beginning to end, the first game I played and even why I bought a Vita in the first place. I would come back to this game at a moment's notice, the emotions I felt through every chapter make me want to sit by the beachside and experience it all over again...

DanganRonpa 2: Goodbye Despair is my favorite game in the entire series. I cannot express how much I love it so much...

Tsukasa's natural charm(1): How to make things turn extremely cool and exciting. ♡

I really find it cool "past" Tsukasa feels like he is "spreading a rumor" in there (which is also what present Tsukasa is doing throughout the story, but it's in a brand new fresh way in the pic above). It feels fresh to see past Tsukasa telling Nene this... and I assume she will take action according to the "rumor" past Tsukasa told her at some point, just as she does when present Tsukasa uses his radio (with sakura voicing over) to spread rumors and she happens to hear them from Aoi 'usually'.

It's reallllly cool this time he told her the "rumor" face to face, himself. Assuming what he told her in there will play a big rule in the new arc, it kinda feels as if both present and past Tsukasa are working together in this arc, and side by side, both will move the plot forward, which is again... super cool! Can't wait to see what cards present Tsukasa has at hand now. It's so so so so so interesting.

This boy is awesome! He always leaves me so excited for what to come. He always exceeds my expectations! Never a doll moment with him around! How can he be this cool?! This perfect?! This capable?! Ahhh! I swear each time I see him again, I love him more and more!

Mercy, Tsukasa! Have mercy on me! My heart can't take it anymore!

AHEM!!! So now, we have 2 rumors at play so far? How interesting.

Hmmm...

Can't wait to see how things will "play" out, this arc seems to be really exceptional. It's on a whole new level.

I have a hard time deciding but Aoi is either pisces or Taurus, she could also be a Scorpio for.....self indulgent reasons....

ah yes, Akane is 100% our Taurus, loved the idea of the the Aoi's being tauruses but Aoi is hard to decide

fuckkk I can't remember if I've mentioned this hc but ykw it's very precious to me so I will put it here in case

AKANE OWNS A DESERT SPINY LIZARD!!! he loves his lizard and takes good care of him, his name is Aoi, after his lovely Ao chan, who is in fact scared of the lizard

Natsuhiko brings soup and snacks ect to have with Mitsuba and Tsukasa (sometimes Sakura) and they just watch television together (yes there is a tv in kamome idk why but it's canon)

Natsuhiko is fearless, except when it comes to mice! he can't stand them!! so scary

Teru used to be left handed but was taught to use his right because it was traditionally still seen as devilish by the priests, so now he uses his right and can't use his left for shit, he also has the worst most ugly and uncomfortable looking hand posture when holding a pencil but he somehow knows how to force better beautiful hand posture in front of people. it's terrifies Akane every time

Teru bites his nails....sad truth, he gets very self conscious of them in public

Kou accidentally adorned Teru's biting nail habit, he tries his best not to though...

Kou is dislexic okay?!??!? it's so true.... @teruwasright was the one who brought it up awhile ago can't stop thinking of it

in early mornings Tiara likes to sit at the corner to the kitchen and listen to Kou talk to himself, it's one of the only ways she's able to know how her brother feels.

Tiara steals and plays on Kou's switch (it's fine because Kou isn't much of a gamer) and loves to run around and catch Pokemon so her brothers got her let's go!Eevee (they had to fight over which one she would like Kou said Pikachu and Teru said Eevee) and she can't stop playing with them! she nearly cries everytime a Pokemon faints so Teru battles for her (and secretly plays some for her character to go farther also he's a game addict) her favorite type is Fairy!

Sakura barely gives a shit whether her skirts flair up in the wind but she does make sure they don't just to be modest, also it comes naturally for nature to never ruin her hair or clothes idk...

Amane used to feed a stray cat and thought of the cat as his only other company, the cat went missing though

WAHHHH THESE ARE LOVELY i love the broadcasting club one i feel like someone would bring in a gaming console or something too and theyd watch tv and play video games together

AND the one where kou talks to himself and tiara listens i love that so much it works so well

hello there!!! thank you this is very sweet and made my afternoon 🫶 and excellent question! newest chapter DEFINITELY brings up that issue (and, post writing the answer, it got long — below the cut for that reason, though there’s no spoilers if you happen to care!)

in-universe, the recognizability of the gods depends on who they are and their relevance to broader (japanese) society. i make that distinction because the mythos ive adopted for pointy objects is more or less geolocked to japan: japanese gods, most widely celebrated and revered in japan, with a few exceptions.

first is the example of sakura and aoi; they (alongside angie, their daughter) live on — or in aoi’s case because of junko, in the oceans surrounding — a small polynesian island where the two of them are known to the population to be goddesses, and are revered as such. so there are instances where the gods are recognizable to mortals; though in a more modern day and age, most gods prefer not to have that kind of attention on themselves. another similar example would be sonia; she’s ruled novoselic for milennia, and it’s sort of an open secret amongst the population of her country, one that doesn’t really bleed out into the rest of the world as she has, in recent centuries, made efforts to obscure her continued role at the helm of the country.

but, speaking more specifically to japan: there’s a cultural understanding of the gods (especially the most powerful/Big Five gods) but the average citizen isn’t particularly likely to see, say, hajime in the wild, and immediately be like “wow i guess the gods are real!”

since i brought hajime up specifically in the chapter, i’ll use him to opine a little more. Big Five god, God of Hope, big ol’ powerhouse hajime hinata has his own statues, his own distinct cultural awareness, the whole shebang! but he’s also a pretty average guy all-around. even bearing the name of a Big Five god, even looking pretty similar to the depictions of him that exist, the assumption to the average person isn’t going to be that he’s a god. if anything, people will just think his parents were huge mythology buffs and just named him after the god. and because he’s so “average” looking, even when he’s literally teaching a mythology class where his name absolutely comes up, people more or less…glaze past the similarities, y’know? sort of if you saw, like, zeus or something running around. big white beard, lightning bolts, etcetera etcetera — the first thought you as a regular human has probably isn’t gonna be “the gods are real and thats zeus right in front of me!”

Some of my own Danganronpa non-despair AU headcanons/imagines this time! (THH edition)

I was inspired, so I decided why not write down some headcanons/imagines/character adjustments for my Danganronpa non-despair AU! I’m gonna be doing this as a series, starting with the THH characters, then the SDR2 characters, then the V3 characters (although I will mention characters from other games in my headcanons). Enjoy!

Makoto Naegi | 苗木誠

He’d definitely lend a listening ear to whoever wanted to vent to him.

When he first comes to Hope’s Peak, he’s such a fanboy over everyone

He has an inferiority complex and self worth issues because he’s surrounded by insanely talented students, but Sayaka and Kyoko quickly help him get over that

He’s pretty good at keyboard, and plays alongside Sayaka a lot

He actually got noticed by Kaede, who offered to teach him, which obviously he was ecstatic about

He’s the only one in Class 78th, and possibly all of Hope’s Peak, who is neurotypical

Sayaka Maizono | 舞園さやか

Her and Makoto are basically best friends

She’s still a total cinnamon roll, but she loves to play little pranks on the rest of Class 78th and have a good laugh over it

She, Ibuki, Leon and Kaede tried to form a music group together but they fell apart really quickly due to their different styles

She has a huge crush on Makoto, but she’s afraid to admit it

Leon Kuwata | 桑田怜恩

He’s almost always the only one in class, just so he can avoid playing baseball

Ibuki taught him guitar and he’s been playing nonstop ever since

He *tries* to get along with Sayaka, but prefers hanging out with Ibuki since they almost always end up playing together

Everyone in Class 78 calls him the Ultimate Guitarist because... reasons

Toko Fukawa | 腐川冬子

She doesn’t have the weird thing for Byakuya in this au

She doesn’t slut shame the girls either

She’s still really shy tho

She initially dislikes Hifumi for writing fanfic, but they eventually bond over their mutual love for writing

She’s also close with Tsumugi, and the two of them collaborated to write a book that was loosely based on Tsumugi’s favorite anime

Genocider Syo is friends with Sonia, but she’s a bit put off by Sonia’s obsession with her and other serial killers

Kiyotaka Ishimaru | 石丸清多夏

Initially, the rest of the class shys away from him because he has a stick up his ass about the rules, but Mondo and Chihiro quickly befriend him

After a while, he loosens up a bit, but he never stops being the Ultimate Moral Compass

He tries to bond with the class by telling jokes, but he’s always super awkward with it and is usually unsuccessful

He’s SUPER gullible — he’ll believe anything anyone tells him, and you better believe Class 78 uses that to their advantage

Once, he dyed his hair white on a dare, and ended up liking it and kept it that way

He also tries to do impressions of his classmates (mostly Mondo) but, again, is painfully bad at it

Everyone actually finds these funny tho

Mondo Oowada | 大和田紋土

He, surprisingly, likes to play card games, which everyone was shocked to find out

Except Celeste, who is fascinated by his interest

He’s very protective of his friends, and will do anything for them

Especially Taka and Chihiro, his two best friends

He’s an amazing hairstylist, and secretly loves to play with and style people’s hair

Everyone in all of Hope’s peak knows to go to him for hair care tips and tricks

He also taught Chihiro how to ride a motorcycle the two of them rode around together a lot, until Taka ratted them out

He still hasn’t forgiven Taka for that

Chihiro Fujisaki | 不二咲千尋

In this au, he’s a bit more open about his gender, but still has loads of insecurities

At first, he’s completely in the closet, but after rumors spread online about him being a boy, he decides to live as himself and goes to Mondo for help

Mondo became his first real friend to him because of this, and him (and eventually Sakura too) helped him become strong

Eventually, he became an honorary member of Mondo’s gang and would often hang out with them in his free time

His hidden talent is being a voice actor, but he’s super embarrassed to talk about it since he’s the Ultimate Programmer

His first voice role was in a video game he developed himself, which led some talent scouts to notice him

He eventually voiced in several anime and video games, some of which he also helped develop

He’s almost as passionate about acting as he is about programming, but the only people he feels comfortable talking about it to are Hifumi and Tsumugi, who both become huge fans of his, and Mondo and Taka

When he found out Junko had created Monokuma, he was fascinated and offered to help her with ironing out all his kinks

He, Chiaki, Mukuro and Miu also created the Exisals in this au, for the sole reason of fooling around

Although, Chihiro himself was a bit intimidated by his creation at first, but after Tsumugi and Junko pressured him to try one out for himself, he fell in love

Yasuhiro Hagakure | 葉隠康比呂

He’s less of a dumbass in this AU, although he still has a tendency to get himself in sticky situations

Celeste and Hifumi played a prank on him by getting him to dress up in the Robo Justice suit and go around scaring people, but it backfired after Hiro fell down the stairs and broke his leg

Being the only one in the class who can, he often buys wine for Celeste and Mondo (and whoever asks, but only those two ever do)

He and Mondo use the same hair gel, so sometimes he’d take Mondo’s without knowing, which would lead to some awkward misunderstandings

Interestingly, he once predicted the world would end and they’d all end up dead, but that never ended up happening

That’s where the “30% accurate” thing came from— before that he was almost always right

He constantly makes jokes about being an old man (even though he’s only in his early twenties)

Hifumi Yamada | 山田一二三

He’s no longer solely attracted to anime characters, but he still loves them very much

He’s also nicer in this au

He’s besties with Tsumugi, and they bond over their love of anime and fiction

He’s also a huge fan of Chihiro’s, after he found out Chihiro was on the development team for his favorite game AND voiced two of his favorite anime characters

Low key has a crush on Celeste

Angie constantly makes jokes about how his first name is just “one two three” in Japanese

Whenever he’s watching an anime Chihiro was in, he’ll hound him with questions about what it was like recording, which Chihiro doesn’t mind because he doesn’t get to talk about his voice work a lot

Someday he wants to write and direct his own anime, and Tsumugi and Toko give him a lot of writing tips

She doesn’t actually know how to do her own hair, so she has to get Mondo to do it for her

Sakura Oogami | 大神さくら

She and Tenko become friends SO QUICKLY because of their shared passion for martial arts

She’s still friends with Aoi tho

The three of them hang out together a lot

She and Tenko developed a new form of martial arts combining Neo-Aikido and Sakura’s own style, which they named the Oogami Method

Junko bullied her because of her ripped uniform, but after she explained that nothing would fit her, Junko offered to have one made for her

Kyoko Kirigiri | 霧切響子

She and Shuichi are very close, obviously

She gives Shuichi a lot of pointers on improving his investigative skills, and they work together often to solve cases

She and Makoto still become close, but their friendship is overshadowed by her and Shuichi’s

She notices this after a while, and makes a concerted effort to spend more time with Makoto

She’s less distant in this AU, but she still tries not to show her emotions

Her hair is naturally black in this AU, she dyed it purple after she lost a bet (with Celeste)

Aoi Asahina | 朝日奈葵

In this AU, she doesn’t just love donuts, but she loves all sweets

She was a fan of Junko’s before coming to Hope’s Peak, and the two of them became friends quickly

She and Akane are also close, and everyone jokes that they’re sisters, though in reality they aren’t

She once got recruited by Kaito to be in a play his class was putting on, but she’s such a terrible actor that they gave her part to Junko

She once walked in on Junko and Mukuro testing out Monokuma for the first time, and they were super freaked out, but Aoi was fascinated and wanted to try controlling him

Mukuro was against it, but Junko was cool with it, so she got to in the end

Byakuya Togami | 十神白夜

He and Makoto are both obsessed with true crime, and the two of them actually become friends because of that

They both love digging into Hope’s Peak’s files and his family’s files to find mysteries they could try and solve

Sonia joins them a lot too

He unofficially became the class’s French teacher after they found out he was fluent

He’s nicer in this au, and he’s kind of the dad of the class

When the Imposter was impersonating him, the two of them got into a little mini-war over who was the superior Togami (Twogami surprisingly won that war, albeit barely)

Mukuro Ikusaba | 戦刃むくろ

She’s away from Hope’s Peak A LOT, usually doing soldier things

When she is at Hope’s Peak, she spends most of her time either developing new weapons or looking after Junko

She’s usually the one who has to clean up after Junko’s shenanigans, even though she partakes in them herself

She helps Junko with a lot of her projects, but usually she ends up working on her own things while Junko does her thing

Despite this, she loves working with her sister when she gets the chance

Her proudest achievement is the Exisals, even though she collaborated with Chihiro, Chiaki and Miu to create them

Junko Enoshima | 江ノ島盾子

While she’s obviously not Ultimate Despair in this au, she’s still very chaotic and loves causing shenanigans and playing (mostly) harmless pranks

She’s friends with Sayaka and Kokichi because of this (both she and Sayaka are members of D.I.C.E. too)

She still puts on different personas, but she does it as a joke

She’s actually a very good actress, and she loves to act, but just like Chihiro, that gets overshadowed by her Ultimate talent

She loves to build and create things, just like her sister, which is why she created Monokuma

She uses Monokuma for her pranks a lot

Sometimes she goes through severe depressive episodes where she doesn’t have the energy to leave her home, but she usually uses Monokuma as a sort of telepresence unit so she can still talk to her friends

At first, no one knew that Monokuma was her, but Aoi ended up spilling the beans

She also learned animation from Ryota, and wants to make an anime starring her, Kaito, Tsumugi, Chihiro, Mukuro and Hajime

She loves to share her projects with her friends, and often lets other people control Monokuma or model for her

She gets hurt a LOT, and usually Mikan has to care for her

Her proudest achievement is replacing the Exisals’ weapons with water guns (even though Mukuro did most of the work)

They actually decided to leave them like that afterwards, since the Exisals were only ever used by her friends to mess around in

She suffers from PTSD, and part of that is recurring nightmares that the world ended and all her friends were forced to kill each other

Makoto Naegi: Rung ~ Rung is often forgotten about and passed over, as he’s perfectly unassuming and normal – except for his luck and penchant for making connections with all sorts of people. He’s our protagonist!

Kyoko Kirigiri: Nightbeat ~ Nightbeat is a mysterious character who’s lost his memories but seems to be figuring out the secrets of this strange place much faster than anyone else! He’s also taken a liking to Rung...

Aoi Asahina: Tailgate ~ Tailgate is a bubbly swimmer who tries to see the positive side of things and can definitely beat you up. He’s “best friends” with Cyclonus and will especially beat you up if you insult him!

Sakura Oogami: Cyclonus ~ Cyclonus is a strong, silent warrior who comes off as intimidating but really cares deeply for all of his friends, Tailgate especially. He’s pretty protective, but often shifts the blame onto himself instead of others.

Kiyotaka Ishimaru: Minimus Ambus ~ Minimus is stiff, uncompromising, and follows the rules like his life depends on it. He believes hard work and discipline is the only way to achieve one’s dreams, but despite his aggressive demeanor he’s really quite emotional (and kind of lonely).

Mondo Oowada: Megatron ~ Megatron is a notorious troublemaker and the head of the Decepticons, the biggest gang in Kaon. He’s based his whole life around strength—but he has much more depth beyond that, and harbors dreams of being a poet one day.

Leon Kuwata: Flamewar ~ Flamewar is fiery in every way; looks, personality, skill, and temper! She’s an ace baseball player but resents her talent—she’d rather be a punk rock singer than toss stupid balls around all day.

Sayaka Maizono: Rosanna ~ Everybody knows Rosanna, the most popular singer in Cybertron! Rosanna is cute and friendly—but she sacrificed a lot to reach her dreams, and is willing to do much more than that in order to hold onto them.

Yasuhiro Hagakure: Riptide ~ Riptide, despite having a boat alt mode, is not the ultimate swimmer. He’s pretty ditzy and he knows that, but he doesn’t let it get him down, and prides his friendships more than anything.

Celestia Ludenberg: Getimus Prime (Getaway) ~ Getaway is a master manipulator who only wants one thing: to be extraordinary. Going by Getimus Prime (despite not being a Prime at all), Getaway excels at games of chance and cannot stand being looked over.

Hifumi Yamada: First Aid ~ First Aid is a little shy and unsure at times, but get him going about the Wreckers and he won’t stop until you know everything about Springer. He’s also a great medic, but sadly his skills don’t come up too often.

Chihiro Fujisaki: Glyph ~ Glyph is a fantastically skilled programmer and language expert who is used to being a wallflower most of the time, so when she’s thrust into the spotlight she doesn’t know what to do with herself. She’s very smart, but struggles with her self-esteem.

Byakuya Togami: Froid ~ Froid is an asshole given a step up in life who acts like it makes him smarter than anyone else. He loves putting down everyone around him, especially Rung, but often leans on him when he doesn’t actually have the answer. God, what a prick.

Toko Fukawa: Arcee ~ Arcee is a cold and prickly writer who will take no shit from anyone. Spend some time with her, however, and she opens up gradually. Also, she has killed before and will kill again. A truly powerful lesbian.

Mukuro Ikusaba: Soundwave ~ Soundwave, the sixteenth student hiding somewhere within the school, is a ruthless and efficient soldier—and also great at impressions, since he can play clips of someone’s voice and no one can ever tell it’s not him speaking under the mask.

Junko Enoshima: Overlord ~ Overlord enjoys suffering for suffering’s sake. He’ll gladly murder, but why should he do it himself if he can force others into doing it for him? He adores seeing former friends tear each other apart—and he’ll be weird about it, too.

It was prom night at Hope’s Peak Academy--the first of its kind, in fact, and the staff aimed to make it an annual event.

What better way to celebrate Class 78′s accomplishments this year than to host a fun event full of dancing, food, and music?

The night had just begun, and everyone was already having a good time. They dressed formally and talked among themselves, ate some of the food at the tables, or danced with each other.

You, on the other hand, just sat at one of the tables alone, sipping your drink as you observed everything that was going on:

Leon was dressed in a white tux, looking like a helpless romantic as he tried getting one of the girls to dance with him--only to pout and shuffle away at their rejections.

Toko was following Byakuya around, as usual. She shot you a dirty look when you were staring, so you smiled and politely waved to her, turning your attention to the food table..

Where Aoi was hogging all the sweets while Sakura, who wore a cute dress, smiled and shook her head as she helped herself to some snacks, too.

Even now, it still fascinated you that...all these people came from different backgrounds, with different talents and ambitions.

And yet, this prom made you all feel less like Ultimates and more like normal highschoolers who loved to party.

I have never been the type to try and grab the spotlight We were at a revel with some rebels on a hot night Laughin' at my sister as she's dazzling the room Then you walked in and my heart went "Boom!"

“Oh! [Y/n]! There you are! How are you?”

Glancing over, you noticed Sayaka rush over to you, taking the seat next to you. She had this nervous, intense look as she leaned closer to you. Her eyes went to Leon, who was now sulking at the bleachers.

“I guess he’s been on your tail all night?” You chuckled.

“Y-Yeah..” She sat upright, now calm as she smiled. “I feel bad for rejecting him but...singing’s more my strong suit, y’know?”

The pop idol became like a sister to you--you two stuck together like glue, always looking out for each other and being the “optimists” of the class.

You blinked as you saw the gym doors being thrown open, before seeing two of your classmates rush in: Taka, who looked pale and sweaty, and Mondo, who was just grinning as he patted the prefect’s back.

‘Guess they showed up here together.’ You thought, but when Taka’s eyes went to meet yours from across the gym, you quickly looked away, flustered...for some reason.

What’s gotten into you?

Your heart was already skipping beats just from looking at him.

Of course..it didn’t help you had a slight crush on the handsome black-haired male.

Tryin' to catch your eye from the side of the ballroom Everybody's dancin' and the band's top volume Grind to the rhythm as we wine and dine Grab my sister, and whisper "Yo, this one's mine." (Oooh)

“Oooooh, I see someone has a crush~!”

“Wha..” You stared back at Sayaka, jaw dropping. “H-How did you come to that conclusion?!”

“Oh, it’s just my intuition.” She smiled innocently. “But actually..it’s been painfully obvious to everyone here.”

“E-Everyone?!”

“Well, except for him, of course. Though now that he’s here...this is your chance!”

“Chance to...?”“

“Ask him to dance with you, silly!” Sayaka huffed as she gestured to the colorful dance floor. “What do you have to lose?”

“My dignity...” You mumbled, shaking your head. “There’s no way I could ever do that. He’s probably only here to enforce the rules..”

“Hm, I guess I can always ask him for you!”

“Wait hold on-”

But it was too late, as the pop idol jumped out of her seat and quickly rushed to the other side of the gym despite your protests. Though she waited until the two late comers were alone to talk to the Ultimate Moral Compass.

My sister made her way across the room to you (Oooh) And I got nervous, thinking "What's she gonna do?" (Oooh) She grabs you by the arm, I'm thinkin' "I'm through" (Oooh) Then you look back at me and suddenly I'm-

You just sat there awkwardly, feeling nervous and embarrassed. ‘C’mon..why couldn’t I have just talked to him? Maybe he’ll say no..’

Even though part of you didn’t want that, you just sighed and decided to distract yourself by getting another drink. Though as you did, your eyes glanced back to Sayaka, who was holding Taka’s arm as he leaned down to hear what she was whispering.

All while she gestured to you.

‘Welp, I’m through..this is where I die..’

As your face heated up, you looked elsewhere--noticing Junko and Mukuro in the corner. They were chatting with each other, but they were apparently having a sparring match, too, that resulted in their dresses being torn up.

You’d rather deal with them than the potential humiliation of-

“Oh! [Y/n]! I heard you were in need of a dance partner?”

Taka’s booming voice startled you a bit, being loud and clear over the music, and you turned around to see him standing in front of you with a bright smile. He had his usual white trousers and black boots, though he wore a white suit with a simple red bowtie that matched his stunning eyes well-

Wait..did your brain really call them “stunning”??

Welp, they certainly captivated you.

"U-Uh..yeah!” You managed to squeak out.

Helpless! Look into your eyes (Oh, look at those eyes) And the sky's the limit (Oh!) I'm helpless (I know) Down for the count And I'm drownin' in 'em

With a laugh he took your hand, bringing you towards the still-vacant dance floor. “I see this as an excellent learning opportunity! Considering I’ve never really..learned how to dance myself,” he admitted, cheeks growing flushed. “B-But I know you’d be great! So teach me all that you know!”

You were equally as flustered. “There’s no way to explain how to dance. Just...follow my footsteps and the music, and..that’s all there is to it.”

“Huh..it’s that simple? Well, I shall give it my all!” He proudly declared.

Your smile only grew. Taka’s enthusiasm was so contagious, despite his usual strictness during normal school hours.

But you could see he was trying to loosen up and have a bit of fun.

So you were more than happy to show him how to dance--as it allowed you to get lost in his eyes for as long as the songs played.

Of course, you did stumble a bit..and so did he, which made you both embarrassed.

Though it was still an enjoyable moment you’d never forget.

‘I definitely owe Sayaka big time.’
