read through your answer to an ask about alastor's touch aversion and as someone who is in the process of getting diagnosed with ASD it is SO VALIDATING. being totally cool and normal with touch one second and then being absolutely appalled by it a moment later. what also shines through about his characterization in this context is the slow acceptance towards the ordeal of Using Your Words when you want/no longer want to be touched. unfortunately vox cant read your mind bud

i dont know if you've mentioned this anywhere but do you see alastor (or your version of him) as an autistic character? since that flavor of touch aversion, though not exclusive to asd, is definitely a common experience

Ahhh, I'm glad that it rings so true! Yeah, it's just one of those things that I think is really malleable and depends on the circumstance! Even for folks that aren't touch-averse, specifically, there's still variety in the people and circumstances involved with being accepting of touch - and being generally touch-averse just adds layers and levels to the experience. Thank you!

As for Alastor potentially being autistic in how I write him... two aspects to that answer:

With the singular exception of Lucifer (or any other character who has an existing, canon diagnosis) I don't tend to have specific diagnoses in mind ahead of time for characters when I write them. A lot of them end up very obviously anxious, or ADHD, or autistic, or most commonly C-PTSD, etc, but it's kind of an "I write this character how I see them and you can definitely accurately infer" situation! You're not the first person to see that in how I write him, so probably the answer is 'yes'!

That said, I've been told by pretty reliable peer review that I have a touch of the 'tism to the point that it's a running joke, so there's a good chance that's also leaking in, HAH.

Paperwork

Inspired by this old post.

Upon formation of the team, Cassie, Jacqui, Takeda and Jin are given paperwork to fill out. Said paperwork contains the dreaded “Emergency Contacts” section. Special Forces needed next of kin to notify in case anyone was incapacitated, and—if killed—someone to deliver the remains to.

Jin considers telling Secretary Blake, to only notify his family if he’s dead. At least he wouldn’t be alive to deal with their bullshit. No way in hell, would he stay under their watch injured (and have them bitch about his life choices). He considers adding Takeda’s information and calling it a day. And then he decides, that burden shouldn’t be placed on the ninja. He ends up writing a note to contact the Shaolin, should anything happen.

Some time after Shinnok’s attempted takeover of Earthrealm, Cassie’s team is on another mission. Reaching the extraction point proves more difficult than anticipated. Jin decides to put himself in harms way, so the rest of his team can escape.

His comrades refuse to leave him behind. They’re able to get to their injured teammate and drag him to extraction. Keeping pressure on his wounds until medical staff can look at him.

Jin regains consciousness at the hospital. Saying the monk is shocked, would be an understatement. Were they really so overjoyed to see him alive? Even General Blade drops by to check on him.

When Johnny comes to visit, the monk expects a stern lecture about his actions. The redness in his mentor’s eyes catches him off guard. It’s obvious he’s been crying. Instead of a lecture, Johnny squeezes his shoulder and asks, “How’re you holding up?”

Jin plans to recover at the Shaolin Temple when discharged. The actor has another idea and insists his word is final. Cassie’s team ends up at the Cage family vacation home. Johnny admits he wanted to surprise them. A reward for the string of successful missions.

Cut to a small house, surrounded by a wooden deck. It sits on a hill overlooking the beach. The cloudy sky is tinted with pink and orange hues. The deck leads to a screened in living room. Kung Jin is sitting on the couch. His friends converse in the kitchen; it makes for pleasant background noise. Observing the sunset, he comes to a realization. He’s found people that don’t force him to walk on eggshells. For the first time in years.

i used to joke a lot about boarding school being like prison when i was there but no one ever understood the weight of my statement. if you do any research into inmate dynamics and prison social life, you’ll start to see the parallels, which kind of makes sense because boarding schools were first established as penal institutions as well. in terms of how students relate to each other in the context of social and material deprivation (especially since i was on campus during the tail end of the last serious covid wave), it’s quite similar to the way inmates also interact with each other. at least at my boarding school we had the illicit economy of drugs, room theft (like cell theft), and gangs of stupid rich kids that liked to push around the rest of us. there was this total lack of privacy because our doors didn’t have locks either, if you piss off the wrong person they storm into your room and threaten you etc. etc. not to mention all the creative ways they managed to smuggle in weed or even cocaine. my research in forensic psychology and prison sociology has done nothing but confirm my own fears that i may never recover from everything that happened to me in boarding school, because it’s scarring in its own way. anyways yeah, the plus side is nothing really rattles me anymore though the downside is i am going to be permanently fatigued the rest of my life.

its almost definitely the autism in me, but oh my god if theres one thing i hate its when people misunderstand characters or situations in media. i don’t know what it is but it just angers me to no end.

i don’t expect everyone to be a huge psychology nerd like me, or to even be interested in seeing all possible sides to a situation. but its just…you really cannot make an informed decision, or even have an opinion on certain things without the right information. humans are multi-facted, and if you’re dealing with actual complex media that showcases this, you need to make sure you fully understand something (or someone) to have a valid take.

maybe im too critical, but honestly imo this goes for real life as well.

i mean it’s perfectly fine to have a negative opinion on anything, feelings are valid regardless of what caused them. but jesus christ. isn’t it better to know all of the facts first? even if it doesn’t change your opinion?

I have to say, I now crave the way you write unreliable narrators - where the reader doesn't know that the narrator is unreliable until its hitting them in face. Every limited narrator is unreliable (when done well) by virtue of them being a person, but its quite a treat to have a character gaslight themselves so hard they genuinely seem honest in their reasonings. Your way of getting into a characters head and viewing the world from their perspective is very apparent throughout your fics. I recently re-read your old atla and hawks-centric fics, and you have such a unique and recognizable flavor to your writing :)

Thank you so much! It is, firstly, an absolute delight to me that people are still dipping back and reading (rereading!!) things of mine that are a few years old now.

Secondly, I think the biggest part of writing an unreliable narrator is that, like... most people, no matter who they are or what they're doing, are generally convinced that they're doing the right thing on some level. Almost nobody is sitting there going, "I'm going to make a series of bad choices on purpose!" even if the choices are clearly awful from the outside. The way you describe my writing, where as a reader you're not quite hit in the face with what's been spiraling on until the character is - that's so lovely for me to hear, because that means I'm doing a good job convincingly writing that "I'm behaving in a way that makes sense to me" mindset!

Which is my favorite thing to do in writing, hahaha. Even in my fantroll RP days, all of my OCs were designed Like That (TM).

I was so damn stressed about this test. My Adhd meds wore off mid test and I wasn't able to finish the second half of the test (I had to leave one of the frqs blank because i didnt have time). It felt so icky because Biology and related sciences are kinda my special interest but apparently I was panicked for no reason because I still (somehow) got the 5!!!!

How did you learn embroidery?

taught myself! looked up some guides online on how to cross stitch when i was 14, and then checked out some books from the library to learn how to do surface embroidery. mostly learned through practicing and figuring out what works and what doesn't!
