Speaks about sexuality openly on Kyoshi Island but knows to be more careful around outsiders.

Water Tribe:

More “traditional” than the other nations so it’s a bit more subtle and reliant on accompanying eyebrow movements, hand gestures, and tone of voice.

“She’s shown some interest in ice fishing.” (sapphic)

“I personally prefer to fish in the same waters as Avatar Kuruk.” (bi)

Even before the hundred year war they were one of the more intolerant of the nations (based on the Kyoshi novels) and they probably only got worse during the hundred year war. I’m sure they would’ve come up with more slang by the time we get to Korra’s time but I’m out of ideas for the Fire Nation.

Air Nomads:

As they are totally open and accepting to all genders and sexualities they wouldn’t feel the need for coming up with specific labels, let alone weird secret codes and slang. When nomads begin exploring the world and start to learn about the other nation’s ideologies and slang and everything they’re always confused but respects the other nation’s traditions and cultures.

Even more open about gender and sexuality than Kyoshi Islanders. They’re super casual and blunt about it without being disrespectful but also not trying to be respectful because why would anyone be disrespectful about this? There’s a polycule consisting of roughly ten people who all connected through an asexual tribe member that each member of the polycule has a qpr with. Darryl over there is interested in folks of all sorts. His spouse is all the genders. Not to be confused with Jim over there who is none of the genders. Not to be confused with Junjun who is the third gender… (etc)

I didn’t do a big deep dive into each nation’s culture and history. This is just from the top of my head and is just for fun. Let me know if you guys have any other ideas!

you had been at the bau for approximately two years before you realized the team had a giant secret they hadn’t told you yet. 

to be fair, you had joined the team right after emily’s departure, however, no one had ever gone into details on what that entailed. considering how fresh it had been when you arrived, you didn’t blame them one bit. you had expected them to be less… nonchalant when they told you what had happened, especially as garcia flung herself into emily’s arms for what appeared to be the first time in forever. that was four years ago. it was now your sixth year with the bau, and approaching your first full year dating the brunette in question.

you had always gotten lesbian vibes from her, but didn’t want to make a move in case you were wrong. jj was the one to push you to ask her out. you could never thank the blonde enough, especially considering you now had ties to dc that would never let you leave. in the past eleven months, emily had made sure to make all the time in the world for you when you were off the clock. she was absolutely amazing at separating work emily and home emily, and you fell more in love with her every passing moment. she always made sure your favorite perfumes were full, or that the sweater you liked to wear around the apartment was always laying on the couch when you got home from cases. it never went unnoticed how she was always there for you and the team. 

that was probably how you found yourself hosting another girls night, with the girls of the bau and jj’s new girlfriend, elle. they explained to you how they used to work together and how jj was there for her after everything happened with the fisher king way back when. it took them a while to realize jj was bi, but when they did they slipped into what it was they had now. you liked elle. she was good for jj. and as a bonus, she got along well with emily as well. it was quite funny how fast they had clicked, considering they both had very standoffish moods when you first meet them. jj joked at one point that they had been stolen from you two, but it was all fun and games considering both girls loved you endlessly. your apartment had become the top hangout spot for girls nights, considering you two had gotten yourself a hot tub after a particularly hard case that caused you to blow your knee out. many a nights were spent in the hot tub, bottles of wine split between the five of you and sometimes edibles if you were feeling adventurous. garcia had been the one to bring up the idea, and frankly you all didn’t have the heart to tell her no. as long as you all didn’t do it too frequently, it was fine. 

the night drew on and the third bottle of wine had been opened, the group shifting to sitting in the living room after three boxes of pizza were split between everyone. a random chick flick was on in the background as everyone laid around, laughing as jabs were exchanged. you had curled up into emily’s side on the loveseat, the two of you sharing your favorite blanket that had been crocheted for you by your mother. it was a beautiful gray to black ombre, with little hints of yellow scattered throughout to symbolize stars. emily had claimed it pretty quickly after you moved in with her, and it had turned into the blanket you two typically used at home when watching movies or sitting in the living room scrolling through facebook. the one rule for this blanket was that it didn’t leave the apartment- you two couldn’t risk anything happening to it. 

“listen,” elle chuckled, jolting you out of your thoughts. “all i’m saying is i would have beat everyone’s asses so hard at beer pong.”

Strahd is a bisexual king right out of the book, which is awesome.

Rahadin is asexual, but not in like, an ace kind of way. Like in a single-celled organism kind of way.

Ireena is aroace! A decision partly inspired by a certain pool of water (iykyk), and also because she’s a little bit my self-insert. A PC hit on her in like session four and was immediately told, “Do not ever speak to me that way again.” She’s iconic and I adore her.

IZMARK. IZ. GAY. And madly in love with the druid. Unfortunately Izmark does not know he is gay. He believes it is very normal to lovingly stare into your homie's eyes and look down at his lips and imagine what it would be like to kiss him. And it is very normal to comment on how attractive your homie is, cause that's just what bros do.

Vollenta is a beautiful lesbian who refuses to let the fact that she is married to Strahd change the fact that she is a lesbian and nobody will tell her or her pile of bodies otherwise.

Ludmilla is on the ace spectrum. I mean, come on. She's with the guy for power and grant money. She says she loves him, and they're definitely intimate, but she's the kind of girly to take notes before during and after, you know?

Escher. What even needs to be said about Escher. He's Ravenloft's resident twink and proud of it. He's a little lonely and can't stop thinking about the boy he was in love with when he was young, who is now old and grizzled from age, while Escher himself remains the same age he was when he betrayed his lover and chose Strahd instead, but like... he's also pretty and immortal, so who cares?

Ezmerelda is a trans lesbian! She's gorgeous and I adore her. She's just so confident that she can kill Strahd on her own and I think she's right for that. I knew I wanted her to be a love interest for one of my PCs, and it just so happens that the player in question has a type.

Danika is also bi, and she's very happily married to her wonderful little husband. This hasn't come up in the campaign at all it's just something I know to be true in my heart.

The Abbot: Gender! Fluid! Call them whatever you want. He/him when you want to play on ideas of masculinity in religious circles, they/them when you want to make them seem undefinable, she/her when you want your PCs to reflect on how much mom trauma they all have :)

Lease Bound is still going - now with bonus sexual assault.

I haven't talked much about Lease Bound here, apart from a post focusing on Blaire Hopburn and one reblog. But the latest page update left me so shocked, so disturbed, that I had to say something about it.

Quick bit of context: It's Chapter 13, and we're back at Yonique, the lesbian bar where bouncer Jaden had that infamous encounter with three trans women. Tonight is Ballroom Night, where both single women and women in relationships can learn to partner dance. But there's an odd number of people, so Jaden is pulled off door duty and enlisted to take part by her fellow bouncers Parniya and Shez:

Jaden: You can't just call "shotty not" before one party is even present! I wasn't even working on that day! Parniya: (hates dancing) Our mistake. We'll take note for next time. Jaden: B-But I'm wearing shorts, so I'm the most under-dressed! Shez: (hates wearing sleeves) That's no worries. Ari's gotcha there! Parniya and Shez: (tossing Jaden into Ari's arms) GOOD LUCK!

Already we've got Jaden being forced to do something against her will. But it gets worse.

Jaden is pulled up on stage in front of the guests and other Yonique staff. Ari, the club's DJ and social media manager, does a quick little magic trick and produces a screen.

And then this happens.

Ari: For my next trick: I'm gonna turn this dweeby bouncer... (moves behind the screen) ...Into a dreamboat! (Ari removes Jaden's t-shirt, shorts and shoes, which fly into the air, along with the chair Jaden had been sitting on) Jaden: HEY! W-WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! (Additional items of clothing fly into the audience) Jaden: ACK! Where are you getting all those clothes?! Ari: Oooh! This one is perfect...!

Ari is giving Jaden a new outfit for Ballroom Night. Before she does that, though, Ari suddenly and without warning removes Jaden's clothes. In front of an audience. Behind a screen, yes, but still very publicly (you can even still see their silhouettes through the screen).

This is sexual assault.

That's not hyperbole. This Australian website explains that "being exposed to sexual behaviour without your consent, such as forcing someone to take their clothes off" (emphasis mine) counts as sexual assault.

Now, technically Ari is taking Jaden's clothes off for her, rather than making Jaden take them off herself, but it's the same principle, isn't it?

And what makes it even worse is that ... I don't think Jaden even wears a bra.

Because in Chapter 10, in a flashback to a make-out scene, her then-girlfriend Alexis cups Jaden's breast, and there's no indication that Jaden had needed to take a bra off first - implying that she doesn't always wear a bra.

What if she happened to not be wearing a bra on Ballroom Night? What if her breasts got exposed to Ari when Ari stripped her of her t-shirt? Wouldn't that be humiliating and degrading?

And Ari is a character we're supposed to like! She's a lesbian working for Yonique, and the Yonique staff are supposed to be the good guys! (Or good gyns, I guess?) The author clearly wants her audience to like these lesbians and bi women more than the trans and enby characters. And yet she has one of her lesbians sexually assault another?!

Compare this to the QT Collective (the LGBTQIA+ university club that Blaire is part of). The worst thing the trans men and enbies do is speculate on Jaden's gender identity based on one photo and a few comments from Blaire, who's only just met her. Prying into the gender identity of a real person, a stranger, is pretty iffy. But it's nowhere near as bad as forcibly taking someone's clothes off.

Not even the trans women in Chapter 3 do anything like this! True, Ginger threatens to assault Jaden, but Jaden is able to stop Ginger before that happens. She's in Bouncer Mode, and prepared to defend herself.

Here, though, not only has she been thrust into a situation she never agreed to be in, but she's been stripped of her clothes by a coworker in front of an audience.

Actually, this isn't the first time Jaden has been in these awkward situations. In Chapter 12, Shez brings Jaden in to assist with her self-defence class, without telling Jaden that's what she's doing, prompting Jaden to think, "What the hell have I gotten myself into...?"

And earlier in Chapter 3, a trio of women flirt with Jaden and try to draw her away from her post. They get pretty touchy, leaning against her. At the time, one could brush it off as a comedy moment, with Jaden being portrayed as a heartthrob who doesn't realise how handsome she is to others, but now it hits different.

But even after everything that had happened with the comic so far, I didn't expect this. At best, it's a comic makeover moment that falls flat. (The Cast Page does say Ari has a "juvenile sense of humour".) At worst, it's a revival of the Predatory Lesbian trope.

In any other story, this behaviour would not be okay. It would be called out, and Ari would face some sort of consequences for her actions, and Jaden would get support. But here, I strongly suspect this will be brushed aside as "just Ari being Ari". Or maybe a commentor will argue that it's not sexual assault and say, "Heaven forbid a woman do anything."

Then again, Blaire did looked pretty shocked at the spectacle. Maybe she'll speak up in future pages, and tell Ari it's not okay to do that to someone. She can be pretty stubborn when she strongly believes in something.

Come on, Blaire! Do it for feminism!

Vaggie and Angel were originally bisexual, but Viv changed it. Then, with the whole verblase thing, on tik tok, everyone said Charlie is a lesbian, and not the "She's in a lesbian relationship", it's "she's a lesbian" (she was also bi). And finally, Stolas. Don't quote me on it, but someone said he was queer before being changed to gay.

And now any mspec written character is only in gay relationship because she fetisheises then (bonus if mlm), or is in a straight relationship where if they are a woman, they're just there or are a pos; and if you're a man you're the center of attention.

Viv is up there on the misogyny scale with Nikki Minaj.

Tbh I never knew the Vaggie and Angel one. But going back to a comic (I think it’s canon? Idk if it’s even official but oh well) where he comments on charging extra for women, I could see it. (Once more, I cannot remember if it’s still canon or was even an official release so do please tell me if I’m wrong on this.)

Also Charlie has been Bi since day one, I know for a fact that she once dated a guy who belonged to a royal family from Greed and there were even framed photos of it in the pilot to back that up.

And yes Stolas is in fact queer since there hasn’t been any official confirmation that he has fully decided that he identifies as gay (in the context of the story, since he is a fictional character lol)

And yeah it’s clear as day to see how Viv writes women and MLM relationships.

The investigation team's sexualities (plus a bonus)

Woot woot, I think this completes the set! Now, every persona game (except for 1, I know nothing of that game lol) has a collection of what I think their sexualities are. Which, are they strict? Not really, they’re just for fun, and easy for me to do to scratch the urge to write without blowing all my energy before the upcoming kinktober! So, just enjoy, and if you’ve got any questions, pls just be respectful when asking. These are all just based on vibes I get from the anime mostly, and the animes aren’t the besssst for thorough canonicity.

Yu Narukami

While Yu is not my personal favorite persona protagonist, meaning I don’t chew on him like I do Tatsuya, or even Akira. So, his vibes are a bit hard for me to choose. On one hand, he vibes pretty strongly as evenly bisexual. Men and women equally could get it. But, on the other hand, I also get the vibe that he’s potentially under the asexual or maybe aromantic umbrella? Bisexual aromantic maybe? I have no really strong opinions on which fits more lol.

Yukiko Amagi

Yukiko gives me pretty strong lesbian energy, or female-leaning bisexual maybe? Bi-curious at a minimum. Sadly though, I don’t have a strong enough opinion to really know for surebetween those. I just know that she undeniably likes women to some extent.

Chie Satonaka

Unlike Yukiko, I don’t need to think much more on what Chie’s into. She vibes verystrongly as a lesbian. Maybe somewhat unaware at the start, but also somewhat aware at the same time. Like, maybe she just doesn’t want to admit that she knows it isn’t super duper straight to want her female friends attention and to be relied on and seen as her knight. She’s just a bit too embarrassed to really act upon that knowledge.

Kanji Tatsumi

The clear answer would to say Kanji’s simply gay. That’s sort of what the running joke is in the game, and it is hard to argue that he’s heterosexual. However, I don’t think he’s just. Gay. I think Kanji’s bi or pansexual. Women, men, neither, it doesn’t super matter to Kanji, it all confuses him on his feelings of things. Which, sadly, only makes the questioning worse and lengthens the time it’ll take for him to really pinpoint what he is and come to grips with that.

Naoto Shirogane

We are going to avoid the whole controversy around Naoto. I’ll just say that I doubt they’re heterosexual, but I can’t really say what they might be. Which, I feel is pretty fitting for Naoto. They’ve got too much going on with gender identity issues and questions to really focus on what they like in someone else. If they like you, they like you. If they don’t, they don’t.

Yosuke Hanamura

I could joke and say Yosuke’s an in-denial homosexual, but I could also take Bisexual too, since he was into Saki Konishi at the start, and I think he’s just, very very gay for Narukami. Some part of me thinks he’s so strongly into Yu, that he’s almost comphet, and his homophobic quips are some form of denial. But if I’m just looking at the vibes alone, no jokes, I think Yosuke’s bisexual and just has an unacknowledged preference for men. Specifically men named Yu Narukami.

Sho Minazuki

Gender does not matter to this man. If you can fight him and give him a fun fight in the process, you can get it. Homie is violence-sexual lol. Simple as that.

Teddie

Teddie’s a slightly weird one. Not only because he’s not human, but because he’s just. Kind of giving me weird vibes in terms of sexuality. He seems to simply mimic what others do, and since he’s roomed with Yosuke, he’s taken on a perverted act to try and fit in. He just seems more into fitting in with his friends and clinging to any form of identity he can find than any form of actual sex. So, if I had to guess what sexuality Teddie might be, I’d say he’s asexual with some biromantic or panromantic on the side. But, uh. He needs some therapy before anything.

Rise Kujikawa

Rise gives me such strong heterosexual vibes. Like, she vibes like she’s a straight girl, but she enjoys when girls crush on her, and likes to poke at any form of crush a girl might have on her. Like, she’d kiss a girl in spin the bottle, or to teach a girl to kiss, but she wouldn’t actually sleep with a girl. Maybe she’s just questioning a bit of her own sexuality, or maybe she’s more fluid than she lets on, but I personally think she’s heterosexual.

Been mulling over thoughts on the OT1 crew and their sexualities- or at least my go-to headcanons for them. This is by no means a challenge or setting things in stone, just me musing to myself and how I write them. (If anyone wants to ask about these, or about other characters not listed, my inbox is open!)

Therion: Gay, perhaps bi-romantic. Most of his years where he would have explored were spent with Darius, and I think he was the sort to monopolize Therion's time and try to dissuade him from getting close to others. (Bonus, Darius: also gay but with LOADS of internalized homophobia combined with a general distrust of others. Gets worse as he gets older. I don't generally write them as being together- but I'm not opposed to it either.)

Alfyn: Bi. Zeph noticed he had a thing for guys as much a girls before he did. (Mostly the crushes are on travelers, maybe some early ones on childhood friends that he grew out of. Nothing that ever went anywhere.)

Cyrus: Ace, demiromantic. Never put much thought into it- was always more focused on his studies and didn't understand the draw others had for dating etc. Gets his first crush while on his travels and does not know how to process it.

Olberic: I struggle to get into Olberic's head. He's depressed, he's heavily traumatized, he keeps going anyway. He and Erhardt are divorced. Were they ever a couple or simply brothers-in-arms? Either way- divorced. Gay or Bi as he gets closure and starts to properly recover, but he's also one to put his duty ahead of romantic pursuits.

Tressa: She has no idea. She's young, most of her childhood was spent scaring the other kids away because she played too rough, then after that she's focused in on learning to be a good merchant. She hasn't put any thought into romance. I do love seeing her shipped with Noa AND Ali (polycule of chaos those three, what crimes will they commit). She needs more time to figure herself out, and likely won't bother unless someone confesses to her first.

Ophilia: Married to the church. Like Tressa, she hasn't put much thought into romance before. She's more focused on her family and faith- especially as her father falls ill. I like to think she is a lesbian, but she hasn't had many chances to explore that side of herself and wouldn't be bothered if she never got married. She's happy staying single.

H'aanit: Lesbian or bi, but has not really explored romance as she (I'm sensing a pattern here) has always put her work ahead of personal pursuits. Linde also keeps would-be flirters away (either by just existing or by actively growling and hissing- not everyone meets Linde's approval). H'aanit isn't sure how to navigate romance or the dating scene herself, but does enjoy gossip on the subject (points at the banter with her, Therion, and Alfyn about Zeph's letter). Secretly likes to read romance stories.

Primrose: Bi, but has a deep seated hatred for men after working under Helgenesh. Has always been a hopeless romantic, and has a huge soft spot for men with fatherly tendencies. If things had gone different, she might have happily had children of her own one day. (I do enjoy the idea of a polycule with her, Alfyn, and Therion- they have the potential for an interesting dynamic.) I feel like she doesn't want/need romance until she has a chance to discover who she wants to be, once she is no longer simply living for revenge. I don't think she fully expected to survive to see the after.

Just wanted to say that i shared your post about Miraculous being a cross between magical girl (team) and rom-com genres and the failings of it.

It spawned a fun debate as we tried to think of other shows who tried the same thing but stayed in the mid-zone of both genres. All we ended up with was Teen Titans (as you mentioned) and Inuyasha which don't quite fit the bill as they aren't exactly magic girl shows in the traditional sense before we swerved off to try to find examples of other genres that don't mess well but should.

Anyways, just wanted to thank you for the analysis. It spawned a fun discussion.

Thank you for this lovely ask! It really made me smile. I love knowing that my stuff is getting people talking about storytelling! The main reason that I run this blog is not to dunk on Miraculous, but to talk about writing.

I'm a big fan of the saying that "failure is the greatest teacher," but I also like to point out that it doesn't need to be your failure! Talking about the things a piece of media did wrong and comparing it to media that did those things right is one of the best ways to learn about writing and far more helpful than just looking at good stories as there are thousands of ways to tell a good story.

To give my two cents to your debate (without knowing the fine details) the first two seasons of Digimon have some similar dynamics of romance between various leads, though it's also not a magical girl team show and the romance is certainly not focused on like it is in Teen Titans. One magical girl team show that did a great job of having a romance plot play a big role in a story is - strangely enough - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

While it's not really a rom-com (though it could have been and worked just as well), the second season ends with a two-part episode called A Canterlot Wedding and it's very cute. The couple that's established in that special goes on to have several episodes focused on them and their romance.

The reason this worked so well was that the romance was between ponies outside of the core team, so you didn't have to figure out how to make friendship the most important thing while also making romantic love the most important thing. By making both forces important in their own ways, the writers were able to let the couple be extremely close and passionate about each other while also allowing friendship to have a key role.

That's the issue that you have to keep in mind if you want to try to blend the genres: figure out a way to add in a romance without messing up the core team and creating a setup where romance is making friendship take a back seat. You also need to figure out how to deal with someone external to the team warring with the team for narrative importance.

My two cents? Just make some of the magical girls lesbians, bi, pan, or any other sexuality that allows for same-sex attraction. That should allow you to have romance in your team without the nasty complication of trying to make a person external to the team super important. After all, what is a good romance if not a friendship with bonus features? I wouldn't be surprised if there's a story out there that has already done this (not sure if Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus from Sailor Moon count since I don't think that their romance gets a major story line around it, but if it does, then just mirror that!)

And if there's not a magical girl team show that has done this? Then I'm certain that you can find fanfic that has. After all, people tend to ship the characters who get the most screen time together no matter who the canon love interests are supposed to be. That's why shonen anime is dominated by yaoi ships. Those shows rarely develop the hetero love interest the way that magical girl team shows do and so people ship the guys together. Meanwhile, magical girl team shows assume that the audience wants a good romance and so the hetero love interests tend to feel more fleshed out.

Appropriately this take wasn’t on Tumblr much) that ppl were mad at Kripke and Co for taking an unforeseen “gay turn” with Frenchie’s character in S4 ..? And I’m over here with my Sherlock Holmes cap and pipe and tiny detective notebook just

trying to understand how these ppl didn’t pick up on the bipan vibes from this beautiful, majestic, so-French-he-can't-help-it butterfly.

(Also all this hand wringing about Frenchie "turning gay," te lo juro me esta eloqueciendo alaverga. Like canwenot with the bi-erasure, it’s giving Ashley telling Maeve she’s a lesbian bc is more “clear-cut” and easier to sell than bi. It’s just as insulting to call a bipan person gay as it is to call them straight. And I don’t mean like the use of gay as a catch all that a lotta us queers use sometimes interchangeably for queer, I talkin ppl acting as tho bipan isn't real and/or thinking Frenchie jumped out the closet as a gay man 3/4 of the way thru the show.)

And their confusion over this has got me confused. Like I didn’t even realize it was such a plot twist until I got on Reddit and a lotta ppl were screaming like Ned Stark's head just got cut off, or like it's some wild-ass writer's room shenanigans where the character is suddenly a diff person for no discernible reason. Like have you seen this man? Do you know where you are? Bc they’ve been dropping hints throughout the show. Case in point:

a) Little Nina and all that talk about her Sergei ahem it's Serge and his overwhelming enthusiasm for butt stuff and Vincent Cassel try to convince me Sr. Cassel wasn’t a childhood crush of Frenchie’s or someth and that’s why it’s his safe word. You can’t

b) this time he planted a fat smooch on Hughie’s face after finding out he leaked the compound V tip to the press (bonus points for his attempt to make out with mm before getting a no-homo hard pass)

c) this deep, abiding love of The Golden Girls this is unequivocally the gayest thing on the list

d) how he turned tricks in mad NYC before Little Nina locked that mf in a chastity belt and held him hostage by his penis he went to ‘work’ for Nina. -> Disclaimer: this is not to imply that queer ppl’s participation in sex work is bc they’re hypersexual. This is here to point out queer coding, as lgbtqia+ ppl are more at-risk for mental health issues stemming from severe trauma, food and housing insecurity, and addiction, often without access to the care they need to recover. So sex work becomes a viable vocation to survive bc unlike a regular 9-5, it’s more conducive to untreated mental health issues and substance use also it’s an easier market to get into than arms dealing or contract killing

Why gay!Eddie is just around the corner…

Last episode was a lot. And not just because the break up happened.

The fandom was speculating about this episode being Eddie-centric being the episode that he finally realized he was gay or that at least we would get a step towards his gay awakening. So, a lot were kinda devastated and disappointed that nothing happened.

But did it really?

Let’s break it down how much the episode gave us and why we are this close to gay!Eddie (and presumably Buddie).

Yes. Eddie did not have a sudden realization during confessional or a break down to confess his undying love for Buck. But nevertheless, this episode was a total win on these things. You just have to look a bit deeper into it to find all the hints and the foreshadowing for future episodes.

Eddie telling the priest that he is straight.

Eddie telling the priest during confessional that he hurt people with his behavior – Chris, his best friend, his girlfriend.

Eddie wanted to have some juice but then switched to buying himself some water.

Josh’s speech to Buck to make him understand Tommy.

Josh made a Glee reference during his speech.

The LAFD doesn’t allow beards.

Eddie calls his mustache a disguise.

Ryan calling Eddie straight in his interviews (and Oliver did as well) and talking about finding a “good woman”.

Bonus from prior episodes:

Eddie talking to the cheerleader’s father, asking him if he thinks that his son is weak for cheerleading and referencing to himself.

Now, let’s talk about these points a bit more.

1. “I’m straight!”

Concerning a sexuality being mentioned in a tv show, it is very uncommon for a character to point out that they are straight. Usually, queer characters say that they are gay, lesbian, bi or whatever. Because (unfortunately) for most people straight is still the default sexuality and doesn’t have to be addressed separately. So, it is very suspicious that Eddie told the priest that he is straight. Especially, since the priest joining him at the table (even though Eddie did not know it was the priest then) and the short conversation before that sentence was not really openly flirtatious. Yes, it gave some flirty vibes if you were looking for them. So, Eddie immediately deflecting with telling the other man that he is straight? He could have worded this differently. “I don’t swing that way” or “I am not like that” or any other way. But he used the words “I am straight” to remind the audience that up to this moment Eddie thinks that he is straight. Remember that everything in a tv show is very intentional and often has subtext. This scene totally fits in this kind of scenes when a character says something on screen just to hear the narrator’s voice saying in a voice over “In fact, he was not straight”.

This simple sentence was, concerning the “show don’t tell” rule, a quick reminder and one step closer to Eddie embracing his real sexuality. That he is not straight at all.

2. The order of the mentioned people

During confessional he told the priest that he hurt a lot of people with his behavior. Chris was mentioned first. His son. The most important person in his life that got hurt due to the Kim fiasco. And instead of listing Marisol, his girlfriend that time, next it was Buck. His best friend. And THEN Marisol followed.

This order is very important. Yes, people might say it is just a list of people but… again. Intentional writing. These are not real people and what they say and how they talk always has a layer and is intentional.

So, him mentioning Buck before Marisol is telling us that Buck is, after Chris, really the second most important person in Eddie’s life. Not his girlfriend. It is Buck.

This also fits into what we have already seen in season 7 when Eddie’s actions seemed to have a bigger influence on Buck who acted like the spouse instead of Marisol. Buck confronted him and had deep conversations with Eddie. It was not Marisol’s role who was the actual partner. Buck was in that position.

Therefore, it is only natural to list him as the second person and not her. She just seemed like an afterthought.

3. Juice vs. water

The show in form of the priest explained that the juice and the water were a symbol for Eddie punishing himself. That he thinks that he does not deserve something nice and good. Therefore, he switched from juice to water.

And yes, the drinks are a symbol for that. But not only for his punishment.

Queer people are often called “fruity” or “juicy”. The juice stands for Eddie’s real sexuality that he is still denying himself. Because he thinks that he does not deserve being happy and his true self. He is not ready yet for the juice/his gayness and therefore chooses the water/straightness. Because this is what he deserves. The bland and boring water instead of the tasty juice.

Later on, the priest tells Eddie that he still is allowed to enjoy things and that he should do something joyful because right now he is denying himself good things because of not feeling worthy. Eddie asks him “I don’t feel worthy of juice?” The priest replies “of joy”. So, yes. He deserves joy. And the juice. If this brings him joy. Feels kind of an absolution that he does not need to pretend to be straight. He is allowed to want the juice, to accept his own queerness.

4. Josh’s speech

Yes, this speech was not directed at Eddie. It was Josh talking to Buck. And even though it seemed he was talking about Tommy so that Buck could realize what he had with his now ex-boyfriend.

But actually, Josh was NOT talking about Tommy. He does not know Tommy at all. Not about his past and what he has gone through. In fact, he said something that was not true. Because Tommy was also one of the gay people who came out later in life (even though he might have known that he was gay a lot earlier than Buck found out he was bi). So, saying that he was one of the older queers who had to go through so much… Josh was talking about himself. He was projecting his own experience onto Tommy who is about his age so that he assumed that Tommy had gone through the same. And not only was he talking about himself instead of Tommy… He was also kind of explaining compulsory heterosexuality – comphet – to the audience. This is something most people who are not a part of the LGBTQIA+ community or a close ally do not know about. So, Josh was talking about a guy trying to force himself to pretend to be straight. Force himself into a marriage with a woman to be, to feel, normal. How society expects him to be. Until he finally can be his true self. Rings a bell? This screams Eddie who was pushed into the marriage with Shannon due to her being pregnant. We got a lot of hints in earlier seasons that he always thought that dating was a performance, that he loved the thought of being married to Shannon but never said that he loved her and so on… This speech was about Eddie and him being comphet right now.

5. The Glee reference

Probably it is just an Easter Egg and a nod to Ryan Murphy who is responsible for Glee.

But you can also put some interpretation into it. Because some might not have watched the show. There is a character called Kurt. In season one he pretended to be straight to be “normal”. He even tried to date some of his female classmates. But in the end, it did not work out and he admitted that he was gay and started to live like his true self.

Another bell that is ringing? This also sounds like Eddie who tried and tried so many times to seem straight by marrying Shannon, having girlfriends, living the life his parents and society expected him to lead, denying his truth. But in the end, Eddie, like Kurt, will find true happiness the moment he accepts himself as a gay person.

6. The LAFD doesn’t accept beards.

This is just a simple one. We know that partners are called beards to make another person seem straight. Marisol was Eddie’s beard. As was Ana and Shannon. Even though Eddie might not know it yet that they were beards.

7. The mustache

Eddie explained that he would have gone full beard mode but had to go with the mustache instead. Without he feels like a failure, a person who does not deserve forgiveness or joy. So, he needed this as a disguise. As a mask.

And there is a lot he has to hide. Like his true feelings and how lonely and isolated he feels since Chris is gone now (this was referenced and kinda foreshadowed in the episode before during Buck’s voice over when we saw Eddie being on his own, taking down his Halloween decorations, all sad while he acted normal the rest of the time when he was with other people).

But not only this is something that he has or wants to hide. There are more feelings he wants to mask. And these feelings are about his sexuality. About the person he can rely on and who is his significant other. Yes, this could be some reach. But combined with all the other hints it is not that unlikely that the disguise is also needed for his sexuality.

The priest explained that “we can’t take care of others if we don’t first take care of ourselves”. Which means that Eddie has to get rid of this disguise (by shaving off the mustache – RIP) and to take care of himself. Accept himself and his failures… and who he really is. A gay man.

8. The interviews

Honestly, they are the least I am worried about. Yes, Ryan and Oliver called Eddie straight, talking about him find a “good woman”. So what? What else should they say? They would never ever spoil a big storyline. Do people expect them to talk about “oh, and next episode Eddie will be gay”? Let’s be real. They have to answer questions from the present point of the story. And therefore, Ryan was not lying. Right now, Eddie is straight and just Buck’s best friend.

What will happen next? They cannot talk about it. They need to keep the audience invested, that we will tune in again and again. Because, let’s be honest, in the end, the numbers are what really count. How many viewers and how the episode is perceived.

You see there are a lot of hints for Eddie’s upcoming journey. We do not know how long it will take to get there. But this season and especially this episode has put down a very good foundation for what will happen next. We just need to be patient.

Do you feel as though most lesbians on radblr (not all of course) are… you know? Like.. they progressively become more and more biphobic after months or years of being decent. honestly i don't think of this as a lesbian problem. afaik 22v6 wasn't a lesbian. i can't really speak on the other users you mentioned bc i don't follow them, i've seen some of the behavior i'm about to describe from some of them but they don't come to mind when i'm thinking of some of the worst things i've seen on here.

radblr in general just has an accountability issue. someone will say something biphobic (or homophobic! afaik that woman who made that homophobic pastor comparison remade and carried right along) and some people will express disapproval, but most will ignore it or try to downplay it and they'll keep interacting with that user. i'll use heterophobicdyke as an example since she's deactivated, but someone in her inbox was complaining that bi women "whine" about our rape and dv statistics, and in her response she completely brushed past it, zero acknowledgement of that being a fucked up thing to say. that's one typical radblr response. downplaying is another. but the worst imo is being accused of being manipulative.

so if we complain about being called dickmunchers on here, we may be told it's just "venting" and to log off and get real problems, but if we mention said real problems (rape and ipv statistics as well as substance abuse and mental illness statistics) then we must be weaponizing those statistics to play the victim in the great lesbian vs bisexual war that we've all been drafted in i guess. bi women are all master manipulators, obviously.
