The infamous puppy debacle of '94

new idea: shen yuan transmigrates into a pidw version with abo dynamics, but he doesn't know about it.

he knows what abo is, but it's so far removed from his expectations that it simply doesn't cross his mind at all. with that, cang qiong is a respectable, upstanding sect, so there is no growling, claiming, scent pushing or primal instinct stuff going on. people also don't mention it, as it's simply not relevant most of the time, and is considered rude to discuss unprompted.

shen qingqiu, of course, is an omega (the characters who make the best omegas are the ones who would hate it the most), but he has suppressed it with his qi for most of his life because he doesn't want to be seen as weak. the other peak lords assume he's a beta.

now, i'm not a traditional abo dynamic fan, but, there is something very appealing to me about the nesting and scenting aspect of it.

it starts out slow and painfully oblivious, with shen yuan assuming cultivators must have a really good sense of smell, and it's simply book logic that every character seems to have a signature scent. all those romance novels always mention characters smelling of pine and flowers and scotch and leather, so this isn't a foreign concept. liu qingge, for instance, is the bai zhan war god, girls fall for him left and right, it's only natural he smells of musk and deep woodsy notes, like the earth after it rains. right?

besides that, shen yuan has always been a homebody who loves his creature comforts, so him getting extra blankets and pillows and soft fabrics for his bed to curl up in isn't odd at all. or him collecting soft pretty things. shen qingqiu already has fans and night pearls and hair ribbons and silky clothes, so nothing changes.

then without-a-cure hits.

the poison breaks down the suppressors that the original shen qingqiu put in place, and his body starts restoring the balance. this worsens the cravings, and sets off his omega instincts.

he gathers more blankets, but it doesn't fill the need, like there's something missing. then liu qingge forgets his outer robe in his house after a meridian cleansing to deal with an emergency, and that robe ends up in his bed. he tries to reason it's a comfort thing—he wore his dad's sweater when he was young and had nightmares, and liu qingge does smell very nice, so is it really that strange that he holds it at night and presses his face against the collar where the scent is the strongest to soothe himself?

his own scent starts to develop as well, much stronger than the mild, watery green tea flavor from before, and people notice.

thing is, though, that there are many formalities and rules of conduct around omegas, one of which is not to bring up their status in any improper or unbidden way. so even though the alpha lords now notice a very distinct omega scent coming off their shixiong, they can't mention it out of societal pressure. so, they don't.

shen yuan still doesn't notice a thing.

the first time liu qingge smells it is during their bi-weekly cleansing session, when shen qingqiu leans in and liu qingge gets a mouthful of green tea, bamboo and honeyed jasmine, soft and sweet and pleased and so very content it sets off his alpha brain and he has to rein himself in before he starts releasing his own pheromones like some inexperienced teenager—

he's only just grown used to their amity and their habit of sharing tea and cakes after the cleansing, but now shen qingqiu is sitting there smiling at him and smelling like—like liu qingge is spoiling him and, making him feel safe...

he doesn't bring it up, downs his tea, and leaves.

meanwhile shen qingqiu keeps happily nesting away, filling his bed with all kinds of soft fabrics, some clothes of other people that he's trying really hard not to think about. everything is going well, binghe just turned sixteen and the girls are calling him an 'alpha', so his little bun is growing well into his protagonist charms! yue qingyuan comes by more often, acting a little strange but shen qingqiu is used to that by now. he looks very bashful offering him a ribbon of his, a pretty silver one that smells of incense and ozone, and shen qingqiu happily accepts it.

one time binghe comes back bruised and scuffed from a fight with bai zhan disciples, and shen qingqiu tsks at the strange smells on him, do those brutes ever bathe?? he rubs his hands over binghe's sleeves to try and get some of it off, and his poor bun must still be in shock because he stares wide-eyed at his shizun. he must also be getting forgetful because shen qingqiu finds that same robe still unwashed a week later in binghe's bedroom.

he also loves it when people brush or play with his hair, it's his favorite part of the evening when binghe helps him take down his hair for the night. the combs feel so nice on his scalp, if he could purr he would! (binghe's heart sobs quietly behind him, in complete disbelief his master is purring at him).

his icy, lofty demeanor has all but shattered, because now every time he tries to act aloof, like when yue qingyuan gives him a present or liu qingge shows up on his doorstep, his sweet, pleased scent betrays him.

the opposite is true, as well, when without-a-cure flares up and he's in pain and his scent goes sour and distressed, even when he's waving everyone off saying he's fine. the entire house smells of burnt tea leaves and ash after a nightmare, and shen qingqiu is very confused when liu qingge comes to pick him up for a meeting but then refuses to leave.

anyway he doesn't find out until after the conference when airplane tells him to keep his acrid scent under control, his house is starting to stink.

You have no idea how normal I am about my monster OCs. They're so lovely just let me—ahhh!

Hawthorn is a Mothman monster. His wings are based on the garden tiger moth and he is so fluffy! He has a thick fuzz on his neck and chest and is a warm, cuddlebug. He also possesses bright orange eyes that pierce the darkness and startle the unfortunate late-night hikers or anyone piercing into the woods after midnight.

He has a thing for hanging out in the thick woods near where the MC lives. Wherever he goes, bad omens follow. He really shouldn't be near MC—he knows he'll be the death of his precious little human, but he can't help it. He's drawn to the MC like a moth to a flame (heheh). He's delightful and gentlemanly, but don't let that fool you. He's got a possessive stretch a mile wide and does not take kindly to anyone giving the MC looks or reaching out for a too-familiar touch. He will bristle and buzz, and fly swift and silent through the darkness to chase after anyone to ensure the MC stays all to himself. He is a bad omen, after all.

Grease is an oil demon! He feeds off of fear, literally, and delights in terrifying people in the night. His body is slick and iridescent, and he is constantly dripping black goo from his person. He is capable of shifting his form to hide in a puddle, slink underneath doors, or bubble through a crack in a broken window. He's got wicked sharp teeth, and eyes like a tiger but with a pale, unsettling blue color. He possesses tendrils on his head that constantly drip and a long, slick tail that he can use to grab MC by the ankle. He's terribly seductive and charming, terrifying but mischievous. He likes to say 'boo' just to watch MC jump. Of course, he's not all tang and salt. He's got a sweet side that rouses in a protectiveness over MC. He's possessive, sure, and he's marked his claim with the oil stains on MC's work apron, but he's got an ooey-gooey center of sweetness that MC occasionally finds when he blushes at a stray touch or a nice comment about him.

Calmo 91, otherwise just called Calmo, is a robot. Constructed in the 90s with a box TV screen head to match, he has bright yellow optics in the screen face along with thick wires falling behind his head in a ponytail-like fashion. He is cool and difficult to read but wickedly intelligent and learning much about humans and affections. His body is a thin endoskeleton with plastic matt gray coverings that give peeks of blue, red, and yellow wires at his metallic joints. He's got a mysterious past the MC is attempting to unravel that he truly wishes the MC would leave be. He's got much to learn about technology but he quickly figures out how to connect to the MC's phone for texting, phone calls, and other useful things of course, like keeping tags on where MC is and monitoring MC's heart rate. Useful tools. Modern technology. Living in the MC's house, he gets to spend more domestic time with the human he decided is kind and generous, but the MC occasionally finds him at the foot of the bed in the darkness, his yellow optics strangely switched to red until the MC says his name and his optics revert back to yellow again.

Because of Childe’s birthday recently I had a thought, would Legacy have had the same birthday as Childe? Would Legacy know what a birthday is? -Foul Legacy doesn’t actually know when his birthday is!! He was more focused on survival than celebration before Childe- Ajax, then- tumbled into the Abyss -It’s only after he ascends to the surface of Teyvat clinging to a mortal’s mind does he learn what birthdays are -He doesn’t really understand at first. Isn’t everyone born? Legacy doesn’t see the point in celebrating something that’s natural and normal -Or, rather, he doesn’t see the need to celebrate HIS birthday. It’s only when Ajax’s first birthday with him rolls around that it sinks in. Ajax is alive and here, Legacy is HAPPY that Ajax was born -There’s a burst of excited, overwhelmed chirps and chitters in the back of Ajax’s head, and he has to hold back laughter as Legacy essentially scrambles around his brain happily -Even so, he still never celebrated his own birthday. He was content just watching his host receive his yearly congratulations; as Childe, Tartaglia, and Ajax -It’s you who decides to finally give him his own little celebration, just a day after Ajax’s. The Harbinger is delighted at the idea, an enormous grin spreading across his face when you ask him to help -Legacy can vaguely sense his thoughts and eagerness, but they’re frustratingly locked away as Childe sometimes does. He can almost SEE his smug grin in his head, letting out an irritated huff -You and Childe spend the whole day preparing- well, YOU do, he helps as much as he can before he’s dragged off to work by his sheepish subordinates even on the weekend, laughing and waving all the while -There are streamers and sparkling ornaments and tiny stars everywhere- no balloons. They terrify the both of you when they pop, and Foul Legacy has claws made to pierce the toughest hides. As something extra special you gather some shiny stones from your rock shelf and place them here and there, chunks of glittering colorful inedible candy -You’re just done setting up when the door opens again, the sun nearly below the horizon in an array of bright reds, oranges, and purples. There’s a crackling static sound as Childe allows Foul Legacy to take control, a pair of crimson horns peeking inside with a curious trill -He lets out a yelp of surprise at the new decorations; you spread your hands with a smile and a singsong “Surprise!” like a mischievous magician, and Legacy’s single crystalline eye goes wide with awe -In less than two seconds you’re suddenly scooped off the floor, his head bumping against yours as he nuzzles and purrs, overjoyed and wings aflutter. Tonight is for him? Just for him? And Ajax doesn’t mind at all? You laugh, smooching his masked cheek with a nod, and Legacy is beside himself with delight -He LOVES sweet treats, especially when you let him taste test something new you tried making, so of course you had to whip up a cake for him to munch on. Although at the moment he seems more engrossed in nibbling and licking your cheek. Eventually you'll get him to take a bite of the pastry, and are met with satisfied coos and a rumble so strong it makes you physically vibrate -All he really needs and wants to have an amazing day is to be near you, so he nudges you over to the couch and promptly snuggles against you, his head pressed into your lap and watching you adoringly. There’s a streamer or two tangled in his horns and claws, the very tip of his tongue sticking out from his fanged maw

-You show Legacy your rock collection. He’s seen it before, but he loves seeing it again and again and hearing you talk about each stone. The purple amethyst from Inazuma is his now, as a little gift, and displayed proudly in his blanket nest room, right next to the tiny glass narwhal you got Ajax. Legacy is extremely careful, they’d both be safest in there -Speaking of blankets, you spent all week making a new, thick quilt for him to bundle himself into, all embroidered with little constellations and whales. His eye glows happily when you present it to him, immediately attempting to crawl underneath it with a muffled chitter of delight -He gently bumps your cheek when you put on some music to play, shaking out his lilac fluff and holding out a hand for you to take, to dance with him. There’s some distant memory of how Ajax would dance at home, and neither of you are well coordinated enough to not end up in a pile on the floor, overcome with beautiful and grumbling laughter

-Playfully you stick a few star-shaped stickers on Legacy’s face, and ponder- if he wore a party hat, would he wear one between his horns or two on top of his horns? You’ll have to ask him next year, when you can find or make decent little hats for the both of you, just like you’ll ask if he wants to help with the decorating, too. This year was a surprise, but you can bet on the Adepti that you’ll be doing it every year afterwards -He shifts in your lap, a yawn pulled from his mouth and showing all his sharp teeth like a cat as he rumbles and croons tiredly, smushing his face against your legs. You put in the effort to celebrate, to make him feel as special as you think he is, and that makes today the perfect birthday

-It’s actually better that you didn’t celebrate it on the same day as Ajax’s birthday- you’re very particular in how you planned everything, not wanting either of your two beloveds to get overshadowed by the other -Foul Legacy still doesn’t know what day he was actually born, and never will. But for all he cares, his real birthday is the day you decided to celebrate him in his entirety

Height reference where I accidentally drew Rock a bit farther (again) because I was worried he'd end up stepping on Pit's foot. I had to reassure myself that I wasn't drawing anyone too big/small, and after comparing my older art it looks like I still have things as I intended.

I was going to draw the crown too but decided I don't hate myself that much(maybe some other day), and gave him a golden laurel crown, bcs I'm obsessed with that as a motif, and also its very remincient of the boy king statue that started this whole thing!

There's some symbolism of this, both intentionally but also just historically. I love that the orb represents that the monarch is holding the world in their hand, basically every old monarchy has one of those, and I think it's very cool for symbolism. But also bcs of that, I was forced to basically draw catholic fanart so, you win some you lose some. The star halo above him head is both to reference those religious statues with star crowns(I saw them a lot in Europe and they imprinted onto my brain), as well as: his four championships of course!

Bad news: That joke post about including Reset + Orchid is definitely not canon. (I legit got sad thinking about Reset being in a universe where Orchid isn't- because their stories are so so intertwined- but Nightmare 100% would NOT risk the whole twins exploding Error's soul thing.)
