A bronze portrait of a man, dated to the 30s BC. It has been suggested that the man portrayed could be Sextus Pompey, probably due to the bust's resemblance to his image on the coins he issued when in control of Sicily.

This is about brothers (and sisters): but this is about brothers who are trying to resurrect their brothers, this is about brothers who mourn, this is about brothers who drag the body of their dead brother around and plead, wait for me! don't go where I can't follow!

Ancient Roman Politicians on a Modern Date
Gaius Julius Caesar: He invites you to a dinner party at his house and is a fairly witty and engaging host, but all of his stories seem to be about himself. However, friends assure you he's "every woman's man and every man's woman," so stick around for the nightcap he offers you if that makes you curious.
Marcus Licinius Crassus: For a man who is absolutely the wealthiest you've ever met, it seems a little convenient that he 'forgot his wallet' on your date to that expensive gastropub, so you couldn't go halfsies and had to pay for both your meals. The gold flake dessert shines bright, but you sort of wish he'd choke on it.
Gnaeus Pompeius Maximus: It's kind of weird how he takes you around to show you his art collection since it mainly consists of statues of himself, but hey, at least he's interested in art? He also tells a lot of stories about himself. However, he has a reputation for being a devoted husband and he's in between spouses, so if you're ready for that, give him a chance.
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus aka Augustus: He literally wrote out a plan for your entire date, how it would go, and what he would say to the most commonly asked smalltalk questions. Do not deviate from his script. He takes you somewhere like a museum or a fancy restaurant where they barely feed you, but although he is polished, his romantic delivery seems a little flat until you run into his best friend Agrippa... They are just besties, right?
Marcus Antonius aka Mark Antony: Ok, there are a couple ways this could go. He is either an absolutely fantastic date who takes you to see a hilarious play and finishes off with a fun night on the town, or he takes you to a bar in a seedy part of town where you dance and drink and party all night. Either way he gives you nice gifts and is charming and funny. On a later date he may take you on the most expensive, romantic, fancy date ever. Most likely a good time date, just don't expect things to get serious unless you're the Queen of Egypt.
Marcus Aemilius Lepidus: He never showed up for your date. Completely ghosted you. You track down his coworkers Mark Antony and Octavian and they say they have no idea where he is either. Weird.
Marcus Agrippa: He takes you on a tour of the city, pointing out all the architecture and finishes this off with dinner. He seems nice, intelligent, and is very attentive to your needs. So why isn't he off the market yet? His attachment to his slightly creepy best friend and roommate Octavian, maybe? They were roommates.
Sextus Pompeius Magnus Pius: A much better date than his father, he takes you to his private boat and gives you a seaside tour. He valiantly fights off pirates during your date, but did you catch one of them winking at him? Regardless, it's an unforgettable adventure.
Who would you rather date? And again, I'm sorry, Lepidus.
As always, thanks to @just-late-roman-republic-things for inspiring these posts.

It's the late Roman Republic...
Now put in the tags what you selected and who you THINK it's referring to... Because I sneakily had at least two people in mind when I made each option and when the poll is over I'll reveal who I had in mind for each option

Plutarch, Antony (trans. Scott-Kilvert)
#wahoo#sextus pompey#ugh. technically. we're in the empire tag from my own chronology regarding how i split the timeline#however sextus pompey gets special rights. on account of being one of my favorites#SO! into the#roman republic tag#he goes!#komiks tag#drawing tag#ALRIGHT. we're done here. i was actually flipping through shakespeare's A&C earlier and turning around some thoughts about how#the antony-octavia marriage in that is actually four people. agrippa and octavian also.#and in turn i was like. well! the antony-octavian voyeurism-cuckold comic could in fact get worse! what fun!#unfortunately i took critical psychic damage @ the realization that if i drew it i would have TWO antony-octavian voyeurism-cuckold comics#that quite frankly the fact that i have already done one is Enough#on the other hand. i am considering thoughts about pompey and antony. intriguing dynamic. sextus is all teeth sometimes and i do like that

The two most beautiful apprenticeships of the Late Republic are Caelius+Cicero and Sextus Pompey+Erichtho.
Now let us put them in the same university.
#yes yes. i know what you are thinking. one of them is a terrible dark force: snatching corpses; snaring souls; perverting universe itself.#and the other is from thessaly.#pharsalia#marcus tullius cicero#erichtho#marcus caelius rufus#sextus pompey

SEXTUS POMPEIUS was only 32 years old when he died. Had he bit the bullet and swore fealty to Antony and become a naval commander under Antony, perhaps things could have turned out better for both of them in the long run. Being an experienced and battle-hardened naval commander and learning many lessons from fighting Agrippa on the seas. But as soon as he reaches Antony's side of the Empire after his defeat at Naulochus, he tries to ally himself with the Parthians, Antony's enemies. He then puts up a futile fight against Antony with all the remaining forces. He is captured and killed.
If he had just decided to join Antony, he could have prevented Agrippa from stealing and destroying Antony's ships at the Battle of Actium. Just imagine if he was put in command of the Romano-Egyptian fleet at Actium. Perhaps he could have won that naval engagement for Antony.

Okay of these three characters (all historical and real) who would you most be interested in reading novel/s about?
Pompeius Magnus - rule breaker, golden boy, literally the most likable guy, builder of great buildings and most successful general ever pretty much. He also respects women which is just unheard of in his day to the point people make fun of him for it. He's also got a lot of tragedy and loss and the most poignant and cinematic death in all of history
Sextus Pompeius - "pirate", rebel, heart of absolute gold, honorable even to the people who deserve it least. Savior to hundreds, lord of Sicily. Dutiful son of a slain father. Also experiences a lot of loss. The last resistance to the totalitarian triumvirs. Very successful against them for years and largely forgotten by history. He was given the libelous title of "pirate king" but that just makes him sound cooler if you ask me
Pompeia Magna - fatherless at age six, tumultuous childhood that ends with her being put in the care of her uncle (this is where history ends and my made up story for her begins) used as a pawn to curry favor with a man she despises who was responsible for the ruin of her family, proud in spite of her humiliation. Taken under the wing of the "empress" who knew her as a child. She brushes shoulders with some of the big names of her day including the eventual successor to the governing of the empire. Without any true family to guard and protect her she is both more exposed to danger but also capable of more freedom of movement. She navigates the deadly waters of Rome to outlive all her enemies and see the men who put her in harms way brought to justice and to finally achieve her lifelong goal of living in security on her family's ancestral lands
Definitely put any further thoughts in the comments and tags

Inviting Ancient Roman Politicians to a Modern Costume Party
Gaius Julius Caesar
Enjoys a good party and accepts your invitation, but when you go to pick him up you aren't sure if he's in a costume or just dresses like that. It's a very fabulous look. Or maybe he's dressed up as Elton John?
Marcus Licinius Crassus
The only way he attends is if you bribe him to go. He takes cash, Google pay, Apple Pay, Paypal, Cash App, and Venmo. It costs extra if you want him in a costume.
Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus aka Pompey
He will accept your invitation, but he wants to go in one of those inflatable costumes that looks like he's riding an elephant. If you can fit that in your car and through all the doorways, he'll be decent company at the party.
Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus aka Augustus
If Agrippa is meeting you there, lead with that and you might convince him to join you. He'll want all the details on the party and who will be there, so indulge him. He doesn't particularly want to wear a costume, but might dress as Apollo if pressed.
Marcus Antonius aka Mark Antony
He will absolutely come to your party, you don't even have to twist his arm. He likely takes it over once he arrives, though, so be prepared! He is fun and charming, but will not be going home sober. He might dress as Hercules, Dionysus, or Osiris.
Marcus Aemilius Lepidus
The way he disappears when you're at the party, he might as well be dressed as the Invisible Man. No really. Where'd he go?
Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa
He will go and stay with you, a loyal friend, unless Octavianus shows up and then he ultimately follows him. He didn't wear a costume but let someone paint a teardrop on his face. He wins "Most Original Costume" for his 'personification of human sadness' outfit. He doesn't look happy about it.
Publius Clodius Pulcher
He's always up for a party and will look a million times better in his costume than you do. Whatever you do, don't tell him about that girl's night only Halloween party unless you want him to show up dressed like one of the girls. (He'll be really fun, but might cause a divorce.)
Sextus Pompeius Magnus Pius
He is gracious as a guest and wears a nautical Captain's costume. He'll party with you, but not over indulge. Just don't ask if he's a pirate, that's rude.
Marcus Junius Brutus
He only accepts the invitation if friends of his are going to the party. His costume seems to be a dark hood and cape and he disappears into the corner with Cassius soon after you arrive.
Gaius Cassius Longinus
He is quite amiable with his friends and if he's yours, he'll accept your invitation. The costume is sleek and dark and furtive, possibly a rogue or assassin? Just don't be hurt when he disappears into a corner with Brutus at some point in the night.
Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix
You do not want to invite him, do you? If you do, he accepts. Although he was wearing regular clothes initially, they're definitely covered in blood before you're at the party for long. That's fake blood... right?
Marcus Tullius Cicero
You have to cajole him to go, but once he is there, he is happy to be the center of attention telling jokes and stories. Wearing a costume is beneath his dignity, but judging everyone else's is not.
