I'm sorry for so much inactivity throughout the months- I have actually not felt very proud of my identity in a while, and it's a just become a less major part of me. I still identify the same but because of events in my life I haven't been inclined to celebrate it, and discussions surrounding these sorts of things are just not a huge thing in my life anymore. I had experienced major loss and had been going through it when I made this blog, I guess it slowly changed that part of me that felt open and proud of my orientation. I had been going more and more back into the closet at school. I've given up on a lot of things as time passes because I've lost energy for a lot of my hobbies and interests. maybe this will change if my life improves, but this is just how it's been. I'll still reblog posts occasionally for now but currently I just don't have the mental space to make in depth posts or discuss these things

You know, this makes me wonder...
I haven't played the videogames (though it's on my list) but, usually, game protagonists are given multiple dialogue options so that you can sort of make them your own.
Videogame writers will attempt to allow you to determine the character's personality, motivations, struggles, etc. in response to what's happening to them. The way they respond will then also influence your own companions' storylines, the type of relationship they will develop with "you", etc.
Soo... By cutting Geralt's dialogue as much as possible, it almost feels like Henry Cavill has been attempting to give fans of the videogame that same level of "agency" and "ownership" over the character as they would while playing him, while totally disregarding Geralt's personality from the books.
Perhaps that may be why those angry rabid gamer fanboys are so fond of Cavill's performance, and see it as the only good thing about the TV show.
TV show Geralt is more or less a "blank slate" where everything is left up to the viewer's interpretation! His grunts, "fuck", sighs, etc. can mean anything you decide they should mean!
So, of course they love it! They can project themselves into the character, and give this Geralt whatever personality they want!
It's an impersonal performance meant to allow you to fill in the blanks, in a sense.
The other characters fully exist in their world, while his version of Geralt is essentially a vessel for the viewer.
I've been thinking about The Witcher books and tv show recently. Because half of the things that make Geralt seem cool and edgy in the show just don't exist in the books.
In the show he's always so stoic. Most of his exposition has to be told by side characters implying things and you just have to gage his reaction to decide if it's true or not. In the books however, he gives a full lore dump to anyone who's remotely nice to him.
Random Character: So how've you been?
Show Geralt: Hmmmm.... 😒 😔 😒...
Book Geralt: Terrible actually, thank you for asking. Monster hunting is dying out and I have zero transferable skills. Yennifer's left me again and Jaskier's off god knows where. Overall I suppose it could be worse, but that's the life or a Witcher. Also, my perfectly good leather jacket got ruined in a fight the day after I bought it :(

that said, i appreciate too HOW that theme fell to the wayside in s2 because if a situation calls for it, sometimes if you can, you do what you can.
i've never been a huge fan of that 'you don't want to sink to their level by fighting back' stuff. it always makes me wonder if it's coming from a person who hasnt actually needed to defend themselves, because sometimes the only way TO escape is to throw a hit. everyone has the right to self-defense. not going toe to toe with someone who wants to kill you when you can just run is obviously ideal, but that situation isnt always ideal suffice it to say.
reigen has been in situations where he's needed to protect himself like this before, but they're rarer than situations he's been in where he can weasel his way out verbally. 'don't sink to their level' is great advice for VERBAL altercations. the verbal is what he's the most used to, and i wonder if its him getting his ass most thoroughly kicked here to the point that it temporarily puts the fear of god into him even with the later gag of 'oh im fine actually' that seems to, to my anime-only up to part of s3 recollection, make him kinda drop the idea that mob should never stand his ground simply for the sake of his internal wellbeing.
ideally he wouldn't have to, but sometimes you can't run away.
there's no shame in fighting back if that's what you have to do. and maybe it might lead to some bruised feelings, internally speaking
but what would be the greater level of hurt in situations like these? some hurt feelings because you feel bad that you hurt someone else? or whatever else happens, including, potentially, death, because of what they do to you?
there's no shame in fight, or flight, or freeze, or fawn.
there's no shame in doing whatever tf it takes to do to stay alive. to stay unharmed. to protect ones self in the face of someone who means you harm.
but it's also okay to run away, and when you're a kid, it's not your responsibility either to handle the adults problems for them. with great power comes great responsibility, sure, but that doesnt mean youre auto-responsible for everybody around you. and mob needed to realize that too.
sometimes you can't get out of needing to do that, but sometimes you can.
this shit is situation by situation, and i appreciate too that mp100 has that level of nuance.
one thing i really appreciate about reigen is that the second he realizes mob acted against s1 claw in self defense of himself and his brother, he drops the 'dont point your knife at other people'. it makes sense for his character yeah and its fully rational, but what a relief that must have been for mob too who's still learning where these lines are and has so much trauma around them to boot. theres some dont fight back moments but 'its okay to run away' is great fkn advice too, along w/letting mob know that sometimes its not his responsibility to deal with shit
its one of those themes that seems to fall to the wayside hard in s2
