Not Up For Interpretation - An Essay On Nonbinary - Erasure

(Trigger Warning: Misgendering, Transphobia, Nonbinary-phobia)

If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably know this was a long time coming. I’ve made several posts about my frustrations concerning this topic and how much it hurt me just how socially accepted erasing an entire identity still is. While representation marches on and things have become better for nonbinary people as a whole, we still battle with a lot of prejudice - both intentional and unintentional.

In this essay, I want to discuss just how our identities are being erased almost daily, why that is harmful and hurtful and what we all can do to change that.

1. What Does Non-binary Mean?

Non-binary is actually an umbrella term. It includes pretty much every gender-identity that’s neither one or the other so to speak, for example, agender.

Agender means feeling detachment from the gender spectrum in general. If you’re agender, you most likely feel a distance to the concept of gender as a whole, that it doesn’t define you as a person.

There are many identities that classify under non-binary: There’s gender-fluid (you feel you have a gender, but it’s not one gender specifically and can change), demi-gender (identifying as a gender partially, but not completely) and many others.

Sometimes, multiple non-binary identities can mix and match.

Most non-binary people use they/them pronouns, but like with so many things, it varies.

Some nonbinary-people (like me) go by two pairs of pronouns. I go by both she/her and they/them, because it’s what feels most comfortable at the moment. But who knows, maybe in the future I’ll switch to they/them exclusively or expand to he/him.

There is no one defining non-binary experience. Nb-people are just as varied and different as binary people, who go by one specific gender.

There are non-binary people who choose to go solely by she/her or he/him and that’s okay too. It doesn’t make them any more or less non-binary and their identity is still valid.

If your head’s buzzing a bit by now: That’s okay. It’s a complicated topic and no one expects you to understand all of it in one chapter of one essay.

Just know this: If a person identifies as non-binary, you should respect their decision and use the pronouns they go with.

It’s extremely hurtful to refer to someone who already told you that they use they/them pronouns with she/her or he/him, or use they/them to refer to a person who uses she/her.

Think about it like using a trans-person’s deadname: It’s rude, it’s harmful and it shows complete disrespect for the person.

Non-binary people have existed for a very long time. The concept isn’t new. The idea that there are only two genders, with every other identity being an aberration to the norm, is largely a western idea, spread through colonialism.

The Native American people use “Two-Spirit” to describe someone who identifies neither as a man nor a woman. The term itself is relatively new, but the concept of a third gender is deeply rooted in many Native American cultures.

(Author’s Note: If you are not Native American, please do not use it. That’s cultural appropriation.)

In India, the existence of a third gender has always been acknowledged and there are many terms specifically for people who don’t identify with the gender that was assigned to them at birth.

2. Non-binary Representation In Media

The representation of non-binary people in mainstream media hasn’t been... great, to put it mildly.

Representation, as we all know, is important.

Not only does it give minorities a chance to see themselves in media and feel heard and acknowledged. It also normalizes them.

For example, seeing a black Disney-princess was a huge deal for many black little girls, because they could finally say there was someone there who looked like them. They could see that being white wasn’t a necessity to be a Disney princess.

Seeing a canonically LGBT+ character in a children’s show teaches kids that love is love, no matter what gender you’re attracted to. At the same time, older LGBT+ viewers will see themselves validated and heard in a movie that features on-screen LGBT+ heroes.

There’s been some huge steps in the right direction in the last few years representation-wise.

Not only do we have more LGBT+ protagonists and characters in general, we’ve also begun to question and call out harmful or bigoted portrayals of the community in media, such as “Bury Your Gays” or the “Depraved Homosexual”.

With that being said: Let’s take a look at how Non-binary representation holds up in comparison, shall we?

This is Double Trouble, from the children’s show “She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power”.

They identify as non-binary and use they/them pronouns. They’re also a slimy, duplicitous lizard-person who can change their shape at will.

Um, yeah.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Did I mention they’re also the only non-binary character in the entire show? And that they’re working with a genocidal dictator in most of the episodes they’re in?

Yikes.

Let’s look at another example.

These three (in order of appearance) are Stevonnie, Smoky Quartz and Shep. Three characters appearing in the kid’s show “Steven Universe” and it’s epilogue series “Steven Universe: Future”.

All of them identify as non-binary and use they/them as pronouns.

Stevonnie and Smoky Quartz are the result of a boy and a girl being fused together through weird alien magic.

Shep is a regular human, but they only appeared in one episode. In an epilogue series that only hardcore fans actually watched.

Well, I mean...

One out of three isn’t that bad, right?

Maybe we should pick an example from a series for older viewers.

Say hello to Doppelganger, a non-binary superhuman who goes by they/them, from the Amazon-series “The Boys”.

They’re working for a corrupt superhero-agency and use their power of shape-shifting to trick people who pose a threat to said agency into having sex with them. And then blackmail those people with footage of said sex.

....

Do I even need to say it?

If you’ve paid attention during the listing of these examples, you might have noticed a theme.

Namely that characters canonically identifying as non-binary are either

supernatural in some way, shape or form,

barely have a presence in the piece of media they’re in,

both.

Blink-and-you-miss-it-manner of representation aside, the majority of these characters fall squarely under what we call “Othering”.

“Othering” describes the practice of portraying minorities as supernatural creatures or otherwise inhuman. Or to say it bluntly: As “The Other”.

“Othering” is a pretty heinous method. Not only does it portray minorities as inherently abnormal and “different in a bad way”. It also goes directly against what representation is actually for: Normalizing.

As a general rule of thumb: If your piece of media has humans in it, but the only representation of non-white, non-straight people are explicitly inhuman... yeah, that’s bad.

So is there absolutely no positive representation for us out there?

Not quite.

As rare as human non-binary characters in media are to find, they do exist.

Here we have Bloodhound! A non-binary human hunter who uses they/them pronouns, from the game “Apex Legends”.

It’s been confirmed by the devs and the voice actress that they’re non-binary.

Nice!

These are Frisk (bottom) and Chara (top) from the game “Undertale”. While their exact gender identity hasn’t been disclosed, they both canonically use they/them pronouns, so it’s somewhere on the non-binary spectrum.

Two human children who act as the protagonist (Frisk) and antagonist (Chara), depending on how you play the game. (Interpretations vary on the antagonist/protagonist-thing, to say the least.)

Cool!

......

And, yep, that’s it.

As my little demonstration here showed, non-binary representation in media is rare. Good non-binary representation is even rarer.

Which is why those small examples of genuinely good representation are so important to the Non-binary community!

It’s hard enough to have to prove you exist. It’s even harder to prove your existence is not abnormal or unnatural.

3. So What’s The Problem?

The problem, as is the case with so many things in the world, is prejudice.

Actually, that’s not true.

There’s not a problem, there are multiple problems. And their names are prejudice, ignorance and bigotry.

Remember how I said human non-binary representation is rare?

Yeah, very often media-fans don’t help.

Let’s take for example, the aforementioned Frisk and Chara from “Undertale”.

Despite the game explicitly using they/them to refer to both characters multiple times, the majority of players somehow got it into their heads that Frisk’s and Chara’s gender was “up for interpretation”.

There is a huge amount of fan art straight-up misgendering both characters and portraying them as binary and using only he/him or she/her pronouns.

The most egregious examples are two massively popular fan-animated web shows: “Glitchtale”, by Camila Cuevas and “Underverse” by Jael Peñaloza.

Both series are very beloved by the Undertale-fanbase and even outside of it. Meaning for many people, those two shows might be their first introduction to “Undertale” and it’s two non-binary human characters.

Take a wild guess what both Camila and Jael did with Frisk and Chara.

Underverse, X-Tale IV:

(Transcript: “Frisk lied to me in the worst possible way... I... I will never forgive him.”)

Underverse, X-Tale V:

(Transcript: “I-It’s Chara... and it’s a BOY.”)

Glitchtale, My Promise:

(Transcript: (Referring to Frisk) “I’m not scared of an angry boy anymore.”)

Glitchtale, Game Over Part 1:

(Transcript: (Referring to Chara) “It’s ok little boy.”)

This... this isn’t okay.

Not only do both of these pieces of fan-art misgender two non-binary characters, the creators knew beforehand that Frisk and Chara use they/them-pronouns, but made the conscious choice to ignore that.

To be fair, in a video discussing “Underverse”, Jael said that only X-Tale Frisk and Chara, the characters you see in the Underverse-examples above, are male, while the characters Frisk and Chara from the main game remained non-binary and used they/them (time-stamp 10:34).

Still, that doesn’t erase the fact that Jael made up alternate versions of two non-binary characters specifically to turn them male. Or that, while addressing the issue, Jael was incredibly dismissive and even mocked the people who felt hurt by her turning two non-binary characters male. Jael also went on to make a fairly non-binary-phobic joke in the video, in which she equated gender identities beyond male and female to identifying as an object.

Jael (translated): “I don’t care if people say the original Frisk and Chara are male, female, helicopters, chairs, dogs or cats, buildings, clouds...”

That’s actually a very common joke among transphobes, if not to say the transphobe-joke:

“Oh, you identify as X? Well then I identify as an attack helicopter!”

If you’re trans, chances are you’ve heard this one, or a variation of it, a million times before.

I certainly have.

I didn’t laugh then and I’m not laughing now.

(Author’s note: I might be angry at both of them for what they did, but I do not, under any circumstances, support the harassment of creators. If you’re thinking about sending either Jael or Camila hate-mail - don’t. It won’t help.)

Jael’s reaction is sadly common in the Undertale fandom. Anyone speaking up against Chara’s and Frisk’s identity being erased is immediately bludgeoned with the “up for interpretation”-argument, despite that not once being the case in the game.

And even with people who do it right and portray Frisk and Chara as they/them, you’ll have dozens of commenters swarming the work with sentences among the lines of “Oh but I think Frisk is a boy/girl! And Chara is a girl/boy!”

By the way, this kind of thing only happens to Frisk and Chara.

Every other character in “Undertale” is referred to and portrayed with their proper pronouns of she/her or he/him.

But not the characters who go by they/them.

Their gender is “up for interpretation”.

Because obviously, their identity couldn’t possibly be canonically non-binary.

Sadly, Frisk and Chara are not alone in this.

Remember Bloodhound?

And how I said they’d been confirmed as non-binary and using they/them pronouns by both the creators and the voice actress?

It seems for many players, that too translated to “up for interpretation”.

(Transcript: “does it matter what they call him? He, her, it, they toaster oven, it doesn’t matter”)

(Transcript: “I’m like 90 % sure Bloodhound is a dude because he could just sound like a girl and by their age that I’m assuming looks around 10-12 because I’ve known many males who have sounded like a female when they were younger”)

(Transcript: “I don’t care it will always be a He. F*ck that non-binary bullsh*t.”)

(Transcript: “Bloodhound is clearly female.”)

(Transcript: “I’m not calling a video game character they/them”)

(Transcript: “exactly. The face was never fully shown neither was the gender so I’d say it means that the player is Bloodhound. So it’s your gender and you refer to “him” as yourself. It’s like a self insertion in my eyes.”)

So, let me get this straight:

If a character, even a player character, uses she/her or he/him, you can accept it, no questions asked.

But when a character uses they/them, suddenly their identity and gender are “up for interpretation”?

This attitude is also widely prevalent in real life.

Many languages only include pronouns for men and women, with no third option available. Non-binary people are often forced to make up their own terms, because their language doesn’t provide one.

Non-binary people often don’t fit within other people’s ideas of gender, so they get excluded altogether. Worse, non-binary people are often the victims of misgendering, denial of their identity or even straight-up violence when coming out.

People will often tell us that we look like a certain gender, so we should only use one set of gendered pronouns. Never mind that that’s not what we want. Never mind that that’s not who we are.

Non-binary people are also largely omitted from legal documentation and studies. We cannot identify as non-binary at our workplace, because using they/them pronouns is considered “unprofessional”. We don’t have our own bathrooms like men and women do. Our gender is seen as less valid than male and female, so even that basic thing is denied to us. I’ve had to use the women’s restroom my entire life, because if I go into a male restroom, I’ll be yelled at or made fun off or simply get told I took the wrong door. It’s extremely uncomfortable for me and I wish I didn’t have to do it.

And since non-binary people aren’t seen as “real transgender-people”, we often don’t receive the medical care we need. This often renders us unable to feel good within our bodies, because the treatment and help we get is wildly inadequate.

It’s especially horrible for intersex people (people who are born with sex characteristics that don’t fit solely into the male/female category) who are often forced to change their bodies to fit within the male/female gender binary.

And you better believe each of those problems is increased ten-fold for non-binary people of color.

We are ignored and dismissed as “confused”, because of who we are.

Representation is a way for Non-binary people to show the world they exist, that they’re here and that they too have stories to tell.

But how can we, when every character that represents us is either othered, barely there or gets taken away from us?

We are not “up for interpretation”.

Neither are the characters in media who share our identity.

And it’s time to stop pretending we ever were.

4. How Do We Fix It?

Well, first things first: Stop acting like we don’t exist.

And kindly stop other people from doing it too.

We are a part of the LGBT+ community and we deserve to be acknowledged, no matter what our pronouns are.

Address non-binary people with the right pronouns. Don’t argue with them about their identity, don’t comment on how much you think they look like a boy or a girl. Just accept them and be respectful.

If a non-binary person tells you they have two sets of pronouns, for example he/him and they/them, don’t just use one set of pronouns. That can come off as disingenuous. Alternate between the pronouns, don’t leave one or the other out. It’ll probably be hard at first, but if you keep it up, you’ll get used to it pretty quickly.

If you’re witnessing someone harass a non-binary person over their identity, step in and help them.

And please, don’t partake in non-binary erasure in media fandoms.

Don’t misgender non-binary characters, don’t “speculate” on what you think their gender might be. You already know their gender and it’s non-binary. It costs exactly 0 $ to be a decent human being and accept that.

Support Non-Binary people by educating yourself about them and helping to normalize and integrate their identity.

Howza bout some Father's day headcanons for Father's day, featuring the Frans and Papara kids, featuring Vivaldi, Corbel, and perhaps Banzai and Cambria?

So, I like to think that UT Frisk hid her pregnancy from Sans because she had a plan - she wanted to surprise her husband on Father’s Day with a card to give him the big news.

But Sans already knew that she was pregnant. He sensed the tiny SOUL in her stomach the moment it had formed enough to be detectable, and it took every ounce of his willpower not to burst into happy tears when he realized what that meant. However, Frisk didn’t approach him about the subject, and he knew that Frisk had to know that she was pregnant, so he decided to wait it out and let her approach him on the subject.

So when he got the card, he had to pretend that the news was a complete shock to him, but the joy he expressed was entirely genuine.

Every year, Sans always ensures that Frisk gets the entire weekend off so they can spend their time together as a family. She may be the ambassador, but Sans has some authority too and has a way of smoothing these things over. Little Vivaldi is learning his tricks too - she’s gonna be just like her dad when it comes to these sorts of things.

Now for the Underfell Frans family - Sans spends the entire day with his wife and kids, and he’s loving every second of it. He tries to see that they do something a little different each year, whether they’re taking a trip somewhere or hanging around at home, but there’s always hot dogs somewhere during the day - and lots of mustard.

Undertale’s Papara family does outdoorsy stuff, since all three of them love it. Even before Chara fell down into the Underground, her one joy in life was nature and exploration, and that hasn’t changed - she and Papyrus take their son camping, and Pap likes to show off how much his cooking has improved through the years by cooking out - even Sans has to admit that by the time his little bro is a dad himself, he’s gotten so good that Grillby might have some competition.

Papyrus in Underfell, now he tries to do traditional ‘dad’ stuff during Father’s Day, and it’s hilarious. And also more than a bit awkward because some of what he’s doing seems so forced, but instead of them finding it painful to watch, it just makes his wife and son laugh, and he’d take that over them being disappointed any day. As the years go by, he relaxes a lot more and the activities seem a lot more casual and natural.

Before the usual further rambles under the cut I want to properly explain one little detail in Asgore’s info box: Asriel being his nephew. I didn’t change this just for the sake of it! It has to do with everyone's roles and actions making sense to me and keeping certain details intact, and I'll talk about it more in Asriel's character sheet but here's the shortest way I can explain it:

Basically Asriel being alive in Underswap and still being Toriel and Asgore's son without any of them aging doesn't really make sense to me, and physical distance doesn't seem enough reason for none of them to have aged a day in 100 years, as Boss Monsters should. I've also seen (and liked) some Swap takes where Asriel instead has only a distant relation to the Dreemurrs or even none at all, but speaking purely for my Underswap it just feels kinda sad for him to have nothing to do with them.

So my middle ground for both of these points is Swap MH Asriel is their nephew instead, allowing him to have a close family bond with both Dandelion and Orchid without any of them aging, and lets him be separate enough to live his own life in Snowdin in UT Monster Kid's role. His parents are dead and about as relevant as MK’s biological parents, which is uh. not at all, but that’s just how it's gotta be.

As I've often said with Underswap MH, I don't mind if this doesn't appeal to everyone! I know it might be odd even with thought-out reasons for it, but in the end I'm still just doing what I want with my version.

anyway on with the enormous amount of extra info for these two:

Because they have no biological children (and to be clear, it's not that they can't have kids, they just didn't), Dandelion and Orchid are physically younger than their UT counterparts. Personally I don't think they were that old when they gained their Boss Monster immortality and I headcanon UT Asriel as 10 when he died, so I see UT Toriel and Asgore as being physically around their late 30s and early 40s respectively.

It took a while to figure out why Orchid would ever kill the six humans because it always felt out of character for a Swap Toriel who retains some of UT Toriel's personality. I can't see her killing anyone voluntarily at first, but UT Toriel is able to kill UT Frisk accidentally, so likewise killing the first human to fall after Swap Frisk was not intentional. She still tried to reason with every human who faced her, but being unable to convince them to stay in the Underground in peace and already having blood on her hands, was resigned to her duty.

On Dandelion's side of events, he still has UT Asgore's traits of being prone to anger in grief and somewhat cowardly about his duty, hence him still calling the declaration of war on humanity but then backing out on it. Feeling like he'd betrayed the memory of their children and knowing he'd hurt Orchid emotionally, he exiled himself to Ruins, assuming that in his absence she would call the war off again.

Orchid's reason for not using a human soul to cross the barrier (i.e. exactly what UT Toriel calls Asgore out on) is that taking the first child's life traumatised her on top of her grief in not wanting to follow the doomed footsteps of her adoptive children. As she's still Toriel she still considered doing exactly that, but wasn't emotionally capable of it and is very aware of her hypocrisy.

...basically if you think the eternal fandom slapfights over whether Toriel is just as bad as Asgore or either of them did nothing wrong are a mess, it's definitely even more complicated in Underswap MH. They both made wrong decisions in grief, but in the end both deserve mercy too.

Orchid's throne room, rather than being covered by a bed of golden flowers, features the same black tree seen in front of UT Toriel's home, with red leaves covering the floor (meanwhile the Ruins has no red leaves). Her throne sits directly in front of the tree and the room is darker, and the original game's room of coffins in New Home is nonexistent as Orchid buried the fallen humans in the throne room to show them what respect she could.

Instead of trying to destroy the Ruins' exit like UT Toriel, Dandelion leads Chara there when they ask to leave and tells them the monsters on the other side will try to kill them. He apologises and says it is his fault for that, and the least he can do is give them the choice to stay with him in safety or prove that they can survive out there, and as mentioned above they can always change their mind and come back.

Dandelion could hypothetically still do the orange/blue eye-flashing attack UT Asgore does, but doesn't because he's the tutorial boss. In Orchid's battle, the orb of her sceptre flashes orange or blue before she attacks with flames of the same colours (she'd also destroy the mercy button with a column of fire).

I spent too much time thinking about whether Orchid should still speak without contractions like UT Toriel, because speech styles are mostly swapped but it's such a Toriel thing, so... I decided her natural thoughts/spoken words still lack contractions, but she forces herself to use them fairly often to try and keep up with modern speech. Meanwhile Dandelion mostly speaks without contractions, but occasionally some slip out.

Given that I'm a Bigtime Soriel Shipper™ it's probably worth mentioning that the role equivalent of UT Sans and Toriel's friendship between Noodle and Dandelion remains platonic, primarily due to Noodle being aromantic. But Dandelion is panromantic and Noodle would definitely be his wingman if anyone took his fancy, and their bond is incredibly important to them both! They basically have one of those friendships where sometimes you just make small talk and chat about mutual interests, and sometimes you both unload your entire life's emotional baggage and support each other's mental health.

and yes because I have to give a mention to my beloved Swap Soriel: Neptune initially has no intention of telling Orchid about his feelings for her because he doesn't want to make their friendship awkward, but he ends up blurting out how much she means to him when she's feeling especially bad some time in post-pacifist. As mentioned above she doesn't feel the same at first and their friendship continues (no man has ever been as genuinely happy to be friendzoned as Neptune), but she begins to return his feelings before too long. There's actually so much more depth to their friendship I'd love to share immediately, but trust me it'll be much better in comic form ;v;

I've forgotten the flower meanings of dandelions I read while I was looking up yellow/gold flowers to name Asgore after, but most of the reason I chose that for him is because I see Asgore as part lion and he is very fine and dandy. As for Toriel, apparently purple orchids represent things like royalty, respect and dignity which sounded fitting!

I swear I absolutely will not let my current pattern of procrastinating on the next character sheets for a whole entire year continue, I want to get the last three done much quicker!! Chara and Asriel will be next :D

1: how many muses, do you think, have you had in total while on tumblr?

I’ve counted 20 blogs, deleted or otherwise, and atop that most blogs tend to feature in guest muses or secondaries that are important too. So probably upwards of 30+.

2: are there any tropes that pull you in or that you realise are reoccuring in your muses?

am big sucker for redemption arcs apparently! archex, drift, and my particular take on hux... i also love corruption instead so idk if that counts.

6: is there a muse you’d add or bring back if you didn’t have to worry about whether others are interested in them or not?

... Galvatron for bring back, b/c they got nothing. But also I’m not really all that interested in TF these days (on the case of playing them myself). Adding? No, tho iv just about abandoned @hyperspacelanes for the time being until things settle down again in the world so i can juggle any SW muse i wanna try is gonna be there idec anymore.

7: what age group, gender and ethnicity do you most often end up playing?

this is... almost unanswerable. i lean towards male muses or nonbinary, but the first may mostly be due to how female muses hardly get attention as iv noticed and it’s subconscious to avoid? idk. but age literally varies the only thing is outside of exploring in their past muses are usually listed over 18 (be they 20 or 40). Ethnicity? Lmfao, I just choose who fits the role or take what I’m given. Most of the time tho if I’ve the chance to chose they end up not being white unless it’d otherwise be a good fit since there always feels to be a lack of diversity on screens. :3c

8: who is your latest muse? can be someone you’re only considering / not planning to play at all, but is tempting you.

‘characters hated on or in a redemption arc or both’??? no. i think the only thing that’s changed is that im more likely to be open about lgbtq+ headcanons and ideas for my muses than i was when much younger but its because now i dont give a shit if anyone cares because if someones gonna be upset that’s their problem

14: if you see that a friend of yours has just made a blog for a muse you were planning to play, will you still make the blog?

depends on the friend, prolly. and why i wanted to make the blog. like sometimes i wanna make a chara solely because i love them and want them around even if iv to be the one playing them... sometimes i just genuinely have muse. ill sit back and see what happens, but if the muse doesnt go away?? i make the blog. iv no impulse control

In light of tumblr actually committing suicide, I’m feeling nostalgic and would like to tell you all about my first real online community experience. Because everybody always has their MySpace or LiveJournal stories... and I was never on either of those.

I want to tell you about a site that is called Animexx. And... it changed a lot since I was really active on it and it was by far never perfect, but at its skeletal structure, it’s something I am still seeking out and I genuinely don’t understand why such a type of site doesn’t exist in a broader, English context. Let me rephrase that to make it clearer: It’s a German site... well... there seems to be a .com version that’s actually English, but somehow everything still shows up in German so I don’t know about that. And, as the name might suggest, it is primarily focused on anime/manga/Jpop.

So, this is less of a recommendation and more of a... pitch of my dream online-experience, based on how that site worked, with some side-notes on upgrades. But, at its core, it’s essentially a mixture of DeviantArt, Fanfiction.Net, tumblr and then some more.

(I’ll be talking in past-tense because I haven’t really been on the site in 10 years so I genuinely don’t know what changed and what is still the same.)

Fanworks

Obviously. Only that the site had different partitions for different types of fanworks. Not like tumblr where everything is just one endless pit that you get lost in.

You had fanarts, that were sorted by TV show/movie/book/band/whatever so you could actually go and properly look for them. It’s one of the things I hate about DeviantArt; that you don’t have specific categories to post fanarts under in the same way you’d do it with fics on FFNet/AO3 so you can browse specifically for them. In my ideal world, we would also add a tagging-function like on AO3 for it, including things such as pairing tags and character tags so you could actually find shit easier.

You had fanfiction. WITH a tagging function - just like on AO3. AND you had ONE feature that I AM STILL DEARLY MISSING. Seriously, both FFNet and AO3 make me bemoan the loss of the Character Descriptions.

See, you’d click on the fic and firstly be presented with the fic’s main page. A list of all chapters, the tags, the summary and the stats. And above it are tags.

You can (still, as proven by fresh and new screenshot) upload character profiles, including a picture of the character and a chart with whatever information you want to give - name/age/whatever. Which, particularly in AUs is immensely practical. “Wait what magical creature was that again?”.

And not just that. The tab right next to “Characters”? “Illustrations”. Since the site itself hosts fanarts too, you could directly mark the art you upload as an illutration to a specific fic and they’d then be linked to connect with each other.

Now, granted, their fanfiction system is not perfect - there are a lot of rules/censoring. But this very system? The system of including additional character information and allowing a direct link between a fic and its illustrations? That is perfect. And I miss it very dearly.

And fanfiction and fanarts aren’t where fanworks end. It also had its own doujinshi - comic - site. Because that is also a thing I hate on DeviantArt. If you’re lucky, someone posting a comic will also include a link to the last page in the description. No. On here, comics worked just like fanfiction in that you have it all together. They too are separated into chapters, if the author so pleases, and you can just subscribe to a comic like you’d do to a fanfiction. Seriously, how has this function not reached DeviantArt yet...? This site has had it for literal eighteen years now...

Photos also had their separate sub-site, like cosplay photos and such.

Now, nowadays and with my experience here on tumblr, on an ideal website we would also add a separate GIF-site to it.

Community

For one, your profile is way more elaborate than on... any other site I’ve seen. Aside from many options on what to put on it - like multiple profile pics, multiple tabs on your biography (mostly used to linking to other things... that is actually why my FFNet profile looks the way it does, because that’s how I used to keep it in the olden days, only that I would actually be able to separate the timeline and the updating schedule onto different tags for easier access...).

You also had a guestbook, much like how you can publically comment on people’s profiles on DeviantArt.

It also had a direct link to your personal blog. Which, you don’t have to use obviously, but yeah. There’s also a blogging function.

Of course it also has a private messaging function. Only that it’s actually a good and proper one. I love that FFNet has one, but it sucks because it’s just all clogging up your inbox. No, this site has one that works essentially like your average e-mail account; you can create folders and sort your fucking mail like a civilized person.

Additonally to the private messaging function, there is also a chat on here.

There is also an RPG community. Not like on tumblr where just... everything is everywhere and whatever. It’s neatly separated, just like the fics and fanarts and comics and photos. Everything has its place. Seriously, why are American sites so fucking unorganized, it drives me crazy.

Now, the best part about the community were the Circles. That’s what they were called. They’re forums, really. Clubs, kinda.

You could start one about... whatever. Like, dedicated to a particular ship. And you, as the admin, could then proceed however you want. Public? Or only after applying, meaning that the admin had to let you in. Especially after meeting the phenomenon of antis, I miss this dearly, because... just imagining having a Circle for fans of your “problematic fave” and moderating who gets in - meaning only letting in actual fans of the character - so they can safely post about them there.

Each Circle included multiple forums, however many you want. Say, one generally talking about the ship, one about that chara, one about the other, another about gift exchanges, fic recommendations, or literally whatever you want.

And a Circle could directly link to its members’ fanfiction and fanarts - or well those relevant for the Circle at hand.

Those were really where the sense of community came from. You had your... yeah, your safe space to talk about whatever you loved with other people who also love it. No risk of publically posting about your fave and some dumbass hijacking the post or bullying you about it. You just had your forums inside the Circle and got to talk about what you love.

There is much more that the site had to offer - a direct shop where fanartists could sell merch and printed versions of their comics, an event page where you could easily find fan-events near you (or far away from you, depending on what you’re looking for), heck it even doubled as a dating site - but that just to sum up what I really miss about this site and how it worked.

And I just... I genuinely don’t understand why such a thing, in this day and age of fandom being so huge, doesn’t exist on a broader scale, in a mainly English-speaking context. A site that seamlessly unites the different aspects of fandom - fanarts, fanfiction, fan-comics, community and blogging.

Both DeviantArt and tumblr are a garbage mess, let’s be very clear on that, because they allow absolutely no way of properly and easily accessing only fanworks to one specific fandom. It’s not like sorting into fandoms is a new thing; fanfiction does it even on fucking Fanfiction.Net so why does it seem so wild for non-fanfiction sites to also include such a function...? Not to mention, when talking about those two examples, a proper and neat separation of the different types of fanworks. Yes, a rudimentary system exists, but... not a clear-cut and simple one, for some reason.

For me, who I come from a site that united all sides of fandom so easily and for free, it has always been absolutely beyond me that you need different accounts on different sites for your different fandom-experience - tumblr for blogging, DeviantArt for a half-way good system on fanarts, AO3/FFNet for fanfiction (and yes, I know many just post everything on tumblr, but with how it is indistinguishable when it comes to looking for specific things, this is clearly not what tumblr was really meant to do...).

I just want... one site to unite them all but also do it systematically and not in one hot-mess pile of EVERYTHING where you have to entirely rely on luck and tags, instead of sub-categories of a) types of fanwork and b) fandoms. Seriously, it can’t be that hard and it has literally been around for eighteen years now in Germany. Is it just because we Germans like to be organized, or what...?

Undertale!

The first character I first fell in love with: Sans! It was his boss fight that first convinced me to start digging into this game. In fact, my very first Undertale post is about what an interesting take on player meta it is, and how badass and heroic Sans was in facing you the way he did. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Proooobably Alphys? I tend to gravitate away from characters that are particularly Like Me and whoo boy Alphys is a lot like me, but especially after writing her into a lot of “Scorched Scraps and Tatters” and writing some Alphyne drabbles and also yelling “I am a trash can, not a trash can’t!” when out on jogs, she grew on me a lot. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Asriel and, by extension, Flowey. He’s cute, and all, and his boss battle is great, but he doesn’t fill me full of feels the way he does for so many other people. I like him for what he is in the game but I’m not massively driven on to write fic about him or fic where he’s saved - in fact, the one piece of fic I wrote that featured Asriel is prooooobably the single most controversial thing I’ve ever written. The character I love that everyone else hates: Gotta go with Chara. I started out hating/fearing them the way a lot of the fandom seems to, but brilliant meta and RP on the part of @thethrillof and @goodbyenorthernlights talked me around to the fact that ultimately they’re a pawn in events as much as Frisk is. Chara is a product of your creation, not anything inherently evil.The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Nobody! I genuinely love all these dorks and I still do. I have only ever grown to love them more, not less. The character I would totally smooch: Undyne I know you have a girlfriend and I love her too but also please step on me. The character I’d want to be like: Frisk! The bravery to face all kinds of danger and respond to it by flirting and making friends. And puzzle skills. They have admirable puzzle skills. The character I’d slap: Aaron. I’m with Temmie, his muscles are gross. Also, maybe that NPC who goes “what’s a star? Can you eat it? Can you kill it? Are you a star?” Because every time I read that dialogue I feel like they’re sizing me up to jump me and slapping them could buy me time to flee. A pairing that I love: Sans/Grillby forever, motherfuckers. The flame of that ship burns forever in my heart.A pairing that I despise: I know Sans/Frisk is a thing and I genuinely don’t judge those who ship it but also it will be my forever NOTP.

I saw some people on twitter say we could get grand percy (osaka ryota next in granblue tv) and with the constant dread of playable lamorak dropping with the event my spark is shaking in fear tbh

omg congratz on having a full spark saved!!!! this is already a good step in the right direction!

but yeah omg, with Ryoosaka in the next gbftv i had the same reaction, yelling about Grand Percival. Like, Percival is the logical next 4kishi to be getting an unit: since the last time Percival had an unit, we had, in this order, Gawain, Florence, Aglovale, Siegfried, Arthur, Vane, Lancelot, Sophia and Sylph. Arthur made sense with the plot of the event, and while we can expect a Mordred unit one day, i doubt we'll get it in one that doesn't focus on him (and would make more sense if it happens on an event featuring Merlin front and center/once stuff about Mordred's past identity are more revealed).

Gawain/Florence/Sophia/Sylph are also incredible to point out considering all of them were otherwise very old characters who hadn't had any moment to shine ever since their introductions per se, so it means even chara who were more obscure to the saga have more recent entries than the latest Percival.

Percival's last unit is from Early 2020, which was to prepare Savior of Dalmore anyway, so, he's the one character of the Kishi saga who's latest unit is "older" than any of the newest unit. By all account, he should be getting a new unit soon or at the very least, be the next one to get an unit.

With the fact they're starting to roll in Grand units for the Kishi, which Lancelot's FE set up to be about introspection and character development to get to face the sins of the past in order to take in the new threat, Percival getting a Grand would make sense as soon as Lamorak's evil intentions are revealed to him since in which case he would have to face the same type of dilema Lancelot did in his FE. With the Event seemingly preparing to do just that, it really feels like this is the direction it's going to take.

(i've legit fought with friend all year bc they kept trying to taunt me like "holiday!Percival!" "vday!Percival!" "Yukata!Percival!" for the past year or so and ever since the Grand kishi were announced i've just been hitting them with a broom like "NO!!!! DEVELOPMENT. GRAND TIME." so i'm feeling strongly about it)

So i genuinely expect Grand!Percival now because it's the perfect timing. Also we haven't had Fire GWs yet, here's how Percival is going to fix Fire challenge-

But yeah, it is, also, a good timing to release Lamorak. Depends just how much they would want to space it out (Aglovale only got his first unit a few years after BFAF, to give the time for his redemption to settle in a little) or if they know the Wales Bros Stans will reunite them at all cost and they will roll Lamorak as soon as possible.

By all account, it'd make sense if both Grand!Percival and Lamorak get released at the same time.

that said apparently, Granblue kinda have the pattern to not want to release two kishi-event related unit at the same time? or so i heard?

like last year we got Arthur (event related) and Narmaya's girlfriend on that banner which was very odd in a way. Savior of Dalmore had Gawain and Flo which were both event chara but i remember back then people mentioning it was odd considering the pattern ?

There's a lot to say about it (mainly how it's a balance in fanservice due to the weird preconception about the kishi saga but god i don't want to get into it now) but so the question is would they still go for it knowing that Lamorak is probably a good thing to bet on? Like if it's all about fanservice balance the fact we barely had any male unit this summer except for Eustace and whatever the hell Belial was, compared especially to the previous year, perhaps it's to prepare a "*sends a kiss in the sky* this is for the men appreciator" banner.

Personally i want both of them and am safe for them dLKFJDFL i have sparks and sierotix ready so i'll spark if Percival or Lamorak get an unit, and if the two of them do and i don't get lucky with the spark, i'll drag the other one home with the sierotix. so at least i'm safe there.

But........ for people with only a spark this is going to be painful 😭😭

sorry i got a little unhinged, glad to see that despite not having talked about it for a while this saga and those charas still make me rambly. (a win for icha a loss for everyone else)

but. but yeah.

and i wish you all the luck in the world 😭 hopefully both of them ends up being good boys then. we gotta hope.

EMPATHEOREM NOTES

First of all, there’s a lot of information over on (Asriel’s about page) so go check that out! A starter call will come later, but if anyone wants to swap, dm me! I’ll send you icons if we swap!

Physical Features & Ailments

asriel has white fur, usually wears a striped sweater, and he has a locket that is almost always tucked under his sweater and rests against his chest. there’s a scar on the left side of his chest, it’s missing some fur and occasionally hurts. there’s also a scar on his back from being stabbed. he has self-harm scars on both arms, but they’re mostly covered by fur, and you wouldn’t see them unless you went looking for them. his arms have less fur there because of the scar tissue. for more details on build, check his about page.

asriel doesn’t have a functioning soul, which monsters kind of need, considering how it’s the very culmination of their being. he’s also going through worse symptoms than usual right now. on a physical level, this means your muse may experience fatigue and general weakness, a hollowness in their chest, and they might occasionally shed dust or have a dusty feeling on their fur. you expect a kid full of life and energy? just kidding, he actually just wants to be in bed most of the time.

he can cast up to five fireballs a day, but it only really works sometimes.

Memories

oh boy. here we go. asriel has a lot of memories. like, a lot. they can run together and some of them are much hazier than others due to the nature of his existence.

a lot of them are violent, from his eyes, killing innocent monsters, laughing. the first time he woke up in the garden and called out for his parents, only to find asgore, broken and alone. finding his mother, and being unable to love her. there are some that haunt him more than others. being killed by sans multiple times over and being unable to beat him is one of them. the photoshop flowey fight is one that comes up a lot, with the sight of frisk’s body before reloading being quite gruesome. being killed by chara in a genocide run. finding the belongings of the fallen children and killing his mother for the first time. feeling the emptiness of the underground near the end of one of his runs, absolutely covered in dust. collecting buttercups for chara, holding their hand as they died and absorbing their soul. watching them die a slow and horrible death. refusing to kill the villagers and ultimately adopting his “kill or be killed” beliefs. his worst memories can be distressing, to say the least.

there are good ones too, and some from the last city. expect memories before the death of him and chara, playing with them, getting picked on by them, hugging his mother and running around taking videos. coloring at the table. he was a pacifist at first, so there are some memories of playing the good guy in the underground there, but none of him being attached to anyone or feeling any joy in the process. in the last city, you may find memories of him frequenting the garden he tended to in zeta. honestly i have memory loss and i can’t remember much from his interactions in citta but feel free to go through his old blog (here) if you’re committed enough. tw for, uh, citta stuff on the first page.

feel free to message me if you want to know my personal headcanons or take on his memories from a specific experience, or want to know more of his memories in general. his is absolutely just a fraction of what can be remembered.

Personality/Status Changes

stick around long enough and expect flashbacks. asriel has c-ptsd, so keep this in mind. things like vines, blood, and empty hallways may cause a panic response. because (this) is still going on with asriel, you may start to lack compassion. asriel has a hard time understanding how time works and moves. expect withdrawal-like symptoms and genuinely cravings for what you might consider an adrenaline rush. some violent intrusive thoughts might come about.

overall, he’s a goofball, you might find yourself laughing at stupid jokes a lot more than you did before. when he’s not in an awful state, he’s loving and affectionate, but carries a tremendous amount of guilt. he’s constantly checking himself and his tone, and has to make an effort to maintain relationships. interacting with others isn’t his strong suit. asriel stims, and you may suddenly realize that you’re rocking or flapping your arms or chewing on your sweater. you suddenly have an extensive knowledge on snail facts and severely lack in creativity when naming things.

PredatorShift- Chapter 4

First

Chapter 4- Questions and Games

Frisk paused in shock. Asriel hugged himself and kept his gaze off of Chara. Chara soon lowered their sleeve with a frown. They grabbed the two substitute pills silently before they approached Asriel. They placed their free hand on Asriel’s shoulder, “You have to eat them.” Asriel continued to avoid Chara’s gaze, “But-“ Chara’s voice became more gentle as their hand moved to Asriel’s ear, “Rei, you must keep up your strength. Please. I need you to take this… besides…” Chara turned Asriel’s head towards Frisk, “You would not want to risk hurting our guest… would you?” Asriel lowered his head before he sighed deeply, “No… I don’t want to hurt them.” Chara smiled before they gently placed the pills into Asriel’s hand, “Good.” Asriel quickly ate the pills just as Chara pulled a knitted, star-patterned blanket over his lap. Chara spoke, “Relax here, Frisk and I will make dinner.” Frisk raised a brow, “I can’t cook that well…” Chara smirked, “Then I will help you.” Chara beckoned Frisk to follow, “Come. I will even let you choose what to eat.”

Frisk followed Chara into the kitchen silently. Frisk frowned as they looked around the still dark kitchen, “What are we gonna do about the ligh-“ Frisk let out a small gasp and paused. They felt something at their neck. They looked down to see a red knife had materialized at their throat, ready to cut into it. They froze as they felt a hand on their right shoulder. Out of the corner of their eye, they saw Chara’s eyes aglow. Chara approached Frisk’s ear and whispered in a threatening tone, “Do not make a sound and listen to me. Very. Carefully.” Frisk gulped and shook slightly before Chara continued, “Rei is the only good thing that has happened to me in this hellhole. He means everything to me. If you hurt him in any way.” Chara tightened their grip on Frisk’s shoulder, which caused Frisk to wince. Chara’s tone became even more menacing as they continued, “The monsters will be the least of your worries in this prison. I will give you the slow, agonizing death you deserve.” A few tears escaped Frisk’s eyes. The blade disappeared from Frisk’s neck before Chara stepped in front of Frisk, their eyes still aglow. Chara gave Frisk an unsettling smile as they spoke only one word, “U N D E R S T O O D?” Frisk gave a few silent nods as they continued to quake in fear. Chara’s eyes stopped their glow and they smirked, “I am glad we understand each other, mirror.” Chara then reached into a nearby cabinet and found a light bulb, ready to be used. Nearby the two humans was a stepladder, still standing. Chara climbed the ladder and quickly changed the light bulb. The kitchen lit up immediately to reveal a small but tidy kitchen. Cabinets and counters line the left and right side of the kitchen. The back of the kitchen held a large fridge and a sink. Chara opened the fridge, “Snails are a large part of the diet down here. Otherwise, a human’s diet in the underground is entirely vegetarian.” Frisk hugged themselves slightly, still cautious of Chara. Their voice was quiet, “I don’t mind… snails,” Chara beckoned Frisk over to the fridge, “Come here. Since you are willing to not hurt Rei, I will still let you choose what we eat tonight.”

Frisk placed the last of three bowls on the table in the living room. Each bowl was accompanied by a glass of water and a fork. Asriel had curled up on the couch and had fallen asleep. Chara gently shook Asriel awake. They spoke kindly as they shook him, “Rei, wake up. Dinner is ready.” Asriel groaned and rubbed his eyes before he opened them. He frowned, “I… fell asleep, again?” Chara helped Asriel to a sitting position on the couch. They spoke with a smile, “It must have been all the cleaning you have done today.” Asriel smiled, “Hehe, you noticed?” Chara cradled Asriel’s cheek with one hand, “Of course I noticed, but thank you for not bothering the bags of dust this time.” Asriel frowned, “I… don’t want to touch them… anymore.” Chara pulled away, “One day, you will not have to.” Chara sat on the couch next to him, “For now, we must eat.” Chara patted the remaining area of the couch and looked at Frisk, “Come. Sit here, mirror.” Asriel raised a brow before he pulled the bowl in front of him close, “Why do you keep calling them ‘mirror’?” Chara pointed between themselves and Frisk as Frisk sat down on the couch, “Our faces look similar.” Asriel’s eyes quickly shifted between Chara and Frisk for a moment before his eyes widened slightly, “You’re right! I mean, there’s a bunch of differences, but you two do look similar!”

Frisk took a light glance at Chara in the light of the house. They saw similarities, but they also saw the differences they had seen when they met Chara. Asriel then spoke nervously, “Do… all human look this similar?” Chara shook their head lightly, “No. The fact a human with so many similar features to myself has fallen down here is uncanny.” “Uncanny?” Chara reached for their bowl and fork, “It means something is so familiar that it becomes unsettling.” Asriel grabbed his own bowl and crooked a brow, “The stew smells a little different. Frisk, did you choose the vegetables?” Frisk nodded, “I…. I don’t like celery… so we added more carrots.” Asriel smiled, “That’s okay.” Chara had already begun eating, “You two should start eating. It will get cold.”

The conversation paused for a few moments as Asriel and Frisk began to eat their own bowls of stew. Frisk spoke up, “Can I ask a few more questions?” Chara spoke calmly, “What is it?” Frisk paused, unsure which question to ask first, “Where do I go to get out of the underground?” Chara smirked and gave a light chuckle, “If one could leave the underground, the only exit would be on the other side. In the castle.” Frisk raised a brow, “Castle?” Chara swept their hand lightly over the table, “Let us say this table is the underground.” Chara pointed to where Asriel’s bowl was, “And let us say we are about here.” Frisk nodded, “Okay…” Chara ran their finger on the table, “There is still much of the underground left to traverse. Waterfall. Hotland. The Core. And finally…” Chara motioned to the area above Frisk’s bowl near the other edge of the table, “New Home, where most of the monster population resides. The castle as well.” Frisk pointed to the area Chara pointed to last, “And it’s in the castle?” Chara returned their hand to their side, “Yes, within the deepest confines of the castle. The throne room.” “So… the king of all monsters guards it?” Chara chuckled, “Saying he is ‘guarding’ it would be charitable phrasing. The only section of the barrier that one could feasibly walk through happens to be where his throne room is.” “What kind of monster is he? Have you met him?” Chara gave Frisk a slightly unnerving smile, “If I met him, I would be in his stomach right now.” Frisk backed to the edge of the couch and shook. Chara calmed their expression and spoke firmly, “You would meet that same fate, should he find you.” Frisk returned to their seat and begged, “How do I avoid him?” “You stay on guard, assume he’s behind every corner. But most of all… you must avoid blue lights.” Frisk’s eyes widened, “Because… he has... a glowing blue eye…” Chara raised a brow for a moment before they calmed it and spoke, “I see. The monster in the ruins told you.” Frisk nodded, “Papyrus… he said that if I see one glowing, blue eye…. it’s… already too late.” Chara nodded, “Because if that eye should fall on you, you will die.”

Asriel put a hand on Chara’s shoulder, slightly dispelling the conversation, “Um… Chara… can we talk about something else?” Chara looked over at Asriel with a smile, “Too much? Sorry, but I must speak the truth if our new friend wants to survive in here.” Asriel frowned, “I… I think that’s enough…they know where to go and what to avoid…” Asriel held Chara’s sleeve and shook, “That… should be enough… right?” Chara patted Asriel’s head, “Alright. We will change the topic. What would you like to talk about?” Asriel scratched his head, “Um… where’s Frisk going to sleep tonight?” Chara spoke bluntly, “They will sleep here on the couch.” Asriel huffed, “But two of us could fit on a bed!” Chara was about to retort but hesitated. They then gave Asriel a curt smile, “I see. If you had missed cuddling with me, you should have just told me.” Asriel’s white fur turned pink, his entire face flushed. He stammered over his words, “W-well… I mean, yeah, but you haven’t had many…. Nightmares lately…” Chara’s smile became genuine, “Well, then we’ll sleep in your bed tonight, and Frisk will sleep in mine. Is that agreeable?” Asriel calmed down, “Yeah! That okay with you, Frisk?” Frisk gave a calm nod. Chara spoke, “Then it is agreed.”

Frisk then spoke curiously, “Where are we going? You said we’d rest here until the dogs fall asleep.” Chara spoke plainly, “To the closest safe place in the underground to the barrier. From there…. We can plan how to get to the barrier.” Asriel perked up, “You’re going to the lab, again?” Chara hesitated, “Yes…” Asriel smiled, “Can I come with you this time? I wanna see dad!” Chara nodded, “Sure, Rei.” Asriel lightly pulled his shirt forward; from under it, he revealed a necklace on a golden chain. The necklace housed a golden locket in the shape of an upside-down heart; the shape of a monster’s soul. Frisk could see one side of the locket had an inscription etched into it, “Best Friends Forever”. Asriel spoke, “Promise you won’t get up early and leave me here this time?” Chara reached under their white shirt to reveal an identical locket. Frisk could see a ‘C’ engraving on the side they were looking at. Chara held their locket close to Asriel’s, “Asriel, I promise.” Asriel smiled, “Thanks, Chara.”

Chara and Asriel let their lockets hang outside their clothes. Asriel stood up and stretched, “I feel better already. Let me wash the dishes!” Asriel stood from the couch and collected everyone’s now empty bowls and forks. He reached to grab one of the empty water glasses before Chara put their hand on the glass, “Do not take more than you can carry.” Asriel giggled before he stacked the three bowls and put the forks into them. He then put one glass inside the bowls and held the two glasses with his other hand, “The God of Hyperdeath can handle carrying a few dishes!” Frisk raised a confused brow, “Huh?” Chara gently pushed the table away from the couch, “It is a little game we play to pass the time. He is a monster-turned-god, and I am the only human determined enough to stand against him.” Chara then gave a playful smirk as they flopped back on the couch, next to Frisk, “But with two humans here, we may just be able to tip the balance in my favor.” Asriel chuckled lightly, “Frisk can try!” Chara wrapped an arm over Frisk’s shoulder and gave them a wink, “What do you say, mirror? Care to play along? It will only consist of some board and card games since we cannot go outside.” Frisk stiffened at first, unsure what Chara would do. Frisk then relaxed slightly and decided playing along would be for the best. They spoke, “Sure, what are we playing?” Chara sighed, “Unfortunately, mirror, it is the God of Hyperdeath’s turn to choose our arenas.” Asriel gave a boisterous laugh from the kitchen, “What god would I be if I did not give this new human a chance? I grant you the mercy of choosing our three games!” Chara patted Frisk’s shoulder, “And you have already given us a great advantage! The games are in the cabinet over there.”

Chara pointed to a short but wide cabinet to the left of the couch, in front of the stairs. Frisk opened the cabinet doors to reveal tall, messy stacks of various board games. Most of the boxes were warped, worn, or broken from water damage. In the corner, Frisk could see four sets of normal playing cards. Frisk grabbed one of the decks and spoke, “Do you know how to play ‘I Doubt It’?” Chara raised a brow, “Maybe under a different name. What are the rules?” Frisk calmly explained, “Well, we split the deck evenly, and then we decide who goes first. The person who goes first is supposed to put an ace face down and we put cards face down and call out how many of what number. Someone can say ‘I doubt it’ if they think the person is lying about how many that person put down. If they were lying, they take the deck, if they were telling the truth, the other person takes the deck.” Chara nodded, “And the game ends when someone no longer has any cards. We have played this game before. We called it ‘Bluff’. Is that the first game you want to play?” Frisk blushed, “It’s one of the few card games I know….” “That does not answer the question. Do you choose Bluff as our first game against the God of Hyperdeath?” “Y-yeah.” Chara turned their head towards the kitchen and shouted, “Hear that, Rei?” Asriel whined, “Chara! I told you not to call me that when playing!” Chara let out a mirthful chuckle, “Oops. Must have slipped my mind.” Asriel huffed, “Liar.” Chara smirked, “Guilty. Once again the God of Hyperdeath outwits me.” Asriel called out boastfully, “That’s right!” Frisk heard dishes settle calmly on the countertop before Asriel rushed back into the living room. He put his left hand on his hip before he pointed towards Chara and Frisk sharply. He spoke out in boasting, “You may be two now, but the God of Hyperdeath will endure over this challenge easily! Go ahead and shuffle the deck! I’m ready for your challenge!”

Asriel called out, “I win! Finally, the God of Hyperdeath destroys you!” Asriel gave a boastful laugh as Chara gave Asriel the last of their Monopoly money Chara smirked, “You have won this battle, but as I’ve said before, you’ve lost the war.” Asriel froze for a second before he spoke hesitantly, “Y-yeah! B-but if you count all our battles this week, then I’m still in the lead!” Chara raised a brow, “But I’ve been winning the year thus far.” Asriel huffed, “Gee, you’re right!” He smirked, “You’re still quite the opponent, human, but fear not! I will continue to win and overcome you!”

Frisk yawned, causing Asriel to snap back to reality. He relaxed and smiled, “You’re tired, Frisk?” Frisk nodded, “Yeah.” Chara mused dryly, “It has been a long game.” Asriel yawned and rubbed his eyes, “Now I’m yawning, too.” Chara smiled as they stood from the couch, “Come, let us get you into bed. And you are still in your pajamas,” Asriel puffed his cheeks, “They’re comfy, and I don’t leave the house much.” Chara extended their hand to help Asriel up, “You will tomorrow.” Asriel took Chara’s hand and nodded, “Yep!”

The three made their way upstairs. Chara opened the first door but pointed down the hall, “My room is over there. Do not sleep with your dust-covered clothes on. I will be there in a minute for my pajamas.” Asriel smiled as he went through the door, “It’s okay, Chara, you can’t really tuck me in without being in bed with me.” Chara shrugged, “Alright, I’ll be a minute then.” Asriel closed his door while Chara and Frisk went to Chara’s room. The room was cluttered with golden flowers, except on the bed. Bits of dust covered the red carpeting, giving the carpet a sparkle. Copies of Chara’s shirts and jackets were thrown into two piles, some in decent condition, the other torn almost to shreds. On the dresser was a watering can, more flowers, and a couple extra knives. Chara glared at Frisk, “Mirror, we may both be human, but I still prefer to change alone. Wait outside.” Frisk backed away nervously and closed the door. After a minute, Chara exited the room in simple green, long sleeved pajamas. Chara continued to glare at Frisk, “Not a single thing except the bed is to be touched. Understand?” Frisk nodded silently before Chara relaxed slightly, but still kept a threatening gaze, “Good. You will change back into those clothes tomorrow. Now go to sleep.”

Frisk entered the room quickly and sighed. They stood there in the center of the room for a few moments before they changed out of their clothes and went to sleep in Chara’s bed. Meanwhile, Chara went downstairs and waited a moment before they pulled a flip phone they had hidden in a fold of their pajamas. They quickly dialed a number from memory and waited a few moments before they spoke quietly, “It’s me.” They paused, “Yes.” Another pause, “Do not worry. I am bringing them to you tomorrow. I'm feeling something sad so idk something like he was in a bad accident and now he's in a coma and he has been for a while (a couple of years) and you visit him every day but now you're wondering if you should move on and idk... Caution: really sad and a lot of internal conversations. I am not a nurse/doctor/or someone who works in the medical field so if I got some things wrong, please bear with me. :) Enjoy!*

The steady beep, beep, beep of the heart monitor that was once a solace has now become something of a death sentence you can no longer ignore. Behind you, the tv is playing the Stars-Avs game, Razor’s voice booming and lively. How they managed to get the Stars games in British Columbia, you still don’t know but you’re thankful nonetheless.

Just as the Stars’ goal horn sounded, with Jordie assisting on a Tyler Seguin goal, his mom came up behind you, reaching out to comb Jamie’s hair back, “he’s doing better today,” she said, voice so quiet that you had to strain your ear to hear her. It’s as if she’s scared to be too loud.

“His levels are going up,” she continued, not really caring if you were listening or not, “his brain activity is getting better too.”

You smiled at her, gently squeezing her arm in the process, “how are you?”

If this is finally taking a toll on you, you just can’t begin to imagine what his mom feels right now.

“Eh,” she shrugged, her smile not quite reaching her eyes, “no news will always be good news, right?”

You nodded, “right.”

She walked over to the corner chair, where she always sits, “how about you?”

You smiled genuinely at her, “you’re the strongest woman I know,” you told her instead of answering her question, “I’m not sure if I can be as strong as you,” you told her honestly. The moment she understood what you were saying, a sad shadow passed her face before she schooled her features.

“You’ve already done enough,” she told you, voice cracking.

You smiled and nodded at her before sitting on the edge of the bed. You looked down to study Jamie. He’s lost a lot of muscle now since the accident nine months ago. If you put your arm against his, you’re pretty sure your arm is bigger now. Every few weeks, a barber comes in to cut his hair but it’s not the sleeked back style you’ve grown to love anymore. Now, it’s kept short and clean, like a military cut. How fitting, though, because military people are fighters and, if the last nine months are anything to go by, Jamie sure knows how to fight hard.

His right hand is bloated from water retention so you got it and started to massage his fingers, “hey Jem,” you whispered, “let’s just get you through today, eh?” you told him, just like how you’ve told him every day since that night he was checked really hard that he almost flew, headfirst, into the stanchion. You always gave him a hard time for not wearing a visor – “it obscures my vision and I feel claustrophobic,” he said – because you were always so scared he’d get a puck to the face or high stick. Then, the accident happened and you realized that if he had a visor, it might have broken and stabbed him in the eye. For once in your life, you were thankful he wasn’t wearing one.

The first few days after the accident, you only ever did three things: cry, tell him to wake up already, and replay how it happened.

You’ve seen what happened to Max Pacioretty when Chara hit him but the one that happened to Jamie was a million times worse. He didn’t just hit the stanchion head first but he also hit his neck and back on the barrier when he was going down.

Freak accidents happen in hockey and it happened to Jamie. Oh well.

How can it have already been nine months since the last time you heard his voice?

Your phone was already ringing before you even walked out of the airport, “yeah, yeah, I’m here. I’m gonna make the game,” you told Jamie, laughing.

“I was just making sure,” he said, “I really just want you here tonight.”

“Jem,” you started to say, “it’s February and it’s just a regular season game,” you reminded, “why is this suddenly more important?”

You imagined him shrugging, “it just it,” he chuckled, “where are you?”

“Airport.”

“Want me to pick you up?”

“What?” you laughed, “as if you can, it’s fifty minutes to puck drop,” you said, “you need to go warm up.”

“I know, I know,” he harrumphed, “come here already, I can’t wait to see you.”

“See you soon,” you said as you hailed a cab, “love you.”

“Love you too,” he smiled.

That was the last time you talked to him. You don’t believe in premonitions and stuff but he was adamant that you fly home to Dallas earlier than planned because he didn’t want you to miss his game. As it turned out, it was all for good reason because halfway through the third period, he was rushed out of the arena, unconscious and barely breathing.

Then it dawned on you, how can you be tired of waiting for him to wake up if he’s not even tired of fighting yet? You love him and even though sometimes you question yourself and you feel like maybe you’re just wasting time away caring for him… this is Jamie Benn.

And if you have to spend the rest of your life coming to his parents’ house every day to give unconscious him updates about hockey and your work, then you would do it. It’s Jamie and you want nothing but to spend the rest of your life with him.

You looked down on his sleeping form before kissing the top of his head, “I’m here Jem,” you whispered, “I’m where I’m supposed to be.”

21. Have you ever followed someone because you felt like you had to, not because you wanted to?

yep, mainly instances of like. i write a lot with someone they also write with, and they followed my blog--but i felt like it would be a slight to the mutual person we both know if i didn't follow back? in these instances it's not even that i dislike the person or smth, it's just someone i never or only rarely interact with so it ends up being one of those mutuals where they're just There and i'm left wondering why they followed in the first place,,,,, but i don't want to be rude and softblock or smth since it goes back to not having any issue with the person themselves

22. What would make you block someone?

i have a habit of being v liberal with the block feature, esp on this site, so as soon as someone annoys me enough i just block--but it's generally instances of too much godmodding, being gross, or generally just being rude. in the case of godmodding i do try to at least mention it to the person before immediately sorting to it, esp if i get the impression they're not rly intending to do it, but if communication fails then what can u do

23. Have you ever stolen something from someone else?

I don't believe so??? not knowingly-- i always try to be all "so-and-so made this!" or linking to posts if i mention or draw inspo from smth, but i've written this muse since 2019 so i also recognize there may be an instance of like. "this is popular fanon or this was a popular person's idea" that i adopted but didn't know actual source? but i try to make sure if smth isn't original that i add a disclaimer to it

24. Have you ever had something stolen from you? If so, how did you handle it?

a long long time ago, there was an artist where i had permission to edit and use their art for blog graphics and someone took that, so i initially just messaged to point out that while i had artist permission to edit and use, the artist didn't allow others to--and then the artist did a dmca notice when that person was rude lmao

25. Are you open to duplicates? Why / why not?

yes! everyone writes and interprets characters different, including if they're the same chara so if someone wanted to write yorii or koku off of my versions of them, i wouldn't mind it

26. How do you feel about vague posting?

i'm not really a huge fan? like. i'm a big proponent of "if something is bothering you, tell the person". i'm constantly asking permission before i do smth, and likewise i expect someone to tell me if i step on their toes or otherwise disturb them in some way. i'm not rly interested in writing with someone that can't effectively communicate with me--i don't even mind if it isn't 100% proper grammar or smth!! english isn't everyone's first language and ppl can be in various stages of learning it, as long as someone can effectively communicate as in i can understand what they mean and they take the time to address things, i see no point nor purpose in vague posts and it kind of turns me off from interacting with people that do them

27. Do you follow people even if they don’t follow you back?

if someone is active and they don't follow back in a week-ish, i just unfollow because i always get the feeling they're not interested in writing and i shouldn't pester them by trying anyway because it would be rude

28. Do you read people’s rules before following or interacting?

yes!! i read the rules before i even follow, as well as about pages, and i periodically will re-read while interacting just to try making sure i'm not doing smth that will bother them

29. What is your opinion on “reblog karma” and do you practice it?

honestly??? i find it rude when someone reblogs memes from me and never sends any in. like i get it when it doesn't work for the chara for example, but every single meme, and our only interaction is that person reblogging memes from me? i get v tempted to just softblock to get them to stop that because it kinda feels??? bad??? to only amount to a meme resource page. if i see a meme i want to reblog i generally reblog from the source, but i Always make an effort to send them in too because i def know how it feels to see everyone having fun on the dash but you're just left forgotten in a corner and that is Not a good feeling

30. How have you responded to popular slang used on tumblr? Do you use it in every day life? Do you use it at all?

honestly i'm sure there's something i picked up and may use in typing but i'm genuinely not sure what counts as tumblr slang and what isn't just like. general internet/social media slang-- but i do have a bad habit of picking up tics from ppl i talk to a lot

Ramblings: Point Reaches 30 Goals; Tavares Tops 80 Points; Rangers Defencemen; Josh Manson – March 31

For as well as the Bruins have been playing, it’s easy to forget that they still have a bevy of players out of the lineup. We have some good news for Boston fans as the injured players look to be returning soon. At the least, it looks like Jake DeBrusk will be back Saturday afternoon against the Panthers. Zdeno Chara and Charlie McAvoy are not expected back on Saturday but they are not far behind. If you’re in a head-to-head league that plays through to the end of the year, reinforcements are on the way.

The Eeli Tolvanen Watch has ended as he’s signed a contract, practiced with the team, and looks to feature in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Lightning. I imagine he’ll be eased in (though in practice he did take a couple rushes with the top line) so there won’t be much fantasy value for the rest of this season. There will, however, be some good scouting opportunities for next season.

Stephen Johns is out with a concussion for the Stars. They say it’ll be at least four or five days but there are only seven left in the season after today. I can’t imagine they bring him back from a concussion for one or two days. If you need an emergency pickup from the team, Esa Lindell played over 24 minutes after Johns was injured in their last game.

The return to New York of the players that had been traded to Tampa Bay was looking like it would be the biggest moment of the night. Alas, we had this:

Yes, that’s Pavel Buchnevich and Steven Stamkos fighting. You read those names right. It followed Buchnevich taking a big hit and then taking a run at Nikita Kucherov himself (and it was kind of dirty). Anyway, though Stamkos was held with a point in a game his team won 7-3, he got you 19 penalty minutes. If you’re in a multi-cat league, can you really be angry? The people who should be angry are Nikita Kucherov owners, who also was held without a point but didn’t contribute much else.

Brayden Point had a pair of goals and that gives him 30 on the year. He’s looking every bit the number-1 centre teams covet.

Filip Chytil scored his first (of what should be many) NHL goals. Mikhail Sergachev had an assist and is now one point shy of 40 on the year. Not bad for a teenager playing under 16 minutes a night!

TJ Oshie played most of the game in their loss to Carolina but he didn’t finish it and he apparently suffered a lower-body injury. All the coach would say after the game was that they were being very cautious and he’ll be re-evaluated on Saturday.

Two assists for Jaccob Slavin pushed him over the 30-point mark for the second consecutive season. He had three blocked shots to push him over 150 for the year for the second season in a row as well. Slavin doesn’t hit very much but all in all, not a bad multi-category season for him at all.

John Carlson assisted on Washington’s lone goal, his 50th helper of the year, the first time he’s hit that mark. It was also his 65th point of the campaign. Yeah, he’s going to get a very large contract this offseason.

The big boys came to play for the Leafs in their 5-4 win over the Islanders, at least offensively. All of Nazem Kadri, Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner had a goal and an assist while James van Riemsdyk also scored. The two-point performance from Marner gives him 69 points on the year. He also needs one more power-play assist to reach 20 such helpers.

John Tavares scored a power-play goal which was his 34th goal of the year, a three-year high. He also cracked 80 points for the first time in three seasons. This is the bounce back year we were all hoping for last season.

Brock Nelson also scored and he’s one shy of 20 on the year. Were he to get there, he’d be one of 25 forwards (so far) to crack 20 goals in each of the previous four seasons. As he’s been pushed down the lineup his assist totals have suffered but he’s been every bit the goal scorer he’s always been.

Two assists in this game leaves Jake Gardiner two points shy of 50 on the campaign. For as high as some people have been on him for his career, I don’t think anyone saw a 50-point season on the horizon.

Semyon Varlamov was injured in Colorado’s win over the Blackhawks. He was crashed into by Tomas Jurco on the play and replaced by Jonathan Bernier. Jurco seemed to lose his balance driving the net from the slot and slammed into Varlamov’s left leg. Now, it was late in the game and the score was out of hand so maybe they were being cautious, but he did seem to be in a good amount of pain. When we have updates we will pass them along.

Sven Andrighetto scored for the first time since December! He finished with two goals, five shots, and over 17 minutes in ice time. He was a big part of the depth scoring earlier in the season and would go a long way in lengthening the scoring if he can return to that player for the Avs. His eight goals are a career-high, by the way.

Mikko Rantanen has a goal and an assist and has the quietest 82 points in the league. Tyson Barrie had a goal and two assists, and that gives him a career-high 55 points in just 64 games. As I’ve mentioned before in these pages, he’s one of the most elite offensive defencemen in the league that no one talks about unless it’s rumours about being traded to a Canadian team.

Rickard Rakell scored his 32nd of the year, one off his pace last year, and it was the overtime winner for Anaheim.

Drew Doughty scored the lone goal for the Kings, his 10th of the season. It’s three straight campaigns with at least 10 goals for the blue liner, and 7 of his 10 NHL seasons. Two of the seasons he failed to reach 10 markers were his rookie year and the lockout year. He’s now one point shy of his career-high of 59.

William Karlsson had a monster fantasy night as he’s known to have (this year anyway). He had a goal (short-handed), two assists (one on the OT winner), was plus-2, had four total shots on net, one blocked shot, and three hits. Line mate Marchessault had two goals, one of which was the overtime clincher.

At the risk of sounding redundant, can I say how impressive it’s been to watch Ryan Donato since he debuted with the Bruins? I know it’s a common trope in the media and among fans, but he genuinely looks like a middle-six winger that has been playing in the NHL for three or four years. Should the injury to Rick Nash prove even more serious and he misses playoff time, Donato is a very nice insurance policy. I’m also very optimistic for his fantasy value next year. Without Nash in the lineup – which he won’t be for 2018-19 – Donato has been earning those top power-play minutes. Second line with David Krejci and top PP unit with Bergeron and co.? Yes please.

With the news earlier this week that Kevin Shattenkirk would miss the rest of the season, it got me wondering: how do we value the Rangers defencemen next year?

Neal Pionk has been the point producer since be recalled with 14 points in 23 games (heading into Friday night). The bad news is that half his points have been second assists. The good news is that they have come on the power play, where he’s supplanted Brady Skjei and been given priority over John Gilmour. A healthy Shattenkirk would mean secondary PP minutes for Pionk but at least he’d have those. At the least, he’ll get first crack at the second unit in 2018-19.

Pionk not shooting is a bit of a concern as he’s shot considerably less than many other Rangers d-men. While shooting isn’t an absolute necessity for fantasy value – Keith Yandle and Jake Gardiner have shown that – it does help fill some roto categories and it’s hard to score an acceptable amount for a d-man landing fewer than two shots per game playing.

Gilmour, on the other hand, has no problem shooting the puck. He’s played just under 340 minutes at five-on-five but in that limited sample he’s taken over 16 shots per 60 minutes, one of five defencemen to do so along with Brent Burns, Yohann Auvitu, Dougie Hamilton, and Johnny Boychuk. His ice time has been taking a hit of late though, failing to crack 15 minutes in three straight games of late.

It would appear the Rangers coaching staff is higher on Pionk than Gilmour given their deployment, but the Rangers staff may not even be around next year. Nevertheless, Gilmour’s upside without power play time might be something akin to Boychuk; 5-8 goals and 25-30 points. Pionk would be a bit more on the production side with some PP points mixed in. Because of how he’s being used, I would guess Pionk would be the guy to own after Shattenkirk next season, but a lot can change between now and October. Just wanted to get some initial thoughts out.

Speaking of production among defencemen, I’m not sure how many people realize this but over the last three seasons, Josh Manson leads the Ducks blue line in points per 60 minutes at five-on-five (0.85) and it’s not particularly close with Cam Fowler at 0.62. Over those three seasons, league-wide, he’s tied with the likes of Shea Weber, Morgan Rielly, and Matt Niskanen. That’s pretty good company.

It’s been a fantastic season this year with 32 points and none on the power play. All those five-on-five points have him third in the league on a per-minute basis behind only Erik Karlsson and Torey Krug. He doesn’t seem to have favour with the coaches, though, at least offensively given his non-existent PP usage and the fact that even though they lost Shea Theodore in the offseason, traded Sami Vatanen, and have been fighting injuries all season, he’s still earning just about 20 minutes a game (including a lot of short-handed minutes).

With no PP time, and without additional five-on-five minutes, this season will be the high-water mark for Manson. Don’t chase these points next year in drafts.

Over the summer, one thing I wrote about a couple times was the dilemma of choosing William Nylander or Mitch Marner for this season. It appears as though Marner will be the right decision. For whatever reason, even when he’s in the lineup, the Auston Matthews–William Nylander PP unit can’t get it together but the Marner unit can.

So I ask Dobber heads: if you had to pick one player for a dynasty league at the end of the season, would it be Marner or Nylander? Sound off in the comments.

I kind of wonder what Vladimir Tarasenko’s ADP will be next year. Barring a big point binge over the balance of the season, it’ll be the first time since 2013-14 that he’ll fail to crack 70 points. He needs four more goals to crack 35 or he’ll fail to do so since that same season. He was typically a late first round pick this year but will he be next year?

You have the staples of Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, and Kucherov. Brad Marchand, Evgeni Malkin, Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine, Patrick Kane, and Steven Stamkos probably all find themselves in the top-10. Then you have defencemen like Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson, and goalies like John Gibson and Connor Hellebuyck. Throw in wild cards like the Big Two from Dallas, Mark Scheifele, Jack Eichel, Victor Hedman, Pekka Rinne, and Sergei Bobrovsky, and we could easily see Tarasenko fall outside the top-12 and maybe in the 15-20 range.

I’m just thinking out loud for now but Tarasenko is probably going to be a value next season. He’s shooting 8.45 percent on the power play (by far a career-low, having never been below 15 percent before), 10.75 percent at five-on-five (the second-lowest of his career among 82-game seasons), and has a four-year low in total assists per minute. All this is to say that despite having an established career, there may be some bad luck going on for him and his line mates. We’ll dive deeper over the summer, but I feel confident, in March, planting my flag for Tarasenko as a must-draft in the second round come September.
