SHADOW & BONE REVIEW: EP 4

On this episode: I crack open a bottle of kvass, the famous goat finally shows up, traditional Kazakh hats, I complain about onion domes, 1870s Russian composers, communist propaganda in Ravka (its more likely than you think), the Canadian national anthem, and a wild Leigh Bardugo appears.

...yes these are ALL things I found connections to in this episode because I am a fount of useless knowledge. There were LOTS of fun things to pick up on in this episode.

It is 10:30 am and I am busting open my bottle of kvass. Can you see my Grishaverse shirt in the reflection?

Kvass is non-alcoholic if you didn’t know, or very, very low percentage. My mom is from Poland and she says it means “sour” in Polish. Hmm yeah it’s pretty sour. Like a sour beer without the booziness. I’m drinking it out of a pewter tankard I stole from my Grandma’s bar years ago bc I wanted it. Ok, onward.

BUT if they made them staggered, it would look maybe TOO much like Russian Orthodox architecture? It's not like we don't already know we're in fantasy Russia. I still want the domes to be bigger. They are properly gold at least. Maybe there are more. Doesn’t Inej repel down from one in the trailer? I wanna see that one.

- Oohhh! That lady on the side of the platform is wearing a traditional hat like they wear in Kazakhstan!!! These are the cultural bits I live for! Amazing!

- Goat on a leash. We were wrong about Kaz being a dog person. He is, in fact, a goat person.

- Oooo! Bodkin is wearing one of those woven Slav belts that you typically tie around a Vyshyvanka shirt but uhhh he's not wearing it properly. It doesn't go around your neck. Good try, though.

- Oooo the books in the library are pretty! The illustrations are lovely. And some of them are handwritten and some printed. Beautiful details

- The Lives of Saints. Shit, I don’t actually own that book. Sorry I’m a fake fan, I don’t even deserve to be here.

- Has Baghra always lived in a cave? I thought Baba Yagas live in huts. A hut on chicken leg stilts. ( ie Pictures at an Exhibition, Modest Mussorgsky, 1874.)

- Now Baghra, SHE has a nice raspy voice. I will say this about Kaz: he doesn’t have The Voice but I’m ok with it. I kind of like the contrast of him having a more soft voice bc Kaz is already sharp and gravely enough in other ways. You can't have everything. And Freddy is really damn good so I won't hear a word against him. Fight me.

- Oh she said “what are you.” Remember who else said the same words? Such connections, wow. I wonder if they're related.

- Aw, Trainman has 2 tin icons in the corner. Just like what Russian hockey players put in their equipment stalls. Religious people keep their icons close. We love to see it.

- Are you planning on using the goat as bait for volcra? Is he their canary that you send down a mine shaft to tell if there’s carbon monoxide?

- Is that Polish crystal on this table? I swear my mom has the same wine glasses in her China hutch.

- Jesper will not throw out the goat, he will hug the goat and shut the hell up. Sir, that is his emotional support goat.

- Ok wow that is some good precision shooting. Was that fabrikator magic making that shot?

- Alina is doing a voiceover recap. Kinda weird. Should have used new material instead of clips from previous episodes. We're only on ep 3, we don't need a recap yet.

- Nuh uh, sory the “true north” is actually Canada, the words are in their national anthem. "The true north strong and free!"

A3! Act 3 Episode 9 Summary

Please read through this note before you start reading the summary!

whhhhew, finally finished episode 9 and THE EMOTIONS ARE ROLLING-😭😭

but ofc being the maniac that i am ive decided to provide a full summary of episode 9 for those who are interested!

Be warned that this is MAJOR STORY SPOILERS so i would recommend you be at least finished act 2 and all the events leading up to it before you read this. Otherwise you’ll probably have a hard time understanding the full context of things.

The last note I want to make is that this won’t be a detail-for-detail summary! I still want to keep things decently vague so people can still have the joy of experiencing the story for themselves while still providing adequate information to clear up any confusions and speculations. This summary will basically be a rough outline of the story that highlights some of the major events that went on. This summary will follow the order of how the episode played out, all the events will be listed in order.

Ofc, if anybody has any specific questions regarding the story that they want clarified or just simply want to discuss episode 9: always feel free to shoot in an ask or dm me! I’m always happy to provide with information and/or rant about these precious boys!

Well, without further ado, here y’all go~~

WARNING: EXTREMELY LONG POST AND MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD~

the new groups of people now are the following:

High schoolers- Yuki/Muku/Azami/Kumon

Yosei University- Juza/Tsuzuru/Tenma/Taichi

Amabi- Kazunari/Banri

Adult group is still adult group~~

Apparently Tenma’s parents decided it would be a good idea to let him attend university so it was decided on the spot that he would be going through exams. He had to get Chikage to tutor to barely scrape by passing bc of how busy he was. Taichi on the other hand....Tsumugi the GOAT-

Omi now works as a professional photographer through a job his friend introduced him to.

Masumi decided to go to Fuyou University which is Tasuku and Tsumugi’s old university to study. Misumi’s brother, Madoka, also studies there. Although Madoka does not look like it, he’s actually 19... I know...

Azami decided to attend the same high school as Kumon which warms my heart honestly bc it just showed how good of friends they’ve become <3~~ Here’s his new uniform look <333

not sure how i feel about the red hoodie but eh, boy can pull it off so it doesn’t matter aha~

Guy is apparently opening up a new Zahra style bar with the help of the winter troupe members such as Homare who introduced him to an interior design company (same company that installed that brick wall in his room orz). Hisoka will also be helping out in Guy’s bar.

The entirety of Reni’s backstory (5 episodes in total) which describe his initial meeting with Yukio during high school to how they built Mankai together was described through the format of portraits (the autumn troupe signature). HIs backstories are basically just narrations of Act 3 1/2 if any of you read that when it was first posted.

Reni’s real name is apparently “Kamikizaka Reiji” and “Reni” is a nickname that Yukio gave him in high school bc Yukio thought that his real name was too hard to write out in kanji and pronounce lolol.

Reni keeps a journal which documents his time with Yukio (basically Act 3 1/2) in a safe in his office.

Kasumi’s nickname back in the day was apparently “Juriko”: stems from “Juliette” and “ko” which is a way to feminize someone’s name in Japanese. This was because he was the crossdresser that had to play Juliette in the OG spring troupe RomiJuri- heh.

Shifuto is now the new “top” in GOD Troupe after Tasuku and Haruto who got demoted.

FRIEND ANGST BETWEEN AZAMI AND SHIFUTO HNGHHH and that’s all I’m willing to say oop-

GOD Troupe challenged Mankai to an act-off once again and this time appointed Tsumugi as the lead and Tasuku to be in the play and the theme as “devil” and thus...Devil Tsumugi was born.

The company was initially debating on whether to accept the challenge or not but Tsumugi and Taichi desperately wanted to show Reni who they have become as an actor and prove him wrong on all the things he’s said to them. Basically, everyone who was casted for this play had their own reasons on why they wanted to act.

Misumi’s dad’s name is revealed to be “Kusumi” which literally means nine-points/sides and I- top 10 betrayals? I was certain that his name will have something to do with a square but apparently not-

Although it was briefly revealed during Sky Pirates, Misumi’s dad is the official script writer for GOD Troupe. However, it is shown here that he has absolutely no talent in writing so what he does is get Madoka to act as his ghostwriter and write for him.

Hence this birthed Madoka’s complex of wanting to write in his own free will and not under the control of his father. Since everything he writes gets “edited” by his father but everything his father edited gets rejected by Reni and so Madoka has to fix it himself anyways.

Returning to backstory, Reni revealed that Yukio legit went to visit Misumi’s grandpa (Hakkaku) as a senior high school student to ask him for a script. As a note, Hakkaku was already a very famous script writer at that time and age wise he is about what both their dads would be. Ofc he was refused many times but Yukio wouldn’t give up and would not stop pestering Hakkaku until he finally caved in.

Honestly I loved the autumn and winter troupe dynamic throughout this entire episode- just the way they supported Taichi and Tsumugi is just-

Kumon had to act as the mediator between Azami and Shifuto to try and recover their friendship and the entire process was hilarious.

Yukio and Reni were actually Yuzo and Kasumi’s high school seniors at Nanakusa High. Yuzo was the “ghost member” that was only member of drama club in-name only that was mentioned earlier.

NAMIKAWA DAISUKE’S VOICE IN KASUMI- *deaded counter x1* as a tiny side note: i realized half way through that Tezuka (Reni), Sanada (Yuzo), and Ootori (Kasumi) were in the same high school together bc of their seiyuus. This is for my TeniPuri fans out there haha~~

During their last performance in high school, Yukio and Reni got boycotted by the other junior members right before their play. Reni ended up forcing a reluctant Yukio to go at speak act out the monologue Hakkaku provided for them and everybody ended up being overwhelmed by Yukio’s performance.

This is what ended up making Reni dedicate his post high school life creating Mankai with Yukio, he wants to see Yukio act on stage again. He describes Yukio’s acting as “someone who was chosen by God” and even went as far as using his own money his parents gave him when they kicked him out (strict family bs) to build the initial theatre while they both worked part-time. Reni was the one who designed the entire theatre according to Yukio’s wishes to “make it long lasting”. However, Yukio revealed to him that he has no desire to stand on stage again and instead wants to make others “full bloom”, this invoked a sense of betrayal in Reni.

Reni was also the one who recruited Syu, his childhood friend, into the theatre. From there on, Yuzo and Kasumi also joined. Kasumi was revealed to also be garbage at acting at first but Yukio appointed him as lead for their first play nonetheless.

There is apparently some outside force wanting to ruin Mankai as they even went as far as stealing a part of Tsuzuru’s script and provided it to Misumi’s dad who ended up plagiarizing. It is later revealed that Reni had nothing to do with this so it is currently unknown who the main perpetrator is.

In order to get a better grasp on his devil character, Tsumugi opted to spend one day with each of the other winter troupe members (Homare, Hisoka, and Azuma) individually. This is to get more insight from people who had lived such different lives and accumulated such different experiences. Honestly, one of the most heartwarming moments ever.

MY ANGST MAN IS HERE WITH HIS FIRST APPEARANCE!!! SAKURAI TAKAHIRO’S VOICE OMGGGGG *deaded counter x2*

He met Tsumugi in front of the GOD Theatre and asked him to “save” Reni.

On the day of the performance, Tsumugi and Taichi decided to walk to the theatre. They met Banri and Juza along the way who were planning to do a street act to release some energy. On their way, they ended up being surrounded by numerous punks who were presumably sent by the same outside force who stole Tsuzuru’s script.

The night before the actual performance, the plagiarism was revealed to both sides and both sides were just as much caught off guard by this. Reni, however, refused to change the direction of the play since it was too risky as the performance is the next day. However, Shifuto refused to act out something that is plagiarized since he promised Azami that they would have a “fair fight like men”.

And so, he managed to convince Haruto to use Madoka’s script that he has written for the first time according to free will and changed the entire play in one night. With the help of Haruto’s authority, they managed to do it in time. (I’ve failed to mention this until now but these three has been building up chemistry all through out this episode and im so down for them tbh)

Banri told Juza to take Tsumugi and Taichi and go ahead while he stays behind to try and buy some time alone against all the men. Just when Banri was in a tight spot due to power in number...

BAM THIS OLD MAN COMES IN AND SAVES THE DAY!! by now y’all already know... YASUMOTO HIROKI’S VOICE HAAAAAAAAAH *deaded counter x3*

After Banri revealed to Zen that he was autumn troupe leader of Mankai, Zen gave him a card of his restaurant, “Gentiana” and promised to treat them to a meal there afterwards.

Costume reveal for GOD Troupe. Honestly, I love the chemistry that was built throughout this episode between Shifuto, Haruto, and Madoka. Haruto really did give out redeeming qualities and i don’t dislike him as much as before aha (even tho he is still a snob) and I acknowledge him as a character. Madoka’s script consisted of two characters and basically talks about two estranged brothers (his way of writing down his guilt for towards Misumi)

Costume reveal for Mankai as many of you probably have seen already- devil tsumugi and sexy tasuku is just-

In terms of actual in-game plays, this was the second play that I’ve actually cried at, the first being Clockwork. Super emotional and well-written play and certainly it draws a lot of parallels to Sympathy for the Angel.

SAME RENI...JUST-SAME. TT

After the performances...i won’t reveal who won and by how much but Reni did officially apologize for all his past actions as he was reminded of his passion for acting through this play. Izumi thought this too but it is hard to 100% forgive him bc of the pain he’s brought on all the members.

He revealed why he quit Mankai, it was bc he and Yukio had become so divided that if he had stayed, the entire balance of Mankai would fall to ruins. He actually came to the conclusion to leave after being trapped in the time loop with Yukio for about three days aha~

Reni decided to create GOD Troupe bc he wanted them to win the Fleur Awards first and crush Mankai, that way, he may have the chance one day to accepted a lost Yukio in his troupe as an actor and not a director (obsessed much my dude??)

The last part of the episode is Reni wanting to talk to Izumi about the Ikaruga family and being invited to Mankai Dorms as a result. There he reminisced the days with the OGs before we are left with a cliffhanger-

Even though he only talked for two lines but ONO DAISUUUUKE~~~ *deaded counter x4*

The very last scenes showcased how the OGs are starting to come back together as they will be getting involved with the new Mankai members.

that concludes the rough summary of episode 9! i...this was an ordeal to get through aha and sorry for it ended up being such a long post...It was inevitable bc this episode consisted of 39 chapters.

Honestly im so dead by the end of this that i didnt have the heart to check for any grammar mistakes so there’re probably quite a few that i ask you kindly to just ignore~ 🥺🥺

Gorgeously Glamorous Gargalesis (Chapter 7)

Tickles from miniature versions of rectangle Mettaton are fun. But so are tickles from the real Mettaton’s wiggly fingers! :D And in this chapter, Mettaton is going to use those wiggly fingers of his once again. ;P But this time however, he’s going to use them on the boys’ feet! Typical Mettaton; ignoring the pleas of his victims as he tickles their feet. Mettaton loves tickling all parts of the body but there's just something about tickling feet that he finds utterly fascinating and a lot of that stems from his lack of feet as a ghost. As a ghost, Mettaton, formerly known as Happstablook, had no feet of his own and aside from Shyren and her sister; he didn't interact with other types of monsters enough to get to know them personally. So therefore, he had no pairs of feet to play with and tickle. It wasn't until he met Alphys that he tickled feet for the first time in his life. Alphys with her cute, scaly, 3-toed lizard feet and adorable reactions to tickles; the first time Mettaton ever tickled her and her feet, he was hooked and as a result of tickling Alphys's feet that day, for 2 whole hours, he has a tendency to tickle feet more than every other part of others' bodies. This is why he spent so much time tickling Frisk and Chara's feet last Wednesday and Muffet's feet last Thursday and Friday… and why he's going to spend so much time tickling Asriel and MK's feet tonight. Those poor boys! XD But they're being good sports about it though. Sure, they're pleading to be released from the stocks. But they don't mean it. They never do when the tickle torture is intended to be fun. X3

After 2 whole minutes, Mettaton gave MK a breather and tickled Asriel's feet with all four of his hands; scribbling his secondary sets of fingers up and down every inch of his soles from heel to ball and using his primary sets of fingers to play with his toes.

Asriel: BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! *Asriel immediately bleated, jolting backwards as much as he could the very moment he felt 4 sets of fingers work their magic on his insanely sensitive feet* GYAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!! *he then laughed super hysterically, bouncing up and down in his chair as much as his limited movement allowed him to do so* BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! *SNORT* OHOHOHOH MY GOHOHOHOD!!!! *SNORT* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!! Asriel was in stitches. Like his parents, his feet are too ticklish for their own good and having his soles and toes tickled at the same time is certainly overkill for him. But he wouldn't have it any other way with four metallic hands working their magic on his feet and luckily for him, Mettaton stopped after 2 minutes to give him a much needed breather. But then Mettaton switched over to MK's feet and did the same thing; scribbling his secondary sets of fingers up and down every inch of the young reptilian boy's scaly soles and using his primary sets of fingers to play with his toes.

MK: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!! *MK immediately screamed like a banshee, wagging his tail frantically in his chair while trying desperately to pull his feet out of the stocks* HAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHA!!!! *he then laughed super hysterically, bouncing up and down in his chair as much as his limited movement allowed him to do so* HOHOHOHOLY MOHOHOHOHOLY, HOHOHOHOLY MOHOHOHOHOLY!!!! Lydia: Mmmmmmmm… And you! He gets his cuteness from you too! *said Lydia cheekily to Rocco, blushing red* All of our kids do! Don't deny it! *she added, touching Rex's tail lovingly with her own tail and smiling at him* Heeheeheehehee! Mmmmmmmmmmm…

Poor MK! Poor ticklish MK! It isn’t too often a single individual with four hands tickles his feet. But he likes it though. Despite all of the begging and pleas to be released from the stocks, he is having all kinds of fun laughing up a storm as Mettaton works his magic on his soles and toes with his 4 sets of fingers. It could be worse. In fact, the only thing MK feels could be worse at this point in the session is an individual with 6 hands tickling his feet; like Muffet. Little does MK know, that might happen sooner than he thinks. XD

MK: HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

2 minutes later, Mettaton stopped tickling MK with his fingers, giving the young lizard boy himself a much needed breather in the process, but only long enough to bring in a "special guest."

Mettaton: Hahahahaha! Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! Hahahahaha! Now for this next phase, I will not be tickling the boys. Instead, a "special friend" of mine will be… *clearing throat sound (from Mettaton's built-in speaker)* I said a special friend of mine will be tickling the boys…

*cricket sounds (also from Mettaton's built-in speaker)*

Mettaton: Oh for goodness sake. *said Mettaton, pretending to be annoyed with his "guest"* Wait here while I get him, will you?

While waiting, Asriel and the lizards heard a humorous conversation between two individuals, which in reality was only one individual. Mettaton himself! Out of sight, he was talking to himself in two different voices; one of them his normal voice and the other a baby-friendly voice similar to Barney the Dinosaur's. The baby-friendly voice is for Rex and so is the "special guest," which is just Mettaton in his rectangle form playing a character. Rex is aware that rectangle Mettaton and Mettaton Ex are the same person. But what he doesn't appear to know is that Mettaton's personality doesn't actually change after switching to his rectangle form. To Rex, rectangle Mettaton is a goofy, overly friendly baby-loving robot rather than just Mettaton Ex with a different look; and Rex believes this because the act Mettaton always puts on for him in his rectangle form is incredibly convincing. Also, as a rectangle, Mettaton isn't as "scary."

Mettaton: Hello, everybody! It's me! "Ton Ton the Fun Fun Robot!" *shouted Mettaton in his baby friendly voice as he rolled his way into everyone's field of vision* Ton Ton! He's Fun Fun! Ton Ton! He's Fun Fun! He's such a friendly robot and television host! And if it weren't for Ton Ton, all TV would be toast! He's such a friendly robot and television host! And if it weren't for Ton Ton, all TV would be toast! They all shout his name when he rolls into town! Hooray! Here comes Ton Ton! To cheer you up if you're down! He wouldn't ever harm a soul! Oh, what a relief! The mention of his very name fills us all with glee! Ton Ton! He’s Fun Fun! Ton Ton! Yay! *he sang with background music playing from his built-in speaker, rolling over towards Rex, who squealed excitedly the moment he saw him in his rectangle form, to tickle him for no more than 20 seconds*

Rex: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEHEEHEEHEEHEHEEHEEHEE! *giggled Rex as Mettaton tickled his sides while he was sitting in an upright position next to his mother on the couch*

Mettaton: Heeheeheehee! You like that, Rex? Well, Ton Ton's gotten a few upgrades since the last time he's tickled you; like this second pair of arms!

Seconds later, Mettaton, while continuing to tickle Rex's sides with his primary hands, tickled Rex's feet with his backup hands, causing his giggles to turn into full-hearted laughter.

Rex: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! *squealed Rex, falling over on his left side and wagging his tail at full speed as Mettaton tickled his sides and feet with his four hands* HEEHEEHEEHEEHEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEE HEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEHEHEEHEEHEE!! *SQUEAK* HEEHEEHEEHEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEE!!

Once Mettaton, as "Ton Ton," stopped tickling Rex, he turned his attention over to the two older monster boys. They don't know what Mettaton is intending to do next but whatever it is, it can only be done while he's in his rectangle form.

Mettaton: Heeheeheeheehee! And now to tickle these two boys! With every single one of these feathers! *said Mettaton charismatically, deploying feathers out of every single finger of his while continuing his act as Ton Ton* Tickling with feathers is a great way to make new friends! Heeheeheeheehee!

The boys are in for it now! One feather is already enough to tickle them to hysterical laughter but unfortunately for them, Mettaton is planning to tickle them with 20 feathers (10 for each boy)! 20 fingers, 20 feathers! 20 colorful feathers from every single one of Mettaton's fingers! Gray ones from each of his 4 index fingers, yellow feathers from each of his 4 middle fingers, red feathers from each of his 4 ring fingers, black feathers from each of his 4 pinky fingers, and white feathers from each of his 4 thumbs! Rectangle Mettaton colors! :D

Asriel and MK: *frightened gasps* EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! *squealed the boys frighteningly, one second before they both began laughing at the mere thought of being tickled by feathers* Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

MK: Hahahahaha! Ohohohoh nohoho! Hahahahaha! Feathers! Hahahahaha! Why did it hahahave to beeheehee feheheathers?! Hahahahahahaha!

Asriel: Hahahahaha! Now wait just a gohohosh darn second! Hahahahahaha! Feather tickles are a fohohohorm of knismesis; not gahahargalesis! *Asriel pointed out while laughing and giggling* Hahahahaha!

Asriel has a point! Mettaton referred to today's tickle session as, "Gorgeously Glamorous Gargalesis." Not "Gorgeously Glamorous Gargalesis and Knismesis!"

Mettaton: Pfft. Gargalesis is Mettaton's thing today, silly boy. I'm Ton Ton and my thing is knismesis and I've got plenty of feathers to tickle you with too! In 10… 9… 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2… 1! Heeheeheehee! Coochie coochie coo! Heeheeheeheehee!

At that moment, Mettaton tickled both Asriel and MK on their nearly immobile feet with feathers from his fingers. Sawing each of the gray feathers in between their outermost and middle toes and each of the yellow feathers in between their middle and innermost toes was already enough to make them squeal at the top of their lungs but Mettaton went the extra mile by also twiddling feathers against their soles; red feathers on the balls of their feet, black feathers on their arches, and white feathers on their heels. This of course resulted in laughter from the boys once again but this time however, it was much more squealy than usual. Sure, fingers make them laugh more but there's just something about feathers that makes them squeal; probably because of those soft, tickly plumes of theirs. Sawing back and forth between their toes; it's so much easier to tickle in between little boys' toes with feathers than fingers. ;)

Mettaton: Heeheeheeheehee! *giggled "Ton Ton" as he stopped tickling the boys and retracted his feathers*

Mettaton only tickled the boys' feet with feathers for two minutes. But it was a hellish two minutes for the two monster boys. Those 20 feathers really did a number on them and their immensely ticklish feet. Sure, they may be barefooters with cute, tough, and durable feet. Yet somehow, they can barely handle a single feather gliding gently against one of their soles. But they love the feeling of the feathers though; despite how immensely ticklish their feet are. Twiddling against their soles and/or sawing in between their toes; they just can't ever get enough of them.

Mettaton: Heeheeheeheehee! Super duper job laughing, boys! Heeheeheeheehee!

MK: Heeheeheeheeheehee! "Suhuhuper duhuper?" Hahahahahaha! Who do yoohoohoou think you are? Hahahaha! Rohohohobbie? *asked MK while laughing and giggling due to phantom tickles, acknowledging Robbie's habit of saying, "super duper" when selling ice cream to his customers* Heeheeheeheehee!

Mettaton: That friendly blue rabbit? Hahahahaha! Funny you mention him. Did you boys hear that I tested out these marvelous contraptions on him and Burgerpants yesterday? *asked Mettaton curiously, unsure if Rocco and Lydia told Asriel and MK about him using Robbie and BP as test subjects for his tickling contraptions* Hahahahahaha!

Asriel: Hahahaha! WHAHAHAHAT?! Hahahaha! NOHOHOHO! *answered Asriel while also laughing and giggling due to phantom tickles, shocked to hear that Mettaton used Robbie and BP as test subjects* Heeheeheeheeheehee!

MK: Hahahaha! HOHOHOLD THE PHOHOHONE! Hahahahaha! ROHOHOBBIE AND BP?! *asked MK as his laughter died down, also shocked to hear Mettaton's recent revelation* Heeheeheeheeheeheehee!

Mettaton: Huh. I guess not……… *robot cough* Well gee, this is awkward... But it doesn't matter because Ton Ton's job is here is done done! Heeheeheehee! Byyyyyyyyyeeeeeee! Bye, bye! Bye, bye, everybody! Bye, bye! *said Mettaton as Ton Ton, waving goodbye to everyone while awkwardly rolling out of everyone's field of vision* Heeheeheeheehee!

While having another hilarious out-of-sight conversation with himself, Mettaton reverted to his EX form. Then as soon as that "conversation" was over, he re-entered the room and deployed polishers out of each of his 10 primary fingers.

Mettaton: Hahahahahaha! I'm back, beauties and darlings! Did you miss me?

Rex: Yeeeeeeeeee! *exclaimed Rex, wagging his tail happily and clapping his hands and feet with great enthusiasm* Heeheeheehee!

Rocco and Lydia: Mmmmmmmmm… Yes… Mmmmmmmm… Yes, we did... *answered the lizard parents in a relaxed manner, the mini Mettatons still massaging their feet after all this time* Mmmmmmmmmm…

Mettaton: Hahahahaha! Fabulous! Now, just one last thing to do before the real fun begins! *said Mettaton in a "sinister" manner, seconds before tickling Asriel and MK's feet with electric polishers from each of his primary fingers*

Asriel and MK: BAAAAAAAAAAH/EEEEEEEEEEEP!!! GYAAAAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA HAHAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! *the two boys laughed hysterically, as expected; right as they were about to properly ask Mettaton about testing his tickling contraptions out on Robbie and BP*

Asriel: BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! *bleated Asriel adorably as 5 polishers tickled his feet; 2 "polishing" his heels, 2 "polishing" the arches and balls of his feet, and 1 "polishing" his six toes one by one (10 seconds for each toe)* HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

MK: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!! *squealed MK as 5 polishers tickled his feet the exact same way* HEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEE!!! NOHOHOHO!!! HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! NOHOHO, NOHOHO, NO, NOHOHOHOHO!!! *SQUEAK* HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

After one minute, Mettaton gave MK a breather and used all 10 of his polishers on Asriel's feet, making the young boss monster laugh and bleat like no other. Especially now with Mettaton "polishing" all 6 of his toes at once while using the remaining 4 on his soles!

Asriel: BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! HAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! *SNORT* GLEEEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEHEEEHEEHEEHEE!!!! *SNORT* BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHAHHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!

After one minute, Mettaton moved his polishers over to MK and did the exact same thing. One polisher on each one of his six toes and four on his soles; MK's laughter was through the roof!

After one last minute of tickling with the polishers, Mettaton tickled the boys' feet once again. Only this time with mini scrub brushes from each of his 10 backup fingers!

Pure madness for a ticklish kid such as himself!

After what felt like 5 minutes to the boys but in reality was only 1 minute, Mettaton retracted his polishers and scrub brushes and stopped tickling them, much to their relief. Not much longer now until the main event; but first, a break. The boys could really use one! Because after the break's over, Mettaton is finally going to activate his contraptions! :D

Sheep Faun Henry

Cyborg Geek Girl: I read somewhere that some Satyr's bare a stronger resemblance to sheep than goats, to the point of growing wool instead of regular fur. And now for some reason my brain is picturing Henry as a Sheep Satyr; he's human from the waist up, but sheep from there down, and with Ram horns on his head. He normally wears a charm of some kind to keep people from realizing he's not actually human. He had to leave because of something magic-related (or something). When he came back, he lost his charm at some point in chapter 2, and that's one of the reasons Sammy calls him a "Sheep".

Mom’s Lili Kittyflower: Oooo. Neat.

Cyborg Geek Girl: He wears pants (for modesty) after sheering himself in the spring, but during fall and winter, the wool on him is too thick to allow that. And he has specialized leg warmers he wears during the winter (for the areas that aren't covered in wool) Satyr Henry is very flexible since he has to do all kinds of fancy twisting to sheer himself without cutting himself.

CGG: Satyr Hen is a floof. I want to talk more about the sheep or see a picture of him.

SBOM: yesss

CGG: Joey didn't know about Henry being a Satyr. He suspected he was magic, but something more grande then a sheep.

SBOM: Ye, lol

CGG: Henry is going through the studio in the fall, which means there's ink soaking into his wool. He's very unhappy about it. He'll have to sheer himself early to get rid of the mats. People are confused by the sheepman making his way through the studio. Alice wants to hug him because he looks so fluffy, but he's drenched in tainted ink. Bendy is confused by the clopping he's hearing instead of footsteps. Boris found Henry a brush to get rid of the worst of the tangles in his hair and wool.

SBOM: Yesss. the butcher clones are fascinated by henry's wool

CGG: Pfft, yes. They want to pet the floof. There are no Satyr toons, so they've never seen anyone like Henry before.

SBOM: i love this. ooo satyr henry meets benry

CGG: He's so tired of the feeling of ink in the gaps of his hooves. That would be interesting.

SBOM: s!hen: i'm guessing you weren't always like that

b!hen: what gave it away?

castor: ANOTHER FLUFFY HENRY

CGG: Henry keeps being startled by them because they keep trying to grab some of his wool or his tail. And it's all on his lower body, so it's very uncomfortable. Especially since they're all butt level against him.

SBOM: when some of the wool gets cut off somehow, the butcher clones all mob on it, trying to look at it

CGG: Henry is very confused by it. Like "It's just some wool?"

SBOM: i feel like toons, in general, are just fascinated by wool aLSO NORMAN he's just like "my life is already weird enough, might as well add this onto the pile"

CGG: I don't follow. What would Norman's reaction be?

SBOM: that's norman's reaction i was just exclaiming because *i forgot my boy*

CGG: That Henry's actually a sheep man? He's just kinda rolling with it?

SBOM: Yeah.

CGG: Henry escapes the ink demon once by accidentally bleating when it startles him. The demon just... Stops. It doesn't know what to do because bleating is not something humans do when scared. Henry takes the chance to run as fast as he can.

SBOM: pfft there's no horror just comedy, confusion, and odd fascination

CGG: Which is just as fun as the Horror. Well, there's still body horror from the toons. And the coffins from the earlier chapters. Henry and Bo still get dropped down an elevator shaft.

SBOM: but it's not pure horror

CGG: That's true. I want to talk more about Satyr Henry. But I’m not sure what to talk about.

MLK: I want to talk more about him too How does he lose the charm?

CGG: I want to say it was some carved beads (or something like that) that he kept one of those leather pouches that you can wear around your neck, and a searcher ripped the pouch, and the beads ended up scattered on the floor. Henry couldn't fix the pouch right then, and even if he could, he hadn't been able to find all the beads.

SBoM: he's just annoyed that he'll have to recraft the charm from scratch again

CGG: Oh yeah. I’ve just decided Satyr Henry has sheepy ears too.

SBOM: yessss4

(And older o' course) As much as I love the long swooshy tail, I think he's gonna have the cute little nub-tail most sheep have. Henry is so floofy. Joey is so caught off guard by Faun Hen, he just kinda freezes and goes "Wat?" He'd expected Henry to be something a bit grander than a sheepman for him. Like a Vampire, or a Werewolf, or a Wizard or something like that.

Lil Lilipad: We gonna talk more about Faun Henry today?

Cyborg Geek Girl: I want to.

Lil Lilipad: Why don't we talk about why he left? You said "magical reasons" right?

Cyborg Geek Girl: “Magical or something" yeah. I want to say it was partially the stress of working at the studio, and Joey starting to stick his nose where it shouldn't be.

Lil Lilipad: I’m kinda wondering what Henry's family is like

Cyborg Geek Girl: Probably distant. He might not terribly close to them.

Lil Lilipad: Joey just starts dropping hints that he thinks Henry is something magical but all his guesses are completely off base so Henry leaves because it's annoying

Cyborg Geek Girl: Lol, yes. And because He's pretty much running the studio and not getting credit for it.

Lil Lilipad: Does he confront Joey about it before leaving?

Cyborg Geek Girl: For the Credit thing? Yes. It gets very bad. Joey walks out with a black eye and Henry's got some bruises too.

Lil Lilipad: Sorry I feel sick can't really talk

Cyborg Geek Girl: That's fine At first, Joey trying to guess what he really was had been amusing, but then it started to get on Henry's nerves.

Lil Lilipad: He never even gets remotely close

Cyborg Geek Girl: The closest he gets is Satyr, but that just visibly offends Henry. People often mistake them, but that's still pretty rude.

Lil Lilipad: “I’m sorry I guessed something that boring" Henry is further offended

Cyborg Geek Girl: (Satyr's are built like humans, but with Horsetails and ears. They were supposed to accompany Dianonsis, the Greek God of Wine, Celebrations and [ahem] "Sexual Activities") (Henry is less offended by the "boring" comment and more by the suggested activities) "My God Joey! Do you really think of me like that?!" Highly offended tone I want Sammy and/or Wally to be suspicious of Faun Henry not being human.

Cyborg Geek Girl: They find something like some wool, or maybe a chip from one of his horns or hooves. He was helping carry something heavy and it smacked against his head and they found a chip from one of his horns. Cyborg Geek Girl: Yes, people look at him funny when he does. Also, apparently Sheep/Rams can shed the outer covering of their horns. This is how Henry's horn had chipped but still healed later.

Lil Lilipad: Henry almost never laughs, so a couple people make it a challenge to see who can make him laugh first When they finally succeed, they find out that Henry has a really weird sounding laugh

Cyborg Geek Girl: Wally: whispers “No wonder he doesn't laugh.”

Lil Lilipad: Wally, Shawn, and probably one other person

Cyborg Geek Girl: Thomas. His curiosity couldn't be contained. (Before the Machine, he was their Heating and Plumbing guy)

It’s going to be a very fucking special-ass day for you.

He’d make Starscream, Knockout and Soundwave go out and get things for a traditional birthday, (YES they stole a cake FOR YOU).

Your vehicon friends all wish you a happy birthday, and they whisper Megatron’s going all out for you, even threatening to kill anyone who fucks with you or talks shit.

At the end, he says, if you will, he’s your present. ;)

Starscream (I’ve placed this when Megatron was offline)

Like Megatron, Screamer wants you to have some actual fun on your special day, but unlike Megatron, he goes out and gets the stuff himself.

And it actually is pretty fun, he lets the whole ship take a day off and relax and it’s actually pretty fun

It ends off with him asking nervously if this is what you wanted?

when you hug him and say yes, he flushes, and you end if off with some b-day cuddles~!

He get’s Lazerbeak to go find a specific thing you’d like, and maybe a cake.

First off, (guessing they have holomatters), they get movie tickets at a movie they thought you’d like and go during the day. They’d go to ta drive-in theater, but those are during the night, well. You’ll see.

When they get back, they’ve to throw a tiny surprise birthday party in the med-bay and they invited your vehicon friends and maybe Starscream. (Megs could care less.)

They get you something and hugs all around.

And it ends up being a college party. Kinda? they steal beer and aged wine if you’re into that, And they get Energex for everyone else, and you all do ‘beer’ pong and whatever else they could find on the internet that looked fun.

And it’s really cute, for a makeshift party.

All three of you wake up naked on the berth with horrid hangovers.

This'll sound weird but hear me out: what about a sorta shapeshifter/spirit animal AU for ITH? Like, y'know those kinds of stories where everyone has an animal form that they can change into at will? What do you think the ITH characters' animal forms would be? Idk, the idea of spirit animals/people having an animal form has always just intrigued me.

Oh man you got me scouring the internet for all the different meanings of animals for this!!

I mostly used this website, but here’s my rundown so far:

Usnavi - Badger (keeper of stories, reliance) since Usnavi’s the streetlight illuminating the stories and he seems to rely on others for support, like Vanessa, Abuela or Sonny since he’s not exactly an independent guy.

Sonny - Dog (loyalty, faithfulness) OR Seal (active imagination, creativity) because of his love for his family, looking up to his cousin, and his big dreams and goals of making the world a better place.

Vanessa - Horse (travel, freedom, power, movement) mostly because of her wanting to get out of the barrio and for her independence; I mean c'mon, the girl’s a queen, she don’t need nobody.

Nina - Kangaroo (moving/leaping forward) OR Deer (gentleness, innocence, gracefulness, luring to a new adventure) because of her kindness (obviously) and struggle with college but willing to move on and be someone better.

Benny - Mountain Goat (surefootedness, seeking new heights) OR Ram (seeking new beginnings) because of him wanting to open his own business while learning from Mr. Rosario.

Abuela - Wolf (guardianship, ritual, spirit, teacher) this one took me by surprise, cause imagine! Abuela as a god damn wolf! Do NOT mess with her!

Kevin - Cougar (coming into your own power) OR Boar (strength, family protection) because of how hard he worked to get to where he was, and of course, his love and willingness to do anything for his family, especially Nina

Camila - Panda (gentle strength, nourishment) because of her devotion to Nina and Kevin and her family in general, but I imagine she’d be a pretty ferocious panda if shit hit the fan.

Daniela - Lynx (secrets, the unseen and hidden) OR Lion (leadership, rulership) because of her basically knowing everything about everyone and her status as pretty much the ruler of the barrio next to Abuela.

Carla - Otter (joy, playfulness, sharing, female energy) that pretty much speaks for itself (although I love how hamilfluff always calls Usnavi an otter but that’s just for affection purposes X3 )

Pete - Eagle (creation, spirit, freedom) because he’s kind of a lone wolf and just seems to always be around, as part of the aesthetic of the heights (kind of a stretch, but I wanted at least ONE character to be able to fly XP )

But again, these are all just from one source! Feel free to add on or make your own if you have different opinions on who should be what!

NOW! As for plot threats (cause my writing muse is a monster) I could see this whole thing actually being some kind of curse or spell that the barrio’s under or the barrios some kind of haven for shapeshaifters. I debated making it a cultural thing but everyone’s pretty different belief-wise and the whole spirit animal thing is more Native American than Hispanic, soooo…

ANYWAY! Basically, the barrio dwellers are all shape-shifters and the barrio is basically where they all go to stay safe and learn to control their powers and all that jazz. Also, for the ones where I couldn’t decide between two animals? What if there are a few special people who have the rare ability to turn into two different animals?

However, this AU isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. The barrio fam has to deal with the whole outcast thing of being able to turn into animals, and it’s REALLY hard to not turn by accident since the animal qualities start to come out when they’re in danger OR if they exhibit certain traits that applies to their animal form. The former happens more often, mostly because there ARE people out there who know that shape-shifters exist. They wanna get their hands on them for research purposes, experiments, turning into weapons, all that terrible stuff. In fact, a lot of the people CHOOSE to stay in the barrio since there’s safety in numbers if someone attacks.

This of course, leads to a TON of protectiveness for the younger ones, like Sonny and Pete. As you know, hunters and poachers ALWAYS try to go for the kids, so they have to keep a sharp eye out for any suspicious figures. But luckily, one of the things that everyone learns is how to defend themselves in their animal forms, even if you don’t turn into something with fangs and claws. They learn their strengths and weaknesses of their form and what situations they can get out of (it’s kinda like team-building in Pokémon)

But if someone DOES get attacked or captured in the barrio by intruders, better watch out! All the barrio dwellers have a sixth sense when it comes to their own kind, and direct family members know INSTANTLY if something’s wrong. If anyone tries ANYTHING, they’re getting run down by an animal army. And if they manage to get away with one of them, the whole damn barrio will hunt them down until they find them.

Raising Old-Fashioned Kids in a High Tech World

I’m not a mommy blogger.

But you probably already knew that, huh?

It’s partially because I have little interest in telling folks how to raise their kids when I’m still trying to figure out how to raise mine, and partially because my inspiration rarely flows when it comes to that stuff.

I’ve never been one of the cool moms…

We don’t all have matching outfits for Christmas pix. (Heck, I haven’t even done a Christmas CARD in the last 5 years…)

I couldn’t plan a themed birthday party if my life depended on it.

We don’t do finger painting, homemade halloween costumes, or crafts with rainbow-colored pipe cleaners.

Fun snacks? Um, I think there’s a shriveled up string cheese in the fridge if you’re dying.

Are you picking up what I’m putting down here?

So I couldn’t help but scratch my head when recently, the random photos I’ve been posting of our kids on Instagram have been getting a lot of engagement–even more engagement than my cute cow photos (which is saying a lot).

There was the photo of the kids sitting in their homemade pasture fort made from scraps of lumber from the wood pile.

The photo of the Three Amigos heading out to the pasture with their sack lunch.

And the photo of Mesa and Bridger toting off a refrigerator box to be turned into a covered wagon, then a cabin, and then a rocket.

The comments, messages, and likes I’ve received on these posts have made me think it’s time to dig into this (apparently radical) notion a little deeper.

How We (Accidentally) Started Raising Old-Fashioned Kids

Let me just start by saying I didn’t start doing any of this on purpose.

When Christian and I bought our homestead property in 2008, we were excited at the thought of raising our future children here, but I had absolutely no preconceived notions of what that would look like.

The kids have always come along with us, no matter what we doing. Not because we had some grand parenting philosophy guiding us, but rather because there’s a serious shortage of babysitters out here. And we have busy lives with a lot of moving parts, so it just made sense to pack the kids along with us, almost always.

As Mesa (our firstborn) grew, we just did what felt natural. When I’d milk, I’d bundle her up and she’d toddle along. When I’d ride my horse in the summer, I’d stick her in her playpen in the shady barn and let her nap. Bridger (our middle child) was snuggled into our tattered jogging stroller at 5-days old so he could accompany me to the barn to check on things. And Sage (our thirdborn) has been doing everything she can to keep up with her farm-raised siblings almost since the day she came out of the womb.

It was a lot of work at the beginning (putting on tiny mittens and boots x3 is tedious by any standard), but as they’ve grown, they’ve taking on more responsibility and have become pretty darn capable, if I do say so myself.

Mesa (9) and Bridger (6) do barn chores by themselves (unsupervised) each morning. They fill water, feed the chickens, check for eggs, move the horses, and feed the cats.

They can do almost all of the watering chores in the summer, pick vegetables for me in the garden, and scoop poop out of the barn (I still have to help them dump the wheelbarrow if it’s heavy, but no complaints here.)

They have responsibilities, and I’m a stickler for starting our homeschool routine by 8am each morning, but once school and chores are done, their day is mostly their own.

Boots are shoved on feet, and off they go with a hurried “Bye mom!”

And the house is suddenly quiet.

Outside, they run and scream. They ride bikes and throw balls. They poke sticks in the big water tank and pretend they are fishing. They climb on the hay bales and slide down the sides. They coerce the barn cats from their hiding spots and cuddle them until they melt in their arms. They pile up logs and bits of scrap wood to make wagons and forts and houses. They pretend with hammers, sticks, and shovels. They visit the cows in the pasture and scratch the goats. They embark on grand adventures behind house, weaving in and out of the tree rows. They collect rocks and birds nests and random treasures. They wade in the giant pasture mud puddle after a rain and utterly cake themselves in mud.

When I call them in for supper, they tend to be absolutely filthy, exhausted, and completely content.

Living 35+ miles from town has seriously limited the amount of playdates or structured kid activities we’ve been able to partake in thus far. And if I’m being honest, that used to bother me. A lot. I worried I was doing my kids a disservice by not driving them to all the lessons and Mommy and Me activities…

But I’m starting to realize the sort of unstructured childhood we implement here on the homestead, not because it was trendy, but rather because it was the only natural option, is actually a thing.

Who woulda thought?

The Mysterious Benefit of Dirt, Dust, & Animal Hair

I’ve been absolutely fascinated with all the articles I’ve seen floating around lately with scientific “proof” of an old-fashioned childhood (even though they don’t call it that). Our grandparent’s generation never even thought to question these things, but here we are in 2019 having such revelations such as:

The New England Journal of Medicine observed the link Amish farming communities and their reduced occurrence of asthma

A study that shows a rural childhood with exposure to animals and dust can boost the immune system and reduce occurrence of mental illness

This article in the Washington Posts that highlights the increase of childhood balance issues due to lack of movement throughout the day

This post on ADDitude discussing how playing outside can decrease ADHD symptoms in kids

The post on the World Economic Forum that encourages parents to let their children to be bored to increase creativity

It’s really easy for us, in all our modern wisdom, to brush off this sort of childhood as being a thing of the past, but can we afford to merely relegate it to the history books?

In my humble opinion, no we cannot.

Yes, we live in an entirely different time with more concerns and more dangers, but for the first time in history, we have a generation of kids who aren’t outside and aren’t moving their bodies. Unstructured play, rolling around in the grass, or playing in the dirt are identified as being crucial to human health and development, we can no longer dismiss them as the optional, silly parts of childhood.

If this trend continues, where will we be?

Free Time Magic

As I watch our kids race, imagine, explore, and create, I am fascinated to watch valuable traits naturally emerge. The kind of traits that will carry them far into adulthood.

They carry themselves with confidence. They find joy in their work (most of the time…) They are creative. They have the ability to solve problems on their own (like filling and carrying a heavy chicken bucket, and coercing the escapee horses back into the right pen).

Is it sunshine and roses all the time?

Well, of course not.

Sometimes they fight. Sometimes they get hurt. And sometimes they come to the house with a scraped knees and snot running down their face.

But that just comes with the territory.

I’m not claiming to have it all figured out, not by a long shot. And I’m usually extremely hesitant to give parenting advice, because, well, my oldest is only 9 and I still have yet to determine how this whole gig will turn out.

But I am completely and utterly convinced one of the most powerful parts of a healthy childhood lies is the unstructured free time.

It’s powerful stuff.

How to Start Implementing an Old-Fashioned Childhood for Your Kids

Whenever I talk about this, naturally, the logical question that arises next is, “And how exactly does one do this?”

Here’s my best advice:

Step One: Kick them out the door and leave them alone.

Step Two: Repeat the next day.

Kind of kidding…. but not really. I realize dangers do exist. And it’s quite likely that you’ll be able to let your kid ride their bike across town (unless it’s a very small town). Of course, you’ll need to weigh the risks in your particular situation and be mindful of them.

But we do kids a disservice by scheduling them too much.

Let them play.

Limit the screens.

Don’t fear their boredom– that’s where creativity is born.

Fight the urge micro-manage them.

Let them fail.

Teach them to wonder and ask questions.

Give them hours on a summer day to hunt insects, look at clouds, and roll in the grass.

Please don’t misunderstand. I’m NOT against putting your kids in activities (we do 4-H and a weekly homeschool co-op), but when it comes to the most meaningful activities we do as a family, I’ve found that my kids light up the most when they have the chance to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

For us, growing food together is more meaningful than finger-painting. Not that there’s anything wrong with finger painting… But my kids love knowing the green beans they planted are a crucial part of our family’s meal plan come July, they argue over who gets to smash the tomatoes into the food mill when we make sauce, and Mesa beams with pride when she can rattle off the tag numbers of our beef cattle by heart.

So no… I’m not a mommy blogger, and I won’t pretend for one minute that I know everything about parenting or raising kids. But I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Rogers when he said, “Play is the work of childhood.”

And I’ll venture to say that if we can parent like it’s 1955, our kids will be a whole lot better off.
