You grew up close to the Royal Family due to your father's position as a General, but you ran away from home after the agni kai against your best friend. Now, you've joined the Gaang and plan on doing your part in ending the 100-year war.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 4 Part 5
hiii here is part 3! hopefully you guys like it, i'm still getting used to writing a fic and keeping it published... rmr to like/reblog/comment if u like it, it's like feedback >.< again i do not own these characters or the atla universe this is simply fan fiction! about 2331 words btww

āYou donāt actually believe any of this stuff, do you?ā Sokka painfully reminds me of his disapproving attitude.
We were walking through the forest when we ran into an eerie man. He gave us an umbrella because a psychic in his village told him to hold it on his travels if he met strangers. A few minutes later, Sokka was too stubborn to believe the old man and couldn't stay dry.
Katara and I took one look at each other and immediately agreed. We have to go see this lady.
Events like these would be odd to anyone else, like Jet. But to Aang, itās pretty common. It must be his tie to the spirit realm, magic gravitates toward him.
A few weeks after joining the group and abandoning my post with the Freedom Fighters, I learned a lot of things about the people who stumbled upon that Fire Nation camp and changed the trajectory of my plans. Katara and Sokka are siblings from the Southern Water Tribe, and Aang is an airbender fromā¦ a while ago. He was frozen in the ice for one hundred years when Katara found him. For a kid 4 years younger than me, he's lived a hundred lifetimes. He's a prodigy. I can see why Zuko hadnāt caught up to them yet.
But I also donāt want to know what Zuko would do to Aang if he did catch up, or what Iād do if he did.
I donāt know my place in this group, or if I should tell them Iām a fire-bender, but for now, weāre standing in front of a circular red door at the strange village the eerie man told us to go to.
Apparently, Aunt Wu has been waiting for us.
āKind of, itās nice to know,ā I reply to Sokkaās earlier question. I've decided to keep my questions to Aunt Wu light, like Katara. Ask about love.
When we enter, a little girl in a pink robe and two buns on the side of her head greets us.
āIām Meng and Iām Aunt Wuās assistant." She motions towards the orange pillows on the right for us to sit down. Itās a small warm yellow waiting room with red lights, green accents, and a smooth wooden floor. Designed for someone to trust and open up. Cozy. āWould you guys like some tea or bean curd puffs?ā She offers.
āIāll try a puff!ā Sokka perks up. Meng leaves the room to retrieve the goods and we are left alone, sitting on the soft cushions.
Aang can't help but break the tempting silence, āYou donāt believe in fortune telling, Sokka?ā
āI donāt need some psychic to tell me about the future. Iām worried about right now.ā
I roll my eyes. āSokkaās a skeptic.ā
Before he can reply, Meng returns with the curd puffs and tea. She sets it down on the floor in front of Aang, making sure he can see her favor. āEnjoy!ā She blushes and scurries away to the other side of the room reserved for the people who work with Aunt Wu. Do they get predictions too?
Sokka drags the tray away from an unbothered Aang, āDonāt mind if I do.ā
Iād gotten used to Katara and Aang, they were fairly easy to travel with.
Katara is used to her brother and has developed a habit of preparing an apology about him to new people. In his defense, this is the first time he's lived outside his home. The Southern Water Tribe has been unable to fully recover from the last Fire Nation raid and the impacts still live today. The siblings are only used to the cold, quaint, and silent.
Aang, as the last air-bender, the Avatar, and a 12-year-old boy adjusting to being essentially gone from humanity for one hundred years in the ice... has other things on his mind.
It was Sokka who bothered me. He was unlike anyone Iād ever met before.
He had this incessant need to voice his opinions with no one's feelings in mind. Constant tunnel vision over any dispute with his younger sister betrayed his need to be a vicious warrior. A warrior with a boomerang and no sword on hand.
I've learned Sokka's a non-bender living in a world being corrupted by fire-benders and he's developed the necessary armor.
Heāll take the fishing job for us when weāre out of money. He did get us sick for being out in the storm, but itās the thought that counts, right?
The same reason he can be frustrating is the same reason he saved the village: he wonāt listen to anyone when his mind is set.
Heās true and noble, really. Itās admiring. I shake my head. Heās a conundrum.
An older woman wearing a floor-length yellow robe walks in through the circular door to Aunt Wu's working area. Her bright smile and waiting eyes are signs that she's the psychic. In a sweet tone, she gleefully asks, āWelcome! Who wants to go first?ā
I look at everyone, but no one speaks up. After a moment of silence, I raise my hand. āIāll go.ā
āPerfect, follow me!ā Aunt Wu guides me through the hallway and stops in front of the door to her space. She opens and Iām instantly greeted by dim lights and a small fireplace in the middle of the room. Colorful cushions to sit on and lit candles on the floor are placed circularly near a decorative stand with a bowl. A closer look and I see small and medium-sized bones at the very top.
āThis is my method." She must've seen my reaction and answered the questions all over it. "You choose a bone, throw it in a fire. The fire makes cracks in the bones, and I read the cracks. The bones never lie.ā She explains. āGo ahead.ā
I grab a random bone and, per her instructions, throw it in the fire. I watch as the flames engulf the calcium.
We sit in front of the fire on the berry-colored pillows as we patiently wait for the cracks to start forming. Aunt Wu is focused on the fortune while I look around the room, pretending Iām not waiting for her next words.
āDo you have any questions?ā
āI donāt know, I mean. You can just tell me what the bones say.ā I chicken out from my original plan.
By now, there are a few cracks in my chosen bone. Aunt Wu burrows her eyebrows and leans forward. āI see you... falling in love with a warrior.ā She pauses. āHis mother figure left his life early when he was just a little boy. He is an excellent swordsman and an even better friend.ā
Deflecting, I question her, āYou can see all of that from a bunch of cracks?"
āYes, youāll take part in a great battle with this love of yours. Remember to look in friendship.ā She gracefully leans her head up and down, signaling the end of the session.
āI will,ā I nod. āThank you, Aunt Wu.ā I stand up from my pillow and bow to her as a gesture of goodbye. I wonder if she knew what I wanted to ask.
When I exit the room through the door, Iām greeted by a flustered Sokka on the other end.
āSpying on me?ā I ask him, fighting a smile on my face.
āNo, I was just ā going to the bathroom!ā He spoke. Quickly, he marched to the restrooms beyond Aunt Wuās door. O-kay.
I walk back to the waiting room and tell Katara to go in after me. She jumps up from her seat in a giddy excitement and heads toward the back room.
I sit next to Aang on the soft pillows and search for the curd puffs. Sokka made them look so good.
āSo, what do you think sheās going to ask?ā Aang says as he hands me the snack.
āProbably about love, you know. Who sheās going to marry. If heās gonna be tall.ā I stuff the curd puff into my mouth and let the savory taste absorb my mind. These are good.
āYeah, haha, right. Wellā¦Iāll be right back.ā He stands up. āI gotta go to the bathroom!ā Apparently, everyone needs to right now. But itās the first stop weāve made in about an hour, so.
āSay hi to Sokka for me.ā I watch as he hurries away. A few seconds later, the boy in blue returns.
I hold a puff in my hand and point at the delicious snack for emphasis. āHey, these are great.ā
He sits next to me and grabs one for himself, eating it in one bite. He seems to be in thought. āAre you okay?ā I poke.
With his mouth stuffed he speaks, āYeah, Iām great.ā
ā
When we leave Aunt Wuās, Sokka is walking next to me as Katara and Aang lead the way through the village. He doesn't leave my side as we walk through the maze of Earth Kingdom commune layouts.
We finally reach the town square when Katara asks, āWhat happened to the sky?ā It looked like the citizens all took the day to meet here and stare upward in unison, murmuring to themselves.
A man standing nearby overhears her question. āEvery year, Aunt Wu reads the clouds and tells us the fate of our village.ā Please with his answer, he continues to watch the sky.
āCan you believe this guy?ā Sokka looks at me in disbelief. āNow the clouds?ā
Another villager, a woman, continues the explanation. āSheās going to tell us if the volcano will remain dormant.ā Her arm extends behind her and points to the harmless mountain.
Do they actually let Aunt Wu tell them if the volcano is going to erupt?
āDo you actually let Aunt Wu tell you if the volcano is going to erupt? Why?ā Sokka asks them. The other half of the time, we find ourselves agreeing.
āSheās coming, hush!ā Katara shushes her brother.
Aunt Wu walks right in the middle of the crowd as they make way for her, clapping and cheering. She begins to list the shape of the clouds, followed by a fortune for the town. Good harvest, twins are having a good year, and the volcano will not erupt.
āSheās been right for twenty years, maybe thatās a sign she can be trusted.ā I nudge Sokka with my elbow. He rolls his eyes in annoyance, Iāve been bought like the rest of them.
Katara and Aang are swept away by the current of cheers and idolization for Aunt Wu. Though, it seems like since we got here Aangās head has been anywhere else but, on the psychic, and her predictions.
āRightā¦ā A suddenly serious Sokka pulls me by my arm. He uses the wave of hysteria as his moment to step away from the group. Begrudgingly, I feel my heart drop into my stomach from his hand touching my arm. āJust in case she ends up, being right, I want to let you know thatā¦ uhā¦ā He lets the seconds fly by.
āSpit it out.ā
āI like you.ā He lets out.
Oh.
āAnd I know youāre not really like open to people in general,ā He continues. āItās been a few weeks and I hardly know about your life before the Freedom Fighters.ā Sokka pauses to read my face. āBut I like you. Ever since I first saw you.ā
I havenāt really shared anything about myself with them, true.
It was the morning after.
Fire Lord Ozai ordered his best General, my father, and his family, me, to attend a Royal Agni Kai. They didnāt happen much but when they did, it was required for all the important people of the Fire Lordās inner circle and their families to attend. Some twisted tradition.
When I arrived in the sea of crimson clothes and serious faces, I believed I was going to witness an agni kai between Zukoās Uncle Iroh and his brother. Who else could it be? I was wrong. I saw Iroh in the audience, and it felt like a thousand pounds had been rested on my chest. I wouldnāt believe what I had to endure next. What Zuko had to experience.
I would see Fire Lord Ozaiās fire-bending with my own two eyes, but it would be against my best friend, his son.
Now, Iām locking myself in my room in defiance. I donāt want to have anything to do with my father if heād let me see the cruelty up close and personal. He took everything I love and messed it all up in one swift choice. Rage wouldnāt begin to describe the feeling bubbling in my throat.
I wasnāt sure if I should go see Zuko, if his injuries are unsafe for visitors. Iād regret it as soon as the servant brought the letter the prince had sent to me.
As I close the door to my chambers behind the maid, I open the note for the sign of anything relieving.
Y/N,
Father banished me. I must go find the Avatar, so Iām leaving on a ship. Uncle is coming. I donāt know when Iāll see you again, so I wanted to let you know that I will restore my honor and come home to you. I love you
Zuko
I re-read the note three times before understanding what it is that heās telling me.
The bubble in my throat is slowly forming into a ball of tears, ready to pour out at any minute. Heās gone. Mutilated by his own father and then sent away. I hate him, I hate the Fire Lord. For everything heās taken away from me.
On the other end, I feel butterflies. The ones Iād been pushing down for the past year about Zuko. I didnāt want to ruin what we had or change it. We were nice as we were. I guess he was feeling it too.
But itās too late. Thereās no more time to sit and wonder if a boy likes you back. Itās not about that anymore. Itās about finally ending this war and stopping the Fire Nation. Ā
āSo, what do you think?ā Sokka looks at me, searching for an indication in my eyes.
āIā¦ā struggle to find the words, āBut I canāt. Not right now... Is that okay?ā Itās my turn to look at him and hope I didnāt ruin it.
But Sokkaās kind. āNo of course not. I understand. I just thought you should know. Iāll be here, yaknow, if you change your mind.ā He flashes that grand smile at me.
I didn't know if I wanted to start this here and now. He doesn't even know I'm a fire-bender. Would he feel the same way if he knew? I'm not ready for any answer.
Still, it was nice to know he liked me back. I could revel in that a bit.

A zutara rant about Aunt Wuās prediction.
As a proud Zutarian I personally love the idea about aunt Wuās prediction that she gave Katara about marrying a powerful bender is actually hinting at Zuko being the guy.
But I did see some antics mention ļæ¼āZuko isnāt a powerful bender and itās mentioned a lot that heās not that good, they didnāt even think he was a fire bender bah bahā
First off thatās very rude!
So letās over, analyze the fortune teller episode. Looking back on that episode we noticed that Aunt Wuās predictions are technically accurate, but not always as they seem. this gets confirmed by the end of the episode and how that one manļæ¼ smugly tells Sokka that ļæ¼the prediction, said the village wouldnāt be destroyed and it wasnātļæ¼. Or that one guy having a safe trip and almost getting attacked by a platypus Bear but the gang saves him, technically, he still had a safe trip.
So the whole prediction is ļæ¼ā I see great romance for you the man youāre going to marry, he is a very powerful bender.ā ļæ¼
(technically that wasnāt actually the ļæ¼whole prediction, considering A.ang was eavesdropping ļæ¼ and well Kat@ang is all about A.ang and his feelings but I digress)
So the first half I guess is more about your taste in romance. I donāt think or feel like the canon ļæ¼kat@ang is this great epic romantic personality. But hey iām willing to admit it could just be my taste. However the show does give us an example of a really powerful romances between Oma and Shu. In story lore of a romance that is so great it has been remembered for centuries and has a city named after them ļæ¼and ironically it has the famous enemies to lovers trope. ļæ¼hmm Interesting.
What I can defend though is the part that mentions ļæ¼āthe man you will marry is a very powerful benderā you see A.ang it is a very powerful bender and once he is a fully realized avatar, he will probably be considered the most powerful bender.ļæ¼ but like I pointed out Aunt Wuās ļæ¼ predictions have a catch or theyāre not always as you expect. And she said, A (not most) very powerful bender that could technically be ļæ¼anyone right? considering there are masters for all the different elements and being considered a master is still very impressive and seen as an accomplishment ļæ¼Even if you are not the avatar. So her future husband could be a possible Master. Adding the fact that most of the masters are old so this person could not even be fully realized ļæ¼yet, Insert Zuko.ļæ¼
So people mention that he isnāt that great of a bender or heās not that powerful and yes, the show does mention that, but also who tells us that?ļæ¼ Oh right. Hisļæ¼ dad the literal villainļæ¼.ļæ¼ The people that try to put him down tell him that he isnāt good enough.ļæ¼ personally, I also think the show try to contradict that by showing us ļæ¼momentsļæ¼.ļæ¼ļæ¼ for example in book one he did take down Zhao ļæ¼and showed him mercy. (when I watch the show, I think Zuko is actually holding back a lot of the time because he does have a consciences. his whole arc was kick started by him, having a conscience ļæ¼ and being empathetic ļæ¼so I donāt think itās crazy to imagine him holding back a little).ļæ¼ ļæ¼so when ļæ¼Ozai calls Zuko weak itās kind of similar to how he calls ļæ¼A.ang weak in the finale. ļæ¼But no one questions ļæ¼A.ang not being a powerful bender. Hmmm weird.
Also, the other reason why I think Zuko being the one in the prediction is just better for the story is because the idea that you can become a powerful bender just feels so satisfying to me. ļæ¼In the show people still need to find masters and grow their skills. we are shown that people get better at things over timeļæ¼ if they apply themselves. I think thatās a really good lesson. A similar lesson is already applied with Katara I may add, so itās pretty fitting in a way.ļæ¼
Also the fact that he learns the true meaning of fire bendingļæ¼ addļæ¼s a nice layer of depth. it isnāt just about the skill of fire bending Itās also about the mindset. It really goes to show how he really has become a better and powerful bender in the end.
#zutara#katara#anti kataang#zuko#zutarian#basically i smell cap whenever someone says omashu was not a parallel to zutara#the fortune teller episode was a zutara episode#Zuko is a powerful bender

"If Katara had not heard about the prophecy, then her feelings for Aang would have never changed" ah, zutarians and their lovely need to pretend their interpretation is the only correct one.
Literally anything could have made Katara realize she could have feelings for Aang - him getting all that attention from girls on Kyoshi Island, him shutting her out after Appa was kidnapped, his death at the end of book 2, all the girls having heart-eyes for him during "The Headband", etc.
I personally interpret Aunt Wu's visions as "True, but not set in stone" (hence the village only not being destroyed because the heroes took action instead of believing the prophecy could not possibly be wrong). Aang COULD be the strong bender Katara would marry. Or maybe they'd both marry other people, and Katara's husband would be a non-bender. Or maybe she'd marry a powerful bender, but Aang would be single - and because at that point Katara had not considered Aang as a possibility and he didn't have eyes for anyone else, that was the vision Aunt Wu had.
Hearing "There is a POSSIBILITY that MAYBE this guy you're friends with MIGHT be your husband someday" wouldn't have meant anything to Katara if she didn't already have genuine feelings for Aang (or at least the potential to develop said feelings). She'd just roll her eyes and say "Nope, we're just friends, the prophecy must be about someone else."
That's why it never comes back: the prophecy didn't make her have feelings for Aang, it was just the first of MANY times in which she truly stopped to think about what he meant to her and realized it could mean they'd eventually be more than friends.
"That's why it makes more sense for Zuko to be the strong bender of the prophecy" Ah, yes, because he's the only other strong bender in the whole story, and he totally didn't have his own separate romantic arc with someone else, riiiiight?
Only zutarians could think "This (mostly) unrequited crush being foreshadowed to eventually blossom into a proper romance is forced and can only be a red-herring, unlike claiming that these two characters that never had feelings for each other, THAT is the true love story here"
"Katara looked disappointed when Sokka pointed out Aang could be the bender she'd marry" Girl is literally looking at him in awe as the music swells, the fuck you talking about?

book one of atla is so tonally different from the rest of the show in that itās very monster of the week coded except the monsters are the earth kingdom villagers that exist to teach one of the main 3 a life lesson ā¦ sokka struggling with leadership and moral quandaries? jet is there to show him both sides of the coin! katara too rigid in her need to control the future? boom aunt wu is around to help!! aang needs to begin having a different understanding of the past as a fluid starting point rather than a memory and an edict all at once? ok well awesome there are some guys in the air temple to learn from!!! and also theyāre making their way to the northern water tribe slower than anyone else has ever done it before. itās very much ho hum last weekās episode has no bearing on this one and i think for this reason people donāt rank it against earth and fire but. give water her due. sheās a masterclass in character development and episodic television

Taken - Zutara - Part 21
First / Previous / Next / Masterpost
After Aang comes back with medicine, he acts strangely. He mentions having seemingly made a friend, but won't answer any questions. He then starts asking about Zuko of all people.
"I don't want to talk about it, Aang," Katara asks, as they head towards the mountain village. A fortuneteller, one who could accurately predict their intervention against a platypus-bear, could have some helpful advice for their journey. "Yes, we knew him before we found you. What's with the sudden interest, anyway?"
"Uh... No reason?"
When they got to the village, they were directed to Aunt Wu's. People welcomed them, even served them snacks. Aang was looking around, while Sokka stuffed his face. When the fortuneteller came out, Aang looked to Katara. She'd recommended the visit so Aang could learn more about his task, but she supposed she could go first.
As she sat with Aunt Wu, her hand out so the older woman could look at her palm, she waited.
"Despite your difficult job, your hands are quite smooth. Do you moisturize?"
Difficult job? Could Aunt Wu be talking about her job as a healer? "I have a special seaweed lotion a friend gave me... But I had to leave it behind when I left the South."
Wu ran finger carefully along a line of Katara's palm, humming softly.
Katara frowned. "What?"
The woman glanced up, her face sympathetic, despite her words. "You have a great romance in your life. The man you will marry..."
Her heart leaped in her chest. "What about him?"
Aunt Wu hummed again, her finger rubbing the line again. "You will have an amazing journey, one that can change the course of history. Tales will be told about you, about the challenges you overcome, and the sacrifices that he will make to be with you. He will be powerful, and your own strength will grow with his."
Her heart thundered, and she pulled her hand away. Aunt Wu looked at her in surprise. "Thank you, Aunt Wu. I think that's enough for today."
The woman stood, and led her back out. Katara barely heard what the fortuneteller said to Sokka, and didn't notice Aang leave. Instead, she rubbed at the line on her palm, her mind racing.
She knew, even without thinking his name, who she hoped it was. Already, their history was the stuff of storybooks. A captured princess, spirited away to an unfamiliar land, where a prince will eventually rescue her. But, he was working against them now. He was chasing them across the world, trying to capture the one person that gave Katara a chance of a peaceful life.
As Aang came out, she squeezed her palm to ground herself and looked at the younger boy.
"Anything helpful?"
Aang looked pretty pleased with himself, but side stepped the question. Nothing useful for the journey ahead, then.
"Let's get out of here," Katara said.
(Years later, when Katara is telling Zuko about what he had missed, he tells her about the volcano. Aunt Wu had predicted destruction, and the village had been evacuated what seemed to be mere hours after Katara and the others had left.)
They run into Bato not long after leaving Makapu. He's shocked to see them, and has plenty of questions for them.
How did they get there? How had they found the Avatar? Were they alright? Was Zuko with them?
Katara and Sokka explained as much as they could, Katara studiously avoiding the topic of Zuko. When Sokka began to talk about Zuko attacking them, she left the room, standing outside with Appa.
Bato came to find her after a bit, leaning against the bison with her.
"I know there's no way to prove it," he starts, looking up at the sky, "but I'm sure there's been some kind of misunderstanding. When he started telling up about war movements, about the best places to join with the Earth Kingdom Army, he knew what he was sacrificing. If word ever gets out, he'll not be the 'banished prince'. He'll be the traitor. As hard as it would be for him, I think he gave up on going home. Have you tried talking to him? Since you left, I mean."
Katara felt like there were rocks in her stomach. "No..."
"Maybe, the next time you see him, try to talk to him. I'm sure everything will be fine."
She breaths deeply, and goes back. They agree to go ice dodging and move on after, though Sokka wanted to go see their father. They didn't have time. As much as Katara tried to teach Aang waterbending, her form was all self taught and adapted from firebending. He needed a real master to teach him.
She could probably use a few lessons herself.

ATLA Book 1 Character Stats
One thing I have been wondering for a while is how many lines of dialogue each character has in ATLA. I recently figured out an easy way to calculate it, so here are the stats for Book 1.
There are 3490 total lines of dialogue in the season. They are divided up as follows:

I'm rewatching Atla and I realized I have zero idea what I am supposed to take away from the fortune teller episode. Like is she legit or a scammer? Because all her fortunes came true through the characters actions like in that's so raven. Sokka actually reminds me of Raven because in trying to prove aunt wu wrong he inadvertently shows that her fortune was right which I believe the villagers pointed out at the end of the episode.
But then the show seems to contradict and prove you can write your own destiny. But it also shows that even pass the episode all aunt wu said was true, like Sokka getting in his own way a lot or Katara ending up with a powerful bender and she is still kicking in legend of Korra.
Also other question do you think Zuko would believe in aunt wu like Katara or be a sceptic like Sokka. Because he seems to believe in destiny and things being pre-planned but I've seen people say he would be a skeptic but I think it depends on when Zuko meets her.
Sorry if this is a lot. I should probably just write it off as comedic and move on.
I think the message we are supposed to get is that we make our own destiny, which sometimes means that we create a self-fulfilling prophecy. That message is kinda muddled because the creators wanted to also use it to promote KA, and there are a lot of excellent zutara metas out there on that already so I won't rehash that. I'll just say that I really dislike the way the episode takes advantage of Katara's faith by portraying her as silly for believing in destiny - unless it's about Aang, that is.
I think the question of what Zuko would believe is more interesting, and I agree that it depends on where he is in his arc. Yes, he talks a lot about destiny, especially early on, but if book one Zuko met Aunt Wu, he probably would only listen if she told him things he wanted to hear, anything that could reaffirm what he already believed about his destiny being to capture Aang and return to the Fire Nation as Ozai's son and heir. I imagine that if she told him something that contradicted that, he would absolutely refuse to believe it, the way he refused to believe Iroh when he tried to tell him the truth about Ozai and his mission.
Book two Zuko I think might be kind of interesting. If Zuko ran into Aunt Wu during his Zuko Alone era, for example, he might be more interested in hearing what she had to say. Book two Zuko is searching for inner guidance and much more open to spiritual road signs.
Book 3 Zuko would probably not be interested, honestly. Zuko in book 3 spends a lot of time confused, but he's not looking for guidance from outside himself anymore. He's looking inward. He can't reconcile who he is with who he wants to be, and that's his big crisis. He's all about being true to himself, and no one else is going to tell him what his destiny is. And I think that remains true post canon. I do think Zuko comes out of the series more spiritually open and aware, but I think as a character he is very centered on reconciling his actions with his own beliefs, so I can't see him looking to someone else for guidance on his future.

š¬ and š !
š ā¢ share a head canon for one of your favourite ships or pairings
I've talked about this before but I always imagined Aang and Katara spending the first year after their marriage traveling across the world to visit all their friends--Katara's family, the Northern Water Tribe, Teo and the Mechanist at the Temple, the Fire Nation school where Aang taught the kids to dance, Haru and his family, Uncle Iroh, King Bumi, the Freedom Fighters, Suki and the Warriors, the Swampbenders, Hei Bai's village, maybe even a stop at Makapu to confirm Aunt Wu's prediction all those years ago, etc. I just want them to spend their first year wrapped in friendship, hospitality, joy, and adventure as a celebration of their forever love!!!
š¬ ā¢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character
Zuko is not the sage, wise, reasonable advice-giver in the group. Just because the guy grew up under Uncle Iroh's supervision does not mean he possesses the same qualities.
From the show, we know Aang can be that person, Katara of course can be that person, Suki could be that person if she has the full backstory to the situation, Sokka will probably be jokey/annoying about it but he can pull it off if it must be done, and even Toph can give good advice depending on the occasion. But Zuko is not the advice guy. He's the guy who awkwardly pats you on the back and says 'that's rough buddy'. I've seen Zuko depicted as the wise, levelheaded, therapist friend in so many fanfics recently, and I just...don't get it, lol.

I was thinking about Aunt Wu from Avatar the Last Airbender and then I suddenly went
Wait
Hold on
THIS IS A WORLD WHERE MAGIC IS REAL
Like. There are people who shoot lightning and dance with dragons
Sokka's first girlfriend turned into the F u c k i n g M o o n
Spirits are real and they definitely fuck with the real world
Why WOULDNT there be a genuine Divination expert walking around???
Point is, in the context of the setting, it's completely reasonable to assume Aunt Wu is the real deal.
...that village still should have kept sending someone to check the volcano though. Genuine Seer or not, divination is no substitute for common sense.

Whatās in a Name: Earth Kingdom Pt. 1
Kyoshi Island
I mentioned in this post here that the name Kyoshi can have many meanings depending on the characters used.
For the island of Kyoshi, Iāll go with the characters shown on the Kyoshi statue, since thatās the landmark that welcomes newcomers to the area.
These characters are äŗ¬å£«, which can be translated as āSamurai Capitalā. This is obviously in reference to Kyoshi Island being an island full of samurai-like ladies.
Omashu
The Chinese characters for OmaĀ are å„„ēŖ, which means āMysterious Carnelianā. Carnelians are a type of semiprecious stone. Oma was one of the first human Earthbenders, so she is very much a āmysterious rockā.
Also, Oma sounds like āeommaā (ģė§), which is Korean for mother, and she is the mother of Earthbending.
The Chinese character for ShuĀ is č, meaning relax. Oma and Shu designed āThe Cave of Two Loversā so they could have a place with which to relax together.
Senlin Village
Senlin Village was the village that was being terrorized by Hei Bai, the angry forest spirit.
Senlin (ę£®ę) is Mandarin for āforestā.
Thatās it.
Gaipan Village
Gaipan Village was the village that Jet and the Freedom Fighters wanted to flood.
The Mandarin term gaipan (ę¹å¤) refers to the act of overruling a judgement. This could be in reference to Sokkaās rejection of and interference in Jetās plan to flood the Fire Nation-occupied village.
Taku Village
Taku is the village that the Gaang took shelter in when Sokka and Katara were sick. Itās also where the herbalist and frozen frogs reside.
Taku can mean a variety of things, depending on the characters used.
The characters that I feel are most relevant to this setting are the Chinese charactersĀ åēŖ,Ā meaningĀ ādespair caveā. Considering how Katara and Sokka spent that episode...
Pohuai Stronghold
The Pohuai Stronghold was a Fire Nation fortress located in the western Earth Kingdom.
The stronghold acted as a base of operations for the Yuyan Archers. It was also where Aang was imprisoned when he was captured by Zhao.
Pohuai (ē “å) is Mandarin forĀ ādestructionā. An appropriate name for a military base built on conquered land.
Makapu Village
Makapu is the fortunetelling village that Aunt Wu and Meng call home.
The villageās name might have been inspired byĀ MakapuŹ»u, the extreme eastern end of the Island of OŹ»ahu in the Hawaiian Islands.
Makapuāu is Hawaiian forĀ ābulging eyeā.
Both locations are surrounded by volcanic rock.
Like what Iām doing? Tips always appreciated, never expected. ^_^

Uncharted Waters - Fortunes, Friends, and Neighbors
āWhat if she wonāt help us?ā Zuko asked when they were alone again.
āStop!ā Katara huffed. āItās going to be fine. Maybe Aunt Wu wonāt read our fortunes, but that doesnāt mean she canāt help us figure out what our next steps should be. At the very least, she might be able to help us find a place to stay for the night.ā
āThat guy said there arenāt any inns,ā Zuko said gesturing over his shoulder with his thumb.
āAnd his daughter said that someone will let us stay with them,ā Katara countered. āAnyway, weāre already here. We should go to Aunt Wu before we give up, at least.ā
āI didnāt say anything about giving up. Iām just saying, donāt get your hopes up.ā
āThank you, Daichi Downer,ā Katara said sarcastically. āYou know you donātĀ haveĀ to be so negativeĀ allĀ the time.ā
āWhatever,ā Zuko grumbled.
The heat of the day was on them by the time they reached Makapu. Two nights of imperfect sleep on the road hadnāt left either of them with much patience. So, when they arrived at the townās center, all they wanted was to get to Aunt Wuās and ask for her help. Unfortunately, Katara was, indeed, still very recognizable among the villagers. They came up to her, asking about the Avatar, asking what brought her back, asking if she was intending to see Aunt Wu because āyou know she isnāt seeingĀ anyĀ clients right now. But if youĀ doĀ get her to speak with you, could you ask her aboutā¦?ā
Zuko drew more than a few curious looks. A few people thought they recognized him as the third member of the Avatarās entourage, and after the third or fourth time of telling them that no, Zuko wasĀ notĀ her brother Sokka, Katara gave up and asked if Aunt Wu was in town. It had occurred to her that maybe Aunt Wu wasnāt seeing clients because she was actually away. It turned out to not be the case. Aunt Wu may have been turning away clients, but she had been seen out and about in town as recently as that morning. Katara thanked everyone for their information, before grabbing Zukoās sleeve and dragging him up the road towards Aunt Wuās house.

The Fortuneteller
(A title which I am itching to divide into three words instead of two because boy does 'Fortuneteller' look stupid - seriously, stare at it for a bit and see how fast it starts looking like Fortun Eteller)
The last couple of episodes have had a contemplative character, so I'm rooting for this one to be a silly one. Also more Sokka please. Poor guy gets demoted to one liners in the B-plot whenever Aang is the main focus.
Episode Time!
We start this episode off with a potential love interest for Sokka.
I had completely forgotten that Katara used to have a necklace. I'd also completely forgotten that she'd lost it. When did she lose it?
Aang-o-vision has a pretty heavy rose-tinted filter - literally.
Told you it was a love interest.
The NOISE Sokka makes when the fish slaps him! I love it. Hang on I'm going to rewind and listen to it again.
Yep. Still as good the second time.
Oh wow! Aang just got Momo-zoned. Gotta say I'm not a fan of a romantic relationship between Aang and Katara at this point, so I'm all for some Momo-zonage.
Platypus bear! Finally some hybrid animals. I was beginning to wonder if that would ever come back.
Is this guy a martial arts master or an idiot?
I'm leaning towards idiot.
Friendly reminder of Appa's size. That's a lot of molars. No canines or incisors? Guess he's an obligate herbivore.
Is sniffing eggs something that people do? I get sniffing melons or other produce, but eggs?
Yep. Floppy hat guy is an idiot.
Aang buddy you might want to get that checked out.
And with a mighty squelch, the egg fulfills this episode's Beat Up Sokka quota.
Appa shakes!
Those are weird ducks.
I don't know a thing about anime, but that's the most anime-looking guy I've seen in this show. Is this show an anime?
Meng-o-vision is red-tinted. Probably doesn't bode well.
Also, Meng could give Zuko some lessons on how to style Pipi longstocking hair. Someone with more photoshop skills than me needs to make a Zuko with Meng hair.
"Don't be modest, they're huge!" Presented without comment. I'm not going to say a thing. But we all thought it.
Katara is totally the kind of girl who would fall for fortune telling. We've seen (multiple times) that she is gullible. Actually, now that I think about it, we've had multiple episodes where Katara gets swept up in something a healthy dose of skepticism would have guarded her from - Jet and The Great Divide come to mind. The writers are really hammering the 'Katara is susceptible to romantic nonsense and Sokka is a science-minded skeptic' message home. Is this going to play some bigger part in the show going forward? Why else would we be on version number (arguably) 3 of this same plot?
Aang and Sokka took off their shoes, but Katara didn't. Huh.
Pinky out. Classy.
I am not digging the Aang x Katara stuff in this episode. I'm with Sokka on this one - let's pretend it was a stellar bathroom break.
Aunt Wu is being unnecessarily antagonistic to Sokka. First he gets an egg on his head, then Momo steals his bean puffs, now Aunt Wu tells him his life's going to suck. I should have been more specific when I hoped for a Sokka episode. I didn't mean a beat up Sokka episode.
Aang. Priorities honey. Honestly, Aang casually dismissing his destiny after all that build up did get a laugh out of me.
A god-like figure coming to have his fortune read and only wanting to know about his love life would give me a headache too.
Add malicious signage to the Beating Up Sokka list.
"The fluffy bunny cloud forecasts doom and destruction." I bet that's the first time that sentence has appeared in the English language.
These people are stupid. Blazing Saddles style 'common clay of the New West' stupid. It would take, what, a day? to run a visual check on the volcano. But nope. Too much work. Listen to me I'm morphing into Sokka.
Katara giving off some serious fangirl vibes.
Katara is officially addicted to fortune telling.
Live footage of me watching these village idiots.
Add duck to the list of Things Which Assault Sokka. Gotta love those duck noises though.
Sokka is getting dangerously close to advising negging here. Also Meng deserves better. Her poor pigtails droop in disappointment. Girl has sentient hair - she deserves better.
Papaya? When you don't like papaya? Just because some old lady said so? Too far. That's not even teenage nonsense; that's tweenage nonsense. I kind of feel like sending Katara to her room. Actually it's just like that one line Log Man said in the Jet episode. Something like 'He tells us what to do and how to think and things all turn out right.' Outsourcing your decision-making. Which, by the way, is both nonsense and cult-like. Then again, the lost boys freedom fighters pretty much worshipped Jet the way this village worships Aunt Wu, so... parallels?
So if this guy got the panda lily himself, doesn't that mean that he recently went up the mountain? Couldn't he have had a peak inside while he was up there? Would have taken an extra 20 seconds.
"Flowers are fine once you're married" Somebody get this boy to Victorian times. If he ever sees an ankle he'll self-combust.
You have a flying bison. Why don't you fly up instead of climb?
This is totally live action fire copy-pasted in to the animation. There has got to be a more technical term for that than copy-pasted.
Raise your hand if you saw the twist with the volcano coming. (I did I swear. Blue spirit was an outlier).
Forget Appa, why didn't Aang just fly up?
"They just won't listen to reason." "But they will listen to Aunt Wu." So the mountain comes to Mohammed. I guess talking to people in a way they understand / will listen to is a good lesson for an avatar to learn. I thought he'd learned that one in The Great Divide though. Either way this episode is getting increasingly frustrating.
Can Meng get a hug? She seems astonishingly self-aware and emotionally mature for a kid. Also way too smart for this podunk town. I may rescind the hug in light of the stalking.
Well, it's not exactly subtle, but at least volcanic doom isn't a fluffy bunny.
Look at those yummy purples. Finally an episode where it's light enough to have a beautiful sky. My collection of wallpapers was suffering.
Digging a lava trench might work, if the volcano is going to put out a gallon or two of lava. This must be a baby volcano.
Nevermind.
The ashes effect feels oddly 3-D.
I guess to an avatar this kind of challenge is small potatoes.
Totally ignoring the Aang x Katara stuff for a minute, I'm with Sokka on this one too, because I also had forgotten that Aang is a superbender. He didn't even need to go glowy.
If I lived in this village that redesign would absolutely give me nightmares. Are those mega claws of doom structurally sound?
I am going to punch this man.
Aunt Wu's final speech to Aang makes me think that at least she's not indulging in her own product as it were. I suppose a con artist (whose services are free, so, just jerking around a village for shits and giggles?) is better than an actual believer?
MENG!!!
Final Thoughts
This episode has me thinking about stories. Part of the reason Katara wants to believe in nonsense like fortune telling is because she is someone inclined to listen to / believe in stories. I think the opening monologue of the first episode mentioned something about her grandmother's stories. Katara was raised on stories and very much took them to heart as more than just entertainment. And you can't blame her for believing the conceits of stories could be possible in their world, not after the events of episode one dumped the star of those stories in her lap. Just so long as she doesn't confuse a belief in stories with a belief in happy endings. There is a war going on in their world, and judging by the stuff that the show did not shy away from discussing or implying in episodes like The Southern Air Temple and The Storm, I am willing to bet good money that there will be a couple of unhappy endings ahead. Not permanently unhappy; this is a kids' cartoon. But there will probably be setbacks and disappointments.
Would Katara have astrology nonsense in her dating profile?
"The fluffy bunny cloud forecasts doom and destruction" is going to be incorporated into my daily vocabulary.
Platypus + bear are interesting choices for a hybrid animal, since a platypus is about 15 normal animals smashed together anyway. A platypus bear is the swiss army knife of animals. Or the Mr. Potato Head.
At first I thought that Aunt Wu was a benevolent meddler (see putting together the couple with the panda lily), but she also advised that one guy to never bathe, which doesn't benefit anyone in any way that I can see. So I've concluded that she's a Bumi level ("it's pretty fun messing with people") shit-stirrer instead. Her services may be free, but she manages to pay for a very big house, an assistant in Meng, and anime guy the bodyguard(?) so I guess grateful villagers give her donations? However she's doing it, she's got it made.
There was some sort of running theme with those large blue-billed ducks that lived in the village. If that was meant to have more meaning than just a running visual gag, I didn't pick up on it.
Meng had a surprising amount of depth and insight for what (I assume) is a one-episode character. Stalking aside, I liked her.
This episode's humourous look at the stupidity of the village (in fact the science denial of the village) is not as funny as it would have been in a pre-covid denial, pre-antivax, pre-"global warming is a hoax" world. A shallow viewing of this episode is still funny because the villagers are just SO dumb (except Meng), but the more you think about the villagers' actions and the conclusions they reach at the end of the episode (to not change AT ALL - at least the tribes made up in The Great Divide, a similarly idiot-filled episode), the more you morph into Sokka. These people have denied reality so hard that it's frustrating rather than funny to watch. Their head in the sand approach is not cute anymore.
I really wanted to like this episode. Like I said before, I wanted a goofy fun episode after the one-two punch of the last two episodes, but this one rapidly went from goofy to frustrating. I can't tell if it's because I'm not the target audience (i.e. too adult) or if it's because much of the world is currently drowning in various forms of misinformation and science denial. I know this episode isn't supposed to be deep - it's supposed to be setup for Aang & Katara as a (hopefully very distant) couple. That's all. And the message at the end about shaping your own destiny (i.e. taking an active part in your life) is a good message, and thematically relevant to the avatar, who presumably is at least somewhat responsible for shaping the whole world's destiny. But damn if this episode doesn't make my teeth itch.
Pros: Sokka had some great lines. Appa got to shake. There were pretty backgrounds. The noise Sokka made when he got slapped by the fish was a thing of beauty.
Cons: Aang and Katara are not allowed to date until they're 35. I will smack each villager individually upside the head with a science textbook. Meng deserved better.
Maybe I'm just not in the mood for this episode. I'll stick it on the rewatch list just for the Sokka fish noise.

A predestined match
You were one of Toph's students and also one of her best friends.Ā
So when the Gaang decided to take a trip to Makapu Village for Aunt Wu to read Zuko, Suki and Toph's future, you were invited.Ā
You didn't have high expectations but you liked to laugh at Sokka. It was clear that he hated that village with all his heart.
You arrived in Makapu in the evening and camped in the forest, and the next morning you set off for Aunt Wu's house.Ā
She was happy to see Aang and Katara again and to meet the rest of you but she wasn't too happy to see Sokka again.Ā
You laughed seeing how much hatred the two looked at each other and accidentally bumped into someone.
Ā You apologized and helped the girl up from the floor.Ā
You looked at each other blushing but were interrupted by Suki who was impatient to know her future.
While Aunt Wu was reading Suki's future, Meng brought you snacks. She congratulated Aang and Katara on their new relationship and winked at Aang. Aang blushed and Sokka chuckled.Ā
You, Toph and Zuko started talking about superstitions and the supernatural. Although Zuko fully believed that there were signs foreshadowing certain events, you and Toph were skeptical.Ā
your debate was interrupted by Meng who complimented your big ears which made you blush.
Ā Your friends started to laugh heartily.Ā
You thanked the girl for the original compliment and complimented her hair. She blushed and started playing with her tails.Ā
You chuckled, in your defense the girl did seem cute.Ā
You invited her to sit next to you.Ā
While Aunt Wu was reading your friends' fortunes, you continued to talk to Meng.
Finally it was your turn.Ā
Aunt Wu said you picked the love bone. You threw it into the fire, and the fire rose up to near the roof, which worried you a little.
Ā Aunt Wu looked at the flames with a frown and told you that you recently met your future wife, that she is not a bender but has a gift given by the spirits.Ā
When you left the room, you noticed that Aang was helping Meng spy on you.
You rolled your eyes at their silly excuses.Ā
You looked at Meng with an evil grin and told her that a future fortune teller should be able to guess what's going on in the room without spying.
Ā And then it hit you.Ā
Meng had received the gift of fortune-telling from the spirits and you had met her today.Ā
Meng blushed and told you stammering that she knew it was you since she saw your ears.Ā
Aang ran off to tell the others and you asked her out trying to look disinterested.

Katara can tell Sokka is only just avoiding murdering that guy out of frustration because they're on Nickelodeon and this isn't the sequel series so they can get away with direct on-screen murder just yet.
But I do personally want to punch this guy? Like, he's so insistent on making sure he can keep just blindly believing in Aunt Wu's predictions that he completely ignores the fact that the only reason the village wasn't destroyed was because the Gaang literally manipulated things to get Aunt Wu to make a new prediction about the volcano so everyone would actually listen and help them with the trench, which while it didn't stop the lava, did seem to stall it enough to help Aang actually stop it?

'The Fortuneteller' Oh, I knew I was going to hate this episode. It's the first episode that actually has some Kataang (they needed 14 episodes to get there, when Jetara needed like 30 seconds). And the way it's all framed is just so awful.
Okay, I'll just remind everyone what Katara says about Aang at the start of the episode: Aang's just a good friend. *friendly pat on the head* A sweet little guy. Just like Momo. These are Katara's REAL feelings towards Aang. Everything that follows afterward is just narrative dogpiling of 'breaking down this girl's resistance to make her realize that this guy is actually the one for her'. Fuck that shit. Can we be rid of this 'if you just persist hard enough sooner or later she's going to say yes'? Because that is what the ATLA narrative did to Katara and it SUCKS.
It's also so insulting because Meng's one sided crush on Aang is something that she has to 'unlearn', while the same is not true for Aang's crush on Katara. It's pretty fucking sexist, and it would have actually been a nice reversal of the tired old trope if Aang accepted Meng's affections while letting go of Katara. But no we can't have that. Our precious male protagonist has to have things go his way, and the girls will just have to forsake their own agendas to accommodate his desires.
Aang is just so irritating in this episode, from listening in on Katara's private conversation (30 Jerk Points) to acting like an asshole towards Meng and actually physically shoving her out of the way (30 Jerk Points)
Katara's blind trust in Madame Wu is a little annoying, but at the same time, I can't really blame her - being from South Pole, I don't think she has much experience with fortunetellers. Her obsession with the readings gets way out of hand, but everyone is various shades of annoying in this episode, including Sokka with his advice on girls - something that nobody should ever ask Sokka for. (all of Sokka's success with the ladies is essentially him 'failing upward')
I'm not sure how to grade Sokka's plan to save the village. I mean, it did work, but not the way he had intended and it relied on Aang's bending which was not part of the plan. But the village was saved. I feel like I maybe have denied Sokka some credit earlier, for example leading the Freedom Warriors into traps, so I'm willing to give Sokka a point here. Sokka is now a generous 1 out of 3 for plans.
Okay, finally to address the fortuneteller in the room. For endangering the lives of the villagers, Aunt Wu gets 50 Jerk Points. For emotionally manipulating Katara and pushing her towards Aang - 150 Jerk Points. Throw this old witch into the volcano, please.
Jerk Points:
Ozai - 300 Bumi, Aunt Wu - 200 Zhao, Aang - 120 Iroh - 110 Jet - 100 Zuko - 70 Momo - 30
