please tell me how to properly get into the high republic era because this is the only part of star wars i am completely unfamiliar with and it's starting to drive me insane to the point i'm rewatching the acolyte

long story short, the high republic is cut into three sections that are meant to mirror the skywalker saga. you have phase 1 that was published first, meant to be the OT. you have phase 2 published 2nd, meant to be the prequels (it takes place a couple hundred years prior and is also my favorite). and then phase 3 that's almost done publishing right now, meant to be the sequels.

i use this link from the star wars website to help me keep track of all the books, comics, and other tie-in stuff in the high republic. i don't fully agree with the reading order, but we'll get into that later. i can also send you personal recommendations from my experience reading through if you would like!

there are adult novels, young adult novels, and middle grade books. as well as comic runs and audio books. i can give you an mp3 for the audio books! they're really well produced and you can also buy printed scripts if it's hard to listen to/you get distracted.

reasonable take:

you're gonna be familiar with vernestra and she's in phase 1 (OT), so if you want to start there and meet her as a young jedi knight/master that's a great place to start!!

there are a lot of books and comics, it was really overwhelming for me at first and i still haven't read past the first book. but the first book was really, really good and i loved it.

you start with light of the jedi (basically, a new hope) and you meet a bunch of new characters, so that can be a lot at first. i recommend keeping tracking of the main main characters: avar, elzar, bell, loden, marchion, and burryaga!

biased take:

i started reading phase 2 (prequels) because of the acolyte, and i loved it. i skipped over phase 1 bc i just wanted to read chronologically

if you chose to do start with phase 2, i suggest starting with path of deceit. that's where you meet marda (my icon!!) and is also helps to establish the entire plot of the high republic going forward. it's basically like starting star wars w/ the phantom menace.

it's the shortest of the 3 phases, so there's less material to cover and it's easier to get through

the characters in path of deceit remind me so much of the acolyte that it's no longer funny. osha and marda are the same to me (and also they should kiss). the mother is like if mother aniseya was worse. arguably, yana is like mae. the story focuses on jedi vs non-jedi and centers on two cousins who are both orphans, like hello?????????? (also there's are two separate padawans called enya keen and rooper nitani who both remind me so much of jecki)

i actually have annotations in my copy of path of deceit that reference the acolyte bc i was watching and reading in tandem

i personally have enjoyed reading phase 2 first and am recommending that to all my friends lol, but do what speaks to you!!
