31 Days of Horror Day 5: Clutch
Tree roots stretched below the old forest road, cracking the ancient pavement that no one bothered to repave for years. If not decades, Herb thought, gritting and grinding his teeth. The undercarriage of his car rattled like loose change in a dryer; suspension coils long over due for repairs jolting against the uneven ground to rearrange his spine.
The radio spat out bursts of language amongst the drone of static; thin peels of music, indistinguishable voices with unintelligible words. Rising and falling, pushing and pulling, lost in the white noise of a transmission grasping for connection. Herb's skin twitched from quivering nerves, his whole body taut like a bow ready to be fired. His fingers twitched to turn it off, making him curl them tighter around worn vinyl of the steering wheel; he dared not do it.
He sucked in a deep breath of musky, humid air. At least it was cool. The AC in his car had not worked almost as long as he had owned it, and despite many a brutal summer he'd never felt the need to get it repaired. He could always open the windows, enjoy the rush of air from barreling down 95. And like hell he was going to do that creeping in the middle of the woods at half past midnight, in the middle of absolute nowhere.
The tires crunched and bounced, the engine hummed. A country singer crooned, there and gone. In the woods, the trees groaned and creaked from the immense weight of an unseen being.
He swore, nipped the tip of his tongue when jaw snapped shut. He caught his breath and held it. A hand darted out to switch off the high beams and plunge the world back into darkness, only given a faint glow by the headlights. It was enough, out there. And maybe whatever it was following after him had not noticed.
Another spattering of static, another voice folding out of the noise. Someone searching for another soul to hear, shouting into the void: won't stop. A logical person would have caught the cadence, the studio perfect pop, even buried in the disjointed cacophony. But her voice was soon swallowed whole and Herb only heard what he wanted to hear, venturing deeper into the hungry forest devouring Pinefield, Connecticut.
Out here the town thinned. A cluster of residential streets turned to one or two turned to nothing for miles, leaving just the ancient trees in their eternal vigil and the creatures lurking in the underbrush. The only humans for miles were those who passed over peaceful hotels in a small town, thinking they could make it to Massachusetts before stopping for the night. But those who called Pinefield home were...strange. Strange in ways he could not put a finger on, when he had ventured into a diner for a quick dinner.
Everyone spoke in a round about sort of way. The kind of way people get when there is something hanging over their heads but they will not talk about it; they will not look it in its face. No one would look him in the eye, their smiles stretched too thin when they spoke to him. In the end he had gotten his fries and shake to go.
He glanced at the dashboard clock. Quarter to midnight. The darkness wrapped around the car. It seeped into the cracks in the doors, under the hood, slipping between the insulation and rubber tubing meant to keep it all out.
The thing in the woods strode closer, the ground rumbling and shaking with every silent foot fall. Herb's heart jumped in his throat; something flicked a switch in his brain. He punched the high beams back on into blinding clarity (he could see it he could see the form of an ambling creature in the forest of trees out of the corner of his eye), and he pulled at the gear shift, muscle memory falling away to make room for a baser instinct. What need did prey animals have, to know how cars worked?
The car shuddered. The car stalled. Herb pulled it into park in the middle of the road.
Herb sat in the car, still now. He stared straight ahead at the open road, miles away from a quaint little house with its quaint little people. Heart fluttered and breath labored, chest locking up. The thing in the woods turned its trajectory. It was getting closer. Herb could only close his eyes as he waited; for his car to start. For the damn thing to show itself. The radio continued to spit discordant noise.
The trees stopped their creaking. The world stilled. He dared a moment to crack open his eye, and there, in the middle of the road, stood a deer. It stared back at him with marble black eyes, ears alert and twisting this way and that for signs of any danger. Poised to run away, its very stance light and delicate and still so very powerful. Herb blinked his eyes open and relief flooded through him, the current so strong it ached.
He waited for it to pass. It would gather its bearings and leap back into the woods to live another day. And so too would he, move on to the next town and find a place to sleep. If any hotels were still open with vacancies, anyway. He could stay the night in his car if he had to, that was fine by him. He just needed out of Pinefield and never look back at the damn town again.
But the deer did not move. It did not begin a slow amble back into the woods. It adjusted its footing, watching - studying - with eyes that sat too forward in its face.
No. It did not leave. Instead it simply smiled.

The other week, I got the itch to make a radio-themed playlist. I wrote down all the songs I could think of that would fit the theme, and then decided to crowdsource further suggestions via Facebook. After adding everyone else’s suggestions to my own, I began compiling the playlist. The original version had 80+ songs on it. I narrowed it down first by getting rid of artist repeats (there were several bands/artists who had several songs that fit the theme; I narrowed it down to one from each), then by getting rid of other songs which just didn’t flow well with the rest. (Not because I didn’t like them, necessarily, just cuz they didn’t fit well in the final playlist.)
So, here’s the final version. 52 songs that are about radio or at least mention it in some way. Full tracklist under the cut.

The third part of the Monster Universe Audio Drama prologue is here! In this episode, we are introduced to Abraham Van Helsing (yes, that Van Helsing), but don’t think you have it all figured out yet. We still have a short time before we hit the pilot. However, everything you’ve heard will play into the main narrative.
The story so far: Moria Le Fanu landed in America with a dire warning (trailer #1). Nikola Tesla completed work on Wardenclyffe Tower and plans to schedule a transmission test which caused Thomas Edison to make his own alarming announcement (trailer #2).
Coming this Winter, The Monster Universe Audio Drama is a full cast radio play, featuring the vocal talents of: Andrea Laing (Adult Swim Yule Log, Atlanta, Strays) Michael Mau (A Blind Play of Social Forces, The Oval, Monarch), Emma Greene (The Harry Strange Radio Drama, Jeremiah Wilstone, Dead by Midnight) and Matt Chenoweth-Goodson (Willow of Ashes, Xenotech Rising, The Harry Strange Radio Drama Live) (full cast here); created by Tony Sarrecchia (The Harry Strange Radio Drama, the Lady Sherlock Mysteries, the Adventures of Scarlett Hood). Subscribers to our email list get new episodes before the rest of the world so subscribe today. It’s free!

Midnight Burger is a sci-fi audiodrama about a time-travelling, dimension-spanning diner than appears somewhere in the multiverse every day, complete with a sentient old-timey radio. The characters include a nihilist scientist, a chef with a past as a genius engineer, and a couple of old-timey Christian radio show hosts. This is one of my all-time favorite audiodramas. It is well-written, funny, and has some really good sci-fi. The characters are all very good, and the ongoing plot is great.
Mission Rejected is a comedy spy podcast about the backup spies who get the missions turned down by the superspy. This is my all-time favorite comedy podcast, it's style of humor consistently lands with me. It frequently has me laughing out loud. Each episode the main characters get a ridiculous spy mission they have to carry out, with the main plot progressing in the pre-intro and post-credit scenes.
Back Again, Back Again is a portal fantasy story, akin to Narnia, about a girl from who wakes up in the world of Rhysea on her 17th birthday. However, unlike most portal fantasy stories, Back Again, Back Again starts at the end of the stories, when Ilyaas dies in battle after 5 years in Rhysea and wakes up back home, 17 years old again. The podcast is Ilyaas telling the story of what happened to her in Rhysea. The show also has a heavy focus on fantasy linguistics and how language is used to control people.
Fall of the House of Sunshine is an absurdist musical comedy about a cult of dentists, living puppets, and the murder of a kids tv show host through a rip in space time. That’s the first season, at least. If you like musicals and completely absurd plots along with some surprisingly good worldbuilding and themes, this is the audiodrama for you. Some of the songs are really good, and the show keeps up its high quality through 3 seasons.
Unwell: A Midwest Gothic Mystery is pretty much what it says in the title, a spooky audiodrama set in the small town of Mt. Absalom, Ohio. This podcast is not horror, it has spooky elements but is more focused on characters and the overarching mystery than horror. Unwell is a bit slow at the beginning, but I was hooked by the end of the first season and binged the next three in a week.
Lost Terminal is a hopepunk post-apocalyptic sci-fi podcast about a lonely AI looking for friends. The show consists of Seth, a sentient AI that lives in a space station, narrating his reports sent back to a long-gone mission control. The show frequently introduces new characters, some of which have very compelling character arcs. Lost Terminal is hard sci-fi, something that I've found is very rare among audiodramas, which tend towards softer sci-fi. It also has a huge backlog of episodes, with over 15 seasons out.
StarTripper!! is a sci-fi audiodrama about a clerk who quits his job, sells all his limited edition movie merch, buys a spaceship, and sets off to start a travel podcast exploring the galaxy. The main characters start off as just him and his ship's sentient AI, but later on in the show more characters join the main cast. I'm not sure why, but this is one of the most chill podcasts that I have listened to, and I love listening to it as a way to relax.
Breaker Whiskey is an audiodrama which releases a short, 2-5 minute episode, every weekday. After an unknown apocalyptic event makes nearly everyone in the United States disappear in 1968, two women find themselves stranded in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. After 6 years, one of the women can't take it anymore and sets out to find other survivors, sending out transmissions every day with her CB radio. This show was created as a personal project by Laruen Shippen, who recorded it on an actual 1976 CB radio.
For more recommendations, check out my website https://grifff17.github.io/audiodrama-reviews/
Audiodrama podcast friends... I have a request. I want to listen to a new show, that has a lot of episodes to listen to, that a) is an INDIE show (ie, not Gimlet or Spotify etc) and b) is NOT an anthology. Also must have good voice acting!!!

Pirates AUs
Disinclined to Acquiesce by redskiesandsailboats [Rated G, 22111 Words, Complete, 2021]
“What can I give you that will make you help me find Neil?”
Kevin frowns, stands up. “You know he’s on the Black Pearl, right?”
Andrew did not know that. “I don’t care,” he says.
“You know,” Kevin says at Nicky’s questioning noise. “The Black Pearl. Black sails, appears only at night. Haunted and crewed by the damned.”
Andrew tries to convey exactly how many shits he gives about the bedtime stories of the Black Pearl through the look he gives Kevin: exactly zero.
(Or, the Pirates of the Caribbean AU that absolutely no one asked for, in which Kevin is morally grey but terribly colorful in every other aspect, Neil gets kidnapped far too many times, and Andrew just wants to live out his life in peace, making swords and kissing Neil.)
tw: violence, tw: blood, tw: gun violence
Let this be a lesson to all of us by talk_less_smilemore [Not Rated (we say T), 13439 Words, Complete, Aftg Big Bang 2020]
"If you cross me," Andrew warns, "If you destroy my city or give my Den up to the Butcher, if you even think ab—"
"You'll kill me, I know." Neil rolls his eyes. "I've heard that one before."
A pirate/assassin AU set in Havana, circa 1700s. Andrew just wants to do his job. Neil won't stop getting in the way. He's hiding more than it originally appears.
tw: gun violence, tw: murder, tw: blood, tw: child trafficking

tw: violence, tw: fire, tw: blood
Zen's Tumblr Prompts by zen_fox [Rated G/T/E, Collection, Updated 2018]
Chapter 6: KANDREW — pirate au [M, 539 Words]
The Foxhole is ship of a different class to the sleek Evermore: smaller, older, and patched up places Kevin didn't know could be patched before he ended up part of her crew. He can no longer remember his life on land, but even the sea sounds different here— closer, somehow, and wilder.
Band AUs
The Musical Stylings of Neil Josten by infernalstars [Rated G (we say T), 9375 Words, Complete, 2020]
Neil Josten is a singing prodigy.
Until his mother dragged him away from that life and his father‘s criminal behavior. When his mother died, he narrowly escaped his father's clutches.
In turn, he winds up at a high school in South Carolina for his senior year and manages to get detention on the first day. It’s here he meets the Monsters looking for a lead singer.
This is his chance to be real. And to be free.
tw: implied/referenced self harm, tw: implied/referenced abuse, tw: homophobia, tw: violence, tw: vomit, tw: nightmares
Risk It All by ChloeGreen1998 [Not Rated (we say T), 2998 Words, Complete, 2019]

i hate u (i love u) by insomniass (Not Rated (we say T), 2531 Words, Incomplete, Updated Oct 2019]
Nathaniel is an up and coming artist in the industry trying to find ways to escape from his mother's harmful tendencies. Andrew is trying to find his way after breaking off from his old band and estranging himself from his only family. They don't end up finding what they're looking for, but they do find each other, so maybe that's the same thing.
tw: homophobia, tw: implied/referenced abuse

30 Day Fanfic Challenge
Prompt #21 - Drive
One of Castiel’s favorite things about being a surrogate Winchester is when they let him drive.
It takes a while to get there, it takes even longer for him to learn how to do it. There’s mistrust and anger that they have to work through first and then there are arguments about the merits of using one’s seat belt (the correct answer is always, unless you’re in a firefight and you need the flexibility to shoot out the window) or the car horn (the answer is only if you’re ready to follow up that horn with a fist if you piss off the person you honked at).
Dean insists that he learn basic car maintenance as well before he allows the angel to drive his car. They spend afternoons outside of hotels and later the bunker with Castiel patiently holding a flashlight (“No not there, there.”) and watching while the hunter teaches him how to change a spark plug and diagnosis a weird clunking noise that started after they had run over a chupacabra in Texas. Dean explains the pros of stick shifts over automatic transmissions and Castiel commits it all to memory like he does with everything the other man tells him.
After he’s finished his tutelage and only after, does Dean allow Castiel behind the wheel of his baby. They practice first in large, abandoned lots and later on empty stretches of highway. Castiel hits curbs and forgets which gear to put the car in causing the gears to shriek and grind and Dean winces his way through it all with minimal grumbling. Sam watches with a smirk from outside the vehicle and only has to dodge out of the way a few times to avoid being hit.
Eventually, Castiel is allowed to drive, usually at night because the roads are emptier and the angel has preternatural night vision that keeps him from even coming close to hitting any wayward rabbits or possums who may have strayed into the road. During these midnight drive’s Sam usually stretches out in the backseat with a book, dozing off within minutes as his big body relaxes into the rhythm and hum of the car’s wheels on the pavement. Dean usually stays in the front passenger seat and takes the opportunity to scarf down a burger, sharing his fries graciously with Castiel since Sam isn’t awake to complain about it.
Sometimes they talk about nothing related to their many past dramas or even the current case. Mostly, they don’t. Mostly, they sit in the companionable silence that they’ve always been able to have with each other. Dean may raise an eyebrow if Castiel changes the station on the radio to the top 40s station, but he abides by his own rule that shotgun picks the music and they both don’t acknowledge that Dean can hum along to every Taylor Swift song that plays.
It's during these quiet twilight drives, that Castiel realizes he’s in love with the other man.
One of the rare times that Dean falls asleep is when it hits him. Maybe it's the moonlight bathing the hunter’s face in its soft glow or maybe it's just the quiet stillness that permeates his own thoughts when he is behind the wheel, but the angel thinks he’s maybe always been in love with the other man. Since that first moment when his grace pulled the fractured molecules of Dean Winchester back together in hell they’d shared a connection that others couldn’t help but notice.
He spends the rest of that drive wondering if the other man feels it too. And the next one as well, and the next, and the next. Until one night, when Sam is back at the bunker and the angel and Dean head out together to pick up dinner, Dean drives this time and Castiel sits resolutely across the Impala’s bench seat from the hunter.
Dean is tapping the steering wheel and singing along to some song about cherry pie that is playing on the radio until he moves his hand down to the gear shift and leaves it there after swiftly moving the car into 3rd gear as they reach the highway. The angel spends a long moment staring at that hand, running an infinite amount of scenarios and their outcomes through his mind in that span of time before deciding he likes his odds. He reaches out confidently and puts his hand on top of the other man’s where it rests on the gear shift like it's the inevitable conclusion of their years of dancing around each other.
Which maybe it is.
Dean jumps initially at the contact, looking over at the angel in surprise before looking down at their hands on the gear shift. “Cas, what--”
The angel just raises an expectant eyebrow as he waits for Dean to finish his thought, but the hunter must see something because he doesn’t continue. Castiel sees the other man swallow hard before suddenly all of the tension between them dissipates. The line of Dean’s shoulders relaxes and the muscles in his jaw unclench and he lets out a slow breath as he turns his attention back to the road.
“I think I want a steak from that place in Phillipsburg,” Dean mused, glancing at the angel with a mischievous curl to his lips. “Whaddya say, Cas?”
“Sounds good,” Castiel replied, settling back in his seat and turning towards the window. His own smile grew when he felt the hand under his turn over and strong fingers intertwine with his own.
This probably wasn’t the safest way to drive, but it certainly felt like the best.

天気予報 – ひまわり画像 (February 2019) [Asutenki – Sunflower Image]
Review by L. Fairon https://asutenki.bandcamp.com/album/--21 https://archive.org/details/sunflower-image
Known to specialist vaporwave circles, elusive Japanese producer Asutenki, active since 2017, belongs to the signalwave subgenre, also known as 'broken transmission', a genre where the artist, acting as an archivist of sorts, merely collects sound artifacts from the birth of the digital era and organizes the whole as an album to the benefit of those who can appreciate a bit of media archeology, sonic debris and primitive MIDI technology.
In addition to his role as a selector, the signalwave artist sometimes add Vow & Flutter effects to the source material to increase the vintage feeling, sometimes loop entire sections to enhance the alienating effect, and sometimes add drone music of his own making as a counterpoint. Present since around 2015, broken transmission is produced mainly in the US and Japan, though I'm more interested in the latter country's productions and, as an introduction to newcomers, I would recommend another Japanese artist named 空気系 and his short Scenery album of 2019.
What we have here, though, is a less approachable, rather monstrous project titled ひまわり画像 or Himawari Gazou, meaning Sunflower Image, by artist 天気予報 or Asutenki, meaning Weather Forecast, and self released in 2019. At 6 hours and 26 mns, this is a huge collection of 360 TV ads and TV station IDs, broadcast idents, radio jingles, infomercials and other Japanese media detritus from the 1990s.
Far from being a mere random selection of trendy commercials, though, Sunflower Image is well thought-out and structured. According to the meagre info on Bandcamp, the album is broken into 3 sections and thus is –almost– structured like an Indian raga: tracks #1–120 = Broadcast Starts / Morning ; tr. #121–240 = Afternoon / Sunset ; tr. #241–360 = Evening / Midnight. Just like the sunflower follows the sun during the day, the entire Sunflower Image album seems to register the passing of time on Japanese media during 24 hours, again like a classical Indian raga, as indicated by many tracks simply bearing the hour of the day as their title. Additionally, the album is structured with recurring tracks every 5 or 10 songs and all titled CMブレーク Vol. XXX, though I don't understand the concept – full commercial breaks, perhaps? Near the end of the album (ca tr. #348), after almost 6 hours of commercial crap, some of the inane jingles are progressively replaced by loops and drone sounds crafted by Asutenki himself and the album ends with a haunting, 10mn-long lo-fi, droning sound titled Into The Abyss.
As per the vaporwave ethos, Sunflower Image should be enjoyed as both a nostalgic glimpse of a bygone era and a celebration of the naivety of sound design at the time. Exemplifying the signature sound from the Japanese 1990s, the sound is purposefully lo-fi and wobbly, as if lifted from antique video tapes. The synthetic MIDI style and sound flavour reminded me of Yasuaki Shimizu's Music for Commercials (1987). Being such a long album, Sunflower Image constantly juxtaposes the ugliest and the catchiest, yet some tracks do stand out for me as charming or even beautiful, like track #93 Visibility Surroundings ; #118 Transition Commence ; #203 Urgent & Transparent ; #287 A ; or #354 Coming To A Close. Ultimately, each listener shall find a way to navigate such a rather unmanageable album – I tend to listen to 50-60 tracks in one sitting before getting bored. Granted, this might be a puzzling album, yet one can only marvel at such a unique project and the clever way Asutenki constructed it. [review by L.F., July 2020]

Regular reggae disco in North-East London playing dub, dancehall, roots, rockers, ska, rocksteady and other bass transmissions on two turntables and a space echo. The night is named after sadly departed MC Earl Anthony Robinson, the voice behind classic deejay tunes such as "Drunken Master". Our December guest selector is none other than D'Oxman! An institution in the London reggae revive scene, whether behind the counter at Dub Vendor, on the mic at the legendary 100% Dynamite parties or presenting on Soho Radio. Oxman has a long and deep history, from running his own sound, producing, record collecting, to hosting dances. Whether selecting or MCing, he is one of the best in the game. Expect the finest in ska, rocksteady, roots, dub and more. In addition to this being our seasonal shindig, it also marks 4 years of General Echo nights at the Vic! Come by to celebrate our birthday, listen to some great tunes, and have a drink in Walthamstow's loveliest pub. The Victoria is a short walk from Walthamstow Central station with an affordable bar, though please note it's only accessible via a flight of stairs. £5 on the door, 8pm til thee midnight hour. Musical niceness guaranteed.
