do you happen to have any recs for decent biology/chem/any other science books that you liked? thank you!
the only ones ive read recently are
isaac's storm - about the 1900 galveston storm
into the raging sea - about the sinking of el faro. not a ton of science but i really enjoyed it.
the authentic animal - about taxidermy.
i read "stiff" in high school for my anatomy class and i really liked it! about various things that happen to bodies (funeral homes, body farms)
the above arent super ology focused, but they are nonfiction and i did really like them all and there is discussion of storm patterns / biology / etc.
books on my shelf i havent gotten to yet that might fit the bill:
the scientist as rebel - freeman dyson
body bazaar - lori andrews dorothy nelkin.
the audubon ark - frank graham jr
the feather theif - kirk wallace johnson
the dinosaur artist - paige williams
the great apes - chris herzfeld
the beak of the finch - jonathan weiner
metazoa - peter godfrey smith
entangled life - merlin sheldrake
the soul of an octopus - sy montgomery
the universe below - william j broad
the wave - susan casey
thunderstruck - erik larson
the perfect storm - sebastian junger
first steps - jeremy desilva
#ask#anonymous#my strategy is to walk to the hpb biology section wander around till i find a cool cover

SEBASTIAN & ERIK.
STARTER CALL / @magntokinesis
He’s different, even from them—the wanderers, the outcasts, the people he thought he might finally fit in amongst. He had felt that way about the army once, a band of brothers, but watching those men—those boys—who should have been, who were, like a family to him, suffer and die one after the other at the hands of the scientists had showed him, he had no one. Even the family he had been born into didn’t want him now. Had they ever?
The community at Genosha, they were born with their powers. Sebastian was made into this unstable thing by men. He is a danger. He feels them watching him out of the corners of their eyes all the time, suspicious, waiting for him to snap.
Instead, before he can, he is packing. But someone’s coming to stop him—he knows it before the door opens and the floorboards creak under their new weight. A tiger’s sense of hearing is acute, and he recognises the footfalls, the breathing pattern, of Magneto from halfway across the lawn.
“Don’t.” Bash doesn’t turn around. He tosses the last of his clothes into his rucksack and pulls the strings tight, shouldering it the next second. “Please, don’t say anything, just- let me go.” He’d find his home somewhere else, someday.

Erik is from Minnesota, so I've been watching YouTube videos of Minnesota accents so I could get familiar with the speech patterns. They were all super cute, so I had to draw Erik doing a bunch of the "Minnesota-isms" (if this was a cartoon, his accent would be stupidly strong)

Star Wars Day- A Memorial
Happy National Star Wars Day, everyone!
Last year, I commemorated this day by beginning a 14 week-long project, in which I reviewed all existing Star Wars movies. Of course, since Episode 9- Rise of Skywalker won’t be out until December, it will be a while longer before I can review that one.
So this year, I decided to take a moment to look back and remember all the Star Wars cast and crew we have lost throughout the years. Because without their time and talent, the timeless saga might never have become the phenomenon it has become.
Leigh Brackett- Writer of the First Draft of Episode 5- The Empire Strikes Back (1915-1978)

21 & 22. Professional Rivals AU + Futuristic AU (Part 2) - Cherik
Part 1 is here!
In the fifteen years since Charles and Raven left Earth IV to roam the galaxy, there have only been a handful of times when he’s been truly afraid that they might not make it out alive. The first had been their kidnapping at the hands of Tarkussian slave traders, when Charles has been a mere fifteen year old miscreant and Raven scarcely twelve, and they’d stolen away on the wrong freighter to get off-world. The time Raven had been bitten by a Morgoss serpent, when they went salvaging off the coast of the Froni sea. And of course the Arathor 7 ‘incident’ with Erik and Sebastian Shaw, where Charles lost his legs and had to have them replaced with cybernetic ones after spending two bloody months in a coma.
This particular mission is turning out to be just as bad for his health and his sanity, only this time, Charles is very much on his own.
‘Charles, where are you? We’ve got to get back to the ship right now!’
“I’m trying,” he hollers, ducking just as a plasma shot burns a hole right beside his head, the volley of gunfire deafening both here and on Raven’s side over the comms. “I’m pinned down here on Deck 4! Don’t wait for me; just get the others back to the ship now!”
‘Goddammit Charles I’m not leaving without you!’ Raven yells back, and he can hear shouts of agreement from Alex and Darwin through the comms, along with a string of exceptionally creative curses from a highly agitated Sean. ‘Stay there! We’ll come and get you!’
“You can’t.” He’s about two minutes away from running out of ammo, and waves of very pissed off Skoll keep slowly advancing towards him down the dimly lit hall. “There’s hundreds of them between you and me, Raven. Go. Save yourselves.”
Another shot, this time pinging off his deflector shield right above his heart. A few more direct hits and the generator will get shorted, and then the plasma will burn right through his damned armor plating…
If he gets hit it had better be a clean fucking shot; he’d rather die than risk having another limb blown off.
‘Fuck that,’ Raven snarls, ‘you don’t get to die unless I’m the one killing you, do you hear me, Charles? You stay alive until I find--”
“I love you,” he says, before cutting their comms, and rolling into an alcove so he can get out of sight temporarily and take a few deep breaths. He yanks the portable explosive Hank packed for him in this gear, arming the detonator to voice command so he can set it off as soon as Raven and the others get clear.
Even if they don’t make it back to the ship by the time Charles runs out of ammo, the resulting explosion should tear a large enough hole in the space station to distract the Skolls on their tail.
Let’s keep that option to the very last, shall we Mr. Xavier? I vote we try getting out of this mess the old fashioned way.
An explosion goes off behind him in the hall, distracting him from answering the telepathic message, or even wondering who can be talking to him from a distance with all the psi dampening tech built into the damn station walls. A wave of gunfire erupts from a previously sealed door, and suddenly Charles finds himself flanked by three other bodies, armored in the Brotherhood’s signature red and black.
Of course it would be just like Erik to show up out of the blue, and make Charles’ bad fucking day even worse.
“Fuck me,” Charles mutters, just as fresh wave of Skoll sentinels arrive and start shooting, pushing them all back towards the room where his would-be rescuers appeared. Even with help they can’t keep this up for very long, before the Skoll’s sheer numbers overwhelm them where they stand.
“Arm. Detonate at 50%. 5 seconds,” he shouts, as he pushes his plan none too gently into Erik’s head. Then he tosses the device right behind the Skoll’s portable shield generator, as Erik tears great hunks of the metal off the walls to seal them in from the blast.
The resulting explosion brings down a huge chunk of Deck 5 into the hall, enough to block - temporarily at least - any Skolls who didn’t get caught immediately in the blast.
And Charles finds himself still breathing and in one piece, well protected behind a massive barricade with his former lover and now rival, Erik fucking Lehnsherr.
He knows he’s going to deny it to his dying day, but it’s most definitely relief, but also feelings that makes him grab Erik’s face and pull him into a passionate, open mouthed kiss.
It’s also feelings that make him haul off and punch that same smug face, knocking him right off his feet and on the ground with a grunt.
Wincing, Erik merely rubs at his jaw and gives him a sheepish grin. “It’s good to see you too, Charles.”
“Don’t try and sweet talk me, Erik. What the fuck are you doing here?”
“He’s here to save you,” a voice answers, the same voice Charles heard in his head only moments ago it seems. “You were set up by my father, and by Sebastian Shaw.”
“Your father?” he asks, just as the helmet comes off, revealing long cascading blonde hair and a very familiar face. It’s Emma Frost, daughter of crime lord Winston Frost and the very one they’re supposed to be looking for, though its abundantly clear now that she requires no saving. “Fucking-- And Shaw! Again! How? Oh, god I’m never going to hear the end of this from Raven.”
Dragging himself back up and onto his feet, Erik shoulders his rifle and lets out a tired sigh. Charles does not think about kissing him again, or how handsome he looks with a new beard and slightly longer hair. “It’s a long story. Let’s get the hell out of here, and we’ll tell you everything we know.”
“I can teleport us to the Genosha,” the third Brotherhood crew member - who turns out to be Azazel - says. “It’s closer to our location than the Blackbird. You can call Raven and then we can reconvene with your team somewhere safe.”
“I know you have no reason to trust me after what happened, Charles,” Erik says, “just...let me help you. For old times?”
It’s a bad idea, he knows, spending any amount of time around Erik Lehnsherr, not only for his health but also for his still broken heart. So he’ll just accept the help off the station and get whatever information he can about Shaw, and then walk away and not let himself get sucked back in to Erik’s bullshit... Again...
"Fine,” Charles says, ignoring Erik’s relieved smile. “Let’s get out of this hell hole before my sister burns this whole place down.”

Hey! I am somewhat new to 2ct and am in the midst of an obsession with Ciel - surprise, surprise - and was wondering if you could fill me in on a few things? Obviously if you can't then don't worry! 1. Is there any hints to what the earls real name is? 2. Which twin did madam red prefer? 3. Did the earl get on with Ciel? 4. What was the earl's relationship with his mother like (what he called her, their dynamic, how much time was spent together, etc.), and did Vincent actively ignore the earl?
Well, I can give you the canon facts (as best I can recall) and then give you my interpretation of it all.
1. If we assume Ciel is the name of the older twin (not the younger), and most versions of 2ct now do this (I think), then the earl must have a different given name, right? There really isn’t any specific canon evidence suggesting any one name over another. However, there are some forerunners that look promising. I’ll list my **faves** here:
I. Elic. It’s a rare name and a perfect anagram of Ciel. I’ve found two meanings for it: 1) variation on Alec/Alex, meaning “protection, defense/defender” and 2) “from the elder tree”. I like this name for a few reasons. My pet theory is how Mother3 (a game) is the basic framework of the manga series. The twins in that game are Claus and Lucas; these are anagrams, and even their parents discuss how they named the older twin first and made an anagram to name the younger. Mother3 has a character named Alec (their maternal grandfather), and Black Butler has Alexis (an uncle) – their personalities and plot roles are very similar.
II. Luce. (Sounds like loose.) It’s a *near* anagram; just replace the “i” with a “u”, and it means “light, star”. In Mother3 you have Claus (“people’s victory”) and Lucas (also “light, star”), so if Yana-san doesn’t use a perfect anagram, she could have a four-letter “C” name (Ciel) and a four-letter “L” name, like Luce. Luka would be nice, but that’s already the name of the younger brother to Alois/Jim in season two of the anime. Since the non-canon materials (anime, etc.) are like AU spoilers, a name similar to Luka is entirely possible, like Luce or Luke. There is also more reason to use names that are similar to Mother3 characters; I mean… Mother3 does have Claus, and the Black Butler character who hands the earl the game “Mouse3” is named Chlaus (Klaus in some translations).
III. Eric. Again a near-anagram; it just replaces the “L” with an “R”, and the Japanese often change “L” into “R” for pronunciation. Means “to rule forever”. Sounds good for someone who wears a ring with a motto roughly meaning “the power to rule”, doesn’t it? Problem is, this name has already been used in Kuromyu2. Eric and Alan were essentially accepted into canon in a single panel of the manga. However, the manga never mentions their names. Could get a variation, like Erik. Same meaning.
IV. Lune. Meaning “moon”, I’ve recently added this to my list. Only a half-anagram, but the earl has been referred to as the moon by Sebastian and Baron Kelvin. Soma is the name of the Hindu moon god. London means “fortress of the moon”…. I felt that I had to add it to my list for these reasons.
Those are my personal top four name ideas. Other popular names floating around are longer versions of Luce, like Lucien… or other names for “star, light”, like Aster. Still others have considered names for “sun”, “earth”, or “moon”.
2. I don’t know that Madam Red had a favorite, but she probably spent more time with the earl, since he was often ill, and she would treat his asthma attacks.
3. I can’t say they always agreed with each other, but they clung to each other in that cage, and real Ciel wanted to protect his younger twin. It’s also hinted at that they spent a lot of time playing games of chess against each other, since the earl was often kept inside (due to his health).
4. Since Rachel and the earl shared the same health issues (and because he’s the younger of the twins), the earl probably gravitated towards his mother… and vice versa. I don’t know about any nicknames between the two, but they probably spent a lot of time together and might have created some for each other. In Mother3, Hinawa also seems to favor her younger son, Lucas. In the biblical story of Esau and Jacob, their mother prefers Jacob, the younger twin; she even helps him trick his father.
5. Similarly, there is only circumstantial evidence to suggest that Vincent favors Ciel, like calling and referring to him by name but only calling the earl "this one" or "my son". In Mother3, Flint obviously favors the older twin, Claus. In that story of Esau and Jacob, the father clearly wants his older twin son to inherit and rule. Esau gives up/sells his birthright to Jacob but later tries to reclaim it. However, Jacob proves to be the better leader.
Thanks for the ask!

Tagged by @valkyriemusic **Rules: you can tell a lot about a person by the music they listen to. Put your music on shuffle and list the first ten songs, then tag 10 people** uhmmm so. I don’t have an Ipod so I just took all the music I have in my 2TB hard drive and put random on VLC media player. So, here’s what my first 10 random songs of over 500 GB of music looks like: 01.Frédéric Chopin - Waltz No.13 Op.70 No.3 in D flat major (By Rubinstein of course) 02.Frédéric Chopin - Polonaise No.15 Op.Posth in B Flat Minor (By Ashkenazy) 03.Erik Satie - Les Trois Valses distinguees du precieux degoute - Sa taille - Son binocle - Ses jambes (by Bojan Gorisek) 04.Johann Sebastian Bach - Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme - IV. Chorał Zion hört die Wächter singen, BWW 140 (by the Royal Philarmonic Orchestra, Jonathan Carney, conductor. Susan Bullock, soprano) (Here I noticed that VLC can’t contain all that music so I left Bach, Chopin and Satie out) 05.Julián Aguirre - Aires populares Argentinos - Nº3 (1897) (By Lia Cimaglia Espinosa) 06.Luis Caruso & Alberto Mastra - La fulana (1955) (by Alberto Mastra) 07.Estela Magnone & Jaime Roos - Los bailarines (by Estela Magnone in voice and keyboards, and Jaime Roos in the rest of the instruments and arranges) 08.My serenade by Django and Grapelli. 09.Alberto Caracciolo - Tema de tango en re menor (Alberto Caracciolo (Direction, Arrange and Bandoneon), Antonio Agri (Violin), Roberto Cicare (Piano), Rufino Arriola (Double-Bass) & Juan Carlos Moyano (Percussion). 10.Eduardo Arolas - Retintín (by Florindo Sassone’s Orquesta Típica). not really “shuffle” but I think I did good. I don’t really have that many people to tag. So let’s just go with @pianistical @speedynoise @madopiano, @soyoumusik (Choose a random moderator I suppose?) and @melodramaticsoprano since you guys are the ones I see most in my dash. Also! If any of you don’t feel comfortable with this, there’s no need to do it.

@thechibrarian If I can make a few WWII/Resistance recommendations, I went through my collection of over 3k books on the subject and whittled it down to these! Most of them are about resistance fighters and Jews who fought back, as well as those who helped Jews escape the concentration camps and others who were passionate about fighting fascists. In the Garden of Beasts is especially poignant as it details how the Nazi’s swept into power and how William Dodd, the US Ambassador, saw what was happening but the US State Dept was indifferent.
“As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition. Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.“

No one likes to arrive too early at a party. There’s no one to talk to and nowhere to hide. You can’t leave without being conspicuously rude. In due course you find yourself talking about car insurance (or worse still, Brexit) with other new arrivals. Of course, there’s the decor to look at (paintings you don’t much like) and there’s the buffet, tempting but as yet untouchable.
As hosts, though, we’re always grateful to those who arrive early and get things going.
New social networks have a hard time too. What’s the point of joining if no one’s there?
In gigglemusic, our new social network for classical musicians, we try to solve that problem by offering new users content that doesn’t depend on the community being large. We’ve uploaded the schedules of major classical music venues around the world (for the moment mainly opera houses).
We’ve also entered the ‘diaries’ of the world’s greatest composers – well, the greatest composers writing within the Western tradition or having some significant influence on it. By their diaries I mean their dates and places of birth and death (though many are still alive and kicking) and the dates and places of the first performances of their major works. Almost all of this comes from Wikipedia.
It may be a bit like trainspotting, but I, for one, find it mildly interesting to know where this or that masterpiece was first performed, and when.
To review a composer’s diary, start with People, open a profile, tap Diary and then scroll up to go back in time. Tap on an individual work to find out more. There’s usually a Wikipedia article to link to.
But who are the world’s greatest composers?
There’s no ideology behind the selection I’ve made, and no conscious exclusions (I’ve even included Carl Orff). They’re just the first 292 composers who came to mind, and for whom there was also a Wikipedia entry. I’m sure the assiduous researcher will detect unconscious bias, but if you do, please tell me who I’ve missed. There’s room for nearly everyone in gigglemusic.
