Look who shows up in the strangest places!

Whilst finally catching up on "Superman Smashes the Klan" (Which I've bought, just had in the stack to read) I was delighted to see a certain someone show up as a blink-and-you-miss-it came in Issue 3, when a young Clark takes Lana Lang to a circus visiting Smallville!

The costumes are unmistakable!

Look at how happy Dick is here, performing with his parents as The Flying Graysons! Pure showmanship!

It even works timeline wise,  Since this is 1938, when Superman first appeared. it makes sense that Dick would still be with the circus as of this point in time.

Whilst it would have have been fun to see Dick interact with Clark, given how close they'd become in later years I’m rather glad they didn’t.

Oh, and go buy this series, it is BRILLANT!

reverse unpopular opinion for: dick and damian and kotfe

Dick: I really love a lot of things about Dick

First of all how competent and generally confident he is. I feel like we see a lot of this in the New Teen Titans, since it’s building up from his insecurity and like when the aliens with blackfire invade earth he is like “You will leave or you’re entire fleet will get destroyed” and it doesn’t come off as like random bragging/threatening it’s just like what he genuinely believes (like that the alien invaders are no match for the heroes on earth). or when the US government is trying to arrest the titans for some reason (I think it wound up looking like they committed murder decision during a brother blood plotline) he’s like “i’m not worried about us, I’m worried about you”. Or in the Grayson comic series when he’s trying to talk down the guy with gun-eyes and he’s completely confident giving the guy a chance to make the right decision.

I also love him when he’s on big brother mode. Both his interactions with Tim (They are kind of playful) when he’s training Rose (he’s not really her brother and they don’t consider themselves family, but she was clearly looking for family by trying to say he could be Ravager and she could be Jericho or something) or especially when he’s with Damian. He just has such a big heart and is so good at making people feel comfortable and I cry ;_;

Damian: I Could make like an entire essay about why I love Damian. I love how gradual and convincing his character arc is; I love that it’s not like there was just an on/off switch and we can see him genuinely grappling with how he was raised for a long time. He is a superhero and not killing people for a while, and it takes him until robin: son of batman to articulate why killing someone is wrong, even though he hasn’t done it in a bit by that point.

I love his big heart and how genuinely he cares about people. Like we see extremely over the top gifts he gives to people, Bruce gets a treasure hunt through the world showing him important memory stuff about his parents (which must have taken MONTHS of investigation to pull off), in another gift for bruce he was coming through the sewers just to find one of his mom’s pearls to give it to him. So he clearly cares a ton but doesn’t say it in words he does it with gift giving. Or when he just jumps in people’s arms for a hug like he does with Dick when he finds out Dick is alive again. My hearts.

Kotfe: I really love a lot of the characters in Kotfe. I love Vaylin (she is very relatable).  I love Koth and how morally strong he is and how he does not put up with any bullshit the PC will try to throw at him. I also love how we clearly see how different Zakuul was (or should have been written) through him with his POV on valkorion and Arcan -- even though valkorion was the planet-eater, he doesn’t really have a reason to believe that because it’s lana telling him this (and he’s never witnessed the empire drama and only seen what valk did for zakuul) and in his perspective it makes sense that arcan represents the danger because *that’s* when the change happened -- that’s when it stopped being from “yay valk helps zakuul” to the invasion of the rest of the galaxy and the change between him being a soldier during presumed time of relative peace to active war (and being given the order to fire on civilians, which made him desert).

Crisis On Infinite Earths #5

Warning, Spoilers Ahead…

 Psycho-Pirate’s master is very upset – he’s destroyed the two prime universes, murdered the Monitor, and he still isn’t able to level up!

The Monitor - via pre-recorded message – reveals the he used his death energies to create a netherverse that absorbed the Earth-1 and Earth-2 universes.  However, the two universes are merging and will cause the other’s destruction.

Alex Luthor (son of Earth-3 Lex Luthor and Lois Lane) reveals the Monitor left him with instructions to save the two universes.  The rapidly aging Alex is now a teenager.

The Flash and Red Tornado are prisoners of the mysterious master.  Psycho-Pirate abuses poor Barry out of sheer boredom.

Lana Lang for WGBS-TV reports on the current insanity of the newly-created planet. In one city, you have dinosaurs, Neanderthals, Viking ships, blimps, horse-drawn carriages, and buildings from the 30th century.  

Sinestro himself has a “What the hell?” look on his face – and he’s seen some stuff!

Alex Luthor and Harbinger have gathered an assembly of heroes and villains.  Big two page spread of the assembly.  We have the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Outsiders, Infinity Inc., the Metal Men, Cave Carson & his team, the Teen Titans, the Sea Devils, the survivors of Easy Company, Dr. Light II, Swamp Thing, All-Star Squadron, Ragman, Riddler, Captain Boomerang, Kamandi, Rag Doll, Star Sapphire, the Persuader, Elongated Man, Steel, Hawkman, Hawkwoman, Captain Comet, B’Wana Beast, Bir Sir, Solomon Grundy, the Mist, Aqualad, Tula, Lori Lemaris, the Blackhawks, Phantom Stranger, the Cheetah, Robotman, Per Degaton, Dr. Polaris, the Creeper, Cinnamon,  Monsieur Mallah, Phobia, the Legion of Substitute Heroes, Batgirl, Batman, Earth-2 Robin, Earth-2 Superman, Earth-2 Huntress, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Martian Manhunter, Celsius, Arion, Scalphunter, Green Arrow, Killer Frost, Firestorm, Deathstroke, and Plastic Man.

The main thing I love about George Perez’s artwork – the man is not afraid to draw a large group of characters.   The groups are never standing in straight formation either.  The characters are reacting and interacting.  A few examples:

1)      Easy Company is clearly freaked out by Swamp Thing.

2)      Beast Boy (Changeling) re-uniting with the missing Cyborg.

3)      Aqualad and Tula assisting Lori Lemaris.  Lori can’t stand because she’s a mermaid.

4)      Solomon Grundy is very annoyed.

5)      Couples are standing next to each other: Nightwing/Starfire, Brainiac 5/Supergirl, Lightning Lad/Saturn Girl, Bouncing Boy/Duo Damsel, etc.

6)      Elongated Man, Plastic Man, and the Metal Men are using their stretching abilities to great effect.

Lois Lane – also from WGBS-TV – interviews people on the street:  Tomahawk and Grixx of Ceti Alpha 6.   Poor Tomahawk doesn’t even know he what a television is – only moments ago he was fighting with George Washington’s troops.

Back to the assembled heroes.  Adding to the roll call:  Sargon the Sorcerer, Firehawk (the Western character), Black Orchid, Gizmo, Deadman, Gypsy, Penguin, Brother Blood, Validus, Jemm (Son of Saturn), Amethyst, the Warlord (Travis Morgan), Catwoman, the Atom (Ray Palmer), Jonah Hex, Vibe, Captain Cold, Earth-2 Wonder Woman, Ocean Master, Dolphin, and Black Canary.

We take a quick peek at Rann where Adam Strange battles monsters from the pre-historic era.

Superman steps up with the big hero speech: “Maybe I’m wrong talking for everyone but I will. Send us back. Let the doubters decide. But I promise you this, if we can save the worlds that remain, we will!”

The series has consistently shown Superman as the standard bearer of the DC Universe – the one you turn to when the end of the world is here. It has also demonstrated the struggles Clark has with the role: he has fears and vulnerabilities but has to ignore it and order to be the “shining light” for the other heroes.

A team of Green Lanterns, including Arisia and Katma Tui, arrive on Oa.  They discover the Guardians in stasis but are quickly taken out themselves.  

Lois Lane is attacked by a sabretooth tiger but is quickly saved by Earth-1 and Earth-2 Superman.  

Rip Hunters and his Time Masters are adrift in time.

Alfred and Jason Todd call for aid as Anthro, Embra, and a host of Neanderthals are invading Wayne Manor! Batman responds and he brings back-up. The back-up consists of Earth-2 Robin, Earth-2 Huntress (logical as they know the secret identity and are part of the family, Katana & Halo of the Outsiders (Batman’s team, also in on the identity), Nuklon (he’s trustworthy), Per Degaton, Kung, the Brain and Monsieur Mallah, Poison Ivy, Plastique, and Weather Wizard.  What?! Bruce is obviously not concerned about maintaining his secret identity at this point.

We have a brief panel of Batman putting his arm around Jason Todd’s shoulders. Jason is in civilian attire, not in his costumed identity. Earth-2 Robin (an adult Dick Grayson) is clearly looking at the duo with an unhappy “Who are you” expression. Again, George Perez – master of small details.

Unfortunately, my adorkable Anthro has no dialogue. The world is missing out on what would have been an awesome Alfred-Anthro interaction.

Starfire, Sun Boy, Firebrand, Firestorm, Polar Boy, and Killer Frost head to the Soviet Union to assist Red Star.  Killer Frost has reverted back to her lovable “I will kill you all” self.

Red Star refuses the aid until Starfire reminds him: “It’s our world. Please, we have to work together if we’re to save any of us.”

Red Star concedes: “Your words should be heeded by all. I apologize. You are right. Perhaps if we all survive, the politicians will remember this cooperation and build a better world for us all.”

Good luck with that!

Psycho-Pirate is still picking on my poor sweet Barry.  Meanwhile, the master is transforming the Red Tornado from machine into a primal force.

The Legion, The Justice Society, Zatana, and Sargon are attempting to combat the out of control weather only to discover that it’s being caused by the Red Tornado. Wildcat’s spine is shattered by a lightning bolt – he will never walk again.  We also get a quick two panel glimpse of Yolanda Montez.  Yolanda will become the second Wildcat.

The heroes and villains unite to save the universe.  Alex Luthor informs the group there are five universes that need to be saved.  

The master reveals himself to Psycho-Pirate and Flash:  Call me…the Monitor!”   A very corpse-like Monitor.

We end on Earth-X: “An earth where World War Two had continued for more than forty years.” AKA the home of the Freedom Fighters (Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady, The Ray, the Human Bomb, and Black Condor).  

So…Five Universes to save…

We have:

1)Earth One

2)Earth Two

3) Earth X

4) Earth F – Marvel Family

5) Earth C – Charlton characters – Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, Question, Nightshade

Earth One and Earth Two are DC’s golden and silver age characters. The remaining three earths feature characters from various comic book publishers DC bought out over the years: Charlton, Fawcett, Quality, etc.

Who's Mon El? And how would his dynamic with Dick be interesting? Personally I'm with you on adding more Supers. There are a lot of interesting Super members and yet Bat and Arrow (along with Aqua and Wonder's getting more attention) families are the only ones getting attention in various medias, comic or tv. If you didn't know any better, you'd think Clark, Kara, Conner and Jon were the only ones around worth any salt. For instance what about Chris, Karen, Lara Lane, Streaky? Lots of -

2 interesting supers I don’t even know much about but are out there for the picking. Clark is such a family man, why let it be so small. Back to Dick, he might as well be a honorary member of the Super family since his mantle’s kryptonian and Clark’s the other half of his inspiration. Plus he might not have a Super half like the other bat members, but he’s close to several Super. Dick is one of Clark’s best friends. Kara had a huge crush on him and later regards him as a big brother she turns-

3 to for support and guidance. Comic Conner idolized Dick and TV!YJ Conner is one of his best friends. He’s also one of Power Girl’s friends too. Basically Dick should be considered a honorary Super in my opinion and it’s sad that gets ignored these days in comics considering his long history of interactions w/several of them. Okay this ask became about several different topics w/o meaning to. Basically, Mon El, more Supers, Dick’s friendships with all of them.

Mon El is also known as Lar Gand, and is a alien from a sister planet to Krypton. In the past as a young boy he landed on Krypton, just prior to the place blowing up and met Jor El and Lara El, Clark’s biological parents. Jor El fixed his ship and helped him escape from the explosion, with a note saying that if he ends up on earth he should look for their son Kal El and help him. Fast forward, Lar ended up years later on Earth as a young man, and Clark found him. The two became friends and he took the name of Mon El in honor of Jor and Lara who saved his life. He later took over the spot that Super Boy had in the Legion of Super Heroes due to time travel and has since been a staple there. For a while he was acting as Superman for Metropolis when Chris, Conner and Clark were all missing. He both dug the role but also felt he wasn’t ready for the responsibilities. He’s really cool and looks like this: 

He goes by the name Valor. 

As for why the dynamic would be interesting. Lar, like Dick, has a very upbeat personality. He’s very clever and always one who willingly steps into helping others. Although he suffers sometimes from memory loss, Lar or Mon El is typically an upbeat person who would probably easily become a friend to Dick and is seen as a younger brother to Superman. His dynamic with Dick would probably be along the lines of two high school buddies hanging out, although Lar is far more serious at times than Dick and also someone who can be a bit naive in nature. He’s honest and loyal, and is willing to stand up for what’s right even if others don’t see it that way. I would say he’s sort of a Steve Rogers type in personality, but also throw in some of Bart Allen’s goofiness. 

Dick is totally regarded as an honorary super, as is oddly Tim in some cases and Cassie Sandmark, and Stephanie Brown. 

I’d love to see more of Karen Starr around, along with Lana. Both are strong women, but tend to be shunted to the wayside for some reason. Power Girl owns her own company, and while yes she is Clark’s cousin Kara grown up (complicated that lot) from Earth 2, she still sees Clark as a younger brother. 

The way I see the Super family is thus:

Clark and Bobby Cobb kent (Lar Gand’s earth name is Bobby Cobb) -Brothers

Karen Star (Kara Zor el, Power Girl) -Cousin but like an older sister to Clark

Kara Kent  -Younger sister or younger cousin

Conner Kent -Younger brother

Jon and Chris Kent -brothers and sons to Clark

Cir El (not sure what her name would be as her evil counterpart was named Mia) -daughter of Lois and Clark and sister of Jon and Chris

Lana Lane (possibly Irons) -Best friend of Clark and fiancee to John H. Irons

Dr. John Henry Irons (Steel) -Close family friend of the Kents

Pete (not sure his last name) -Best friend of Clark Kent

Jimmy Olsen -Friend to Clark as well as sometimes helper

Natasha Irons -Bestie number one to Kara Kent

Stephanie Brown -Bestie number two and honorary  Super family member

Dick Grayson -Friend of Clark’s, honorary Super member

Damian Wayne -Bestie of Jon and Chris Kent -semi honorary Super member

Tim Drake -Bestie of Conner Kent, honorary member of the Super family

Krypto, Streaky, Comet - all members of the Super family with the add on that they are pets. Comet being a horse and belonging to Karen Starr. 

Jor El -Grandfather of Jon, Chris and Cir, not exactly a good guy. 

John Lane Kent -Alt version of Jon who existed from another earth, usually called a distant cousin. 

Clark Kent I -Earth two’s Clark Kent, considered Elder cousin to New Earth Clark. 

Billy, Mary and Freddie -Captain Marvel Family can be seen as honorary Super members. 

I think that’s all there is. But yeah we don’t see enough of these people in other media.

Hullo Rebekka! I love your blog, I just found it and it is just lovely! I was curious, and feel free to be as wordy or not in your response because I love Trek gushes/rants/vents. How do you feel about the reboot films in comparison to the original ones in terms of....1) Characterization with the same characters 2) Casting 3)How well they keep with the spirit/goals that Gene had for the original? as well as any other things of note between the two? Thank you for your time

Hi, thank you for your question and sorry that it took me a little while to get to! I am at heart a TOS gay, but AOS is what introduced me to Star Trek in the first place, so if nothing else, it has the power of nostalgia on its side.

I don’t hate J.J. Abrams as much as everyone else. He’s a good filmmaker, albeit not a very interesting one. And I may be in a minority of one here, but I actually really like the lens flares. Abrams has explained them by saying,”I love the idea that the future that they were in was so bright that it couldn't be contained.” He’s gone on entire rants about why he loves lens flares. When I look at that quote and read those rants, I can almost convince myself that he actually had a vision for his Trek movies, that he actually wanted to bring something distinctive and unique to them. And I think that he maybe did, but that his vision was entirely superficial and didn’t extend to plot and characters.

I’ve really grown to love AOS Jim. It took me a while because the first two movies turn him into exactly what TOS Jim isn’t: a womanizing jerk. Abrams and his writing team (Orci, Lindelof, and Kurtzman) relied on the widespread cultural misunderstanding of the character instead of how he was actually written in TOS. At the same time, I like the idea of a Jim Kirk who is a little rougher around the edges. I like his James Dean probably-listens-to-too-much-Lana-Del-Rey vibes. But the movies never explore why he’s a little bit rougher around the edges, at least not in any meaningful or interesting way; it’s really not enough to say that he grew up without a dad and consequently is a jerk.

By the time we get to Beyond (which, of course, had a very different creative time that consisted of Simon Pegg, Doug Jung, and Justin Linn), he’s a lot more like the Jim we know and love from TOS. As much as I would love to go back and rewrite all the sexist moments from the first two movies, I also like the idea that it took AOS Jim time to become who he is. Because kindness and hope aren’t easy; they’re work. And in Jim’s case a lot of work, because he literally had to die first. So honestly, I love that dude and the fact that he’s survived and become a better person.

Like I said earlier, I don’t think Abrams really had a vision for his Trek movies. And I think that’s why the rest of the characters are essentially the same as what we saw in TOS but a little more two-dimensional.

Justin Lin didn’t bring a very distinctive visual style to Beyond, but he and his writers treated the characters far better than Abrams did. They removed them from the Enterprise, put them in an entirely new environment, and allowed them to interact in ways we hadn’t seen before. Pegg has talked about how all these people are friends and crew members but we had never seen some of them interact before (I’d link to the interview, but I read it some time last year and have no idea where it was from). So that’s why we get the scenes that are just Uhura and Sulu, these two absolute BAMFs who we’ve never really seen together before. Those kinds of writing decisions allow us to see Uhura and Sulu behaving in new ways, acting not just in relation to the main characters. And even though they are being held captive, they are actively trying to save themselves and the crew, which gives them more agency and just more to do.

I do love the cast. Like, if nothing else, I’m grateful Abrams chose the cast he did. They’re good people and good actors and a constant reminder of how bisexual I am.

As for Gene Roddenberry’s original spirit and goals....I guess I’m not very concerned about that? TOS has a lot of problems, and Roddenberry himself had a lot of problems. After it was announced that Sulu was gay, George Takei criticized the decision because it wasn’t consistent with Roddenberry’s original vision for the character. All due respect to Takei, but I’m just not that interested in Roddenberry’s original vision, especially if it excludes progress.

What I personally want from Star Trek is something that is weird, daring, hopeful, and at least a little bit silly. I don’t think Abrams got that. He talked about a future so bright it couldn’t be contained, but he still gave us a womanizing protagonist and a whitewashed cast. He still blew up a planet and killed Amanda Grayson.

I do have a lot of fondness for the 2009 movie. I like those blinding lens flares, and the comedic beats, and the way they come together as a family at the end; even if the characterization is a bit flat and the relationships aren’t entirely earned, we at least have Michael Giacchino’s score to help give it some emotional heft.

Into Darkness...well, I could spend a lot of time talking about it. I love a lot of the fan work that has come out of it, but I’ve never liked the movie. It’s angry and violent. The inciting incident is Pike’s death, and Jim spends the entire film seeking revenge, and we see the militarization of Starfleet, and cities are destroyed and thousands of faceless people die. I...really don’t like it.

Beyond contains a lot more hope and silliness and comes a lot closer to the tone of TOS. Lin, Jung, and Pegg clearly cared about the characters and understood the source material. We get a lot of philosophizing about the power of friendship and unity, and yeah it’s cheesy, but Star Trek has always been cheesy and that’s part of its appeal. So, if we’re talking about the criteria I listed above (weird, daring, hopeful, and silly), I’d say that it at least meets the last two. And heck, I really love those characters and how they get to grow in Beyond, so I’m willing to forgive it for not meeting the first two.

Sorry, I don’t think I’ve ever taken the time to express my views on AOS before, so that’s probably why this got so long aalsd;sdf. Thank you again for the question!
