i have to wonder what super hardcore militant vegans think should be done about obligate carnivore animals, because in all my painfully-rapidly-approaching-30-years i've literally never actually seen anyone give a clear consistent much less halfway feasible answer on that
#mostly i've just seen like âhow dare you ask questions you just want an excuse to murder you're sealioning ectâ#or worse some vague and wildly improbable nonsense about like. fake robot animals covered in beyond meat or something equally convoluted#which is a thing i did see someone suggest as a serious answer#i mean i already know they think i'm a genetically inferior hateful vampire that should starve to death for the greater good#because my exact combination of health conditions make meat basically the only semi-safe way i can get close to enough nutrients#i know this because they have repeatedly told me that i'm either evil or should be sacrificed or both#and yelled at me for asking questions by bringing up the whole disabled thing and then they're like#âa lot of vegans i know are advocates for disability!â as if that ever means jack shit in the society that results from anything#no matter what you do a vast majority of people in any given society will *not* be advocates for the disabled. i'm sorry they just won't.#and what do you think public perception of people who physically can't survive like that is going to skew towards#in a society founded on the belief that non-vegan diets are evil?#at absolute best we're looking at being a heavily marginalized class generally seen as something like vampires and our existences taboo.#(as if these type's own insistence that they should be allowed to harass and shame people doesn't disprove their assertion that we won't be#thinking it could possibly go any better than that is a fucking fairy tale. human nature doesn't work that way.#you simply cannot eliminate the human desire to designate and abuse a class of have-nots. the absolute best you can do is mitigate damage.#take it from someone who's been multiple kinds of disabled and chronically ill all my life. people will not âjustâ. ever.#i get this even from people who are otherwise very aware of and VERY GOOD at avoiding this sort of thinking#âi'm a disability advocate!â no you are not. you are a poster. my experience has taught me that what people advocate for in their free time#means precisely jack shit for how they will actually act when faced with the situations they make otherwise rational posts about#and the fact of the matter is even if you somehow really are the perfect disability advocate a majority of people WILL NOT BE YOU.#a majority of people in society will be margrat from accounting who clutches her pearls when she sees the gays and thinks autism isnt real#and who has never had a nuanced thought in her life and actively does not want to#a vast majority of people in your Vegan Utopia will not be you and your friends who march with wheelchair users and volunteer at the shelte#a vast majority of people in your Vegan Utopia will be jenny who starved 8 cats to death on broccoli because she can't be bothered#and who thinks that âcarnivoresâ are actual nazis and don't deserve healthcare because she saw someone say that online.#ALWAYS assume your society will be made up mostly of the worst kind of person it can because it WILL ALWAYS BE TRUE and you can't change it#most people seek the low-effort option. and evil is most often banal and low-effort.#i'm just so fucking tired of every single even vaguely lefty-adjacent political movement simultaneously acting like i don't fucking exist#and at the same time that i need to be sacrificed to achieve Utopia. god. at least conservative whackjobs are upfront and honest about#how they think that i'm a burden on society that needs to be Eugenics'd . rather than trying to morally gaslight me about it.

First Impressions | Eddie Munson x Reader
Stranger Things Masterlist / Inbox Summary: Eddie learns that Dustin has a recently reunited sister, and from the moment he meets you he's a goner. (read part 2 here) Content Warnings / Tags: Pure fluff, henderson!reader, tiny mention of a fight but nothing descriptive, not edited, no use of y/n Word Count: 1.4k A/N: Eddie brain rot cause I couldn't keep it in. Don't know if this is my best work but I'm planning to write more chapters on this so it's just a start, hope you like it
âYou need a ride home after this?â It was more of a formality than an actual question, he always drove Dustin home after a session.
âOh thatâs okay, my sister is picking me up.â Dustin didnât even look up from packing his things away, but Eddieâs head shot up.
âYour- you have a sister, since when?â As far as he knew Dustin was an only child, but now he was wrecking his brain trying to think if he had ever mentioned you before.
âI know youâre bad at math Eddie, but I just told you sheâs driving so try and put the pieces together.â Dustin was looking up at him now, challenging him.
âAlright smartass, itâs time for you to shut up.â He told him as he ruffled through his hair, leaving behind an agitated Dustin trying frantically to fix it.Â
The others had already gone home, but Dustin stayed behind late to help Eddie finish up, a habit that became more and more common as the two grew closer. When they finished packing up Eddie locked the door behind them, and while walking to the parking lot decided he wasnât quite done interrogating Dustin.
âIf you have an older sister, how come I've never seen her around before?â
âI mean sheâs been around during holidays before, she lived with dad though but they had a big fight so sheâs moved here.â It seemed like a sore topic, so Eddie dropped it for now.
As they got to the entrance of the school and felt the cool air on their skin Eddie indeed noticed another car in the usually empty lot, and you were sitting on the hood of it, a book in your hands as you patiently waited. The last rays of sunshine graced your figure as if the heavens themselves were blessing you, and Eddie had never been so sure heâd seena goddess in his life. It was just like the tales he knew so well, the ones he still devoted his life to, it was as if they were becoming true. You looked up when you heard them approach, smiling at the sight of them and giving Dustin a quick side hug as they reached you.
âItâs nice to meet you, Iâve heard a lot of good things.â You held your hand out for Eddie to take, but all he could do was look at it, staring ahead as if hitting pause in a game, he stood still. He wanted to react, to not make the most horrible first impression possible, but the longer he looked at you the worse it got, getting lost in sight of your smile.
âAlright, not a fan of handshakes, noted.â You chuckled as you withdrew your hand, and Eddie cursed himself for not having taken the opportunity to feel how soft your skin mustâve been. You looked at him again, your eyes piercing straight through his soul and he wondered if maybe he had found himself in one of his fantasy worlds, he must have. But the next second he shook himself out of it, because you were real, you were real and in front of him and expecting him to say something.
âIâm Eddie.â he said, nodding his head as if to confirm his own statement.
âSo Iâve been told.â Another giggle slipped past your lips, and Eddie wasnt sure if it was from nerves or entertainment, but he was dying to hear more of it, even if he had to make a fool of himself to do so.
Dustins head kept going back and forth as if watching a tennis match of idiocracy. He had never seen Eddie so flustered, so used to the man flaunting with every opportunity that presented itself that this seemed quite out of character. In full disclosure, it was kind of freaking him out to see Eddie so beside himself, and it was freaking him out even further that he couldnât figure out why. It was probably blatantly obvious to anyone else, but maybe it was for the best that Dustin couldnât place where the tension originated from, either way, his patience had run out
âCan we go home now, I still have to call Mike to discuss our net strategiesâ You tore your eyes from Eddie, deciding that maybe it was for the best to head home.
âYeah alright, maybe Iâll see you around Eddie.â You gave him one last smile as you got in the car with Dustin and drove off, but it took him another minute to pick his shambled ego up from the concrete ground as he berated himself for not being able to utter one coherent sentence. As he got in his van and drove home as well he decided heâd have to grill Dustin for more information on you the next time heâd see him. As he got to the trailer he grumbled a hello to Wayne before disappearing to his room, ignoring the backhanded comment he got about his grumpy disposition.Â
He wondered if heâd ever be able to convince you he was cool, whether heâd be able to get you to agree to see him again, but after what just transpired he figured the odds were slim. Not that heâd give up so easily, he didnât have much of a reputation to lose and if heâd be able to get you to laugh again that would be more than enough. But he didnât get to wonder for long as Wayne knocked on his door, he was ready to tell the man to leave him alone, but the next sentence was one that confused him immensely
âSomeone on the phone for you.â Wayne held the phone out to him, expecting him to get up from the bed and take it, but Eddie didnât move an inch.
âFor me, you sure?â He was still not quite sure what to do.
âUnless another Eddie is living here Iâm pretty sure.â He moved his hand again to accentuate the phone that was still on hold, but once again Eddie just sat there.
âIf you want I can tell her to call back-â Thatâs when he sprung into action, snatching the phoen out of Wayneâs handÂ
âNo! No, I got it. Thank you.â The old man simply chuckled as he left again, closing the door behind him to give his nephew some privacy.
Eddie cleared his throat once before picking up the line put on hold.Â
âHello?â he asked, still not quite sure what to do.
âHi, Eddie itâs me, just wanted to see if you were doing alright.â your sweet voice blessed his ears once more. He doesnât know what he did to get the universe on his side like this, but he was grateful for it nonetheless.
âYeah Iâm good, listen-â Eddie figured this time he shouldnât waste his chance, and he probably had some making up to do.
â- Iâm sorry if I freaked you out earlier, just never seen anyone that pretty before.â You were giggling again, and it brought the biggest grin onto his face.
âYou didnât weird me out at all, it was kinda cute. I had to bribe Dustin to let me use the phone so I donât have much time but I was wondering if maybe youâd like to go out this weekend?â Maybe he shouldâve waited a beart before answering, but he was too eager to care.
âGo out, as in a date?â It got him blushing, the red creeping up on his cheeks as he wondered if thatâs really what you were asking
âI mean, kinda, if you want to.â He could almost see you blushing on the other side of the line as well, and he decided it was now or never.
âIâd love to.âÂ
âThatâs great, Iâm still kind of new around here, do you know any good places?â Your smile was present as you spoke, and he was already looking forward to seeing it again, now knowing he wouldnât have to wait long.
âHow about I come and pick you up, we can go to the mall.â His confidence was growing with the minute now, absolutely elated by the turn of events.
âIm looking forward to itâ He wondered what youâd wear, knowing whatever it was it would look beautiful on you, and he knew heâd spend the entire date amazed at your presence.Â
âMe tooâ he said before the both of you hung up the phone, he had already started planning the most amazing evening out, and maybe, he thought, maybe this year really would take a turn for the better.

real me, real you - psh
pairing. sunghoon x fem!reader (ft. jay... sorry)
synopsis. Youâre your schoolâs popular pretty smart girl, but with a twist - you lead a completely different life at home, where you are messy, lazy and foul-mouthed. Only your family and best friend Sumin know about this, until Park Sunghoon, of all people, finds out. The resident cold and arrogant heartbreaker of your school decides to blackmail you into doing his biddings - but you canât say no, not even when he asks you to be his fake girlfriend, otherwise heâll ruin your reputation. But as you and Sunghoon get closer, you realize that maybe heâs not so bad after all, and you may be more similar than you'd originally though - all while your old childhood friend Jay watches from the sidelines.
genre. fake dating, high school au, very slight love triangle action, fluff and angst
warnings. this is the first thing i ever wrote so there may be slightly cringe and awkward things but i didn't wanna change anything lol, hoon is a meanie at some point and everything is dramatic and very fanfic-y, mild childhood trauma for both of them <3
word count. 22.9k
author's note. @end-hyphen genie this one is for you... i hope you still like this fic after all this time lol ! as i said in the warnings i only changed a few typos and punctuation from the original but i decided to not make any major changes bc i think it's nice to see what my writing was like when i had just started out!! hopefully i've improved lol, also this was not inspired by true beauty!! i've never seen the show nor read the webtoon. i was inspired by two mangas called switch girl and kare kano (or his and her circumstances) which have this plot of a girl being two different people at school and at home. anyways hope u guys enjoy this and if u do pls lmk <333
Nobody was supposed to find out.
You were the most popular girl in school, known for your looks, good grades, and kind personality. You had a nice group of friends and the whole school at your feet, students and staff alike. As the student representative, you had an image to keep up and needed everyone to think you were perfect; and they did. So you always wore a smile on your face, kept your head up and made sure your uniform was creaseless, all while maintaining the highest scores in your year. Always being friendly to your peers and helping them out prevented anyone from thinking you were a stuck-up goody-two-shoes. You made high school look like a breeze.
But such a life didnât exist. Who was happy waking up at 6 a.m. every day and dedicating all of their time to schoolwork and student life? You certainly werenât. What you thrived off of was having everyone think you were. Hearing whispers in the corridor of, âSheâs so pulled together!â or âI wish I had her lifeâ, now, those skyrocketed you to heaven. The cherry on top was a nod of approval from a teacher or an âoutstanding job again, Y/Nâ as they handed you back your graded paper. Your favorite color had become the red of the pens your teachers used to write A+ at the top of the page.Â
Youâd always been academically gifted, but as you heard those words more and more, youâd started craving them and doing everything to hear them again until they started controlling you instead of the other way around. Everything you did needed to be perfect. And that was how you had created this persona of the perfect girl who had it all together at the ripe age of 17. But thatâs exactly what it was; a persona.Â
As soon as you stepped off the bus and waved goodbye to your friends, you became another person. Or more accurately, you reverted back to your natural self. You werenât an evil person by any means; it wasnât your intention to actively deceive everyone at school, it was more of a side effect of keeping up appearances. Only your family and your closest friend Sumin knew what you were truly like: greedy, messy, short-tempered, self-centered, and sometimes downright insufferable. Your younger siblings, Sunoo and Yeeun, liked to joke that you had a button you switched on and off whenever you left the house. When on, you were the sweetest girl ever, but when off, all your vices crept up and let themselves known to the world, or rather to your family. You didnât mean to make them suffer, but after a long day of being perfect, you needed to blow off some steam; if they had to be your metaphorical punching bag, so be it.Â
When Sunoo entered high school, you made him swear he wouldnât say a thing to anyone. You trusted him and knew he wouldnât let your secret out - it was too entertaining for him to see you act perfect at school and reveal your true self at home. There was no risk of anyone finding out - you were so intent on keeping the act up that nothing ever slipped you. It had been that way since middle school, and your senior year of high school was going to be no different.
Nobody was supposed to find out, so what was Park Sunghoon doing right in front of you in the frozen aisle of the corner convenience store, just when you happened to be bare-faced, with thick glasses on and a pimple bright red from just having been popped, in your comfiest pajamas, and a tub of Ben & Jerryâs in hand?
âKim Y/N? Y/N, is that you?â
You froze in place, not knowing how to react. There was no way this, your worst nightmare, was actually happening.
When you regained your senses, flight seemed the best way out of this. You avoided Sunghoonâs curious gaze and curtly replied, âNo, sorry, I donât know who that is,â before walking away, iron grip on the ice cream.
But the boy was quicker than you and grabbed you by the wrist, forcing you to turn around. âIt is you! Come on, Y/N, arenât we friends? Do you not recognize me or something?â
If it wasnât for the panic coursing through your veins at that moment, you mightâve laughed at his question. How could you not recognize the Park Sunghoon? Along with Park Jongseong and Sim Jaeyun, or Jay and Jake as they liked to be called, he was only the most popular guy in your year - hell, in the whole school. The three of them had gained attention from freshman year as the three handsome soccer players. Jake and Sunghoon had been attached at the hip since kindergarten, Jay joining them sometime in middle school when he came back from his year abroad in Seattle.Â
Your parents and Jayâs had been college best friends and you two had therefore grown up together, and even used to be quite close. Youâd grown apart when he joined Jake and Sunghoonâs friend group, and although you still got on well, there was always a bit of an awkward atmosphere when you caught up with each other.
The three friends had quite different personalities but their complicity and shared history made them stick together. Jake was known for his academic achievements, rivaling yours, and his friendly personality; Jay, for his surprisingly funny antics once you got past the somewhat menacing appearance (which he blames on his resting bitch face). Sunghoon, on the other hand, was as cold as ice, so much that heâd earned the nickname of ice prince, but girls continued to swoon over him due to his incredibly handsome features. When turning down girls, Jake and Jay always tried to let them down gently, but Sunghoon wasnât one to hold back: heâd laugh in their face or straight up say no, staring them right in the eyes. Most confessions ended in tears (not his, obviously), but girls kept on testing their luck, thinking they might be the one to melt the ice princeâs cold, dead heart.
Clearly, you werenât Sunghoonâs biggest fan.
His behavior had always made you wonder why Jay and Jake were friends with a person like him. They went back a long time, but how did Sunghoon not become a nice and approachable person like his two best friends? They both seemed so genuine, but he looked like he was hiding something. This was what had made you weary of him; you knew all too well how easily an image that was the opposite of reality could be created. So on one hand, you sort of felt for him, thinking he might be in a similar situation as you. But on the other hand, you couldnât help but feel some kind of jealousy: if you acted the way he did, you wouldnât receive half the admiration you did. Hell, youâd probably be hated for it - no one likes a girl thatâs both successful and bitchy about it.Â
One thing was sure, though, and that was that you wouldnât call the two of you friends, as he just had.
âY/N? You okay?â
The pure panic in your eyes mustâve made Sunghoon realize something was wrong. He released you and looked you up and down, trying to take your appearance in. The Y/N he was seeing right then was worlds away from the one he was accustomed to at school.Â
You realized there was no ignoring him, so you collected yourself and faced Sunghoon. âUh, yeah, hi, Sunghoon. Sorry, I just wasnât expecting to see anyone I knew here.â
He chuckled. âYeah, no wonder. You look quite⊠different from what you usually do,â he said, voice laced with sarcasm.
This whole situation got you dumbfounded. You usually knew exactly what to retort when somebody messed with you, your friend or a classmate, but this time, you were completely speechless. You just wanted to escape.
âWell, it was nice seeing you Sunghoon, but I need to get home.â You pivoted on your heels and started walking again, but Sunghoon had other plans.
âAw, come on, so quickly? We barely got to chat!â He followed you through the aisles as you picked up the remaining ingredients on the list your mother had given you as quickly as you could.
âI didnât know you needed glasses. Do you wear lenses at school?â
âYes. I need them to see.â
âI figured.â You could hear the smirk in his voice, and your shock was slowly morphing into anger. Were teenage girls so blind that theyâd have a crush on someone with such an abominable personality, no matter how angelic his face was?Â
âI really like your outfit, by the way. Looks super comfy.â And as if your embarrassment couldnât grow any bigger, he added: âToo bad you got a stain on the shirt.â
You looked down at yourself and noticed a huge grease stain on the collar of your shirt. Admittedly, you didnât always have the best table manners.Â
You swore under your breath. It was quiet for a couple minutes as you arrived at the register and paid for your items, Sunghoon still on your tail. He had apparently given up his purchases to focus solely on tormenting you. When you walked out of the store, you thought he might finally be done. But of course, he wasnât.
âYou know, my sister has this really effective pimple cream she uses. Do you want me to ask her what brand it is?â
That was it. You sighed deeply. âAlright, Park. What do you want?â
When you turned to face him fully, arms crossing over your chest and an obviously tired expression on your face, the mischievous glint in his eyes made you realize something. That idiot was enjoying this.Â
Indeed, he beamed down at you. You had probably never seen him smiling so widely. âWow, Y/N, didnât know you could have such an attitude.â
You stayed silent and continued staring at him, waiting for an answer. He mirrored your pose, out of instinct or to irritate you, you werenât sure.
âYou know, when I moved to this neighborhood before the start of school, I was definitely not expecting to see Perfect Miss Y/N out in her pajamas buying ice cream. I thought you were more into, I donât know, rescuing puppies from fires or something. That sounds like something youâd do in your free time.â
âWell, is there anything wrong with what Iâm doing?â
âOh, absolutely not! Just a surprising sight. Makes me wonder what the rest of the school would sayâŠâ He looked intently at you, clearly waiting for a reaction. You werenât about to give him one, though.
You chuckled and rolled your eyes, shifting your weight on your right foot. âYeah, like anyone would believe you if you said you saw me looking anything else other than perfect.â It mightâve sounded arrogant, but that was the image people had of you. Even your friends asked you how you did it - if only they knew the truth.
At that, his smile got even brighter. âDonât worry about that, I wonât need to tell anyone. Iâll just show them!â He pulled out his phone, showing you a picture of you in your god-awful pajamas searching for your favorite flavor of ice cream.
He watched as your face fell, taking your silence as an opportunity to go on. âYou were so engrossed in the tubs of ice cream that you didnât notice a dashingly handsome and tall young man very obviously taking pictures of you.â
This put you into panic mode again. It might have seemed foolish, but you hadnât worked for years to create a perfect version of yourself only for a stupid boy to destroy it all with one picture.Â
You sighed and lowered your head, taking a moment to think. You didnât know Sunghoon that well, but you didnât put it past him to send that picture to everyone and ruin your image in the process. You opted for honesty instead of bluff. You took your glasses off and looked back up at him; even if you couldnât see him as well without them, maybe heâd see the despair in your eyes better.
âPark. I mean, Sunghoon. You canât show that picture to anyone, okay? You have no idea how bad I need to keep up appearances. Itâs really important to me, so just delete the picture and letâs never talk about this again, yeah?â
You tried smiling at him, but his expression infuriated you. You could tell he had something else up his sleeve. âNow, Y/N, why would I do that? If Iâm gonna do something for you, you should do something for me.â
You werenât sure if you wanted to hear the rest of his thoughts, but you needed to know. Eyeing him suspiciously, you told him to go on.
âWell, I canât think of anything right now, but Iâll let you know when I do, okay? Iâll see you around, Y/N.â He flashed another one of his smiles, patted your head, and walked away, just like that, leaving you standing outside the convenience store on your own, a melting tub of ice cream in your plastic bag. At least for now, you were safe.
Right?
â
âYou saw Park Sunghoon? As in, the Park Sunghoon?â your little sister Yeeun asked, looking at you with huge eyes. You two and Sunoo were sitting on your bed, sharing the ice cream by eating it directly from the tub.
âYes, thatâs literally what Iâve been saying this whole time. How do you know him anyway? Youâre still in middle schoolâŠâ
âAre you crazy? Heâs famous in our whole school district! I wish we had cute boys in my school as well,â she sulked, pouting.
âThatâs not the point, Yeeun,â Sunoo chimed in, then turned to you. âWell, this is either bad news or the start of a beautiful romance.â
âSunoo! Take this seriously! Iâm in a huge dilemma right now.â
Your siblings shared a knowing glance and snickered.
âHey! Iâm right here. Iâm not overreacting, you know. If he does send those pictures around, Iâm done for.â
âOh, come on, Y/N, youâd be so much better off if you could be yourself at school. I see you there almost everyday, and the way you laugh always sounds so fake. Nobody would care if you forgot to put makeup on one day or had a crease in your shirt. If anything, itâd make you look more human.â
You could see where Sunoo was coming from, but you chose to ignore it. You sighed deeply. âYou guys just donât get it. They all see me as this perfect, put-together girl. If I showed them even a glimpse of the truth, everything would shatter. Itâs too late to go back now.â You ignored their pitying looks and took another big spoonful of ice cream.
It was their turn to sigh. As always, it was impossible to reason with you. Deep in your thoughts, you added: âYou know, there was something really off about him today. Iâd never seen him act that way before.â
Your siblings looked at you questioningly. âHeâs always so cold and distant towards everyone. Iâve only seen him smile when heâs laughing with Jake and Jay or when he makes fun of someone. But just now, he kept smiling at me like he was having fun. He even patted my head when he left.â
At that, Yeeun swooned dramatically, hands over her heart. You looked over at her and said, âIâd be swooning too if it was any other guy than Park Sunghoon. Iâm more confused than anything right now, he was a completely different person from when I see him at school.â
They exchanged another look. âYou guys stop doing that!â
âWell, itâs just that that sounds an awful lot like someone I know,â Sunoo replied. Realization hit you and you scoffed, mildly offended. At least you were nice to others at school and didnât act like an asshole with a superiority complex.
âAnyway,â he continued, âwhat will you do about Sunghoon?â
âIâm not too sure. I guess all I can do is wait and see whatever it is he could want from me.â
âYeah, do that, and then date him, please. If I canât have him as my boyfriend, then Iâll have him as my brother-in-law,â Yeeun joked. You didnât have it in you to retort anything back and started laughing along with her.Â
If everything did shatter, at least youâd have your siblings to make you laugh.
âÂ
The next day, you made your way to the bus stop after your daily morning routine: jogging, showering, eating a filling breakfast, choosing the perfect accessories for your school uniform, applying just the right amount of makeup and going over your subjects and tasks of the day. As always, efficiency is the key. You had become so used to this routine that your body did it on its own, which let your mind wander wherever it pleased. Usually, youâd use this time to prepare yourself for the day ahead, but today, the only thing on your mind was Park Sunghoon. What was that boy up to? Was he up to anything, or did you completely imagine his mischievousness yesterday? In any case, you hoped it would all be over soon.Â
You got on the bus and sat down next to Sumin. Your close friend group at school consisted of her, Park Sieun, Lee Heeseung and Choi Jiung, but she was the only one who knew about your secret. You had been friends for so long that you hadnât even been able to hide it: sheâd seen you from all angles, both before, during and after your transformation to who you were now. It was nice having someone else than your siblings to rely on and tell everything to.Â
âMinie, youâll never guess what happened yesterday. I ran into Park Sunghoon at the convenience store next to our apartment unit.â
She raised her eyebrows in surprise, but her reaction wasnât as big as you thought itâd be. She smiled and said, âHuh! I knew heâd moved to our neighborhood, but I wouldnât have thought heâd live so close to you that youâd even shop at the same place.â
She registered your confused expression and continued. âDidnât you hear? He moved out of his parentsâ house at the end of summer. Something about a huge fight with them that made him move out. But there are always so many rumors about him and his group that I donât know what to believe.â
âOh,â you mumbled, unsure what to say. Now that you thought about it, Sunghoon had mentioned moving in your conversation yesterday, but you were so preoccupied with him seeing you in your wild state that you hadnât paid much attention to his comment.
âWait, did he do something? Your face is telling me he did something.â
You got closer to her face and gestured for her to do the same. With lowered heads and in hushed tones, you said, âHe saw me on off-mode.â
She gasped and jolted back in surprise, eyes wide and eyebrows shooting straight up. âWhat?â
You shushed her and pulled her in by her shoulders. âHe even took pictures.â Your grip tight, you held her from jumping again. âThatâs not even it. You know how he's always really cold and distant?â
âYou mean how heâs always being a douchebag?â She scoffed. âYeah, I know.â
You remembered that Sumin had been one of the first of many girls who shot their shot with Park Sunghoon, only to get rejected. You both grimaced at the memory that always left a bad taste in your mouth.
âHe was completely different yesterday. Kept following me around the store and, Iâm not sure, teasing me? Like trying to get a reaction out of me? In a weird half-friendly half-bully way.â
âHm, youâre right, that doesnât sound like him,â she mused. âIt does sound like a stupid teenage boy though, which I guess he is, no matter how hard he tries to pretend heâs not.â
This is what you loved about Sumin. She could see right through people, and never hesitated to say what she thought of them, especially when they acted the way Sunghoon did. Sure, there were some personal feelings attached there, but she had quickly gotten over them when she realized how much of a douche he was towards everyone else.
When the bus stopped to pick up some more students, Heeseung hopped on. You quickly told Sumin to keep it a secret, at which she smiled and made a motion as if zipping her lips and throwing the key. If you told your friends about Sunghoon, youâd have to tell them the truth about how he had dirt on you, but you wanted to keep your friendship clean. You chatted the rest of the bus ride away and tried not to worry over Park Sunghoon too much.
When you finally got to school, you, Heeseung, and Sumin made your way to your classroom to join Jiung and Sieun. Before you could get there, however, Jungwon, an underclassman you had talked to a couple times for student council meetings, called out your name. You told your friends to go on without you and turned to the younger boy.
âJungwon! Hi, whatâs up?â
He seemed flattered that you had remembered his name but quickly got on with his business. âUm, Iâm not sure why, but Sunghoon told me to come and get you? Iâve never talked to him, I think he just picked me randomly and assigned me a taskâŠâ
You sighed. Park Sunghoon truly was something. âThanks for telling me, Jungwon. Iâll make sure he gets an earful for this, he has no right to boss students around like that.â
Jungwonâs eyes doubled in size as he frantically waved his hands in dismissal. âNo! No need to do that, I donât want to get in trouble with him. Iâm just here to relay the message.â At that, he scurried off, and you headed towards Sunghoonâs homeroom.Â
When you walked in, a few people were in the room, some girls gossiping with each other, a couple students doing some last-minute revision for a test. You found Sunghoon sitting at his desk, snickering with Jay and Jake and hoped that the subject of their laughter wasnât you. They noticed you approaching and the two decent boys greeted you; the other one eyed you, that mischievous glint back in his eyes. What could he possibly have in mind?
âHi, guys.â You smiled at Jay and Jake and reflexively stood closer to Jay. âSunghoon, Jungwon said you wanted to see me?â you asked, trying to keep your impatience at bay.
âOh, was that his name? Well, thank heavens for him, âcause I forgot my lunch at home. Would you be a sweetheart and go buy me something at the cafeteria? You know how everything runs out as soon as lunch period starts, and I get really cranky when Iâm hungry.â
You stared at him, wide-eyed. His two friendsâ reaction wasnât very different from yours. Go buy him lunch? Thatâs what he wanted you to do?
âWhat? You donât want to? Thatâs too bad, cause thereâs a picture I think everybo-â
You cut him off before he could finish. âNo! Of course Iâll do it! Canât have our star player go hungry, now can we?â You cringed at your own words and Jay eyed you suspiciously. Sunghoon beamed, and Jakeâs eyes darted back and forth between the two of you in pure confusion. âUm, any preferences?â
His smile got wider. âA tuna mayo would be amazing. Thanks, Y/N! Youâre the best!â
âSureâŠâ you mumbled and quickly walked away, more bemused than ever. You checked your watch. You had 10 minutes before the first bell rang, and you could not be late for class, which meant you needed to hurry.Â
You got back to Sunghoonâs classroom just a minute before the first bell. To your dismay, the class was almost full, and girls had gathered around him, trying to get his attention, but he seemed unbothered by their presence. You braced yourself and walked towards him. As your presence rarely went by unnoticed, most eyes were on you and Sunghoon. Not only were you two some of the most popular kids in school, you also happened to be handing him his lunch, a never-seen-before sight between the two of you.Â
âI also got you banana milk, for good measureâŠâÂ
What had seemed like a great idea a few minutes ago, something to appease the devil in him, now felt like the biggest mistake of your life. The girls around him started whispering left and right and you werenât sure whether they felt bad for you, sensing an incoming rejection, or wanted to tear you to shreds for even trying.Â
The whispers grew even louder when Sunghoon took the sandwich and milk from your hands, thanking you with a smile. Youâd be lying if you said your heart hadnât done a small jump in your chest at that moment. As much as you hated to admit it, if looks were the sole factor for popularity, then you could definitely understand why Park Sunghoon was so loved. His face looked like it had been carved by the gods themselves. When his eyebrows werenât turned in a frown, his eyes looked almost sweet, especially when he laughed. His two moles gave him so much charm, the curve of his nose was so delicate and his pink lips looked so, so softâŠÂ
You cleared your throat and smiled back at him before turning around to walk to your own classroom.
âWait, Y/N!â
You turned back around, all eyes on you. You could feel Jayâs eyes burning holes into you. Sunghoon was still smiling. You thought youâd seen him smile more in the past two days than you had in all the years youâd known him.
âIâll see you later.â
â
And indeed see him later you did. You always hung back a bit after classes ended to get homework done or work out student council issues. Being in an empty classroom brought you some peace and quiet, very different from the busyness and noise of your home. You couldnât even focus in your own room, your siblings or parents always barging in to disturb you. The after-school janitors now knew you by name and saved cleaning the classroom you were sitting in for last.Â
You had been barely sitting there for 5 minutes, nose buried in a math problem, when Park Sunghoon graciously strode in, swung the chair in front of you around and sat on it, arms crossed over its back as he peered at you. You didnât even bother to look up at him as you spoke. âWhat, Park?â
âOh no, back to last name basis already?â he joked. You didnât laugh. He cleared his throat awkwardly. âWow, tough crowd. Anyways, thanks for the sandwich today.â
This made you look at him. Or rather, shoot daggers at him. âYeah, what the hell was that all about? Did you have to pull that little stunt in front of everybody? You know what our school is like! Rumors are gonna start spreading like wildfire.â
âI already told you,â he said with a defensive tone. âForgot my lunch, everything was gonna run out, didnât want to get hungry later,â he said as he shrugged, completely ignoring the latter part of your complaint.
âAnd you couldnât have gone and gotten it yourself?â
He beamed. If it wasnât so damn beautiful, you probably would have started getting tired of his stupid smile already. âWhy would I do that when I could get you to do it?â
You sighed. âI knew you werenât the nicest guy, but I didnât know you could be such an asshole, Park.â
If you hadnât been staring him down so intently, you might not have noticed the falter in his smile, so quick it was.
âOh, come on, Y/N. If anything, Iâm doing you a favor by not sending out to everyone that picture you so desperately want to keep secret. Thing is, doing that wouldnât benefit me in any way, except for getting the satisfaction of seeing everybody realize youâre not as perfect as they think you are. Whereas holding it over your head allows me to do basically anything I want with you. And that, that is just so much fun,â he beams, lowering his voice into a whisper for the last sentence.
What a psycho, you thought. You just sighed once more and returned to your textbook, too weirded out to say anything back. You hoped the silence would make Sunghoon realize how creepy what he had just said was.Â
It was quiet in the room, only the sound of your pencil scratching your notebook could be heard. Sunghoon sat in the same position and watched you working. He often saw you like this, focused and benched over a desk, in the library or walking past your classroom. But it was always in passing, and looking at you so closely made all the worldâs difference. He could see how you scrunched your nose when the problem got particularly difficult, or how your smirk as you solved another one made your left dimple appear. He also liked the annoyed looks you gave him every once in a while, as if his presence was disturbing your focus. He wasnât sure what it was, but there was something about seeing someone who always went about their way with such purpose sitting in such silence.
He decided to break that silence. âYou know, Jay was asking about you earlier.â
You kept your eyes trained on your notebook but abruptly stopped writing, your pencil leaving a small scratch on the paper. This didnât go unnoticed by Sunghoon. âDid he?â you said, trying to sound as uninterested as possible, although you couldnât help but be curious. Ever since Jay and you had grown apart, there was always a part of you wondering what he was up to, how he was doing, if he thought of you once in a while or reminisced about the good old times as you sometimes did.Â
âYeah. I mean, everyone did, but I didnât really care,â he answers simply, and even though youâre itching to push him to say more, you stay quiet. âYouâre right, by the way, I do know the people in our school. The rumors have already started spreading. Up to you whether you wanna deny them or not, though,â he said with a smirk.
âDonât even think about it, Park. Thereâs not a chance in hell Iâll let them think we have a thing going on. I have a reputation to uphold, you know.â
He chuckled. âTrust me, I know. Anyway, he wanted to know why you did that for me. Guess he was jealous you didnât do it for him, too.â
âWhy would he be?â you asked, trying to make the question sound as innocent as possible.Â
âWell, you two go a long way back, right?â he asked tentatively, as if testing the waters.
âYeah, I guess.â
âThen it was probably weird for him to see his childhood best friend and his best bro interacting out of nowhere, even though weâve both seen each other around a lot and nothing has ever come out of that. Donât you think?â
A beat passed as you thought about it. âYeah, I guess thatâd look weird to him,â you replied, trying to keep the disappointment out of your voice.
You quickly wrote down your last answer, packed up your things, and stood up. âWell, Iâm off now. Iâll see you around, unfortunately.â
Sunghoon, surprised at your quick departure, scrambled to get off his chair and chased after you. âDo you want me to drop you off? Iâve got a car, you know. Much more glamorous than the bus.â
You turned around and looked at him. âIâd rather get hit by said bus than get in your car, Park.â
He stood there, watching you walk away with a smirk on his face as your ponytail swayed from side to side. This was going to be a challenge. You were going to be a challenge.Â
Thing is, he loved a good challenge.
â
Back home, you flopped down on your bed and buried your face in your pillow. You laid there for a few minutes, taking some time to gather your thoughts and try to understand Sunghoonâs actions. It was of no use; you werenât a mind-reader, and he seemed impossible to figure out. He could make you do basically whatever he wanted to, and he decided to make you get him lunch, creating rumors along the way? What could he possibly get out of that?
Your reflexions were quickly interrupted, however, by a flurry of incoming messages on your phone. Someone had posted a photo of you handing his banana milk to Sunghoon on your schoolâs Instagram account - because apparently, your school was so obsessed with gossip that they had created an Instagram page just for it. The photo had blown up among your peers and it made you wonder if people really were that bored with their lives.
People you barely knew but that felt entitled to knowing your relationship status were DMing you, asking about todayâs events. You quickly got tired of it, so you texted your worried and confused friends that you didnât feel like talking tonight and would catch up with them tomorrow. You opened your textbook, deciding that studying would be the best and most efficient distraction.
When your parents called you and your siblings for dinner, you still werenât feeling great. Your family quickly registered your annoyed expression and could only hope for the best. You already werenât the easiest to live with, but when you were tired, you just got a hundred times worse.
âSo, how was everyoneâs day?â your mom asked cheerily.
Yeeunâs eyes lit up instantly. âMine was great! I met a really cute boy. His name is Nishimura Riki and he just transferred from Japan.â
âOh, thatâs nice!â
âYouâre too young to be thinking about boys, Yeeun.â
Your mom and dad had replied at the same time, then gave each other a stern look.
âIâm not thinking about him, Dad, just looking,â your sister replied, earning a chuckle from your concerned father.Â
âMine was alright. I guess the start-of-a-new-year excitement has already worn off. After a week,â Sunoo said with a sigh.Â
Your mom turned to you. âWhat about you, Y/N?â
âIt was fine.â
The sharpness of your tone changed the atmosphere in the room at once. You ignored the looks your family exchanged and continued eating your food, eyes not leaving your plate.
For some reason, Sunoo thought itâd be a great idea to chime in. âSheâs not happy because she had to buy Park Sunghoon his lunch and everybody went crazy over it.â
âSunoo!â you protested. Your parents didnât need to know about this sort of stuff.
âPark Sunghoon? Is that someone weâre supposed to know?â your dad questioned.
Yeeun scoffed. âUh, heâs only the most popular and handsome guy at Y/N and Sunooâs school, dad. Duh.â
âRight. Duh,â your dad said, imitating your sisterâs tone.
âAnd why did you have to buy his lunch, Y/N?â your mom asked.
âBecause he saw what she looks like when sheâs not at school,â Sunoo said, not even giving you the chance to reply yourself.
âSunoo!â you scolded again.
âAnd now I guess heâs using that against her to get her to do what he wants? Right, Y/N?â
You glared at your brother and let a beat pass. âRight,â you reluctantly admitted.
âLuckyâŠâ your sister mused, expression like she was daydreaming about being Sunghoonâs personal assistant.
Your dad ignored your sister and looked straight at you. âThatâs inadmissible, Y/N. You canât let him do that.â
âYour fatherâs right, sweetie. Itâs not right,â your mom added when you stayed silent.
With everybodyâs eyes on you, you felt obligated to reply. âItâs fine. Itâs not like he asked me to do anything crazy. Iâm sure heâll stop soon enough.â
âYou know, boys that age, theyâll do anything to get a girlâs attention,â your dad warned. âJust ignore him and heâll go away.â
âIf she ignores him, heâll tell everyone what sheâs really like,â your brother explained.
âAnd whatâs so bad about that? Iâm sure itâd be easier if you stopped lying to everyone.â
Everyone suddenly stopped in their motions, wondering why your mom would say something so true yet so controversial. You looked up at her. âWhatâs so bad about that? Whatâs so bad? I donât know, maybe the fact that Iâve worked so hard all these years for everybody to like me and look up to me only for a stupid picture taken by a stupid boy to ruin everything,â you said all in one breath, voice coming out harsh. You were tired of having to explain the same thing over and over again - your parents just didnât understand why you did what you did.
Your mom opened and closed her mouth again, knowing it was useless trying to talk sense into you. It never ended well when you had this conversation.
âWho put mushrooms in this anyway? You know I hate mushrooms,â you said before filling up your bowl and taking it to eat in your room, making sure youâd slammed your door behind you.
â
On the bus the next day, you tried to explain the events of the previous day to your friends.
âThereâs nothing really to it. He just asked me to get him lunch so I did, and when I handed it to him, his whole class was there and saw everything.â
âI get that, but I just donât understand why he made you do it in the first place, or why you agreed,â Heeseung said, âitâs so unlike the both of you to do something like that.â
You hadnât even thought to come up with an excuse for your and Sunghoonâs yesterday - your friends were definitely super confused, but you didnât want to tell them the truth, so you had to quickly find something to say that was somewhat believable, and change the subject.
âI have no idea why he did what he did, but I didnât want to cause a scene so I just agreed. I donât really care, to be honest, I just wish it didnât have such consequences. People seem to think weâre characters on a stupid Netflix coming-of-age series or something, when we literally just go to their school.â
As soon as youâd turned your phone back on this morning, it started pinging with all the messages that had flown in since last night. People were talking about it everywhere: Kim Y/N, highly sought-after bachelorette, had offered Park Sunghoon, notorious rejecter of girls and breaker of hearts, a sandwich and a banana milk, and he had taken them. Whatâs more, he had been seen at lunch heartily eating them. This was serious.
You didnât think things could get any worse until you got to school. You were used to random people coming up to you in the hallways or in class for help, except today they werenât asking for help at all - they were asking what was up between you and Sunghoon, as though handing him a tuna mayo was like asking for his hand in marriage. Most of them were just curious, but some, especially his fanclub members, had an aggressive tone to their voice, which you werenât used to. If people started liking you less because of Sunghoon, you were going to kill him.
But you had to hold onto that thought, because an all too familiar voice had suddenly called out to you on your way to class. You took a deep breath and turned around, watching him take long strides towards you. You immediately became aware of the amount of people in the hallway and realized you couldnât talk to him like you had the previous day in front of everybody. You mustered the fakest smile you could and greeted him.
âHi, Sunghoon. What can I help you with today?â
He smiled, obviously enjoying the fact that you had to be nice to him. âIâve got my sports bag because of practice later tonight. Mind holding onto that for me for the day?â
Your fake smile turned a bit crazy as your eyes widened in disbelief. "Donât you have a locker for that, Sunghoon?â
âYeah, but itâs so much more fun if youâre the one to hold it.â And with that, he threw the bag in your direction, leaving approximately 0.5 seconds to catch it. âIâll need that later today. Meet me in front of the locker rooms after school, yeah?â
He didnât bother to wait for your answer and walked away, Jake and Jay following closely behind. Jay sent you a questioning look, to which you could only reply with a shrug. If it wasnât for all the students in the hallway, you wouldâve been yelling Sunghoonâs ear off at that point. Unfortunately, that wasnât a possibility, so you just smiled to your friends who were looking more confused than ever.
âLetâs just go to class, guys.â
â
Throughout the whole day, you could feel people staring at you, then at the bag you were holding, then starting to whisper among themselves. You tried your best to concentrate in class so you could momentarily stop pondering over what Sunghoonâs evil master plan might be, but everyone seemed bent on making that usually simple feat impossible. When 3:30 p.m. finally came around, you bid your friends goodbye and headed to the boysâ locker room. Every boy walking in eyed you suspiciously, unsure as to what you could be doing there. Of course, Sunghoon had to take his sweet time to get there.Â
Staring at the opposite wall and planning Sunghoonâs murder in your head, you hadnât noticed Jay and Jake arriving. Jay signaled for his friend to go inside the locker room and told him heâd join him in a minute. He waved his hand in front of you to get your attention, a smile on his face. You sighed in relief at the familiar sight of your friend.
âHey, Jay. Sorry I didnât see you.â
âYou okay, Y/N? You look like youâre about to murder someone,â he said, slightly amused.
âIf only you knew,â you mumbled.
He noticed the bag in your hand. âYou waiting for Sunghoon?â
âYeah. If only he could hurry up a little bit. Iâve got stuff to do.â
There was something about Jay that made it impossible to lie to him. Maybe it was the fact that you had known each other for so long, way before youâd turned into what you were now, that made you feel as though showing a side of you that gets annoyed and impatient and doesnât smile all the time was okay.
Jay looked at his feet before looking back up at you. You were still staring at the wall but your murderous thoughts had somewhat calmed. âMind telling me what this whole thing with Sunghoon is about?â
You turned to him and were about to fumble for an answer when someone interrupted you. âWhat whole thing with me?â
Whew. Saved by Sunghoon. You didnât like that it was thanks to him that you could get out of answering Jay, but at least you didnât have to come up with yet another stupid excuse.
Jay turned his attention to his friend and stood up straighter. âYou know, making her get you lunch or hold your bag all day. Thereâs dozens of girls whoâd be more than happy to do that for you, so why Y/N? She doesnât have time for this stuff.â
You looked at Jay with surprise. Sure, you were friends, but you hadnât thought heâd defend you like that in front of Sunghoon.
âWell, Y/Nâs just such a nice, reliable person. No one better to ask to do those things.â What a reason, you thought. He turned to you and took the bag from your hands. âThanks, Y/N. Iâll see you outside in a couple minutes.â
âHuh? What do you mean? Iâm leaving,â you said, body already headed towards the other direction.
âWhat? You canât leave before practice has even started. Go to the benches outside, weâll be out in a few.â
You were about to open your mouth to protest, but he cut you off. âYou donât want to?â He started pulling out his phone. âThatâs funny, because thereâs a pict-â
âIâll be on the benches! See you soon!â you quickly said, pushing the two boys inside the locker room, Sunghoon smirking, Jay looking at you in utter confusion.
Girls sat in a few different groups in the bleachers. You recognized the girls in one of those groups, so you decided to sit with them. As you approached, they quickly looked at each other and then back at you, expressions half-friendly, half-what-the-hell-are-you-doing-here.Â
âHi guys! Mind if I join?â
âHi Y/N! No, of course not, come sit,â Jakeâs girlfriend, Yujin, said.Â
âAre you guys here to watch practice?â
âYeah! Iâm here on girlfriend duties for Jake. These two are just here for the eye candy and to keep me company,â Yujin explained.
âYeah, but mostly for the eye candy,â added her friend Wonyoung.Â
âWhat about you, Y/N? Iâve never seen you here,â asked the last girl, Gaeul.
âOh, um, Sunghoon asked me to come, actually.â You regretted your words as soon as youâd let them out. They all ooh-ed at your response, making you blush, which just egged them on. This was nothing to blush about, Y/N. Youâd just made the rumors get a hundred times worse with one sentence.
âThe whole schoolâs been talking about you two, you know. Anything you wanna share? Donât worry, we can keep a secret,â said Wonyoung with a wink. You chuckled awkwardly.
âOh my gosh, yes, tell us!â
âGuys, donât make her uncomfortable,â Yujin chimed in, smiling at you. You returned her smile, grateful, once again, that you didnât have to explain your new link to Sunghoon. âLook, practice is starting.â
You turned your head towards the field as the soccer players started doing laps as per the coachâs instructions. Your eyes immediately drifted towards Sunghoon without you even realizing it. His lean figure hypnotized you. The last time you had had PE with him was in freshman year, and puberty had hit him like a fine, fine truck. You couldnât take your eyes off of him as he lightly jogged next to his friends, chatting like it was nothing. You werenât being very subtle with your stare and he eventually noticed you, sending a wink your way. This made you snap out of your reverie and you scowled at him, as if he could make out your annoyed expression from such a distance. You turned back to the girls, who were giggling at you.
âWow, those were some serious heart eyes you were giving him, Y/N,â Gaeul giggled.
You opened your mouth in mild shock. âWas not!â
âSure, whatever you say,â she replied knowingly. âWell, look all you want. Warm-up is the best part. It gets boring when they actually start playing.â
âNo way! Watching them play is my favorite part,â Yujin disagreed.
âYeah, thatâs cause youâve got someone to root for,â retorted Wonyoung. She looked at you slyly. âWell, I guess Y/N does, too.â
You scoffed. âBelieve me, I will not be rooting for him.â
You started staring at him again, this time with a glare in your eyes. From their silence, you deduced the girls mustâve judged it a better idea to not question you too much. After the boys were done with running exercises and stretching (which you had enjoyed watching a bit too much, if you spoke truthfully), they started playing. The coach split the boys into two teams, Jay leading one and Sunghoon the other. It was a very close game. You could never tell who was leading, although that might have been due to your extensive lack of knowledge in the sport. All you knew was that you desperately wanted to see Sunghoon lose; that might put him down a peg. What you told yourself, however, was that you wanted Jay to win. So when he scored a goal, you surprised the girls next to you, the boys on the field and yourself as you jumped up and down, cheering for him. Realizing what you were doing, you quickly sat down and sent him an awkward thumbs up.
Jay tried to hide it, but he was blushing. Hard. Truth be told, he had noticed your little eye contact moment with Sunghoon during warm-up and hadnât particularly enjoyed it. So seeing you cheer for him like that made him swell with pride, which only grew when Sunghoon scored and you barely reacted.Â
When the game was over, you thought you might be able to finally go home and start studying. But Sunghoon had other plans for you, as always these past couple days. Heading towards the showers, he motioned for you to come down from the benches. As you did, Jay walked past, and you smiled at each other.
âGood game.â
âThanks, Y/N.â He continued walking as Sunghoon reached you.
âWhat about me? I scored a goal, too.â
âOh, did you? Didnât even notice," you said, looking at your nails. The polish was starting to chip - youâd need to reapply a layer tonight.
âWhatever. Wait for me, yeah?â
âWhat? No! I gotta go home!â But your protests were in vain, as he completely ignored you.Â
You waited outside the school with Yujin, Wonyoung and Gaeul. After a little while, Jake, Jay and Sunghoon joined you guys, having successfully showered and not smelling of sweat and dirt, thank God. Yujin was dropping her boyfriend and her friends off, so they bid their goodbyes and headed towards her car. Sunghoon and Jay also started to walk towards the parking lot, leaving you standing alone, not sure what to do. Sunghoon turned around and looked at you with a frown.
âWhat are you doing?â
âI donât know, what are you doing?â
âIâm dropping you and Jay off.â
âOh,â you mumbled, taken aback. âDidnât know I was just supposed to guess that.â
As soon as Sunghoon started to drive, you noticed the awkward air between the three of you. Luckily, after years of being a people-pleaser, you had become somewhat of an expert in making small talk, which helped prevent a silent ride. You donât think you couldâve gone through that without a mental breakdown.
Because you and Sunghoon lived closer to each other (and we all know the consequences of that), Jay was dropped off before you. âIâll see you guys tomorrow at school,â he said before giving you a last glance.
âBye, Jay.â
âSee you, bro.â
Thankfully, you only lived a couple minutes by car from Jayâs and hoped the rest of the car ride would be peaceful. Which was really stupid of you to hope for, because you were in the car with Park Sunghoon.
âSo, Park Jongseong, huh?â he said, eyes trained on the road in front of him. Even though he was trying to keep his tone light, you thought you detected a slight harshness to his gaze.
âWhat about him?â
âI donât know, you tell me.â
âThereâs nothing to say. Weâve just been friends for a long time.â
It was silent for about five seconds. âYou really feasted your eyes during warm-up, huh?â
âShut up, Park.â
âNo, itâs alright, I get it. Iâd do the same.â He laughed at his own joke that wasnât really a joke. Why was he laughing, anyway?Â
You looked at him. His face was so different from all those times youâd seen it at school. His eyes, rid of the harshness youâd seen earlier, crinkled at the edges and had an amused glint in them. His smile dug pretty dimples into his cheeks and you let your gaze linger long enough to notice he had sharp, vampire-like canines, which were surprisingly cute. You didnât know why he was showing you a side of him he never showed anyone, except for his close friends, you assumed. You werenât sure what overcame you, but you chuckled with him.Â
âSo, do you already know what task youâre gonna give me tomorrow?â you asked, genuinely curious.
âHmm, havenât really thought about it yet. Iâd rather keep it a surprise, anyway. Keep you on your toes.â
âPfft. What a great surprise.â He laughed again, and you couldnât help but join him. He was unusually giddy that day, but you didnât want to complain. This was a thousand times better than the arrogant Sunghoon with his Iâm-better-than-all-of-you facade. What you didnât know was that he, too, liked your snarky, no-nonsense side infinitely more than the model student, pretty girl persona you had created for yourself.
Finally at your house, you got out of the car and headed to your house after waving goodbye to Sunghoon. He rolled his window down and leaned out of it.
âY/N?â
You turned around. âYeah?â
âAbout your task tomorrowâŠâ
ââŠYeah?â
âIâm sure youâll love it.â He gave you an umpteenth wink, rolled his window back up and drove off.
You werenât so awful to your parents and siblings that evening.
â
The next day at school, you were wondering why Sunghoon had said you would love your task. Because you were, in fact, quite loathing it. He had found you studying during your free period after lunch and dragged you to the part of the library where it was okay to talk a bit over whisper level. You were currently going over a scene in The Tempest which you had seen in AP English Lit last year and clearly had no time for. But obviously, that wasnât a problem to Sunghoon, who just wanted to get a passing grade on his English essay without putting in too much effort.Â
After twenty minutes of going over the same five lines, you were about to give up. âLook, Sunghoon, I donât mind helping you. Iâve tutored dozens of students before so Iâm used to it. But youâre not making any effort! If you want to get it, you need to at least try.â
âBut itâs so boring,â he whined, not unlike a child. âHow am I supposed to find any meaning in this? Itâs just stupid people doing stupid stuff on a stupid island.â You cringed at his words and hoped Shakespeare wasnât listening in on this conversation.Â
âItâs not stupid. Itâs about power, and being punished for chasing it, and itâs a metaphor fo-â
âUgh!â he groaned loudly. âYou know what, I donât care enough about this. Just write the essay for me, okay?â He got up and left, again not waiting for your answer. You wanted to protest, but you know what would happen if you said no to any of his requests, so you just quickly got to work.
Everyday over the next couple of weeks, Sunghoon would find something for you to do. Most days, heâd just get you to buy him lunch (although he thankfully had started paying you back) or carry his stuff around like the first two times. He didnât ask you again to tutor him, however, so you had gotten used to sitting in an empty class together after class, you doing his homework for him and attempting (and failing) to explain it to him, and him alternating between playing on his phone and looking at you. Although itâd flustered you at first, not used to having someone stare at you while you were trying to concentrate, youâd grown somewhat okay with it - all of your complaints were ignored anyway. One time, he even got you to work on his science project with him, a weirdly-shaped volcano he needed to paint and decorate before actually putting the chemicals in. Youâd be lying if you said it hadnât been fun painting it together, occasionally ïżœïżœaccidentallyâ getting paint on the otherâs hand or cheek instead of the volcano.Â
You went to see him at practice two to three times a week, although you werenât sure what use that had for him. If anything, you were probably the one who enjoyed yourself more. Perhaps, after being forced to spend so much time with him, you had started to soften up to him. And, perhaps, that made you appreciate his good looks even more. You couldnât deny the effect his damp hair, stuck to his forehead with sweat, had on you.Â
The rumors hadnât died down, but people had started getting used to seeing the two of you together around, so they didnât ogle their eyes at you everytime you and Sunghoon had some kind of interaction. Not liking that you couldnât control peopleâs opinion of you anymore, you were still a bit bothered by them, but Sunghoonâs little posse of fangirls didnât seem to be. Theyâd been the one to question you the most, and you got a few nasty looks in the hallway, but the gossip around school hadnât stopped them from keeping on following him around, harassing him from morning to afternoon by going to his homeroom at breaks, sitting at a table near him at lunch, and going to see him at practice. Their group had dwindled down, though; most likely, some of them thought you two might be dating and had finally realized they didnât stand a chance with the one and only Park Sunghoon. Thank God you had your friends and now sometimes Yujin, Wonyoung and Gaeul around you during those times, otherwise, youâd probably have been jumped. Spending so much time with him had kept you a couple times from your friends, which theyâd complained about, but sensing that they couldnât do much about it, they let you be, even though they hadnât gotten a satisfactory explanation yet.
One person who didnât want to, or rather couldnât let it go, though, was Jay. He still couldnât figure out why youâd started spending so much time with Sunghoon, seemingly overnight, and it created an unpleasant, sour pit in his stomach. Out of all the people you couldâve decided to form a new friendship with, whyâd it have to be his best friend, meaning he saw you more often now than before, but not because he was the one you had come to see? Why did you never get him banana milk for lunch, and whyâd you only start coming to soccer practice because Sunghoon had asked you to? Heâd tried to ask both of you about it, but you always gave him half-assed excuses that didnât make much sense.Â
He realized what he was feeling was jealousy the day you came into their homeroom before the first bell rang and asked Sunghoon how his science project had gone. Youâd never asked him how his science project, or any of his projects or tests, for that matter, had gone. He recognized it as the same feeling he had harbored when he had come back from the US in middle school and saw you dating Choi Soobin, or when Lee Heeseung had joined your tight-knit group of friends in freshman year. You and Soobin had only dated for three weeks and a half because you had a relationship-terminating argument over mint chocolate ice cream, and you and Heeseung had never become more than friends, nor had the intention to. But Jay didnât care about that; all he saw was that there were boys around you that werenât him. He had never acted upon those feelings, dismissing them as over-protectiveness for someone he had known since forever, but seeing Sunghoon and you laughing together hit too close to home. He couldnât ignore how he felt because he was reminded of it everyday, but he didnât know what to do with these newfound emotions.
And whatâs the best thing to do whenever you donât know what to do? Talk to your friends. Or well, in this case, your friend. He didnât wanna talk about you to Sunghoon. He was a firm believer of bro code, but he didnât wanna bottle up his feelings like he had all these years. So he went to Jake and told him everything, from your childhood friendship to Soobin, Heeseung and now Sunghoon.
âI know itâs stupid. Itâs this whole clichĂ© of, you only realize what you have when you lose it.â
âWell, you havenât really lost Y/N, you know. Itâs not like Sunghoon and her are dating.â
âI guess not, but he clearly likes her. Itâd be a dick move to go after her now that theyâve got something going on.â
Jake hesitated for a second, debating whether he should say what he was thinking, but ultimately deciding it might be better to do it. âYou know, Iâm not sure that he does. You know what Sunghoonâs like. Heâs never very honest about his intentions. I donât wanna bring the subject up with him, cause I donât wanna cause any drama, but itâs so suspicious to me that heâs suddenly spending time with Y/N when heâs never mentioned her all those years and when he rejects all these girls all the time.â
âI think itâs weird, too,â agreed Jay. âI just canât seem to figure it out. And Iâm a bit scared for Y/N, to be honest. Remember that girl in freshman year? Theyâd gotten along really well when he suddenly dropped her. I still remember his cold-ass stare when he turned her down. It even chilled me, man.â
âGod, yeah, I always forget about that. He may be a jackass to all those girls, but when you know what heâs really like like we do, it seems so unlikely that heâd do something like that.â
Jay sighed and looked out into the distance. âI just hope he doesnât hurt Y/N.â
Jake looked at his friend, thinking how to phrase his next sentence. âLike I said, I donât wanna cause any drama⊠but, man, if you donât want him to hurt Y/N, just donât let him. If you make a move on her, you might get to her before he does. Better to do that now than to have to pick up the pieces, donât you think?â
Jay mentally thanked the heavens for gifting him with a friend like Sim Jaeyun. âYes, that is much, much better.â
He was going to stop sitting on his feelings and finally let them see the light.
â
But before that, Sunghoon had another one of his requests for you. You were sitting together in an empty classroom after school as you often did these past weeks. For you, today was an ordinary day, but the boy in front of you had something else in mind. He wasnât saying anything but you could feel his nervousness and it was starting to make you feel anxious as well.
You lifted your head from your notes and looked at Sunghoon who seemed lost in his thoughts. âWhat is it, Sunghoon?â
This made him snap out of his reverie. âUm, nothing.â
âWell, seeing how youâve been tapping your foot at the speed of lightning ever since we got here, it doesnât seem like nothing.â You crossed your arms over the table and looked at him more intently, eyes asking him to tell you what was on his mind.
He sighed, giving in. âI was just thinking⊠thereâs something I wanna tell you.â
âGo on. â
âI need you to date me.â
Your breath caught in your throat. Park Sunghoon⊠needed you⊠to date him? Was he asking you out? The way heâd worded it was a bit odd, but you didnât put it past him.
Taking in your silence and wide eyes, he quickly added: âNot in that way! I, um, need you to be my fake girlfriend.â
Oh.
So he wasnât asking you out. You werenât sure why that made you so upset, but you tried to keep the disappointment out of your eyes and voice.
âRight,â you said, tone a bit harsher than youâd meant it to, âand why would I do that?â
Sunghoon smirked lightly. âWell, first of all, you donât have much of a choice.â You rolled your eyes at that. Itâd been a few days since the reason why you had started hanging out in the first place had come up, and you didnât like to be reminded of that god-forsaken picture.Â
âAnd second of all⊠I guess I should be completely honest with you.â This piqued your interest, and you leaned back on your chair to listen to him.Â
âWhen I saw you at the store and took pictures of you, I wasnât really thinking of doing anything. Maybe just get a laugh or two and tease you about it. I even told you outside the store that I didnât know what I was gonna do. To be honest, I didnât really think there was anything you could do for me that Iâd need to force you to do. So I thought about it all night. And I asked myself, whatâs the thing that pisses me off the most at school that you could change?â he looked at you expectantly, as if you could figure it out. You just shrugged.
âItâs those girls that keep following me around. All these years, Iâve acted like a giant asshole with them and still they think they have a crush on me or whatever. And Iâve never liked any of them, theyâre all so superficial and ask me out without having ever talked to me before. So I thought, hey, maybe if I have a girlfriend, theyâll leave me alone. Which is why I made you do all those things for me.â
âSo that theyâd think we were dating?â you asked, trying to take all this information in. Youâd sort of known it this entire time, but Sunghoon blatantly admitting heâd been using you hurt nonetheless.
âYeah. But obviously, you always denied the rumors, so it hasnât worked as well as I thought it would. It still did a bit though. So I think, if we take it the next step, and actually pretend weâre dating, it should really work. But I need your full cooperation on this, okay?â He looked at you, hopeful eyes and hands in prayer.
You sighed. As he said, it wasnât like you had much of a choice.
âPlease, Y/N? I really want them off my back.â
âFine, Park, Iâll do it. But this better be the last thing you make me do.â You couldnât help but sound cold. This made you rethink these past few weeksâ events. Were you the only one actually enjoying spending time together?
âThanks, Y/N. And yeah, of course. You wonât have to carry my bag or get my lunch anymore if you want. Maybe itâll be more believable if I do that for you.â
You had focused your attention back to your homework, wanting this conversation to be over as soon as possible.
âIâll also pick you up in the morning, so you donât need to take the bus.â
You hummed in response.
âUm, and Iâll also drop you off after school and after practiceâŠâ Sunghoon trailed, troubled by your silence. You hadnât been so cold since the first couple times you two had talked, and he hated the idea that that might be because of what he had just said. So he took a chance.
âYou know, Y/N, this doesnât change anything. I wouldnât have made you do all those things if I didnât like spending time with you. Youâre really nice to be around,â he admitted shyly.
You were far too flustered to lift your head and let him see your face. You just grinned and murmured, âWhatever, Park.â
â
Sunghoon kept his promise and picked you up in the morning. He called you at exactly 7:55 a.m., saying he was waiting outside and you rushed out of your house, piece of toast still in your mouth. In the car, you two went over what being in a fake relationship would involve.
âWe just need to be seen around together, right?â you proposed, hoping your lack of experience wasnât showing.
Thankfully, Sunghoon had no idea what being in a relationship, fake or not, entailed either. âYeah, I think. And maybeâŠâ he hesitated.Â
âMaybe?â you prodded, hoping he wouldnât (or actually would, but youâd never admit it) say what you thought he was about to say.
âI donât know, like, hold hands, and⊠kiss.â The last part had barely been audible, but youâd still heard it.
âKiss?â you echoed, voice almost a shriek. âI donât think we need to go that far, Sunghoon.â A little voice in your head was saying that youâd really like to go that far but you made it shut up.
He was blushing profusely but didnât want to drop the subject there. âAt least on the cheek, or something. We do have to make it believable.â
And there it was. The little sentence, reminding you none of this was real. Seemed like that was a pattern in your life.
You looked out the window. Sunghoon glanced over at you, cursing himself for always saying the wrong thing. He was trying so hard to drown his blooming feelings for you that he kept on hurting you in the process. This whole fake-dating plan was the perfect excuse for him to spend more time with you without having to come to terms with his feelings.Â
âCâmon, Y/N, itâll be fun. Promise.â He nudged your arm playfully, making you look at him. His smile was contagious; you could never help yourself but start grinning when you saw his face light up like that. Maybe heâs right, you thought. Maybe this wonât be so bad after all.
When you arrived at school, Sunghoon told you to wait for a second. He got out of the car and quickly walked around to your side, opening the door for you. You hated how your heart fluttered at the sweet gesture, reminding yourself it was just for show. The important part was that it fooled everyone else, and it did - as you took Sunghoonâs hand, letting him help you out of the car, and walked with him hand in hand towards the school gates, you could feel all eyes on you. You could hear whispers of see, I told you they were dating! and defeated no ways.Â
You realized you didnât care about what anybody might be seeing, which was a first for you. Youâd always made sure everybody saw you exactly the way you wanted to see them. As he was the most popular guy in school, dating Park Sunghoon at once helped your reputation and put you on many girlsâ bad side. But holding his hand, you felt as though there was some kind of barrier protecting you. Youâd never felt so exposed and so safe at the same time.
You noticed Jay standing next to the gates, looking particularly antsy. Heâd texted you that morning, saying there was something he wanted to tell you. Usually, youâd have stayed up, overthinking what that could be, but what with today being the day youâd announce yourself to the world (your school) as Park Sunghoonâs (fake) girlfriend, you had had other things to worry about. You gestured at Sunghoon towards Jay. Your friend only saw you when you were calling his name, standing right in front of him.
âOh, hi, Y/N! I-âÂ
He immediately cut himself off when he saw yours and Sunghoonâs interlaced fingers. Embarrassed, you took your hand out of your fake boyfriendâs, opting for holding onto his pinky instead, not realizing that it was a much cuter action that made one boyâs heart flutter and the otherâs fill up with sadness.
âThere was something you wanted to tell me?â you asked with a small smile.
âUh- yeah, but itâs not important, actually. We can talk about it later.â
âOh, you sure?â
âYeah, donât worry about it.â He returned your smile, hoping to make the situation less awkward. It was very obvious he didnât want to say whatever it was he needed to tell you in front of Sunghoon, which you had both understood.
Sunghoon spoke up. âRight, well Iâll see you in class, Jay. Y/N, Iâll walk you to yours.â And with that, he started walking, holding his friendâs gaze for a few steps. You turned back to look at Jay for a split second, trying to decipher what had just happened, but Sunghoon grabbed you by the waist, making you look up at him in surprise, and breaking Jayâs heart even further.
â
Once Sunghoon and you got to your class, you felt as though you were in one of those movies where the boy drops the girl off at her house after their first date. Except that this was in a crowded school hallway two minutes before the first bell rang. What you had in common with that girl from the movie, however, was that you were freaking out over what your boy was going to do next. In the car, youâd ended up agreeing to a kiss on the cheek, but you hadnât realized it would be happening so soon.
As you two hovered around your classroomâs door, you looked at each other and giggled. Damn, you were selling this well. So well that if you could have ascended out of your body and looked at the scene as a third party, youâd probably have barfed all over yourself.Â
You were still holding his pinky. You could tell he was too hesitant to do anything now that you had reached the classroom, and so you mustered all of your courage, stood on your tippy toes and softly pressed your lips to his cheeks. (You were pretty sure youâd heard gasps around you.) Your courage went as fast as it came, and as realization hit you, you quickly squeaked âbye, Sunghoonâ and practically ran to your seat. The boy stood there for another second or two, hand going to his cheek where you had just kissed him. He walked happily to his own classroom, completely oblivious to the stares he was receiving.
Heeseung, Jiung and Sieun were looking at you in disbelief as you approached them. Sumin, on the other hand, looked like she had paid no attention whatsoever to the scene.
âY/N,â Sieun teased in a sing-song voice. âCare to explain what just happened?â
âDonât tell me youâve actually managed to make the oh-so-great Park Sunghoon fall for you?â Jiung asked jokingly.Â
You looked down in an attempt to hide your grin. You usually did that sort of stuff to appear humble when someone complimented you, but this time it was completely genuine. The mere thought of Sunghoon made you all giddy inside. âUm, yeah, he actually asked me to be his girlfriend last night.â
Your three friends gasped dramatically and Sieun pulled you into a hug, as if youâd just received an award of some kind. Heeseung and Jiung patted your shoulders, congratulating you.
âSumin? Did you know about this?â Sieun enquired, turning to your friend.
âWhat? Oh, yeah, Y/N called me last night,â she answered, briefly looking at you before turning back to her phone. Sieun looked at you, surprised, not understanding Suminâs reaction to what seemed like happy news.
You had indeed called Sumin the previous night, and the call had gone similarly to the way she was behaving this morning. Although you usually told her everything, this time, you didnât want to share the fact that you and Sunghoon were only fake dating. You found yourself actually wanting it to be true - and you thought itâd be easier to believe it yourself if everyone, including your best friend, did too.
âMinie! Iâve got some news,â youâd said as soon as she picked out.
âOoh! Hit me,â sheâd replied with as much excitement in her voice as you.
âSoâŠâ youâd started, already giggling. âSunghoonâs just asked me out. I havenât told anyone else, I wanted you to be the first to know.â
There was silence on the other end of the line. After a while, you added, âMinie, you still there?â
âHuh? Yeah, um, thatâs nice, Y/N, Iâm happy for you,â she said, not sounding happy at all. There was no trace of excitement left in her voice.
âYeah, thanks,â you replied, voice ten times smaller than a minute ago.
âIâm sorry Y/N, but Iâve got to go, my parents are calling me. Iâll see you tomorrow.â She hung up suddenly, giving you no time to say bye in return. You were completely confused. Was Sumin bothered by you and Sunghoon dating? Other than a reminder about his past behavior, she hadnât said anything when you two were getting closer. So what was wrong? Youâd hoped youâd find out the next day at school, but the way she was acting didnât help at all.
You snapped out of your flashback when Heeseung nudged you, faking a pout. âNot fair! Why did she get to know before we did?â
You forced a smile and said youâd known youâd see them the next day and thought it was better to tell them in person, and that you had just wanted to rant to someone quickly. Your teacher came in as the bell rang and everyone went to their seat. During class, you tried getting her attention so you could ask her if she was okay but she kept her attention on the teacher the whole time.Â
After that, as time went by, you kept up your charade of being the perfect student as usual, adding to that of being the perfect girlfriend to Sunghoon. Time with him passed by so quickly: you hadnât realized you were more than halfway through the semester until you needed to wear a thicker jacket outside and the leaves had started falling, covering school grounds in shades of brown. The plan had worked: he was finally left alone by his admirers. Sumin had stopped being weird after a few days, saying she had had some problems with her parents but hadnât gone into more detail. Everything was as great as it had ever been: good grades, good friends and a good boyfriend. Well, fake boyfriend, which you needed to remind yourself a bit too often, on the days Sunghoon didnât do it himself. You felt a pinch in your heart every time he said something like, âthereâs my fake girlfriend!â when it was just the two of you, or âgreat job today, Y/Nâ after dropping you off.
One day as you arrived home, Yeeun was waiting outside your house, trying to catch you red-handed. She dragged him inside by the arm and you panicked, not wanting him to see how you lived. But your messy room and invasive siblings didnât scare him off at all; on the contrary, he smiled one of the biggest smiles youâd ever seen on him, canines and dimples on display. Your mom made him stay over for dinner and it was probably the happiest dinner youâd ever had. The idea of bringing someone home and having them see your habits and odd family dynamics had terrified you for the longest time, but you felt so comfortable around Sunghoon that it felt as if he was part of your home as soon as heâd stepped foot inside. You didnât feel the need to hide anything from him.
After dinner, he helped your parents clear up the table and even washed the dishes, even though they kept insisting he didnât have to do anything. He had completely won them over. They sat at the table and watched you two laugh together in the kitchen. They looked at each other, knowing they were thinking the exact same thing: their daughter hadnât looked this happy in a while.
When you were done cleaning up, you two headed to your room under the pretense of needing to study.Â
âAlright, but keep the door open!â your mom had yelled after you, making you groan and Sunghoonâs face turn crimson red.
You really had planned on studying - there was a big test coming up and you couldnât afford to get a bad grade. When you got your physics textbook out, Sunghoon groaned in protest.
âWhat? You seriously want to study right now?â
You sighed. âI donât necessarily want to, no, but I need to. And so do you, may I add.â
âWeâre not even in the same physics class!â
âYeah, but we both have Mr. Cho, so I know youâre gonna have a test as well.â
He rolled his eyes and dramatically flung himself on your bed. âFine.â
When he didnât move for a few minutes, you guessed what he had meant was that heâd let you study but wasnât going to do it himself. But after ten minutes, he suddenly got up. âIâm bored to death, Y/N. The test isnât in another week. Show me what you do for fun,â he said, on the verge of desperation. It had only been ten minutes, but you felt bad having him over and not entertaining him.
âWell, I do have a SwitchâŠâ Sunghoonâs eyes widened in awe. âI guess we can play Mario Kart.â
He almost squealed in joy at that. You just chuckled at him, not knowing he was such a fan of car video games.Â
âIâm gonna crush you, Kim. Get ready,â he said, already looking victorious.
You smirked, not wanting him to get his hopes up. âOh, itâs on, Park.â
As expected of a pro player like you (on non-schooldays, you could stay up all night playing this game), you won every single round. Sure, he gave you a run for your money, but you always came on top. He took it surprisingly well, congratulating you each time. After your fourth win in a row, you wiggled your face in front of his with a devilish smile, as you couldnât help but torment him a little. But he wasnât smiling. At first, youâd thought he was finally getting mad he kept on losing; but then the proximity between you two hit you. You noticed his eyes flicker momentarily to your lips and had backed off immediately.
âUm, if we go for another round, Iâll go easy on-â
He cut you off by putting his hand on your cheek, making you turn to look at him. Youâd daydreamed about this moment before, but you hadnât imagined your heart beating this fast or the butterflies eating away at your stomach. He was now fully staring at your lips, and you couldnât look at anything else but his either. Too scared to move an inch, you felt him get closer and closer, so close that his lips were almost on-
âY/N, mom says itâs late and Sunghoon needs to- AH!â
Sunoo had walked in, eyes riveted on his phone until he looked up and saw you and Sunghoon suspiciously close to each other. Sunghoon practically leaped off of your bed in surprise and you flung a pillow over your face, not believing you had almost kissed Park Sunghoon but that your stupid little brother had ruined everything.
âSorry! Iâm sorry!â the culprit squeaked before running away. You and Sunghoon looked at each other. It was awkward for two seconds, then you both erupted in laughter.Â
âAlright, guess I should get going then. Um, thank you so much for tonight. I havenât had a family dinner in a while, and⊠Well, it was really nice,â he admitted shyly after youâd calmed down.
âOf course, Sunghoon. Iâm sure my parents would love to have you over any time.â
You walked him to your front door, where you exchanged goodbyes and Iâll see you tomorrows. You watched him take a few steps, then turn back and jog towards you. He stood in front of you for a second, then leaned down and placed a kiss on your forehead.
âBye, Y/N.â
You were too stunned to say it back.
â
After the almost-kiss, it felt as though something had changed between you and Sunghoon. The event had somewhat revealed your feelings: you both knew you wanted to kiss each other. But since those feelings hadnât been acted upon, the transition from fake-dating to real dating couldnât happen as smoothly. Well, it could, if you two stopped acting like idiots and told each other how you felt. But the author wanted to get a couple more thousand words in, so it had to wait.
Youâd gotten used to Sunghoonâs little requests at school, but you definitely hadnât anticipated a phone call at past 11pm on a Wednesday night.Â
âSunghoon? Why are you calling me so late?â you asked, groggy voice because of sleep. Since you woke up so early to get ready in the morning, you always went to bed around 9:30 to 10 p.m. Sunghoon was making you lose precious minutes of slumber.
âLate? Itâs barely midnight, Y/N.â You groaned. âWhatever, put on some clothes and come outside! Iâm waiting for you.â
âYouâre what?â you whisper-screamed, suddenly feeling very awake.
âIâm waiting for you! Hurry up!âÂ
As always, he hung up without waiting for your reply. You couldnât really turn him down anyway; although you were somewhat obligated, you had stopped seeing it that way and started doing things for him out of your own volition.Â
Not wanting to get out of your pajamas, you just threw on a warm sweater, a scarf, some socks, and headed down the hallway on your tiptoes. Your parents werenât the strictest out there, but you still didnât wanna get caught sneaking out, and with a boy, at that. After putting on your shoes, you left your house, closing the door behind you as quietly as you could.
The late October night was a bit chilly, but you had wrapped up warm enough. Sunghoon was indeed waiting for you outside, wearing a denim jacket over his gray sweatshirt and matching sweatpants.Â
God, he looked good.
âFinally! Took you long enough.â
âQuit it, Sunghoon. Just tell me why you wanted to see me.â
âThereâs a place I wanna show you. Come on,â he said, taking you by the hand. You felt tingles in your palm and fingers wherever his hand touched yours. How could something feel so natural yet make your heart race so at the same time?
âAre we walking there?â you asked.
âYep, itâs not too far. Weâll be there in five minutes.â
Those five minutes felt like five seconds walking with Sunghoon. You chatted and joked around the whole way, not letting go of each otherâs hand. You hadnât even noticed you had reached your destination until he stopped walking.
âHere we are,â he said, facing the building, which made you turn in the direction he was looking.
âThe ice rink? What are we doing here?â you asked, confused. It was 11:30 pm; surely, the rink would be closed.
âYouâll see!â he said, heading towards the entrance. To your surprise, he pulled out a key from his pockets and opened the doors.
âWhat? Sunghoon! How do you have a key to the ice rink?â
âIâm chummy with the janitor. I just need to let him know when Iâll be coming and he doesnât tell anyone,â he replied, an easy smile on his face, as if this was the most normal thing in the world. He led you first to the shoe rack, helping you find skates your size, and then to the benches next to the rinkâs entrance. He knelt in front of you and helped you put on your shoes, doing the laces for you.Â
He looked up at you, a glint in his eyes. âIâve never taken anyone here, Y/N. I know your secret, so I thought Iâd show you mine.â
You didnât know what to say, surprised at the sudden confession, so you just looked at him curiously as he took ice skates from his backpack and laced them up.
He stood up, turned to you and said, âReady?â
You followed him to the doors leading to the ice. He stepped inside without a trace of hesitation, but you were much more doubtful about your ability to stand on the ice without falling instantly. He turned around and saw you looking helpless. He took your hand in his, helping you step onto the rink.Â
âDonât worry, Y/N. As long as Iâve got you, you wonât fall.â
âDonât let go of my hand, then,â you said pointedly.
Too focused on not slipping, you didnât see his smile. âI wasnât planning to.â
He helped you get your footing, skating backwards in front of you and holding both of your hands. After a few minutes on the ice, you got brave enough to skate on your own, and you miraculously managed to stay on your feet. However, after a while, your bravery turned to hubris, and you dared attempt a spin, resulting in you miserably falling on the ice, butt first. Sunghoon was worried for a second until he saw you laughing uncontrollably. You looked at him, wide-eyed, and said, âThis is so much fun, Hoon.â You were so exhilarated that you hadnât noticed the nickname slipping from your lips but the boyâs cheeks and ears turned redder than the bruise you had surely just earned yourself. Thankfully, if you commented on it, he could just blame it on the cold.Â
He helped you up, and you skated on as if nothing had happened. This went on for another thirty minutes, you skating hand in hand and occasionally falling together (but most of the time, just you falling on your own). Sunghoon had been so nervous before bringing you here; he was scared youâd think his hobby was unmanly or lame, as heâd been made to feel. But seeing you have the time of your life, all his worries dissipated. This place was like a second home to him, and bringing someone into your home was always nerve-wracking, but he thought you fit perfectly in it.Â
When you told him you were getting tired and wanted to sit for a while, you skated back together to the benches and he gave you some water from his bag. You sat in silence for a while, waiting for your breathing to come back to a normal pace.Â
You broke the silence first. âSo, whyâd you take me here? Not that Iâm complaining.â
He hesitated a second before speaking. "I used to come here all the time as a kid.â He didnât look at you when he answered, keeping his gaze on his hands. âMy mom would take me. She left us for another man the summer before middle school started. She left me alone with my asshole father.â
You let out a small gasp, not expecting such a confession. You placed your hand on his back for comfort and said, âIâm sorry, Sunghoon.â
He quickly glanced at you, a half-smile on his face. âDonât be. Anyways, he had to somewhat start taking care of me now that my mom wasnât there to do it.â He chuckled darkly. âI guess his idea of taking care of his son was forbidding him from doing the one thing he loved. He thought it was a stupid sport for a boy. He stopped all of my lessons and made me sign up for soccer, even though I hadnât ever said I wanted to do that. I still came here from time to time, but I didnât wanna risk getting caught. God knows what heâd have done if he saw me here.â
You werenât sure what to say. You felt as if no words would be enough to express how his story made you feel. âI- itâs awful, what he did to you. No parent should ever make their child feel as though their passion isnât worth it. If itâs any comfort, even though you were mostly helping me, I thought you looked ten times better on that rink than scoring any goal. And thatâs saying something.â
He finally looked at you and grinned. âThanks, Y/N.â He seemed to be thinking for a few seconds, and then continued: âIâve had a lot of time to think about it, and I think thatâs why itâs hard for me to open up to people and make lots of friends. I only trust Jake because Iâve known him forever and I canât really get rid of him now,â he said with a chuckle, âand Jay, well, Jake took to him instantly in middle school so I guess I didnât have a choice there either, and heâs not so bad anyway. The more people I let in, the more likely I am to get hurt. Itâs much easier pretending I donât wanna have anything to do with anyone than try.Â
âI guess itâs also why I talked to you on that day. Sure, I ended up thinking you could help me with all those girls. But at first, when I saw someone like you, who looks like they have it all together, whoâs actually the opposite in real life - no offense - it reminded me of myself. And I thought, maybe sheâd understand. Which is why it was so easy to be myself around you.â
You took his hand in yours and pressed it slightly. âIâm glad you were.â You didnât feel the need to say anything else, hoping it was enough.
âNow, your turn. What made you the person you are today?â he asked with a grin, trying to approach lightheartedly this heavy subject, which you appreciated.
âItâs all about making people think youâre someone else, isnât it? Because, depending on who you are, theyâll treat you differently. I found that out as a kid, because I, too, have a tragic childhood backstory.â He gasped jokingly.
âItâs not as bad as yours, so sorry about that. Back in primary school, I already had this⊠attitude that I have today. I had quite the ego, and I didnât want anyone doing better than me at school. I didnât care about how I looked, if I was the prettiest girl in class or had the cutest shoes. I was the smarty-pants of the class, basically, and a lot of the kids teased me for that. But I also didnât let myself get trampled over, and fought back, quite aggressively at that, so I was somehow the nerd and the troublemaker at the same time. I didnât have the best reputation, but I did have a friend. Jay. Or Jongseong, at the time, before he got too cool for his real name,â you joked. âThe thing is, I didnât see him as a friend. Sure, I was only eight or nine, but I really liked him. And the day I was planning on confessing, I saw him hold hands with the prettiest girl in our class. So I never told him, and then he left for the US a few months later.
âDuring the time he was gone, I had a complete makeover and actually started caring about my appearance, especially when middle school started. So now I had academic validation from teachers, which I had craved since forever, and both female and male validation from all the girls telling me how pretty I was and all the guys liking me. The people who were in my primary school and went to the same middle school told them how I used to be, but nobody believed them, and if they did, they didnât care, so everybody just gradually forgot about it. And I just got addicted to the validation, which is why I always studied harder and tried to be prettier, even when it turned into a complete lie. I thought that if I could make everyone believe I was perfect, then it didnât matter what I was like in real life, so at home, I just let myself completely go. And even now that Iâm aware of all of this, I still canât stop.â
Sunghoon looked at you like you had just slapped him. âSo, you used to have a crush on Jay?â
You looked at him in exasperation. âSeriously, Hoon? Thatâs what you get from everything I just told you?â
He smiled shyly. âSorry. Thank you for telling me.â You sat there in comfortable silence for another few minutes, still hand in hand. Then, Sunghoon got up, grin on his face.
âWanna see something cool?â You nodded at him, returning his grin. He headed back inside the rink.
You thought he was gonna show off by doing some fancy trick. But he started gliding on the ice, and you couldnât believe what you were seeing. He took long strides that looked as natural to him as walking. He spinned one, two, three times, and continued skating as though it was nothing. You were completely mesmerized. You already thought he was out-of-this-world beautiful, but his beauty was brought to another level when he skated. His elegant moves rendered you breathless. When he skated back towards you, you were looking at him with only awe and admiration in your eyes.Â
After what heâd told you and what heâd just shown you, you couldn't help but get a little emotional. You engulfed him in a hug as soon as heâd stepped out of the rink, your arms around his neck and his naturally coming to your waist. Your hands came up to his cheeks as you leaned back to properly look at him.
âThat was- wow. That was amazing, Sunghoon. Thank you for showing me.â You could see the gratefulness in his eyes. There was something else there, and whatever it was, you knew you were looking back at him with as much of it. It was only you two in the building, but it might as well have been the two of you in the whole world.Â
All too similarly as in your room, his gaze went from your eyes to your lips, and you couldnât help but mirror that. This was the perfect moment. You inched your face closer, letting him close the gap between you. Your lips touched and it was as if everything fell into place. The kiss was shy at first, neither of you sure what to do, your mouths moving at a slow but steady pace. But as your hands traveled from his cheeks, to his jaw and down to his neck, and you felt him sigh in the kiss, something unclicked in you, making you want more. You deepened the kiss, and he returned it with just as much force. Your right hand came to grab at the nape of his hair and his hands gripped your waist tighter. After minutes or hours, you broke the kiss in need of some air. Your eyes met again and you smiled at him, relieved it had finally happened.Â
You thought heâd have a similar reaction, but he suddenly looked panicked. Realization hit him like a truck. He liked you. Far too much. And even if the kiss and these past weeks told him you might like him back, it scared him. Heâd unlocked his heart for you but couldnât let you keep the key. Otherwise, heâd let you open it more and more and more until there he was completely bare in front of you, and you decided you didnât like what youâd found and left him. Just like his mom did. Just like everyone eventually does. Just like his dad never even tried.
He took a step back. His panic was rubbing off on you. You called out his name, but he quickly got his bag and said, âSorry, Y/N, I have to go. Iâll um- Iâll see you.â He took a few steps, turned around, and said, âI think you should take the bus tomorrow morning. Sorry.â
He started walking away. A few steps before heâd be out of your view, he turned back around. He hated the look on your face, how sad, confused and helpless it was all at once. Above all, he hated that he was the reason behind it. But he told himself it was better to leave you now than be left in a few months when you got bored of him, and started walking again without another word.
â
You walked home alone. It was a dark November night, and you were shivering from the cold and from sadness. Try as hard as you might, you couldnât figure out why Sunghoon had reacted like that. The past month had gone so well, you were only getting closer and more comfortable with each other. The only logical conclusion you could come to was that kissing you had made him realize he didnât like you. Thankfully, you didnât live too far from the ice rink and you got home in five minutes. Lost in your thoughts, you couldnât even be bothered to be quiet closing the front door and walking to your room, and you woke Sunoo up.
At first, he looked like he was about to scold you for making so much noise; but upon seeing your disheveled state, he started worrying.Â
âY/N? Whatâs wrong, why are you only coming home now? Where were you?â
You couldnât hold it in any longer. You fell in your brotherâs arms and started crying your heart out.
He held you for a little while, but not wanting to wake the others up by staying in the hallway, he said, âCome on, letâs get you in your room. Youâre freezing.â
He left for a few minutes and came back with two cups of tea in his hands. He joined you on your bed. You had calmed down a bit and took a sip of the tea, already feeling warmer.
âSo, tell me everything.â
And you did. Not just about what had happened at the ice rink, but everything before that: how yours and Sunghoonâs relationship was fake, which you hadnât even told your siblings, but that it hadnât kept you from falling for him, and how you really thought he felt the same way. When you got to the part where you told each other about your stories, Sunoo grabbed your arm in surprise, and said, âI canât believe you told someone about that. Good for you, big sis.â
You sat in silence after a few minutes when youâd finished telling him everything, you, still reflecting on your evening, and him, trying to think of something good to say. He took a deep breath, and started: âYou know, this might be completely useless, but I feel like thereâs no point trying to figure out why he did that. Weâre not mind readers, and assuming things will just go wrong. I think the best thing to do is just ask him tomorrow, or whenever youâre ready to face him, really.â
You looked at your brother fondly. âHow can you be so stupid sometimes, yet so wise right now?â
Sunoo and you talked for another minute, but when you yawned for a good seven straight seconds, you both agreed it was time for bed. Before you fell asleep, you told yourself that tomorrow morning, youâd find Sunghoon and make him be clear with you. You at least deserved that.
â
Heeseung and Sumin were clearly surprised to see you the next morning in the bus, but you told them you didnât want to talk about it and they didnât push, although it very obviously had something to do with Sunghoon. As you rode the bus and psyched yourself for your conversation with him, you had no idea he was currently in the midst of a heated argument with Jay. The latter pushed him with force, making Sunghoonâs back hit the classroom wall behind him.
âWhat the fuck did you just say about Y/N?â Jay asked, venom in his voice and fury in his eyes.
Despite the pain, Sunghoon smirked, wanting to rile up his friend even more. âI said, Y/Nâs just as stupid as all the other girls. She probably thinks sheâs so much better than everybody, but in the end it was so easy making her fall for me. It was almost boring, really, how easy she was.â
Jay pushed him again. âDonât fucking talk about her like that.â
âAw, little Jay is getting upset over his little Y/N? You sad that the girl you like actually likes an asshole like me?â
Jay hadnât had many reasons to get angry in his life. This was making him discover another side of himself; he didnât know he could get this angry. He didnât know rage could fill up his veins like that and make him want to destroy absolutely everything around him, but above all, the person in front of him whoâd he considered a friend all these years. On the verge of losing control, he reared up his fist, before Sunghoon said:
âYou know whatâs even sadder? She used to like you, too.â
His arm dropped. âWhat?â
âYeah, in primary school. Didnât you think it was weird how different she was before and after you left? Her little heartbreak made her change everything about herself just so that people would like her. And now all she can do is lie to everyone. I pity her, really. And to think that she thought I liked her. What an idiot.â
That was the last straw. Jay punched Sunghoon square in the nose, making him stumble back a few steps until he hit the wall again. He held onto his bloody, and possibly broken, nose and looked Jay straight in the eyes, still smirking. Thinking his job was done (but not sure what the job was in the first place), he walked away, heading to the nursesâ station. The scene had gathered quite an audience outside. It was less than ten minutes to the first bell, so already quite a few students were there, but no one had dared to venture inside. Jake, arriving too late to prevent any damage, looked wide-eyed back and forth between Sunghoon walking out and Jay standing inside, fists clenched by his side and panting from anger.
Sunghoon barely spared him or anyone a glance as he left the room. What he did notice though, were a crumpled tuna-mayo sandwich and a banana milk on the floor, looking as though someone had dropped them.
What had he done?
â
You had already run back to your friends and were currently crying for the second time in twelve hours in Suminâs arms. It was the first time ever you cried at school, and probably also in front of your friends, spare Sumin, so it was a curious sight to most; she took you to another room for privacy.Â
There, you practically told her everything you had told Sunoo the night before, including the fake dating.
âWait⊠so, you and Sunghoon werenât actually dating?â
You nodded, embarrassed by your lie.
âI- Why didnât you tell me, Y/N? How could you fool everyone like that?â
You looked up in surprise at your friendâs harsh words. You probably deserved them, but you werenât used to hearing her speak in such a way, nor to the cold stare she was peering down at you with.Â
âI donât know⊠Iâm really sorryâŠâ you mumbled, ashamed.
She scoffed. âYou should be. I just- I just donât understand how you can already be living such a lie, and still add onto it. It makes me wonder how Iâm still friends with you.â The bell rang right at that moment, and she got up, saying, âLetâs go to class. You wouldnât wanna be late.â
You followed her, but you felt sick to your stomach. Usually, you could always hide your discomfort or sadness, no matter how bad your period cramps were or how serious an argument with your parents had gotten. But this time, it was too much, and fifteen minutes into the class, you asked the teacher to go to the nurse. Not used to you needing to leave class and trusting that it was for a legitimate reason, your teacher let you off and you quickly packed your bag and left.Â
When you got to the nurse, you sat down in front of her and said you werenât feeling well and wanted to go home. For the same reasons as your teacher, she said sheâd let you but needed to ask you a few questions before about your general well-being. You answered them quickly, wanting to get this over with as soon as possible and just go home.Â
When you finally were able to leave, you only took a few steps out of the nurseâs office before someone grabbed your wrist, making you turn around. Sunghoon, who was resting in the room next door, had heard your voice and gotten up as soon as heâd heard you leave. His nose was covered in bandages and his eye had started swelling and turning blue, and you mentally thanked Jay. You ripped your arm out of his grip and continued to walk away without a word. You were too tired to argue.
âY/N, please, hear me out.â
This made you stop in your tracks, but you didnât turn around. âHear you out? Iâve already heard enough, Sunghoon. No need to explain, you made it very clear what you think of me.â
You started walking again but he doubled you and blocked your path in the narrow hallway.Â
âY/N, Iâm sorry, if youâd just give me a minute-â
âI donât care that youâre sorry, Sunghoon! Sorry doesnât cut it. I trusted you. Actually trusted you. You out of all people should know how hard it is to do that. Or was that a lie too?â Seeing him in front of you, your sadness retreated to the back of your heart and you were left with only anger.Â
âIt wasnât, I prom-â
âThat doesnât mean anything to me anymore.â You pushed past him and walked on. And this time, he let you go, even though the only thing you wanted him to do was make you stay. You so desperately wanted to hear him out and forgive him, but you knew you couldnât do that. You had too much dignity, and it would only end up hurting you even further.Â
So you didnât shed a tear the whole way home. When you finally got to your bed, you didnât have the energy to start crying. You fell asleep, tears quietly rolling down your face.Â
â
You slept the whole day, waking up to a soft knock on your bedroom door. It was your mom, telling you Jay was here to see you. Everyone had been surprised to see you already at home when they came back from work or school, but they knew better than to wake you up.
âIâm surprised, you know. Heâs gotten so handsome.â
You rolled your eyes at her. âJust tell him that Iâm not feeling well and he should go home, please.â
âOh, Iâve already tried to, honey. The boy is adamant on seeing you.â
You sighed. âFine. Can you bring him here, then?â
A few seconds later, you heard another knock, and Jay opened the door just enough to peek his head through, asking if he could come in.
âWell, youâre already here, so might as well.â
You sat up and gestured for him to sit down on your bed.
He looked around, taking in the messiness of his surroundings. âYou know, I thought your room would be much more⊠organized.â
âDidnât Sunghoon tell you? Iâm a big, fat liar who hides the truth from everyone,â you said sarcastically.
âAbout that⊠did you hear everything he said?â You hummed in response. âIâm so sorry you had to hear that, Y/N. I donât know what happened to him. Heâd never said anything like that about you, and then, all of a sudden⊠What an asshole. I canât believe he was my friend.â
âWas? You shouldnât end your friendship over me, Jay.â
âAre you kidding me? I canât be friends with a guy who talks about anyone like that, let alone you.â After a few minutes of silence, he asked, âDid um- did anything happen, for him to say those things?â
You sighed deeply. âIâve already told this story twice in the past few days, so Iâll give you the short version, but basically, we were fake dating, and I started really liking him, and I thought he did too, until we kissed, and he left me completely stranded, and then the next day I hear him say all those things.â
Silence again. You suddenly remembered something Sunghoon had said that you had completely put to the side: Jay likes you. At least, according to Sunghoon. You didnât know if it was true, but judging by his disappointed face, it looked like it. Seemed like all of your friendships were going to hell.
âOh,â he simply said.
âYeahâŠâ you murmured back.Â
âWell,â he turned to you, âthat just confirms to me that heâs an asshole. Cause no guy in his right mind would turn you down, Y/N. I know I wouldnât.â
He looked straight at you as he said that. Yep. Jay liked you. It was a nice feeling, but it was also about ten years too late.Â
âDo you- do you know what Iâm trying to say, Y/N?â he asked, gulping.
You hesitated for a second before saying, âI think I do, Jay. I have to say, your timing isnât great.â
He chuckled a bit lifelessly. âYeah, I guess right now isnât the best time to say this.â
âI also meant, you know what Sunghoon said, earlier? That I liked you before you left for the US? That was true.â
He looked at you, mouth agape. âOh, was itâŠâ His head hung down in defeat. âI canât believe Iâve been such an idiot. I feel like itâs my fault that Sunghoon hurt you like this. If only Iâd been just a bit earlierâŠâ
âNone of this is your fault, Jay. Please donât think that. Itâs mine for thinking Sunghoon could actually like me back.â
Jay took a deep breath. âGod, as much as it hurts me to say, Y/N, I think he did. Or does, actually.â You furrowed your brows at him. âSunghoon, he has this thing where he goes into retreat mode as soon as he gets too close, too personal. Itâs a stupid defense mechanism, and when he realizes heâs let you in a bit too far, he snaps everything closed and hurts you before you can hurt him. At least, thatâs how he sees it, I guess. Heâs done it to Jake and me a couple times, and it takes some getting used to, but he stops after a while. When he knows for sure that you wonât hurt him.â
You didnât know what to do with this information, so you just stayed quiet, which Jay took as a sign to go on.
âIâm not saying forgive him. Believe me, if I could smack him into space and never let him see you again, I would. But I think maybe, just maybe, and you donât have to if you donât want to, hear him out.â
You smiled at him. âYouâre a good friend, Jay. And I donât mean just to me but to Sunghoon as well. I hope you know that.â
Jay tried to ignore the pinch in his heart at the word âfriendâ and smiled back.
âOh, thereâs another thing I needed to show you.â His tone was suddenly much more apprehensive, and he looked both sorry and scared to say whatever he was about to say.
He pulled out his phone and searched the thing in question. Before showing you anything, he warned, âNobody knows who did this. It was sent out to the whole school on a library computer-â
Expecting the worst, you snatched Jayâs phone from his hands. And there they were. Pictures of you from your primary school years, recent pictures of you in your comfortable clothes, at home or in close proximity to your house. Sent out to the whole school, as Jay had said. You were horror-struck. You could feel all the years you had spent perfecting your image and maintaining it crumbling around you as though they were paper. Charismatic smiles and trendy accessories had been your brick and mortar, but a sledgehammer had hit them, destroying your foundations further with each swing.
And that sledgehammer had a name: Bae Sumin. Youâd figured it out in an instant. Youâd been friends your whole life, she was the only one apart from your family to know about your true face; only she would have access to such photos. You knew it wasnât Sunghoon because the pictures he had taken that day werenât there.
If what had happened with Sunghoon had made a crack in your heart, then this had shattered it into a million pieces. The person who youâd trusted the most, who youâd thought would never do anything to hurt you, had done the worst thing anybody could do to you.
âY/N- are you okay?â Jay asked tentatively. You had forgotten he was there.
âUm, yeah, yeah- I think I just need to be alone for now, if thatâs okay.â
âAre you sure? I donât mind staying a while.â
âSorry, Jay, but Iâm sure.â
He looked at you for a few seconds. Heâd never felt more distance between you two, not even when you had been oceans apart. âAlright. Call me if you need anything. I mean it.â
You smiled a tiny, tiny smile in response and he left your room. On his way out, your mom hugged him, saying it was nice to see him again and that he was welcome anytime, and he thanked her.
As he walked home, he couldnât help but bitterly laugh to himself. Even when he confessed, he hadnât been able to say the words heâd wanted to tell you this whole time: I love you.
â
You didnât go to school for the rest of the week, the only stain on your perfect attendance record. All of your friends had tried to reach you, asking if you were okay, and you replied in a few small messages, telling them youâd be back when you could. Other people had contacted you, asking if those pictures were real. You obsessed over your schoolâs gossip Instagram account: the past few days, all the posts had been dedicated to your pictures and Sunghoonâs and Jayâs fight. You had ten missed calls from Sunghoon and seventeen from Sumin. You ignored each and everyone of them, only giving Jay, Heeseung, Sieun and Jiung the time of day.Â
On Sunday morning you woke up, already dreading going to school the next day. You could already picture the nasty stares and whispers youâd get in the hallways. You thought about facing Sumin and Sunghoon again, and you thought the worst thing possible would be to have to do it at school. So you decided to wait until they called you again, as you knew they would, and finally picked up their call.
Sumin contacted you first, at eleven in the morning. You agreed to have her come over to your house to talk. When she appeared at your front door, you realized you werenât sad, angry, or disappointed; you were just confused. You didnât understand why sheâd done it. Looking at her face, you couldnât imagine her sitting down at that computer and sending out those pictures, writing the comment This is what Kim Y/N is like in real life.
You let her in and walked to your room, your siblingsâ eyes burning holes into her soul the whole time. You sat down on your bed, sighed, and said, âGo ahead.â
âThank you for letting me come here and explain myself. I donât know what took over me, Y/N. Well actually, I guess I do. Jealousy, as stupid as it sounds.â She chuckled at herself. âIâve always tried to hide it, but Iâve always been a bit jealous of you, Y/N. Youâre the prettiest girl, the smartest, the nicest, and Iâm just the best friend. Thatâs all anyone knows me as. Everybody loves you, yet I know itâs all a facade. And Iâm not saying that to be mean, because I know youâre an amazing person even without all the glamor. And when I saw you with Sunghoon, I mean, you saw how I was. I didn't fight with my parents. I was so, so jealous. You hadnât shown interest in any guy since Choi Soobin and all of a sudden you were dating Park freaking Sunghoon, and he knew about your quote-on-quote ârealâ face, so I couldnât even comfort myself that he didnât know who you really were.â
âWait- why would you be jealous of Sunghoon and me?â
She took a deep breath. âYou remember, freshman year, when I confessed to him and he turned me down?â
âYeah, but I thought that was in the past.â
âDo you also remember that guy I told you about later on, who Iâd gotten really close with but completely shut me off when I thought we were about to start dating?â
Something clicked, but you didnât want to face it. âYeahâŠâ
âWell, surprise surprise, they were the same person. Ha. I got mad at you for lying to me, but I did the same thing.â
âSumin⊠Why did you never tell me?â
âIâm not sure. When we were in that talking stage, I couldâve bragged about it to anyone, you know, that Park Sunghoon was actually being nice to me, but I didnât. I wanted to keep him my little secret. And then I confessed, and we all know how that ended.â A beat passes as she takes a deep breath, shaking the bad memory away. âI am over it, it was more than three years ago. Maybe there was a nice part of me that thought he had changed, because you seemed happy with him, and I didnât want to ruin that. But maybe there was another part that hoped he might hurt you like he did me. And thatâs such a shitty thing to do, I know. I shouldâve told you when I saw you get involved with him. I canât believe after all these years, he did the exact same thing to you that he did to me. What an asshole.â
You were staring at the wall in front of you, feeling empty. Why did everything have to happen at the same time? You were just drained of any willpower.
âThis doesnât explain the pictures,â you said plainly.
âRight. When you told me you were fake dating, I guess something snapped in me. I couldnât believe it was another lie, I thought we had gone past the stage where you hid things from me. So that, plus jealousy, I just went a bit crazy, I think. I really wasnât thinking, Y/N, and I promise you with all my heart that if I could go back and undo everything, I would. Iâm so, so, so sorry. I regretted it as soon as I hit post.â
You looked at your friend and knew she was telling the truth. You believed her, and yet you couldnât quite look past it.
âI know you are, Minie. Itâs just⊠what am I gonna do now at school? Everybody must hate me.â
âI wonât lie, some people havenât been saying the nicest things, especially Parkâs fangirls. But God, Y/N, and please donât take this the wrong way, but who cares? Theyâll talk about it for a week, two at most. Your life at school wonât be the same, but youâll still have all of us. Iâve talked to Heeseung, Sieun and Jiung, and theyâre not the tiniest bit mad at you. Theyâre just worried to death. A bit confused too, but mostly worried. And you know what? Even Yujin, Wonyoung and Gaeul, who Iâve literally never talked to before, came to ask me how you were. Jay and Sunghoon are barely on talking terms but they always team up when it comes to practically verbally assaulting anyone they overhear talking behind your back. Jake has to hold them back sometimes but he always glares at those people too. You donât wanna see Jake Sim glare, I promise you. Itâs so scary,â she says in a confessional tone, visibly shuddering just at the thought of angel-faced Jake looking angry, and you canât help the small chuckle that escapes your lips.
Her face softens as she places a warm palm over your hand. âWe all love you and care for you so much, so screw literally every single other person in that school. They donât matter.â
There was something refreshing about Suminâs words. The idea that you could live your life without worrying about other people had always been in the back of your head, but you always told yourself you were in too deep to go back. Now that you had been forced to, you understood why you felt so empty: the immense weight of having to keep up a persona, had been lifted off your shoulders. You would only have to carry yourself, and not a second person, which made you feel weightless. Youâd just have to get used to it and come to enjoy that feeling.
You took your friendâs hands in yours. âI want to forgive you, I promise I do. And I will. I just donât know if I can do that right away. Iâll need some getting used to this new life.â
âI completely understand, Y/N.â
âBut that doesnât mean I donât want you around anymore. And you know what, Iâm sure one day Iâll look back at this moment and thank you.â
â
Sumin left a few hours later and you were now waiting for Sunghoon to call you. You waited and waited, until your phone rang with a small ding: he wasnât calling you, but had sent you a message. A very, very long message. You were very tempted to reply with a I ainât reading all that. Iâm happy for u tho. Or sorry that happened, but you thought it might not be the appropriate moment.Â
You opened the message, which had come after thirty unread texts, and started reading, slightly appalled by the lack of paragraphing.
Dear Y/N,Â
Is this how you start a long text? I would much rather be telling you this than writing it, but someone hasnât been picking up my calls. Sorry. I probably shouldnât be giving you much attitude right now. Where do I even start? The ice rink, I guess. Asshole move #1, obviously. Iâm sorry. I shouldnât have left you like that. That kiss was really really good and I really really liked it. Because I really really like you. And I think Iâve known that for a while now, but the kiss confirmed it. And I was happy for a second, but then I panicked. Thereâs no other word for it, I panicked. Iâve never liked someone this much before and I was so scared. I still am. Iâm terrified shitless. But I know that my fear is completely irrational, and that youâre literally the best person on Earth, which is why Iâm writing this. I know itâs clichĂ© to say my mom left me and now I think everybody will. And my first reaction to that is to hurt someone before they can hurt me, which is what I did. But as much as I wanna fight it, itâs always there at the back of my mind. You can even ask Sumin about it. Should I be saying that? I feel like I might as well. I was an asshole to her, and Iâm so angry at myself that I did it again with you. I didnât mean a single word of what I said about you to Jay. Not a single one. Youâre not stupid, youâre the smartest and most amazing girl I know, and I never pretended I liked you, because I never had to. I think I just wanted Jay to punch me, really. I wanted him to run to you and make sure you were okay, because I was too scared to do that myself. But I regret doing that so much. I hope you know that. And bless Jay, heâs a real one. He told me to get my shit together and talk to you. I can tell heâs still mad at me but still wants to make things good between us. I was already trying to call you before he said that, but I probably wouldâve said something stupid that wouldâve made things worse. And I canât afford that, Y/N, I really, really canât. You get me like no one does and being with you is the most liberating thing ever, Iâm never myself more than when Iâm around you. You just bring out the best in me. Well, except for that thing I did. Which I promise Iâll never do again. I am so extremely sorry, and if you wanna hate me for the rest of your life, I completely get it. But I would also be very happy if you didnât. I hope Iâll see you tomorrow at school. I really miss you.
Your Hoon
You wiped away the tears that had formed in your eyes and typed back:
Youâre such an idiot, Park.
Iâll see you tomorrow.
â
The next day, as you imagined, was mostly hell. Youâd decided not to dress up as usual: there was no point trying to look good after this, it would only make you seem more ridiculous. You put less makeup on, not bothering to hide your eye bags, and didnât bling your outfit up with accessories or fancy shoes, opting for your worn-out Converse youâd had since your feet stopped growing. On the bus, where people usually ignored each other, you could already feel the gossip being told about you. You avoided peopleâs gaze like the plague and sat down next to Sumin. You laid your head on her shoulder and sighed.
âI already wanna go home.â
She laughed, âI know. Weâll be with you the whole day, so donât worry.â
You spent the bus ride catching up on what had happened when you were gone (nothing much), and although there was some awkwardness there, it was nice being with your best friend. When Heeseung got on, he practically screamed your name and suffocated you by means of greeting.
âIâm so glad youâre back. You know, I think you look really cute in those pictures. All these people are just jealous they donât look as good as you even when you donât dress up.â
Sumin shot daggers with her eyes at him and he cringed, saying, âSorry, I shouldnât have mentioned that.â
You reassured him, saying that it was fine since it was all you were going to be hearing the next few days. âMight as well get used to it.â
It was somewhat easy to ignore the stares coming your way when you walked into school with Heeseung and Sumin flanked at your sides like bodyguards. When you reached your classroom, Jiung engulfed you in a hug and Sieun was almost crying. How the hell had you gotten such sweet friends?Â
In the hallways, some people tried to get reactions out of you by calling you out, yelling liar! or you canât fool us anymore. You couldnât ignore them as they were very much in your face. When at lunch, a table of girls next to you was very clearly talking about you in the nastiest way possible, you took your tray and were ready to get up and leave, but a very familiar voice stopped you in your tracks.
âYou think itâs funny talking about someone like that?â Sunghoon was practically screaming at the girls. âYou think youâre any better than her? I bet you do the exact same thing but are just glad someone else got called out for it.â You werenât sure if that made you feel much better, but you appreciated the effort.
âAs a matter of fact,â he continued as he pulled out a chair and got up on it, his voice getting louder, âIâve got something I wanna say to everyone.â
Somebody whooped (probably Jake) and you tried to get Sunghoon to come down from the chair, but he just smiled his radiant smile at you and turned to look at the students in the cafeteria.
âAll of you who judge Y/N are hypocrites. You wanna tell me youâre all as perfect at home as you are at school? That you never relax a little bit? Sure, she pushed it a bit far- (hey! you grunted in protest), but nobody shows who they truly are to everyone. We all judge each other in this stupid high school, so Y/N did what she had to do and protected herself. If anything, this should make you respect her even more. And itâs not like she did anything wrong to you. She didnât use her popularity against anyone, so you better not use this against her.â
From the crowded tables in the cafeteria, somebody yelled âNobody cares!â
Somebody, whose voice you thought you recognized as Jungwonâs, joined in: âYeah, what is it about you seniors and thinking the whole school revolves around you? We still like Y/N!â
Sunghoon, taken aback, simply said, âOh. Alright. Well, you better keep it that way then!â and got off his chair.Â
He turned to you, already a pleading look on his face and said âY/N, Iâm so sorry-â
But you cut him off right away. âI know, Sunghoon, I know. I think this proved it.â
âI really wanna make it up to you. So just tell me what you want me to do, and Iâll do it. Buy you a house, move to another country, you name it. Iâll do it.â
You chuckled at him. âYou donât need to go that far.â You looked down, then back at him. âI think I just want to pretend like nothing happened. Like it was all a huge, awful fever dream. Even if I canât forgive and forget right away, I donât think I want you out of my life while I figure it out.â
He let out the biggest sigh youâd ever heard. âMy God, you donât know how happy to hear that, Y/N. Thank you so much.â
âThank you for defending me just now. That was⊠definitely something.â
He smiled down at you. "I did my best. Too bad those sophomores ruined everything.â
You could feel eyes burning into your sides, so you turned your head a bit and noticed that your friends and the table of girls that had just been gossiping were staring at you, some of them teary-eyed. When they saw you notice them, they all turned back to each other and pretended that they were having some other conversation. You and Sunghoon chuckled, and you realized how much you had missed him.
Yes, Sunghoon and Sumin had hurt you, but you were a strong believer of second chances. Even if it was hard at first to stop thinking about Sunghoonâs voice when he had said those things or Suminâs intentions when she posted the pictures, theyâd made it up to you in any way they could and youâd reciprocated that by being completely honest. No more trying to look perfect all the time; you were human and were allowed to have low moments. Your grades even dropped by two points, because youâd started spending more time with your friends than with your textbooks. Youâd spent whole Saturdays at the ice rink with your now real-boyfriend Sunghoon, and had invited the whole crew. Heeseung was surprisingly good at it. You had even caught your little sister Yeeun on a date with the cute Japanese boy sheâd talked about.Â
As promised, Jay came once a week or every two weeks to have dinner with your family; Sunghoon always insisted on being present. The tension between them had turned into friendly competition, and you could tell the two friends were glad to have each other back.Â
Youâd never felt so free. Your relationship with Sunghoon felt like uncharted territory and home at the same time; so daunting and exciting yet so comfortable and relaxing. You kept the PDA at a minimum at school, but when it was just the two of you, your whole body never failed to heat up, even in the cold of the ice rink. He had been nicknamed the ice prince, but he was so, so warm.
In the end, everybody found out. But you had Park Sunghoon by your side, so it was alright.

Iâve been loving your fics so far! And I was wondering if you could write Jamil being poisoned/hit with a love potion and being all over gn!reader and theyâre just kinda like really flustered (turns out the live potion only works on who ever the person already loves) so gn!reader confesses to Jamil once heâs back to normal! Ty!
Aw! Thank you so much! I'm glad you've been enjoying them! I've been having fun writing them lol
Sorry this took a while. Been slowly making my way through the list, but this is my first Jamil ask! I hope it came out okay and that you like it!
Warnings: None. Reader is GN.
"This....is just so weird...." You said as you sat on a cushion in the common area of Scarabia. A pair of arms were wrapped around your waist from behind as Jamil chin rested against your shoulder as he cuddled against your neck gently, causing you to blush.
"Ahahaha! I think it's cute! I've never seen him like this before." Kalim laughed with a grin as he placed his hands on the back of his head.
You didn't get all the details, but one moment you had walked into Scarabia to see your crush, and the next, he was suddenly all over you, showering you with affection.
Needless to say, you almost fainted on the spot at the sudden onslaught of attention from your long-time crush. According to Kalim, he had mentioned something had gone wrong in potions, and Jamil was hit in the face with a puff of dust and magic due to the mini explosion that was triggered by the event. Professor Crewel had mentioned that it would wear off in a couple of hours and to just look after him till it does.
Jamil had acted like nothing was wrong at first, and he seemed like his usual self, so Kalim figured whatever the professor might have been worried about was just a mistake.
That was until you walked into the dorm, and Jamil's personality did a 180! He turned into some kind of love sick puppy who couldn't keep his hands off of you.
"T-This isn't like him at all! I'm sure he is just being this way to me since I was the first one he saw when I came over! This isn't fai-ahhh!" You yelped when you felt Jamil warm lips against the side of your neck as he gave it a small kiss. Turning bright red, you had tried to free yourself, only to have your crush tighten his hold against you. This was torture!!
"Hmmm." Kalim hummed softly in thought as he paid no mind to your struggles. "I don't think that's right. He was with me the whole time and even saw a couple of students on our way back to the dorm, and nothing happened." He explained before pulling out his phone to check something. "We were trying to make a certain potion in class, but because I added the wrong ingredients, it completely changed the contents of the potion."
"So this is your fault?!" You yelled as you pointed at the housewarden who just laughed.
"Yep! I'm sorry!" Kalim grinned as he looked back at his phone.
With a pout, you huffed before looking back at Jamil, who was still happily cuddling against your shoulder. "This...isn't real, though. He wouldn't be like this with me if it wasn't for that potion..."
At hearing your words, Kalim looked up from his phone. He knew about your crush on his best friend, and you two often talked a lot when you were feeling down and frustrated about the situation. If he was being honest, Kalim thought you were perfect for Jamil. He needed someone like you in his life to balance him out. The housewarden paused for a moment as he debated on bringing this up. He really wanted you two to figure things out on your own, but maybe a little push wouldn't hurt, right?
"That's not entirely true." Kalim said as he watched you turn to look at him. "He only started acting this way the moment you showed up. The spell on this potion just amplifies feelings that already existed inside someone." He said with a warm smile.
At his words, your eyes widen. Was that true? If it was, that would mean...
At that moment, your whole face turned red as a puff of smoke appeared above your head as you were suddenly overloaded with this information.
Kalim grinned as he stood up from his spot in front of you. "He should be back to normal in an hour or so. Keep watching over him for me! Thanks, Y/N!" He said before heading off to give you two some alone time..
"Nooo! Don't you dare leave!" You had yelled, but it was too late as Kalim had disappeared somehow. How was he that quick!?
Over the next hour, you had managed to drag Jamil to his room, but he didn't make it easy. Having him being this clingy was killing your heart. As time went on, you noticed how Jamil was starting to get a bit woozy as you managed to get him on his bed in time before he seemed to fall asleep. Good. Maybe this was a sign the potion was exiting his system.
With a sigh, you pulled up a chair to the side of his bed as you waited for Jamil to wake up. At least now you had a moment to gather your thoughts.
If Kalim was correct, then that meant that Jamil felt the same towards you as you did him. Just the thought alone made your heart race! While Jamil did give you some special treatment from time to time, it wasn't really enough for you to figure out his feelings. He was a man who kept his cards close to his chest, after all.
Maybe you could be brave and finally open up to him about your feelings...?
After a moment, Jamil let out a groan as he slowly opened his eyes. Noticing the ceiling of his bedroom, he sighed before placing his hand against his forehead. He had a bit of a headache. What the hell happened? The last thing he could recall was doing potions with Kalim...
"You're awake. How are you feeling?"
At the familiar voice, Jamil's head snapped to the side to see you sitting next to his bed. Why were you here!?
"Y/N?" Jamil called out as he sat up in his bed. "What are you doing here?"
"I was asked to look after you. Do you remember anything?" You asked as you watched Jamil carefully.
At those words, Jamil frowned slightly, not liking how you asked. Why did he feel like something happened that he was missing? He didn't do something embarrassing in front of you, did he!?
Hearing his phone ding the vice housewarden reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. Noticing it was a text from Kalim, he opened it to see a photo attached that made him almost drop his phone...
It was a picture of him with his arms wrapped around Y/N as he was basically cuddling with them from behind.Â
What happened!? Was this real!? Feeling his face heat up, Jamil put his phone down before placing one of his hands over his face in embarrassment.
You, on the other hand, just watched as Jamil checked his phone before turning bright red. As you went to speak, you felt your phone vibrate, and as you pulled it out, you saw a message from Kalim.
"Jamil should be back to normal by now. I believe in you! You got this!" Was the text he had sent. In that moment, you got the feeling Jamil had received something from the housewarden as well.
"Jamil." You had called out as you got your courage together. When you saw him about to speak, you held up your hand to stop him. You were worried if he said anything that you might lose your nerve. "I like you." You had managed to get out.
At your words, Jamil froze up for a second before he suddenly turned his head towards you. His eyes full of surprise.
"I like you, Jamil." You repeated. "I know you have a lot on your shoulders, but it doesn't change that you're an amazing person. You're smart, a great dancer, and an amazing cook! I really love everything about you."
Feeling his cheeks warm up more, Jamil leaned his head back to look up at his ceiling. To think you would be the one to confess first. He really needed to step up his game...
"H-how about you stay over tonight for dinner? I'll make something special. Just for the two of us." He said before he looked back over at you with a grin. "Think of it as my way for saying sorry that you had to confess first."
At the offer, you blinked before you felt like your heart was going to explode. "Y-you really feel the same?" You whispered in surprise.
Jamil turned as he threw his legs over the side of his bed. "For a long time, but I kept finding excuses to not face this feelings. I shouldn't have put you through all of that. That potion mishaps just opened my eyes a bit more." He said as he made a mental note to give Kalim a lecture about being more careful in the future. He normally wasn't this open and honest, but he owed you that much after what he did to you. Maybe it was okay to be selfish for once.
"Come on." Jamil said as he gently poked your forehead before holding out his hand to you. "Let me treat you like royalty today."
You couldn't help but let out a small laugh as you stood up and took Jamil's hand. "Just be your normal self." You said happily as it felt like a weight had been lifted off of you.
To think a small mishap like this would work in your favor? You would have to make sure to thank Kalim later.

comfort cuisine - TEASER
đ starring. Johnny Suh x afab!Reader
đź preview. Youâve never felt a feral need like this before, but itâs not necessarily the primal type of drive. Instead, itâs a feeling of wanting to be close to this man- who youâve been next to for so many years, but unable to touch. Except, heâs touching you now, and you want more.
tw/cw. unprotected sex, breast worship/massaging, big dick Johnny, fingering, pussy stretching prep, 'it's finger licking good,' praise, dirty talk, masturbation, multiple reader orgasms, cumming together, creampie, soft sex, longing, fluff, etc⊠I pet names: (hers) honey.
đč rating.18+ explicit I wc. 10.8k
đ aus. aged up/widower dad!John, best friends to lovers, Chef!John, etcâŠ
âïž mlist + an. I'm so happy that people loved Line Chef Mark in my fic Real Talk, I received so many messages about giving Head Chef John his own love story, and this is what I came up with in the past four months :) it's a little different from what I normally do, but I wanted to continue with that 'slice of life' theme and venture into a plot line I've never tried before with widower/single dad John :)
âSo two line chefs called in, huh?â you prompt, tucking your legs up and making room for the large man on the sofa.
âI expected it from Haechan, but Markâs generally pretty reliable. His girlfriend was on shift today, so I know he wasnât skipping to be with her- Iâm guessing they got pretty messed up last night.â
âTheyâre young,â you point out, accepting a beer from him. âWe used to be young.â
âUsed to be,â Johnny laughs, taking a swig of his drink.Â
Looking at this man- this father, you realize maybe he never really got the chance to be young. At twenty five, he had a six year old, he wasn't running around blacking out and getting hung over, he was working his way up the employment ladder, dreaming about a better future for his daughter.
âYou mentioned Mark has a girlfriend, I think Iâve heard about her a few times now, itâs interesting that she was in and he wasnât.â
âIâm going to be honest, I love Mark, heâs a great kid- but, he can sometimes be peer pressured into things. Haechan has a hold on Mark unlike any Iâve seen, they bring out⊠interesting sides of each other.â
You laugh at the description, and itâs clear thereâs more on Johnnyâs mind, so you wait for him to continue.Â
âItâs nice that Mark is young and in love, I can understand that- but at the same time, I just hope he doesnât make the same mistakes I did. Not that Soonbok is a mistake, of course- I just mean that⊠life is fragile. You think youâre going to be with someone forever, and then youâre reminded of how frail things can be.â
You frown at his words. Even after all of these years, Johnny still holds so much pain about his lost wife. You want to do your best to help Johnny in every aspect of his life, especially emotional, but this is a topic you never know how to approach. Heâs right for grieving, his ex was his first love, his true love- how is there anything you could ever say to make him feel better about her passing?
You open your mouth, only to close it, and Johnny watches you intently. Sometimes he looks at you, the way heâs looking at you right now, and you wonder if he feels the same level of connection with you that you feel with him. You wonder if he wants you to kiss him, if a kiss would make him feel better, if it would - if even for a moment - help him forget about the pains heâs faced in his life.
But itâs because of the pains heâs faced that neither of you can close the distance, youâd like to think about it that way at least. Even after all these years, itâs still too early, so you simply reach out and gently squeeze his hand.
Johnny offers you a smile, and youâre glad that in some small way, maybe youâve helped him.

Hi, I hope you're having a decent day! I'm sorry if this is an invasive set of questions - feel free not to answer - but do you still actively like DSaF as your own creation, or is it more of a "it was fun while it lasted but i outgrew it and it's for the best to leave it behind" kind of project? Do you ever regret making the games? If you knew they would get so popular, is there anything you would have changed about them? Is there anywhere I could read more of your writing.
It fluctuates a bit. These last couple of years, I've really just been sorta nostalgic for it. I've seen a lot of people discuss those games being a source of comfort during bad times in their lives, people talking about how much the characters mean to them and it's hard not to smile when you see that.
It's a funny thing for close friends of yours to see people WITH fanmade DSaF merch out in the wild, or to watch a random youtube video and being hit with a DSaF reference outta nowhere. It happens from time to time, even today. On a few occasions, I've even had a person reference my work to me in real life and not realize who they were talking to, believe it or not. It's really fun to play dumb and get someone to explain your work to you like you don't know what it is.
I certainly didn't think any of that would happen when I first made the series, or even during development. I think the normal assumption would be to look at DSaF as it exists now and assume its release was a peak for it, but believe it or not, the official discord only had 30 people in it shortly before 3 dropped! The archive listing of the series (reposted to a single page after the series ended) is now sitting at over 1.1 MILLION downloads.
People kinda assume the true heyday of something is when it's new, when it's fresh and novel. For instance, some people look back at when FNaF itself was new and see that time as its peak because it had a lot of internet cultural relevance as big new indie thing on the block. But, raw numbers don't lie. The series has been continually growing since its conception and that growth has similarly bled over to its fan projects. This explains why DSaF, despite not having a new series release in almost 6 years, seems to be inexplicably growing.
Just recently, I saw someone post footage of a scene from DSaF 2 on Twitter, which got over 16k likes. People praised its writing and largely celebrated the scene. The ironic thing about that particular scene is that I remembered being unsure if it was good or not, so I showed it off in one of the FNaF community hubs. The response was broadly lukewarm to negative. Now, it's held up as one of the best scenes in those games. That's kind of the point I'm trying to make, my thoughts on the series have certainly changed with everyone's else with years of hindsight.
Heh. I'm not sure if I've talked about this in a long time, but y'know, the very first scene I implemented in-game was actually the very first Phone Guy scene in DSaF 1, more or less exactly how it appears in-game today. This was before I'd even written the bulk of the game. I was pretty unfamiliar with visual novels as a whole, pretty unsure if something like this would be palatable to a fandom that was really just used to sit 'n' survive stuff that were far more gameplay than text. I mean, there wasn't any FNaF fangames really LIKE DSaF before that point. Closest was FNaFb, a jokey turn based RPG made in the same engine.
The engine I made the game in is also not exactly fit for VNs out of the box either, and I wasn't 100% sure the idea would actually work. But, the very first time I added the image of the prize corner, Phone Guy, the audio of that iconic cheesy stock track and booted up a test screen, I had a little moment where I said "Oh. I think I'm onto something interesting here." I kinda remembering instantly realizing in that single moment how much potential the idea had. Over 8 years later, I still remember that moment like it was yesterday.
I think lately, that's the sort of stuff I think of when I see people coming to me and asking about the series. Yes, it's really rough around the edges, yes, there's jokes that've aged poorly. But, it is a source of comfort for people and entertains tens of thousands of people each month. And that's gotta count for something, right?

Crimson Guardian NSFW
Kyojuro Rengoku x Wife! Reader
18+ MDNI!đ«
CW: NSFW Content, minor angst, controlling/manipulating behavior, fluff-ish.
Y/N POV
Scenario : You've recently married into the respected Rengoku family, and while you continue your work as a demon slayer, life starts to get a bit messy. Balancing your duties becomes a real challenge as you navigate the challenges of married life. You find yourself having to make tough choices just to keep your husband happy, all while debating to stay true to yourself and your calling as a demon slayer.
Marriage. Truly one of the most beautiful milestones a couple can achieve. Marrying Kyojuro has undoubtedly been my greatest accomplishment.
I still remember it vividly, as if it were yesterday. Surrounded by friends, family, and core members, we pledged our lives to each other. Though it wasn't the most glamorous wedding ever seen, it was enough. Because really, all I've ever wanted was Kyojuro, and now, finally, I have him.
For the first few months, our marriage was nothing short of perfect. I moved into the Rengoku estate with Kyojuro's family, assisting Shenjuro with chores and gradually trying to get closer to Shinjuro. Though I'm not sure how successful I was.
It was only six months in that I realized being a demon slayer and a wife wasn't as easy as I thought.
Before our relationship, I was Kyojuro's Tsuguko. He was simply my mentor, and I trained hard under him to get myself where I am today. It was later down the road that we noticed each other's lingering gazes, the occasional flirting, and all the other subtle hints of wanting to be more.
Kyojuro was strong, and I knew he wanted a family, but I simply wasn't ready to give up training and my duties as a demon slayer just yet.
Every day, after helping out around the estate, I would hike over to HQ and pick up where I had left off the previous day, training until the late hours of the night. I would often come home exhausted, which usually caused Kyojuro to worry. As much as I reassured him, he never seemed fully convinced.
Now, here I was, sitting at the dinner table with Kyo across from me. It was a rare occasion for us to eat alone together like this. We made small talk about our day and training, and then he finally stopped eating and put his silverware down.
"Little Flame, I think itâs time we have a serious discussion about the way things have been as of late,â his usual happy smile seemed almost nervous.
I set my spoon down on my plate, giving him my full attention.
âYes? What is it?â
âSunflower, you have been working so hard as of late, and itâs quite admirable. I truly admire your dedication to the demon slayer corps and your training!â
âButâŠ?â I ask, confused.
âBut⊠since our marriage, Iâve found myself in constant worry over you. Every time you go on a mission without me, I have to painfully wait for your return. Not knowing whether or not you'd be injured or even-â
âDead?â I finish.
I saw his body tense up at the word.
âYes, my love. Dead. I cannot even bear the thought of you never returning to me. It pains me to my core,â he seemed so sad, so worried about me.
I know Kyojuro, I know he didnât mean anything bad by what he was saying. However, I felt almost offended. He too was a slayer, a hashira. I also had to deal with the fear of him returning with serious injuries or even never returning at all.
Did he believe me to be incapable of protecting myself? He was the very one who trained me. Even though I knew Kyojuro was strong, much stronger than me, it just felt like he lacked faith in me.
âYou donât think Iâm strong enough anymore? Do you think marriage has made me soft?â I realized I might have come off a little too harsh, but my emotions were getting the best of me.
His expression seemed surprised, but I could tell. While he may not have used those words, that was definitely the gist of it.
I watched him get up from his place at the table and walk over to me. He pulled my chair out from under the table, then grabbed my hands and kneeled down in front of me.
His big, bright eyes were now staring up at me.
âYou are one of the strongest people I know, my love. I know how capable you are, but please rememberâŠâ
He brought my hands to his lips, kissing them softly.
âYou are my wife before you are a demon slayer. I cannot risk sending you off only for you to never return.â
I could practically hear the desperation and love in his voice.
Kyojuro wasnât someone who would usually discourage anyone from pursuing something they're passionate about. So if he was now, I knew that itâs something heâs been internally battling with for a while.
âWhat about you? Is it not the same? What about my worry? What if you never come home to me?â I could feel my face start to heat up. Everything he was saying seemed to come from genuine care, but it felt so hypocritical.
âI am a Hashira, my little flame. I have a certain responsibility you do not have to burden yourself with. I shall retire soon, in just a few years. So pleaseâŠâ
Thereâs no way heâd ask me-
âPlease retire your sword, Y/N. Please stay home for me. Please allow my heart to rest easy knowing you'll be here waiting for me whenever I shall return,â his voice was pleading.
I felt so conflicted. Iâd worked so hard. All of these years of training to hopefully become a high-ranking swordsman myself. However, at the same time, I never stopped to consider my romantic life and how being married would affect things.
We both sat there in silence for a few moments, and I finally rose up from the chair, pulling him up off his knees along with me.
I looked up at him, reaching my hand up to rest on his cheek.
âKyojuro, you are the only one I would retire my sword for. So please promise me, promise me you will always come home to me. Until the day you yourself retire.â
âI promise you, Sunflower. As long as I know you are safe and waiting for me, there is no demon that could ever keep me away.â
I felt his hand on my lower back and the other holding up my chin.
We both leaned in, our lips meeting in a tender kiss.
This kiss started so gently, so lovingly at first. As we pulled away for just a moment, staring into each otherâs eyes, we realized how long it had been since we really enjoyed each otherâs company.
After that, the kiss only grew hotter and more passionate.
Kyojuro swept me off my feet and carried me straight to our shared room at the back of the estate, the most private spot. It seemed fitting for newlyweds, after all.
As he gently laid me back on the soft futon, I couldn't help but stay focused on him. Kyojuro was simply beautiful. His hair, his eyes, his body, everything about him looked like he was perfectly sculpted.
My admiration was interrupted as I felt him begin to kiss me again. One of his hands traveling to my breasts, gently squeezing it.
The other massaging my thigh.
I feel him pull away from me starting to kiss on my neck traveling all the way down to my chest.
Kyojuro had always known my weak points and how to make me say yes to his every request. He knew my body just as well as I did, and now he was taking full advantage of that knowledge.
I could feel him pressing against me as he moved his hand down my body, lightly touching me. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him closer to me, wanting more.
Then I heard, Kyojuro's soft voice whisper these words, almost as a demand. "Enjoy this little flame, you've kept me waiting far too long.â
As soon as those words left his lips, I felt myself begin to relax. His movements were so gentle, so careful, so loving.
His fingers trailed down my sides, sending chills through my body. His hands went back up and caressed my neck, making me tremble. He kissed me once more, and I melted into him.
It was as if he had cast a spell over me, and all I could do was obey him. He was completely in control of me.
After a moment, I felt him move back down and remove my underwear, revealing my already wet entrance. His hand slid between my thighs, and I couldn't help but let out a moan as his finger slipped inside me. He was gentle at first, just barely grazing me, but it felt incredible.
"Is this okay?" he asked softly, his breath hot against my ear.
I nodded but I could tell that wasnât enough for him.
âUse your words my love.â He demanded sweetly.
âYes Kyo, itâs perfect.â I said, my voice trembling.
He leaned down and kissed my lips before pulling back again, smiling at me.
"I want to be inside of you," he whispered, his voice filled with desire.
"Please," I begged.
He removed his fingers, replacing them with his cock, his tip rubbing against my clit.
"Good girl," he whispered, thrusting into me.
I threw back my head, arching my back and digging my nails into his shoulders. His movements were slow and deep at first and then they became faster and harder, and soon my whole body began to shake. I couldn't stop the moans from escaping my lips, and I couldn't help but beg for more.
When he starts to speed up I know we are both about to reach our limit.
I feel his fingers interlock with mine and his lips pressing against mine again, but this time, he wasnât just kissing me, he was also letting his teeth graze my bottom lip.
He was biting down hard enough to draw blood.
We were both so close and we were both trying to hold back but we couldnât anymore. We were finally going to let ourselves release.
I was the first one to let myself go, arching my back as I moaned his name.
Then he followed not too far behind.
After he finishes, we just lay there for a bit catching our breath.
âI love you, Y/N,â he finally breathed out, turning his head to look at me.
I turned to face him as well. âI love you, Kyojuro.â
After that, the two of us drifted off in each other's arms for the rest of the night.
The next morning when I awoke, I was still trapped wrapped in Kyojuro's arms.
After a bit of struggling, I managed to maneuver my way out and make it to the kitchen.
There I saw Senjuro, who was already preparing breakfast for everyone.
âGood morning, Sen,â I greeted with a yawn.
âOh, good morning, Y/N!â
âI'm almost finished with breakfast. Is my brother awake yet?â
âHe should be awake soon. We both have to see Master Kagaya today,â I said, rubbing my eyes.
He stopped to turn and look at me.
âDid something bad happen?â he asked nervously.
Poor Senjuro always assumes the absolute worst in every situation. Well, I suppose in this case itâs somewhat understandable.
âNo, Sen, nothing's wrong. Kyojuro and I are just going to inform Master Kagaya of my retirement. Thatâs all.â
He gave a puzzled look.
âRetirement? Why? Havenât you been training for years to improve your sword skills to move up in the ranks?â he asked.
He was right. I know I shouldnât go back on my word to Kyojuro, but I really was having second thoughts about my decision.
Senjuro could probably sense my doubt because his next response was:
"If this is something that you're not sure of, then you shouldn't do it. If you have doubts about this decision, then maybe you're not ready for retirement just yet."
His words really struck a chord with me.
Maybe he was right.
Before I could ponder that any further, Kyojuro had made his way into the kitchen.
"Good morning! How are my two favorite people doing?" he said cheerfully.
I smiled.
"Morning, Kyo. Did you sleep well?"
"I did, actually. Thank you, little flame," he walked over to me, giving me a kiss.
I could feel my chest tightening, nervous about what was to come.
The whole time at breakfast, I felt so spaced out. All I could hear was Kyojuro and Senjuro talking and the occasional grunt from Shinjuro drinking away at the table.
âSunflower? Are you okay?â
I was snapped out of my daze by Kyojuro waving a hand in front of my face. All three of them were staring at me, kind of concerned.
âOh, yeah, Iâm fine. Sorry.â
I shook my head a little and looked down at my plate. I felt bad for Senjuro going through all that trouble to cook, but I simply couldnât eat right now.
After we finished breakfast, Kyojuro and I headed out.
The thought that this would be the last time wearing my uniform with my sword by my side was so weird and almost uncomfortable to me.
I knew that this day would come eventually, but I always hoped in the back of my mind that Kyojuro would be the one to retire before me.
I had been so focused on training and my duties as a demon slayer that it had never even occurred to me how my marriage would affect everything.
I was now a wife. My first priority should be the estate, and helping Shinjuro while he was in his state of grief, and being there for Senjuro as well.
It wouldnât be right of me to go against my husband's wishes either. Especially after the intimate moment we shared. Right?
As we made it to HQ waiting to speak with the master I felt my heartbeat racing inside of me.
The room was quiet, I could feel Kyojuroâs eyes lingering on me but I couldnât bring myself to face him right now.
Both mine and Kyojuroâs attention was shifted as we heard the door open and Master Kagaya entered the room.
"Rengoku, Y/N. It's a pleasure to see you both," Kagaya said, his face as warm as ever.
"It's wonderful to see you too, Master," I replied.
"So what brings you two here? It seems urgent, judging by the fact that you came in so early."
"It is very urgent," Kyojuro began.
He then proceeded to explain our conversation from the night before, and how I was considering retiring.
"Y/N, this is a big decision, and it's important that you feel comfortable and confident in it. Do you think you can fully retire, knowing you won't be able to assist the demon slayers as you are now?" Kagaya asked.
I looked at the master and then glanced at Kyojuro. He seemed so proud and happy that we were here. I could feel the warmth radiating from him.
But, I could also sense the worry in his expression. He was nervous, scared almost.
I couldn't do that to him.
"Master, I've spent most of my life training for the opportunity to become a hashira. To serve the demon slayer corps and protect those who cannot protect themselves. But...I'm no longer just a demon slayer. I'm also a wife, and as such, I think it's only right that I focus on that," I answered.
The room fell silent for a moment.
"If you truly feel this is the right choice, then we support you, Y/N," Kagaya finally spoke.
"Thank you, Master," I bowed.
"Thank you so much, Master! I will never
forget your kindness!" Kyojuro bowed as well.
The two of us left the room and started to head out.
As we exited, we ran into a few of the other Hashira, who asked us about what we had gone to see Master Kagaya about.
They too seemed surprised and a little concerned when Kyojuro explained to them that I would be retiring so soon.
I could tell some of their reactions to the news annoyed Kyojuro. Shinobu used the word âcontrolling,â and you could see his smile almost falter.
"Controlling" was never a word I would have used to describe my husband. He just loves me, right? He wants to protect me. There's no way my sweet and kind Kyo would ever do anything to control or manipulate me.
Right?

I am so happy with the conclusion of BBC Ghosts.
There were so many things I loved about the final series that I can't even keep it all straight in my brain, I'll have to rewatch it all (and the Christmas special, of course! Must remember it's the not the true end yet!)
But something I can immediately say I loved was what they didn't do. See, that line in the trailer that turned out to be from episode 5 - about there being a pattern to when they move on - worried me. One of the best things about the show, to me, is how there truly is not any reason at all to why the ghosts are there, or when they go. It's something the creators have said over and over, and that the show has always backed up; we saw so many times that, unlike in most ghost media, addressing unfinished business or achieving emotional resolution changes absolutely nothing. Pat hit some sort of emotional resolution three times. And Julian realised the importance of family, and Robin saved someoneâs life, and Thomas discovered the truth of his death, and so on and so on. Finding closure isn't the end, and equally, the end isn't predicated by a climatic conclusion. It just happens. And the same is true for why people become ghosts. It just happens. And you exist, and fill your days, and then youâre gone. And no one knows why.
It's kind of the most agnostic television show I've ever seen.
I love that. Every other afterlife show I've ever seen has some kind of reward and punishment system. Or at least says that there's a reason for things, some kind of higher power at play, not necessarily a god but something like it. Even the American adaptation felt the need to bring Hell into it, which is why I need to specify that I'm only talking about the British version here. And I feel like a lot of fans wanted there to be reasons too, or felt like there simply had to be, that it wasn't even a question. I get why - it's not just because it's the standard for ghost narratives. It's really uncomfortable to think about the randomness of life and death. But Mary didn't go because of anything that happened before that day, and Cap was never going to go because he came out, and one day, when they've all gone, there won't have been a reason for it.
Because the real point of BBC Ghosts is that there is no point. Youâve just got to make it through the days, surrounded by people that irritate you, trapped in a confusing world where youâre mostly powerless. And it sucks, and you're angry, and sad, and bored as hell. And you also find happiness in the mundane chaos, and you get really good at chess, and watch the ants in the garden, and write bad poetry, and read terrible romance novels, and gamble money you don't have, and go camping, and play games, and learn French, and watch reality TV, and have sex with a decapitated Tudor noblemanâs body, and dance to old music, and look at the stars, and find that you actually really love all those annoying people after all, and thatâs the point.
#bbc ghosts#bbc ghosts spoilers#bbc ghosts series 5#but imagine if they prove me wrong by melodramatically killing them all off at christmas though lmao actually that would be hilarious do it#also love so very much that they finished on a gay joke they know who's on the front lines for them <3#god it's a cliche but really do already miss 'em

Hiding behind anon despite the fact ive been non-anon on here hi guys whatsup I have random mostly Grujaja centered things but theres others...............cause....yeah.... -Would be the best at hide and seek, he could just bury himself into the ground and turn the cone until you cant see the face. Would spend hours in one spot because nobody can locate this guy... -Would be that one guy at the party who stands awkwardly in the corner with a red cup. He didnt want to be there but someone else dragged him there and now he has to deal with it. -I feel like Grujaja would wear things like ear mufflers or sunglasses. He wears that cone all the time (as someone who wears headphones alot when you take them off its like getting hit by a truck sometimes.) Would probably also have a moment because the cone gets in the way of his breathing a little. -Hides small things in his cone, basically carrying small items on his head all the time. Things he can just drop whenever he wants them. -P would probably be concerningly good at combat games. P has got some inner demons or something. -Al constantly thinks he is that guy. He is infact not that guy. -Vib is an artist, P is also an artist. The two would probably do art together. -I feel like- whatever Bizzyboys are- they have really strong tails, some of them have tails that can support their bodies weight, kind of like a cool chair. I don't know if youve ever played monster hunter but if you look up the Great Maccao you'll see where im going with this. -They also have good hearing and eyesight too, but its...selective? Its very easy for them to just tune things out or loose focus if they want too. Their emotions/environment probably get in the way of this though. -The Bizzyboys have AT SOME POINT done a Team Rocket type skit.
Thank you for your wall. eats it. i drew stuffs for this and also talked about my own headcanons a little bit
the point about breathing being hard in the cone was an actual concern i had for him during the edge of milldread fight. its hot there he's gonna get heatstroke <:[ I also hc him bringing sensory headphones for when life gets too loud post game.
Patty gamer rage is so real and true in my heart. shes so sweety until you boot up mortal combat or guilty gear and then she immediately goes feral. fight those demons girl its scary in here.
Al is that guy to me even if he isn't that guy <3
I headcanon each of the bizzyboys we see as one form of artist or another! they all seem to have artistic tendencies! all were seen drawing in buzzhuzz, even Grujaja, he drew on his cone! Capo included as well. that mans art is cooking to me. Fun fact: on king posters posted to the limbolane account theres graffiti in red with a small Al drawn in the corner implying Al can draw <3
I dont think they can balance on their tails due to the thickness not being enough to support a whole body upright like a Great Maccao, but i do subscribe to their tails being strong enough to support their weight similar to how people portray possums hanging by their tails (though that isnt something possums can actually really do) It's common to pick up young drainfolk by their tail like this in my heart.... or adult ones if you're tall enough and have a death wish! Bonus: I also headcanon young drainfolk climbing onto adults when spooked or upset. (usually parents, though Grujaja Didn't have those anymore so...)
I agree on this one, though i'm biased because i'm the same way. I've had to be physically grabbed sometimes while reading books to get my attention and even still sometimes that didnt work.
#great god grove#ggg spoilers#ggg capochin#ggg bizzyboys#ggg grujaja#ggg patty#ggg hector#dont make me tag all of them pls#tagging gr and patty tho because favorite privileges /silly#ask#small grujaja returns so i can talk about headcanons lol#also if it aint clear i love drawing these guys bristling their tails its fun as hell and silly#jealous of them because i cant do that for reeeeeal IT SHOULDA BEEEEN MEEEEEEEE

Another Chance to Live Part 1 (Ana Maria CrnogorÄeviÄ x Reader)
Summary: Ana and you are both struggling with unwanted transfers, but maybe you can at least find happiness off the pitch.
A/N: This is the first part of a story I've been working on for a while. I guess my way of processing my emotions about Ana's transfer. I've been in the denial stage for a long time đ
The next two chapters are already written (just need to edit them) and so far it's a total of about 13k words. I'm now at a crossroad which will decide how long the story becomes. So I thought I'd publish the first part and see how much interest there is in a story like this to help me decide.
It felt like a cruel joke of the universe that now, now when you had been forced to leave, the woman youâve had a crush on for years, joined your team, or well your former team. Words that made your heart crack a little more every time you thought them. Never in a billion years had you expected your team to become your former team.
Ever since you had first laid eyes on Ana you had been dazzled by her, not necessarily only by her looks, although you definitely enjoyed them, but also by her personality and her aura. She always radiated so much kindness and positive energy. It was impossible not to be drawn to her.
Sadly your paths didnât cross all too often and when they did, Ana was always somewhere in the heart of whatever group you were part of, while you were lingering on the edges, looking in. So the Swiss woman was probably only vaguely aware of your existence, while you soaked up every detail you could find about Ana. The more you learnt, the more you liked her.
And yes, sometimes when you lay in bed at night you made up little scenarios how the two of you would meet. One of your favorite ones was Ana coming to Atleti, not really knowing her way around Madrid yet, so you take her under your wing and show her everything. And of course she starts falling for you as you spend so much time together. It was your imagination after all, so you could day dream all you wanted.
Now part of this little fantasy was actually coming true, Ana really was joining AtlĂ©tico, and it frustrated you to no end that now that she came, you were gone. Although perhaps it wasnât the universe being cruel towards you, maybe it was protecting you because even if you played for the same team there was no way the Swiss woman would ever go for someone like you.
Still, you spent a good amount of time fuming about it in your apartment. Possibly also because it was easier to focus on that rather than on the fact that your childhood club had just dropped you like you meant nothing. Every time you remembered the conversation with the clubâs managers you felt like throwing up, hiding under the covers for the rest of your life, and ripping off your ears so you didnât have to listen to one more word from them. So yeah, it was comforting in a weird way to think about your missed chance with Ana, especially since it never had been much of a chance anyway.
It was harder to hold on to that strange comfort when training actually started and you had to go to Real Madridâs training center every day. Most days were spent attempting to do your best and keep your negative emotions in check, while thinking nonstop about how much you hated this, how much you wanted to return to Atelti, how much you wanted to leave Madrid altogether.
So all in all you werenât having the best time, barely getting by was actually a more accurate way to describe it. Then a few weeks after the season started you got a call from Lola.
âSooo I heard youâre doing a lot of moping these days,â she teased you.
However there was an underlying note of worry in her voice. You had done your best to pretend as if Atletiâs decision hadnât hurt you, that these things happen in football, and you were completely fine with it, but Lola had seen right through it.
âIâm not moping, Iâm just quiet and focused like usual,â you quickly defended yourself. It was only partially true, you hated every single second you spent at the training center of Real Madrid.
âThatâs not what Iâve heard, but how about you convince me over a cup of coffee. Maybe tomorrow afternoon?â
You didnât even question how Lola knew that you had the day off tomorrow, apparently she had some spies at Real. As much as you didnât want to continue talking about the misery that was your new club, you did want to see your friend, so you agreed.
âI might ask some other people if they want to tag along. Everyone misses you,â Lola continued, making you happy and sad at the same time. It was nice to be missed, but you wished you werenât in a position where you could be missed.
Before you could hang up, Lola told you to bring âyour moping buddy Misaâ, then she ended the call with a cackle, not giving you any chance to retaliate. In all honesty there was some truth to it, both you and Misa were unhappy at Real, so it wasnât surprising that she was the only person you had really bonded with so far.
Going by Lolaâs words you expected a big group the next day when you entered the cafĂ© you had agreed upon. What you found however were merely three people, Lola, Misa and no one other than Ana.
Suddenly your stomach was filled with butterflies flapping their wings wildly, making you somewhat nauseous as a result. You hadnât expected this and you werenât prepared for it at all. If it wouldnât have been incredibly rude you would have walked right back out of the cafĂ©.
Instead you walked over to the small group, doing your best impression of a friendly smile. You could have sworn you saw a knowing glint in both Misaâs and Lolaâs eyes. There was no way they knew about your crush though, right?
Lola jumped up when she saw you, hugging you tightly. âItâs good to see you, chica, Iâve missed you,â she told you.
You had to blink a couple of times to chase away the tears burning in your eyes. There was no denying that you had missed her too, all of your former teammates really. You longed to be back at Atlético, and not only because Ana was there.
Right, Ana.
You extracted yourself from your friend and smiled at the blonde. Should you hug her as well? Or greet her with kisses on the cheeks? Thatâs exactly why you should have been informed that Ana would be there, so that you could think this over beforehand. Or, well, over think it.
Unlike you Ana knew exactly what to do; she got up, greeted you kindly and gave you a quick hug. âItâs nice to see you again, Y/N. Weâve never had much of a chance to talk, so Iâm glad we get one now.â
For a few seconds too long you started at her. You were torn between awe, and a little bit of envy, at how easily the Swiss woman had navigated this greeting, and shock. She remembered you? She was happy to see you? Once your heart slowed down from a wild canter to a moderate gallop and your brain was working more clearly again, you realized that this was probably just something Ana had said to make the situation less awkward, not something she truly meant.
âSo, do you want to sit down?â Lola suggested with a smirk on her face. Thankfully she left it at that though and you quickly sank down into a chair. You felt too embarrassed to look at Ana, so you completely missed the reassuring smile she sent your way.
After that things went much more smoothly, mostly because Lola and Ana carried the conversation, allowing you and Misa to remain in your preferred role, attentive listener. Your former teammate as well as your crush tried valiantly to draw you out of your shell, but out of fear of saying something stupid, you kept your answers as short as possible without being weird or unfriendly. If only you could think of something witty to say!
On the bright side your relative quietness gave you a good opportunity to study Ana. She was stunning as always, but you could easily spot the signs of the toll this move to the AtlĂ©tico had taken on her; her smile wasnât quite as wide as usual and didnât reach her eyes, her voice was a little duller, there were badly covered up dark bags underneath her eyes and she was a bit more subdued than normal in general. Man, you really had spent way too long looking at any video of her you could find to notice things like that!
Then all of the sudden Misa let out a gasp. âI completely forgot I promised my neighbor Iâd let in her daughter today. I need to leave right now to make it.â
You frowned at your teammate; it wasnât like her to forget something as important as that. Was something more than her unhappiness with being stuck at Real bothering her? You made a mental note to ask Misa about it the next day, remind her that you were always there if she needed someone.
Misaâs departure didnât really change anything in the dynamic, she hadnât contributed much just like you. But then Lola got a phone call from her girlfriend who apparently needed your former teammate urgently. She looked at the two of you apologetically, however you could swear that there was some glee shimmering behind her regretful front.
âYou girls should stay here and enjoy the rest of the afternoon. Really Iâm so sorry about this, donât let it ruin your day,â Lola babbled, pressing a kiss to both your and Anaâs cheek before dashing out of the cafĂ©.
You looked after her with confusion. The confusion however was short-lived, quickly drowned out by panic once you realized that you were now left alone with Ana. No more hiding behind other people, no more safety net. You werenât ready. However leaving also wasnât an option, there was no way you could do so without offending Ana, so you had to pull yourself together.
âIâm sorry about that,â Ana apologized, bringing your confusion back. As far as you were aware the Swiss woman had absolutely nothing to apologize for.
âThey probably planned this because they think I need to be more social again. I wouldnât be surprised if Jenni put them up to it, sheâs been pretty worried,â the Swiss woman specified, leaving you reeling because you didnât know how to deal with that much honesty.
âOh,â you replied, praying that some more words would enter your brain. âMaybe they also did it for me. They think Iâm pretty antisocial in general,â you finished, kicking yourself for making yourself look even more pathetic than you already did.
To your surprise Ana didnât seem put off; on the contrary she chuckled and said, âWell we can be antisocial together then.â
The Swiss woman using the word âtogetherâ in reference to the both of you made you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, you could definitely get used to that.
In an attempt to take control of the situation and not end up blurting out something stupid if Ana asked you a question, you inquired how she was liking Madrid so far. It seemed like a normal thing to ask someone that had just moved to a new place.
However the Swiss woman didnât answer right away, which was atypical for her who always seemed to have a reply ready. That combined with the guarded look in her eyes made you realize that this wasnât a safe and easy topic for her. In your rush to make sure nothing that would be complicated for you came up, you had totally forgotten that Anaâs own move to Madrid had been anything but a happy occurence. Way to be selfish!
âOh my god, Iâm so sorry. Forget I said anything, that was such a stupid thing to say,â you apologized frantically
âNo, donât worry, itâs fine,â Ana quickly reassured you. âI just donât really know what to say. Obviously I didnât want to come here, I miss Barcelona. Both the city and the team. So Iâm not having the best time to be completely honest. Then again I also havenât given Madrid much of a chance yet. SoâŠâ
The Swiss womanâs openness left you stunned once again. This could never be you, sharing your thoughts and feelings so freely. At the same time you noticed with a surge of excitement and dread that Anaâs explanation gave you a good opening, not unlike your daydreams in fact.
Your fear of being annoying and overstepping was battling hard against your longing to get to spend more time with the blonde in the future. In the end you decided to go for it, maybe Ana would appreciate it and if she didnât want to hang out again, she could just say so. Of course there was still the fear of rejection holding you back, but you shoved that to the back of your mind. If you didnât ask the answer would always be no, right?
âIf you want to I could show you around Madrid sometime. Iâve lived here all my life so I know the place like the back of my hand and know some nice places. Totally fine if you donât of course, Iâm sure there are many other people that could show you around.â
You spoke in record speed, making it hard for Ana to follow, which was why it took her a moment to answer. These few seconds were some of the most horrible ones in your life. If she said no now all your hopes would be shattered once and for all. Everyone always said it was important to know so you could move on, but honestly if the Swiss woman didnât want to spend any time with you, you didnât want to know.
âThat sounds great, Iâd love to,â Ana replied once she had enough time to process your jumble of words.
âReally?â You double checked, the words out of your mouth before you could stop yourself.
âYeah, definitely,â the Swiss woman confirmed with a gentle smile. A smile that you returned happily. You hadnât felt this excited in a while, it was a nice change from the bleakness that had become your constant companion.
The rest of your time together was spent chatting easily. You werenât a great conversationalist, however with Ana it came much more natural. The blonde definitely did the heavy lifting, but you were happy with your own contributions. You even made her laugh a few times!
Later that day when you were back in your apartment you were much more critical, taking apart every single thing that you had said and coming to the conclusion that you must be the stupidest person on the planet. Thankfully you were going to get another chance in a few days and this time you would be better prepared. You would say interesting things and you would make sure Ana had a great time. The blonde deserved some joy and happiness and you would do your best to give her that.
Before your next meeting with Ana you actually made a plan; you would make a list of her interests and think of possible questions, some jokes and interesting facts you could mention. You spent one evening on it, working furiously and then you realized what you were doing, feeling very foolish all of the sudden. You scrunched up the piece of paper and threw it into the trash with some force.
This was pointless and unnecessary and totally embarrassing! Maybe you werenât the best at coming up with things to say on the spot, but rehearsing everything like this was a role in a play was stupid. The urge to do absolutely everything to get Ana to like you was huge, however is she only liked this carefully crafted version of you that wasnât any better than her not liking you at all.
Also, you shouldnât even attempt to get the Swiss woman to like you. Just like you should keep your own crush in check. Anaâs life was complicated enough at the moment, you didnât need to add your infatuation into the mix.
Unfortunately your noble plan to ignore your crush failed miserably. Whenever you spent time with Ana you fell a little more for her. It was simply impossible not to when she was the kindest, funniest, most interesting and on top of that most beautiful person in the world.
Like when you were out and about on one of your strolls to the city and a young couple approached you, asking if you could take a picture of them. As was typical for you, you hesitated for a moment; not necessarily because you didnât want to, but because your mind was already working in overdrive, supplying you with every possible negative outcome.
Ana on the other hand smiled at them. âOf course! Where do you want to take it?â
And then she proceeded to take several pictures of the two, showing them to the couple, and when they werenât completely satisfied yet, she even offered her own suggestions on how they might turn out even better.
All the way you were just watching them, well mostly Ana, with a goofy smile. You loved how much she cared, how much effort she put into random people she didnât even know. No wait, you didnât love that, you liked that, admired it.
Or when Ana convinced you to go into a tiny café. A place you would have never frequented on your own because the intimacy of it freaked you out. Not the blonde though. Within seconds she began chatting with the owner, a middle-aged woman who was thrilled someone showed so much interest in her small establishment.
The cake you got was very tasty as was the coffee and the homemade ice tea. You were quick to admit that Ana had made a good decision by forcing you to go there.
However what really pulled at your heartstring was that the Swiss woman went up to the owner afterwards and asked if it was okay to post about this place on Instagram. The poor woman almost started crying out of happiness and thanked Ana profusely, while the blonde kept insisting that this was nothing and really it should be her thanking the owner.
So it was safe to say that you fell deeper and harder every time you saw Ana. But it was okay, you had a foolproof way to make sure that the blonde didnât figure it out and therefore her life didnât get disrupted because of you. Whenever you echoed a statement Ana had made about how much she liked hanging out with you or that she thought you were a great person, you always added âfriendâ into the mix; âI enjoy hanging out with you too, youâre such a great friend.â and âAw thank you. Youâre one of the best people and friends I know too!â
Sometimes when you were feeling particularly hopeful you wondered if the lack of specification on Anaâs part meant that she liked you as more than a friend. You always discarded the idea quickly though. It was much more likely that the thought of being more than friends was so ludicrous to the blonde, something that had probbly never even grazed her mind, that she didnât feel the need to explicitly state it.
Despite having to resign yourself to the fact that Ana didnât like you like that, it still made you happy that she was usually in a good mood when you were hanging out. Something you were secretly very proud of. Still every once in a while her sadness shined through, for example when she heard someone speak Catalan or when she saw something that reminded her of Barcelona.
One time a group of fans came up to her. They were friendly and excited and the Swiss woman matched their energy effortlessly. But then one of them mentioned how sad they were that Ana wasnât playing for Barça anymore. You were forced to watch the blonde deflate slightly after that thoughtless statement. She was good at pretending though, so the fans were none the wiser.
When they were gone you gathered all of your courage. Up until now you had stayed in the shallows of easy conversation so this was a first and once again you worried about overstepping. But when you saw Anaâs sad eyes and the forcefully pulled up corners of her mouth, you couldnât stay silent.
âDo you want to talk about it? I mean your transfer from Barça? I know we havenât really talked about that or othe serious things yet, but Iâm always happy to listen. Iâm actually pretty good at that.â
The Swiss woman sighed, rubbing a hand over her face.
âThatâs very sweet but honestly Iâve been talking so much about it lately. Sometimes it feels like itâs the only thing anyone wants to talk about anymore. So if itâs okay with you could we just continue like before? The distraction has been helping a lot.â
You had been helping! Happiness flowed through you and your smile was maybe a bit bigger than was warranted for a situation like this. However unless Ana was studying you as intently as you always studied her, you doubted that the blonde would notice.
âYeah, of course. Iâm happy to help in anyway.â
Ana and you kept seeing each other regularly and it was the undisputed highlight of your current life. Honestly it was a little worrying how few other things brought you any joy, but you didnât allow yourself to dwell on that.
So when you were put into a situation where you had to cancel on Ana you were devastated. It wasnât an appropriate reaction to something so small, but you had a ten minute crying session until you could even begin to function properly again. Calling the Swiss woman was out of the question though, you were still chocked up and sniffling.
Instead you texted her, apologizing multiple times and explaining that you were roped into doing all sorts of things last minute for your fatherâs birthday tomorrow. You could have slapped yourself for not seeing this coming. Sure, your parents had assured you time and time again that everything was taken care of, but you should have known better. Then you could have done it before today and werenât forced to cancel on Ana.
Only minutes after you had sent the text your phone started ringing with a call from the Swiss woman. With wide, panicked eyes you stared at the screen. In the end your desire to at least hear Anaâs voice if you couldnât see her won out. Hopefully she wouldnât notice anything.
âHey I just saw your text and wanted to ask if I can help out with anything.â
You smiled at your phone, your heart warmed by Anaâs kindness. There was no doubt in your mind that she would actually follow through on your offer. Not that you would ever take it.
âAw thank you so much, Ana! But itâs okay really. Most things I have to do at my parents place anyway. You know help them clean and decorate. So Iâll be out most of the day, and then in the evening Iâll have to bake the cake. Who knows how thatâs going to go.â
You chuckled, even if you were feeling slightly panicked at the idea of baking. Normally your mother was in charge of that, but she had broken her arm a few weeks ago, so that was out of the question. Moments like this made you wish that you had some siblings or some cousins for that matter, just anyone to help you out.
âNot to brag, but Iâm actually a great baker. So if you want some help, Iâm happy to come over in the evening and help,â the blonde offered.
It would be nice to have some help, and you always wanted to see Ana. Plus she had brought up the idea of her own accord, so surely it was okay, right?
âThat would be great actually. Thank you so much,â you replied, not giving your mind any more opportunity to drive yourself crazy.
Ana and you quickly planned everything out before you hung up and left to do everything else. With the prospect of seeing the Swiss woman later today you were a lot more cheerful than before.
âWhatâs got you so happy?â Your mother asked you while she supervised the decorating process.
It was incredibly frustrating since she kept criticizing everything you did. Every few minutes you had to step away for a moment, take some deep breaths and visualize how your evening with Ana would be, full of laughter and fun conversation.
âNot this, thatâs for sure,â you muttered, low enough so that your mothers whose hearing wasnât the best anymore, couldnât here you.
âWhat?â
âNothing,â you said louder, âIâm just in a good mood, I guess.â
There was no point in bringing up Ana. Nothing would ever happen between the two of you and even after knowing about it for almost ten years your parents still struggled with your sexuality. To avoid unnecessary conflict and awkwardness you never spoke about women you liked unless it was something serious. So never.
âYou should focus on decorating and not smile so much. Maybe then we would get somewhere.â
You rolled your eyes, but kept your mouth shut. No point in pointing out that most parents would be happy if their child was happy. And it wasnât like your mother wasnât happy about it, she just wasnât good at being pleasant around you. Somehow she always felt the need to criticize you.
Hours later you got into your car, quickly drove away and as soon as you were a decent distance from your parentsâ house you let out a loud scream, releasing all of the built up frustration. Then you set your focus on the near future, on the fact that you would be meeting Ana in half an hour at your apartment. Baking wasnât really your thing, but baking with the Swiss sounded like a lot of fun. Anything was fun with her really; just being around her made you so happy.
When you got to your apartment Ana was already waiting for you, leaning against her car. A big smile appeared on the blondeâs face when she saw you and she waved at you happily. It warmed your insides, swept away any remnant of frustration from the long day with your parents, seeing how excited Ana was to see you.
You got set up quickly, putting out all the ingredients and opening up the recipe you had settled on. Then you turned to the Swiss woman expectantly.
âSo any baking pro tips from you before we start?â You asked teasingly.
Ana looked at you sheepishly.
âTo be completely honest I donât really know that much about baking. I usually only bake once a year to make some Christmas cookie,â the blonde admitted, scratching her nose.
You frowned at her in confusion. This didnât really make any sense to you, but you didnât want to make Ana feel bad about it.
âSo why did you say you did?â You asked carefully. âI mean only if you want to tell me, itâs totally fine if you donât. Iâm sure you had your reasons.â
The Swiss woman blushed a little as she explained herself, âI really just wanted to spend some time with you today.â
Your heart started racing at this confession, your hopes going through the roof. It didnât take long for the logical part of your brain to bring you back to earth though. Surely this didnât mean what you wanted it to mean. Most likely Ana was just struggling today and didnât want to be alone.
âOh Iâm sorry youâre having a hard time today. You know you can always tell me that and if itâs possible at all Iâll always make time for you. You donât have to make up reasons to hang out.â
Ana stared at you with a pained expression. It hurt your heart to see her in pain and it made you wonder if something had happened today, perhaps something that reminded her of Barcelona?
âDo you want to talk about it?â You asked when the blonde stayed quiet, but then you thought better of it. âWait no Iâm sorry, you already said that youâre tired of talking about it before and that you prefer a distraction. So letâs bake!â
You put some extra excitement into your voice and made sure to keep up a stream of easy chatter as you got to work. For a while Ana remained a bit distant and quiet, but before too long her smile returned and she began talking and joking.
When the blonde laughed loudly at a joke you had made you felt very proud of yourself for giving Ana what she needed, a distraction. If you continued to be helpful she would keep wanting to hang out with you and that was also very much in your interest. Even if the knowledge that it meant something else to you hurt somewhat every time you thought of it.
However it was all worth it to get to spend time with Ana. Everything was worth that.

Hotd writers choosing to adapt Mushroom's records out of everything they had in hand is the worst decision they could've ever come up with btw.
It's been stated time and time again that while F&B is purely built on records and gossip and morphed retelling of events out of bias and propaganda, Mushroom is the LEAST reliable of all the sources. He's a fool at Rhaenyra's court, his job is make people gasp and laugh, not retell historical events.
We're talking about the same guy who said that he had a penis large enough to match the size of his head, mind you. Also, he's obsessed with little girls giving BJs to Targaryen men somewhere in Flea Bottom. It's happened twice according to him.
The writers' reasoning for this choice is basically that F&B was written by Maesters and Septons, who were all greedy men, apart from being Green supporters. So anything they say is false, anything they say is written with sexist intent. Writer's intention was to do the exact opposite.
Then tell me, for the love of God, tell me, why is every woman apart from Rhaenyra, who is clearly whitewashed and I can go into heavy detail about that, basically shunned?
The Maesters claim Alicent left Viserys' body to rot and swell for days preparing and LEADING Rhaenyra's usurpation. She's the leader of the Greens, she and she alone. Not Otto. The Green Council answers only to her orders, they are loyal to HER.
I've seen people argue that since Alicent is what Maesters view as an "ideal" woman, then they would try anything to paint her in the best light possible. While I agree that this may be true, I don't think this is the case. In history books, even in real life, women are rarely painted as leaders or important figures.
For Queen Alicent to be written as THE face of the Greens, you know this mama wasn't playing around.
Now, how is this:
In ANY WAY, even comparable to THIS?:
At the end of ep.8 and quite literally the entirety of ep.9, Alicent is shown as a lost woman who doesn't even seem to know what she's doing, pushed by Viserys' last words about prophecy rather than SHEER DESIRE to get her hands dirty for her children's safety (which by the way will always be superior imo). The Green Council conspires behind her back, and on top of it all, she's yelled at by one of her own men and is made to take it like a beaten dog.
Moreover, we had Helaena's ROAST (yes it was a roast, my Queen inherited cunty lines from her cunty mother) against Aegon and her coronation, the latter being addressed as something quite wholesome, if you ask me. Alicent places her own crown upon her daughter's head and calls her "my Queen" after kissing her cheeks and kneeling. Afterwards, her and Alicent are literally written to be the only ones who could get through Aegon II's thick skull when he wanted to start the war right then and there as a result of Rhaenyra crowning herself on Dragonstone.
You hear me??? Aegon sat down and fucking listened to the two women in his life. Not the Council, them. These two were dogwalking him, the KING, on the daily, how is that sexist writing on the Maesters' part????
Yet these things are nowhere to be seen in Ryan Condal and Sara Hess' "progressive" show. We got beaten dog Alicent and Helaena being nothing but a walking spoiler machine other than yet another instrument to paint Aegon as the big bad wolf and usurper. Not a single scene of them counseling Aegon.
Baela and Rhaena have nearly no lines or scenes that don't show them in the presence of the Strongs. They are seemingly okay with anything Rhae throws their way because it's Rhae. The one and only scene about Baela openly speaking to her grandma about her wish to fight for Rhaenyra was deleted.
Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is stripped of her rage and thirst for vengeance, and instead made to negotiate for peace while in the books she was the one pushing to go to war first.
Can you tell me, again, how the fanfiction that is Hotd supposed to prove that they want to be "progressive" in contrast to the Maesters' "sexist" work, when literally all they do is whitewash Rhaenyra and sideline any woman who isn't her?

I see this alot in fanon and I think jason Todd's parents are completely misunderstood.
Disclaimer: I am not a victim of parents with drug abuse nor have a I ever done drugs. I sympathize and emphasize with people who struggle with drug abuse as there are many reasons to get into it and it's very hard on your body to get clean, I will link help organizations below. This does mean that I can be a little ignorant to the struggles so if I say anything offensive or wrong, please call me out and educate me so I don't make the same mistake
Jason's family has been retconned so many times, it's hard to keep it straight. But this is my headcannon based on what I've seen:
1. I feel like a lot of people write Willis Todd to be this awful abusive scumbag who hated his kid and his wife. If you are talking about young justice or arkhamverse, this canonically true, but I think that's far from the truth in the main universe, prime or whatever it's called. In batman 411, jason is clearly distraught by Willis' death and does try to avenge him by lashing out at Two face. We also can't forget about the incident with the penguin that led to the worst Bruce and jason characterization before gotham war. And that's because of one rhato issue where jason finally reads willis' letters (a truly heartbreaking issue: rhato rebirth 23)
I believe that Willis wasn't a bad dad. Not a good dad, but not an awful abusive one. I 100% believe he has never abused his family in this universe. And you know what, he wasn't a great person. He was a drug dealer and then a henchmen. But he CARED. He cared about his family. He tried so hard to provide for Catherine and Jason for their medical bills, food, shelter. He just had a poor upbringing and some real shit luck, trying to survive in poverty in Gotham city.
2. Catherine has been written in fanon to be a perfect caring mother who was nothing but a victim. I believe that she wasn't as good of a mother and a person as people make her out to be. And we haven't seen everything, but I believe this because she seems selfish. She seems to put herself and her drug addiction before her family, doesn't seem to even try to get clean or take care of jason or provide. Look at these panels:
She neglected Jason. He had to go out and put his life on the line day after day when it should've been the other way around. Jason was a kid. And don't get me wrong, she probably loved jason and had good intentions, no, she definitely loved him, or else jason wouldn't canonically think as highly of her and take care of her the way he did, but she wasn't perfect and I don't think she was as good of a mother as she's made out to be.
3. Canonically, jason seems to really care for Catherine, but not Willis. I have a theory about that. For why he thinks so highly of catherine: I've never had a parent who suffered from drug abuse, but I do have a parent who suffered from a lot of mental health issues like depression, diagnosed, and I feel like bpd, though it was never diagnosed. When things were bad, they were BAD. I witnessed a lot. But when things were good, things were REALLY GOOD. I feel like when Catherine would come off the drug haze, things were like that. She probably took care of him during those times and was loving and all that. Catherine is the one parent figure Jason has to hold onto (because of all the shit with Bruce, Sheila, etc.). He forcibly removes the bad shit she's done and hangs onto the good things she's done because she really did care about him and in life, it seems harder to hate your mom than your dad (from what i have heard when i did research on this from friends). I've done that for years, and idk if I'm explaining it right, but I think that's the best way I can. For why he doesn't love willis: I think up until he read the notes, he didn't have the full picture. From his perspective, willis leaves to do crime and then eventually gets caught and left forever. I think he blamed willis for making jason become "the man of the house" and have all this extra responsibility. Willis also strikes me as the type of parent who has trouble expressing feelings, so jason probably rarely, if ever, heard "I love you" from his dad. Willis also strikes me as the person who would believe that he needs to make his son stronger in order to survive, and there are a lot of parents like that, especially parents from a low income household or a history of poverty.
In conclusion, both parents were FAR from perfect parents, but they're not as evil or as innocent as people write them in fanon. They're just...people. fanon likes to write comic people as black or white, innocent or abusive, but in reality, It's a gray area. Willis had his flaws, I hc him as one of those old fashioned kind of dads who wants his son to be tough and strong and isn't good with sharing his feelings, but does truly care about his family and NEVER was abusive. Catherine was a mother who definitely cared about her family, but wasn't an innocent victim and had her own flaws.
Anyway, thank you for coming to my Ted talk

Master list
Synopsis: in a world where alphas, betas, and omegas live along side modern humans as second class citizens, you've fallen through the cracks of a society that wants to take everything wonderful from you. Luckily a timely encounter with the boys just might save your life.
Chapter summary: encounters with people from your past challenge your future with the pack.
Warnings: people generally being assholes, mentions of blood, car accident
WC: 8.2k
A/N: when i came home and said i wanted to write, beastie said "make it hurt" so lets blame this on her.
It's been three weeks since the pack left for the new house, leaving Yoongi and Jimin behind to fix some minor repairs on the old house and wait for you. Just this morning, Yoongi had finished patching up a hole in the drywall where Namjoon had once tripped and pushed his hand through just with his own strength. But there was still no sight or scent of you.
Yoongi had just finished making a sandwich when the front door opened and Jin walked in.Â
"Aren't you supposed to be at work?" Yoongi grumbled before biting into his lunch.
"I came to see you," Jin replied, almost convincingly casual.
"Why?" The younger man asked with a full mouth.
Jin sighed, he genuinely wanted to be pleasant. This wasn't the first time he had come to the house and wanted to patch things up with Yoongi, but the man wasn't making it easy with his cold behavior. Still, Jin decided it would be best to be upfront so he could have a real conversation with him. "We got an offer on the house this morning."
Yoongi paused mid bite before he continued and chewed without responding.
"I wanted to run it by you," Jin continued.
Yoongi snorted. "What does it have to do with me? It's your house, yours and Hoseok's. The one your parents bought you. I've never been anything but a guest here."
"That's not true, Yoongi. You know it's not. You're an important part of our lives. I know I was selfish, but please give me a chance to show you how sorry I am and how much I love you," Jin begged. "I'll do anything."
Yoongi turned his head away, unable to look Jin in the eyes. "The only thing I want right now isn't something you can give me," he admitted. He wished that he could think of anything other than you, but even patching things up with Jin wasn't something that he could focus on for very long.
"You still haven't seen her?" Jin asked softly. Yoongi shook his head.
"Looks like she really doesn't need me to be her alpha. Hoseok was right."
Jin took a step closer, wishing he could get close enough to comfort his packmate. He'd still think of Yoongi that way no matter what. "I'm certain Hobi didn't mean that. And she doesn't seem to know what she needs, to be honest. She'd be incredibly lucky to have you as an alpha, Yoongi."Â
He couldn't respond, too choked up on his own emotions. He knew that Jin was right, because he knew he'd be the best alpha possible to you, but right now he was just a mess.Â
"One of the ways my mom has used to get inside my head is telling me that you want to take the pack alpha position from me," Jin admitted.Â
Yoongi looked at him with surprised eyes and lifted brows. "When have I ever made you think I wanted to do that?"
Jin shrugged. "You kinda have pack alpha energy. Even my mom noticed it the few times she met you. And ever since we met you've always argued with me. Honestly, since you came to us I've always been a little insecure about it."
Yoongi laughed quietly. "To be completely honest, when I first met you guys I thought maybe I could take the leader position from you. But as soon as I got to know you, I didn't feel like I needed to."
"What changed your mind?"
"The way that you treated Tae after the incident. You were so gentle and caring with him. You never made him feel bad for what happened or shamed him. You just took care of him. And then I knew you would take care of all of us, so that's when I remember falling for you."
Jin frowned. "I'm sorry I didn't live up to that version of myself."
"You can probably do it again," Yoongi shrugged.
"I promise, I'm really trying." A moment of silence passed between them but the air felt a little lighter. "Will you and Jimin come home, please? It won't be right for any of us until you guys are there. We all miss you both."
Yoongi nodded sadly, "I guess I can't wait for her forever."
"Hobi has been putting together a room for her," Jin told him, but it only seemed to make Yoongi's heart stink further. "You will find her, Yoon."
"How?" Yoongi breathed.
"I don't know. There's this old thing that people used to talk about, called fated mates. No one really believes in them anymore. But the idea is, some people are meant to come into your life, and I don't think you would feel like this for no reason."
If you're wondering why you haven't gone to Yoongi yet, it's because things were actually going quite well for you, at least by comparison. One company on Jimin's list stood out to you immediately. The cleaning service was owned by an omega named Ana, and you learned that she was particularly passionate about helping other omegas who escaped abusive situations like she had. She knew working gave you the ability to be independent, but that it wasn't easy to keep up. She took one look at you and knew you were exactly the kind of girl who needed her help. Jimin's name only sealed the deal, though she didn't bother to call him up. When she said someone was needed to clean at the public library, you jumped at the chance to work somewhere you already knew.Â
It had been three weeks now, and everything was going well, by your standards. You were still staying at the shelter, but you'd already gotten your first paycheck and in a month or two you might be able to get yourself out of there. For the first time in several months, you felt like things might be okay.
It was almost the end of your shift when you saw them. They were standing in the aisle you were about to turn down to dust, but you pulled back as soon as their scents hit you and hid yourself behind the end of the row of shelves. Sure, those scents could belong to anyone. Everyone's scent was unique, but lots of people shared general scents. You were hardly the only apple scented omega in the world. But the combination of chestnut and pine was too familiar. It had layered the pack's house and mingled in a uniquely homey way. You were certain that it was Seokjin and one of his other alphas. You'd never gotten his name. You'd never even spoken to him or looked at him directly. For good reason, too. He was absolutely massive, standing at least a foot over you. One look at his hands and you knew that he could kill you if you upset him. Seokjin was tall and broad as well, and Taehyung was not much smaller at all, but for some reason it was the unnamed one that terrified you most. The two of them together were downright terrifying, and your brain did a good job of reminding you of that every time your inner voice started longing for Yoongi or Jimin or Hoseok.
You decided to turn back the way you came before they could smell you, too. You could hide in your custodian's closet for the next twenty minutes of your shift. It was Saturday and the library would be closed tomorrow. A little dust could wait until Monday morning.
You emerged from the closet at the end of your shift, having changed out of your cleaning uniform and into jeans and Yoongi's hoodie. It didn't smell like him anymore, but you were reminded of his scent every time you used the citrus scented cleaner for the floors. It was a mockery of his natural smell, but it brought him to mind nonetheless. Few scents have been imprinted into your brain as deeply as that one. There was a card in the front pocket of the hoodie, just a small rectangle with a name and contact information printed on it and Jimin's neat, careful numbers written on the back. The cardstock had lost its stiffness after the hours you've spent clutching it, the corners were tearing from all the worrying of your fingernails, like they were doing now.
Go catch them, she whispered in your head as you watched two tall, broad sets of shoulders walk through the doors of the library.
You know what Seokjin will do to you.Â
You don't know. Yoongi wouldn't let him.
Round and round they went again, never giving you a moment's peace.Â
Please call Jimin.
You walked toward the information desk where Maria sat at her computer, next to the phone.
"All done for today, Y/N?" Maria asked with a pleasant smile. You nodded.
"Can I use your phone to make a call? Mine was stolen. It's local."
"Yeah, of course. Just dial nine to call out," she said as she turned the telephone toward you.
This is a bad idea.
You picked up the receiver and pulled out the card from your pocket. You dialed nine, then five, and then you froze. A scent filled your nose, one that you hadn't smelled in many years. One you thought you'd never smell again. It was spearmint stronger than any gum or mouthwash. His scent was always so potent, you were amazed your sap parents couldn't smell it. How could they have thought he was one of them? You turned to look for him, but he saw you first.
"Y/N?"
"Eli?" You asked, astonished. You couldn't have expected to see him in this city.Â
"What are you doing here?" He wondered, stepping close to you. For a moment you thought he might try to hug you, but you were never like that with your adopted brother. You hadn't seen him since you were thrown out of your parents house, and you always figured it was best that way.Â
The years between his presentation and yours had been tense. You could smell him as soon as his scent started to develop. It was the first sign you had that you wouldn't turn out sap like they said you mightâtruthfully, your average sapiens don't understand the genetics of cross-breeding that well. And of course he was terrified of you giving away his secret, no matter how vehemently you vowed that you wouldn't. You only ever hoped you could be as lucky as him. To be a beta and to go undetected for as long as possible. But it didn't work out like that for you, and all these years you might have resented him a bit for that.Â
"I work here," you confessed, looking around as people went about their business in the library. Maria looked to be paying you no mind. "I just finished. What brings you here?"Â
"Just returning some books. Are you free?"
You finally placed the receiver back in its cradle and removed your hand. "Yeah, what did you have in mind?"
"Are you hungry?" Eli asked. You were and you weren't. On the one hand you hadn't eaten yet that day, but on the other, your stomach was twisted in its usual knots. You nodded anyway.
Eli took you to a diner close by and promised he was paying so you could order anything you wanted. You ordered a cheese burger to try to pack in as many calories as you could in one meal.Â
"Do you still talk to them?" You asked quietly after you'd run out of small talk. Eli held your gaze for a moment before he answered.
"Sometimes," he admitted. "It's not like they were ever big talkers. But they know I'm here and about my job, my fiance."
"Fiance?"
"Yeah. We're planning to get married next year." You nodded thoughtfully. "She's sap, and she doesn't know about me," he admitted, unprovoked. You looked him deeply in the eyes before you spoke. You couldn't help feeling jealous of what that must be like, to be able to deny yourself so easily.
"How is that going?"Â
"Pretty well. It's not a problem," he said, but it didn't seem to ring true on his face.
"What about you? You work at the library?"
"I clean there. I just started this month." You shifted uneasily in your chair, a little because you were uncomfortably full but also because he had been talking about himself most of the time and how he was turning the attention on you, and that never felt like a good thing.
"Oh, nice. Your pack lets you work?"Â
His question caught you off guard because for one thing, you were surprised that he assumed you had a pack. For someone who was denying who they were to their most intimate partner, he sure did jump to the conclusion that you wouldn't be. But you didn't appreciate the fact that he thought you needed permission to work. For some reason you couldn't really understand, you said, "yeah."
"That's interesting. You don't meet a lot of omegas out there working in public. Seems like most alphas like to keep them locked up at home."
You wanted to tell him he had no idea what he was talking about. As far as you could tell, Eli has less experience with Lykos culture than you did. What did he know about alpha and omega dynamics? But you didn't bother. "Well, my alpha isn't like that."
Eli brushed off his hands as he finished his fries. "That's good. Let me take you home. I'd like to meet them."
You didn't know the address of the pack's house, but you remembered how to get there from the library, and you were able to direct him there without much trouble.Â
"It's that blue one up there," you told him when he turned onto the right street.
"This one?" Eli asked with a raised eyebrow, seeing what you did at the same time: a for sale sign with a triumphant red 'SOLD' sign sitting atop it. You swallowed thickly and felt your eyes begin to burn.
See, all these weeks of torturing yourself with indecision, and they didn't want you anyway. You never listen to me.
You could feel Eli's eyes on you, waiting for an explanation, so you cleared your throat. "I don't actually live here. I stayed here for a little bit, with a pack, but I guess they've moved on."
"Your pack left you?" He asked incredulously.
You shook your head, "they aren't actually my pack. They just took care of me for a few days when I was sick. It was a while ago. I just didn't want to tell you where I'm really staying, so I lied."
"What were you gonna do if they were here and I asked to meet them?" Eli smirked and you shrugged.
"Hope they'd play along until you left."
"And then what?"
And then ask if I could stay.
Idiot.
"I don't know," you admitted. You had no idea what you were going to do if you saw them. You didn't know what you would have said if you'd called Jimin and he'd answered earlier.
"You still haven't learned to think ahead, have you, Y/N?" Eli sighs and puts the car back in drive. "So, where are you staying?"Â
You sit up straighter in your seat and reach for the door. "It's fine. You can leave me here. I've wasted enough of your time tonight."
"Don't worry about it. Just tell me where to go."
You directed Eli downtown to the shelter, only for him to have the reaction you had feared. You moved quickly to get out of his car but his hand on your arm stopped you.
"Y/N, why are you staying here?" His voice was filled with shock.
"I'm just going through a little rough patch. I'll be back on my feet soon. I have a job. I just need time," you rushed out all your defenses.
"Do you need money?"Â
"No! God, I don't want your money."
"Y/N, you can't stay here. I've heard awful things about this place."
"Well, it's better than the street, or some predator."
"You can do better than this."
"I'm trying, okay! You think I like this? I don't. But what's it to you anyway! We meet randomly after five years and you're suddenly an over protective big brother? Do you think my life has been easy?" You've started to shake and you knew you were getting hysterical, but you didn't need his opinion on things he would never understand.
"Y/N, I know things haven't been easy for you. Let me help," he offered softly.
"How can you possibly help me?" You sat in the passenger seat with your arms crossed, looking every bit his teenage sister.
Eli swallowed before he spoke. "Come stay at my place for a bit."
"At your place?" He nodded. "What about your fiance? Doesn't she hate Lykos?"
"I never said she hated them."
"Us."
"Us. She just had some bad experiences with some alphas when she was younger. She doesn't really like to be around our kind," he explained, as if that made it better.
"Doesn't it make you feel crazy to have to pretend all the time?"
Eli shrugged. "I'm used to itâŠwith our parents. They still don't know about me. It's not that hard, really. You can pretend for a little bit. You can get heat suppressants or whatever."
You know he's right.
You leaned your head back against the headrest and closed your eyes.
I don't want to pretend anymore.
What's so great about being the real you?
I'm gonna callâ
If you were going to call him you would have by now and besides, they literally gave you a sign. It was all a lie. Just go with Eli.Â
You sighed. "I have some stuff inside. If I leave it, they'll throw it out."
"I'll wait," Eli said and let you get out of the car.Â
Yoongi and Jimin arrived at the new house just as Hoseok was finishing dinner preparations. Taehyung had set the table for seven, and for the first time in weeks it felt complete. No one would hold it against Yoongi for needing space, or for doing what he needed to do in hopes of bringing you into their pack, but that didn't mean they hadn't missed him and Jimin like crazy.
And it wasn't as though they hadn't seen each other at all. Taehyung had driven Hoseok back to the old house on many occasions, to bring his boys food or to take their laundry, no matter how many times Yoongi insisted they could go to the laundromat. He couldn't bear the thought of it. Jungkook stopped by after work anytime he didn't have a night shift. Namjoon and Jin had come over a few evenings when Yoongi was working so that Jimin wouldn't feel lonely.
It was strange for Jimin to spend time alone. He'd spent most of his adolescence surrounded by others and then the last four years in a pack house where someone was always home. In fact, the point in his life when he was the most alone was right before he met Yoongi and the others, and moving in with them had been a huge relief. Jimin hadn't been exactly lonely during those weeks when it was just him and Yoongi, but the quiet was hard to get used to, and the noise that surrounded their return was welcomed and familiar.
No one was going to admit it, because they were too happy to be back together again, but the time apart hadn't been the worst thing in the world. It had given them space to work on bonds that they had not paid as much attention to as maybe they should have. Seokjin and Namjoon had gone on several dates, just the two of them, the pack leader letting his mate take him to every museum in town and casual trips to the library. Jin hadn't even realized how much he was neglecting the second alpha in his pack, nor how much he had truly missed quality time with him. As soon as the realization hit him, he made a heartfelt apology to Namjoon for focusing too much attention on Hoseok and their plans. Of course, Namjoon forgave him easily. He always would.
Namjoon couldn't really put it into words, but his alpha status had never sat quite right with him until he met Seokjin. Sure, he was large and strong and everything an alpha should be on the outside, but he'd never felt the stereotypical aggression or need for control that alphas were known for. This had always felt like a character flaw in himself until he met Jin, who simultaneously had shown him that being an alpha didn't mean he had to be an asshole, and who was also willing to take on the burden of control that Namjoon rejected. When he met Jin, he could just be himself, and for that he would always love him above all others.
Hoseok, too, had used his time wisely in getting more in touch with the feelings of his younger packmates. The fact that he hadn't realized how insecure Taehyung had been feeling and how often Jungkook had been sleeping outside of the nest ate at him constantly. Although he and Tae had been companions at home for years now, Hoseok made a concerted effort to spend more quality time with him, to ask him his opinions on every detail of the new house, not only so he would feel included and welcome or because of his artistic eye but because of the boxy grin Tae gave him every time gave him immeasurable happiness.
Jungkook got the lion's share of Hoseok's attention whenever he got home from work, whether it was 5 pm or 5 am. It always involved lots of touching and scent marking, although if Jungkook came home smelling like lavender and oranges, Hoseok spent considerable more focus on getting those smells onto his own body. If he had a hard time getting Jungkook to smile and laugh once he was in the nest, Hoseok would gently coax him into talking so he could comfort the beta.Â
On the whole, everyone in the new house was feeling much better than they had a month or even months ago, except for the fact that two integral parts of their lives were missing. It didn't feel the same as it did before they met Yoongi and Jimin. They had been irreversibly changed. And those two hadn't quite seemed to benefit as much from the separation as the rest.
Jimin squealed and giggled as Jungkook lifted him off the ground and spun him around. "Put me down, Kookie!"
"Never," the other beta mumbled into his shoulder. "I missed you too much."
"I saw you two days ago," Jimin reminded him.
"That's two days too long."
Yoongi couldn't help smiling at the betas as they greeted each other. It warmed his heart to see how little changed between them as Jungkook began to scent mark Jimin until he smelled like something fresh out of the dryer.
"I'm glad you're back," Hoseok said as he cupped Yoongi's smiling cheek in his hand. His heart ached when he watched the man's smile diminish.
"Yeah, I missed you guys," Yoongi admitted, but somehow the omega could tell that longing for his pack wasn't the dominant feeling in his heart at that moment.
"Let's eat dinner, and then I'll show you around the rest of the house," Hoseok encouraged and Yoongi nodded, setting down his bag before going to the table.
"You made kimchi-jjigae?" Jimin asked before taking a seat.
"I wanted to do something special, so I made your favorite to welcome you home," hoseok shrugged.
Jimin walked over and put his arms around the omega in a tight hug. "I love you, hyung."
"I love you, too, Jiminie," he smiled into the man's soft hair. Yoongi watched with a smile of his own. Nothing was as nice as watching Jimin get doted on the way he deserved, and he felt a pang of guilt for having kept the man to himself for so long. Yoongi had heaped tons of love and attention on him during their time alone, but Jimin always deserved more. He was sure he'd feel the same way about you ifâ Yoongi cut off his own thoughts. He wasn't going to go there anymore. He needed to give up for the sake of his pack, and he knew it. It wouldn't be easy, but he had to. He couldn't let himself believe in anything as fickle as fate to bring you to him.
After they'd all eaten until they were stuffed, Hoseok led Yoongi upstairs by the hand.Â
"That's the master bedroom," he pointed out as they passed it by. "This is the room we hope will be the nursery," he said walking by the middle room on the second floor. Yoongi gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. "And this room is for your little pup."
Yoongi swallowed thickly as he walked into the room. The walls had been painted a serene shade of sea foam green and the mattress was fitted with cream colored bedding.
"I didn't think she was a pink kind of girl. Or at least I wasn't sure, so Taehyung suggested this color might be soothing for her. What do you think?"
"You guys worked so hard on this." Yoongi ran his fingers down the gauzy cream curtains. "It's great, Hobi, but," Yoongi sighed as he sat on the edge of the bed. "She's not coming."
Hoseok frowned and settled himself atop Yoongi's lap. The alpha wrapped his arms around his waist naturally to hold him in place as he had so many times. "She hasn't come yet. But that doesn't mean she won't. I know you're feeling hopeless, but you need to have a little faith."
Yoongi looked up at him with weary eyes. "How can you be so positive about it?"
"I might be a tad bit more objective about it than you are," Hoseok smiled as he leaned into him.Â
"Every minute feels like an eternity," Yoongi whispered.
"I really think she might be your fated mate," Hoseok giggled.
"Do you actually believe in that stuff?"
The omega shrugged. "I don't know. I don't think I've ever met any, but as you know, I don't get out much. I only know stories. Do you have a better explanation for it?"
Yoongi thought quietly for a moment, opening and closing his mouth as he searched for the right words, but he thought maybe they didn't exist. "All I know is it feels wrong to know that she's out thereâŠin the worldâŠand I'm not there to protect her."
Hoseok gently knocked their heads together. "Sounds like fated mates to me." Yoongi rolled his eyes playfully. "Don't give up yet, Yoon. Jimin and Jungkook found her by chance, but that doesn't mean it wasn't meant to be. When the time comes, you'll be in the right place at the right time, too."
"I hate the feeling that I won't be there before something terrible happens."
Hoseok clicked his tongue at the man. "You're so paranoid. Lighten up. She's coming! And when she does, this room will be her home. Won't that be nice?"
Yoongi smiled, giving into Hobi's relentless optimism. "It will be perfect."
Eli drove you to a stylish looking apartment building on the other side of town. It was obvious the moment he took you inside the apartment that he hadn't used the time while you were gathering your things to warn his fiance that you were coming. A tall blonde came quickly toward the door wearing an expression you couldn't quite define but leaned towards angry.
"Babe, where were you? I just got home and you weren't here. What's going on?" She asked as her eyes fell on you and even you could feel yourself shrink under her sharp eyes.
Eli leaned in to kiss her cheek. "I'm sorry, baby. I should have called. But I ran into my sister. You remember, I told you about Y/N."Â
"Not really," she admitted with a tight smile as your brother stepped aside and she got a good look at you. "I thought she ran away," she whispered.
"Yeah, ran away, not died," he whispered back. You weren't sure if they knew you could hear them or they didn't care but you felt smaller and smaller by the second. "She lives in the city now, and she needs a place to stay," he said loud enough for you to hear, although she clearly wished he wouldn't.
"Can I talk to you for a minute, Eli?" She asked with the same tight smile, and it occurred to you that you didn't know her name. Had you forgotten it, or had he simply not mentioned it to you before at the restaurant?
"We'll be right back, Y/N," Eli nodded.
Whatever room they moved to was not far enough away or sound proof enough to keep their conversation from your ears.
"What the hell? You can't bring random girls to our home, Eli!"
"She's not some random girl. She's my sister. She has a difficult situation right now, am I not supposed to help her?"
"Doesn't that seem a little convenient to you? That your long lost sister suddenly finds you when she's fallen on hard times?"
"What are you even insinuating? I'm the one that ran into her at her work."
"I just think it's fishy. And you never talk about her. I think you've mentioned her twice the whole time we've been together, so what's with the big brother act?"
"I just feel bad, okay? Our parents weren't easy on her. I just want to help her out for once."
A long pause settled between them.
"Please. Just a couple weeks, three tops, until I can find her a place to live."
"Did she ask you for money?"
"No. She didn't even ask if she could stay here. But her other situation wasn't safe."
"Jesus. Are you sure she's even your sister? Hasn't it been like ten years? She still looks like a teenager."
"She's just small. It's her, trust me. Everything will be fine."
"Fine. But three weeks and not a day more, Eli."
You turned toward the door to leave. You didn't want to be an inconvenience, much less cause strife in their relationship. He'd already lied to her about you enough, saying that you ran away instead of telling her how and why you were thrown out of your home. Every moment you spent there would only heap more lies up between them. You didn't know what he was thinking of bringing you here, but he was misguided.
"Y/N," he spoke just as you reached for the door knob. "Everything is fine. Come, I'll show you the guest room."
There was always something that made your skin itch about a 'guest room.' Maybe it was just that you never needed it spelled out for you that you held a place of impermanence no matter where you went. You didn't belong. You wouldn't be staying long. These were things you knew without needing them codified in words.Â
"There are fresh sheets in this closet," she told you, making a reappearance with a somewhat more believable smile on her face. "I would have made it up for you if I had some warning."
"That's fine. I can make it myself," you assured her quietly. "I'm sorry, I forgot your name."
She sighed quietly. "I'm Kate. There are extra blankets in there as well in case you get cold."
"Thanks, Kate," you murmured before she turned to leave.
"Get some rest, Y/N. We'll talk in the morning," Eli said before he closed the bedroom door and you were alone.
The following day, Kate seemed to find reasons to be out of the house all day. You did your best to have as little contact with Eli as possible. I'm spite of his recent charity in bringing you here, you had never really been that close. The years between you and the resentment you felt were high barriers. Besides, you'd become too suspicious of kindness in your life to truly trust him.Â
During the week, you returned to work, and even though he offered to drive you and pick you up, you insisted on taking the bus across town, if for no other reason than that it extended the time you were out of their home. When you were there, you cooked and cleaned. It was the only way you knew how to do penance for your ever inconvenient existence, the only payment of a perpetually uninvited guest. And when she realized how quiet and clean you were, Kate did thaw toward you, if only slightly.Â
The main benefit of staying at their apartment was the opportunity to get quality sleep. It was quiet, and you were spared the frequent interruptions that occured in the shelter, as well as the constant anxiety of being around so many strangers and strong smells. Among the many practices that made the True Life Ministry different from other shelters was that they didn't separate you by secondary gender, only by male and female, so the threat of alphas was ever present. Although behavior was strictly monitored, you never felt entirely safe.
There was one thought that continued to itch in your brain as you laid on the bed and tried to sleep. It was still pretty early in the evening, but you'd had a pretty rotten day. One of the Lykos who frequently passed her days in the library had decided to make you an object of interest today, whiling away the afternoon throwing trash at you every time you came near where she sat in the computer lab while you emptied the bins or cleaned a table. Eventually, one of the librarians asked the alpha to leave, but it had already soured your mood. You cooked and ate dinner silently before turning in early, and even Kate was a little concerned by the way you kept your head hung low and didn't look at either of them even once.Â
Now, the only comfort you could think of was sitting in the closet mere feet from your bed.
The blue and white striped blanket is so soft. At least start there.
You know you're not supposed to do that.
Hoseok said it was good for me and it was so nice when he did it.
You aren't Hoseok. You're barely even a fucking omega. You know it never leads to good things for you.
Please. Just a little nest. I need it. Just for a little while. Please.
You sat up in bed and stared at the closet door. There were several very soft blankets in there going unused. Kate did say you could use them.
She said if you got cold. You're not cold. You're fine.
"What's it going to hurt?" You whispered to yourself.
Do you really have to ask? Remember the first time?Â
You pulled back the quilt laying on top of you and scooted off the edge of the bed. Creeping to the door, you opened it slowly.
You don't even know how to build a fucking nest. Don't even try.
It's not that hard. Start with the white one.
Eli told you to pretend. What if they find you acting like an animal?
For once you ignored the harsh whispers in your head and followed the smaller voice's instructions. You laid the soft white blanket out as a base, then bunched up two knitted blankets to make a perimeter. You didn't need a very big nest. You were so small. Finally you fluffed the striped throw blanket across the top before climbing into the nest. For once, all your voices quieted as you wiggled your body around, finding the perfect spot for you that made you feel warm and fuzzy and protected. All the world fell away as you nuzzled your face against the fluffy white blanket beneath you. You might have been falling asleep, or maybe just falling within yourself to a quiet, soft place you can only really remember going to when you were in Hoseok's nest last month. You'd never managed to get there with your former pack, where they mocked you for your pathetic attempts at a nest until you gave up altogether.Â
Kate, despite her previous coldness toward you, could tell there was something wrong with you. She could tell you were still awake by the soft, albeit strange noises coming from the guest room, and decided to check on you to see if there was anything you needed. When you didn't answer her knocks, she decided to open the door anyway. It was her home after all, right? When she turned on the light, she didn't expect to see you lift your head from a pile of blankets, hair a static mess and pupils blown wide. You whimpered at the bright light.
"What are you doing?" She asked, her tone a mixture of shock and suspicion. "What's going on? Eli?" She called loudly.
You stared at her in confusion until he came to the doorway. "What?"
Kate pointed a finger at you. "What the hell is she doing?"
Eli cursed under her breath as he walked toward you on the bed. He took your face in his hands. "Wake up, Y/N. Snap out of it!" He muttered.Â
"Is sheâŠis she one of them?" She asked, pitched raised. You whimpered again.
"Damn it, Y/N," Eli groaned. "I didn't know."
"What do you mean? Are you one of them too?"
"No. No! She's adopted. You know that. My parents thought that's why she ran away, but I didn't know for sure," Eli lied.
"Fuck, Eli. You know how I feel about those...things," Kate cringed.
"Baby, please. I'm sure she's harmless." Eli approached her with open palms, but she only backed out of the room.Â
"Get her the fuck out of my house. Right now!" She shouted.Â
Eli looked between the two of you anxiously. He stepped closer to you once again and felt his heart clench at the desperately scared look in your wide, vulnerable eyes. "I'm sorry, Y/N, but you have to go."
You whined and pressed yourself closer to the blankets, as if they would protect you. Eli sighed. You weren't difficult to pick up and pluck out of your nest. You'd lost whole pounds since your last heat.
"I'm sorry Yn," he muttered as he carried you down the hallway toward the door.
"Make sure she's out of the building," Kate grumbled as he went by her holding the door open.
Eli nodded and carried you into the elevator before he set you on unsteady feet. "You couldn't fucking hold it together could you?"
Your brain was scrambling to come back online, but you didn't have words yet. Fucking stupid omega brain.
"I swear to God if you ruined this for me," he muttered. You wished you could tell him what I fucking fake he was, but your tongue was glued to the top of your mouth. The elevator reached the lobby and Eli walked you outside. "Sorry, Y/N," he told you once more before he turned to go back inside. "Have a nice life."
The night air was chilly with that feeling it might rain at any second. You thanked yourself for wearing Yoongi's hoodie to bed and turned to walk in an unknown direction.
We fucking told you so. You never fucking listen.
Yoongi wasn't the only one who spent his nights on duty feeling like the next call was going to be the one he dreaded most. Rainy nights always filled Jungkook with a specific kind of dread. It was the kind of night that led to avoidable accidents, which is what he thought had happened when he and his partner stopped their patrol car behind a parked car in the middle of a narrow one way street. The short whoop of the police cruiser when they came to a stop got the attention of the driver of the car, who turned and quickly began shouting at Jungkook as soon as he opened the passenger side door.
"It wasn't my fault, officer! She pushed him in front of my car! There wasn't anything I could do!" The woman screamed hysterically.
"Calm down, ma'am," Jungkook's partner, Xavier, said cautiously before he leaned into his walkie talkie and requested back up.Â
Meanwhile Jungkook walked around the passenger side of his vehicle and sniffed the air. The falling rain made it harder to smell the scents around him, but he managed to pick up a few things. The sour fear coming from the Sap woman, smoky sage, and blood. When he reached the front of the car, he could tell those last two scents came from the alpha lying unconscious in the road, blood flowing from his head to mix with the engine oil and rain water on the sleek blacktop. He knelt down when he got closer and spoke into his own radio to call for an ambulance. And then he smelled it. The apple cider vinegar that telegraphed your fear.Â
No matter what Jin and Hoseok said, Yoongi wouldn't attribute the foreboding and acute anxiety he felt tonight to the possibility of fated mates. He felt nervous every night he sat in the ambulance waiting for the next call, hoping it wouldn't be your body that was injured. Tonight was rainy and dark and that always meant car accidents. Yoongi was just anticipating what anyone in his line of work would do on a night like tonight. Â
"Do you think it will be her this time?" His coworker asked with casual cruelty as Yoongi drove to the scene of an accident.Â
"Shut up," he muttered in reply.
"Don't be so sensitive. I thought alphas like you would be able to take a joke," the Sap teased.
"It's not a fucking joke." Yoongi barely held back a growl.
"Relax. You're not the first EMT to spend the night driving around looking for someone they love in every scene. We all go through it at some point. It's never them.*
But that was where he was wrong.
Yoongi freely admitted that he'd been a paranoid mess the last month, scanning every face at every site for you. But he had never imagined your smell, so he knew he wasn't imagining it now. It filled his senses the moment he opened the door of the ambulance. He could smell the blood, too, but he honed in on your scent only. He could focus on nothing else.
You were sitting on the curb between the bumpers of two parked cars with your head between your knees, but Yoongi didn't need to see your face to know it was you. Only you could be so small and fragile, even under the shock blanket Jungkook had the good sense to put over you. He wanted to scoop you up and get you out of the rain. The fact that Jungkook was standing protectively in front of you lessened his panic by a fraction.
"Is she hurt?" Yoongi asked, kneeling in front of you. "Y/N, are you okay?"Â
You didn't respond, simply continued to rock back and forth with your hands clasped over your head.Â
"She's not injured. She's just in shock. She hasn't said much," Jungkook told him.
Yoongi reached forward to touch your chin. "Look at me, princess. Let me see if you're okay."
When you lifted your eyes to his, you looked as terrified as you smelled. "Alpha? Is he dead?" You asked painfully.
"Yoongi, over here!" His partner called from the road. The alpha didn't take his eyes off you. How could he leave you like this? "Yoongi!"
"Go on, hyung. Do your job. I'll take care of her. I won't let her out of my sight. I promise."
Yoongi's eyes remained locked on yours for a moment longer. You had asked him only one thing, and if getting you reassurance was all he could do then that's what he would do. "I'll go check on him. Everything will be okay, princess. Wait here." He tried his best to sound reassuring as he stroked your wet hair and you leaned into his touch before he tore himself away to go help the alpha bleeding out on the asphalt.Â
His sage scent faded as life drained from him, but the other EMT was applying pressure to his head wound, so he wasn't gone yet. Yoongi went into autopilot to help his partner stabilize the patient, but he was desperate to know what had happened and how you had been involved. Should he even be saving this man? Who was he to you?Â
They managed to get the man onto the stretcher and into the ambulance while he still clung to life without Yoongi having much idea at all of what he was doing. He stayed in the back with the patient while his partner drove, otherwise Yoongi would never be able to make himself leave without you.
"Y/N, I'm taking you to the police station," Jungkook told you after the ambulance had left and another police officer had taken the driver of the car away.Â
Without any other acknowledgement, you stood, letting the shock blanket fall from your shoulders as you turned your back on Jungkook and placed your hands behind your back.
Jungkook frowned, "you're not under arrest, Y/N. I'm just taking you to the station to give a statement and wait for someone to come get you."
You turned to look at him confusedly. "No one will come for me."
Jungkook smiled sadly. "Yoongi will come. Let's go."
At the station, Jungkook sat you next to his desk in the bullpen and went to go get you a warm drink. He placed a paper cup of hot tea in your hands, which you took without looking at it or him, but just stared blankly ahead.
"Y/N, can you tell me what happened before the accident?" Jungkook asked, fingers poised over his keyboard.
"Eli threw me out."
"What?"
"Was walking. Was raining butâŠnowhere to go." You took a sip of the too hot tea to ease the dryness of your throat. "Smelled him first. Hate that smell. So I walked faster, but he's bigger, faster. He caught me. Grabbed my arm."
"Did he hurt your arm?" Jungkook asked. You honestly didn't know. You felt numb all over, just like you had since you'd smelled the burning sage earlier. Setting down the small cup, you pulled up the sleeve of Yoongi's hoodie to reveal the bruises that were blossoming along your forearm. "Shit," Jungkook muttered. "We'll take pictures in a minute. What happened next?"Â
"We argued."
"About what?"
"Wanted me to come with him. Didn't want to."
Jungkook studied your face cautiously. "Why did he want you to come with him?"Â
You shrugged. "Same as always. Wanted to breed me."
"Is that Eli?" He questioned.
You shook your head. "Eli is my brother."
Jungkook nodded. "But you know that man."
You nodded dumbly. "My alpha."
Jungkook felt his stomach turn over and over. Knowing what little he did about your experience with your past alpha, your barely-there behavior made more sense.
"What happened when you argued?"
You swallowed. "I tried to get away, to get him off. He wouldn't let go, so IâI pushed him and he slipped. He fell into the street and then the car was there."
"Did you see the car before you pushed him?" Maybe Jungkook shouldn't have asked. He wasn't formally interrogating you. Something in him just wanted to know.
You shook your head. "Its lights weren't on. Dark and wet. Couldn't see behind him."
Jungkook swallowed thickly and turned his attention to his screen to finish entering the information you had given him.
"Did I kill him?" You asked blankly, making Jungkook pause to look at you.
"He was still alive when they left the scene. Even if anyone is at fault, we would first look at the driver of the car. You aren't in any trouble right now, Y/N." You nodded in understanding. "For now, it's probably best if you stay quiet."
You were sure time passed, although you didn't feel it. Jungkook went and came back, took photos of the bruises on your arm and brought you a fresh drink. The world continued to turn because it had never stopped for any of your crises, big or small, why would it now? It might have been hours or minutes. You couldn't tell. Everything around you was blocked out until you felt a cold breeze sweep through the station carrying a sharp citrus scent.
Alpha.
Without any thought, you found yourself on your feet. As if acting on their own, they shuffled past the rows of desks. There was a wall and gate separating the back part of the station from the public entry, but you pushed past them until you could see Yoongi. His black hair dripped rainwater onto his cheeks, and he pushed the wet strands back. You couldn't hear what he was asking the officer at the desk, but the words went silent when he turned toward you. Without an invitation you found yourself pressed against his chest, your arms wrapping around his waist.
It took him half a second to respond, encircling you in his own strong arms and holding you to him. "It's alright," he whispered.
You nuzzled your forehead against his chest and murmured back, "Alpha."
I hope the end of this roller coaster made up for the journey. I promise it's going to get better now. Thank you for sticking it out. Please tell me what you've liked in this chapter or any time up until now, and what you're looking forward to or hoping for going forward. Here's a Yoongi, you've earned it.

Hi, this anon againđ
haven't slept yet again...it's 6 amđ. I just love the idea that Dazai with all his godlike intelligence is the kind of guy to see immediately what troubles or struggles his significant other has with themselves or in general.
If you have trauma he will immediately catch on, self esteem issues? Immediately caught on, mommy or daddy issues? People pleaser? He knows it, and many other things, he will immediately figure it out as you both date.
He'll probably even do little things that you'd think he doesn't understand how much it means to you, like validating you, making sure you always have a specific comfort of yours at hand, you'd think he just does it because he saw that you liked it, but it was because he knew what it would do for you, what it makes you feel.
Dazai sees you and he doesn't just see your traumas and things you struggle with of course, he first sees someone he loves unconditionally. Dazai knows you love him with all your heart especially after knowing about his past.
Dazai will tell if you're sensitive, if you're uncomfortable with loud noises, if you get emotional about a lot of things, if you're lonely around people, if you're masking your real personality around other people, if you've only heard criticism instead of any praise, if you've been undermined and seen as a second choice, Dazai will know.
And he will show you from the moment he picks up on everything, that you're never gonna feel like that again as long as he's there, and he will always be there. He will validate everything you always wanted to be validated. Dazai from the Port to ADA is very much "gun is love, gun is life" to "what is gun, what is this metal thing that can hurt another human being!?" An exaggeration of course but that's how he probably would be even though he's joking, but the second someone tried to mess with you, suddenly every training he had in the Port comes back and he's immediately shown to be this incredibly intimidating and ruthless man to anyone who tries hurt you.
Have a beautiful forever Hunđđ„ș I know you said in the last message you've had a rough time and I genuinely hope you're doing better đ„șđ a reminder that you're so amazing and you deserve the best, you deserve to be happy and i wish you the uttermost happiness and love and good health, you're still so incredibly young, you have so much time to accomplish everything or anything you want, you're doing well, get some sun, hydrate yourself, sleep the best you can(because I know sometimes we don't always get enough sleep) and eat wellđđ„ș
I'll leave these emojis for now so you'll know it's me next timeđ

HELLOOOOO my sweet đ„čđ
i'm so sorry i have such a late reply! i've been working on some writing and also quite literally irl so i'm just trying to catch up. you are amazing and i'm wishing u the best of health and happiness right back :') love is all we rlly have in this world. things are a lot better lately on my end and i hope you've been able to sleep comfortably even if it takes u a while! MWAH.
and also. i just rlly wanted to indulge those lil things you said about dazai because they are sooooooooo true. sooooo fucking valid. GUN IS LOVE GUN IS LIFE TOOK ME OUTTTT LMAO i actually love the way u talk abt dazai's highly intuitive side, it's quite literally what makes him so compelling as is. and in a relationship/partnership? oh it's a goddamn dream. he's like a hawk watching and registering your every mood fluctuation and the cause of it, tryinf to see how he can rectify it immediately. and i also FIRMLY believe he will use any and all past PM training to facilitate ur happiness should he ever need to. he'll be like:
"Hey, take five. You've been at it for hours now and frankly, it's boring watching you work."
"I can't, I'm so behind on reports and I'm helping out with the agency holiday party, I also need to-"
Dazai's eyes narrow, and shakes his head rapidly. Mission accepted, he thinks. He knows what you need, and if you won't cater to your needs, he'll have to just do it himself. He lives to see you at ease, because you deserve the entire world. You will not, under any circumstances, be stressed under his watchful eye... And he also just really wants an excuse to cuddle later without having to hear about dumb things like work. It's a win-win, and you don't have a choice! He sighs, and puts on his little performance.
".. You expect me, the great Osamu Dazai, to simply watch as I witness my favorite detective work themself to the bone?! Absolutely not! I refuse. Come, we're going to the cafe downstairs."
You groan as he pulls you, smiling in reluctance.
"Dazaiiii, i'm serious.. plus, don't you have like, a huge running tab there?"
He flashes you a sly smirk and a wink.
"That's why I have you, silly! Your philanthropic and generous heart is willing to treat me as your penance for being so stubborn. How noble of you. You really shouldn't have."
You roll your eyes, sighing deeply as you zoom out of the agency with him.
"The waitress there wants to kill you, you know."
You mutter under your breath with a playful smile. Dazai gasps dramatically and looks back at you, still holding you by the arm, tighening just a smidge.
"Oh, goodness! I'm quaking. well thank god i'm bringing you, my precious little scapegoat~"
Despite your feigned annoyance, your cheeks redden, and it's hard not to become endeared with how relentless he is in his pursuits to distract you. what a slack off, you want to kiss his stupid face until he shuts up. You might just have to.
"You're the worst, Dazai."
"Mm, what a weird way to say 'I love you.' I'll take it."
this is a silly little thing, but basically overly observant and on the case Dazai he just NEEDS to make you the happiest whether you like it or not!
i love u, mwah :')

(Sorry if I have bad English, I'm from Spain.)
I'm super hyperfixated on the original managers, so I have 2 questions.
1. In Dialtown, Tango/Terrence says no one called him Tango before. Assuming that in the DSaF universe he also liked that nickname, did any of the other original managers call him Tango or not?
2. A headcanon I've seen in the DSaF fandom is that Abel hated everyone BUT the real Scott Cawthon, and that Scott was the only one that tolerated Abel (some ppl even ship them). Is that close to canon? Or the og Scott Cawthon also hated Abel? I really want to know what they thought about each other.
Btw, I really love your games, I've played the DSaF trilogy many times, and the Dialtown demo (I haven't played the full version of Dialtown yet, but I've seen gameplays and I'll buy it for my birthday), thank you for making 4 incredible games <3
I don't answer many DSaF questions these days, but this one's interesting so here goes:
1)Tango's nickname is a DT invention as far as I remember. If he preferred the name in DSaF's universe, Harry would've used it for sure, given how much he liked Terrence and since he's literally using a name he doesn't believe is really 'his' because it makes him feel better. He of all people would understand.
2)Yeah, that's a pretty good way of stating it, but there's a little more nuance to it that explains a little bit more about Abel/Joe's rift.
Basically, the original Scott Cawthon was a unifying figure. He got on with every single one of the original managers and they all thought the world of him. The Phone Guy process was started in an attempt to recreate him by Abel (and the other managers at first) and you gotta consider why they'd all want to do that. He was the glue that held the group together, the only manager liked by everyone else there without exception, someone who could defuse tension and resolve conflicts amicably.
It's true that he had the most patience for Abel and never badmouthed Abel to the other managers and even defended him earnestly, knowing Abel the best of the other managers and knowing some of Abel's early life and where he came from, while the others were more willing to honestly discuss Abel's short fuse and occasionally mean nature (even Terrence to some extent!) This led Abel to develop more of a bond with him than the other managers and somewhat distrust the others.
While Abel was essentially Scott's number 2, as time went on, Joe became more and more integral to the running of their budding company, since he was a skilled accountant and managed to balance the books despite Scott's somewhat reckless spending at times (he was overgenerous to the point where it sometimes led to financial trouble for the company, a stark contrast to what Freddy's became later.) Since Joe was so blunt (and Abel's biggest critic), Abel was incredibly jealous and insecure that if the trend continued, Joe would supplant him.
This also explains why Abel was so willing to toss his other managers into the 'machine' when each of them suffered accidents. Ultimately, it wasn't just sheer cowardice, it was him trying to recreate the past - to recreate the one person who seemingly saw him as anything other than a vampire. Someone who actually wanted him around. Of course, no two snowflakes are ever exactly the same. Abel was a poor replacement as the owner of the company, Joe was barely able to keep things afloat amidst a messy and chaotic expansion and Harry wound up presiding over the company's demise.
There's a pretty widespread narrative theme in DSaF of damaged people trying to recreate something they've lost - Dave trying to turn Jack into the new Henry, Jake and his family, Harry and his former identity, the Kennedy family reuniting.
âCanât repeat the past? Why, of course you can!â
But, the fact is, you can't recreate the past. The only way forward is to pick up the pieces and build something new.
