House leans heavily on his cane inside the dimly lit patient’s room, fluorescent lights flickering intermittently. The antiseptic smell is almost tasteable as he looks at his most recent patient, Will Graham (as it states on his file), sitting hunched over on his gurney, with clear signs of fatigue and pain in his face and the tone of his voice.

Makes sense, as he wouldn’t be here otherwise, but as the one in need of medical attention, House expected him to be a little more cooperative.

"Ah, I see."

"So you’re the kind of guy who likes to play hard to get with potentially life-saving information... How charming."

Of course Mr. Kelly feels better: all he needed was a couple of IVs and a few nights of rest to be as good as new, despite Cuddy’s early ideas that forced this case upon him.

But as he diagnosed him, House had found more to this new patient than met the eye: he was a bit of a medical marvel, capable of withstanding a lot of the stupid shit it was put through, and House wanted to poke and prod him until he understood just how he worked—especially in the head.

So, he needed an excuse to get him to stay.

"No, no, that’s the placebo effect, my dear friend. We still have many a test to run."

It was usually easy to tell what was in the mind of the institutionalized before him, but this changed with Abigail Hobbs.

Since her arrival, her innocent demeanor and silence have caught his attention. And if there’s one thing that’s true about Gregory House, it’s that he’s presented with a puzzle, he will have to solve it.

"Last of what, exactly?"

He’s skeptical, and the tone that accompanies that skepticism cuts through the sterile air of the room. He doesn’t buy that to be the full extent of her story, as he can see how she shifts under his scrutiny.

"If you mean your fabricated tale, sure--I’d like the real one now if you’re so kind."

It’s rare for House to address Aubrey by anything other than her name, Bree, or "child," and when he does, it's usually in a mocking manner.

This is one of those times, as he finishes the last few bites of the last slice of pizza he’d promised to save her, all without a hint of regret.

"I’m just trying to teach you you can’t trust no one--not even your old man."

However, even though comebacks are his area of expertise, he can’t focus on what to say when he’s amazed that her heart isn’t beating, and yet here she is, walking and talking—Although he should’ve known better than to point that out to her.

Who’s barging into his office uninvited, on his time of leisure?  Why, it is no other than boy wonder oncologist, James Wilson, demanding that he return something of importance to him.

After years of having things “borrowed”, he’ll have to be more specific.

Reclining in his office chair with his feet propped up on the desk, House barely looks up from the news magazine he’s pretending to read.

It's more of an observation than a compliment, although House is no stranger to hiring someone based on their appearance. He's done it before with Cameron and Chase, and even with some temps who came before them. However, when he does, there's always something behind that piques his interest.

Dr. Hart's credentials are solid, as is her family history. But that will only get her shortlisted: she still has to go through the trials.

"I'm sure you'll do a great job, maybe even convince a few people to drop out early, but you still have to prove yourself to me."

"Of course you don’t."

When he finally speaks, his tone is laced with sarcasm. House stands up and limps slightly as he makes his way to the whiteboard, which is full of their patient’s symptoms, written by yours truly.

"Why would you? You’re programmed to see the best in people and believe in happy endings--but newsflash, Kepner, the world doesn’t work that way."

Today marks six months since they last spoke, if what House did could even be considered speaking: leaving a note on the nightstand of Alvie's hospital bed, apologizing for what happened at the abandoned warehouse. Still, the other man remains one of the few who knows House is still alive, an "honor" not bestowed upon many.

It still doesn't excuse House from breaking into the younger man's apartment, but who would have expected him to do it any other way?

Sitting in the dark on the couch, he reminisces about his old apartment, now occupied by new tenants who would never know all the crazy stuff that happened there (not that he wants to return to a place where all walls scream his dead best friend's name).

That's why he likes Alvie's apartment: it feels fresh, untainted by him.

"Hello, Alvie."

House looks over his shoulder at him, tapping his cane on the floor.

"Long time no see."
