It's not the fanciest game and I'd be lying if I said it didn't have some Real Jank, but I think it's a great narrative experience, the companions have a lot of charm, and it's worth your while to check out as a CRPG. Next time you're looking for a new fantasy realm to explore, consider the Stolen Lands!

Apologies, rant incoming: Yeah, I *immediately* thought back to Frontiers' idea of "character development" by 'repeating info about the characters you already knew about' when observing nearly all of SXSG. And while I know the upcoming movie is still very YMMV atm, I at least can expect it to be fun and different because it's not repeating SA2 or ShtH's story. And yes, I will acknowledge that being different =/= being good, but the movies are recognized as their own thing, and whatever changes they do to the source material can be ignored as not canon anyway.

Plus, and this was another whole issue with SXSG itself, anything it shows or says about Maria is... just as basic or nothing new as Shadow was given. Just the Purity Sure/Morality Pet Shadow more or less always colored his memory of her with. This on it's own wouldn't be too bad... except ofc we hadn't had these impressions already beaten into us via the manga and Dark Beginnings! Those really were nothing but "Wasn't Maria Great to Shadow? Oh Golly Gee, She Sure Was Amazing!" Meanwhile you got Gerald, aka Shadow creator and therefore ALSO an important figure in Shadow's story... practically a third wheel in favor of her (no his journal entries don't count, telling us about his sons and revealing Maria has a young sister don't inform us about who they were as individuals, just more of their family line). Here *I* was expecting a small yet sad flashback scene of Shadow and pre-insane Gerald interacting before segwaying back into the present where Shadow sighs sorrowfully at what the doctor became. But no, apparently too simple to imagine, Maria has to hog all the angst because Play It Safe N Predictable. And fans have predictably eaten it up...

I will give SXSG that it feels way less self-masturbatory than Frontiers. Characters don't stand around talking about their development, there is a more substantial story there. It's just that just like Frontiers, the game is recycling plot points that they used 20 years ago, pretending it's some new change. Great for newcomers! Not so much for the people who have stuck around since then.

(and even then, if someone hasn't played Adventure 2 or doesn't want to play ShTH because they heard it's bad, playthroughs are there. Cutscenes compilations are there.)

I really liked the NPC dialogue for both Maria and Gerald. Maria reveals more of their life, like her academic progress (apparently Shadow was a worse student than she was lol) or that she finds Shadow's quills cool. Gerald has some cute lines like an actually subtle reference to '06, in that he theorizes that two people could create a time portal but he isn't sure how to test it. But yeah, Maria is always given more attention compared to Gerald, admittedly always had ever since ShTH. And her having to tell Shadow to please not leave her in White Space because she'll live on in him 💖 feels like a way to make her Pure Goodness shine... while taking away from Shadow, who really should know better than to think about freezing his loved ones in a void for his own comfort.

Another good point is about the tie-in material. Shouldn't they act as prequels of sort, to give context to what happens in the game? Instead they once again seem to be more like recaps! "Shadow and Maria loved each other very much. Maria was a Good Girl. She was killed. Shadow, Rouge and Omega make a team. There is a commander." And even then, the scene of Maria taking a stand against the GUN soldiers does more to flesh her out than the game's cutscenes. But then again, that's another thing I noticed with SXSG: the dialogue is incredibly repetitive. You thought Sage being like "no I won't share data with the enemy" got annoying? Take a shot everytime Black Doom boasts about Shadow being his greatest creation (but when Gerald does it it's played for heartwarms, although it is a very interesting parallel...) or someone talks about how Shadow's biology, the same biology he's using to destroy levels and bosses, doesn't matter one bit. I get it.

Karlach almost burned out before deciding to go back to avernus with wyll the blade of avernus, they've possibly found a way to fix her engine, she still thinks of the days laying in the soft grass. Free of avernus but she has wyll by her side until she can do it all again. (I can't let her die I'm sorry) 🥰💖

Wyll no longer the blade of frontiers but just as brave as he once was, he's in enternal debt to mizora in exchange for his father's safety, it may not be what he thought he'd be doing but he's glad to be by karlachs side. ❣💥

Minthara has began back in the underdark, beginning a rebellion against Loth her former Goddess, she has already found a sizeable following. She plans to retake her family home .💢💅

Lavellen and Gale

Gale returned the crown of Karnes to Mystra in exchange she's cured Gale of the Karses weave in his chest, he's free finally, after returning to waterdeep with his wife Lavellen he introduced her to his family the first Mrs dekarios and Tara (HC)lavellen also met his father later in time at a peaceful cemetery in the country side. Lavellen and Gale were married on his towers balcony in the wizard/Sorcerer fashion and have had a little baby girl a half elf named Ivy. 💜❣💚

I love baulders gate 3 so much, this being my 6th playthrough I thought I'd seen everything but I haven't and I'm sure I'll find more on the 7th one.

Otakon 2023 Wrap-Up Post!

Otakon 2023 was this past weekend, and I gotta say I had a great time! (if that wasn’t obvious. From the deluge of posts about the digimon movie redubs). That was the main reason I went this year, and the screening took up a significant portion of my time there (WORTH. EVERY. MILLISECOND.), but during my one day I was able to blitz through the main halls as well. And I met @ahiddenpath ! That was AWESOME!!! She’s incredibly sweet, and we got to walk through Artist Alley together and talk (irl!!!) about Digimon, fandom, and life ☺️

My con haul!! I was like, “eh, it’s not that much” but some might beg to differ, including me, now that I look at it all together 😅 Most of it came from the Dealer’s Hall. There is one vendor who is a huge Digimon fan herself and sells a TON of amazing digi-merch, and that’s where most of my money went, ahahaha. She not only had some amazing hard-to-get figures and blind boxes (the Adv. kigurumi figures and Piedmon keychain set), but some Frontier 20th Anniversary merch as well! HOW CAN I SAY NO TO THAT??? That is a GIANT TAKUYA ACRYLIC STAND (which I would prefer to be a bit smaller), but aaah!!!! 🤩 I randomly got Sora from a blind box (💖), as well as Koji-in-pajamas (!!), and spent a little extra to get Takeru unwrapped. Unwrapped Jyou was the same price as a random blind box, because she said no one wants him and she always has extras! Can you believe it?? JYOU! 😭 Hidden and I agree that she’s not reaching enough of this audience on Tumblr, because HOW DO YOU NOT LOVE JYOU? Look at his face! He HAD to come home with me 😤

Ahem. Anyway, I found those oldschool Fox Kids-looking vinyl clings at a separate stall that sold a lot of vintage 90s stuff. Dub merch!! I do have a small collection of that.

The pencil-board… folder… thing… is two-sided and I believe it was originally an extra with a specific issue of Animedia that covered both tri and Appmon! I had to. Because APPMON (also I do love that tri art) 🥺

Some close-ups of the small stuff! The resin statue of the mountains came from Artist Alley (actually, a friend of Hidden!) because it reminds me of home. I also really liked the moon-shaped pendant. And a citrus pin! MY BRAND!! I have a shirt with Togemon on it (the cactus), but I have a hard time finding citrus merch, so YES, I can now rep my full screen name in an outfit 👍👍👍 One lone Goomy pin is my sole Pokemon purchase this year. “Hen with a Tie” cracked me up (if you’re an anime dinosaur like me, you know), and the Mimi button was actually a gift from Hidden! 😭

So there you have it: the results of an intense and incredibly exciting digi-day! I’m still so shocked that my local con got this amazing premiere, and I got to watch the whole thing (er… when I wasn’t live-texting information to certain people who couldn’t be there in person, lol!). I’m SO incredibly grateful to the Discord group for notifying me about it, because otherwise I probably wouldn’t have even gone to the con at all this year!

Really hoping I can see my OG con buddy either at Otakon 2024 or her local con, so she can take a well-earned break from being a new mom and join in on the fun! 🤞🤞🤞

💖 What is your primary writing goal for this year?

I want to finish my two poor codywan fics 😭😭 they've been languishing since 2022... I need to put them out of their misery

🦄 Is there a new POV you'd like to try writing?

Maybe Bradley! I've been mulling over over a 5+1 piece of outside povs of Mav, and while there are some I would be comfortable writing (Slider, OCs) I don't know if I can properly grapple with the layers Bradshaw jnr has. I don't really like Bradley as a person, but as a character I have to admit that he's got so very much going on for him. I've dabbled in some unposted other wips but this idea would really be cutting to the heart of him and I think it would be fun to try that!

ahaha probably not what you're expecting but after all the selkie talk for saintspy in discord now I wanna do a selkie au for them so so bad 🥺🥺 there's no one else in this kitchen but I WILL cook

I wrote about 20k of pure angst over nano (squeezing Ice like he's a chew toy) and it doesn't really make sense out of context but I'll let you guess what wip it's for ;) more under the cut! I really do want to finish this fic this year

New Year Writer Goal Asks

He spoke to Slider a few weeks ago, so he shares the conversation because he can’t think of anything else. They’re both back in San Diego for the week, but soon enough they’ll both depart – what point is there in talking about the house, or what’s new that’s happening around here, or what’s changed since last year? Mav nods along to his news of Slider and then tells Ice about a few of his former TOP GUN students that he’s run into while on deployment. Ice asks about if they’re keeping up to TOP GUN standards and Mav hems and haws and says yes but that there’s always room to learn and grow. The Iraqis are fond of RPGs, and that’s the next frontier they’re learning about: how to fly to avoid getting shot down. Neither of them mention the US soldiers which have been captured on foreign soil. Ice doesn’t want to think about that in relation to Mav, and it’s one more thing that he puts out of his mind. Easier to talk about killing people instead.

Is this all they can talk about? Death and work and the weather? They used to laugh and argue and test themselves against each other. Ice hasn’t smiled once in the whole time they’ve been here, and Mav has cracked a few jokes but they’ve fallen flat for them both. Mav has their feet pressed together under the table, and he’s still got that look on his face that he did yesterday when he tried to ask Ice what the fuck was going on – he’s still worried. Why? What has Ice done this week to deserve that loyalty? Is fucking him really all it takes? Ice is bad at that. Mav could really do a lot better. They don’t live in the same country anymore, let alone the same state, and it’s pure chance that they have this week together. Ice pushes the last of his pasta around his plate and Mav steals a bite from him. Ice doesn’t protest. He’s pathetic and he can’t even hide it and Mav is pitying him for it. Mav is going to leave him. It’s a fucking miracle he hasn’t already. Ice is an unpleasant person to be around these days. He doesn’t know how to have a normal conversation anymore. The only things he can talk about to Mav are work and life-admin tasks. He shuts the fuck up and Mav talks a bit about the new food he’d tried overseas and how nice it was, then tells a funny story about the people there who fed it to him. Ice isn’t really paying attention. Can’t focus. He feels like complete shit, like he’s been hit with a car or been on back to back shifts with no sleep for forty-eight hours or like someone has beat him half to death. Barely grunting answers when Mav asks a question. Doesn’t finish his food. Pays with his credit card at the counter and doesn’t even bother looking at the total. Drives Mav home with the streetlights blurring around him.

Mav is quiet when they get into the house. Ice hangs his jacket up and takes his tie off, the rasping of the silk against his rough hands only darkening his mood. He doesn’t turn any of the lights on and Mav doesn’t either. It’s late, and they should go to bed, and Mav is brushing his teeth but Ice escapes outside to smoke. He doesn’t know if that makes him feel better or not. Inside, Mav doesn’t talk, kisses him, even though his nose scrunches up at the tar in Ice’s mouth. Ice apologises for it and goes and brushes his teeth. In bed, Mav kisses him again but doesn’t do anything else.

He’s not going to do anything else.

Ice closes his eyes for a long moment before reaching out. If the sex is what’s keeping Mav with him then he has to try. He has to show Mav that he wants this too. Mav rises against him eagerly; so he’d wanted this, but hadn’t tried to get it. The confusing sickness in his head gets heavy again. He pushes it away. If he controls what they do, if he doesn’t let Mav ask, then they can have normal sex and that’s fine. It only goes bad when he thinks about it too much, so he doesn’t think about it. And he does want to touch Mav. On Ice’s terms, with Ice in control, it’s so good to feel his wide shoulders and taste his musk and kiss him languidly. On Ice’s terms, sex with Mav can make the rest of the world stop mattering.

He wants that. He needs that.

He pushes Mav back into the bed and swings a leg up over him. He’s still wearing his pants and shirt, but he gets Mav naked and touches every part of him he can reach, kissing and licking and sucking. Neither of them say anything. It’s not that kind of night. Mav’s hand cups the back of his head, strokes his jaw, supports Ice and brings him to where Mav wants. Ice tastes his sweat and follows it, nipping and biting so that Mav will look at the marks on his skin and know that Ice was there, Ice wanted him, Ice did this to him. Taking Mav into his mouth is blissful. He tastes better than dinner did. Ice strokes what he can’t fit in his mouth slowly, not wanting to rush this. This is what he’s been missing, for months on end – the ability to get the fuck out of his head. When Mav firms his grip on Ice’s skull, Ice moans and softens his mouth and lets him. Like this, giving Mav what he wants – letting Mav take – there’s nothing better. Nothing better at all. 

He jerks himself off afterwards, quickly while Mav is panting and sprawled in the blankets. At least he knows what to expect if he’s touching himself, and if he doesn’t think about it then it’s fine. It’s all fine. He can finish and get up and wash his hands and go and sit on the verandah and have another cigarette and it’s fine. They don’t have to talk about it, so they don’t. End of story.

Just recently embraced my plurality (I suspected for years that I'm a system but only recently decided to "allow" myself to call it that), noticed that caffeine seems to affect the body differently depending on who's fronting. Is that weird?

As to the question... I have absolutely no idea!

We don't drink enough caffeine to say for ourselves. But it's probably not too weird.

Turns out, some of the effects associated with caffeine (and people's morning cups of coffee specifically) may just be placebo.

So with that in mind, some headmates experiencing different psychogenic effects attributed to caffeine would make a great deal of sense.

You know, as more research is done into plurality, I would love to one day see studies of different sorts of drugs to test how different fronters respond to stimuli in the same system.

Caffeine, alcohol, marijuana, etc. It would be cool to explore, and could give us a lot more insight into how the brain responds to these overall!
