Not specific to any specific fandom, but... 😂 Definitely when people criticise ships they don't like & justify their own OTPs by trying to appeal to politics or morality.

I've seen people argue that m/m shippers (a few times, specifically tumblr user fitz rove - that's always fun 😂💀) are misogynists; I've seen people argue that f/m shippers are homophobic; I've seen people argue that people who ship ONE f/m ship are misogynists but people who ship a DIFFERENT f/m ship from the same work are women's liberation activists; I've never seen anyone say much of anything about F/F shippers because the masses (save for specific fandoms where it's more commonplace) don't care about wlw fic 💀💀💀🥲

The fact is, liking or enjoying most things is morally neutral, but the way you talk about them and "justify" them (if you start down that road) to other people in public spaces, specifically by commenting on the canon or the state of fan culture, is (often) political. And that's how a lot of analysis and interpretation is, it's not inherently bad! But I do think that in some cases people can be very combative with their takes and just label people with different opinions some kind of bigot, which is never productive imo.

And like, yeah, there is bigotry in fandom (especially in situations when certain things or headcanons become established fanon to the extent that straying from them is seen as a violation - and sometimes these headcanons can have roots in offensive or reductive stereotypes), there are also weird people with weird worldviews in fandom, but I still don't think people approach these things in a productive way most of the time.

Really weird funfact today but

As you might know I go to art school for illustration animation and storytelling and i currently have to adapt a dutch children's book into visual media

The main character is a sassy stoic girl named Cato, and I kid you not, every time I have to deal with designing or analysing her character, I just go "ah yes Cato from Once There Were Dragons- wait-"

Thought that was funny to mention! :DD

Bruh 💀 that's so funny, Cato is such an un-wholesome name in my mind 😭 I wonder why the author chose to name her after a roman senator?

My reason is lame. A lot of the recorded male names from the Scottish isles at the time were roman and I grew up on The Hunger Games, where the violent character Cato realizes when facing his (extremely violent) death that he was always going to die and nothing he did could have stopped it. Narratively that's how I made my Cato. Not based on that character's personality but creating someone to 1. Hurt things and 2. Die at the end, and then naming him a pseudo-regionally appropriate name that I already associated with those 2 requirements in my mind. It wasn't until after I started with those 2 decisions that I created his motivations w Gustav, poured my heart into his backstory, and got extremely attached 💀

So for me it was kind of a random name I picked when I wasn't taking OTWD as seriously. It means wise/shrewd/clever though, so maybe that's why your author chose it? Kind of fits sassy and stoic and I do see how it's a cute girl name. I wonder if they'd get along 💀 what's the book called? Will you be able to post some of the work on Tumblr?
