As mentioned, the Korean Empire was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910 and remained a territory of Japan until the end of WWII and the Japanese surrender - whereupon things get really weird(er).  Korea was divided along the 38th parallel, with the USSR in control in the north and the USA in control in the south.  Not surprisingly, reunification attempts failed, leading to the Korean War, and the subsequent establishment of separate governments, with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in the north and the Republic of Korea in the south.  Since then, DPR Korea has been led by Kim Il Sung and his family, with what appears (from the outside) to be a fairly healthy cult of personality around a Stalinist authoritarian dictator, (probably inevitably) leading to what outside observers claim to be unparalleled human rights violations.  But as you know, it’s rather difficult to observe anything at all from the outside, and next to impossible to get inside.  So.  There it is.

La séptima princesa (Segunda parte y última parte)

Al cabo de pocos días un sirviente reportó un fenómeno extraño que sucedía a las orillas del monte Tajang. Nubes multicolores danzaban en el cielo día y noche. Para él ello significaba que la séptima princesa se encontraba allí.

El rey ordenó que de inmediato se explorara aquella misteriosa costa. En ella los sirvientes descubrieron la choza de los ancianos y a su hermosa hija adoptiva. Pronto contaron a la princesa sobre su origen y la grave enfermedad que amenazaba la vida de sus verdaderos padres. Para comprobárselo, los sirvientes le mostraron las ropas que vistió el día de su nacimiento, con su fecha de nacimiento y la de sus padres escritos en ellas. La séptima princesa solicitó una prueba más contundente. Así que los sirvientes llevaron al día siguiente sangre del rey en tazón. La séptima princesa puso un poco de su sangre allí y pudo ver como esta se mezclaba perfectamente con la de su padre.

Los sirvientes regresaron presurosos con la séptima princesa al palacio del rey Ogu y la reina Pionghan. La condición de los reyes había empeorado desde el día en que los sirvientes fueron en búsqueda de la princesa. Con lágrimas en los ojos pidieron perdón a la princesa y le explicaron que una extraña enfermedad los mataba rápidamente, y que sólo el agua medicinal del reino de Sohiok podría curarlos. La séptima princesa perdonó a sus padres y se comprometió a traer la cura. Se vistió con ropajes de sus hermanas, tomó unos zapatos y báculo de hierro y comenzó el viaje al reino de Sohiok.

La séptima princesa comenzó a recorrer un penoso camino, hasta que llegó con una lavandera. Le pidió indicaciones para llegar al reino de Sohiok pero la lavandera sólo le diría si lavaba las ropas en su lugar. La princesa lavó con tanto ahínco que la lavandera se quedó sorprendida de la blancura conseguida. Y loe dijo que siguiera el camino hasta encontrar a un hombre que construye un puente, él le daría indicaciones. Así lo hizo la séptima princesa hasta llegar con aquel hombre, pero este sólo le daría indicaciones si ella construía el puente en su lugar. La princesa colocó 99 noventa y nueve travesaños; satisfecho, el hombre le dijo que siguiera el camino hasta encontrar a un hombre que construía una pagoda. Él le daría indicaciones. Así lo hizo la princesa y en cuanto llegó con aquel hombre este le pidió terminar la pagoda para poder decirle por dónde continuar. Ante los ojos atónitos del hombre, la séptima princesa terminó la torre. Entonces el constructor le indicó el camino y le dijo que debía encontrar a un hombre que lavaba unas toallas mugrientas. Él le diría por dónde continuar.

La séptima princesa encontró al hombre lavando toallas mugrientas. Después de solicitarle información sobre el reino de Sohiok, este le pidió dejar las toallas muy blancas, sólo así le diría por dónde continuar. La princesa dejó las toallas despidiendo un delicioso aroma e inmaculadas. Entonces el hombre le dijo que siguiera el camino hasta toparse con un sacerdote y él le daría indicaciones. Cuando llegó con el monje, este le indicó el camino que debía seguir hasta toparse con un buda y un asceta jugando un juego de mesa. Ambos miraron con mucha sorpresa a la princesa, y antes de que ella pudiera hablar la cuestionaron. Ninguna bestia o ser humano había llegado hasta ese sitio sagrado. Ella les contó sobre sus padres enfermos y les pidió de rodillas que le indicaran el camino al reino de Sohiok, pues ahí conseguiría el agua curativa que les salvaría la vida. Conmovido, el gran buda le mostró el camino y le regaló un bordón dorado y unas hojas mágicas. La princesa sabía que el camino que seguía no era de este mundo, y que tendría que atravesar miles de infiernos hasta conseguir lo que quería.

La séptima princesa recorrió ochenta y cuatro mil infiernos hasta topar con un castillo de hierro, cuyas torres traspasaban el cielo. Por un momento sintió desesperación, pues no sabía qué hacer para traspasar el castillo, pero agitó las hojas mágicas y este se desplomó hasta hacerse polvo. La destrucción del castillo liberó a miles de demonios y almas en pena; seres sin brazos, sin ojos y sin piernas rodearon a la princesa suplicando por la salvación. Ella rezó hasta que esos espíritus fueran conducidos al paraíso. Cuando se liberó de los espíritus continuó el camino y halló una enorme fosa, imposible de cruzar. Lanzó el báculo dorado del buda y de la fosa salió un arcoíris que le sirvió como puente.

Al llegar al otro lado de la fosa, encontró a un hombre enorme y de aspecto horrible llamado Muchangsung, el señor del reino de Sohiok. Muchangsung miró con desconcierto a la princesa, nadie humano había logrado llegar hasta ahí y cruzar tantos infiernos, además de la fosa imposible de cruzar. La séptima princesa lloró ante aquel horrible hombre y le solicitó el agua curativa para salvar a sus padres. El gigante sólo le diría dónde encontrarla si durante tres años traía leña, durante otros tres años mantenía su hogar caliente, y durante otros tres años acarreaba agua. La princesa aceptó y pasó nueve años cuidando la casa de Muchangsung. Él quedó tan sorprendido de las habilidades y fortaleza de la princesa que le pidió casarse y tener siete hijos, sólo después de ello le diría dónde encontrar el agua. Así lo hizo la princesa y vivió felizmente criando a sus hijos, hasta que sintió la terrible necesidad de volver. Muchangsung le contó que el agua que había acarreado durante tantos años era la que necesitaba, y todas las plantas de aquel reino tenían extraordinarios poderes curativos.

Acompañada de su familia, la séptima princesa volvió a recorrer el camino hasta llegar a la montaña Chonbiol. El camino ya no fue tan tortuoso, pues esta vez la acompañaban sus hijos y su esposo. Al llegar, descubrió con tristeza que sus padres habían muerto y se realizaba la procesión fúnebre. La séptima princesa se cruzó y se abalanzó sobre los cadáveres de sus padres para poner en sus bocas el agua curativa y llenarlos de ungüentos milagrosos. Ante la mirada sorprendida de todos, los reyes resucitaron y abrazaron a su hija orgullosos de todo lo que logró y los peligros que sorteó para salvarlos.

El rey Ogu permitió a Muchangung recaudar todas las ofrendas del reino para su manutención y la de sus siete hijos, y nombró a los hijos miembros del consejo de los diez reyes del otro mundo.

North Korea

North Korea, officially Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Korean: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hanja: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; transl. Korean peninsula, with Pyongyang as the country's capital and largest city. To the north and northwest, the country is bordered by China and Russia along the rivers Amnok (known as the Yalu in Chinese) and Tumen; it is bordered to the south by South Korea, the two countries separated by the Korean Demilitarized Zone (ZDC). The two states claim to be the legitimate government of the entire Korean peninsula and its adjacent islands. North and South Korea became members of the United Nations in 1991.

In 1910, Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan. In 1945, after the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II, Korea was divided into two zones, with the north occupied by the Soviet Union and the south occupied by the United States. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 independent governments were formed in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, in the north, and in the Republic of Korea, in the south. An invasion initiated by the North triggered the Korean War (1950-1953). The Korean Armistice Agreement led to a ceasefire, but no peace treaty was ever signed.

North Korea officially describes itself as a self-sufficient socialist state and formally holds elections. Several analysts, however, classify the country's government as a totalitarian Stalinist dictatorship, particularly because of the intense personality cult around Kim Il-sung and his family. The Workers' Party of Korea (PTC), led by a member of the ruling family, holds power and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland, of which all political officials are required to be members. Juche, the ideology of national self-sufficiency, was introduced into the constitution in 1972. The means of production are owned by the state through state-owned enterprises and collectivized farms. Most services, such as health, education, housing and food production, are also subsidized or financed by the state. The country follows the Songgun, or "military first" policy, with a total of 9,495,000 people among active soldiers, in reserve and paramilitaries. Its active army of 1.21 million men is the fourth largest in the world, after China, the United States and India. The country also has nuclear weapons.

Several international organizations assess that serious human rights violations in North Korea are common and so severe that they are unparalleled in the contemporary world. From 1994 to 1998, North Korea suffered a famine that resulted in the death of thousands of people ( between 240,000 and 420,000 North Koreans), and the population continues to suffer from malnutrition. The North Korean government vehemently denies most of the allegations, even with evidence and accusing international organizations of fabricating human rights abuses as part of a smear campaign with the secret intent to overthrow the regime, although they admit there are human rights issues related to the living conditions that the government is trying to correct.

이제야 분명히 알았다 5 문재인 대통령은, 일제 강점기에도 우리 편에 있었고, 일본으로부터 우리가 해방되는 일에도 크게 공헌했고, 6.25 사변 중에도 우리의 혈맹동지로, 분단 뒤에도 우리를 꾸준히 도운 북미합중국을 원수로 대하는 일을 중단하고 그들과의 끈끈한 관계를 영원히 이어가겠다고 선언 하는 것이 지혜롭다. 그렇게 되면 중화인민공화국은 우리에게 경의를 표할 수밖에 없을 것이고 북의 조선민주주의인민공화국 또한 정신을 바싹 차리게 될 것이다. 한국과 미국의 관계가 아름답던 시절에 중국의 시진핑 주석이 한국의 대통령을 초대하여 융숭하게 대접한 사실을 기억하지 못하는가. 핵무기를 제조하고 보유하는 것만이 김일성 왕국을 지킬 수 있다고 착각한 북은 가난을 무릅쓰고 핵무기 제조에 박차를 가하였고 바야흐로 핵보유국으로 인정을 받게 되었다. 바로 그 시기에 문재인의 주선으로 미국 대통령을 만나 득을 보려다 그만 신세를 망친 셈이 되었다. ‘한반도 비핵화’라는 구호대로 대한민국은 핵무기를 만들지 않겠지만 우리의 우방인 미국은 핵무기를 이미 갖고 있고 일본 또한 조금만 노력하면 비밀리에 핵보유국이 될 가능성이 충분히 있는 나라이다보니 핵을 보유하고 있다는 북의 큰 무기이자 메리트는 미국 앞에서 무용지물이 되고 만 것이다. 그런 강대국들 틈에서 우리는 휴전선의 비무장 지대 2억 7천만 평을 유엔에 기증하여 한반도에 유엔이 들어오는 일을 왜 문재인 대통령이 도모할 수 없단 말인가. 한국에는 머리 좋은 사람들도 많고 북의 인민공화국은 대한민국의 신세를 져야 할 일이 많을 수 있다. 길은 우리 앞에 있다. 2020-7-3

If Kim Jong-un’s police catch a North Korean with Game of Thrones: The Complete Series box set, that person could face public execution. But for watching just one episode, the penalty is a more lenient 15 years in a fetid prison camp. 

Anyone caught with large amounts of media from South Korea, the United States or Japan now faces the death penalty. Those caught watching face prison camp for 15 years.

And your hair had better not be more distinctive than Kim’s.

The Daily NK, an online publication in Seoul with sources in North Korea, reported that three teenagers had been sent to a re-education camp for cutting their hair like K-pop idols and hemming their trousers above their ankles.

Leaving North Korea is not an option, especially since the start of the pandemic.

Leaving the country has become almost impossible with the current "shoot-to-kill" order at the tightly controlled border. And it is difficult not to expect Mr Kim's new law to have more of a chilling effect. 

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is as close as it gets to a large Orwellian theme park.

North Korea is effectively a communist totalitarian absolute monarchy run by the Kim family. The current supreme leader is the grandson of the Kim who founded the country in 1948.

Human rights don’t exist in the country and North Korea is never far from famine because the régime squanders the country’s meager wealth disproportionately on the military and the development of nuclear weapons.
