Hi Teba, what was your favourite game to play as a child?

There was this one game I played a lot with Saki and Harth. Essentially how it works is you use five stones or beads and go through a series of levels. I’m using beads with sand inside them for extra weight.

At the beginning of every level, you toss all five beads on the ground. For level 1, you pick one bead up to start, toss it in the air, grab another bead from the ground, then catch the tossed bead without dropping anything. If you fail at catching the tossed bead, drop the beads or touch any other beads while you’re grabbing them, you lose and let the next player go.

You throw all five beads again after completing a level. As you progress, the number of beads you grab increases. At level 2, you pick up two at a time after tossing the bead. At level 3, you grab three beads, then one. You pick up four in the next level. There are variations depending on who you play with but this is probably the standard way.

The final level’s pretty hard. You have to toss all five beads in the air, land them on the back of your hand (or wing in my case), toss them again, then catch all the beads without flipping your hand. Whatever beads you catch in the end determines the number of points you get. If you drop any during the second toss, you don’t get any points, even if you managed to catch some of them.

Harth likes playing the version where you toss all the beads in your hand while you pick them up. So on level 3 for example, you’d grab three beads after tossing one, then toss four beads while grabbing the last bead. I’m better at rock skipping, but I find this game to be the most memorable.

임용포기서를 제출하고 주말 내내 짐을 줄여놨다. 사람 많은 곳에 있으면 숨이 잘 안 쉬어지는 내가 내발로 그곳을 들어가기로 했다는게 나도 참 변하는 구나 싶고 잘 견딜 수 있을까 겁도 나고 아무리 괴롭고 힘들어도 2년만 참자 2년 금방간다 이러는 중이다. 자차로 25분, ktx로 1시간, 다시 버스로 15분. 매일매일이 고단하고 힘들지만 제일 불편한 건 뭐니뭐니 해도 역에서 그리고 직장에서 가끔 마주치는 내 20대를 더럽혔던 엑스. 그인간 마주칠까봐 거기 근처는 가기도 싫었는데 생각해보면 내가 불편해할게 아니더라고. 그래선지 나보다 더 놀래는 그러면서도 철저히 날 무시하는. 이제 이사가면 부딪힐 확률 확 낮아지겠지. 점심도 집에 가서 먹을거니까. 머리는 일할 때만 쓰고 정말 딱 2년만 2026년 10월까지만 있다가 오자. 내 예쁜 이 집 이 동네 이 공기. 다 잘있어 꼭 다시 올께.

*향긋하다

기억을 되짚어볼 때 그 향기와 느낌을 떠올리곤 한다.

내가 좋아하는 향은 대체로 포근한 기억이 난다. 아니 사실 그렇게 기억된 것일지도 모르지만.

안락하고 포근한 냄새, 옷장을 열면 나던 오래된 가구 냄새속에 엄마옷에서 나던 향,

밥 짓는 냄새, 의자 마디마다 만져서 나던 씁쓸한 쇠냄새, 아빠가 아이스크림을 사오던 날의 차가운 냄새. 빳빳하게 다려진 교복 사이로 나던 새옷 냄새 같은 것.

그런 향긋한 날들이 두번은 오지 않는다는 걸 알아서 자꾸 그걸 헤메이게 된다.

나는 과거로부터 그것들을 잔뜩껴안고 돌아온다.

그럼에도 어떤 공허함이 그걸 대신해주질 못해서, 그래서 그런 시간들을 외로운 순간이라고 인정해야 할 것만 같다.

꼭 월요일 저녁만 되면 술이 땡긴다. 지난 일 년을 되돌아본 결과 보통 금요일보다 월요일에 술을 많이 마셨다. 금요일은 괜히 주말이 코앞이므로 테니스를 치러 갔다가 술을 먹거나, 술을 먹지 않거나 둘 중 하나였는데, 월요일은 테니스고 뭐고 술을 찾은 적이 많았다. 일요일엔 다음날이 월요일이라 술은커녕 저녁을 적당히 먹고 저녁에 운동을 하고 바로 잠들고, 월요일엔 시간이 굉장히 빨리 간다는 생각이 들 만큼 회사 특성상 훨씬 바쁘고 정신없기 때문에 평소보다 더 집중을 해서 그런지 몰라도 월요일 저녁은 그냥 술을 마시고 싶은 마음이 든다. 그래서 일부러 말레이시아에 사는 ���구와 언어 교환을 위해 영상통화하는 날을 월요일로 잡았는데, 그마저 약속이 미뤄지거나 하면 그냥 곧바로 술을 마셨다. 집이든, 밖에서든. 지난주는 말레이시아 친구가 여행을 떠났기 때문에 술 마시기 딱(?) 좋은 월요일이었다. 하루 종일 답답한 사무실에 있었더니 집에서 뭘 먹기가 싫어서 외식을 하기로 했다. 집 앞에 여러 음식점 중 어디로 갈까 고민하던 중 정말 코앞이지만 이사 온 지 1년이 지나도록 한 번도 가보지 않았던 식당에 가기로 했다. 바로 막창집! 나는 사실 당면과 야채가 많이 들어간 돼지곱창이나 소 곱창(특히 그중에선 염통)을 좋아하기 때문에 오롯하게 막창이 메인인 식당을 한 번도 가본 적이 없다. 그래서 늘 외면하고 지나갔던 곳이었는데, 늘 정우는 내게 막창 맛있으니 한번 먹어보자고 권유했다. 이번엔 어찌 된 노릇인지 못 이긴 척 가보기로 결심. 모듬 소곱창을 먹을 때 나온 막창이 난 제일 별로였기 때문에 궁시렁거리며 따라갔다. 돼지막창 2인분과 술을 주문했다. 막창은 초벌을 하기 때문에 시간이 걸린다며 직원분이 막창을 찍어 먹을 소스와 깻잎과 상추를 넣은 파절임, 그리고 콩나물국과 계란찜을 미리 내왔다. 에너지를 많이 쏟은 하루라 배가 고파서 계란찜을 한 입 먹고 난 뒤 시콤새콤한 맛이 땡겨서 바로 파절임 소스에 무쳐진 깻잎 몇 조각을 입에 넣었다. 그리고 곧바로 커진 눈. 깻잎 향이 너무 향긋하잖아? 내가 살면서 먹었던 깻잎 중 가장 향이 강한 깻잎이었다! 난 깻잎을 좋아하니 향이 강할수록 더 좋아할 수밖에! 정우한테도 빨리 깻잎 좀 먹어보라고 말하며 한 번 더 먹었는데 깻잎 향이 입안에 가득 퍼졌다. 그렇게 깻잎을 몇 젓가락 더 먹고 황금비율의 소맥까지 입에 털어 넣으니 월요일의 스트레스가 사라지는 느낌. 게다가 초벌이 되어 나온 막창을 바짝 구워 먹으니 내가 좋아하는 마른 오징어의 그 살짝 탄 맛의 몇 백배 업그레이드된 맛이 느껴져서 난 이날 이후로 돼지막창을 좋아하게 됐다. 왜 지금까지 살면서 돼지 막창은 쳐다도 안 봤을까. 올해 말 전세계약이 끝나기 때문에 다른 동네로 이사갈까 기웃거렸는데 이 동네에 남고 싶은 마음이 살짝 더 생겼다.

1. 단맛 짠맛 쓴맛 신맛만 느껴지는 미각보다야 셀 수도 없이 넓고 다양한 후각의 세계가 취향의 호불호에 미치는 영향은 감히 가늠할 수 없을 것이다. 와인, 위스키, 커피 그리고 심지어 담배까지. 그저 즐기고 말았던 향의 취향에 대해 보다 선명하게 알고 싶은 마음에 이제서야 ���피와 술을 마시며 연상되는 향들을 조금씩 기록하고 있다. 한순간에 예전 어느 특정한 순간의 기억을 떠올리게 만드는 대단한 힘을 갖고 있으면서도 금방 휘발되어 날아가는 것이 향이니까. 오래도록 기억하기 위해서 순간의 감상을 굳이 기록으로 남겨야 할 필요를 느낀다.

2. 이탈리아 여행 중 잠깐 들렀던 이름 모를 카페에서 마신 음료의 향을 여전히 잊지 못하고 있다. 알 듯 말 듯 , 어딘가 익숙하면서도 새롭고 신비하게 느껴지던 그 향이 도대체 무슨 향인지 궁금한데 몇 년째 그 이름을 몰라서 찾아 헤매는 중이다. 언젠가 마셨던 매실 향 술과도 비슷하고 그 옛날 맥도날드에서 났던 향과도 비슷한데 도무지 뭐라고 특정할 수는 없는 향. 맡기만 한다면 지금 당장이라도 나를 살레르노로 데려다줄 수 있는 향긋한 냄새.
