“Air Burial”: Reflections of Tibetan Wisdom in Glass・「鳥葬」：チベット文化の叡智を映すガラス彫刻

American artist Roni Horn, renowned for her contemporary works in painting, photography, sculpture, and drawing, often draws inspiration from nature’s forces and their shifting interplay with our perceptions of objects and landscapes.

My photo captures autumn leaves reflected in a pool of water atop Horn’s glass sculpture, Air Burial. The cylindrical piece, measuring 131.4 cm tall (51 in.) and 142.2 cm in diameter (56 in.), was crafted through a process Horn developed in the 1990s, where molten glass is poured into a cast and set over months. The result is a translucent exterior and a transparent, almost liquid-like interior. The water collected on the surface creates two layers of reflection, merging nature and art.

The title, Air Burial, references the Tibetan funerary ritual commonly known as a “sky burial.” This practice reflects a deep understanding of life’s impermanence, with the body returned to nature to sustain other life—a sustainable tradition shaped by Tibet’s harsh environment. Horn once explained that she envisions her sculpture undergoing a similar organic transformation, gradually breaking down and merging with its surroundings, echoing the essence of the sky burial.

【かいわいの時】元禄六年（1693）八月十日：井原西鶴没 （大阪市史編纂所「今日は何の日」）

西鶴は、「誓願寺本堂西のうら手南向、三側目中程」（滝沢馬琴）に葬られた。その墓は、誓願寺境内で3回［註］移設されている。その経緯および実行者を記すと

（1回目　1889年）幸田露伴 今や露伴幸に因あり縁ありて、茲に斯に來つて翁を吊へば、墓前の水乾き樒枯れて、鳥雀いたづらに噪ぎ塚後に苔黑み、霜凍りて屐履の跡なく、北風恨を吹て日光寒く、胸噫悲に閉ぢて言語迷ふ。噫世に功ありて世既に顧みず、翁も亦世に求むるなかるべし。翁は安きや、翁は笑ふや、唯我一炷の香を焚き一盞の水を手向け、我志をいたし、併せて句を誦す、翁若し知るあらば魂尚饗。九天の霞を洩れてつるの聲　露伴。「井原西鶴を弔ふ文」『小文学　第1号』1889より。

*幸田露伴が処女作『露団々』で金港堂から得た原稿料は五十円（現在価値で約170万円）。その「資」で露伴は旅に出る。1888年大晦日から1889年1月31日まで丸ひと月（露伴来弔はこの折。移設費用は、その「資」で賄った）。「時に嚢中一銭も無くなりければ、自ら経済の妙を得たるに誇ること甚し」（『酔興記』）。

（2回目　1910年）木崎好尚 浮世の月二年見過ごして二百七十年の昔（略）印の墓はいつしか八丁目寺町誓願寺の無縁塔におし込められしを二十余年前幸田露伴君が旅の置みや��に現今の本堂東南手に再興されしも浮世草紙の紙よりも薄き人情今度の電路問題の墓地取払ひの憂い目見る墓のぬし誰も見返るものなく《略》二百十年忌の追善発起の手前それがし痩せ腕を揮うて施主と相成申さん四日の日曜の午後一時に形計の移転式を営んで下さいと口約して置いた《略》さて、今度の改葬場所は元の地点に近いと信ぜらるゝ本堂の西南手の樟の下陰と定めたれば鶴のなき声に尋ね寄らんとする文学上有縁の方々に此顛末を告参す（大阪にて好尚）。「東京朝日新聞　明治四十三年十二月五日」

（3回目　1933年）南木芳太郎 明治二十幾年の頃、幸田露伴氏によって無縁塔中より発見され、門内近き所に建てられてあったが、明治四十二年の冬、電車通路の爲寺域は狭められ墓地整理の止むなきに至ったのを木崎好尚氏によつて、本堂西南手の通路に面し移されたのである、その後星霜二十幾年、現在に至りては背後が隣地との境界線にあるため、いつしか建てられし古小屋の板塀は痛く損じ實に見苦しく且つ墓域もなく悄然として無縁塔に並んであるのは如何にも侘しく感じられるので、今回誓願寺住職を促し更に西北隅の好位置に再轉させ、墓域を画し松壽軒に因み大なる松樹を植え、塔上を被ふ事とした、ほんの心だけであるが、これで墓らしくなったと思つてゐる。「西鶴の墓」上方郷土研究会『郷土研究　上方　第三十ニ号』1933（＝写真も）

In Celtic also Norse mythology, March was known as the 'month of lengthening days', which wakes the alder from its winter slumber.

Alder trees are found in the northern hemisphere. Although it is a broad-leaved tree, only alder bears cones, so it is easy to recognise them at a glance in winter. Alder wood can survive completely submerged in water, and never far from water, Alder trees can most often be found lining the banks of a stream, loch, or river, or in boggy wet ground and swamps.

Alder trees, which fix nitrogen around their roots, are also soil-enriching blessing trees. The alder tree, which does not rot even when in water, appeared to be a source of great mystery to the ancients. However, the main reason why the ancient Celts worshipped the alder tree was its sap turns a deep red when exposed to air, as if cutting it would cause it to bleed.

The alder month is a time when the days lengthen, the winter chill slackens and the sun gains momentum, and the ancient Celts would have been uplifted by the blossoming of the alder and its various blessings. The alder tree, which sacrifices itself to fertilise the soil, was also considered sacred. While it was also said to protect the road leading to fairyland, it was also believed that if an alder was cut down, the person's house would burn down in a fire. According to Irish legend, the first man was made from an alder tree and the first woman was made from a rowan tree.

The alder is the totemic tree of Bran the Blessed, the god. He is a giant and king of Britain in Welsh mythology. According to legend, after fighting the Irish, Bran knew he was dying and ordered his fellows to cut off his head and bring it back to London. The party spent 7 years in Harlech and 80 years in Benbrook on the way, but Bran's head remained alive and undecomposed. Bran's head was buried in the White Hill below the Tower of London. Bran's totemic bird was the raven, so 2 ravens are kept at the Tower of London, but their wings have been clipped. This is because legend has it that if the ravens abandon the Tower of London and fly away, the UK will be destroyed.

Apparently, the ravens are loved and looked after, really well by the Beefeater Guards.

ケルト神話や北欧神話では、ハンノキを冬の眠りから覚ます「日が長くなる月」として知られていた。

広葉樹でありながら球果をつけるのはハンノキだけなので、冬にはひと目で見分けることができる。ハンノキの木は完全に水に浸かっても生きていけるので、小川、湖、川の岸辺や、湿地帯、沼地など、水辺でよく見かけることができる。

根の周囲に窒素を固定させるハンノキは、土壌を豊かにする恵みの木でもある。水の中にあっても腐らないハンノキは、古代人にとって特別な木に見えた。昔はハンノキを切り倒して沼沢地に道を造り、クラノグ(湖上住居)も、ハンノキで立てたのだ。しかし、古代ケルト人が、ハンノキを崇拝した最大の理由は、樹液が空気に触れると深い赤色になり、まるで切ると血が出るかのようだからだ。

ハンノキの月は、日脚が延びて、冬の寒気がゆるみ、日差しが勢いを増してくる時期であり、ハンノキの花開き、さまざまな恵みに古代ケルト人たちの気持ちも昂揚していただろう。また、自分を犠牲にして土壌を肥やすハンノキは神聖なものと考えられていた。妖精の国へ導く道を守るとも言われる一方で、ハンノキを切り倒すと��その人の家が火災にあって全焼するとも信じていた。アイルランドの伝説では、最初の男性はハンノキからつくられ、女性はナナカマドからつくられたことになっている。

ハンノキは、ウェールズ神話に登場する巨人であり、ブリテンの王であるブラン神のトーテムの木である。伝説によれば、アイルランド人と戦ったのち、死期が近づいているのを悟ったブランは、自分の首を刎ね、ロンドンまで持ち帰るよう仲間たちに命じた。一行は途中ハーレックで７年、ベンブルークで80年過ごしたものの、それでもブランの首は腐敗せず生き続けた。ブランの首はロンドン塔の下に広がる白い丘に埋葬された。ブランのトーテムの鳥はワタリガラスであったので、ロンドン塔ではワタリガラスが飼われているが、翼が切られている。ワタリガラスがロンドン塔を見捨てて飛んでいってしまうと英国は滅亡するという言い伝えがあるためである。

ロンドン塔のワタリガラスたちはビーフィーター・ガードたちに愛され、本当によく世話をしてもらっているそうです。

My take on the lyrics:

I have so much to say about this song because it has so many meanings on so many different layers.

So, let's start with the doll - a couple of times in the lyrics the words "schizophrenia" are said. The doll, therefore, can be a symbolism of someone living trapped in their own sick mind. They can't get away from it, can't escape, and in the end it turns them into nothing but a doll, lifeless, dependent, dead on the inside. The mentioned parasite can also be some sort of a description of a mental illness which lives inside of the head, brain, destroying it.

Now, the split, scattered personality - of a sick person, scattered personality of a parasite - to me it's sickness going around the body as the very small parts of a big entity. One doesn't know if the things are happening in reality or are just hallucinations.

Now something really fucking interesting because SO many birds are mentioned. Let's start with the common black bird - it symbolises luck, it is an omen of good changes and therefore, luring it in, giving it a luxurious bait it like inviting luck and good things to finally happen. The same goes with blue bird - they are generally associated with the concepts of joy, happiness, and harmony, symbol of hope and positivity. Only the illusion of this bird keeps one going and they hold onto it for their dear life. But, being this detached and this tied to an illusion is like caging oneself - thus the mention of the birdcage, of being locked by a bluebird rather than it bringing one to happiness.

And then, the lyrics also mention sky burial - which literally means bird-scattered and is a funeral practice when the corpses are placed high up to decompose, which results in wild animals and birds eating the flesh.

One interpretation in my opinion is like, the schizophrenic person imagining oneself this scenario - thus they are unsure if it's nightmare or hallucination.

But from the other side, it may also describe a person undergoing this scenario after death - and a doll in this case would mean a corpse, and everything else would be the thoughts of scattered consciousness that remain long enough to witness that end.

東北のある地域に伝わる儀式

うちの地域に伝わる"ある伝統行事"を世に広めてほしい。

そう頼まれたのは、一昨日の明朝でした。

その日はたまたま大きな町に立ち寄ったということもあり、採った宿も比較的豪勢で、夕餉をいただいた合同の宴会場もとても賑やかなものでした。

一度も顔を合わせたことのない者同士でも肩を組み合い、大声で笑い合って、浴びるように酒を飲んでは給仕を口説いたり踊ったりして、また飲んで。

ジジイも久しぶりに熱燗を嗜み、気を良くして絡んで来やがるのがウザかったことをよく覚えています。

そんな騒がしい酒の席も夜が更ければやがて鎮まり、そろそろ太陽が顔を出すのではないか。そんな時でした。

「失礼。貴方のお隣の翁は、もしやかの高名な俳聖松尾芭蕉殿ではございませんか」

声をかけてきたのは、三十路前後の青年でした。

「高名とは滅相もないですよこんなジジイ」

「いやいや、そんな。…けどご本人様、なのですよね？」

「ええ、まあ。」

「そうでしたか！ …それは光栄だ。私人の手を借りたい事柄を抱えているものですから、もし俳聖のお力をお借りできるのであれば、是非ともと思いまして」

「芭蕉さんの、ですか？」

聞き返すと、妙な光の宿る目で彼は頷きました。

それから話半分で詳細を聞いてみると、「うちの地域に伝わる"ある伝統行事"を世に広めてほしい」とのことでした

何でも彼の地元の地域には 一風変わった風習があるらしく、それは伝統行事や祭りごとというよりも、"儀式"に近いものなのだそうです。

つまるところその"儀式"の様子を、芭蕉さんが俳句にして詠み、世に発表することで存在を知らしめてほしいのだと、。

そういった説明をされました。

…なるほど、これは面白いかもしれません

だって年中スランプなジジイにとって良い刺激になるかもしれないじゃないですか。

どんな風習かは分かりませんが、当事者である彼自身が「変わってる」と表現するくらいですから、きっと珍しい行為が行われているのでしょうし

それについて芭蕉さんがどんな反応を見せるのかも、気になるじゃないですか？

この手の言い回しをするだなんて、きっと"因習"の可能性高いですよ。

…ということで、引き請けることにしたんです。

芭蕉さんには夜が明けてから事の経緯を説明しました。酒にめっぽう強い芭蕉さんはやはりケロッと目を覚まして、すぐに快諾してくれました。（最初 めんどくさがってたんで試しに一発パンチしてみたら言うことを聞きました）

出発は巳の刻直前。件の彼の案内で、該当地域まで移動しました。

町から然程遠くはなく、一刻程歩くと到着したくらいでしょうか。

その地域に入ると、彼は僕たちを自宅に招いてくださいまして。唐代の宮殿さながらの 荘厳で広大な邸宅に、芭蕉さんは大はしゃぎ…

恐らく地域一帯を治める地主か、領主の家系なんでしょうね。

彼はその家の次男らしく、僕たちはひとけのない小さな倉へと案内されました。

そこで、こんなものを見せられました。

それは粘土を固めたような、土臭いお面でした。

最初に倉に入った時、これには白い布が被せられていて、布を剥ぐ前には 「決して面と目を合わせないでください」とも言われまして。それもかなり念入りにね（芭蕉さんとんでもなくビビってました）

これを承諾すると布が剥がされ、彼は"儀式"について説明してくださいました。

"儀式"の詳細は、以下にまとめさせていただきます。

◆この地域に伝わる"儀式"について

儀式の名称･･･ 降来 (コウレイ)[kou-lei]

概要･･･ 一般的な葬祭(葬儀や供養等)はせず、その

代わりに行う。死者が無事冥府へと辿り

着けるよう、その迎えの者を呼び出す儀

式だとか

時期･･･ 身内の死去後すぐ

用いる道具･･･ ◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️(面の名前)、懐刀

◆儀式の流れ

(一) 身内が亡くなったら、湯灌して奥座敷に三日安置する。下一枚目間取図参照。この間に諸々の準備をする。関係者への声がけや、会場の設営など。下二枚目簡易図参照。

(二) 翌明朝、正面から見て鳥居の右側に遺体を置き、左側に喪主が立つ。喪主は左前にした束帯を着用し、◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️を被る。懐刀は左手に持っておく。

(三) 日の出を合図に舞を舞う。（懐刀で地を切り開くような所作が主になっているとのこと）

(四) 舞が終わったら、目の前の鳥居をくぐり遺体と目を合わせながら「○○さん(亡くなった方の下の名前)、来ましたよ」と呼びかける。

(五) ここで遺体の顔が微笑んでいれば儀式は成功。しかし微笑む以外の表情をしていた場合は失敗と見做され、鳥居の左側に戻った瞬間 喪主は斬首される。（その首は七日間の間境内に捧げられる）

尚、儀式の最中は決して◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️と目を合わせてはいけない。遺族や参列者だけがという訳ではなく、たまたま通りかかっただけの人間もNG（肉眼で確認できる距離であればどれほど遠巻きでもダメだそうです）

もし目が合えば、その者は降来(コウレイ)している者に連れていかれるという。

儀式については、以上となります。

確かに、大分変わった印象を受けました。変わったというより、恐ろしいと表現した方が適切かもしれません。

芭蕉さんなんて途中から悲鳴をあげる余裕もなく、凝視するように開いた瞳孔と強張った表情で彼の話を聞いていました。

「成程。儀式については分かりました。………しかし今も◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️と目を合わせてはいけない理由は何ですか？ 儀式の最中ではありませんよね。」

「はい。…ですが儀式でない時に目が合うと、その者は喪主になってしまうんです」

「喪主に…ですか？」

「えっ。それってどういうこと……？」

「そのままの意味です。ふつう喪主は亡くなられた方の一番近しい等身者、つまり親であれば子、子であれば親、親が居ない場合は長男か弟………などが該当しますよね。けれどうちの地域では、人が亡くなるとその方との"縁"が深い親族が集まり皆で◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️を見つめるんです。そしてその中で目が合ったたった一人を、喪主とするんですよ。けれど時たま、本当にごく稀にですが、複数人と目が合うことがあるんです。二人の時もあれば、十人の時もあったそうです。それは一斉に喪主を決める行為の前後でうっかり◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️を見てしまった場合も、例外ではありません。親族ではない者だったとしても、喪主にさせられてしまいます。まあその場合は、順番に◼️◼️◼️◼️◼️を被って舞うんですが………とにかく誰かが亡くなって、儀式が始まるまでの間が期限なんです」

「そんな………じゃあ私ももし目が合ったらさ、喪主になっちゃうってこと？ で儀式失敗したら殺されちゃうってこと…？！」

「そうなりますねバカジジイ」

「ひっ………」

芭蕉さんの情けない声は相変わらず滑稽でした。

して聞くところによると、不遇なことに今度の喪主は彼自身なのだそうです。

だから儀式が成功しようと失敗しようと、この儀式の様子を詠み世間に向けて表沙汰にしてほしいのだと。

壊してください。

そう懇願しておりました。

………………え？ 芭蕉さんの答え……？

勿論ノーですよ。

「嫌だよ怖いよ！」の一点張りで一向に話が進まなかったので、また一発いかせてもらいました。（しぶとかったのでもう二、三発追加させていただいたことはざらですが。）

この日は怖くて眠れなかったらしいです。

いい気味だ
