At least they weren’t one of his ‘Angels’. “What?” He finally asked wanting them to get to the point. They were just ranting at him and he wondered if they even cared what he thought.

I can't lie, the news about Ice Adolescence is heartbreaking, mostly because of its inevitability. Yuri on Ice was a show I desperately needed at the exact moment I desperately needed it. Even now, when I get into a really bad spiral, listening to the soundtrack helps ease some of that weight. It's also a show that I wrote fanfic for before my writing career really took off, and I loved playing with characters and plots, finding ways to weave together all the threads I loved most from the show.

So, yes, while the news is depressing as hell, I'm going to cling to the good things that came from that flashpoint magical show and celebrate them. That includes revisiting some of my old fics and appreciating the comments and friendships I gained from the fandom when I was writing for it. Without further ado...

I can see it changing the night completely. Maybe if Yuuri had his phone, he wouldn't have gotten drunk at all. Yes, in the original he was actively trying to bury his emotions and forget his problems, but always having a drink in hand (or something to nibble on, but we'll concentrate on drinks because of the specific context) is also classic behavior for socially awkward or not-up-to-interaction-right-now and yet forced to be at a party. The built in excuse to look busy and/or avoid talking even when cornered because the mouth is occupied....only trumped by "looking down at my phone so I don't need to make eye contact either." And once Yuuri starts looking at his phone (or is allowed to continue looking at his phone as the case may be, because, yes, Celestino probably confiscated it in the original canon when Yuuri wouldn't stop seeking out the worst comments about his free skate, but I think he could have been convinced to relent on the argument that Yuuri thought his family might call again) then he would also get sucked into the distraction, obsessing over the words on the screen to the point where he forgets to be drivne to drink--still intending to bury himself in champagne to feel better...at some point...after he replies to one more thread on twitter that's making him feel worse...

But wouldn't that make for a boring divergence? Yuuri holed up in the corner on his phone and not becoming the life of the party and subject of albums full of blackmail photos or causing Victor to fall head over heels? Maybe, though it would be interesting in and of itself to see everything change if he never caught Victor's attention before the viral skate was posted and there was no talk of Victor becoming his coach to plant the idea in Victor's head, and so there was little reaction beyond a like from the v-nikiforov account on the triplets' video and then everyone (but the triplets) forgetting it happened.

But we want instant gratification here so consider that while reading criticisms of his free skate, interrupted by incoming condolence texts about both the Grand Prix and Vicchan, and then combing through photos of Vicchan in his photo gallery, Yuuri inevitably starts to cry again. Then Yuri Plisetsky, becoming the human version of the "How many times do we need to teach you this lesson, Old Man?" Spongebob quote, stomps over (because of course he was closely watching Yuuri from across the room, for reasons that he will deny and are NONE OF ANYBODY'S BUSINESS, SHUT UP) and starts screaming, unheeding of how much attention he attracts.

Victor follows him like a good babysitter and apologizes to Yuuri. "He doesn't know how to behave around people. I voted that we should kennel him along with Makkachin, but Yakov thought it was important that he compete in the final for the Juniors for some reason. Now what's wrong and how can I help?"

 Victor doesn't actually want to ask at first of course. Crying people make him uncomfortable, as we know, but Little Yuri's behavior forces his involvement and, well, seeing Yuuri cry hurts for some reason. 

Yuuri opens up about Vicchan and Victor and Yuri both become instantly 1000% more committed to this cheer up endeavor (First step is not yelling abuse at him, Yuri). 

And then...Hmmm....I'm not sure 

And coming back to see this stream of consciousness response saved in my drafts weeks later I'm still not sure where I would go with this idea except a general "dance battles still happen and photos of a more posed type are taken and numbers are exchanged. Yuuri doesn't bomb Nationals and finishes the season while often texting his new long distance friends with as much flirting as adivce coming from Victor" and then it becomes fuzzy from there and doesn't yet *pop* as an au like it would need to

Let's play out another take:

THE ACCIDENTAL CATFISHING OF YUURI KATSUKI

Yuuri still gets balckout drunk at the baquet. He dances with everyone, strips for the pole, begs Vic to coach him, probably makes out sloppily with Victor until Victor summons restraint or someone else pulls them apart, and so forth all the usual escapades. Everything is the same except Yuuri has pictures and video of his own perspective of the banquet. A selfie series of him and his various dance partners and a mini video journal documenting how soft Victor's hair is in real life and how "WE ARE IN LOVE NOW AND HE'S GOING TO COOOOACH ME, MY VICTORUUU" is a must.

There are also two new contacts in his phone "Rude Russian" and "Better and Sexier Russian." Drunk Yuuri's idea of a joke, obviously, Hungover Yuuri --who remembers nothing but will freak out once he sees the pictures--figures.  Rude Russian must be that little punk that kicked down the bathroom door. As for "sexier and better"....well, he knows who that must be also.

He ignores both contacts for awhile, even when both text him, but eventually he's convinced, probably by Phichit, to not let this opportunity pass him by. He obviously charmed Victor on the dance floor, now he just needs to keep it up through text--which is easy since he can preplan his responses and make every word perfect. It's low pressure and he doesn't have to worry about seeing Victor in person and having a live conversation until Worlds unless he wants to set something up sooner. 

So Yuuri starts texting Better and Sexier Russian and charming him. Just friendly charming though. No sexting. He doesn't want to make Victor think Sober Yuuri is desperate after Drunk Yuuri probably already gave him that impression.

Yuuri deletes Rude Russian's messages or maybe does respond, but with a polite message about how he enjoyed meeting him, even though he really didn't enjoy that much he can remember, and "I can see from the pictures that we had fun in our dance battle, but I don't see what we would have to talk about now" that distances himself. He'd offer to send skating critiques or advice but he remembers the volatile little punk from the bathroom and decides better of it. Better just to say goodbye. 

Except....".Rude Russian" was actually a call out toward Victor Commemorative Photo Nikiforov and "Better and Sexier Russian" was Yuri grabbing Yuuri's phone and imputting his own contact after Yuuri told him "I don't need your number. I already have a Russian's number in there" 

Yuuri is unknowingly trying to start a long distance relationship with Yuri Plisetsky and told Victor not to contact him. 

I don't know how long the misunderstanding could be kept up though, but there's a lot of humor potential and of course at the end Yuri will have to matchmake the actual Victor with Yuuri

it occurs to me that probably the most plausible explanation for why Victor and Yuuri didn't trade phone numbers at the Sochi banquet, and why Yuuri himself has no photos or videos of same, is Yuuri just didn't bring his phone

martin blackwood: figures he should probably fight as well. surprisingly decent at it, mostly using unconventional tactics. will end up getting tangled up in the mummies or invisible men somehow, because those are things he has no experience fighting. 

yuri plisetsky: useless in a crisis; ducking and getting the hell out of the way, while being mad about another stupid disaster in this stupid town

noah czerny and loid forger: also just staying out of the chaos for the most part, though they’ll both be trying to find their friends/family first.

orpheus and blathers: scared out of their minds, trying to help but probably just getting in the way more than anything. 

liu qingge: stabbing/punching/slaying monsters very seriously.

sha hualing: stabbing/punching/slaying monsters but having FUN about it

dongfang qingcang: could fight, but lacks the motivation to help literally anyone but himself. 

wen kexing: same as dongfang qingcang, except he’s looking out for himself, a-xu, chengling, and a-xiang, and that’s it. 

he xuan: probably still just munching at the food table, unbothered.

or: yuri plisetsky, the small, angry and desperate child, a discussion

because that's the thing about yura: he's a child, he's 15. rn he's still figuring a lot of things out and the thing is, he's never exactly been given time to figure them out, bc as we've been told he's been skating + competing from a very young age (even moving cities to train), and also bc he doesn't have any family outside his aging grandfather + an absent mother (?) - and that's the heart of everything, really. most of yura's interactions center around skating; he doesn't know how to handle things not skating bc he doesn't have much outside of it.  and that uncertainty is so obvious in how he interacts with people, especially viktor and yuuri (+ otabek later on); he also doesn't know how to handle his own emotions bc he's had to set himself aside all this time for skating (something reflected in viktor throughout the series).

think about this: yura's spent his career catching up to viktor, who's essentially the "goal" yura has set for himself; he's hungry for approval in the one way he knows how to be validated: skating. but just when he thinks he's going to take a step closer to his goal (by making his senior debut), viktor leaves. he tosses aside skating to fly off to japan in an incredibly irresponsible manner, completely forgetting yura; how hurt do you think he was? desperate, determined, driven yura who's been pushing himself to catch up, to prove himself;  viktor's career is what yura's been trying so hard to reach and so to see viktor carelessly toss it aside, treat it so irresponsibly --  yura is angry, betrayed, and hurt, bc that's a huge slap to his sense of worth; if viktor can just leave things behind, what does that mean for him? 

(and man can you talk about all the ways viktor nikiforov is a massive self-centered asshole but that's a different story) (i love him though)

and then when viktor finally does notice him, it's just to use him to get to yuuri. onsen on ice made yura realize viktor had no intentions of giving him anything; even the short program - yura has a week, and then vitya never coaches him on it again. [see this thread for additional discussion]  

and so yura spends most of the season trying to demand that validation, except since he's ??? about personal interaction+feelings, he goes about it in really bad ways, all with the underlying sentiment of "notice me, acknowledge me" bc he's desperate for validation since he doesn't have it anywhere else; he's also desperate for viktor to stop freaking using him but acknowledge him as the skater he is, not just as a child he can subject to his whims/use as he feels. yura wants to be taken seriously. 

(and if you notice, his most aggravated reactions are usually to and about viktor; apart from the bathroom scene + kicking, he's not as harsh on yuuri - basically he's only aggressive to the people he knows don't take him seriously, bc in the end that's all he wants but it's what people keep not giving him; and that's a frustration i think we all understand).

regarding yuuri tho, yura is absolutely envious of yuuri, and not just bc he gets to have viktor’s acknowledgement. try and imagine how yura felt flying to hasetsu and seeing yuuri's family, how they and the whole town support him; how loved yuuri is bc of and outside of his skating. and think about how yura has none of that for himself: his mom is absent, his grandpa loves him but is rarely able to be with him (and think about how he stood off the ice for so long, wondering if his grandpa was going to arrive, waiting like he's probably been waiting for people all his life); all his other relationships (yakov, lilia, viktor, yuuri) are based on his skating but not on himself as a person. is it any wonder he's resentful when yuuri has all these things he doesn't? (or perceives he doesn't, bc he's never been shown otherwise)

(and here is where otabek is so important: otabek isn't using yura to achieve something. he sees yura as just yura, acknowledges him, and doesn't expect/demand anything of him; beka recognizes him and is simply there for him; beka echoes his struggle for validation)

and this is why i love the "viktor nikiforov is dead" scene, bc it's a turning point for yura as a person+skater; he's starting to realize that he doesn't need to childishly demand viktor’s validation, especially since he's come to terms with how viktor is more flawed than he (and anyone else tbh) realized; it's his declaration that he's over viktor, over his desperate chase for affirmation from viktor -- and then he goes, takes the routine that viktor had shamelessly abandoned him with, and slaps him in the face with it by breaking viktor’s record + winning over his protege, in the most beautiful "fuck you and the way you've been treating me" statement. it's also here that he begins to acknowledge he's been perceiving things wrongly; he starts to grow up, just a bit, bc yuuri isn't the only one who realizes things on the ice -- yura's evolved too. his agape isn't just his grandfather; it's the realization that people care about him and think he is worth something even if he isn't flawless on the ice (he can be worth something even with no conditions) (but fuck y'all he's gonna be perfect out there anyway)

basically, his anger is a great big cover up for his insecurity + his desperate need for validation, and his way of asking for it bc he doesn't know how else to do so + how else for him to be taken seriously. and it’s so important that he’s now starting to get that, now starting to demand he be recognized as who he is instead of who people define him to be.

Basic Rules!

Minimun of a paragraph for reply, starters can be shorter.

Exclusively on posts, Dms can be used to chat casually or for plotline discussions.

Asks can be Ooc, starters or simple questions for the characters.

Specify the muse.

Crossovers can be done between fandoms listed under the rules (otherwise it's recommended we talk it out first), otherwise I might don't know the media and that wouldn't be fun for either of us.

I do post-canon by default, so muses will have their age adjusted to that at the moment of answering asks or starting threads, unless specified otherwise.

Reglas básicas!

Mínimo de un párrafo por respuesta. Starters pueden ser más cortos.

Roleo exclusivamente en posts, no en chats. El chat se puede usar para decir que hacer en dichos roleplays o para hablar casualmente.

Las preguntas pueden ser tanto para los personajes como para mí (Ooc), acepto preguntas o starters.

Siempre especifica con quien quieres hablar.

En este blog las musas están escritas exclusivamente en post-canon y sus edades están ajustadas como tal, al menos de que se especifique de otro modo.

God that's genuinely tough because I've rp'd so many characters the past almost ten years (I'm legit days away from my 10th anniversary of my first RP blog). I think Sharon Rainsworth from Pandora Hearts, Pidge Gunderson from Voltron, Yuri Plisetsky from Yuri on Ice, and Bakugou are some top muses of mine that immediately come to mind.

Short, medium, or long threads?

I think short or medium length. Anything over two or three paragraphs gets harder for me to write in one go (or in a timely enough manner at least).

Slice of life or plotted ideas?

I think a mix of both is a good way to go for me. Like having an overarching plot or ship to write and do slice of life stuff in addition to specifically plotted stuff all the while.

He hadn’t meant to tease Isabel but he felt his cheeks warm and head swoon at the thought of how he had just turned the other on with just some simple stretches. He’d apologize if he knew how. He wasn’t naive per say but very new and awkward still with flirting and relationships. He’d tease and give Otabek very blatant invitations to do as he pleased with him but he knew the Kazakh skater loved him too much to every forcefully follow through on any of it. Yuri felt super horrible now that he thought of how much of a tease he’d been being.

              He was precocious yes, but still so innocent and just becoming aware of his beauty and it power. He could be bratty too at times which didn’t help things either. So he handed Beka over his leopard print backpack before taking his other hand for them to leave. He got on Otabek’s bike with flushed red cheeks and an expression soft and graceful but distant in thought. He had figured a way to make up for being so unfair.

As soon as Yuri handed over his bag and the two were on Otabek’s motorcycle, Otabek found himself able to think clearly again. Everything with Yuri was so new it just felt so intense all the time. He really wasn’t used to feeling so much all at once. The wind billowing around them as they rushed through the city seemed to do just the trick to calm the emotions swirling within Otabek. Riding the motorcycle though the city with Yuri always felt right, ever since Barcelona. With the Russian’s arms wrapped around his waist the Kazakh man was content and felt like himself again. When they arrived at the rink Otabek got off the bike in his practiced manner and offered  his hand to Yuri so that he could dismount gracefully. He held onto the Russian’s bag, determined to still be a gentleman. “Shall We?”, he asked earnestly as he reached out for Yuri’s hand once again.
