you know that scene from the simpsons where bart breaks down to miss krabappel cause he failed a test but this time he tried?
for some reason that reminds a lot of what james would be like as student, especially in the middle years of hogwarts.
i imagine james in the earlier years as one of those kids who never paid attention in class properly, always did homework last minute and never revised but always managed to pass. passed every test, handed their homework in somewhat on time. but he never did amazing. in the first three years of hogwarts, he was never near the top of the class. if anything, he was close to the bottom.
all in all, he scrapped by and was fine with it. the grades never bothered him and he never tried to change it.
but then work got harder, and there was more pressure and expectations to do well and all his friends were getting better, getting praise and recognition. they were getting well above passing grades, never failing exams and had something to be proud of... and james was still scrapping by. a mark or two above failing, going as far as to being made to resit exams and essays and projects cause it's fifth year and exams are around the corner and he wasn't getting it.
so he gets put in private study sessions with mcgonagall, or otherwise he'd have to get pulled out of quidditch. that was mcgonagall's compromise. cause she believed him enough to help, something no other teacher did. he was basically failing all classes cause he wasn't trying.
and due to the threat on his place on the team, he actually started trying. he spent all his free time in the library, stopped putting all his focus on pranks, even convinced remus to help him study. he did everything he needed to do for it, spending every waking hour thinking about it. put extra effort into all his other subjects and homework. he participated in class, did the tasks done and went to every study sessions with mcgonagall.
and then when the next exam rolled around in mcginagall's class, he put his all into it. worked from the very first second and to the very last... and failed. full on failed. didn't even get a passing grade.
and i just imagine have this converstion being like...
m: 'i thought things would different this time,'
j: 'same...'
m: 'what went wrong?'
j: 'i don't know, i thought i was doing good'
m: ‘me too, this tell me otherwise’
j: ‘i tried’
m: ‘did you though james, have you been trying without me’
j: *crying* ‘yes! i have, i really tried this time mcgonagall, i really did! i read every book and spent all my time studying and did everything i needed to do! i really tried, you need to believe me, i need you to believe me, you can ask my friends will vouch for me, i did try! i want to do better, i tried so hard this time i swear!’
and this fail was the first fail which hurt because he really did try. this was the fail which got him to try harder in the later years of Hogwarts.
i just think about that scene a lot. cause i feel like James is a very smart person, but just isn’t an academic person. not at the beginning at least…

Remus doesn’t thinks he’s hot as fuck because he isn’t his own type. His type is pretty boys with light eyes and devilish grins. He is a giant with no coordination and a pension for grandpa sweaters. This is why he’s immediately attracted to Sirius. Even Regulus and Barty trip him up once in awhile. Remus Lupin has a fucking type, okay.
James, on the other hand, is attracted to personality and vibes. His type is mean, a nice smile, and long fingers. This is why he knows he’s fucking hot, because his vibes are immaculate. This is also why he’s had a crush on Sirius, Remus, Lily, Regulus, Dorcas, Frank, and Marlene.
They’re both messes.

Some thoughts on Lily Evans (Headcanons and other musings)
Headcanon things
---I think she really struggled internally about "not belonging" in both the muggle and wizard community. I couldn't imagine finding out I was part of some special group that made my family members ostracize me, THEN joining said new community to find that I am actually discriminated against and considered lesser. I don't think she was on the nerd level of say Hermione, but I think she really wanted to prove herself.
--I don't think she wore a bra. I use this in my fics a lot not just because it could be taken sexy, but because it would've been trendy at the time in the 70s. I think Lily would have kept up with the politics of the muggles and the wizarding world, and I would imagine she would be keen to follow the feminist movement.
--I'm really not of fan of the swarmy, bookish version of Lily that purveyed often in fics (I see more diversity now but back 10 years ago Lily was like some studious angel all the time.) We know she was smart and teachers loved her, but we also see a lot of anger and cheekiness from her too. I think James wouldn’t have been half as attracted to her if she was just a know it all. I imagine she was really sarcastic and quippy.
--I think Lily thought about fancying Remus in earlier years---to the point that in 4th year she turned on him quickly one day during prefects rounds and kissed him, immediately realized she felt nothing, and then they both agreed to stay friends and never speak of it (James would have died if he knew). After then, Lily had the habit of giving him a kiss on the cheek as greeting/goodbye (think of it as the french bisous, not like a real cheek kiss) and Sirius would always joke about "Where his kiss was"---which prompted Lily to draw real close to him ( making James feel jealous and uncomfortable) before yelling at him to fuck off.
--When Sirius and Lily became friends, they really became friends. They both confided in each other about being the family outsiders, they spent lots of study time listening to music, and she was always able to keep up with his sarcastic and self deprecating style of humor. Whenever Sirius would conjure rock music to play in the corridors, Lily always was the last of the prefects to put a stop to it. She would often spend time in the boys dorms even if James wasn't there to shoot the shit with Sirius and she often was his insider into all the cool muggle things he missed out on.
---Petunia peddled the idea that Lily was a "Hippie type" to Vernon and her friends upon being questioned and Lily really leaned into this gladly. She was very amused by the muggle occult craze in the 60s-70s and found a lot of enjoyment visiting muggle "esoteric shops" and getting books from them. This trait would later be adopted by the marauders who would take some of her muggle “occult magic” books and try to reproduce the (ridiculously fake) spells (often leading in explosions or very bad consequences seeing as the muggle “spells” were all a hoax and couldn’t stand up to real magical attempts). When she was home from the summer it was not uncommon for her to be reading a book by Aleister Crowley on the front stoop.
---Lily hated flying despite James' many tries to get her to enjoy it (he mostly liked that she was scared and held onto him more). Contrary to this, she loved Sirius motorbike. It felt more natural to her despite still being a flying object ( and despite both James and Sirius flying it in the most haphazard way possible.)
--One thing that drew Lily to James was his interest and love for muggle pop culture. I imagine Lily tried often to get Snape to listen to Joni Mitchell or have a laugh at how muggles depicted wizards/witches in film, but Snape didn't see the worth in doing those things---wanting to focus on the wizarding world. James on the other hand ate all of it up--he would jump at the chance to watch Carrie or The Wicker Man. Even before dating James, I think Snape's disdain for all things muggle was off putting to Lily, who saw just as much to learn from muggles as she did from the wizarding world.
Reference things
---I base a lot of my fic Petunia/Lily relationships off of the British show Fleabag. I HIGHLY recommend it and I think its a great example of two sisters who are completely at odds with each other. I think Lily and Petunia's relationship would be much more complicated obviously due to their reasoning for falling out, but I think in general its a great depiction of two sisters who don't get along. I admittedly have cradled their dialogue patterns for scenes. ( Its on Amazon prime really really really go watch it its amazing)
---One of my big references for Lily ( and James for that matter) is Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza. I think the love story of the two main characters who are at odds against the world really works and its the typical Jily "one is madly in love with the other and does schemes to win her over while she's sarcastic and wary and grows to love him despite it all." Its also the 70s which helps a lot ( for me). I think also Alana Haim's character is a perfect lily as she's someone who is a bit lost despite having everything going for her on paper. I highly reccomend it if you haven't seen it.

"are you crying?" from the prompt list (also hi gabby 🤗)
hi zar! so funny story. I completely forgot about this ask and game until I was sitting in class today not paying attention and thinking about this little scene and then I realized it fit the prompt you gave me so I used it. Even though I'm supposed to be focusing on so many other things right now... I wanted to write Regulus with Harry so that's what I did <3
"Papa, are you crying?"
Regulus' breath hitches at the noise. He would've thought if anyone would catch him like this it would've been James, he was kinda expecting it honestly. He didn't think it would be little feet running over to him, and a soft voice so small it weakens his heart every time he hears it. Through his blurred vision, he sees Harry rushing towards him, his little Spiderman shoes lighting up with every step he takes. He takes no hesitation clambering onto Regulus' lap.
"Hi, mon cheri," Regulus murmurs, his voice catching on each word, keeping Harry steady, even if his hands are shaking.
Harry's face scrunches up, "What's wrong?"
Regulus opens his mouth to speak but no explanation comes. His chest caves in more with every breath he takes. He wouldn't give the real one, even if he had one, but he can't come up with a false one either. The panicked breaths and brittle chest are something he's so familiar with, and yet it feels like a new feeling now. It's been so long since it's overtaken him, that he's not sure what to do with it. He learned things to make it better. He's learned the signs so he can call someone to help talk him down. He felt them now too, but he brushed it off. He feels sixteen. He never thought he'd feel sixteen again.
It's stupid. He knows it's not just something that goes away, it's built within him, and yet he had so much hope.
"Papa?" Harry calls out again, his fingers reaching out for the side of Regulus' face. Regulus almost wants to push him away, little tendrils reach for his brain begging him to find a quiet corner far from the light, but he doesn't. He just tries to take another breath, even if it comes out more like a wheeze.
Regulus wants to be able to explain this to him. He wants to explain that he's okay, he's just a little panicked for no good reason. He hates worrying him, especially for things like this. He's too young to see this. Regulus never wanted him to see this.
Harry sits back before suggesting, "Do you want a hug?"
Regulus' chest splits in two. He squeezes his eyes shut, trying again to take a deep breath but it's hard, and the most he can do is a hitched breath before he's consumed by it again. He feels himself nod even if anyone else's touch would feel like sandpaper against his skin right now.
Harry wastes no time wrapping his arms around his shoulders and pushing his face into his neck. Regulus holds him back keeping his eyes closed. He can feel his tears soak into Harry's shirt. He didn't even realize he was crying until Harry asked him about it, he couldn't feel anything, but he feels it now. It's an endless ache, not enough to really hurt him, but he feels it still.
It's been years since he's felt this trapped. He's not other sure what word to use even if it doesn't sound quite right. He grew up as nothing more than a kid trapped in his room. Trapped in a life he didn't want with no options of leaving it. Trapped in skin that didn't feel like his own and a brain that was working overtime to go against him. He's better now. He got out of his parent's house, and he fell in love with a man who showed him all the colors he could only dream of before. He has Harry now. He loves his life. He's even surprised to admit that but he does. He has no reason to feel trapped. He has no reason for his chest to fail him, but here it is caving in again.
Sirius used to tell him there's no straight line for progress. It's not linear. Going backward doesn't truly mean going back, you're always moving forward even if it doesn't feel like it. Regulus doesn't know. He thinks he might've believed it once. He tries to. He tries to be good. He just thinks no matter where he is in his life he'll always be that sad little kid who's trapped in his childhood bedroom. He's afraid it'll never leave him.
"Daddy's taking me to the park," Harry tells him, still refusing to let go. James taught him to not let go first if someone really needed a hug, and Regulus isn't ready to let go yet.
He can't manage to say anything, he only hums instead, feeling the texture of Harry's sweater underneath his fingertips.
"Do you wanna come?" Harry asks him, "We can go on the swings."
Regulus hums again, he wants to say more but all he can manage is, "Sure."
"Good," Harry tells him, "I like when you come."
Regulus' heart aches, but it's a good one this time, he takes a breath. It's shaky but it still fills his lungs all the same. He takes another letting his shoulders drop. He pulls away and finds Harry still smiling softly at him, it's like taking a first breath after you've just almost drowned.
"Better?" Harry asks.
Regulus only manages to nod before kissing the top of his head.
He doesn't have the time to say anything else before James is walking through the doorway, "Kiddo, you ready to go? I thought-" he cuts himself off.
"I'm okay," Regulus beats him to it, letting Harry off his lap.
James' eyes still flicker over him like he's trying to find an open wound he can stitch closed, "What happened?"
Regulus shakes his head, "Just..." he sighs, he knows he can't get out of it. James has never been known to just let these things go. "Worked myself up," he ends up on, "It's okay now."
James doesn't seem convinced, he opens his mouth to say something else but Harry beats him to it.
"Papa's going to the park with us," he says, grabbing at his hand to bring him to stand.
James looks over at him, "Are you-"
"I'm okay," he tells him, giving into Harry's pulling on his arm. He can't make it to the door before James stops him, forcing Harry to slip from his grip making a break for the door.
"Reg..."
Regulus sighs, "I'll talk about it later, okay?"
James' gaze flickers between his eyes before he nods, "Alright," he says, "If you promise you're-"
"James," Regulus stops him, "I'm fine."
Before either of them can say anything Harry's voice calls out from the hall, "Hurry up!"
Regulus smiles softly, "If we leave him waiting he'll kill us you know it."
James rolls his eyes, kissing his cheek, "Yeah, yeah let's go."
James goes through the door first. Regulus stays back to take a breath, he thinks he still feels that crack in the middle of his chest. He knows it'll never go away, but maybe he's okay with that, for a moment anyway. The water doesn't always have to be violent, it can be kind and innocent too.
"Papa! Come on!"
Regulus lets out his breath, dispersing the ocean around him, "I'm coming!"

“Why didn’t you- when Sirius left,” James takes a deep breath, readying himself. “Why didn’t you leave, too?” James finds himself whispering, the words coming out in soft breaths, almost as if he was afraid of scaring Regulus off into the harrowing night.
The orange lights from overhead illuminated his face. His hair had gotten long, reaching the tops of his shoulders. James’ hands ached to brush them off his face, just to make sense of his expression. He looked out into the distance, eyes refusing to reach his. James wondered if he would ever respond.
But eventually he does.
“You already know, James.” He sounds exhausted in a way that makes his skin prickle with anxiety.
Maybe James did, maybe he just wanted to absolve his guilt. This was selfish.
The silence stretches between them until it’s something that cloaks over both their shoulders. Until it suffocates and presses upon James’ throat.
When Regulus speaks, it is in a flat voice.
“I had to stay behind for my family,” Monotone. Rehearsed. Reserved.
He hated that, he hated that Regulus ever thought James would be stupid enough to believe it. Maybe once it would’ve worked. Maybe once he really was that naïve. Once, when the arrogance of youth hadn’t left his bones broken and bruised.
Now he knew better. The tug of guilt in his heart wasn’t enough to stop the words from toppling out.
“Were you afraid?” James looks up at him. Grey eyes sparkle under the warm glow, still turned away.
For once, Regulus doesn’t hesitate. He replies immediately, not skipping a beat.
“No.”
“Well then what were you?” James bites back, a flair of unjustified anger overtaking him.
“I was logical. I was pragmatic.” Back to the detached tone. The lies he told himself.
“That’s bullshit and you know it.”
Regulus finally breaks his stare-off with the sea. He looks at James, and at once he realizes just how different Regulus and Sirius were. Had it been Sirius he was speaking to, the hurl of petty, teetering on hurtful, replies would have been never ending. And they had. The way Sirius accused James of charity work, of messing with him, of giving offers he couldn’t uphold. A hero complex.
He expected all these accusations to tumble out of Regulus’ mouth just as easily as they had out of Sirius’. They didn’t.
Was it the only child in him? Did he expect all siblings to act in identical ways?
Regulus saw through James. It scared him in ways he couldn’t possibly fathom.
The silence makes itself known again.
“Happiness like that is fickle. I couldn’t trust myself around it. I would’ve smashed it up till my fingers bled.” he said, eyes piercing through the distance between them.
Simple, like they were discussing the weather or which Quidditch teams they liked. Like it wasn’t something that fractured assumptions and mindsets James has spent years believing.
He didn’t know what to say to that. It wasn’t fear, but now he wished it was.
“That’s not- it’s not how it would’ve went.” His words sounded weak, flimsy. They were. Was he certain that Regulus, the quiet boy he’d once been - who seemed so dead-set to bring about his own misery - did he trust him not to take apart up whatever careful placement he and Sirius had built?
It was an egregious thought. A shameful one that made James almost rue Regulus for ever suggesting it.
James busies his hand with holding on to the rails, to avoid Regulus’ eyes.
They don’t say anything beyond that. This wasn’t something James could fix. He looks out into the sea.

You told your family for a reason, You couldn't keep it in- Regulus talking abt him & james
Your sister splashed out on the bottle- petunia
Now no one's celebrating- the events of oct 31, 1981
Dom Pérignon, you brought it- griffindore party
No crowd of friends applauded- the prank
Your hometown skeptics called it Champagne problems- sirius family abt him
You had a speech, you're speechless, Love slipped beyond your reaches- jily
And I couldn't give a reason. Champagne problems- peter when hes asked why he betrayed james & lily
Your Midas touch on the Chevy door, November flush and your flannel cure- wolfstar
"This dorm was once a madhouse" I made a joke, "Well, it's made for me"- the marauders
How evergreen, our group of friends Don't think we'll say that word again, And soon they'll have the nerve to deck the halls That we once walked through- the skittles
One for the money, two for the show. I never was ready, so I watch you go- reg about siri
Sometimes you just don't know the answer 'Til someone's on their knees and asks you- reg right before he dies
"She would've made such a lovely bride What a shame she's fucked in the head, " they said- lilys family about pandora
But you'll find the real thing instead, She'll patch up your tapestry that I shred- reg after james breaks ip with him after he gets the dark mark and starts dating lily
And hold your hand while dancing, Never leave you standing, Crestfallen on the landing With champagne problems- remus after he learns sirius was innocent
Your mom's ring in your pocket, Her picture in your wallet, You won't remember all my Champagne problems- sirius watching over remus after he dies
You won't remember all my Champagne problems- the legacy they all left behind

All fic writers writing Sirius and James needing help from Lupin for passing exams and making the charmed mirrors and every other achievement S & J did should just tag their fics as OOC and be done with it.
Sirius and James were incredibly intelligent and accomplished individuals and this shit of wrong tagging and ooc characters is getting really annoying now.

Lily and Petunia have such an interesting and complex relationship and there aren’t enough fics that delve into that.
From what we know from canon, the two were relatively close before Lily’s magic was discovered. We can assume that Petunia’s resentment ramped up when Snape and Lily started to become friends, which was partially because she just didn’t like him and thought he was a weird but if you look at it from a child’s perspective it paints it in a different light, children are easily possessive of things and people, siblings especially, sisters especially.
Her resentment was furthered with their parents treatment of the two. Petunia was the eldest sister, between the two she was the less remarkable, from what we know and can assume from canon, Lily was the golden child, when she received her Hogwarts letter and their parents reacted positively and from what we’re told in the books, ecstatically even, which furthered her resentment even more when she even wrote to Dumbledore asking if she could go to Hogwarts too, but he had told her, though kindly, that because she was a muggle she could not.
Petunia lashed out the only way she knew how to, with resentment and envy, which makes sense really.
If Petunia was already envious of her sister, and their parents put Lily on an even higher pedestal after they found out she was a witch, adding Dumbledore’s words about Petunia not be able to go because she was a “muggle”, then it’d make sense that Petunia would resent Lily, to make her a “freak” in her eyes.
Petunia’s jealousy and resentment came from many things with Lily’s odd abilities, with Lily spending time with Snape, with Lily discovering she was a witch and their parents praising her for that, with Lily’s acceptance into Hogwarts and Petunia’s rejection from it, with pureblood James Potter.
That’s not to say that Lily is at fault or that she didn’t care, we KNOW Lily loved her sister. We can safely assume that she wrote to Petunia throughout Hogwarts, her letters probably getting more scarce as they grew and Petunia had stopped responding, but Lily still sent Petunia a letter when she gave birth to Harry, she still felt that her sister was important enough to her to send a letter announcing Harry’s arrival.
Petunia’s resentment even caused her to marry Vernon because he was everything that Lily was not. He was a boring regular man with a boring regular life. (Which we learn from this part in the books below)
“Mrs Dursley pretended she didn't have a sister, because her sister and her good-for-nothing husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be.”
However, even with all that envy and resentment, Lily was still her sister, we see this when Vernon and Marge are laughing about Lily being a bitch and Petunia isn’t, we see this when Petunia tells Harry that he didn’t just lose a mother that night but she lost a sister(it’s in the movies explicitly so not book canon but it’s still a thing to note)
Petunia treated Harry the way she did because he was attached to the wizarding world and her sister, yeah Harry was a wizard but he was also the spitting image of James, Petunia must have resented him that much more because Harry was the embodiment of the two things that took away her sister, magic and James Potter. More over, Voldemort killed Lily to get to Harry, Lily died for Harry, it’s not an insane thing to think that that added even more to Petunia’s disdain.
Harry was the embodiment of everything that took Lily away from Petunia, magic, James Potter and the very reason her sister was dead. In Petunia’s mind at least.
To add Petunia treated Harry horrifically and no this isn’t an excuse for her inexcusable gross actions, but an unnecessary long look into the reasoning for it.

Barty recognized Luna because he saw Pandora in every step she took, that’s a fact. But what about everyone else?
Do you think he saw Regulus when he looked at Draco? Do you think he hated it so much that his punishments for Draco were really just him punishing Regulus and himself?
Do you think he looked at Harry and saw James and Lily? Do you think he looked at Fred and George and recognized Gideon and Fabian? Do you think he looked at Neville and regretted hurting Alice and Frank?
How many times did Barty have to stop himself from calling out their names when their children wore their smiles?

severus snape who couldve been so much had he not been where he was.
severus snape who couldve doen so much better if he was just a bit stronger.

James Potter who, despite what all may think, is so full of anger that it completely takes over his brain, makes him do the things he does and he doesn't feel an ounce of guilt.
When he torments Severus Snape, he doesn't feel an ounce of guilt, only a flame of rage igniting in his stomach. He doesn't know why he hates the Slytherin boy so much, he never did anything to him, yet he takes pleasure in making a pitiful fool out of the poor boy.
James Potter whose ego is bigger than the sun, not even Apollo in his chariot could move it. He knows he's the best, he doesn't even have to try. Quidditch captain, Head Boy, passing all his classes with O's and E's effortlessly. He knows he's attractive, all the girls that fawn over him say so. His mates as well, Sirius especially with "You've got it all, Prongs." He's a heartbreaker, anyone with the courage to confess gets let down with his brief declines for dates.
He has it all, and yet a part of him is unsatisfied.
Regulus Black is cruel, vindictive, and shallow. Anyone who attempts to approach him is met with an icy glare and harsh words to "Stay the fuck away." Half his house fears him, the other half hates him.
To him, that's okay. He may not have friends, but he has allies. He doesn't need that sort of thing anyway, he's the favorite son of the House of Black, as his parents reminded him.
Regulus loves the Dark Arts, loves the way the existence of them sends shivers down the spines of the Light families. He loves the power that comes from controlling them. To him, wielding that magic makes him feel invincible.
And yet, Regulus is utterly lonely, soft enough to be puppeteered by his family and molded into the perfect obedient son
And perhaps thats why Regulus and James worked so well together. They were both horrible in their own ways. James was well loved, and Regulus was well hated. They could look at the darkest, most vile parts of each other and still find themselves enamored with the other.
They were both hypocrites.
Regulus would admonish James each time he and his gang (that unfortunately consisted of his brother) would torment his fellow Slytherin housemates, no matter if they were pureblood, half-blood, or the rare muggleborn. Regulus constantly had the words "mudblood" and "blood traitor" on his lips, spat like venom casually. Yet, he still adored James Potter as if he and his family weren't the embodiment of everything he hated.
James would scold Regulus for his usage of the slurs he used quite frequently, yet never did much about it in the long run. James claimed himself a muggleborn ally, someone who didn't care about blood status or how rich or poor someone was, yet he kissed the the same lips that would curse out all he said that he believed in.
Perhaps that's why when Regulus took it an honor to join the Dark Lord, James said nothing at first. He still loved Regulus despite it all, because they were both hypocrites. They were different sides of the same coin.
But as time wore on, both of them started to distance themselves. Until they were complete strangers that had a shared past at one point. James moved on, finally getting with Lily and marrying her. Regulus devoted himself to the Dark Lord, later turning against him after his beliefs shifted against the cause he had joined in so naively.
Perhaps if they were different people, they would have worked out in the end. They could have stuck together despite it all. But time moved forwards, and history stayed as history.

Author's Note: So I had this idea about silence being power or rather those that are silent hold the most power and how I could use that for a darker Sirius Black.
Anywho, this was the result.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Sirius Black has never been known as a quiet person. However, he wasn't abnormally loud either.
He was remembered as a boy whose laugh bounced around the room, whose voice carried whenever he spoke, and whose footsteps echoed down the hallway whenever he walked. It was believed he did that on purpose.
He did.
Sirius Black had a sound to him. One that buzzed under his skin and mingled with his magic, creating a sort of…energy around him. One that people were naturally attuned to. He operated on a frequency that made others hyper-aware of him.
So when this boy was quiet, it was a cause for concern because when Sirius Black went silent, the energy disappeared. The silence that permeated wherever he was became oppressive.
In those moments, anyone who was around him was left unnerved by his lack of sound. Not even his magic reacted, choosing at that moment to become eerily calm.
He always spoke in a deceptively soft voice afterward, and unlike any other time, those around had to strain to hear his words.
Everyone had a different reaction to his silence, but only one truly mattered.
Remus hated the silence. He always found an excuse to leave. He never wanted to believe his friend was a monster, but in those moments, rare as they were, he could not see a difference between his wolf on a full moon and a silent Sirius Black. It unnerved his wolf; it made him believe his friend to be a predator. Something to be eliminated.
Peter hated confrontation of any kind and yet reveled in the drama and excitement. He was torn between anticipation and fear. He latched onto Sirius because Peter always seemed to know who was powerful. He smelled it and sought it out like a rat to cheese, and Sirius Black was powerful. He believed that the silence was greater than the sound; he believed he truly understood where Sirius's power was, and he eagerly waited until he could get the tiniest bit of taste.
When Sirius Black's sound returned, a collective sigh of relief was released. However, the moment it did, people felt a tingle on their skin, their hair stood on end, and shivers went down their spines. It felt as if they were in a horror movie, and yet…it was wrong. The danger had passed. The sound was back; their hyperawareness was back, along with that slight buzz in the air. Everything should have been back to normal, and yet…it took days until that sense of normalcy returned.
James, however, knew Sirius like the back of his hand and believed Sirius to be his twin flame. In those moments of utter quiet, he would simply stand behind his friend, an impassive expression plastered on his face. He knew what was to come—the evisceration and annihilation of whoever earned Sirius's silence. Briefly, very, very briefly, he felt a sliver of pity before he squashed it. Whoever caused his friend to revert had it coming.
Because you see, Sirius Black was born silent. When he was still in the womb, he hardly moved or kicked. If not for his heartbeat, everyone would have thought he died in the womb. While other babies screamed and cried the moment they could, Sirius did not. He made a sound when he wanted to be acknowledged, when he was hungry, or when he needed to be changed. He simply saw no reason to make a sound otherwise until he learned how to utilize it.
James Potter, unlike everyone else at Hogwarts, knew the truth.
It was his sound that was dangerous, not the lack of it.
